Christian-Based Education Community embraces Standing Stones academy

N

orth Valley parents seeking a Christian-based day care and preschool for their young children now have a new facility.

Standing Stones Christian Academy opened the doors to its new 16,000-squarefoot preschool in April. The school, located on North Valley Parkway in Phoenix, replaces a previous facility on the grounds of Standing Stones Church in Happy Valley.

Parents are already enamored with the new location, according to school director Sandy Saunders.

“They love the size of the building. They love the security,” she says. “They love the cleanliness.”

Aside from larger classrooms, the new building offers other improvements such as more restrooms, separate playground areas for different age groups and a 2,500-squarefoot multipurpose room which can, among other things, be used as a play area when the weather outside heats up.

In addition to stimulating children with physical and social activities, the academy appeals to parents who want their children’s education to be infused with Christian values from an early age.

Prompted by a neighbor’s recommendation, Malia Wychoff recently enrolled her 18-month old daughter for day care at Standing Stones. She has not been disappointed.

“In my daughter’s class, the teachers are really nice and really seem to care about my daughter.” she says. “I like the idea that it has values for the employees and staff and they’re hopefully passing those values on to my kid.”

Theresa Flood, who has taught at the academy since soon after its former location opened four years ago, believes Standing Stones allows her to impart her personal faith-based values in a way that a public school cannot.

“It’s a place where I can teach the way I want to teach,” she says. “And by that I mean a lot more holistically, incorporating my beliefs into what I teach and weaving

that throughout what I teach.”

Standing Stones’ new facility has the capacity to enroll several hundred students and is expecting about 300 of them for the new school year beginning in the fall. That figure includes preschool and day care. The academy does not distinguish the two from one another because there is a curriculum and instruction in both. In fact, interested parents can enroll their children at Standing Stones anywhere between infancy and the age of 5.

“They (parents) like the academics and the structure,” Saunders says of the day care and preschool offerings. “All of our classrooms are structured with academics throughout the day.”

Beyond the academy’s philosophical approach to teaching, Standing Stones’ new location in and of itself may drive up enrollment numbers.

“It’s in a really great area,” Flood says.

“We are in a burgeoning area with lots of young families in developments popping up around there. We are going to be a wonderful go-to place for all these new families.”

As the school grows, so will the number

of faculty. Just since the relocation, it has grown from 13 to 28. It will increase further, as needed.

If Flood’s experience is typical, then Standing Stones should not have many difficulties finding new instructors.

“It’s a wonderful place to work. It’s a great atmosphere,” she says. “I think that we have a really good reputation in the community…because everybody loves what they do, everybody loves being there, we love the children.”

Saunders believes a positive environment for staff translates into a lack of turnover and, ultimately, a better experience for students.

“We have people that are on their third child and the same teachers are here, and they’re requesting them and they just like that because they just know what to expect,” she says.

One More Light Photographer Jim Louvau honors his late friend, Chester Bennington

J

im Louvau was driving along a Valley freeway when Linkin Park came on the radio. As the song ended, he flipped channels, only to hear the Grammy-winning band once again.

Louvau can’t seem to escape the rock band and that is precisely the problem. He can’t get away from the music or memories of his friend, Chester Bennington, who died by suicide on July 20, 2017.

“It’s terrible every day,” Louvau says with his eyes turned down. “It’s different when you lose a family member, where it affects your immediate circle. You get back to regular life and you can get away from it when you do other things.

“But when your friend happened to be as

successful as he was, his music’s not going anywhere or going away anytime soon.”

A photographer/musician/writer, Louvau is hosting “Celebrating the Life of Chester Bennington” at MonOrchid in Phoenix on Friday, June 21. The exhibit will honor the late Linkin Park singer through a series of photographs they created. Louvau captured Bennington on and off stage and the North Valley resident is bringing the show, which sold out in Burbank, California, to the singer’s home state.

The Burbank show’s success snowballed.

TMZ and other outlets reported about it, much to Louvau’s dismay. Louvau was appalled with TMZ’s intrusive coverage of Bennington’s death and its reporters’ persistence in contacting him.

“I woke up at 8 in the morning and my phone was blowing up,” Louvau recalls about the morning of the show’s second day.

“I was really, really annoyed at the time.

I was getting text messages from my family members, too, because TMZ was calling them to get to me. Th is was all by 8 in the morning and I’d been out all night. Plus, some of the coverage TMZ did when Chester passed was pretty tasteless. I was really skeptical about talking to them. I told them I wasn’t available and to reach out to my publicist.”

Like Burbank, the MonOrchid show will benefit 320 Change Direction, a charity co-founded by Bennington’s wife, Talinda, bringing awareness to mental health. She gave Louvau her blessing to host the show.

out. Fans strolled among the larger-than-life portraits of Bennington.

“The vibe in the room both nights was incredible,” Louvau says. “It was a celebration of a person who impacted a lot of people’s lives.”

The surviving Linkin Park musicians, whom Louvau does not know, did not attend the show. Thanks to the success of Louvau’s Burbank show, he has been asked to bring the event overseas.

“They don’t understand how, logistically, that would work,” he says. “They don’t fit in cars. I had to get a U-Haul to get them home from California.”

A shared love of music Louvau was set to play the Mason Jar with his band, Victims in Ecstacy, in the early 2000s when the manager asked if he would consider switching places with the opening act, Linkin Park.

“He said one of the guys was from Phoenix and his family

couldn’t make it out early,” he says. “He asked if we would mind going on earlier. I said it was fine because it was the middle of the week and I could get out of there sooner.”

That was shortly before the release of Linkin Park’s fi rst record, 2000’s “Hybrid Theory.” At the time, labels put their “baby bands” on the road, with the hopes of landing opening spots for established acts in various markets. There was something special about Louvau and Bennington’s relationship from the beginning.

“We had an issue where we broke the snare drum, so I was on stage trying to entertain people and trying to figure out how we were going to do this,” Louvau recalls.

“Then there’s Chester coming to the rescue, grabbing their snare drum and we finished the show that way.

That was the beginning of our friendship.”

A few months later, Louvau and Bennington ran into each other at a radio show.

“I was backstage, and I get a tap on my shoulder,” Louvau says. “It was Chester and he was telling me how much he loved my band and loved the show.

“When I met him, his band wasn’t massive. We were just two guys in bands.

It was nothing more than two peers. We did the same thing.

He just happened to be really successful with it.”

Louvau took a break from music to be a photographer, which he calls “the second coolest thing in the world that I could think of to capture my favorite artists.” Bennington — who also played with Dead

by Sunrise and Stone Temple Pilots — was willing to work with Louvau to help him hone his craft.

“I have almost a decade’s worth of photos of him — performing on stage with Linkin Park, the Stone Temple Pilots or walking down the hallways of Cardon Children’s Hospital,” Louvau says.

“I watched him talk to sick kids and families. I have all these different characteristics of Chester through photos. I never thought they would mean so much. I was just taking photos of a friend.”

Longtime talent

Louvau attended Glendale’s Ironwood High School. For as long as he can remember, he’s wanted to pursue music or photography.

“I had this idea that if I was going to be a musician, I had to give that 100% and nothing else could fit into my creative spectrum,” he says. “As I got older, I figured out that was ridiculous. I can do both at the same time and be equally as passionate about both.

“I’m lucky I have both because, if I was just doing one all the time, I would lose my mind.

They complement each other and they’ve opened doors for the other as well, which is cool.”

Louvau, who now fronts There is No Us, quit his full-time job four years ago to become a freelance photographer when his mother was diagnosed with brain cancer. He juggled caregiving, photography and writing.

“I had to create opportunities for myself so I could spend as much time with my mom as I could,” Louvau says. “I spent eight months with her and learned the ropes of what it really meant to be a freelancer. It was definitely a gift from her because she was freelancing in her own industry.

“You have to have a lot of guts to not work a regular job and really go for it — especially in this market. I haven’t worked since the day we found out she was ill.”

Louvau says his multifaceted career is his way of channeling energy — nervous, anger, happiness and sadness.

“It could be whatever makes you tick,” he says. “That’s why so many people gravitate toward musicians. They’re saying these things a lot of people feel.”

Bennington is included in that group. The last day the two spent together, Bennington played the “One More Light” record — which was released two months before the singer died — for Louvau as they cruised the California coast.

“I played my new music,” Louvau says.

“It’s really heavy and he’s rocking out as he’s driving. I look over just trying to gauge his reaction.

“He says, ‘Now for something completely different. We just made a pop record.’ I thought it’s probably going to sound a lot like Linkin Park. But yeah, it was a pop record and every time a song or a chorus would change, he looked at me to see my reaction. It was cool because when I was playing my stuff for him, I was nervous. He was equally as nervous playing his stuff.”

“Nervous” wasn’t Louvau’s only feeling. He says the music was blatantly troubling and

that stayed with him.

“After he passed, I said these feelings were with him the whole time,” Louvau says. “It was just being presented in a different way because the music was different. It was from the first single to the last and everything in between.”

Gossip publications and TV shows reported Bennington’s suicide was inspired by Chris Cornell taking his life on May 18, 2017. Louvau says that isn’t so.

“I wouldn’t say Chris Cornell inspired it because there was already a lot of things going on. He shared with me …,” Louvau says quickly redirecting the conversation. “I don’t think the Chris Cornell thing helped. We’re sitting here, right now, on the two-year anniversary of Chris Cornell’s passing.

“Sometimes it feels like it’s been five years. Sometimes it feels like it’s been six months.”

“Celebrating the Life of Chester Bennington” is Louvau’s way of mourning the singer and thanking him.

“I do these exhibits to honor and thank him because he was a really big part of my story in the beginning,” Louvau says. “He’s a really big part of my story again now. He opened doors for me in the beginning and he’s opening doors for me every day still. It’s unfortunate, the circumstances. I look at it like this: I take the gifts my mother and Chester left me and I’m doing my best to make the best of terrible situations.”

Beach volleyball team is dedicated to creating a successful season

S

ports — whether you are playing them or watching them — are a huge part of the high school experience you dream of in middle school. Whether you are a sports fanatic or just a supporter, being involved is what makes all the difference between an amazing experience and a not-so-amazing one.

Beach (or sand) volleyball is one of the lesser-known sports to the public, but to the highly involved student athletes on the team, it takes the gold. With just as much motivation and only two people on one side of the court at a time, the level of dedication has to be much higher

to create a successful team.

Kalyn Boothe, a freshman on Sandra Day O’Connor High School's varsity sand team, has been playing volleyball for six years through various clubs and organizations.

Recently she was voted “rising star” by her teammates and coach. She has big things coming her way in her volleyball career. The biggest difference she has seen between sand volleyball and indoor is the attitude people have toward it.

“Sand volleyball is a lot more laid back than indoor,” Boothe says.

This being said, people have a lot more lenient attitude toward the sport which allows for less stress on and off the court for everyone involved. Less stress makes the experience much more enjoyable, but doesn’t take away from the engaging games that leave you wanting to see more.

With all the volleyball year-round, it can be difficult to keep the passion alive,

but Boothe finds no trouble with it since she has the new experience of playing beach volleyball on a high school level.

“My experience has been so fun! I met a lot of new friends that I’ll have relationships with for a long time,” Boothe says.

These relationships not only allow for a stronger bond on the court, but off the court as well. Having a support system as you go throughout high school is key to staying motivated. Whether it’s through a club, group of friends or, in this case, sports team, most people can agree the people you surround yourself with is what makes or breaks certain aspects of your school life.

As a final piece of advice to any upcoming freshman or anyone seeking to pursue their hobbies on a higher level, Boothe says, “Just keep putting in the hard work and good things will happen!”

Rinaldi’s is back with East Coast Italian fare

O

ne of the great things about Arizona and, especially, Phoenix is the number of people who came here from someplace else. Whether from the South, the California coast, or the Midwest, our large “transplant” population has brought with them some of the coolest things from all four corners of our country.

Case in point: Rinaldi’s Italian Deli, featuring awesome food with East Coast origins. It’s been a local favorite here in North Phoenix for years. In fact, after a long run of serving up deli sandwiches, salads and hot specialty subs, it seemed like nothing could stop the success of Rinaldi’s. Well, almost nothing.

In early spring, Rinaldi’s unexpectedly became a drive-thru restaurant (pun intended).

A car accidentally smashed through the walls, plowed through the dining area, and came out the other side. The good news is that it happened during the lull between busy times, so the dining area

wasn’t crowded. There were no injuries, but the building took a pretty big hit. Two glass walls were shattered, forcing them to close for repairs and reconstruction. Bad news for customers, and bad news for the owners.

Owners John and Bolivia Sayegh are transplanted New Yorkers with decades of restaurant experience and a passion for taking care of their customers. After moving to Arizona from the Big Apple 26 years ago, they started with a Tempe-based deli before moving into their location at the Scottsdale Airpark. Next came their second “airpark” location near Deer Valley Airpark. Rinaldi’s prides itself as being the place “where customers leave happy.”

The lunch/dinner menu at Rinaldi’s features made-to-order deli sandwiches, 11 salads, plus hot Italian specialties like baked ziti, eggplant parmesan, stuffed shells and meatball subs. You could order something different every day for two straight months and not have any repeats.

With this much thought, care and quality put into their menu, the restaurant gods simply would not allow Rinaldi’s to stay closed.

Fast forward six weeks later and the store was fully repaired and back in business. During a recent stop for lunch, it was obvious they were once again on top of their game.

The chicken parm wedge was perfectly prepared and hitting all the right notes. Dining at Rinaldi’s feels like lunchtime in Manhattan (but with better weather). Close your eyes between bites and you’ll swear you’re relaxing on a bench in Central Park.

Rinaldi’s also knocks it out of the park when it comes to catering. The options are virtually limitless and include breakfast platters, cold cut trays, boxed lunches, party subs and hot entrees served in chafi ng dishes. Everyone goes home happy. No one goes home hungry. But a word of caution for party planners: Once you’ve experienced Rinaldi’s catering, you’ll have a tough time ordering from anywhere else.

No one wants to see a business go through an extended closure, and it’s especially tough when it’s a small, family-owned business. Distracted Driving

Arizona’s new law profits phone use while driving

T

he Arizona Legislature passed, and our governor recently signed, House Bill 2318. The new law, which will become A.R.S. § 28-914, prohibits texting while driving. But the statute is more complicated than that.

The new law prohibits three main things: (1) Holding or supporting a wireless communication device while driving; (2) Writing, sending or reading a text-based communication while driving, and (3) Watching, recording, or broadcasting a video while driving.

There are three main exceptions. The new law does not apply to: (1) The use of a hands-free or a voice-to-text device; (2) If the driver is stopped at a traffic light; (3) If the driver is reporting an emergency. The prohibition on reading a text-based communication while driving also does not apply to a hands-free GPS or navigation system.

The legislation passed with an emergency clause, so the law is in effect now. However, law enforcement officers will only issue warnings until January 1, 2021. But this warning grace period only applies to the state law.

Many cities have enacted local ordinances and it is certainly possible to be ordered to report to a municipal court in the interim.

Similar legislation had been introduced before; but had failed each time. The policy-

makers perhaps changed their minds due to the death of a Salt River Police Department officer who, while speaking to a motorist, was hit and killed by a texting driver.

But wasn’t this already illegal? In Arizona, not really. In some cases, it could be possible to charge texting while driving as reckless driving, but that is a criminal charge. Under that standard, drivers who operate their “vehicle in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property” can be found guilty of reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor.

Making something illegal does not stop that type of misconduct from occurring, but it can help. It is also possible to go too far. One commentator suggested state legislators should pass laws requiring people convicted of texting while driving to install devices in their vehicles that disable cellphones from sending or receiving texts while the vehicle is in motion.

The bottom line is people need to put their phones down while they are driving. If your call or text is so important it cannot wait, then pull into a parking lot. Don’t endanger your life or the lives of others.

Is cellphone use in cars really a problem?

Using a cellphone while driving creates a hazard. It is not a new problem. Research published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1997 found a four-times greater risk of an accident when the driver was using a cellphone. A 2003 study by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis attributed 2,600 deaths and more than 330,000 other injuries per year to cellphone use while driving. Those numbers have risen dramatically as cellphones have become more common and more complex.

By 2005, the California Highway Patrol logged data showing cellphones were the top distraction leading to traffic accidents. Based on an analysis of traffic fatality data and texting records, researchers at the University of North Texas recently concluded texting while driving was responsible for more than 16,000 deaths between 2001 and 2007. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, distracted driving took the lives of 3,166 people in 2017 alone.

The connection between cellphone use and traffic accidents is not surprising. Researchers have found talking on a cellphone creates a “cognitive tunnel vision” in which drivers fail to recognize what is happening around them.

A 2001 study of simulated driving found that college students who were deeply involved in cellphone conversations missed traffic signals at twice the rate of those not using phones.

If while driving, it takes you 5 seconds to send or to read a text, and if you are driving at 55 m.p.h. (80.7 feet per second), then you would travel 403 feet during that period of time. It is similar to driving the length of a football field while blindfolded. Don’t do it.

Arizona State Historic Preservation Office creates new award Arizona State Historic Preservation Office created a new award honoring individuals whose commercial, political, philanthropic, artistic, planning or advocacy efforts have contributed to their communities’ quality of life, sense of place and heritage appreciation.

The award is named the Elisabeth F. Ruffner Keystone Award for Community Leadership in honor of the late Ruffner, whose decades of advocacy on behalf of Prescott are of permanent inspiration to Arizona’s preservation community. The award reflects the crucial role strong community leadership plays in stabilizing and strengthening historic preservation efforts.

The award will be presented at the 2019 Arizona State Historic Preservation Conference at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in Prescott. The awards ceremony begins at the Elks Lodge following the conference welcome reception at the Hassayampa Inn across the street. The 2019 ceremony will honor Ruffner’s memory and formally dedicate the award in her honor. The award will continue to be bestowed annually from the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, with candidates from the host community or regional communities, eligible for consideration. The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office is based in 85085.

As scientists are getting closer to a cure for valley fever (soon a vaccination for our pets), I look forward to seeing how the critical resources provided in this legislation will positively impact the southwest. We are extremely hopeful that a cure is in our near future.”

Blue beagle Reggie has a special relationship with his family and Superman

T

he Shine family of Phoenix felt they were rescuing their blue tick beagle Reggie when they acquired him five years ago. But, Joanna Shine says, Reggie saved them.

As she was being treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Reggie didn’t leave her side. The horses at their ranch JKW Stables, went from edgy to calm.

“He was really good. He would be with me everywhere I went,” she says about Reggie.

Reggie is 85085 Magazine’s winner of the Cutest Pet Contest. The pup rules the roost among his siblings — Spike, a Staffordshire terrier, chow, boxer mix; Daisy, an Airedale, Scottish deerhound, Staffordshire terrier mix; and Chumlee, a white lab, as well as a cat named Cletus.

“He’s good with cats and good with other dogs,” she says. “He’s perfect. He’s my little

shadow. My daughter has down syndrome and he’s really good with her. She adores him.”

Shine — whose children are 15-year-old Presley and 18-year-old Tryston — received Reggie as a gift from her husband, Kevin, five years ago, after she eyed him in a store.

“We went in and he kept staring at me,” says Shine about Reggie. “I was really struck.

Then they asked if we wanted to hold him and then I was done.

“I saw him and had to have him. Kevin went back alone, looked at him and agreed. We were in love.”

Shine, who studied to be a dental hygienist at NAU, is a horse trainer, a position she was born into. Her parents’ JKW Stables specializes in showing American Saddlebred horses, saddle seat and western riding.

Kevin is just as enamored with Reggie as he

is with his wife. He revealed one of Reggie’s secret talents when she stepped outside: Reggie comes running when he hears the Superman theme song.

“I whistle it and he comes,” he says with a laugh. “We didn’t train him to do it.”

Describing Reggie as a blue tick beagle, Kevin says he didn’t know there were so many types of beagles. Blue tick beagles are known to be intelligent dogs who need to be kept active and love to play games. They’re also curious and alert, gentle and friendly, and sociable. The dog is reportedly good with adults and other pups, and their gentle and patient nature makes them ideal pets for children.

“In the sun, you can see the blue in his nose,” he explains. “That’s why, too, his body is that sort of gray. He changes colors. He’s a big part of our family.”

Building leaders, one Sabercat at a time

hile some parents struggle to keep their kids active and away from video games and YouTube, many Anthem parents are finding the solution in the Sabercats club football organization.

Coach Christian Luckock, who has been a part of the Sabercats since 2013, attributes sports as a valuable and vital answer for kids to get regular exercise and social interaction.

“We’re helping young boys become men,” Luckock says. “They’re learning to overcome fear, adversity, negativity, how to push past their limits and how to rely on their team.”

Of course, teamwork comes with drive and responsibility. Practicing two and a half hours three days a week, plus games on Saturdays, is helping the young men develop proper time management and focus. Children from kindergarten through eighth grade are developing important life skills that they will use on and off the field, in all aspects of life.

The Sabercats are a not-for-profit group that relies on the support of its families, community and local businesses for sponsorships and donations. Practice begins again in July and registration is open.

The Sabercats are charter members of Alliance Youth Sports, which hosts 15 to 20 teams each season. It is a grade-based, weight unrestricted club football program designed to prepare young athletes for junior high and high school football. The Sabercats take it a step further by being a “feeder” program for Boulder Creek High School. Th is alliance benefits the players by allowing them

to practice on Boulder Creek’s field, having high school coaches interact with them and allowing them to see a path that is attainable with hard work and dedication. At the same time, it allows the high school coaches to observe the players who are about to make that transition from club ball to high school.

“It’s not all about winning,” Luckock asserts. “It’s not just about one kid. The parents are as important as the team.”

Rightfully so, as Luckock points out that the Christian faith-based program has built a winning tradition grounded on faith, family and friendship. Families are strongly encouraged to be active with the team and get involved with the community and charitable activities like feeding homeless veterans as a team.

The Sabercats have built a culture of not only hard work, drive, determination and focus, but also one of belonging and acceptance. Luckock recalled a time when a player who was new to the area joined the team and hadn’t found his place in the community. He was a victim of teasing and shaming. A few weeks into the season, the young man’s father gratefully reached out to Luckock because his son found a sense of purpose and belonging, all through the comradery and support of the team.

When asked what he expected from the players on and off the field, Luckock says, “To represent the club and community in an appropriate way.” Respect and positive community involvement were keys to the Sabercats’ success.

Ike Clanton finally meets his Waterloo

I

t was 1887 and Ike and Fin Clanton, a couple of cow thieves who survived the Cochise County War against Wyatt Earp and his brothers five years earlier, moved their operations to the Springerville area. Their ranch, the Cienega Amarilla, was located east of Springerville, near Escudilla Mountain.

The Clantons and their friends were accused of terrorizing local citizens, cattle rustling, train robbery and holding up the Apache County treasurer.

A few years earlier, under the leadership of family patriarch, Newman Haynes “Old Man” Clanton, they created a successful business in Cochise County during the late 1870s and early 1880s brokering stolen livestock from Mexico. The old man was killed in an ambush at Guadalupe Canyon in the summer of 1881, and the youngest, Billy, died a few weeks later in the so-called “Gunfight at OK Corral.”

A story was told around Tombstone that the Clantons often boasted the reason their cattle business was so profitable was that they didn’t have to buy their cows.

Ike was a fairly likeable figure around Tombstone. He had plenty of money to spend around town, and this made him popular among locals. He was also a loudmouthed braggart and, more than anyone else, instigated the fateful showdown with the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday in Tombstone on October 26, 1881.

When the shooting started, Ike skedaddled, leaving his younger brother Billy to die.

Interestingly, the Earps and Doc Holliday might have been charged with murder had Ike not testified for the prosecution. He got on the stand and, with his outlandish tall tales, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory for the prosecution. But that’s a story for another time.

No doubt, despite his popularity, Ike had many character flaws. Noted Tombstone historian Ben Traywick described him as “a born loser.”

There was so much litigation over rustling

in Apache County that Ike Clanton was probably not a high priority. As he did in Tombstone, Ike passed himself off as a successful businessman. He spent a lot of money and that was good for business.

Other members of the gang included Lee Renfro, G.W. “Kid” Swingle, Longhair Sprague, Billy Evans (who called himself “Ace of Diamonds”) and the Clanton’s brother-in-law, Ebin Stanley.

On Christmas Day 1886 in Springerville, Evans, wanting to see “if a bullet would go through a Mormon,” shot and killed Jim Hale in cold blood. Apparently, Hale incurred the wrath of the outlaws earlier after he helped identify some livestock they’d stolen.

Five days later, the St. Johns Herald wrote of the killing, “During a holiday jollification in Springerville on Christmas Day, the ordinary amusement of pistol shooting was indiscriminately indulged in, and the town ventilated with bullets. Mr. Hale, who was said to have been among the celebrates was shot through the body, from which death ensued.”

The Clantons downfall in Apache County began a few weeks earlier on November 6 with the shooting of a local rancher named Isaac Ellinger at the Clanton ranch. Ellinger and a friend, Pratt Plummer, rode to the ranch and had dinner with the Clanton brothers and Lee Renfro. Afterward, Ellinger, Ike and Renfro went into another cabin and were having a conversation when Renfro suddenly pulled his pistol and shot the rancher.

After the shooting, Ike and Fin assured Renfro they were his friends and there was no need to make a hasty exit.

However, when Plummer jumped on his horse and rode for Springerville, Renfro mounted his horse and fled the scene.

As he lay dying, Ellinger called the shooting “coldblooded murder,” saying he had no idea Renfro was going to shoot him. He died four days later.

William Ellinger, Isaac’s brother, was one of the biggest cattlemen in the West, owning ranches in several states and territories. He was a member of the Apache County Stock Association and had a lot of political clout in the area.

Isaac managed his older brother’s ranch and was also a member of the association. His murder would set in motion a strong effort on the part of the association to eliminate the Clanton gang.

In April 1887, the Apache County Stock Association convened in St. Johns and hired a Pinkerton detective to keep an eye on Andy Cooper’s gang. At the same time, Sheriff Owens dispatched Apache County deputies Albert Miller and Rawhide Jake Brighton to go after the Clantons. Brighton, along with being constable at Springerville, was a range detective enforcing the law with a mail-order detective’s badge.

Originally, on the recommendation of Undersheriff Joe McKinney, Owens had hired the famous ex-Texas lawman Jeff Milton to go after the Clantons, but at the last minute, he accepted a job as customs officer in southern

Arizona.

In May and June 1887, several grand jury indictments were brought against the Clantons and their friends. Most of them involved the murder of Isaac Ellinger. One of the warrants charged Lee Renfro with the murder of Ellinger.

Six-gun justice was closing in on the outlaws. The July 9 edition of the Albuquerque Morning Democrat wrote a detailed description of the gunfight at Eagle Creek, stating that Billy Evans, a.k.a. Ace of Diamonds, and Longhair Sprague were believed to have met their deaths at a ranch owned by Charlie Thomas in the Blue River country of eastern Arizona. The two, along with either Lee Renfro or Kid Swingle, rode into the ranch and, after enjoying the rancher’s hospitality, left the following morning, taking with them some of their host’s horses.

Thomas and two friends picked up their trail and caught up with the rustlers at the mouth of Eagle Creek. Evans and Sprague pulled their guns and opened fi re on the ranchers, who returned fi re, killing both rustlers. The third rustler, probably Renfro, escaped.

The St. Johns Herald had a different take, claiming the story was a hoax conjured up by friends of the outlaws to give them time to escape. Still another twist of the tale claimed the story was made up to protect the posse as to the identity of who was actually gunning down the rustlers.

Soon after the gunfight at Eagle Creek, the law finally caught up with Lee Renfro along the border of Graham and Apache counties.

A “secret service” officer, in the employment of a cattlemen’s association, recognized him and attempted to make an arrest. Renfro went for his gun, and the officer shot him down.

“Did you shoot me for money?” the dying outlaw asked.

“No, I shot you because you resisted arrest,” he replied. The mysterious “secret officer” was the ubiquitous Rawhide Jake Brighton.

About that same time, it was reported that the infamous horse thief Kid Swingle was found hanging from the limb of a tree.

According to reports, Brighton and Albert Miller rode south of Springerville into the Blue River country near the Arizona–New Mexico border looking for Ike and his friends.

After three days of hard riding, they stopped to rest at the ranch of James “Peg Leg” Wilson on Eagle Creek. They spent the night there, and the next morning while they were having breakfast, Ike Clanton rode in. Brighton recognized him and went to the door.

Suddenly Ike wheeled his horse around and bolted toward a thick stand of trees nearby. At the same time, he jerked his Winchester from its scabbard and threw it across his left arm.

Brighton fired, hitting Ike under his left arm, passing through his body and exiting on the right side. Brighton jacked another cartridge into his rifle and fired again, hitting the cantle of Ike’s saddle, grazing his leg. He fell from the saddle and was dead by the time the officers reached him.

Afterward, Wilson rode to the nearby Double Circle Ranch where he found four of Ike’s friends, who returned with him to identify the body.

Ike’s body, along with his spurs and pistol, was wrapped in a piece of canvas and buried at the Wilson ranch.

Earlier that year, in April, Fin Clanton were arrested for rustling and jailed in St. Johns and was still behind bars when Ike was run to the ground. Otherwise, he might have met the same fate as his brother. Fin was convicted in September and sentenced to 10 years at the territorial prison at Yuma but was released after serving only two years.

Ike and Fin’s brother-in-law, Ebin Stanley, was given 60 days to get out of Arizona.

He and his wife packed their belongings and moved to New Mexico.

Whether or not Ike was “resisting arrest” when he was killed is still debated by historians. Despite the official report, there are some today who insist that Brighton was a hired assassin who shot Ike in the back as he was running away. The assassination of known rustlers wasn’t all that uncommon in the Old West, where justice was sometime hard to come by. Ike cleverly managed to elude the law for several years before he was fi nally driven out of Cochise County.

Shot while resisting arrest was a term often used to justify exterminating an evasive outlaw who’d managed to escape prosecution by legal means. Towns and cities in the West frequently resorted to vigilante justice when they felt the law was unable or unwilling to protect them. Big ranchers and cattlemen’s associations across the West oftentimes hired gunmen to rid their ranges of livestock thieves. The Johnson County War in Wyoming and story of Tom Horn are classic examples. The legendary Cochise County Sheriff John Slaughter acted as judge, jury and executioner more than once.

Author Steve Gatto wrote, “The last man standing gets to tell the tale.” And so it is.

racy van Ravensway was looking to make a change. In the real estate business for 18 years and practicing as a designated broker, she thought it was about time to start her own brokerage.

Van Ravensway reached out to her title company representative and friend, Candis Creel, for advice. She suggested meeting her husband, Michael Creel, who had been working on the concept for more than a year. After 15 minutes, van Ravensway knew it was a match made in heaven.

One month later, Collective Concepts was officially a real estate brokerage. It has been a Greater Anthem Chamber of Commerce member since 2017.

What year did you open?

Why did you decide to open your business in the North Valley?

Collective Concepts opened its doors in October 2017 with an office in Anthem, located within the Anthem Chamber of Commerce. Why Anthem? Tracy has resided in Anthem since 2004 and it is where most of her business is conducted. They now have several agents within the brokerage who also live nearby. Finding an office in the chamber was just a bonus. In 2018, the Scottsdale branch office of Collective Concepts was opened. It was a “build it and they will come” idea, which has deemed successful.

What differentiates your business from your competitors?

Collective Concepts is different than any other brokerage in the Phoenix area. The agents operate as a support for each other, instead of competitors. Collective Concepts is looking forward to slow growth. Adding experienced and ethical agents to the team will be an ongoing process. “We look for agents who put their clients first,” van Ravensway says.

Sharing His Talents Journalist Micah Johnson joins Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

M

icah Johnson of MediaStars is deeply rooted in journalism as a cause, passion and purpose. It’s not just a vocation.

The North Valley resident and seasoned broadcaster is sharing his knowledge as a member of the board of governors for the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

“I’m thrilled to return to the board and use my journalism experience to help maintain a high standard for television journalism,” Johnson says.

As a previous member of the Rocky Mountain chapter’s board of governors, Johnson brings years spent on both sides of the anchor desk.

His career started in his hometown of St. Marys in rural north central Pennsylvania.

From his small town, he went to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study communications media. After college, Johnson worked in Erie, Pennsylvania, before moving to a small

market in West Virginia.

In 1986, after responding to a help wanted ad in Broadcasting & Cable magazine, Johnson moved to Atlanta to work for CNN. He would become Headline News’ youngest male anchor.

“That was the real CNN, back when Ted Turner owned it,” Johnson recalls. “I’m proud to have worked there during such a great time in journalism.”

You may recognize the voice, if not the face. Johnson also starred as “the voice” for much of the network, including “Larry King Live.” Today he still finds time to work as voiceover talent for national and local clients, like NASA, from his North Phoenix office.

Johnson recently won an Emmy for his work with the space agency.

From Atlanta, Johnson moved to Washington, D.C., where he anchored for NBC, winning a gold medal at the Radio/TV Festival of New York for his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Johnson then took his reporting and anchoring experience to Pennsylvania Avenue, where he spent a few years as a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association during President George H.W. Bush’s terms.

“At the end of my life, I never want to ask, ‘What if?’” Johnson says. “Working with the network at NBC allowed me to make contacts I never would have met otherwise. To get to the White House, I took a chance; knowing sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. Luckily, for me it did.”

Johnson’s established career also includes stints as news director in several markets and vice president of news for a major broadcasting group. In addition, his experience brought him the opportunity to work with the late Robin Leach producing red carpet specials at the Billboard Music Awards, Country Music Awards and several TV pilots.

Today, he successfully blends this oncamera foundation with management and leadership skills to support a select group of reporters, anchors and producers. Through MediaStars agency, Johnson now shepherds “talent” with contract negotiations, professional — and sometimes personal — membership and guidance.

“The talent is the icing on the cake — the real reason people tune in,” Johnson states.

“Coming from a background as talent, I felt I could share my knowledge and pass it on to the household faces of today.”

Now, as a NATAS board member, this busy father of three is sharing his vast industry knowledge with the Rocky Mountain region.

One of his first orders of duty is helping with the Rocky Mountain Emmys on September 14 when the board will recognize excellence in television and allied media in the chapter’s designated award region of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and El Centro, California.

Earning an Emmy award from the Rocky Mountain region is a high honor; the peer review awards are meant to encourage the continued pursuit of excellence in the television and media industry and help focus public attention on outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news, informational programming and craft achievements in television and online.

“I love what NATAS stands for: I’m also a member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences,” Johnson says. “This industry needs to be righted; especially from the standpoint of credible content. I’m eager to be a part of that by helping keep quality and credibility in the product.”

Soldier On An early Father’s Day look at men’s personalities

A

s our calendar turns into June, many will have the third Sunday in June circled. It is the day we call Father’s Day. Moms were doted on last month. Typically, on Mother’s Day, moms like to have the family go to church together and then go out for a nice lunch. Dads like to go fishing or camping or to get 18 holes in before firing up the grill and enjoying a barbecue.

Recently I had a man admit to me that he “was never taught to be a man.” The statement somewhat startled me, because most men would never admit to a truth like that.

In a general sense, men are typically poor communicators. Why is this? Research explains in adolescence, developing communication skills was never a high priority for most boys. Research has shown that from a young age, girls tend to verbally use words, whereas boys make sounds. They vroom like a race car, they scream like a siren, they holler like an airplane. Girls tend to develop friendships and relationships and boys play and become competitors.

When boys grow up and have the privilege and joy of becoming a husband and a father, the role requires them to verbalize their emotions, thoughts and needs. When, as a dad, they need to focus on building and sustaining relationships, too often men realize these were skills that weren’t naturally developed as boys and young men.

This is when a man needs to step up. Using the soldier as a metaphor, men need to soldier on. A soldier by definition is one who “faithfully serves; one who is a skilled warrior.” Our world needs more dads to be skilled warriors, to step up, to soldier on, to develop the skills they already possess and to break through those emotional brick walls.

Again, research is showing many men today, at least in the last two generations, were raised by fathers who didn’t step up.

The fruit of this is a generation of men who

feel inadequate, but can’t or won’t acknowledge their lack of confidence and preparation. Sadly, statistics support how families have been affected by this phenomenon.

The high divorce rates and the increasing number of children in the United States who live in a single-parent household — most missing the influence and model of a father — has more than doubled since 1980. The Institute for American Values has pronounced the fatherless family as “a radical departure from virtually all of human history and experience.”

One of the greatest challenges for boys is trying to become a man without a father to

show him how. How can a boy know what it looks like to be a man in the battle? Like soldiers, we are called to do our duty even when the storms of life tempt us to abandon our posts. A man protects his family.

A man serves and leads his family. A man teaches the next generation how to be the husbands and fathers God has allowed us to be.

“No one ever taught me how to be a man.” The statement can be exciting because it opens the door for fathers to step up and to soldier on and begin being the model and inspiration they have the privilege of being. Happy Father’s Day!

Try these crafty projects in honor of dad

ather’s Day is a great reason to make crafts to say I love you. We have created cute and easy ways to create gifts for those you love.

I love you to the moon and back is a sweet saying you can give dad. Start with a painted paper or blue construction paper. We used craft sticks to make a ladder and glued them down. You could also paint it on. We used paper to make a moon. We took a photo climbing and then printed and cut it out. We glued to the ladder to make it look like they are touching the moon. You can write “I love you to the moon and back” on your art for dad. You can add stars and anything else you want to make your design unique.

Another craft to show your love is blowing dad hearts. We took the photo of the pretend blowing first. You can add hearts in a program like Photoshop like we did or print the photo and use marker or paint to add them.

You could also cut little hearts out and glue them on the photo. Add a message of love and you have an easy card for dad.

Another craft to keep dad laughing is a jar of dad jokes. You can find ideas online if you cannot think of any. We typed some out and

glued them to craft sticks to put in a jar. You can decorate the jar or cut out a cute tie to write on. If you don’t have a jar, you can put them in an envelope or other container to package them up for dad.

The Jennings family brings affordable coffee to Phoenix

fter decades of restaurant and food service work, Connor and Heather Jennings fulfi lled their dream of owning their own business.

The couple is celebrating its third anniversary of owning Krazy4Koffee, a local coffee shop and deli located at 711 E. Carefree Highway, Phoenix. It purchased coffee locally, and also specializes in madeto-order sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, pastries and coffee using local ingredients.

“We always liked coffee, and this place seemed to fit with what we needed,” Connor Jennings says.

To elaborate on the menu, the store of-

fers affordable coffee (a regular cup starts at just $1.87) with options for different flavors, such as French press or cappuccino.

Blended favorites ($4.45 to $6.99) include the Al Pacino (chocolate, white chocolate or caramel) and The Elvis (white chocolate/ peanut butter/banana/espresso).

Smoothies are $4.70 and come in peach, “strawnana,” “superberry” or tropical. For the health-conscious customer, there is The Hulk (almond milk, spinach and banana), and the Tropical Hulk, both of them are $6.75. The frozen lemonade (plain, strawberry or tropical) is ideal for summer at $4.70.

Krazy4Koffee also offers food, such as the made-to-order breakfast sandwich ($4.70) and deli sandwiches ($6.25 to $7.25) like turkey club, Southwestern, chicken Caesar, Buffalo chicken, Italian hero, Italian outlaw, club, ham and swiss as well as chicken or tuna salad. Many of the items are available for catering local events.

The Jennings family is the third owner of Krazy4Koffee since it was established in 2011. So, when they purchased the shop, it came with a base of regulars.

“Really, we renamed a couple drinks, added a few things here or there, or took a couple things out that weren’t going to be as popular,” Jennings says. “We wanted to try to put our own spin on it but keep the same energy of the place.”

Krazy4Koffee is the definition of a family-owned business. The store has hired one or two outside employees, and Jennings will likely look for some help as Heather is set to give birth soon. However, the majority of the staff are relatives or close friends.

While Anthem and the North Valley are growing, local businesses could be at a premium. The true local flavor of a couple who loves the area is a real selling point.

The process has not always been easy, though. Previous owners had promised a week of training to the new crew, but “bailed” after about two days. Years of making and serving drinks and food, along with an innate ability for customer service, have made for a

smooth transition.

“We basically got thrown into the fi re,” he says. “We learned as we went, and then the repetition when we were new to it made a big difference. Now everything feels really comfortable.”

While the Krazy4Koffee owners are still trying to have their presence known to more Anthem and North Phoenix residents, the reactions from the public have been comforting. The shop and its staff often receive compliments on both their products and highlevel service.

Once a customer shows up once, Jennings knows he can keep them coming back for years to come.

Kettle Chip Beef Tenderloin with Mango Avocado Salsa

Kettle Chip Beef Tenderloin with Mango Avocado Salsa (Serves 4)

Ingredients: - 1 (3 pounds) beef tenderloin - 1/4 cup spice blend for rub (See directions below for recommendations) - 1 cup (crushed) Kettle Brand Salt and Fresh Ground Pepper Potato Chips - 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened - 1/2 cup Dijon mustard

It’s a special occasion dinner, a fabulous Sunday supper, a Father’s Day feast or just a delicious weeknight meal. Beef tenderloin is always a favorite, and I often get requests for different ways to prepare it.

Cooked correctly, this cut of beef can be so tender it will melt in your mouth. In fact, beef tenderloin is widely regarded as the tenderest of all cuts. (After all, you’re getting a fi let as a bonus!)

I’m sharing a recipe that requires only a few ingredients including a Dijon mustard and butter slather that keeps the tenderloin sealed for a succulent outcome. The spices are blended with delicious savory crushed potato chips, and the combination is all you need to bring out the best in this tenderloin!

A refreshing, bright mango avocado salsa is the perfect side for this meal.

Kettle Chip Beef Tenderloin

Directions: Heat oven to 400 degrees. Crush potato chips with mini food prep or place chips in a zippered plastic bag and crush with rolling pin. In a bowl, combine spice blend with crushed potato chips, mixing well. (For the spice blend, I recommend: 1 tablespoon of McCormick Grill Mates, 1 tablespoon McCormick roasted garlic powder, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon pepper and 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend. Or, you can use any of your favorite beef barbecue or rub spices.)

In another bowl, combine softened butter and Dijon mustard, whisking until smooth.

Place beef tenderloin on a baking sheet. With a pastry brush, completely coat the top and sides of the tenderloin.

Sprinkle the crushed potato chip and beef spice combination over entire beef tenderloin, patting gently to

adhere to mustard. Place in 400-degree oven for about 45 minutes or internal temperature is 130 degrees for rare, 140 degrees for medium rare, and 155 degrees for well done. (Jan’s Note: I cooked the tenderloin to 140 degrees.)

Meanwhile, make mango avocado salsa and when done, refrigerate until ready to serve.

When beef tenderloin is done, remove from oven and let rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing. When ready to serve, slice tenderloin in thin slices and plate with spoonfuls of mango avocado salsa.

Mango Avocado Salsa

Ingredients: - 1 large ripe avocado, diced - 1 large ripe Mango, diced - 1 Serrano chili pepper, minced - 1 medium large tomato, diced - 2 tablespoons red onion, minced - 1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped fine - 1 large lime, juiced - Pinch of salt Directions: In a medium bowl, combine diced avocado, diced mango, Serrano pepper, tomato, red onion, cilantro and the juice of one large lime. Gently stir to combine. Add a pinch of salt if needed.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Vaping has become more and more popular with the rise of e-cigarettes. Ecigarettes were introduced to the market in the United States in 2007 and were initially intended for a good purpose: to help

The e-liquid that is used in these devices usually contains three ingredients: propylene glycol and/or glycerin, chemicals for flavoring and nicotine. The e-liquid can also contain THC, the chemical found in marijuana, which can make the user feel “high.”

Is nicotine harmful to your health?

E-cigarette use poses a significant, yet avoidable, threat to the health of kids, teens and young adults. When the nicotine from the e-liquid is inhaled, it enters the lungs and is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Once in the bloodstream nicotine stimulates the body to release a hormone called epinephrine, or adrenaline. This hormone stimulates the central nervous system to raise blood pressure, breathing rate and heart rate. Additionally, nicotine also activates the brain’s reward center by causing a build-up of a chemical called dopamine.

Dopamine causes the user to experience pleasure and motivates them to continue using more and more nicotine, eventually leading to an addiction.

Why is nicotine (and vaping) specifically unsafe for kids, teens and young adults?

Until about the age of 25, the brain is

An adolescent brain tends to build synapses faster than the adult brain, allowing them to absorb information and learn quicker.

Using nicotine in adolescence can damage the part of the brain that is responsible for learning, decision-making, impulse control and mood control. Because addiction is a form of learning, younger users can develop an addiction much quicker than adults, which can arguably lead to other illicit drug use.

Are there any regulations on the safety of e-cigarette products?

In May 2016, the Food and Drug Administration announced the agency’s authority to regulate the manufacturing, importing, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale and distribution of e-cigarettes under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Now, before a manufacturer can market their product claiming there are lower risks of exposure to toxins or adverse health effects, it must first receive approval by the FDA to make such claims.

To date, no manufacturer of e-cigarettes has received FDA approval for claims of lower health risks.

Lexus GS-F sedan has an impressive list of goodies

L

exus has a reputation for building excellent luxury cars. Every now and then the factory slips in a performance package to compete with the potent high-horsepower European vehicles. This is the case with this GS-F four-door sedan. On the outside, it looks similar to the common Lexus sedans.

But look closely, and you’ll see the quad exhaust pipes sticking out, suggesting there are more items of interest — and there are.

The GS-F has an impressive list of goodies, starting with a powerful 487 horsepower v8, hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The paddle shifters on the steering wheel allow manual gear selection, if desired. This is all hooked to a torque vectoring differential.

For cornering ability, there are large lightweight alloy wheels with performance tires — 255/35R19 in front, and 275/35R19 in rear. A powerful car like this needs to have

stopping ability, so Brembo ventilated brake rotors with six-piston calipers in front, and four-pistons in the rear provide this service.

A control knob allows Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport+ or Custom mode, which adjusts suspension and gearbox performance.

There are plenty of luxury items standard, too. The issued items are navigation, radar cruise, voice command, satellite radio, leather trim, moon roof and power everything for a start. This explains the starting price of $84,350. With options like a heads up display, trunk mat and a Mark Levinson 835 watt stereo with 17 speakers, the tab reached $87,985.

For this fee, we get a car that’s a blast to drive. The 0 to 60 mph time is reached in the claimed 4.4 seconds, and handling ability on tightly curved mountain roads is excellent. The noise from that quad exhaust lets everyone know you are coming, includ-

ing the traffic cops, so pay attention in this powerful machine. For long highway trips, just put the computer control in the Normal mode, and enjoy a comfortable ride. In the 500 miles we put on the clock, the only gripe is fuel economy. It is claimed to be 16/24 mpg, which I found to be accurate. But with an engine cranking this much power, and the temptation to use it (we did), it is not realistic to expect better consumption, not on this two-ton machine.

Overall, this car is an excellent choice for a buyer who wants performance with their luxury. The Lexus reliability is an extra bonus.
