Dick Metz is dedicated to helping veterans. An Air Force retiree, Metz was elected to helm North Glendale’s new American Legion Post 115. The city’s second Legion Post was established to serve the West and Northwest valleys, including ZIP codes 85304, 85306, 85308, 85310 and 85053. It meets at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. The June meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday, June 17, in person and via Zoom starting
at 6:45 p.m. Attendance and reservations are not mandatory. District Cmdr. Bobbie Kimelton will install recently elected and appointed officers. Prospective members are not required to live in Glendale. Members hail from Litchfield Park, Tempe, Surprise and Peoria, among other areas. Previously, Post 115 was in Scottsdale, but Metz said, it “fell by the wayside for lack of participation.” Metz was a member of Post 143, which was in Litchfield Park and then Goodyear. “They wanted to reactivate 115 and
move it to North Glendale,” said Metz, who lives in an unincorporated area near Litchfield Park and Luke Air Force Base. “The post that was in North Glendale had a lot of problems and moved out. In January, I was called and asked if I would be willing to transfer to 115 and take over as commander.” Post 115 meets in a real estate office near 59th Avenue and the Loop 101. Annual dues are $45. “Our primary function is to provide services to the veterans in the area,” Metz SEE LEGION PAGE 8
Crystal Lagoons is the ‘next wave’ of entertainment BY ALEX GALLAGHER Glendale Star Staff Writer
Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said the much-hyped Crystal Lagoons Island Resort is much more than a water park. It’s a world-class destination. “This is not a water park, this is Crystal Lagoons,” he said at the groundbreaking. “This is going to be second to none in the state. Don’t let anyone tell you this is just a water park.” Weiers was among the dignitaries present for the June 10 event. The resort, which will be set on just over 48 acres of land at 95th Avenue and Cardinals Way, will feature an 11-acre lagoon 8- to 10-feet deep along; a hotel with more than 600 rooms; restaurants and bars; experiential retail stores; a 4-D theater and the first Mattel-themed adventure park.
Although Crystal Lagoons Island Resort is perfect for out-of-town visitors, Weiers said it’s great for locals’ staycations. “There’s going to be a lot of people who won’t be going out of state because they won’t have to in order to come here,” Weiers said. “They won’t have to buy plane tickets, rental cars or worry about hotels in other states. They can just drive into Glendale and get an incredible weekend vacation.” Crystal Lagoons Island Resort began as a vision three years ago, but it became reality in September. “In September of 2020, our city council approved the concept and the necessary documents needed to bring Crystal Lagoons Island Resort to Glendale,” said Yucca District Councilmember Joyce Clark.
