nalise Ortiz, a state representative candidate running to represent Legislative District 24 (LD-24) in the Arizona House of Representatives, held a forum to hear the concerns of local small business owners on June 9. Throughout the 90-minute forum, topics affecting Downtown Glendale such as rent pricing, community issues, staffing concerns, policy making, and the homeless issue were discussed. Supporting small business is an important part of Ortiz’s platform. “When I started coming down here to meet business owners, I realized that they had so

much to share with me, there was a lot going on, that business owners care about, and that they want to see changed for the better,” Ortiz said. “It compelled me to get everybody together in one place to hear about everyone’s concerns to see what common themes and the common threads were, and how we can work together in the future to address all of their needs, and make sure that our small business owners are thriving.” Ortiz was very pleased to hear such a robust discussion among the business owners in attendance. “I think people are very hungry to be SEE ORTIZ PAGE 3

When it comes to school shootings, the public falls back on mental health as the cause, according to Donna Bartos. But Bartos said she believes it doesn’t play as big a role as some think. “You’ll hear a lot of people talking about it being a mental health issue,” said Bartos, the founder and CEO of BLOOM365. “There are thousands and millions of people who struggle with mental health challenges, but they are not abusive or violent. It really comes down to the sense of powerlessness.” A nonprofit organization, BLOOM365 shares information to prevent and respond to all forms of violence, such as domestic,

dating, sexual gender-based and gun violence. The company serves young people between the ages of 11 and 24. BLOOM365 collaborates with many schools in Peoria, including those in the Peoria Unified School District, to provide a comprehensive program and services model to enhance the capacity of the schools to prevent and respond to violence-based issues. “The education piece, when we’re delivering it to students, does a couple of things,” Bartos said. “It really sets a culture of peer-to-peer work and accountability, on working with each other to create a safe and healthy school environment through their peer relationships. Once they all have the same information, then many of them

know how to spot these things and are better equipped on how to respond to them when they do pop up so that they’re not the only one seeing it. “They’re not the only one recognizing it, and they’re not the only one thinking that something needs to be done. Now, they’re doing it centrally in community because they’ve all had the information together. What happens during that curriculum typically, is we’re removing those big barriers that students are often faced with seeking help.” Surveys completed by BLOOM365 have yielded the fact that 80% of young people will go to a friend to discuss issues they are experiencing before they go to an adult.
