The latest sign of lost youth is pickleball’s popularity

BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Life sometimes presents signs that you have completely given up on your youth.

An example: you proudly present your AARP card to request a senior discount at the restaurant where you’re having dinner... at 4:45 on a Saturday afternoon.

Other telltale signs: You find it acceptable to wear socks with your sandals. You sing along in the car to The Monkees’ greatest hits. You have an AOL email account. Or you repeat dumb things like, “Well, age is just a number.”

Lately, I’ve noticed a new sign that you’ve quit on life. It’s all around us, people are raving about it and it looks utterly ridiculous to anyone who isn’t a freak for it. Yet, like folks who can’t stop talking about their keto diets, those who indulge and cannot stop chatter-

ing.

Enough with the pickleball stories already.

Trust me, no one cares that you almost made the Sun City Pickleball All-Stars. Because you look ridiculous playing midget tennis with a wiffleball standing on a lifesized ping-pong table.

No, I have never played pickleball. And yes, I still feel eminently qualified to comment on “America’s fastest-growing sport,” as christened by umpteen news outlets recently.

Industry stats show 4.8 million people played the game last year, double the number who played five years ago. There are an estimated 35,000 pickleball courts across the country. Last year’s national championships attracted 2,342 players competing for $90,000 in prize money.

There’s even a USA Pickleball Association, headquartered out of a P.O. box in that noted sports mecca, Surprise.

The most amazing statistic is that 4.8 million pickleball players told 480 million boring pickleball stories to the remaining 325 million Americans who don’t play.

Here’s a handy guide about sharing tales of pickleball hijinks. Ask yourself, “Did anyone playing pickleball in this story require a portable defibrillator or leave the court in handcuffs after committing felony assault or murder?”

If the answer is “no,” do not tell your pickleball story.

Look, I get it. You’ve discovered a hobby you truly love, you’re an early adopter of a great awakening across the land and you want to share your pickleball passion. I felt the same way once. I was 12 years old, and my parents got me Electronic Battleship for Christmas.

That lasted three hours, until I lost half the pieces, or about as long as it takes your average 89-year-old pickleball aficionado to cover the game’s 20-foot-by-44-foot court. Incidentally, that’s one-third the square footage of a tennis court, a selling point often cited by pickleballers.

As in, “Dude, the court’s so small, anyone

can play. It’s not even exercise. You barely have to move!”

Not that pickleball is all bad. The game does have controversy. Invented in 1965 by three boring rich families, the McCallums, Browns and Pritchards, who summered on Bainbridge Island outside Seattle, there is some dispute about the origin of the game’s name.

The Pritchards say wife JoAnn, an avid rower, named it. As she tells it, “the name of the game became pickleball, after I said it reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats.”

The more colorful legend, offered by the McCallums and Browns, is that the game was named after the Pritchards’ cockapoo puppy, Pickles, who loved to interrupt matches by running off with the wiffleball.

I love good dog stories. And when it comes to pickleball, I’m glad for two things.

One, that pickleball lovers didn’t instead take up fantasy football. Now those stories are godawful. And two, let’s be glad the dog wasn’t named Chewbarka or Poopsy. Then this column would have been a three-part series.

Mom confused by daughter’s anger

and out of the house. They are both relatively successful, stable individuals who got a good education and now contribute to society in a positive way. As a result, I have always thought I did a pretty good job as a mother, and we’ve by and large had a stable relationship in the five or 10 years since they left home.

But recently, my elder daughter has been going to therapy and as a result, bringing up things from her childhood that she says affect her adult life now. She says there was a lot of unaddressed, simmering anger in our house, and the way we “brushed things under the rug” has caused her to struggle in romantic relationships. She also says it has manifested as anxiety in her daily life.

I am hurt by this. I know I was not perfect as a parent, but she could have had it so much worse. It seems that people in her age group are almost looking for reasons to feel hard done by, and therapy is often the place where they go and find it.

I’m not sure what she is trying to achieve by bringing this up with me and my husband, and to be honest, I do not know how to respond. What do you think?

said about nearly all parents. One, they do their best with the resources and awareness they have at the time. And two, they mess it up.

As a parent myself, I know how difficult it can be to hear about the ways you came up short as a parent. It can feel extremely unfair, especially if you are comparing it to your own childhood, which may have been materially much worse. It’s not unreasonable to feel some shame around these kinds of conversations.

But here’s the thing: You should try to see it as a good thing that your daughter is bringing up these topics with you now. www.LovinLife.com

life. I would imagine that for your daughter, part of doing that is to address some of the ways that her relationship with you as a child affects her now. In other words: she wants to stop sweeping things under the rug.

The reason she is talking to you about it isn’t because she wants to punish you, it’s because she wants to feel better understood by her parents, who she loves.

She wants more connection with you, not less. This is her way of showing that.

Keep in mind that you may not see the ways that your daughter has struggled in her adult life. Just because she is stable, employed, and not a menace to society doesn’t mean she hasn’t suffered.

Issues like anxiety and depression affect so many people, and our society has really not reckoned with their deeper causes, instead jumping to medication and quick fixes to keep them at bay. Try not to dismiss her suffering as something she’s making up for attention. She is trying to better her life, and this is likely part of that process.

When you find out your child is going to therapy, it’s easy to jump to a thought like: “I can’t believe I raised a child who was messed up enough to go to therapy.” I invite you to change that thought to something like “I raised a child who was intelligent, resourced, and emotionally aware enough to seek out growth and development with the help of a therapist.” As long as your daughter is being respectful in the way she brings up these topics with you, I would try your hardest to listen to her.

One thing that might make that easier for you is a practice of self-compassion.

Remember how I mentioned the shame many parents go through when met with the ways they failed as parents?

The best antidote to that is feeling compassion for yourself, both the present and prior versions of yourself. Absolutely no one on the planet is spared from

suffering, imperfections, shortcomings, and faults. That includes you, your parents, and their parents. The only rational response to that hard truth is to forgive yourself.

Cultivating a deep well of compassion for yourself through regular practices like meditation, hypnosis audios, or daily affirmations can help you show up to conversations with your daughter more willing to hear her truth, which will always be different from your truth. After all, the best way to feel compassion for others is to first feel it for yourself first.

Our children don’t see their childhood the way we as their parents do and that is normal. As a parent something I found immensely helpful was to apologise to my child, even if I felt I was not in the wrong.

When you can say “I am so sorry you feel like that, I am so sorry that affected you,” you are giving your child the gift of being heard and acknowledged and often, that is all they are asking for.

Valley Fever Collaborative awarded $3.1M

The Valley Fever Collaborative, a UA Health Sciences-led partnership with ASU and NAU, was awarded $3.1 million in Regents’ Grant funding by the Arizona Board of Regents to start an integrated, statewide research project to identify, characterize and map hotspots and routes of exposure for Valley fever.

Valley fever is an infectious disease that affects thousands of people in Arizona every year. It is caused by Coccidioides posadasii, a fungus that lives in the soil of areas with hot summers, mild winters and little rainfall, such as the Southwest.

The fungal spores can be readily inhaled, which is how most Valley fever infections are believed to occur. Yet the amount of fungal burden in the soil and air, the degree to which these fungal spores travel, and the potential for new areas to be colonized with the organism are unknown.

“We know Arizona is responsible for two-thirds of all U.S. Valley fever infections, but just looking across the land we can’t tell which places the fungus grows or are the source of so many infections,” says Dr. John Galgiani, director of the Valley Fever Center for Excellence in the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and a member of the BIO5 Institute.

“This study will try to connect the dots between strains that cause people to get sick, where in the land they come from and what it is about those hot spots that makes the fungus thrive. With this new information, we might prevent infections at work sites or even for everyone who lives here.”

Six individual projects will take place using a Regents’ Grant funded by the Technology and Research Initiative Fund.

Sierra Tucson certified to help veterans

Sierra Tucson has completed certification that will allow its employees to better serve active-duty military members, veterans and their families.

The program, run through California-based nonprofit PsychArmor, certifies

Sierra Tucson as a “Veteran Ready Healthcare Organization.” Staff members participated in a variety of data-driven and evidence-based virtual training courses that help enhance the level of connection between civilians and those who have ties to the military.

At the conclusion of the training, Sierra Tucson and its employees became certified through PsychArmor.

“Sierra Tucson continues to be a leader in healthcare and is committed to providing exceptional medical and clinical care for our Veterans and their loved ones,” says Valerie Kading, Sierra Tucson chief executive officer.

“Our Red, White and Blue program is a premier program designed to focus solely on our veterans and provide the support necessary to meet their unique needs and the needs of their loved ones. We are proud of our continued focus on and prioritization of this population, and we are pleased that our entire team is dedicated to providing veterans with culturally sensitive and competent care.”

The partnership between PsychArmor and the Acadia Healthcare Military & Family Support Services program will allow a number of Acadia facilities, which includes Sierra Tucson, to receive this certification.

PsychArmor is the only national institute that offers free online education to assist military service members, Veterans and their families and has a support center that is staffed by mental health experts.

“It’s more important than ever to be able to provide specialized care for those who have served our country,” says Dr. Michael V. Genovese, Acadia Healthcare chief medical officer.

“The rates of substance use disorders, depression and suicide are considerably higher for active-duty military members and Veterans than they are for the general population.

“We believe that PsychArmor’s exceptional resources will allow Sierra Tucson’s staff to cultivate a treatment environment that helps us better understand how to help these brave individuals.”

Practitioners take holistic approach to wellness

BY LAURA LATZKO Self-care is a multifaceted idea that includes mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Center 4 Self-Care in Tucson addresses these areas through individual sessions and group classes and workshops.

Owned by four women—Katie Phill, Stacy Wright, Adrienne Asta and Trish Nichols—the collective of practitioners is focused on massage therapy. Also offered are yoga, acupuncture, energy healing, continuing education for massage therapists and locally source healing products.

Phill says self-care is often misunderstood.

“Self-care doesn’t just mean taking bubble baths,” Phill says.

“Really, it is all the parts of us that need to be cared for, our bodies, our mind, our

emotions, nutrition and taking bubble baths. I feel like COVID has made people slow down because they’ve had to stay home. So, they recognize that they want to tend to their stress or tension…I think people are reaching for self-care more than ever, and they are craving touch, community and inspiration.”

Although clients visit for massages for various problem areas, many people have recently had issues with their backs, necks and shoulders. Phill says massages can also help with circulation, calming of the nervous system and digestion.

Each quarter, the collective puts on free Wellness Wednesday events in which experts come in and give talks on topics such as mindfulness and meditation practices, forms of movement therapy, nutrition or creative writing.

This quarter, Wellness Wednesday featured a workshop on understanding trauma.

The public is welcome to attend group classes as well. The next one is Wednesday, May 18, and it focuses on Yomassage, a combination of focused breathing, meditation and yoga positions with massages.

“There’s always some kind of educational component and hopefully some resources for the people who attend to understand how to take it to the next level, whatever the topic was,” Phill says.

Center 4 Self Care was founded in January 2020, but quickly had to close due to the pandemic. The practitioners offered one-on-one sessions for about a year, but group classes and workshops didn’t restart until last summer.

Along with the founders, there are also five other practitioners, all of whom set their own prices and have their own specialties.

“Each person runs their own scheduling and payments…That’s what makes it a collective,” Phill says.

The practitioners’ resumes include massages along with reiki energy healing, craniosacral or acupuncture techniques.

The center also has a retail space with

self-care and healing items, such as journals, crystals, bath products and skincare product with locally sourced ingredients.

Its signature product is Pain Potion, which is applied to the skin to help with pain, inflammation, tension and injury.

Phill says the collective plans to keep expanding on its healing cream line and offer self-care tools that patients can use in their own time.

“Things you would use at home to massage the knots that you get between your shoulders and different types of self-massage tools that you would use at home, we are looking to branch into that too,” Phill says.

Center 4 Self Care extends its education efforts to its social media pages, where practitioners will demonstrate stretching techniques or tips on working at home.

As part of a contract with the nonprofit organization COPE Community Services Inc., the center provides group meditation classes at residential rehabilitation centers.

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI When Arizona Cardinals fans watch DeAndre Hopkins, they see a talented, spirited athlete who maintains a tough exterior.

His mother, Sabrina Greenlee, witnesses something a little different.

“He’s always been a momma’s boy — although he might not admit it,” the South Carolina resident says with a laugh.

“I’m definitely proud of him, not only on the football field but the businessman he’s become as well.”

Life wasn’t always so playful for their family. Greenlee’s story is filled with cycles of abuse, teen pregnancy and a violent attempt on her life that ultimately left her completely blind. Although her life has been “no crystal stair,” she credits her faith as the fuel that equips her with the confidence and tenacity to inspire others to repair, recreate and restore their purpose and infinite potential.

Greenlee will soon share her story through her memoir and is preparing for BRON Studios to make a movie about her life.

“It’s a little surreal that they would make a depiction about my life,” she says. “I’m embracing it each day. I’m even thinking about who’s going to portray me. When they asked, I says, ‘Taraji P. Henson.’ She’s the same age as me and has an amazing personality. I am excited, but now I can’t believe this is really happening.”

Working on the memoir and film has been trying for Greenlee. They unveiled a lot of darkness, but it led to healing.

“Between the two, I did a lot of meditation and a lot of floating in the water to relieve stress,” she says. “Definitely, between writing the book proposal and the movie script, a lot of self-reflection and a lot of healing came about.”

Through this platform, she and her team aim to educate and empower as many women and children as possible through mentorship, counseling and outreach. She intends to continue raising awareness year-round by unmasking the myth and unveiling the many different shades of purple surrounding domestic abuse.

S.M.O.O.O.T.H. has started operating in Arizona, which marks its third state.

“I’m really ecstatic, with DeAndre having this amazing year coming up,” she says.

“We take women who are in shelters, as they’re transitioning into their own dwelling — whether it be a home, a condo, it doesn’t matter. My philosophy is if you have a key, we can help you.”

Greenlee and two S.M.O.O.O.T.H. members are certified life coaches who set the women up for success.

“Most of the members of S.M.O.O.O.T.H. haven’t gone through domestic violence themselves, which is pretty amazing,” Greenlee explained. “I get to teach them and take them into shelters. It’s really great that they haven’t been through it, but they’re prepared and they did the training to understand what the ladies need to go through to heal.”

Greenlee is a recipient of the 2020 Houston Humanitarian Awards. She has been featured on ESPN, USA Today and the Emmy-winning “Living in Fear: Chronicles I and II,” and regularly appears on local media outlets from South Carolina to Texas. Sabrina appeared on ABC news with the CEO of the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

“The ESPN article was definitely amazing,” she says. “It got so much exposure.

We had an outpouring of support from the NFL and NBA. People knew who I was then. While we’re sitting in the airport, I get, ‘Is that…?’ My daughter just starts shaking her head like, ‘That’s her.’”

Cobb was named after Greenlee’s brother, Terry Smith, who died in 1997.

Besides her family, faith has helped Greenlee through her turbulent life.

“Nine, 10 years ago, there was no way I could have thought about faith,” she says. “I was just so broken and really in a hurtful place.

The Rock Star Maestro László Veres conducts last season with Tucson Pops

After 26 seasons as the Tucson Pops Orchestra conductor, Veres will step down following the spring season.

The Tucson Pops Orchestra’s Music Under the Stars Spring Season runs from Sunday, May 8, to Sunday, June 12, at the Georges DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center in Reid Park.

“He’s an amazing man,” says Frances Bettinger, the orchestra’s executive director.

“It has been such a privilege to be associated with him.”

Khris Dodge, an educator and musician who has worked in the Tucson arts community for 30 years, will take over maestro duties in the fall.

During Veres’ tenure, he added professional musicians to the Tucson Pops, which is made up almost entirely of Tucson Symphony Orchestra musicians.

“The orchestra is so much better, and I don’t mean that as a negative to anyone prior to him,” Bettinger says.

“He has built the orchestra. They are much more a professional level. He has done an amazing job of putting together these programs that people just really love.”

Veres has a strong rapport with his audiences. Before each concert, he distributes programs and chats with attendees.

“I love my audience, and I appreciate that they come out to hear us. I like to get them involved,” Veres says.

“Every so often, I make them sing, whistle or dance. Maybe we do the macarena together. Also, before we play a bigger piece, I usually tell them what to listen for, and they enjoy that. Because I’ve been doing it for so many years, these young people grew up with me. Now, they have a family of their own.”

Special memories

Veres has had plenty of fond memories during his tenure with the orchestra.

Among them is when he proposed to his wife, Frances, a violinist in the orchestra, while he was on the podium.

“Her answer was, ‘Why not?’ Veres says.

Veres’ biggest challenge as a conductor is the weather — humidity, wind, rain, heat and bugs. Battling the elements is worth the joy of bringing music to others.

“My white coat is sometimes black by intermission because of all of the bugs,” Veres says.

“It makes us happy to see the audience with smiles on their face. You can see it in their eyes that they are enjoying it. We did our job. Music is very special.”

Hailing from Hungary, Veres was the principal clarinetist with the Tucson Symphony for 16 years. A 30-year teacher, Veres is the founding conductor of Arizona Symphonic Winds. He’ll continue to work with it.

Veres says it was a hard decision, but felt it was the right time to step down from the pops orchestra.

“I’m leaving behind these incredible musicians,” Veres says.

“I was able to make wonderful music with them throughout the years…And I of course will miss the audience reaction.”

Casual feel

Music Under the Stars concerts are casual, and the orchestra invites the audience to arrive eat to chat and eat with others. Food trucks provide meals for a charge.

“In the audience, people bring their lawn chairs or blankets,” Veres says.

“They set up for the day with their picnic baskets. They are visiting with friends, having a good time.”

The orchestra plays a variety of genres, including classical, Broadway and film scores. Listeners are often exposed to new styles of music.

“There’s something about listening to music live and seeing the musicians play it that makes it that much more personal,” Bettinger says.

2022 spring season

During the 2022 spring season, the orchestra will have world premieres, guest conductors and guest artists and groups.

The May 8 Mother’s Day concert will feature junior mariachi band Mariachi Aztlán from Pueblo High School and guest conductor Mark Wolfram. Wolfram will conduct “March Lászlo,” a piece he wrote for Veres.

The program will also include Veres’ arrangement of “My Yiddishe Momme,” which honors his mother’s memory.

Catalina High School junior Tyler Kebo will play marimba in “Concerto No. 2” on May 15.

The orchestra will premiere “Lászlo Scherzo Op. 60,” a piece written by local composer Bob Atwell, on May 22.

Concertmaster Michael Fan, a 30-year pops orchestra violin player, will be featured on May 22 during “Meditation” from the opera “Thais.”

The orchestra will also spotlight trumpet player Jason Carder, who has worked with Yanni, in “A Trumpeter’s Lullaby” the same night.

During the pre-Memorial Day concert on May 29, the orchestra will play “The Armed Forces Salute.”

Fan says the musicians were excited to return during the fall season and are looking forward to the spring season.

“Playing with people, listening, reacting and being together, that’s a huge part of playing music. We were missing it,” Fan says.

Usually donning dark trousers, a white dinner jacket and red bowtie, Veres will wear a special uniform inspired by John Philip Sousa on May 29.

“Because I served in the Army, I put it

Armen Dirtadian, a performer who has worked with the Gaslight Theatre, Invisible Theatre, Southern Arizona Light Opera Company and Arizona Theatre Company, will make a special appearance with the orchestra on June 5.

The spring season wraps up on June 12 with a premiere of Peter Fine’s piece “Rainstorm” from “The Journey,” which he will guest conduct.

During the piece “Best Broadway Marches,” young conductors will take the podium.

The season will conclude with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” during which audience members play drums to mimic canons.

Veres traditionally ends all concerts with “America the Beautiful.”

“I’m not from this country, and I fell in love with this country. I have to play something patriotic for that,” Veres says.

“When we perform it, I really mean it. I really put my heart into it.”

Going Dutch 5-year-old restaurant moves to a Midtown location

BY VALERIE VINYARD The Dutch Eatery and Refuge has found a new haven.

About a month ago, the restaurant moved from its University Boulevard location near UA into the former Pita Jungle location in Williams Centre on Broadway Boulevard and Craycroft Road.

“It’s been extremely positive,” says general manager Collyn Glaspie, 28.

“We’re getting a lot of people from the surrounding neighborhoods who are excited there’s a nonchain restaurant.”

The Dutch serves modern European cuisine and offers brunch and dinner Monday to Saturday.

Chef-owner Marcus van Winden kept many of the original location’s menu items and introduced new dishes, including some with an unusual twist.

“They can expect to see some dishes they recognize but with a European modern twist,” Glaspie says.

Take the quail Wellington ($28), where the bird is wrapped in puff pastry with mushroom duxelle, boursin and proscuitto. Made to order, the dish is served with green beans and demi-glace.

“The quail was so, so good,” says Lisa Sussenberg, a 26-year-old retail worker who enjoyed the dish on a recent Friday.

“I’ve never had quail that way. It was memorable and a little decadent.”

One of Glaspie’s favorite entrees is the dry-aged pork chop stamppot ($32), which is served with potatoes smashed with sauerkraut, caramelized apples and whole grain mustard.

Other dishes have roots in Indonesia, which is purposeful, Glaspie said.

“We want to be able to offer a wide variety of dishes,” he says. “The (Indonesian dishes) offer a difference from the meatheavy and bread-heavy dishes that are traditionally European.”

Nasi goreng ($22) is an Indonesian fried rice dish with ham, shallots, garlic and sambal, a sunny side up egg and kecap manis, an Indonesian sweet soy sauce.

The entree comes with atjar tjampoer, a mixed pickled vegetable dish, peanut sauce and krupuk (cracker).

Glaspie described the decor as “warm masculine industrial,” which lends a cozy feel to the 4,000-square-foot restaurant.

They kept the giant wall mirror, the metal pipes hanging from the ceiling and some of the lighting, and brought in new tables and chairs, and resurfaced the bar.

A couple of walk-up windows. The Dutch’s capacity is 180 for inside and out, including the bar.

Van Winden, 42, owns The Dutch with his wife, 38-year-old Nicole. The two met while working on a cruise ship.

working on Holland America Cruise Line, where he was the fine dining chef and I was assistant cruise director,” she says.

“We love the hospitality industry and have had the pleasure of working in inns and hotels around the country before finally settling down in my hometown of Tucson to open The Dutch in 2017.”

Nicole van Winden notes that her Netherlands-born husband uses his extensive experience to offer a variety of dishes.

“Chef Marcus is from the Netherlands but has worked in French and Mediterranean kitchens,” she said.

“So while you will find classic Dutch dishes, like patat oorlog (war fries), we are also excited to serve items such as homemade hollandaise on our lobster benedict, duck a l’orange tacos, escargot and steak tartar.”

The duck l’orange tacos ($18) are slowbraised duck, brussels slaw, pickled red onion and cotija cheese on corn tortillas.

The tacos, like several offerings, are gluten free.

Fish and chips fans will want to order the Kibbeling ($16), a beer-battered cod with traditional Dutch seasoning. The dish comes with tartar sauce, coleslaw and fries.

During the 3 to 6 p.m. happy hour, all bar snacks and bottles of wine are halfpriced, with $5 well drinks and draft beers.

poutine. A healthy serving of hand-cut fries topped with a peanut sauce, mayonnaise and onion and in a metal cone.

A traditional Dutch drinking snack is the bitterballen ($9; $4.50 for happy hour). Six fried balls are served with a side of mustard. The creamy filling might put off some people, but after you dip the crunchy ball into the hearty mustard, the snack has a flavor reminiscent of beef stew.

We especially liked the lumpia ($7; $3.50 for happy hour), which is a type of spring roll commonly found in Indonesia and the Philippines. The three crispy rolls are made of thin crepe-like pastry skin that envelop ground chicken and vegetables. Dip the rolls into the sweet accompanying chili sauce.

A fun cocktail menu ($10-$14) offers punny takes of restaurant lingo. The Yes, Chef ($14) is a blend of High West rye, luxardo, amaro and sweet vermouth, and Corner ($10), which is “dealer’s choice” that “tastes like you don’t know what’s coming around the corner but you hope for the best.”

During a recent sold-out wild game and beer dinner ($68), van Winden showcased his culinary range with such dishes as duck three ways; frog legs; rabbit; bison short rib; and a cherry clafoutis dessert to end the feast. Each of the five courses was paired with a Dragoon beer.

BY JAN D’ATRI Every May, I feature a wonderful, original recipe from my momma to honor her and her great classically Italian dishes for Mother’s Day! She’s known for her foolproof dishes that we can count on for a delicious and memorable meal. This month, it’s her chicken scaloppine.

This is the dish that put her famous restaurant in Lake Tahoe on the map.

Once you taste it, you’ll see why.

When she created the dish in 1955, she prepared the dish with veal, but we have found that slices of chicken breast pounded into tender medallions are as flavorful.

I’m so excited to share momma’s scaloppine with you because this is a gourmet dish that is expensive at Italian

restaurants, but now you can make it at home anytime you like.

It really only takes about 5 minutes to make, once you have all of your items prepped. Preparation is important because it will sauté quickly. This was the first recipe we chose when creating our first cookbook, “Momma & Me & You,” and it was the first time momma shared her recipe from D’Atri’s Italian Restaurant in Lake Tahoe.

Momma’s Chicken Scaloppine a la Marsala Serves 4 Ingredients:

Hair loss can be Good sleep for good health avoided — maybe Ask the Expert

BY TUCSON MEDICAL CENTER Millions of Americans aren’t getting the rest they need for physical and mental wellness.

For a long time, the typical patient with sleep apnea was characterized as a middle-aged man, slightly overweight with an enlarged neck. It can actually impact anyone.

“The worst case I’ve ever seen was a 90-pound grandmother,” says David Sholes, TMC Sleep Center manager at Tucson Medical Center.

“She had a narrow airway and when she relaxed and it collapsed, she had severe symptoms.”

More than an inconvenience

Tossing and turning at night is not just an inconvenience. It can have profound health impacts. Waking up throughout the night, Sholes explains, can disrupt normal sleep cycles.

The first stage of sleep is considered twilight sleep with the second stage of sleep slightly deeper and where most patients will spend the majority of the night sleeping in. The next stage of sleep is considered slow wave sleep and is considered the most restorative sleep, with the final stage — rapid eye movement sleep — or dream sleep. While some of the deeper stages of sleep are the most restorative of all stages of sleep, cycling between those stages without interruptions is equally important.

“A sleep cycle typically takes about 90 minutes to get through. So, if your sleep cycle is interrupted, you don’t necessarily start off again where you stop. Instead, you start back at the first stage and that circumvents the renewal that should happen in sleep,” Sholes says.

While a lack of Zzzs occasionally might throw you off your game, chronic poor sleep can impact your appetite, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, your immune system, mental health and dementia.

The first step to better sleep is to develop a bedtime routine and stick with it, so your body knows when it’s time to sleep.

The second step, Sholes said, is to think about comfort. It is well documented that people sleep better when the temperature is cooler. If you have pain, consider visiting a pain clinic, such as the TMC Integrative Pain Center, to find solutions.

Sholes says it’s also important to know that how fast we get to sleep and how often we reach deep sleep typically changes as a natural part of the aging process.

“Sometimes people get frustrated because they’re not sleeping like they were in their 20s. It might help reduce frustration to know it’s just going to take you a little longer to get to sleep,” he says.

“That’s why it’s so important to be a gatekeeper of your sleep hygiene.”

Sholes suggests changing a few things at a time and keeping a sleep diary to document any positive or negative changes.

“If you’ve done all of these things and you’re still having trouble with better sleep, then there may be a reason and it should be investigated with a sleep study,” he says.

or pattern baldness, is the most common type of alopecia; it affects about onethird of us. I’m in that third with you.

Men start to get pattern baldness at the hairline and crown. This can lead to complete baldness. Women’s hair loss is usually limited to thinning; they rarely go totally bald.

There are a few steps you can take to preserve your hair:

1. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the hair. So, forget braids, ponytails, cornrows and tight hair rollers. The pulling causes some hair loss, especially along the sides of the scalp. This type of hair loss is called traction alopecia. If the pulling scars the scalp, it can cause permanent hair loss.

2. Brushing or combing too much can break hair, so keep them to a minimum.

Use combs with wide teeth and brushes with smooth tips. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair, so show care when you do your hair after a shower.

3. Shampooing too often is bad for your hair. Use a cream rinse or conditioner after shampooing to make it easier to comb. And don’t dry your hair by rubbing it with a towel.

We lose hair as we age. Pattern baldness affects many more men than women. About 25% of men begin to bald by the time they are 30 years old, and about two-thirds have at least a balding pattern by age 60.

Androgenetic alopecia is caused by heredity; a history of it on either side of your family increases your risk of balding.

Medicines may help slow or prevent the development of common baldness.

Rogaine is available without a prescription. It is applied to the scalp. Men and women can use it. Propecia is available with a prescription. It comes in pills and is only for men. It may take up to six months before you can tell if one of these medicines is working.

Hair transplants and scalp reduction surgery are available to treat androgenetic alopecia when more conservative measures have failed. During transplantation a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon takes tiny plugs of skin, each containing one to several hairs, from the back or side of your scalp. The plugs are then implanted into the bald sections.

Scalp reduction, as the name implies, means decreasing the area of bald skin on your head.

4. Don’t use hot-oil hair treatments or chemicals in permanents. These may cause inflammation of the hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss.

There are about 100,000 hairs in the average scalp.

Sensate is a wearable, palm-sized device and audio app that tones a person’s vagus nerve to be able to naturally self-regulate stress responses and find an inner calm.

Created by Stefan Chmelick and Anna Gudmundson after years in the stress management field, Sensate centers around sound-based technology.

“Literally what happened was that we had been using sound-base technology in the clinic for a while,” Chmelick says about the mother company, BioSelf Technology.

“I had been using sound as a healing for decades. We were using meditation-type technology.

“It was using one of these when I sort of had this eureka moment where I realized we could get rid of most of the hardware by turning the body into the hardware, which is what Sensate does. It takes the concept of infrasound on a transceiver, and it miniaturizes them and puts them on your chest and uses the bone conductions phenomenon to relay this low-frequency sound into each user’s thorax.”

In simpler terms, the device works to create a sensation “similar to humming or chaunting” throughout the body that helps calm the nervous system.

“How it works is that you put in your headphones, you put the Sensate on your sternum and then you start a session in the app,” Gudmundson explains. “At the moment there are 14 different sessions www.LovinLife.com

“Then either recline or lay down and just do your session. You don’t have to do anything, and I think that is what people really like is that it doesn’t require effort, you just do something that is very natural.”

According to Chmelik, positively interacting with the vagus nerve “appears to be that one thing that all human beings respond to equally” in terms of meditative medicine.

The vagus nerve’s tone influences longevity and health span, Chemlik adds.

“You can measure cholesterol, blood pressure and a bunch of different things but all of those are essentially controlled by the activity of the vagus nerve,” Chemlik says.

“It’s connection to the gut and the brain, the brain and the cardiovascular system, the brain and the immune system, nervous system and the connective tissue.”

Both of Gudmendson’s parents use Sensate.

“I’ve never had my dad doing anything like this,” she says. “Most of the users use it because they struggle to meditate yet find it really easy to relax with Sensate— that is worth so much for a lot of people.”

Baby boomers having problems sleeping — including post-menopausal women — find Sensate beneficial. About 44% of Sensate users are older than 45.

“Long term meditators are happier, healthier and have better outcomes for chronic degenerative diseases,” Chmelik says.

“The main core of our user group are people who don’t sleep well, struggle to relax and don’t really manage with a regular meditation practice,” Gudmundson says.

“It takes discipline. It’s great to start meditating at any particular point in time and my mother is also practicing that, but just to have something that helps with relaxing is really important.”

She says this is especially notable now because of pandemic-induced stress.

“That will age you, so to be able to manage all of these external stressors and not put all of that toxicity into the body (is

very beneficial),” Gudmundson says.
