After being virtually stopped for more than a month, the West Valley took cautious steps forward last week. And that’s pretty much the way Gov. Doug Ducey wants it. Like a lifeguard at a busy pool, Ducey’s message is, “Walk, don’t run.” Hair cuts were back, at places like Senior’s Barber Shop. And at West Valley shopping areas, including Crossroads at Tolleson and Westgate, people wandered between restaurants and shops over the weekend. Ducey announced May 12 that his stay-home executive order would end three days later. “This is not a green light to speed,” he added. “This is a green light to proceed.”

Though it is still a far cry from “business as usual,” West Valley cities are reopening some facilities —just in time for Memorial Day weekend, in some cases. Then again, with schools and most businesses closed for two months, the “threeday weekend” concept is a bit unusual during the COVID-19 pandemic. And, while Goodyear and Avondale are opening splash pads, Buckeye facilities
remain closed. Litchfield Park is mulling what it will open and when, according to City Manager Bill Stephens. After keeping Arizona in “stay-home” mode since mid-March, Gov. Doug Ducey said May 12 Arizona was in Phase 1 of White House guidelines for “opening up America again.” “The city of Goodyear is preparing to open additional amenities since the
