Three Deer Valley School District teachers in Glendale schools were honored for 202021. Debbie Moore was among the 11 winners of Teacher of the Year awards, while April Woodward and Courtney Leman were among the record six recipients of Rookie of the Year prizes.

A teacher for 25 years, Moore, 60, has been at Mountain Ridge High School for seven years. At Mountain Ridge, she teaches a variety of classes, including marketing, advanced marketing, career and college readiness with ethics, financial analysis, sports marketing and internship.

She also coaches the men’s volleyball team. Moore said her students seem to really enjoy her classes, and the feeling is mutual. “My favorite thing is being there at that moment where they’re trying to make a decision on what they think they might want to do with their future and being right there to help them see all of the different opportunities,” Moore said. Receiving a Teacher of the Year award and being recognized for her hard work is important to her. She said there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work. “There’s a lot of emotion that goes into coaching and teaching these kids that people just don’t seem to understand and value,” Moore said. “A lot of times it feels like you’re rowing a SEE TEACHERS PAGE 4

Mural to grace Glendale Family Advocacy Center BY JORDAN ROGERS

An inspirational mural will soon welcome victims as they enter the Glendale Family Advocacy Center. The mural — which shares a message of overcoming adversity — measures 1,500 square feet and is expected to be completed by September. Lt. Rachael Bousman of the special victims unit said the center has been discussing the mural since they moved into the building
roughly 10 years ago. “It’s a beautiful, big wall,” Bousman said. “That alley is used all the time by a lot of people for foot traffic. It’s just a beautiful blank canvas to put that mural on. It’ll look gorgeous there.” The Glendale Family Advocacy Center handles child crimes such as abuse, sexual abuse, pornography and endangerment and all adult sex, elder abuse and domestic violence crimes.
