Residents can offer input on plan for parks, recreation and services law talk

Scottsdale residents are invited to provide input regarding the City’s parks, libraries or social services by attending upcoming meetings.

The meetings will also present to the public results of a parks survey, which revealed that 80 percent of the participants used City libraries, 75 percent visit neighborhood parks and 97 percent rated the condition of the parks and facilities excellent or good.

Those results, along with community input from the upcoming presentations, will be considered as part of a drafted update of the Community Services Master Plan, which establishes City services regarding parks, libraries and social services for the next 10 years. Officials will discuss with residents the full range of survey results and other elements of the draft master plan.

“It’s a check again on how we are perceived about things that we are doing well or that need improving in the services or the programs we offer,” said Bill Murphy, director of community services for the City of Scottsdale, of the parks survey.

The community hearings will create a “dialogue to get questions and answers from the public,” Murphy said.

Murphy expects the meetings will help gather information on what residents want from not just the parks and outdoor recreational programs, but activities at indoor recreation facilities as well. The discussions will focus on parks and recreation, but residents are encouraged to discuss human services, too.

“A document will be drafted (based on these discussions) by the consultants by the end of May,” Murphy said. The City Council is expected to approve the plan in June.

Murphy said the plan will be a “blueprint as we move forward in the future.” The plan, which was last updated in 2004, will help to improve on the offerings of recreational activities, such as the Indian Bend Wash and the walking, bicycling and inline skating, along with volleyball and tennis, to hiking trails throughout the city. “(Scottsdale) is an active community,” Murphy said.

“We really hope to see and hear some good voices coming to the meetings,” Murphy said. “We are looking to answer any questions people may have about (the plan).”

MentorKidsUSA has been a stabilizing force for at-risk Valley children

By Kaddie Stephens Mitch Sivertson wanted to get connected and give back to his community. After searching online for various organizations, Sivertson found MentorKidsUSA. Founded in 1997 by Orv Krieger, Scottsdale-based MentorKidsUSA is a nonprofit organization that focuses on implementing Christian values into the lives of at-risk children through one-on-one mentoring. For Sivertson’s part, he mentors 11-yearold Jose (last name withheld), whose mother had been diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t afford proper treatment. During difficult times, Siverton provided the youngster with guidance and some stability.

Through the good graces of Sivertson’s close friend, Jose’s mother was able to undergo necessary surgeries and chemotherapy to treat her cancer, and is now back in Jose’s life, healthy and doing well.

“I can’t describe how rewarding the whole thing has been,” said Sivertson, also a MentorKidsUSA board mem-

ber. “It’s just absolutely remarkable how things fall into place.”

During the past few years, the number of children served by MentorKidsUSA has gone up 53 percent, and they were guided by more than 500 volunteers. Local churches and businesses, as well as the kids, their families, mentors and volunteers, come together to create long-term solutions to the challenges facing youngsters.

In Phoenix, there are 250,000 youths living in poverty. The city leads the nation in disconnected youngsters.

MentorKidsUSA allows children to “reach their God-given talents, and guides them on the road to success” said CEO Chuck Westerlund.

In 2010, MentorKidsUSA noticed an increased need in certain Phoenix communities, so it created the South Phoenix and the Palomino promise neighborhoods. These promise neighborhoods “consist of three tiers: youth, family and community,” Westerlund said.

These promise neighborhoods con-

sist of community gardens, and afterschool and summer programs.

“They focus on getting families involved and moving all three tiers forward together,” Westerlund said.

With the help of local businesses, the promise neighborhoods are growing every day.

McCarthy Construction gave MentorKidsUSA a grant to build a new basketball court in the Phoenix promise neighborhood. Volunteer athletes teach kids soccer, baseball and basketball as well as how to maintain character and integrity.

“We teach them to win and be humble, and to lose and be a good sport,” Westerlund explained. “We focus on characteristics to make them whole as they move forward in life.”

Group mentoring has been added to the promise neighborhoods, but some mentors, such as Sivertson, have only

one youth. A lot depends on the mentor’s time and the youngster’s needs.

“To spend time with somebody is really showing them love.

What’s important is just the consistency,” Sivertson said.

Some of the troubled youngsters are dealing with things below the surface that people are unaware of.

Sivertson believes it’s important to be straightforward, but to “also be mindful that these children are constantly in flux.

“We need to tread carefully when we are talking about the development of a child,” he added.

But thanks to programs like MentorKidsUSA, these children are better equipped to handle whatever life may throw their way.

Learn to stay safe around water at April Pools Day

By Kaddie Stephens With temperatures already in the high 90s, days spent at the pool don’t seem too far off. But as much fun as family pool days can be, it’s important to remember to be safe around the water.

According to John Bunnell, the recreation coordinator for the Eldorado Aquatic and Fitness Center, there were 152 water-related incidents in the Valley last year.

Because there’s always that fear, the City of Scottsdale Aquatics Department is hosting April Pools Day, which is set for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Eldorado pool.

The day will include multiple water safety events, lifeguarding and CPR demonstrations, water and sun safety tips, and a mock rescue with the Scottsdale Fire Department.

The goal of the event is to reinforce the message of safety around all types of water, said Lori Schmidt, the public education officer for the Scottsdale Fire Department and the president of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona.

“We want them to understand that, especially with little kids, places like toilets and buckets can cause drowning as well,” Schmidt said.

The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona organizers will also promote CPR classes to the April Pools Day attendees, emphasizing that it is just as important to know mouth-to-mouth CPR as it is handson CPR. According to Bunnell, the aquatic center is partnering with SRP to promote canal awareness and safety. The Arizona Department of Health Services will be at the event providing education on waterborne diseases.

The fire department will offer tours of its fire trucks. After the event, the pool is offering a free hour of swimming from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Jessica Curtis, a member of the advisory council for the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona, lost her son two years ago in a drowning incident, and wants to remind parents that even if you think you have all the mechanisms to keep your children safe, they don’t always work.

“It’s nice for the community to come together for families…to come and learn,” Curtis said. “It’s important for people to not live in the mindset that ‘It will never happen to me,’ because when you live in that mindset is when it will happen to you.”

The Scottsdale Culinary Festival wrapped up its 37th successful season in mid-April. The Burger Battle has become one of the most highly anticipated competitions staged during the festival, and this year’s was fought in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Hotel Valley Ho. Hopdoddy captured the “Best Burger” crown in

the judge’s category for its Primetime Burger, an Akaushi Beef patty topped with Brie cheese, truffle aioli, arugula, caramelized onions and steak sauce. Zinburger Wine & Burger Bar was runner-up with the Mel Brooks Burger, while ZuZu at Hotel Valley Ho took third place for its Gala Burger.

In the People’s Choice category, Aioli Gourmet Burgers took first place for its Signature Italiano Slider, ZuZu at was runner-up for the Gala Burger and Bootleggers Modern American Smokehouse earned third place for its Bootastic Burger. Where’s the beef?

Greasewood Flat, an iconic Scottsdale landmark, rode off into the sunset on March 31. Local residents had the opportunity to purchase a piece of Arizona history when Surplus Asset Management auctioned off many of the fabled saloon’s rustic treasures on April 11. Some of the most interesting purchases: The bar’s classic welcome sign sold for $11,000, an inoperable 50-caliber anti-aircraft gun was auctioned for $9,500 and a 1936 Ford pickup truck was scooped up for $8,000. All of them are treasures that earned the bar the moniker “one of

the oldest, quirkiest and most classic bars” in America.

The Scottsdale City Council finally axed the Day Tripper trolley, which shuttled visitors between a dozen hotels on Scottsdale Road between Scottsdale Fashion Square and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. Even after five years, the Day Tripper trolley never attracted the number of riders the city was hoping for, and the City saved $300,000 by derailing it. Instead, the funds from a hotel bed tax will be funneled to the City’s Downtown Trolley, which has proved to be more popular with visitors and residents.

“All of the bands are local, and they all play cover music,” said Carolyn Moyle, assistant recreation coordinator for the park. “My goal is to get many genres of music, including Motown, funk, current Top 40, the classics and country.”

Between 2,500 and 3,000 people are expected to attend each show.

Here in this remarkable refuge from the everyday, golf and the good life can be enjoyed by young professionals and their

In addition to the train ride, the Goldfield Mine Tour ($5 to $8) is definitely not to be missed. My kids were apprehensive because they only saw a dark mine shaft entrance at street level and didn’t know what to expect.

After a short walk down into the mine, our tour guide described the history of the town and the mine and how it went from one of the richest gold veins in the United States to a complete bust in just a few years.

We saw original mining equipment and wondered how miners could work prolonged hours in such a space.

One of the staffers said that the mine has had some unusual and unexplained activities that have occurred

The Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon also is a must-see attraction. The vintage-style saloon was moved from Tombstone by one of the town’s owners, “Mayor” Bob Schoose, who bought it in the 1980s and restored it. The best views of the Superstition Mountains are on the back patio and our family enjoyed the mild weather while noshing on mammoth burgers and throwing back some cold sarsaparilla sodas.

Other attractions include the shooting gallery, Goldfield’s Historic Museum, live gun fights, livery stables with available carriage and horseback riding and an entire street of artisan stores. These stores boast everything from Southwestern foods, fudge, dolls, Mexican imports, metal art, a plant nursery to rocks, fossils and souvenirs.

Step 1 If you’re like me, you have a lot of nail polish in a lot of colors and some just aren’t fun to wear anymore. Luckily, they make great enamel for this project and lend themselves to some very colorful designs.

Aside from the usual solid blocks of color, my girls and I experimented with different techniques to make the paint mix together.

We found that if the polish was applied thickly and then corresponding colors were dropped on top, the paint would start to mix together and make some really neat mosaic designs.

We also found that we could take this approach one step further and after the colors had been applied, take a toothpick and swirl the polish together for a marbled finish.

Another idea would be to apply small rhinestones to the wet polish for a more blingy approach to these keychains.

Step 2 It’s important to let the washers dry for at least 24 hours or else the paint could get smudged during assembly. Once the paint is dry, turn over the largest washer and use either puff paint or a permanent marker to write your holiday greetings to the gift recipient: “Happy Mother’s Day, Love Sara” for example.

Step 3 The final step is as simple as loading the keyring the same way you would put a key on a keychain. I started with the largest of the washers and used it to prop open the keyring so as to avoid scratching the polish. I layered other washers on top of the largest one and then curled them all on at the same time. The washers make a pretty belllike sound when they knock together, which I call an added bonus.

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake Delicious, juicy pink grapefruit is in season from October through May, so this is a great month to try a sweet treat with a sensational citrus twist— the Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake.

First about the cake.

It really should have been called a 4-pound cake, because back in the 1700s, when someone baked up this invention, the original pound cake called for 1 pound each of butter, sugar, eggs and flour.

Since then, the pound cake has slimmed down in ingredients and in size, and fresh citrus is often added to the basic mixture. While lemon is the darling of citrus when it comes to desserts, there is a sweet alternative in abundance right now in your store’s produce department. Pink grapefruit is juicy, sweet, inexpensive and large, which is why this recipe for

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake is so perfect.

While you’re enjoying the juicy fruit inside as a snack, the outside skin can be zested and blended into a moist, rich and dense cake. Then, you’ll take a few wedges, juice them up and add that to powdered sugar for a zesty citrus drizzle over top of the cake.

I made one big mistake on my first go-around. I got a bit of the white pith under the outer skin in my zesting and it made my cake slightly bitter, so make sure that you grate only the pink peel.

You can drizzle as much or as little of the icing as you like. Just double the icing ingredients for more sweetness on top. The second mistake I made was cutting into the cake before it cooled and set up. Patience has never been my virtue, but in this case waiting a bit promises the perfect slices.

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter 1 small package (8 ounce) cream cheese 2 cups sugar 3 large eggs 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 heaping tablespoon grapefruit rind (pink skin only, no white pith) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup milk or cream 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Icing: 2 tablespoons grapefruit juice, strained 1 cups powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan or a 9-inch spring form round pan. In a mixing bowl combine butter, cream cheese and sugar. Beat on high until light and fluff y. Add eggs, one at a time, blending after each addition. Add oil, grapefruit rind, vanilla and milk or cream, mixing well. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add to wet April 15, 2015

mixture, just to combine. Pour into baking pan and cook for 1 hour or until toothpick comes up clean. Do not overbake. Let cake cool for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile make icing. In a medium bowl, combine grapefruit juice and powdered sugar, mixing well. If too thick, add more grapefruit juice, drops at a time. Transfer cooled cake to serving plate and drizzle with icing. Can be stored in refrigerator or at room temperature, wrapped well in plastic wrap, for several days.

‘Fancy Nancy’ stresses individualism

By Jessica McNabb Children will be taught to “march to the beat of their own drum” during the Saturday, May 2, performances of “Fancy Nancy: The Musical,” set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

In the show, Nancy fails to get the part she wants in a play. Instead, she is cast in a role that she thinks is dull and boring. Initially she is very upset, but then realizes that she can make her role “fancy” even if it isn’t the one she wanted.

“She’s a little 8-year-old girl who loves everything extraordinary and learns you can make anything you do fancy,” said Ally Young-Price, who plays Fancy Nancy.

The show, presented by The Vital Theatre Company, is an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling “Fancy Nancy” children’s books written

by Jane O’Connor and illustrated by

Robin Preiss Glasser.

The Vital Theatre Company performs family programming with the hopes of introducing children to the glories of live theater. The company created the full-length production, “Fancy Nancy: The Musical” in 2012.

“We are so excited to have all the ‘Fancy Nancy’ fans at the center for the first time,” said Cory Baker, director of Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “The ‘Fancy Nancy’ books have been around for a decade and are so beloved that we thought many families in the Valley would be interested in coming to see a musical adaptation.”

Sam Viverito, the show’s director, said the musical makes families want to dance along.

“It’s hard not to smile during some of the musical numbers. The music is bouncy, happy and high energy,” he said.

Illustrations from the books were used as inspiration for the sets and costumes in the musical adaptation of the “Fancy Nancy” series.

Viverito used many illustrations from the “Fancy Nancy” books as the inspiration for the set and costumes.

And he said the kids at the show arrive dressed fancy, too.

“You can tell they feel their best and are proud of what they are wearing,” Viverito said. “They are expressing themselves in the way they look. To me, it is adorable.”

In addition to the books, the “Fancy Nancy World” has many other prod-

ucts, including calendars, coloring sheets, games and online apps. Baker said some merchandise will be sold at the show.

Young-Price summed up the “Fancy Nancy” experience.

“The show has everything for everyone, not just little girls. Boys can be fancy too.”

PRGF treatment can also correct damaged facial skin. Choi had one patient who had been in a car accident and his face had burned badly. He had a prominent visible scar on his chin, which disappeared after the patient’s

two PRGF surgeries.

“We are excited about that,” Choi exclaimed.

Choi said he’s always been interested in cosmetics, boosting people’s confidence through the use of new technology.

“It’s very gratifying to me to see them look in the mirror afterward,” Choi said.
