Kyler Murray spent his day on March 24 attending two separate charity events and making contributions to give back to the local community.

The Arizona Cardinals star quarterback teamed up with Kretschmar, Albertsons and Safeway to supply $10,000 each to the Arizona Educational Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley.

At the first event, with the Arizona Educational Foundation, Murray hosted a brief trivia event where

winners received an autographed football. For them, the generous donation will go toward supporting the foundation’s mission of celebrating excellence and cultivating equity in pre-K to 12th grade education.

Four injured in shooting at Tanger Outlets

Four people were injured, including a child, after an argument led to a shooting on March 23 at Tanger Outlets.

Glendale police said one group was made up of a 17-year-old male, a 27-yearold female and a 4-year-old boy.

The others were 15- and 16-year-old males.

The 17-year-old male from the first group got into a disagreement with the 15-year-old male and 16-year-old male as he and his group were exiting a store.

The 17-year-old male was familiar with both the 15-year-old and 16-year-old males in the other group. The 17-year-old pulled out a handgun and began firing. The

15-year-old, who also was armed with a handgun, retired fire.

First responders transported the 17-yearold, the 27-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son to a local hospital with gunshot injuries. The 4-year-old’s condition was critical at the time of transport.

The two teens from the other group were dropped off at a local hospital in a dark-colored SUV. Everyone in the two groups except for the 16-year-old male were injured.

Glendale police were advised by detectives that the 4-year-old continues to remain in the hospital. The adult female and 15-year-old male were treated and released. The 17-year-old, who was determined to be the aggressor of the situation,

was also released.

He was charged as an adult on a $250,000 cash bond.

He faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, four counts of felony endangerment, misconduct involving weapons on separate counts of age and prior felony conviction, and criminal damage.

On March 23, officers responded to reports of gun shots around 2:40 p.m. When they arrived, they found multiple people had been injured, including the young child.

Glendale Police Department public information officer Tiffany Ngalula said the shooting was an isolated incident.

Shortly after the first event, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley hosted the second event, where Murray held a personal training session to demonstrate proper football techniques and skills.

Marcia Mintz, president and CEO for Boys & Girls Club of the Valley, said one of the most important things that a world-famous athlete or business leader can do is spend time with young people and show them what’s possible.

“Having one of their heroes, Kyler Murray, spend time and engage with club members shows them how important they are and what’s possible if they work hard toward their goals,” Mintz said. “Our club members experienced memories for a lifetime from their afternoon with Kyler Murray, and he will shape members’ thinking about their place in the world.”

Ngalula said the scene was classified as “chaotic.” It is believed that the quick, coordinated response by law enforcement, who began providing life-saving aid, helped prevent the loss of life.

“It is absolutely a coordinated effort,” she said at a press conference.

“We have other West Valley agencies out here; we also have the Department of Public Safety; we have several tactical units. That is just every agency out here working together to ensure the safety of everyone. They are going door to door, and they are ensuring that we have no further victims; they are making sure that everyone is safe and feels safe to come out.”

Detectives are still working to determine what led to the initial altercation between the juveniles.

Restaurateur receives Man of Courage Award

When Glendale restaurant owner Kelly Sample got into a car accident in 2008, he wasn’t expected to survive.

His recovery inspired him to change his life and to give back to others.

In January, during the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona’s Brainiac Bash, Sample was awarded the first Man of Courage Award.

The first Woman of Courage Award went to Kathy Laurinaitis, a business leader who is the mother of the Bella Twins wrestling team. In June 2020, she underwent surgery to have a mass removed from her brain stem.

The inaugural Outstanding Veteran Advocacy Award was given to Jonathan Hancock, a Marine veteran who was deployed to Iraq eight times with a battalion that faced heavy casualties and was the subject of the documentary “Bastards’ Road.” After his deployment, he dealt with PTSD issues and was suicidal, which led him to walk across the country to bring attention to the often silent experience of soldiers impacted by war.

Jeremy Roenick, a professional hockey player who sustained multiple concussions throughout his career, received the Courageous Athlete Award.

The Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona is a nonprofit organization that assists patients and families impacted by brain injuries through education, awareness, prevention and advocacy. It offers support groups, an annual conference, summer camps and educational classes.

This was the first time that the organization has honored people with brain injuries who have made an impact in their communities.

Along with awards, the recipients were given custom masks with designs specific to their experiences and lives.

Will Grove, resource facilitation specialist and certified brain injury specialist for the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona, said that by highlighting individuals who have survived and thrived, his organization hopes to inspire others who are recovering from brain injuries.

There’s a lot of work involved. It’s not easy,” Sample said.

Following his injury, he dealt with issues of self-confidence and guilt. He has often tried to downplay or keep quiet about his injury because he doesn’t want others to view him differently.

His family members, friends and co-workers helped him in his recovery with running his businesses and with getting to therapy.

His ex-wife assisted with accounting, and his sister and son stepped in to handle the restaurant’s marketing and website.

After outpatient rehab, Sample went through a work re-entry program, where he received assistance on setting up his office. He had to make some adaptations, such as installing voice dictation software.

He said this helped because a stroke had affected his ability to use his right hand.

“I was never a good typer. The brain injury really slowed it down. The voice dictation was huge. My emails went from cryptic responses of one to two sentences to volumes,” Sample said.

Sample said he has noticed a difference in how his brain processes information since his injury.

“It is difficult for me. I have to really focus on anything. Without the brain injury, you can do things effortlessly.

You have to really concentrate on what you want to do,” Sample said.

After going back to work, his role at his restaurants changed to be more on the operations side, handling behindthe-scenes jobs such as marketing for the restaurant.

In the past, he had done almost everything for his restaurant, including accounting and payroll. He said that he was on a dangerous path before his accident.

“My accident actually saved my life.

I was on an unsustainable path. I was working too much. I was eating too much,” Sample said. “The big takeaway for me was learning to delegate and then trust the people I was paying SEE AWARD PAGE 6

As Sample was going through recovery, the economy was facing a recession, which impacted his restaurants financially.

He at one time also had restaurants in Avondale and Peoria, but he lost the Avondale restaurant during the recession and closed the Peoria location about three years ago.

Cucina Tagliani is now his only restaurant.

The Italian restaurant is his first restaurant, which he opened in May 1993. It has been at the same site for nearly 30 years.

“I’m proud of that. Especially in the Valley, there’s not a lot of long-term restaurants,” Sample said.

At the restaurant, almost everything is made fresh and in-house, including the sauces, desserts, soups and dressings.

“You can tell by the smell. When it’s cooked fresh, you can tell the difference,” Sample said.

Like other restaurants, Cucina Tagliani has faced challenges over the years.

During the pandemic, it was shut down for six months and could only do takeout.

Sample said in the restaurant business, it is important to be open to and willing to change.

“That’s the nature of the restaurant business. You are always adapting.

You have to be able to make decisions on the fly and hope they will be right,” Sample said.

Sample has a long history of working at restaurants, dating back to 1979. He has worked in different types of restaurants as a bartender, busboy, afternoon DJ, doorman and manager.

He still tries to take an active role at his restaurant, even though his role has changed since his injury.

“Forty-one years later, I’m still bussing tables. I haven’t really advanced as much as I thought,” Sample joked.

Following his injury, Sample felt a strong need to give back to others by working with organizations such as the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona.

Around 2010, Sample first got involved with the organization, which helped him to connect with the brain

injury community and support groups and provided resources and referrals.

He has taken part in different fundraisers benefiting the organization, including a bowling fundraiser called Bowl-for-Brain.

He has also hosted and catered parties for members of brain injury support groups and has hired brain-injury survivors to work for him.

“We’ve hired people on a part-time basis to help them get back to work.

They have all gone on to bigger and better things,” Sample said.

Sample said that for him, it is important to give back to the community that showed so much support to him.

“My saying is, ‘I’m definitely playing in extra innings.’ I’m not sure why I’m still here. If it’s just to help people by selling spaghetti and donating part of the proceeds, maybe that’s why I’m still here,” Sample said.

ESPN devolving as veer to the left continues

ESPN is headed for a reckoning.

Sadly, that once pioneering enterprise has engaged in self-sabotage, alienating a large portion of its once faithful audience by its recurring insistence on advocating a leftist political agenda.

The Entertainment and Sports Programming Network premiered Sept.

7,1979. Those early years featured programming that was more novelty than nirvana. Australian rules football, slow pitch softball, and tractor pulls supplied much of the show inventory.

Yet ESPN’s signature program, SportsCenter, has been a mainstay from day one. It was the catalyst for the incredible increase in audience ratings, the understandable rise in advertising dollars and the inevitable attraction for acquisition.

In 1984, ABC purchased ESPN. ABC, in turn, was acquired by Capital Cities Communications the following year. Then, in 1996, Capital Cities/ABC was bought by The Walt Disney Company.

By that time, there was nothing

“Mickey Mouse” about the sports channel.

The Mouse House execs gained great appreciation — and a whole lot of money — from the way the cable channel accrued revenue. In 1997, ESPN earned 65 cents of every dollar from cable subscription fees and the remaining 35 cents from advertising. ABC Sports, once “recognized around the world as the leader in sports television,” morphed into a memory. By September 2006, sports events airing on that network were rebranded “ESPN on ABC.” Major American institutions started rethinking how they might take advantage of “opportunities” with ESPN — especially the White House. In 1998, President Bill Clinton was trying to move past the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He directed his staff to offer the sports channel a chance to televise a special with him as host and moderator of a panel discussion on race relations.

Of course, the White House predicated the offer on the condition that Clinton would not be asked about his intimate relations with Miss Lewinsky.

ESPN readily agreed.

With that “presidential precedent” established, another chief executive made effective use of his “political Jackie Robinson” status to enjoy an even closer relationship with ESPN. Barack Obama used his interest in basketball to establish a yearly ESPN event. The onetime “community organizer” would spend quite a bit of time organizing his brackets for “March Madness.” There certainly was a method to the madness as ESPN gained recurring access to the Oval Office and Obama gained a new image as a “regular guy.”

The regularity of ESPN’s rapport with Democrat administrations went to a record extreme last spring. Joe Biden used an interview appearance on opening day of the MLB season to open a line of attack on Georgia’s election reform legislation. “Jim Crow 2.0,” Biden called it. The cable channel led the “Amen Chorus,” essentially aiding Biden in the successful effort to pull the All-Star Game out of Atlanta.

The political madness returned with a vengeance to ESPN this March as basketball took a backseat to more on-air advocacy with a strain more political — and less factual — than before.

During round 1 coverage of the Women’s NCAA Tournament, studio anchor Elle Duncan tried to dunk on Florida’s “Parental Rights in Education” legislation, which prohibits “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity” to students in kindergarten through the third grade.

“We understand the gravity of this legislation,” Duncan intoned, proving that she understands nothing about it at all.

Not to be outdone, the play-by-play team covering the opening game sermonized before going for silent for the opening two minutes of the third quarter. Announcer Courtney Lyle said colleagues “are hurting right now.” Analyst Carolyn Peck added “a threat to any human rights is a threat to all human rights,” conveniently omitting parental rights.

Look for more alienated viewers to exercise their rights and change the channel, as ESPN now stands for “Expect Sports Politicized Nonstop.”

How would that work, you ask? Fillmore’s bill would require all state, county, city and town elections to be conducted using only paper ballots. And for all results to be counted by hand.

Because, you know, machines are bad.

The bill would also ban voting by mail — which has existed in Arizona since 1991 — and instead require virtually all Arizona voters to go to

the polls in person to cast paper ballots. Because, as we all know, waiting in line was America’s favorite hobby circa 1958.

Fillmore’s bill also mandates that all voting and hand-counting of ballots must be completed “within 24 hours of the polls closing.” Because human beings in the state’s 15 counties should be able to accurately and efficiently count to 3,420,565 — the number of votes cast in Arizona’s still-contested 2020 election — in a day.

1958, of course, being the peak of human efficiency as we know it.

Fillmore’s bill was killed early in the session by House Speaker Rusty Bowers, a Mesa Republican who assigned the bill to a dozen committees for hearings — a move Fillmore called a “12-committee lynching.” The measure resurfaced March 21 in the Senate Government committee, where it passed on 4-3 party line vote.

While I don’t see this one becoming law, that’s not really what interests me.

I’m far more fascinated by Fillmore himself, whose campaign website — not very 1958 of you, sir — touts his

As we head toward April and the Arizona legislative session winds down, the fierce competition for the dumbest idea yet appears to be over. This year’s honors go to Apache Junction Rep. John Fillmore for his tireless efforts to destroy the state’s voting system with his masterpiece, now known as House Bill 2289.

experience as “a veteran, a businessman, and an entrepreneur.” Fillmore’s 2021 election filings list him as the president of a Mesa business called the Weather Shack. This, too, surprises me.

See, I had pictured Fillmore living more of a 1958 lifestyle — or, hell, maybe more like 1858. He and the wife gathered around the kitchen table most nights, reading the Constitution by candlelight, or enjoying a sweltering Arizona evening minus air conditioning. Wouldn’t you know it, though, Fillmore’s business sells fancy gas and electric fireplaces and state-of-the-art home cooling systems!

What kind of guy trusts machines to govern the temperature of his home when a nice pile of logs or some natural Arizona sunshine will do just fine?

That’s an Arizona legislator for you: living in comfort while doing his or her best to drag the state back into the 20th century. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, our 90 elected representatives have dropped 147 different bills remodeling

elections laws so far in 2022, touching on everything from which forms of identification will be allowed at the polls to how and when election recounts will be mandatory.

At the root of most of these bills rests two things: a certainty that the 2020 election was fraudulent and stolen from Donald Trump — an accusation that has never been proven, even after multiple audits — and a supreme mistrust of technology.

As a guy who deposits checks by accessing the bank online, makes daily purchases on the web, files his taxes on IRS.gov and who even believes his digital bathroom scale — much to my chagrin — I don’t want to go back to 1958, especially on Election Day. Counting is one of the rare things the government does pretty well. I say leave the election process alone, instead of acting like Rep. Fillmore and creating solutions in search of a problem.

Local restaurants respond to Spring Training revival

Major League Baseball hosted events during its 2021 season that created some much-needed excitement surrounding the sport.

Neutral-site games at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and the Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa, drove viewership.

In addition, 2021’s postseason galvanized fans of the game and saw a franchise in the Atlanta Braves win its first World Series title.

Coming off a shortened 2020 season that saw games played without fans due to COVID-19, it was exactly what the game needed.

What immediately followed was borderline catastrophic for the game: The league locked out its players. The two sides would need to come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement before games — regular season or Spring Training — would be played.

That lockout ended one day shy of hitting the century mark. After an extensive amount of back and forth between the two sides, the owners and players, seemingly at the death, agreed on a new CBA. Though the season was recovered, and players began immediately reporting to Spring Training camps, the number of Spring Training games that would be played was essentially cut in half because the two sides could not reach an agreement quickly enough.

Many local restaurants near Cactus League facilities were left wondering how big an impact this year’s edition of Spring Training would have on their restaurants.

“Is it going to make a difference?

Are people still coming? It’s a little last minute to make any changes,” said Ian Harwell, owner and operator of Ground Control.

He said Spring Training brings a lot of customers to his restaurant, making

the time period his busiest of the year.

He’s worried that there is not a lot of time left for people to make plans to come out.

Ground Control sits a little over four miles away from Camelback Ranch, the facility that hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox. It roasts its own coffee beans, specializes in wood-fired pizza, and offers many local beers on tap.

“We’re a locally owned small business,” Harwell said. “We make everything in-house. Everything is hand-crafted, from our cocktails to our food, and we make our sauces and dough daily. Everything that we do, we make in-house.”

Harwell said his restaurant is noticeably busier during a normal Spring Training season. Though the amount of clientele from this year’s Spring Training is up in the air, Ground Control will be ready if it gets busy.

“We always have to keep up with that and plan for an influx of customers if they do come,” said Stephanie, market-

ing director and Harwell’s wife.

Opa Life, another restaurant that attracts guests attending Spring Training games at Camelback Ranch, specializes in Greek cuisine. It operates just under 3 miles from the facility.

“We have people from Los Angeles that have been coming here for years to watch the (Los Angeles) Dodgers for Spring Training and look forward to coming out to Opa,” said Alan Krier, managing member and operator. “They know me, and they know the restaurant and the food. It was good to see them start coming back this week.”

When games were canceled by the league, Krier wasn’t exactly surprised.

He said he followed the back and forth very closely and predicted the two sides not being able to come to terms in time for a full Spring Training season to commence.

“I had already planned on, in my head, not having games about four or five months ago because I follow baseball very closely and saw where things were going,” Krier said. “I didn’t think

they were going to be able to work it out. I wasn’t totally shocked, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t disappointed.”

Opa Life receives a substantial bump in clientele when Spring Training games are going on, so Krier was elated when an agreement made it so games would still be played, despite it being fewer than usual.

“It has a really strong impact,” he said. “I was really glad that it came together at the last second. It seemed like it was not going to happen at all, and all of the sudden Major League Baseball made a deal. We were really happy. It makes it a lot more steady during some slower hours of operation.”

According to Krier, the impact of games being revived was almost immediate. The restaurant was getting business from Spring Training within an hour of an agreement being made.

“There were already people in town when games got canceled because they had already booked their vacations,” he said.

Camelback Ranch is not the only facility offering many nearby restaurant options.

The Peoria Sports Complex, host to the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, lies in an area that offers a surplus of neighboring restaurants. The Angry Crab Shack is one of those; it is just 3 1/2 miles away from the facility.

“We have it on lock at Peoria,” general manager Tim Dernick said. “We know that Spring Training every year is a great time to pull people in and keep them coming back.”

Dernick admits there is still a lot up in the air. He’s unsure if his restaurant will see the influx and numbers it normally gets from Spring Training due to the initial cancellation of games. “(Games being canceled) was disheartening,” he said. “We were definitely keeping an eye on it and hoping that something would come to grips.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, the reality of the situation was that it looked like it wasn’t going to happen.”

With the way things are currently trending, Dernick believes his store will see a boost. He said Angry Crab Shack is ready for it. His restaurant is noticeably busier during Spring Training, so he is just grateful to be getting anything at all.

“I’m glad they’ve got that going on and they’re giving us a little bit of that this year,” he said. “I know the company itself takes it very seriously. We look forward to it, and we know that not only does it bring in an uptick in sales and foot traffic but we get different people from different areas that have never experienced the type of restaurant we are.

“It really gives us an opportunity to show what we do by providing a level of service and hospitality that could spread by word of mouth, not only in Arizona but states all over the country, because we bring people in from all over during Spring Training.”

Arizona Coyotes ink Jack McBain to 2-year deal

The NHL’s trade deadline came and went, and the Arizona Coyotes were active.

Among a flurry of moves, the team traded for center Jack McBain from the Minnesota Wild for a 2022 second-round pick. McBain was originally drafted by the Wild in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

The Coyotes held a press conference March 23 to announce the acquisition and signing of the contract.

“Today is a proud day for our organization to sign Jack McBain to a two-year deal,” general manager Bill Armstrong said. “We had to out-recruit the majority of NHL teams to persuade

Jack, his family, his agent that we were the right organization for him.”

Armstrong has been watching McBain’s progression as a player and person since he was 16 years old. He believes the young center is the perfect fit for the Coyotes organization.

“The way that he plays is perfect for what we need as an organization,” Armstrong said. “He’s a power forward that can play a skilled role. He can jump in and can finish around the net.”

McBain has certainly kept himself busy over the last year. He opted to go back to school and play his senior season for Boston College and got the opportunity to represent Team Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The Olympics, he said, gave him a

real opportunity to prove that his skill set would make the leap to the next level. He learned a lot during his time in Beijing.

“It was a great opportunity,” McBain said. “I mean, obviously a lot of ex-NHL players and guys that have already been at the level that I’ve been striving to get to, so being able to pick the brains of some of the guys in the locker room was pretty cool. It was just an all-around unique experience, and I’m glad I got to do it.”

Summer Kids Camp Preview

Arizona summer tradition lives on in Prescott

Every May, an Arizona tradition continues. Children roll sleeping bags, pack duffel bags, and make their way to Friendly Pines Camp in Prescott.

Located in the cool pine forest of the Bradshaw Mountains, Friendly Pines Camp fills the summer with activities.

Founded in 1941 by Bud and Isabelle Brown and accredited through the American Camp Association, Friendly Pines Camp is the longest-running family-owned summer camp in Arizona.

Designed for ages 6 to 14, this coed sleepaway camp offers more than 30 traditional camp activities, including horseback riding, swimming, ball sports, rock climbing, performing arts, fine arts, pet care, fencing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, dancing and sewing.

The camp offers one-, two-, four- and six-week sessions.

“We’re now seeing a fourth generation of campers,” said Megan May, the camp’s director, who is the great-grand-

daughter of the camp’s founders.

“Many of our former campers, who are now the parents and grandparents of current campers, tell us that they love the fact that we’re still teaching the same classic camp songs and square dances, still cooking Dutch oven biscuits over a campfire, and offering many of the same outdoor sports, activities and camp traditions that they remember doing.”

Friendly Pines Camp is also a place where boys and girls are required to make their own beds every morning and are assigned individual chores to help keep their cabins clean.

Children quickly learn how to share a small, cozy cabin with one bathroom and shower with new kids from around the world.

Parents should know that while many of the camp’s activities and traditions have remained the same over 81 years, all the main buildings and cabins have been remodeled and upgraded. Plus, while many of the same classic camp foods continue to be served, the kitchen

staff accommodates children who are vegan, gluten free and lactose intolerant.

“Our daughter has been going to Friendly Pines for four years now, and we have also attended family camp,” said Allison Frumker of Chandler.

“There is so much thought and energy put into every single detail, from registration to pre-camp checklists, activities, food, safety, communications, the entire experience. … As soon as camp is done for the summer, our daughter is already planning for next year.”

Friendly Pines Camp is also looking for counselors, and it has the highest staff salary of any Arizona summer camp. Their camp counselor pay breaks down to $17 per hour, $697 per week, and $6,274 for nine weeks of employment. That includes room and board plus three meals a day.

“Not only will a job at camp keep you gainfully employed, but it will also enrich your life in a variety of ways,” May added. “Camp counselors have the op-

The 32nd annual running of the Bell Lexus North Scottsdale Copperstate 1000 returns to Arizona on Sunday, April 3.

One of North America’s premier vintage car road rallies, Copperstate 1000 celebrates the automotive cultural legacy by featuring some of the finest working examples of vintage, sports, racing, classic and grand touring automobiles manufactured before the 1974 model year.

“The Men’s Arts Council created this event back in 1990 as a fundraiser for Phoenix Art Museum and the event continues to set the benchmark for excellence,” said Joel Coen, incoming Men’s Arts Council president.

“Our members, event participants and even the public are ecstatic to have this iconic event return post-pandemic.”

Notable cars will participate in the Copperstate 1000 this year, including a 1952 Cunningham C2 Lemans race car. The Cunningham C2, later referred to as the C2r, was Briggs Cunningham’s first serious assault on an outright win in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

Success was mixed.

Of the three cars entered, only one finished in 1951. The car ran as high as second for much of the race, being clocked at 154 mph on the Mulsanne, yet it finished a disappointing 18th after being slowed by mechanical issues late in the race.

Another must see is the 1953 Studebaker Commander. It was the brainchild of noted automotive designer Raymond Loewy. The iconic low-slung design has an aerodynamic profile, which has made it a favorite of road racers for 70 years. This Starlight Coupe underwent a frame-off conversion from a stock model in 2012 and subsequently was campaigned five times in Mexico on the La Carrera Panamericana and the Chihuahua Express.

During the conversion the chassis and suspension were tuned for endurance road racing and a custom 302 race motor, Tremec five speed, Wilwood disc brakes, quick change rear gears, fuel cell, roll cage and fire suppression system were installed.

Making real-life transformational encounters Last week, we started a two-part series on the difference between a transaction and a transformation. Author Laurie Beth, in her book “Teach Your Team to Fish,” says the following about this subject.

“Transactions are lateral exchanges between people — be it goods or services. I give you this in exchange for that. Transactions are obvious and lateral, commonplace, and easy to spot.

In contrast, transformations are invisible, uplifting, transcendent experiences that involve a fundamental shift or change. Transactions are necessary but not necessarily transformational.”

My definition of a transformation is a transaction that, when completed, one of the parties walks away four stories higher than when they entered the transaction.

Allow me to share two real-life examples of transformational encounters. The first example is from a pastor friend of mine here in Phoenix, Mark Buckley. He recently wrote about this transformational experience which happened years ago.

“I was privileged to host radio programs for 30 years and TV programs for 10 years in California and Arizona.

I hosted guests that included pastors, authors, athletes, business leaders and politicians. Many of them were well known and had engaging personalities.

However, as I think back on those interviews, one of them stands out more than the others.

“Gary Bender was a sports broadcaster who did radio and TV play-byplay for baseball, football and basketball on Fox, CBS, ABC and TNT. I had never heard of Gary when he arrived at our radio studio for our program. As we faced each other across the studio desk, Gary began to ask me questions about my background and our church.

He was interested in me and our ministry. He continued to ask me questions when we were on the air. In thirty

years of interviews, nobody else ever showed interest in me that way.

“Gary was used to being on nationwide television. Our program was on KXEG, a Christian radio station in Phoenix. Gary didn’t need the exposure, he wasn’t promoting anything, but he treated our time together like it was genuinely important. He didn’t make an impression on me because of his insights, eloquence or stature. Our encounter was significant because he understood the impact caring could have on another person.

“The best way to have other people care about you is for you to care about them. We can make a powerful impression on others when they realize we are genuinely interested in them. The secret sauce of building strong relationships is contained in the command of Jesus, ‘Love one another, as I have loved you.’ (John 15:12). As he draws us, he drew them into a relationship he initiated with his love.”

Here is transformational analysis about this example. All humans have questions about their humanity. “Am I valued?” “Am I loved?” “Do I matter?” “Do you like me?” “Can you help me?” “Will you add value to my life?”

“Can I trust you?” Gary Bender met a felt need in Pastor Mark and that same need is in all of us.

When I read Mark’s account of Gary Bender, it didn’t surprise me. I met Gary a few months ago at a unity meeting, and he engaged me the same way he did with Mark. So evidentially, everybody is somebody to Gary. Trust me, valuing others will be uphill all the way, but well worth it.

Next, let’s explore a perfect example of a company that promises transformation but delivers a transaction. Sound familiar? Laurie Beth Jones explains.

“I sat recently with one of the vice presidents of a multimillion-dollar resort hotel. We discussed the challenges facing this entity, which had come to a foreign country and hired 5,000 people on the island before they had opened the doors. Despite spending nearly $1 billion on developing the resort, the owners were now facing multiple complaints from hostile and influential customers who had come to what was billed as a five-star resort and were experiencing one-star service instead.

“I read the mission statement, which was vague and uninspiring. However, I felt there was hope because one of their core intentions was to ‘blow the customer away.’ As we continued to talk, the frustrated vice president sighed and said, ‘We want everyone to have a five-star experience. I guess we must clearly define what that experience looks like.’

“As we finished our lunch, we ordered espresso for dessert. The waitress returned after a few moments and said, ‘I’m sorry, but there is no espresso available today. Our machine is broken.’

“Having just walked past a functioning espresso machine in the coffee bar upstairs, I smiled and asked, ‘Could you maybe get some from upstairs?’

She said, ‘I hadn’t thought of that.’

Within minutes, she returned with two perfect cups of espresso, delivered from less than 20 yards away.

“The vice president sighed as she stirred her coffee. ‘See what I mean?’ she said. ‘We have a long way to go in training our staff.’”

This espresso crisis was a perfect example of the difference between training someone in dealing with transactions versus transformation. This waitress clearly felt her job was to deliver items ordered from the menu. If the items were unavailable, the transaction was still complete. The customers either got what they wanted, or they didn’t. She had still done her job.

“If, however, the waitress had understood that her job was to ‘blow the customer away’ with unparalleled service, she would have taken the initiative to know all the resources at her disposal.

Then she would have moved heaven and earth to deliver not merely a cup of coffee, but a transformed customer.”

Aha! I would say the extra mile is a vast unpopulated wasteland, wouldn’t you?

So, my transformational analysis for us about this example is we need to be intentional in valuing people. Ask yourself, “How will what I do right now add value to others?”

The truth is God values me. God values you. God values people you don’t know. God values people you don’t like. So don’t be like the person who says, “There are 7 billion people on earth, and I like six of you.”

KIWANIS CLUB OF GLENDALE STUDENT OF THE MONTH HONORED AT THE GESD GOVERNING BOARD MEETING Monthly student recognition program honors student leaders who lift up their schools and communities.

The March student of the month is Jordyn Donahue, a 6thgrade student from Bicentennial North School. In addition to being an outstanding Honors student, Jordyn recognized that his school was in need of extracurricular educational activities for students. He generated ideas of what the school needed, then sought out students to help with his cause. Jordyn and the other students met with teachers and administrators to develop and implement four new student clubs at Bicentennial North including Gaming, International Athletics, Monday Funday, and Culture Club.

Jordyn also served on the Youth Leadership Council and was interviewed by Touchstone Health Services as part of a video recording that was showcased at the Youth Leadership Conference in February 2022.

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale sponsors the GESD Student of the Month Award. Students are chosen by Superintendent Segotta-Jones for their servant leadership.

We are so proud of Jordyn and thankful for the support of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale. If you would like to learn more about Kiwanis, the club meets every Wednesday at noon at Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant at 5670 W. Peoria Ave., Glendale AZ 85302.
