Goodyear Civic Square (GSQ), is the future walkable downtown of Goodyear.
Despite its full glory yet to be seen, it has already been recognized in a big way, as it was named the 2023 Real Estate Development Awards winner for the Recreation or Public Works Project of the Year.
With the project already drawing tons of attention from retailers and residents alike, GSQ has become a splash hit before the first brick has even been set.
“For us, it certainly is an honor to be selected for the Recreation or Public Works Project of the Year,” Goodyear Vice Mayor Laura Kaino said. “We’re so proud of this project, but to have it be recognized by industry leaders is very exciting. This collaboration with George Getz with Globe Corporation and the city, taking the next step to fully develop GSQ. What a great way to kick this all off,
not only is our project outstanding but it’s now award winning as well.”
The RED Awards are considered by many to be the “Academy Awards” for Arizona’s commercial real estate industry and give awards to outstanding work

Millennium students create shoes for charity in group project
BY JOE MCHUGH West Valley View Staff Writer
Remembering back to the time of high school, there were many things that were a part of the curriculum that could be considered a bore.
Math, tests and taxing work were some of the things that could deflate the motivation to learn and make the days feel long.
But at Millennium High School, English teacher Amie Gilbert is spicing things up. For the next two to three weeks, she and her two sophomore classes will be immersed in an experience like no other in the Valley.
The students will design their own shoes from scratch, researching their ideas and selling them to donate to a charity of their choosing to help make a positive impact in the community and revitalize their “learning spirits” to close out the school year.
“The shoe (design project) is more of what’s going to grab their attention,” Gilbert said. “But all of the research skills, the communication skills, the writing skills, that’s why we’re doing it in our English class.”
The project has been teased to the class for the entirety of the year, leaving a sense of mystery as to when it would
actually happen, but the time has now come for the students to execute on their plans of a real-world application of skills.
The process is thorough, teaming up and creating a concept for a shoe that they think would sell well, pitching it to their classmates on their plans of creation and distribution, and then fulfilling that pitch and coming out with profit that will then be transferred to a charity, therefore helping their community in the end.
“What they’re learning through all

Coming to fruition rather “suddenly,” the ideas of GSQ were presented to city council and were quickly approved.
“We loved it,” Kaino said. “Because there was so much time and effort put into developing what we wanted it to look like, we wanted something timeless and classic but yet modern. We wanted something that would just look fresh and good over the years as a city hall for now and for the future.”
With the initial conception of the project taking place back in 2019, the public and private partnership coalesced perfectly, getting the plans finished “on time and on budget as of August 2022.”
“We knew it was going to be special,” Kaino said. “I think it even exceeded our expectations once we saw it and began to move in and be in this space. It’s outstanding.”
Goodyear has been tapping into
its 88% open space as of late, developing and building out the city in a thoughtful and concise way. The city is taking its time, though, as it still wants to keep the “small-town feel” that residents have come to know and love.
“It’s important to us to try to keep that as we are a growing city, we’ve been growing so quickly,” Kaino said. “But by creating this type of structure here that welcomes the public to come in and do business with the city, it also invites the public to come in and use the outdoor space.”
The end goal of GSQ is to bring the amenities that are often found in East Valley cities out to the West Valley. With hopes of getting name brand vendors and retailers out to Goodyear, residents won’t have to make long drives for their favorite stores.
“What is envisioned for the future at GSQ will far exceed an old model of a mall and is going to be new and innovative,” Kaino said. “It will be a point
of pride for our residents who ended up telling us for a long time, ‘We don’t want to have to drive to Scottsdale or Phoenix to have dining experiences and shopping experiences. We want to be able to do that here.’”
Just two or three years away from a fully functional GSQ, retailers are pouring in to try to be a part of it. Goodyear has been a prime spot for these retailers, like BJ’s Brewhouse, which has reported that its Goodyear location has been its most profitable and popular restaurant in its Arizona chain.
Kaino remains optimistic that more companies and sellers will start to make their way out to the West Valley to further bolster the roster in the award-winning downtown.
“We’re very excited about what is to come and what it’s going to mean for Goodyear as well as for the West Valley,” Kaino said. “I just can’t help but say that Goodyear is going to become a destination. We’re very excited about that.”

this is, one, research because they have to show that they understand research skills,” Gilbert said. “They can’t just pick something without doing research on that charity. They also will have to speak on the phone with another human being about what they are doing and send professional emails.
“These are real life skills that they have to know that can translate outside of high school.”
The project comes after reading the novel “Night” by Ellie Wiesel, a memoir about the Holocaust that depicts the tough circumstances that the communities in Germany had to face in the mid- to late-1940s.
Gilbert understands that “it is a difficult novel for a 16-year-old to read” and rather decided to find some positives out of having to study the text.
“We talked a lot about communi-
ties and the importance of community and how to make a difference within your community,” Gilbert said. “So, we were kind of focusing on the positive side.”
Gilbert, formerly a teacher at Verrado High School, wanted to implement project-based learning to her new students at Millennium as a way to get them pumped up to learn and be attentive in class. They will be applying skills that they can use long after they are done with school and, when it is done in a fun and interactive way, it is the perfect learning tool.
“They’re pretty revved up about it, which is exciting for me as a teacher,” Gilbert said. “They’re actually excited about what we’re doing in class, genuinely. They’re genuinely excited, and that reinvigorates me, too. I get something out of that, too. I get to see their excitement and passion.”
After a long school year, it might be
difficult to find the passion to learn and finish off the school year, but the shoe project has already done that. It will be beneficial to the community, Gilbert and the students themselves as they power through their learning journeys through the creativity of designing shoes.
“Sometimes they struggle to find a connection with what you’re doing in class, even if that’s part of your lesson or part of a unit is making that connection,” Gilbert said. “So seeing them make a connection, or seeing them find passion in what you’re doing, it just makes my job better all the way around.”
To see the students’ shoe designs, visit http://app.memberhub.gives/mhs from April 14 to April 28 (the site is not active until the opening date), or text “soles” to 919-626-3277 to access the page. All proceeds will go to charity.

Gary Hinton crossed the 56-mile mark at the finish line, joining hundreds of other cyclists pedaling furiously toward a goal that extended beyond the end of the bike race — raising money to treat and eventually cure diabetes.
As sweat poured down his face, a smiling Hinton explained why he biked for the annual fundraiser, known as Tour de Cure.
“I’m not a research chemist, I can’t sit at home and figure out how this works, but you know what? I can fundraise, and I can do my part this way,” said Hinton, who rode to represent family and friends with diabetes. “It does take resources to find any source of quality care, or a cure. It’s not going to happen just because someone snaps their fingers.”
Nearly 650 cyclists on March 18 rode 5.6 miles, 23 miles or 56 miles on a loop that began and ended at Goodyear
Ballpark, said Nichole Brown, associate director of development for the Arizona and New Mexico office of the American Diabetes Association. They raised nearly $585,000 to battle diabetes, according to the association website.
Diabetes, characterized by elevated blood-sugar levels, can lead to damage to the heart and other organs and tissue. The two most common forms are Type 1, caused by a genetic mutation, and the more prevalent Type 2. Weight and activity levels can lead to problems, but family history, age and race also play a role, experts say. More than 1 in 10 Americans are affected by diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
People of color, particularly in the American Indian, Alaska Native, Black, Hispanic and Asian American communities, are more commonly diagnosed with diabetes. People who have lower income and lower levels of education are also at a higher risk of being diagnosed with diabetes, the CDC says.
“When you think about barriers to care, affordability is a barrier,” said Terri Wiggins, senior vice president for health equity for the national diabetes association. “If I have to decide whether I’m going to pay my rent or take my medicine, that’s a terrible decision to have to make.”
Lifesaving insulin for years has come with a hefty price tag. In late 2022, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which capped insulin prices at $35 a month for Medicare recipients. Eli Lilly, one of the top providers

Abrazo hospitals recognize National Doctors’ Day
BY KEITH JONES West Valley View Contributing Writer
Abrazo Health is celebrating National Doctors’ Day by paying tribute to its physicians for their service, skill and compassion.
Across the Abrazo network of hospitals, emergency centers and physician practices, the theme of, “Thank you for your commitment to heal” depicts a collective sentiment of deep appreciation for the outstanding group of physicians who tirelessly care for our community.
“On behalf of all our employees and patients, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our physicians,” Abrazo Health Chief Executive Officer Brian Elisco said. “I believe strongly in the value of saying thank you every day, but as we celebrate Doctors’ Day on March 30, we pause to honor the contributions of our physicians for their dedication to the health of our community.”
Abrazo recognizes its physicians for being the pillars of the high quality, distinctive services provided to Valley residents. Over the last year, this has included accomplishments such as supporting expansion of our cardiovascular, spine and neonatal services; performing lifesaving care for stroke, cardiovascular disease and traumatic and emergent events; and improving lives through ortho-

of the drug, announced March 1 that it has capped all patients’ monthly outof-pocket cost at $35.
The Goodyear event centered around families and healthy living — from the bike ride to showcase the importance of exercise to a booth where people could pick up free, fresh fruits and vegetables.
As kids jumped around in a bouncy castle, families could eat snacks and drink beer and other beverages.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizo-
pedic surgery and bariatric weight loss programs, to name a few.
Celebrated on March 30 each year, Doctors’ Day was officially established in 1991. March 30 also marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842. National Doctors’ Day is commonly celebrated in health care organizations as a day to recognize the contributions of doctors to individual lives and communities.
Abrazo Health is one of the largest health systems in Arizona, serving the greater Phoenix area with advanced programs in cardiovascular, neurosciences, orthopedics, spine and sports medicine, trauma and emergency services, surgical robotics, general surgery and maternity care.
The Abrazo system includes Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, Abrazo Central Campus, Abrazo Cave Creek Hospital, Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, Abrazo Surprise Hospital and Abrazo West Campus — along with freestanding emergency centers, primary care and specialty physician practices and graduate medical education programs.

na also recognized the diabetes association’s efforts to create a fun and informative event by setting up an area for event attendees to speak to the health insurer’s team about the importance of finding affordable health care.
Eric Marcus, an administrator for the insurer for the company and a Type 1 diabetic, rode in the bike race.
“It creates awareness, it creates education, and it brings people together for an important cause,” he said.

Avondale KidFest returns to Friendship Park
BY JOE MCHUGH West Valley View Staff Writer
On Saturday, April 8, the city of Avondale is hosting the Avondale KidFest at Friendship Park to cap off the Week of the Young Child.
A week dedicated to the education of children and families, the event will honor the next generations with ample activities, games, prizes, shows and fun after a long week of learning.
“The party is a celebration of being educated this whole week about everything for learning opportunities and programs and all of that for kids and families,” Avondale Recreation Coordinator for Special Events Kelsey English said.
The free-to-attend event, presented by APS, is packed with things for families and children to do, both from an educational standpoint as well as a fun environment for kids to
have a good time.
Headlined by the Put on the Cape 5K Run that will benefit the South-
west Family Advocacy Center, there will be activities such as live entertainment, bungee trampolines, a rock wall and even a giant foam pit for children to do as they please for the day and enjoy their youth, and something that English resonates with when she reminisces on her childhood.
“I grew up in one of those families that went to our community events,” she said. “I have great family memories of going to my local park and playing in tee ball leagues and things like that. But creating this one-time, special opportunity in such a huge celebration, it means the world to me now to be able to attend those things as a kid, but now, being able to put that on for my community as an adult.”
During the week, the National Association for the Education of Young Children teaches families where to go and what to do in the city, putting an emphasis on public attention for the needs of young children. The organization’s goal is to help families and caretakers alike to recognize early childhood programs and services that may help in their children’s lives.
The Avondale city leadership has also been a driving factor in making
this week even more emphasized, as Mayor Kenneth Weise delivered a proclamation that the week of April 1 through April 7 is the 2023 Week of the Child in Avondale.
“We are one department, but we are not one department alone,” English said. “(The Avondale Police Department is) right there behind us bringing all their vehicles and offering fingerprinting for kids. The fire department is there for kids to see a fire truck and learn how it works. Public Works is there, they bring out a street sweeper, but you can see in person they bring out a garbage truck.
“These are the kinds of people you’re going to have to interact with. Those kinds of things that you may not think of from the city side exist as departments.”
The group effort to put on this event, though, stems from a large pool of sponsors. With names like Avondale Toyota and Avondale Discover, people are piling up to be a part of this beneficial event.
“We couldn’t offer these things and these fun opportunities without these partners that come in and see these events that we’re offering,” English said. “To want to be a part of it all the way down from our sponsors who do contribute funds, to make sure that all these activities are free, that nobody is coming to these events and having to pay for the littlest thing.”
All in all this event is based around the kids and making it the most fun for them, while educating others how to keep that youthful smile on their face for as long as possible.
“Whatever you are seeking for your family and your kids, it is there,” English said.

Indicting Trump would inflame a tinderbox
BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ West Valley View Columnist
ith stories, there’s how you wish they’ll play out and how it goes. Nowhere is this truer than with the long, painful tale of President Donald Trump and the possibility of his arrest and trial.
A quote from another time comes to mind: From Gerald Ford, our 38th president, the Michigan Republican who inherited the office after the resignation of Richard Nixon. Watergate pushed the nation to an abyss. Ford’s inaugural speech was beamed live from the East Room in August 1974.
“My fellow Americans,” the new president said, “our long national nightmare is over.”
The late Wolverines football lineman never could have imagined where we are today.
How would I like the Trump story to go?
I’d like the Democrat District Attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg,
Wto use his prosecutorial discretion to punt on the case — not because I believe Trump’s egomaniacal, absurd denials but because prosecuting such a case will further inflame a country that’s already like dry kindling awaiting a match.
Is anyone above the law? No, not even a former POTUS.
But for all Trump’s lies and bloviation — counterbalanced by some of the results of his presidency, which I appreciated — I don’t relish the idea of old 45 in court for a trial focused on $130,000 his scummy lawyer wired to a porn star in 2016 so she wouldn’t discuss an adulterous sex romp from 2006.
Did the payment and its timing violate campaign finance law? Maybe.
Was the repayment hidden in Trump’s business records in some felonious manner, to be written off as legal expenses? Probably.
But in the end, Bragg’s case is too esoteric, a yawner, the political equivalent of getting Al Capone on tax evasion. Except Scarface didn’t have millions of followers on social
media and hundreds of thousands of supporters ready to riot in the streets.
My Republican friends will call me out for being too hard on Trump; my Dem pals will say I’ve gone soft in the head and gut. Guilty as charged.
But our bitter partisan nightmare, with the 2024 election less than 600 days away, represents more than what would be at stake in a New York City courthouse.
This is an inflection point, an American moment beyond Vietnam, Watergate, Clinton/Lewinsky, Sept. 11.
Trump in handcuffs would delight progressives, but mark my words — you’re not going to like the way this turns out. Bragg’s prosecution is the right’s persecution. It will breathe new oxygen into the fires burning in MAGA land, to results that will make America worse off than when we started this sordid tale.
In my fantasy — one I know is certifiably insane — Trump takes the out provided by a prosecutorial pass and passes himself on 2024.
Or, better still, he gets political-
ly euthanized in the primaries by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley or any sane Republican capable of looking at Kari Lake and saying what’s obvious to the rest of us: “Vice president? I wouldn’t buy you a movie ticket, much less put you on a ticket for the White House.”
I know. Crazy talk. This is a time for seriousness, not fantasies. Like that speech Ford gave almost 60 summers ago, quoting leaders whose faces are on Mount Rushmore.
“Thomas Jefferson said the people are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty. And down the years, Abraham Lincoln renewed this American article of faith asking, ‘Is there any better way or equal hope in the world?’”
Let’s hope the people have stronger spines and hearts than our leaders and we find a way to get beyond the headlines yet to come in the case of the state of New York vs. President Donald Trump.
Credit Card Competition Act will do more harm than good
BY LIZ AGBOOLA Trinity Integrated Care CEO
The beginning of the 2023 legislative session is a critical time for Arizona. Our congressional delegation is busy working on policies to help Arizonans, particularly our most vulnerable — communities of color, low-income folks, and our small banks and businesses.
As a minority business owner, I strongly oppose the Credit Card Competition Act (CCCA) proposed
legislation. The bill may seem to help big-box retailers save money on credit card processing fees, but in reality, it will do more harm than good.
As we have seen in the past, such regulations result in higher fees, reduced access to credit, and the closing of bank accounts, especially for marginalized groups. The CCCA will exacerbate these problems and will have a devastating impact on small businesses and vulnerable communities.
As Sen. Marco Rubio has pointed out, “The measure of a government’s
success is not whether it can reduce poverty, but whether it can create prosperity.” Unfortunately, the proposed legislation is not only harmful but also fails to consider the needs and interests of consumers, particularly low-income and minority communities. It is essential to prioritize the well-being and interests of all consumers, especially the most vulnerable. Any policy or legislation that disproportionately benefits the rich while harming the poor is morally wrong and should be opposed.
CCCA would add routing man-
dates to credit, which will force banks to add an additional “unaffiliated” payment network to their credit cards, instead of just the ones they trust. In response, payment networks will lower interchange rates for merchants — the fees merchants pay to process credit cards — so they can compete with the influx of new, cheap networks. When rates across the board drop, big retailers will see much lower costs to process credit cards.

Remembering a ‘Prophet without Office’
BY J.D. HAYWORTH West Valley View Columnist
nother Saint Patrick’s Day has come and gone, so pack up your garishly green sweater and put away your shamrock-shaped badge with “Kiss me, I’m Irish!”
Now, the legacy of another Patrick who emerged as a modern-day prophet of what America could become — and circle the date Jan. 20 on your calendar.
It was on that last day of the workweek in the first month of this year that longtime “Newsmax Insider” Patrick J. Buchanan gave that website a scoop: His forthcoming syndicated column would be his last.
Of course, confining a description of Buchanan to a mere mention of his affiliation with a conservative news outlet is akin to restricting the resume of Thomas Jefferson to his
status as the inventor of the dumbwaiter.
AWhile history understandably devotes several volumes to the “Sage of Monticello,” it should also make room for much more than just a footnote on this most “Un-Washington” of native Washingtonians and his three campaigns for the presidency.
After all, Buchanan served as a White House advisor to the two GOP chief executives who were reelected by historic margins — Richard Nixon, who carried 49 states in 1972, and Ronald Reagan, who won 49 states as well as D.C. but lost Minnesota in 1984.
Now that he’s retired at 84, both friends and foes find it difficult to believe that Pat will strictly observe his right to remain silent in the “Courtroom of Public Opinion.”
That’s because he punctuated his years advising presidents and running for the office himself as a cele-
brated and unapologetically conservative columnist and commentator.
And it’s the “unapologetic” part of that description that prompted so many jeers and so much static from today’s mislabeled “liberals.” In fact, it was alleged that one wag from the “socialist authoritarian” camp could scarcely contain his glee, crowing that “The ‘Great Right Hope’ has left the debate!”
Don’t be so sure.
Even if he refuses all interviews and never writes another column, Buchanan’s voice endures.
You won’t have to track down old recordings of Pat’s days as the original conservative co-host of CNN’s “Crossfire,” nor his later time at MSNBC — where those letters have come to stand for “Makeup Stuff and Never Believe Conservatives.”
Instead, it is the simple power of his prose — and many of the ideas behind it.
The words used by Buchanan — in several of his aforementioned columns, his 13 books and on the campaign trail — are not only on the right, most are absolutely right.
In 1992, he challenged incumbent President George H.W. Bush and made an eloquent case against what today is called “equity.”
“If discrimination is wrong when practiced against Black men and women, it is wrong when practiced against any man or woman. All quotas in federal agencies will be abolished — and the ideas of excellence and merit will be restored.”
From his 1996 campaign for the Republican nomination, where he scored early wins in Louisiana, Missouri and New Hampshire, Buchanan bemoaned Bush 41’s relaxed border security and increasingly incoherent approach to immigration. What he

The theory is that by helping retailers save money, they will lower prices for consumers. Yet we already know that will not happen. Years ago, Sen. Richard Durbin pushed through an amendment to impose routing mandates on our debit market and cap debit card interchange fees. Since then, small retailers have faced higher debit processing costs and big retailers have saved more than $90 billion. But an economic brief from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond found that 98.8% of retailers either raised prices or kept prices the same after debit regulation. These savings could have been a godsend for struggling families, but they were nowhere to be found.
In today’s credit card version, the bill does not even mention consumers. That is because the sponsors know it will not actually help us. You will see some of the community banks that were intended

described over a quarter-century ago sounds as if it’s ripped from today’s headlines:
“We need a sea wall to stop the tidal wave of illegal immigration and narcotics sweeping over our southern border. We need a ‘time out’ on legal immigration — to assimilate and Americanize the millions who have come in recent decades.”
Ironically, Donald Trump briefly battled Buchanan for the Reform Party nomination in 2000. Though the billionaire businessman quickly withdrew, it appears he became an “apprentice” to Pat’s political philosophy, eventually adopting its corner-
to help minority communities have to limit their capacity of resources. This keeps communities like mine from having access to capital or some of the most basic financial amenities.
I cannot stress enough how devastating this will be to Arizona’s most vulnerable communities and our small businesses. Half of Blackowned businesses reported challenges accessing credit in the past year, compared with 28% of whiteowned businesses. And nearly three out of four Black-owned businesses that reported facing business funding challenges dug into their own pockets to cover costs, more than any other firms owned by another racial or ethnic group.
It is abundantly clear that the Credit Card Competition Act will not help consumers and will hurt low-income and minority Arizonans. Our congressional delegation should fight against any efforts to bring back this harmful bill.
stone as his own.
In fact, the Trump of today sounds like the Buchanan of three decades ago, who wrote, “Our resolve is to put America first, to make America first again, and to keep America first. … We must begin to look out for the forgotten Americans right here in the United States.”
Pat Buchanan will not be forgotten, nor will many of his ideas gather dust. Instead, Americans will come to regard him as a “Prophet without Office.”
J.D. Hayworth represented Arizona in the U.S. House from 1995-2007. He authored and sponsored the Enforcement First Act, legislation that would have mandated enforcement of Federal Immigration Law in the 109th Congress.

Verrado’s Michael Watkins named 5A Player of the Year
BY JOE McHUGH West Valley View Sta Writer
After stepping on the pitch for the start of his senior season, Verrado High School forward Michael Watkins a goal in mind — to improve and become a better player than he was last year while helping the team be the best it could be in hopes to take home a state championship in his nal go-around as a Viper.
Little did he know that he would have the best season in Verrado history. e team recorded 77 points to the tune of a 21-2 record, and Watkins played a vital role, tallying 29 goals and 19 assists.
Watkins’ performance in the regular season awarded him the AIA 5A Player of the Year award and made the AIA First Team All-Conference roster to cap his senior campaign.
“I had no idea I would make it this
far for my ( rst year on varsity),” Watkins said. “My goal for a senior is to be able to make rst team all-region. And so, for me to come this far, I’m very ecstatic and very happy with my growth.”
Watkins began the season blazing hot going on a seven game goal scoring streak, scoring 13 goals in the span while adding six assists added in. His historic production was cemented in the fact that he logged at least one point in every single game of the year, and was a driving factor to him being named the top player in the conference.
With his e orts, Verrado was one of the most proli c o ensive teams in the state and beating opponents by double digits on multiple occasions. By scoring 120 goals on the season, the Vipers had a goal di erential of +25 on the year.
is dominance netted Verrado the No. 2 seed in the 5A state championship bracket. e team blew through region rival Sierra Linda, but fell short 1-0 in the quarter nal round.
Watkins, with his season as impressive as it was, is shy to say the credit is all his. He knows the beautiful game requires all 11 players on the eld performing as a cohesive unit in order to succeed in the way Verrado did this year.
“I feel as though teams didn’t really do the research on us, because I feel like if they tried to take one of us out, we had three or four other people that could do the job that I was doing,” Watkins said. “I could easily be like the third or fourth leading goal scorer, but it just happened to be me. I was just always in the area to provide goal-scoring opportunities.”
To achieve the season he did, Watkins put in countless hours behind the scenes that made the player that his teammates and opposing teams saw on the pitch.
“It’s a lot of the extra work that they do outside of the game,” Verrado head coach James Press said. “ ey will get together and do a shooting practice on their own on Saturdays. ey want to really be a top team in this state.
“When I came in three years ago and told them, that was what we’re going to try to get to. It was one of those things where they were on board. And all the work that they put in together for the last three years, like I said, just came to the forefront
this year.”
Although Watkins wasn’t able to lift the championship trophy this year, he comes away with being the rst Conference Player of the Year in Verrado’s history and will serve as the new standard for individual and team success for years to come. While he moves forward into the collegiate level and further into his soccer career.
“I hope that the freshmen and sophomores on our team use my stats as motivation to try to overtake me,” Watkins said. “I want them to break my record because that means we’re doing well. And I want success for this program in the upcoming seasons.”

Kokomo, Indiana, native, Amanda Houser always loved playing and taking care of her nephews and nieces growing up, and that’s what led her to pursuing a teaching career. She earned her degree at NAU by attending classes at Estrella Mountain Community College. Houser explained, “I try to build up my students’ confi dence and ask them questions about what their interests are. I try to encourage a positive space where differences are celebrated and learning is fun. I embrace who I am (weird and all) in front of my students, and I think they notice that I am real with them. I think one of the most important parts of teaching is the relationship between the teacher and student. They need to know I see them. I’m here every day doing this with them, because I believe in them.”

Illinois native Amy Lowe has been a musician all of her life. Sharing that passion is No. 1 to her. “My music education philosophy is every student should have a comprehensive music education, even though that doesn’t happen,” she said. “When I came here, I was surprised to see how little the West Valley has.” Music programs lend themselves to socioemotional learning. “What better for these kids than the arts?” She has an answer, too, for folks who say they can’t sing. “If you can talk, if you don’t think you can sing, you’ve never been taught how,” she added. “Everyone should have a chance to be involved in the arts.”

‘Big Trains’ spring open house returns to the Valley
BY JOSH ORTEGA West Valley View Staff Writer
Train layouts remind many people of Christmas as a child and, for one local organization, every day is Christmas.
The Arizona Big Train Operators nonprofit will hold its annual spring open house noon to 4 p.m. Saturday April 1, and Sunday, April 2, at seven total homes across the Valley.
Group members say that it’s the best way to keep the history of locomotives alive. While it can be expensive, the one thing the train owners and operators enjoy more than the pastime itself is seeing the joy it brings to people who visit their displays.
“A lot of people still enjoy the history of railroads,” Arizona Big Train Operators member Don Sorenson said.
Sorenson joined Arizona Big Train Operators (ABTO) in 2006 but had an
interest in trains long before that, as his father worked as a brakeman for Union-Pacific Railroad for five years.
He said some of the members have mechanical and engineering backgrounds and this keeps their minds
occupied with something familiar.
Amtrak saw a 5% decrease in its Arizona station usage between fiscal year 2018 to 2019.
“People don’t ride the trains anymore,” ABTO President Darrell Wool-
folk said.
Woolfolk said the group’s membership saw an upsurge in 2021 with 13 new families joining, and with that, the organization now has 75 members across the Valley.
Woolfolk joined the organization in 2013 and has served as the president of the ABTO for the last six years.
He said while only about half of their members have layouts, they all meet to help each other collaborate and build “extremely elaborate” villages.
“It’s not like setting up on a card table when you were a kid,” Woolfolk said.
The individual cars measure approximately nine inches tall by 24 inches long with a handful connected that run on tracks up to 500 linear feet through a village.

West Point High School teacher, coach writes children’s book
BY COLE JANUSZEWSKI West Valley View Staff Writer
Kevin Ivory, a teacher and coach at West Point High School, recently released a book titled “Queen Leilani.”
The children’s book features Leilani, “an adventurous and sometimes mischievous girl” who must use courage to “find her kingdom and take her place as queen.” Ivory said he based the book on his exwife’s story in order to inspire his child who has special needs.
“The goal is to create fairy tales out of the real people that are in his life to kind of put them in the light of a hero,” he said. “This way he doesn’t have to look at T.V. and entertainment for heroes.”
Beyond just inspiring his son, Ivory said he wrote the book in order to give underprivileged groups access to books.
“I’m promoting literacy,” he said. “I do sell books but that’s not the focus. The focus is on promoting literacy
because I was living in Nicaragua for three years and it’s one of the poorest countries I’ve ever visited. And it’s really only poor because people don’t know how to read.”
To achieve this mission, Ivory is in the process of creating a nonprofit and has partnered with The Arizona School Boards Association and The Black Alliance to donate some of the books. He also plans to donate 70% of all proceeds from this book to charity.
“It’s not that I don’t want to sell the books,” he said. “The books are for sale, they are $15.99, but what I would much rather do is give them away to people who have a need. Say that you have a son who is in first grade with a class of thirty people. I want you to be able to go to my nonprofit website, fill out a sheet and donate 30 books to his class.
“So, what we’ll do is take those thirty books on your behalf and go into the class, hand out the books and talk a little bit. Then, you just do-
nate whatever you feel is necessary. The books are $15.99, but if all you did was give us a dollar that’ll work.”
He also said that he wants to eventually expand these donations into other countries, such as Nicaragua and Vietnam. Currently, he is working on translating his books to Spanish and some Native American languages.
This strong emphasis on writing and spreading literacy wasn’t something that Ivory was passionate about growing up. Instead, he said he took up writing after serving two tours of duty in Iraq.
“After I got back from Iraq I volunteered to go back for my second tour because I just couldn’t stand being home,” Ivory said. “As candid as this sounds, I was really going back to finish the job that I felt like should have happened on my first tour. I didn’t think I was going to make it back and I almost got what I wished for. That’s

Specifically, he said he feels empowered turning his innermost thoughts into art that can be consumed by all.

The villages can take up a person’s entire backyard and some include railyards, tunnels, ponds and functioning lights on the buildings.
The layouts can have multiple zones and take anywhere from one day to two weeks to put together but most of them only layout for their Spring and Christmas Open House events.
“There’s not many of the youth that have been on a train,” Woolfolk said.
Sharing their hobby, especially with children, represents an integral part of the organization›s purpose “to promote and advance the interest in and educate the general public about Railroads and large-scale model railroading,” according to their bylaws.
The group maintains train layouts at Banner Children’s at Desert and Hospice of the Valley at Ryan House.
Mesa’s Red Mountain Library has approached the organization with an opportunity to possibly hold a week-
the day I can use that power to get stuff off my chest. The experiences that I’ve gone through are not something that I could just talk about everyday. So, to put it in a place where it’s art also gives it safety from judgment in a lot of ways because people view art as expression.”
Looking toward the future, he said he has other books in the works — including a story about Martin Luther King Jr. Ivory also hopes to have his nonprofit approved and working soon.

Woolfolk said the spring event takes place during daylight hours and acts as a “trial run” for the nonprofit’s Christmas show.
The spring show draws hundreds of people in a weekend to members’ backyards and twice that number during Christmas when many of the layouts light up.
Sorenson said that trains are an important part of the country’s history that young people should remember.
“I find that people are very enamored by the railroad,” he said. “They’re part of our history.”

Kids poetry group entered in statewide contest
BY SUMMER AGUIRRE West Valley View Sta Writer
Through the art of poetry, “seeds of creativity” were planted in a children’s pilot poetry group in the West Valley.
Primary Poets, sponsored by the nonprofit organization Arizona State Poetry Society (ASPS), consisted of students ages 5 to 12 from West Valley school districts.
Coordinator and former teacher Karen Márquez Morales taught the children the art and its valuable skills via Zoom over the course of two months, concluding with a performance earlier this year — just in time for Poetry Month in April.
“I felt like I made a tiny difference in how they see the world and was able to give them a tool of creativity that they may use to enrich their daily lives,” Morales said. “As always, I learned a lot about myself from them as well. I learned that there is so much good left in the world and that kids are resilient even after a pandemic. Which in turn makes me
more resilient and inspired, too.”
Primary Poets
The Primary Poets group was born due to ASPS’s desire to further its mission of promoting the art of poetry through a youth engagement program, to which Morales decided to gear toward elementary school-age children.
The group consisted of 14 students from the Pendergast, Peoria, Avondale, Litchfield and Phoenix elementary school districts, many of whom did not have any previous experience with poetry.
Morales taught each of them how to write different styles of poems from samples, a variety of performance strategies and opportunities to practice reading in front of audiences.
The poems they created were all different, ranging from haikus to freestyles, and told stories about what the color pink reminds them of, the realities of middle school, and how we are all “seen” and never alone.
“They all went to different schools;

that was really hard,” Morales said. “We didn’t meet each other until the night (of the performance). Luckily, they all meshed together and they helped each other.”
To showcase their poems and the skills they had developed by the end of the course, the group held a performance in late January in the children’s program room at the Georgia T. Lloyd Library in Goodyear.
The overall theme of the night was inspired by a Michael Jackson quote, in which he said, “The magic, the wonder, the mystery and the innocence of a child’s heart are the seeds of creativity that will heal the world.”
With the room full of family, friends and community members, the children read their pieces at a poetry stand laced with lights on a glitter-strewn red carpet.
To enhance their readings, some students even brought props, like one girl who had a mint plant to accompany her poem, titled “Green.”
Many of the children had their poems memorized to help their fear of performing in front of an audience.
“I had some kids who would lisp or who stuttered or who were really shy,” Morales said. “And they got up there

in front of everybody, and they did it.”
Afterward, the group retreated to the courtyard to autograph their Primary Poets Anthology, which their coordinator had designed for them to sign for attendees.
“All of the children did a wonderful job, and it turned out to be a magical night,” Morales said.
ASPS’s Youth Poetry Contest
The Primary Poets participants had their work entered in the 2023 Youth Poetry Contest, a statewide competition hosted by the ASPS to celebrate Poetry Month.
The contest is open to all first through 12th grade Arizona students, who will compete in three different brackets organized by grade level. Poems can cover any topic and must be submitted by the deadline on April 30. There is no entry fee. Submissions will be judged by a panel of individuals outside of the ASPS to maintain validity.
First- through third-place winners of each bracket will receive cash
prizes up to $50 and have their poems published in the ASPS Sandcutters Anthology.
Winning pieces will be announced by the end of May.
As of mid-March, there were over 150 poems submitted in the competition alongside those of Morales’ students.
Poetry’s impact
A Phoenix native and the author of “The Krayon Kids” book series, Morales taught second grade in Avon-
dale for 30 years before retiring from education in 2014.
She recalled teaching her students poetry decades ago, and even entering their work in ASPS’s poetry contest.
The coordinator said that poetry is a great way for students to learn how to read and write, as well as beneficial for building creativity, self-expression, and memorization and recall skills.
For younger children, in particular, she maintains that it’s “where the journey begins.”
However, in her experience, poetry is not something widely covered in curriculum today and is rather a topic taught for a single school day.
“Students these days, especially during the pandemic, never get a chance to get up and perform. At that age, it is so important to be articulate,” Morales said. “I tried to teach them so we can help them in reading, articulation, learning another language and memorization — it’s great for your brain. A lot of that isn’t happening in the schools.
“I just wanted to show (the children) that this is something important, something they can learn from and something they can teach others as well. So I learned a lot from that.”
Submissions for the Arizona State Poetry Society’s 2023 Youth Poetry Contest must be in by the Thursday, April 30, deadline. There is no entry fee.
