Sen. Martha McSally announced during a March 21 visit to Luke Air Force Base that the Department of Defense has agreed to establish a task force to combat sexual assault in the military.

During her visit, McSally, who spent nearly three decades in the military, introduced some of the task force’s goals, including improving responses to sexual assault, especially the way they’re investigated and prosecuted.

McSally, who revealed earlier this month that she had been raped by a superior officer

while in the Air Force, admitted she has always felt strongly about the issue, but was particularly inspired after hearing a talk on military sexual assault in Washington, D.C., earlier this year.

“I decided that night that I was going to share my perspectives, not just as someone who served and not just someone who was a commander, but also as a survivor of military sexual assault myself. That was not an easy decision, but I felt like it was the right thing to do at the right time so that I could help lead on this issue,” McSally told reporters outside the base.

She said the Air Force is already “leading the charge” on an initiative she proposed.

Lawmakers’ goal is to keep water levels in Lake Mead from plummeting so low that there would not be enough water for residents.

Had lawmakers not agreed to the plan, it could have meant the state would lose its allotment of water from the Central Arizona Project (CAP), which supplies most Arizonans with water.

Water managers expect Mead’s levels to drop low enough that by May of this year, there would be a shortage declaration and reduced water allocations.

The plan lawmakers approved will mitigate those cuts.

“The Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) January 2019 prediction shows that there is a 69-percent chance the water level elevation in Lake Mead would be below 1,075 feet on December 31, 2019,” Johnson said. “The city has in place its drought management plan, which looks at the reductions in our water supply and prescribes appropriate actions to help conserve and save water within the city.”

Implementation of the plan will help slow the water level declines in Lake Mead over the next few years, but new guidelines will need to be developed by 2026.

Bureau initiates new funding

The BOR initiated a new funding opportunity through its Basin Study Program for water operation pilots. These pilot studies will allow entities that have completed a basin study to build on the analyses and strategies developed in the basin study.

“These pilots will allow Reclamation and its partners to explore strategies and apply tools and information to address water management challenges and supply and demand imbalances,” Basin Study Program Coordinator Amanda Erath said.

Reclamation is making available $4 million available for these pilots. Those interested in applying should submit a letter of interest to their respective regional office by April 15.

“Glendale is a member of the West Valley Water Association (WVWA – formally WestCaps),” Johnson said.

“This association is currently working with the BOR on a basin study for the West Salt River Valley. It is anticipated that more work will be developed after this basin study is complete in 2020. We will work with the WVWA to access and secure funding through the BOR for future West Valley water assessment projects.”

Water management options will allow Reclamation to work with state and local partners to identify solutions to water management issues by building on completed basin studies. Pilots could include both additional analysis that would further develop strategies identified in a Basin Study, and efforts to update or expand analysis from a Basin Study.

Glendale’s drought plan is scheduled to run from 2020 through 2026 and, after 2026, the Southwestern stats would agree to a plan that would be developed to operate the Colorado River System together to ensure water supply to all the states.

During her visit, McSally also spoke with multiple high-ranking officers about their own experiences in dealing with reported assaults on their bases.

Having dealt with the issue firsthand in her own career, she offered her own perspective on what she feels needs to be done.

“On this particular topic, it was really important for me to hear from current commanders as to what their current challenges are so that I wasn’t forming my opinions based on my own experiences, and based on my own anecdotes from others around the time I was a commander,” she said.

West Valley residents honored for volunteer work

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The American Red Cross Greater Phoenix Chapter recently honored two West Valley residents for their outstanding volunteer work.

Glendale resident Linda Hicks and Southwest Phoenix resident KD Kannenberg received the Ann Magnussen and Betty Grenig Service to the Armed Forces awards, respectively, during a Red Cross volunteer awards ceremony March 23 at the Black Canyon Conference Center.

Hicks and Kannenberg were among 10 Valley residents to be recognized at the annual event.

As a registered nurse for 37 years, Hicks’ expertise is valued throughout the Red Cross Arizona-New Mexico-El Paso Region. She has served on national deployments four times. Every month, she registers for local oncall shifts to provide disaster health services to victims of house fires and other disasters. She has donated more than 3,400 hours since 2005.

Kannenberg, 84, has donated more than 3,000 hours volunteering at the Luke Air Force Base pharmacy for the past 16 years. He started volunteering after retiring as a chief master sergeant at Luke Air Force Base. He had previously served 45 years in active duty and civil service. His breadth of knowledge of the Air Force and the base’s surrounding area is very beneficial to the patients.

“I like working with people and helping them out,” Kannenberg said.

Patrick Washington, who nominated Kannenberg for the Red Cross award, said he treats all patients with respect and care.

“His customer service is phenomenal and extremely professional. He makes our patients feel valued. He is really the model volunteer. His selfless dedication is unwavering and extremely appreciated,” Washington said.

The Red Cross Greater Phoenix Chapter serves 4.83 million people across Maricopa, Pinal and Gila counties, as well as Luke Air Force Base.

About 530 adult and youth volunteers are trained to use their Red Cross skills to help save lives. Volunteers assist families during disasters including house fires, flooding and forest fires.

Police Tase, pepper spray teens during Great Skate fights

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Glendale police resorted to using Tasers and pepper spray after numerous fights broke out when attendance was capped at a local Great Skate earlier this month.

Police said there were several fights as well as incidents of vandalism, reported thefts from businesses and vehicles, kids throwing rocks at cars, and a teenager who charged at an officer during an “All Night” skating event March 16.

The situation arose after attendance was capped at more than 500 attendees, leaving about 200 people still outside sometime after 9 p.m., according to police. Groups of fights broke out in the parking lot and nearby businesses.

Two off-duty officers who had been hired as part of a partnership with Great Skate called for backup.

Furthermore, police noted that during physical fights that continued into Great Skate throughout the evening, “juveniles in attendance (flocked) toward the fights with their phones out.”

Police said the fights were a “definite safety threat,” so officers requested additional support.

Police resorted to using pepper spray in certain circumstances, which affected bystanders. Those involved in the fights were detained.

Entrance to the venue was admitted through the main doors and with wristbands, police noted, but at one point someone opened a fire escape exit door, allowing unchecked entries.

One 16-year-old boy found without a wristband “became visibly upset and assumed an aggressive stance” when a uniformed officer made contact, police said.

Despite the officer at first deescalating the situation and leading the teen outside, the teen then ripped a sign at the door and knocked a display to the ground before returning and charging at an officer. As the teen made contact with the officer, he was pepper sprayed by another officer. The impacted officer then turned around and Tased the teen, who was handcuffed and taken to a hospital out of precaution.

The event was cut short once police

diffused the fights. Likening the environment to a “mob,” police said age groups were separated and attendees were required to call their guardians.

However, with police working to break up additional fights still ongoing in the parking lot and surrounding businesses, teenagers began to jump on and kick marked police vehicles, officers said. Damage was reported to marked vehicles as well as an off-duty officer’s personal vehicle.

Minor injuries from the fights, exposure to residual pepper spray and minor health issues were treated, police said. The 16-year-old who charged an officer was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. His case was forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

“Following this incident, Glendale Police and Great Skate management have been in constant contact as we collaboratively address what has happened and what precautions can be taken in the future to ensure that this is an environment that can be attended and enjoyed for years to come without the fear of uninvited guests interrupting the event,” police said.

In a Facebook post by Great Skate, representatives for the company said teens involved in the incident have been banned.

“This past Saturday night, we had a handful of troublemakers show up at our facility who clearly came with motives much different than ours. These few teens not only disrespected other teens in the building but also police officers, security and our staff,” the post read. “Quite frankly, we were appalled at this small group’s behavior … The behavior of the few troublemakers this past Saturday night are not reflective of the usual crowd that we have at Great Skate.

“We extend our deepest apologies for the behavior of the teenagers that attended that acted disrespectfully and in some cases violently towards our other valued guests and staff. We extend an extra special apology and thank you to the Glendale police officers who had to assist us that evening. We are endlessly thankful for their presence.”

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Recent severe weather events forced the closure of numerous blood donor centers and the cancellation of blood drives. Patients need help in building the blood supply locally and across the country.

Arizona has less than a one-day blood supply of both O-positive and O-negative blood types – the universal blood that is substituted for other types in emergency and shortage situations. While donors of all blood types are needed, Type-O is in greatest demand. So, Vitalant is organizing new ways for individuals to give blood.

Council updated on general obligation bond uses

As the city continues its economic turnaround of the past couple of years, council members heard an update on how to spend $213.5 million in available general obligation (GO) bonds over the fiscal years 2010-26.

GO bonds are used to fund facility, infrastructure and equipment capital improvement projects, such as flood control, open space and trails, parks, public safety, transportation, economic development and cultural and government facilities, as well as libraries.

“Council already approved $15.8 million in bond sales, which will take place in March. And then we will have planned in 202021 another sale of about $22.7 million,” said Vicki Rios, the city’s director of budget and finance. “That can change with flexibility, but that is close to what we have in those years.”

Council reviews and approves the 10-year capital improvement plan (CIP), which serves as a 10year roadmap for constructing, repairing, maintaining and improving present

and future infrastructure needs.

Capital improvement projects are considered non-routine capital expenditures that generally cost more than $50,000 and result in the purchase of equipment and software; acquisition of land; funding of capital needs assessment studies; paying for design and construction of new assets; and funding the renovation, rehabilitation or expansion of existing capital assets.

During the March 5 workshop, staff presented to council a list of projects, which were ranked based on discussion over how the city should plan to use the upcoming bond money.

Some of the top projects listed were underground storage tank replacement at city government facilities; numerous flood control improvements; and street and public safety projects.

The flood projects, which have been scheduled for 2023, were moved up to one of the top projects in 2021-22.

Among the items questioned most during the March 5 workshop were public safety remodels, local parks and water utility rates increases.

Staff presented their report on the

potential remodels of city court and the city prosecutor’s office, among others.

The plan presented budgeted GO bond money in the amount of $800,000 for fiscal year 2019-20 as well as an additional $7,532,000 in the following year.

Councilmembers questioned the timing and asked if it could be expedited.

“I believe the prosecutor’s office has a high priority, and will part of the $800,000 scheduled for FY 19-20 be used to solve that issue,” Yucca councilmember Joyce Clark said.

“It is my understanding that the amount in FY 19-20 is for design for court and prosecutor office with construction in 2021,” Rios said.

Clark wondered if that was something they could expedite.

“We were planning a discussion sooner, but based on last minute meetings staff is digging deeper on the plan, so we recognize it is a priority and we are looking for a solution for the entire city attorney’s office,” City Manager Kevin Phelps said. “What we do have to do now is see it would fit in other city buildings, and we are working SEE BONDS PAGE 10

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Perez Villa is the son of Raymond Olireras of Glendale, and Stephanie and Erick Zumach of Phoenix.

The airman is a 2017 graduate of Betty H. Fairfax High School in Phoenix.

Former Apollo High School student Lee Perreira desperately wants to get Ellen DeGeneres’ attention.

The rock ‘n’ blues musician’s goal is to be a worldwide superstar who is inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

With DeGeneres’ help, he came make his dreams come true. For more than 200 days, he has submitted through her website, the desire to be on her show.

“I play music and I want to end up on the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, tour the world, and record an EP,” he said.

To get her attention, he’s running from Phoenix to Burbank, California.

In the meantime, he is collecting funds for four charities: AZ Cancer Foundation for Children; Chrysalis-Driving Out Domestic Violence; AHCA – Arizona Health Care Foundation; and Ellen DeGeneres Campus – Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. His goal is $1 million. To donate, visit leeperreira.com.

with the city attorney. We understand this is a council priority.”

One idea that has been floated is moving the city attorney’s office out to the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center.

“There are a number of issues. We are looking at GRPSTC, but they require a number of things such as secure areas. Once we figure out what space is needed, and if we can do it within our budgeted numbers, we will make a decision,” Phelps said.

One additional project that has been discussed, the remodel of the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheater, was pushed back during the council process. Phelps presented drawings and artist renderings in 2018 of a remodeled amphitheater with 1,200 to 1,400 permanent seats and a grass seating area. Among the added amenities would be shade cover, specialty Americans with Disabilities Act areas, and other permanent fixtures that would improve the performance area.

But after numerous merchants protested changes, fearing the city would cancel city-sponsored special events such as Glendale Glitters, Glitter & Glow and the Chocolate Affaire,

Phelps they reiterated were already scheduled for next season.

Phelps pointed to city staff, which he said is working diligently to bring business into the downtown area. Staff is focusing on the amphitheater as a way for performers and musicians to advertise events in downtown, with some paid ticketed events of bands potentially driving hundreds of people to the area year-round.

Originally planned to begin in 201819, the project was pushed back until fiscal year 2022-23.

“The amphitheater project was moved back to 2022-23 with $202,000 projected and then $2,670,624 in FY 2023-24 for the project at the request of council,” Rios said.

Also projected for GO bond money is the Heroes Regional Park Lake, which was moved up to FY 19-20.

Staff said of the available in bond funding, the breakdown was $15.8 million in FY 2018-19, $22.7 million in FY 2020-21, $70 million in FY 202223, $50 million in FY 2023-24, $30 million in FY 2024-25, $25 million in FY 2025-26.

No bond money would be available in FY 2019-20 or projected for FY 2027-28.

GESD will launch specialty schools in fall of 2019 In an effort to provide innovative learning opportunities for all students, continue to increase achievement levels, and offer families greater educational choices, the Glendale Elementary School District will launch six new learning academies for the 2019-20 school year.

The Dual Language Immersion program, already successfully established for kindergarten students and housed at Horizon and William C. Jack, will expand to include first grade students next year.

“We will continue to grow this program until these schools are Dual Language Immersion Schools and not just programs,” said Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Dr. Gerry Petersen-Incovaia. It will be joined by these other programs for the 201920 school year: Career Pathway Academy, Landmark This K-8 program will explore career pathways to high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. A kindergarten through sixth-grade program will explore career pathways within science and social studies. The seventh- and eighth- grade program will imbed in-school and out-of-school targeted career training through workforce partnerships. It will work similar to the current program established at Landmark.

“This academy will work like a Pre-CTE program for a pathway into CTE programs in Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD),” Dr. Petersen-Incovaia said. “We will align our new science and social studies standards and the Career and Technical Education 8 Modules to identify the overarching concepts that will be taught per grade level.”

We celebrated Music In Our Schools day with a performance by third-graders from 12 of our schools.

Working under an All That Jazz theme, students performed eight songs by such noted artists as Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and Spenser Williams.

STEAM Academies, Burton and Coyote Ridge This K-8 program will integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) modules into science and social studies. The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade program will integrate STEAM electives, or exploratories, into the related arts; for example: coding, drafting, guitar, digital photography. Students also will sample after school academies that will focus on STEAM including, general robotics, Lego League robotics and coding, choir and dance.

Innovative Learning Academies, Melvin E. Sine and Challenger Both schools are Verizon Digital Promise Grant Recipients. Through this program every child in the fourth- through eighth-grades and every certified staff member receives a tablet including network access. Innovative Technology will be integrated into academics across the 4-8-grade spectrum, and a Makerspace will be available at each school.

Accelerated Academy, Bicentennial North In this seventh-, eighth-grade program, curriculum will be aligned with grade-level standards and GUHSD Advanced Placement (AP) coursework. The goal is to create a pathway to AP classes in GUHSD. Instruction will include the AP Springboard curriculum in English Language Arts, GUHSD Algebra and GUHSD Geometry curriculum.

“In the first year of the Accelerated Academy, North will provide a seventh- and eighth-grade experience for accelerated courses for identified students,” Dr. Petersen-Incovaia said. “During the first year, a sixth-grade preparation pathway will allow for students to try an accelerated curriculum. In subsequent years, the program will be provided for fourth- through eighth-grade students.”

Depression is a tale we too often avoid discussing

With each passing birthday comes a sense of time shortening. The older you get, the more you understand that you have more days behind than days left to come. You awaken to each new morning determined to invest meaning into whatever time you have left.

Some people might call this occurrence a midlife crisis. Me, I’m not that eloquent. I call it feeling supremely tired of life’s bull.

Like hiding things. I’m so very tired of hiding things.

I’m not talking about privacy, keeping secret your Social Security number and passwords. I’m talking about how fear of what others may think or say prevents us from revealing who we are and that with which we struggle.

I’m talking about the burdens we

carry in silence from cradle to grave, the things we never say for fear of stigma or humiliation. I’m talking about speaking aloud the truths most of us confine to the voice that speaks to us from deep within.

I’ve talked to therapists and doctors for more than 20 years. I’ve taken antidepressant medication. I’ve told pieces of the story to trusted loved ones. But never once have I been honest about myself with the world at large.

I am doing so today because I am 54 – old enough to understand that I am no exception to life’s afflictions. I’ve had good friends take their own lives because of depression. I’ve watched brilliant men and women, people of the utmost character, have their lives decimated by this burdensome darkness.

I’ve struggled rather than ask for help, and I’ve stood by while others struggled – people for whom I might have offered a kind word, or been a resource. Instead, all I did was bear silent witness. That’s not enough.

At 54, there is not one more material thing I need as a gift. Thus, on this birthday I thought it would be more fitting to flip the script and offer a gift to anyone who happens to read these words. Call it advice or some hard-won knowledge, or a whisper from a fellow traveler.

This thing you have is real, and it sucks, but you are by no means unique in this. The voice in your head that tells you no one cares, that you are not worth it, that you should suffer in silence – that voice is a trick played on us by our affliction.

There are millions of people alive today who know the exact same feeling, people who would gladly walk beside you if only they knew what was in your heart, your mind.

Speak your truth. Ask for help. Help someone else. But know this – you are not alone. You never were, except that like me you allowed your silence to make it so. Depression may not be a choice, but honesty absolutely is.

Depression is but one story in a life full of them. It’s a tale we too often avoid, fearful how the world might react. All these years have taught me that it’s the stories we keep to ourselves that do the most damage.

This darkness hates the light. Better to speak the truth, then, to let the light flood in.

Getting screened helps Celebrating Women’s prevent colorectal cancer History Month

Colorectal cancer is generally found in men and women age 50 or older, but it does not discriminate between age groups, race or ethnicity. If you have a family history of colon cancer or colon polyps, it can occur at an earlier age.

As one of the most common, but most preventable cancers, colorectal cancer screening should be on anyone’s calendar who may be at risk for the disease. Screening can find precancerous polyps, which are abnormal growths in the colon or rectum, that can be removed before they become cancer.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about nine out of every 10 people whose colorectal cancers are found early and received appropriate treatment are still alive five years later. Screening helps find any colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

Regular screening is the key to preventing colorectal cancer, and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults age 50 to 75 receive the screening at regular intervals.

If you think you are at risk, ask your doctor about when to begin screening,

which test is right for you and how frequently you should be tested.

A colonoscopy is a simple procedure that allows your doctor to look inside the entire large intestine. It is frequently performed to detect early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum.

The test also may be done to obtain a tissue sample for biopsy, diagnose inflammatory bowel disease or evaluate unexplained abnormalities (such as polyps), anemia, blood in the stool, abdominal pain or persistent diarrhea.

Preparation for a colonoscopy usually begins several days before the actual procedure. Your doctor will provide instructions for the prep, which must be followed to ensure an effective screening. On the day of the procedure, you will be given a moderate sedative and pain medication to help you relax and keep you comfortable during the exam.

Images of your colon are transmitted by a colonoscope onto a video screen so your doctor can examine the intestinal lining. Polyps can be removed using tiny tools inserted through the scope. Tissue samples will be sent to the lab to determine if they are cancerous.

Most colonoscopy procedures last approximately a half hour, plus time for preparation and recovery. You should be able to return to normal activities by the next day.

Every March, we celebrate Women’s History Month. It’s a month to reflect on and celebrate the many accomplishments and contributions of women to our nation. As the first Republican woman to represent Arizona’s Eighth Congressional District, I feel so blessed to serve alongside 105 other women, the most women to ever serve in the U.S. Congress.

I am also fortunate to live in and represent the state of Arizona, which has been leading the way for women for 107 years.

Arizona gave women the right to vote in 1912, the same year it officially became the 48th state, which is eight years before the United States gave voting rights to women. Our state has had more female governors than any other state in the nation, and the first female U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor, was an Arizonan. We are a leader in electing women, and we are home of the “Fab Five,” when the top five statewide elected offices were all held by women. These are just a few of the ways that Arizona has forged the path for women leaders.

In Congress, I was elected to serve as the Republican chairwoman of the Bipartisan Congressional Women’s Caucus. I lead the caucus with Brenda Lawrence, a Democrat representative from Michigan. What makes the Women’s Caucus unique is that we truly are a bipartisan group. Each woman in Congress is a member of the caucus, so we have a large, bipartisan group ready to tackle the issues facing women, children and families here in the United States.

The Bipartisan Women’s Caucus will work on some big issues this Congress. One of those will be combating domestic violence. This issue is personal to me, as I am a survivor of domestic violence. I want to help other

victims and show them that a new life is possible.

Other issues we will address include the high rate of maternal mortality in the United States. We will also look for ways to expand women’s financial security, including improving access to capital for women-owned small businesses, economic self-sufficiency, and retirement security. We will continue to focus on combating sex and human trafficking and violence against women and girls, including on our campuses and in the military.

Care giving, elder care and health issues specific to older women, as well as opioid misuse and mental health, will also be some of our priorities. If there are issues you would like to see the Women’s Caucus focus on this year, please visit my website at lesko.house.gov.

So this month, let us remember the achievements of women from the past and present, and be hopeful for what women will achieve in the future.

Best-selling author comes to push ‘The A List’

In second grade, author J.A. Jance read Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz” series and fell in love. Not with the mystery of the wizard behind the green curtain, but with Baum and the talent behind the words. She thought maybe she could do the same.

In that moment, Jance knew she wanted to be a writer.

After years of rejection, Jance is a New York Times best-selling author with 59 books and counting.

“It’s wonderful,” Jance said about her success. “I grew up in Bisbee, Arizona, and reading was my way to get beyond the confines of that small Arizona town. I dreamt of being a writer, but I had no idea how wonderful the dream would be.”

Jance’s latest book, “The A List,” is the 14th in her Ali Reynolds series. The author is touring the state the first week of April to meet with readers and fans.

“In this book, Ali Reynolds is living her reinvented life in Sedona in the

present time, but the story pulls her back in her previous life when she was a news anchor on a TV station in L.A.,” Jance said.

“A woman comes to her and asks for her help because her 22-year-old son is on dialysis and is in need of a kidney transplant.

This story features an unexpected serial killer and it was one I came to like. I did not expect to like this serial killer.”

Jance said she looks forward meeting her readers to hear their feedback.

“Part of writing is what goes on between me and my computer keyboard, my fingers and the screen, that part of it is a very solitary existence,” Jance said. “But, I enjoy book tours. Midwestern comedy is in Dave Landau’s blood

Growing up in suburban Detroit proved to be inspirational for comedian Dave Landau.

He watched the growth of Dave Coulier and Tim Allen’s career, and studied comedians at the legendary Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan.

He discovered Coulier’s talents at age 9, when the fellow Michigander was on “Full House.” Allen was another influence.

“I grew up watching ‘Home Improvement.’ That was huge to me,” Landau said.

“One of the reasons I was turned on to comedy was I watched a documentary on Tim Allen and Mark Ridley was heavily used in it. Tim Allen was talking about Mark and the Comedy Castle and all these people who started there.”

After graduating from Grosse Pointe North High School, Landau began formally studying comedy at The Second City in Detroit.

“I started at Second City at age 19 after five years of high school,” Landau said. “I went there and started doing improv and sketch comedy.”

Since he moved to Los Angeles, he has become an in-demand comic. He’s appeared on Comedy Central’s “Live at Gotham” as well as being featured prominently on two consecutive seasons of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” He’s become a regular on the nationally syndicated “Bob & Tom” radio show, and was honored as one of the top 21 club comics at HBO’s Comedian Dave Landau got his start at The Second City – Detroit. Advanced Image Med Spa offers more than a lift

Jenessa Iannitelli had an epiphany while she was working as an accomplished surgeon in a trauma unit: She wanted a better work-life balance.

But it was more than the job that inspired her to leave. Her mother, Karen Janitell, was going through her own life change. She was diagnosed with stage three blast cancer, or cancer in her cleavage. Eventually, she underwent 12 surgeries, 37 radiation treatments, three rounds of chemotherapy, job loss and “a complete abandonment of the identity” she once knew.

To help clients look their best, they opened Advanced Image Med Spa at 7942 W. Bell Road, Suite C2, in Glendale four years ago. Among its services are high-definition liposuction, facial fillers, wrinkle reduction, laser hair removal, and treatment of sun damage or age spots.

Janitell, who worked in sales and marketing for 35 years, visits Advanced Image daily.

“I inherited her. She’s not really able for large companies anymore,” Iannitelli said.

“She’s been gracious enough to take over the operations for the spa. People wonder how we can work together every day. We complement each other.

As a side benefit, she’s an extremely beautiful woman and a former model.

A lot of external changes didn’t reflect what she started to feel when she recovered.”

Cancer free for seven years, Janitell can speak for Advanced Image’s treatments, as she received them as her daughter’s “test patient.” Janitell said she began to see a dramatic difference in how she felt and how people were reacting to her.

“Some people think we just do Botox and aesthetics,” Iannitelli said. “But PRP (platelet-rich plasma, a blood component that contains proteins) regenerative medicine … we have more tools to be able to help people fix issues. It’s not all straight aesthetics.

“We have a cool team – all girls in here. We’re lucky to have a great dynamic, plays out for our patients. We have high-level service and make sure everyone’s experience is the best possible.”

medicine is the whole gamut of options we offer, depending on how aggressive people want to be,” Iannitelli said.

She said lot of things in the past required major surgery. That’s not so today. New techniques are minimally invasive. Skin tightening can take 10 to 15 years off someone’s face.

“It’s nice, we try to stay very natural, not the plasticity overdone,” Iannitelli said.

She finds that appealing. The services do not require general anesthesia, so there are great results with minimal downtime, even for those with medical conditions.

There’s no age limit for patients. Iannitelli said a wide range – from teens with acne to individuals in their 80s – walk through the door. The bulk of patients are in their 50s and 60s, Iannitelli said.

“Women in their 80s keep coming back,” Iannitelli said. “We have a really happy older generation.”

The times have also erased the stigma dealing with aesthetic procedures, Iannitelli said.

“Because we have these techniques available, women who age look in the mirror and see that doesn’t match them internally,” Iannitelli said. “We have great results. They grow old gracefully and are able to do procedures that make them feel useful and sexy. Skin is the largest organ in our body, and it needs love, too.”

through their transitions. Iannitelli said they work with all ethnicities and research the nuances of different skin tones. The staff focuses on learning about their patients and the reasons behind their desires for change so they

She said they will turn away people who insist on procedures they do not feel are good for them.

“Ethnic skin is very tricky, very sensitive,” Iannitelli said. “If you don’t have technicians well versed in ethnic skin, you can do damage. All women and men are welcome – gay, lesbian, transgender welcome.”

“A lot of medical spa facilities have medical directors, but they’re aloof, they’re on paper sort of,” she said, “I’m here all day, trying to make sure our patients have the best treatment. I monitor and oversee all the treatments.

Mecum Auction crushes expectations

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Officials called the success of Mecum Auctions’ inaugural Phoenix-Glendale collector-car auction unprecedented.

From March 14 through March 17, more than 1,300 vehicles crossed the auction block at State Farm Stadium.

And sales totals rapidly climbed to more than $39 million, an 85-percent increase over Mecum’s previous record total for an inaugural event.

An event that was originally intended to span just two days and feature 600 collector cars quickly doubled in size as news of Mecum coming to Arizona spread. Throngs of enthusiasts flocked to State Farm Stadium to take part in the action and see everything from entry-level to investment-grade vehicles among a wide variety of makes, models and vintage.

The auction’s top three highest-dollar sales demonstrate that diversity, with the No. 1 spot claimed by a factory four-speed and Super Track Pakequipped 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T Convertible that demanded a final sale price of $1.43 million. Following was a 1932 Duesenberg Model J Rollston Torpedo Berline, which sold for

$880,000 and a contrasting 2011 Ferrari 599 GTO, which brought $770,000.

guy. Going by myself and being without him makes it a little less fun.”

She will only tour Arizona and Washington state, where she currently lives.

Jance writes for two different publishers, has two deadlines a year and goes on two book tours a year.

“The ‘A-List’ is book 58 and I am sending 59 and I will be on my way to 60 books. It’s safe to say that every book counts as 100,000 words and I have published a weekly blog for 13 years with about 750 words. I have written around 8 million words in my career.”

All of Jance’s works – 18 Joanna Brady books, five Walker family books, 14 Ali Reynolds books and 24 J.P. Beaumont books as well as her poetry book “Book of Fire” – are still in print. She’s proud of her works their longevity.

The pursuit of her dream had a few bumps on the way. Her first husband was accepted into a creative writing program, while she was denied. He told her there would only be one writer in the family, and it would be himself.

The director of the same program said to her, “‘Girls become teachers or nurses and boys become writers.’”

Jance continued, “All of those things are a part of my history. Here’s the thing: writers get the best revenge.

Don’t make writers mad, we have our ways of getting even.”

Jance said she never gave up on her second-grade dream. Once she divorced her husband, she was in her late 30s with two kids and a fulltime job selling life insurance. In 1981, Jance began writing during her little free time, from 4 to 7 a.m.

“I think that speaks to the power of that dream. Long before I was published, I had this sense that I was finally doing what I intended to do.

“The ancient sacred charge of the storyteller is to beguile the time. I hear from people who have just lost a spouse and are grieving and get through those sleepless nights with my books. It gives me incredible pleasure that my books have gotten through those tough times. It says that I am doing the right thing.”

Church Community Connection: When heaven can’t wait You may have heard of a movie entitled “Heaven Can Wait,” released in 1978. But what happens when heaven can’t wait?

Here are a few examples of people who have passed on and left a final message on their gravestones. Comedian Rodney Dangerfield left with a laugh. His reads, “There goes the neighborhood.” The gravestone of famous talk-show host Merv Griffin says, “I will not be right back after this message.” A man named John Yeast simply put, “Pardon me for not rising.”

Have you noticed young people tend not to read the Bible very much? Older people tend to read the Bible like crazy.

It’s like older people are cramming for their finals.

Many of you have entered the golden years. Some of you are getting ready, too. Some are still far and away from

the golden years. Whoever coined “the golden years” was “in it to spin it.” For most people, the golden years are going to be uphill all the way. Don’t misunderstand. There’s lots of gold in the golden years. But there is also drama, hurt, frustration and death. Let me explain.

The last month has been tough on me and many others, I know. I recently went to my brother’s funeral and shared about my brother, Andy. He passed on recently, at just 66 years old. It seems surreal to our family. My 94-year-old

father is living out the nightmare of every parent, living beyond one of his children.

A few weeks ago, my good friend, John Clark, who was one of the founding elders of Hosanna Christian Fellowship, passed on, too. John was incredible. He was one of the most Christ-like people I have ever known.

He was 70 years old.

Now if you think that what I have written doesn’t apply to you, I have bad news for you. Someday you’re going to look like me and be as old as me. Sorry about that. Life’s not fair all the time. If life was fair, Elvis Presley would be alive, and all the impersonators would be dead.

The key to living an abundant life in any age and especially the golden years, even with all the drama, is understanding we were born for heaven.

There comes a time for all of us when heaven can’t wait. The saying should really be when God can’t wait. Our time on earth is up. The end is just a beginning in disguise. We take step one to get to step two. It’s heaven time.

The Apostle Paul writes, “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

From the moment you were born, God has been getting you ready for what He has ready for you! We were born for this. People are born to die to be born again. “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this comes judgment.” Hebrews 9:27.

That’s one appointment you won’t be late for. Just think, for some of us this will be the only appointment we aren’t late for.

Just like Christ was born to die to live again…so are you and I. Christ traveled, in fleshly form, the path for a new type of spiritual being designed to live in the heavenly realm and enjoy God forever. Humans fully completed and fully conformed to Christ’s image. We are not human beings going through a temporary spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings going through a temporary human experience.

Here’s a metaphor on living, dying and living again for you: Remember when you could go to the gates at the airport and wave goodbye to your departing family and friends? Then when your family or friends arrive at their destination, there would be other family and friends to great them at the gates? At a funeral or homegoing, family and friends are saying goodbye to their loved one. But once that loved one arrives at heaven’s gates, those who went before them greet them. Our loss becomes heaven’s gain.

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. Heaven’s waiting and so are Andy, John and Jesus.

Nature’s clutch play saves Cactus League season

After a cold, wet start, the Cactus League was staging a late-inning rally at stadiums across the metro region.

More than 16,000 fans basked in the sun at Sloan Park on St. Patrick’s Day as the Chicago Cubs, the league’s perennial meal ticket, helped propel a late surge in attendance in Mesa and throughout most of the league.

The latest Cactus League statistics, through the March 20 games, show that Sloan Park and Cubs fans are the cleanup hitters in the Cactus League’s rally in the usual balmy conditions.

After another 16,000 fans enjoyed a game with the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 20, the Cubs were on pace for at least six games with such lofty attendance figures beyond capacity.

The Cubs had drawn 189,041 through 14 games, for an average crowd of 13,569; the Los Angles Angels of Anaheim had drawn 102,471 through 15 games for an average crowd of 6,831 at Tempe Diablo Stadium; and the Oakland Athletics had drawn 58,978 in a 10-game abbreviated schedule, for an average crowd of 5,898 at Hohokam Stadium.

Elsewhere around the league, the usual teams were leading in attendance at a level far below the Cubs’ benchmark.

The Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants were locked in a close battle for second place in the attendance sweepstakes.

The Giants have drawn 128,041 to Scottsdale Stadium through 14 games, an average of 9,146 a game and 583 fans less than a year ago.

The Dodgers have drawn about 300 more fans than the Giants, 128,475 through 13 games, but were still down 271 fans per game at Camelback Ranch in Glendale.

The league statistics showed the two teams based in Glendale, the Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox, drew a combined 205,915 fans. The average crowd in 2019 was 8,237, an increase of a modest 278 fans.

The White Sox were responsible for the small gain, drawing 688 more fans per game than the year before for an average crowd of 6,453.

the deepest declines in attendance this year at Goodyear Ballpark. The Indians had drawn 70,481 through 13 games, an average of 5,422, a decline of 1,045 fans per game.

That was offset somewhat by their partner at Goodyear Ballpark, the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds drew 65,164 through 12 games. Their average crowd per game increased by 717 fans to 5,430.

Overall, the combination of the Reds’ increase and the Indians’ decrease created a decline of 194 fans per game at Goodyear Ballpark through 23 games.

A rare series of five rainouts on March 12 throughout the league seemed like a distant memory, however, as fans laid out on blankets in the sun on the outfield berm behind the left field fence at Sloan.

Even though the Arizona Diamondbacks were rained out at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick a few miles up the Loop 101 on March 12, the Cubs got in their game against the Cincinnati Reds on that cold, damp night and still drew 12,536 fans.

“The weather wasn’t perfect. It was cold, not Cactus League-like,” said Tim Baughman, president of the Mesa HoHoKams, a civic organization that raises about $500,000 a year for charity by parking cars and performing other duties at Sloan Park and Hohokam Stadium.

Cactus League President Jeff Meyer predicted the strong finish, attributing the sluggish start to more games starting early in February and the unseasonably cool temperatures.

“It’s down, but it’s early,” Meyer said, referring to league statistics that reflected a decline in the average number of fans per game at most Cactus League stadiums through March 12. “I’m optimistic about it. I think we will have pretty good success. I can tell with the traffic.”

Overall, incomplete statistics through 190 games for the season showed the Cactus League has attracted 1,440,976 fans, or 355,427 less than last year so far, with an average crowd per game of 7,584, a drop of 126 fans from a year ago.

With two sellout games against the 2018 World Champion Boston Red Sox, who as of print time are making a highly unusual Cactus League appearance at Sloan on March 25 and March 26, it appeared the Cubs will easily erase an early season attendance deficit.

The Cubs’ deficit was whittled down from 906 fans per game on March 12 to 307 through Wednesday night.

Even a split squad game featuring a few Cubs starters and pitcher Yu Darvish, versus a Mariners team composed of mostly minor leaguers, drew more than 13,000 fans on another sunny day on March 18.

“It’s going to work out for the Cubs.

Plus, we have those last two games against Boston,” Baughman said. “We are going to finish the season strong at Sloan Park.”

The league has no control over the early start, which Meyer describes as a new normal that fans haven’t accepted yet after decades of games starting at or near

the beginning of March.

Although fans don’t associate February with baseball, games need to start earlier because Major League Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement with the Major League Players Association requires more days off during the marathon regular season.

Meyer said part of the February attendance issue is that out-of-state fans make their travel plans for March, reducing the pool of potential fans.

Rather inauspiciously, the league’s first game, between the A’s and the Mariners at Hohokam Stadium, on February 21, was rained out in the second inning.

The A’s and the Mariners major leaguers also left Arizona early to start the regular season in Japan, where Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki enjoyed a swan song at the Tokyo Dome, creating another quirk in this year’s Cactus League season.

But Meyer’s faith in an attendance comeback was rewarded on a sunny St. Patrick’s Day weekend when the Cubs recorded their second crowd of more than 16,000 fans of the season at Sloan Park, which has an official capacity of about 15,000.

Predictably, the Cubs’ first crowd beyond capacity was 16,069 fans on March 3 against their cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox. Rabid Cubs fans also undoubtedly contributed toward the Diamondbacks setting an all-time attendance record of 14,035 for a game against the 2016 World Champions on March 16 at Salt River Fields.

“It’s been great for player development and for our fans. It’s a great asset for the city of Mesa,” said Justin Piper, general manager of Sloan Park for the Cubs.

He said Sloan Park has been open since 2014 and has been a big hit since opening its gates for the first time.

“On every possible level, it has exceeded our expectations,” Piper said.

“Attendance has been strong.”

He said the attendance for those games has been the highest for any MLB team in spring training, including SEE LEAGUE PAGE 24

Arizona Coyotes battling for a playoff berth

The Arizona Coyotes are in a place in March that they have not been in a long time, battling for a playoff berth.

With six games remaining as of March 25, the Coyotes sit two points out of the final wild card berth with 79 points, tied with the Minnesota Wild.

The Dallas Stars (82 points) and Colorado Avalanche (81) hold the two Western Conference Wild Card spots.

The Coyotes have matchups against Chicago (March 26), Colorado (March 29), Minnesota (March 31), Las Vegas (April 4) and Winnipeg (April 6) but may need help if they hope to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in six years.

Over the past five games, the Coyotes have struggled, losing five in a row to fall from the final playoff spot to three points out. But head coach Rick Tocchet sees support growing for his team.

“You especially want the fans to believe in what we’re doing,” Tocchet said after a recent home game. “We asked them last year through some tough times to stick with us. I think the

fans are coming out and getting louder and louder. I think they understand that this team works hard. We’re starting to get results now, but things change quick. We’re not a rollercoaster team and we understand where we’re at, but

One of the biggest hurdles the Coyotes have had to overcome has been injuries. The team has lost over 350 man-games to injuries over the season.

Goaltender Antti Ranta (November

27), center Nick Schmaltz (December 31) and defenseman Kyle Capobianco (February 6) were all placed on injured reserve and Brad Richardson, Derek Stepan, Jakob Chychuran and Alex Galchenyuk are all among the players who have spent time injured this season.

The team has been led by Clayton Keller, who, in his second season, leads the team with 46 points (14 goals, 32 assists), and Oliver Ekman-Larsson (12 G, 28 A) to the team’s most wins since they won 37 in 2013-14.

Young players have been key to the team’s turnaround, with 23-year-old Connor Garland (12 G, 5 A) through 17 points blossoming into a strong player. He filled in strong during the team’s injuries.

Others who have stepped up have been Galchenyuk (17 G, 22 A), with 39 points; Vinnie Hinostroza (15 G, 19 A), who earned 34 points; Nick Cousins (6 G, 19 A), who hit 25 points; Lawson Crouse (11 G, 11 A), who received 22 points; and Chychuran (5 G, 15 A), at 20 points.

Vipers battle for 17-10 victory over Chandler

After an unexpected 10-day delay because of the rain, the Glendale Vipers returned to the lacrosse field and made a case as a contender for one of the top teams in Arizona this season.

Glendale (4-0) opened the game strong with a smothering defense and jumped out to a huge early lead before hanging on for a 17-10 victory over the Chandler Pumas March 25 at Thunderbird Paseo Park.

Leading 10-4 at halftime, the Vipers’ Teegan Williams, of Verrado in Buckeye, erupted early in the second half.

Williams scored three goals in the first five minutes, extending the Vipers’ lead to 13-4 with 6:21 left in the third quarter.

“When we got the big lead early in the second half, I pulled my starters and got some playing time for my younger guys,” Vipers head coach William Casey said. “We have about 11 guys who play year round that are really solid players, but we also have a lot of new kids and tonight we were able to get them some playing time.”

taking a pass from Ironwood’s Jacob Knippel and spinning around two defenders, firing a shot past Chandler goaltender Evan Doble. Three minutes later, Williams picked up a loose ball and cut across the front of the net before scoring again from the outside.

“He (Williams) was really strong to-

night and controlled the ball when he needed to,” Casey said. “He is playing very well right now and is one of the leaders of this team.”

the Cactus League and the Grapefruit League in Florida. The leagues have 15 teams a piece.

Contributing factors for spring training attendance include a team’s following and the size of the ballpark.

In contrast, Tempe Diablo Stadium, the league’s oldest and most intimate facility, has a capacity of about 9,500 and the Angels of Anaheim, like most other teams, don’t draw the same loyal throng as the Cubs.

Tempe Diablo also benefited from the league’s late season rally, with the Angels drawing back-to-back capacity crowds of 9,655 fans on March 15 for a game against the Diamondbacks and 9,693 on March 16 against the Cleveland Indians.

“It’s not too bad. We had four games in February. It’s been very early,” said Jerry Hall, manager of Tempe Diablo.

“I think we will have a strong finish.”

Diablo had somewhat less of a buzz this year because Shohei Ohtani, a twoway Japanese star, was in rehabilitation after arm surgery and was unable to play.

“We definitely would have gotten a lot more attention,” especially from Japanese media, if Ohtani had been able

picked up the ball and fired it into the back of the net.

“With the weather delays, we played a scrimmage last week so we make sure not to take off time and we try to stay fresh,” Casey said. “We have a lot of players who play all year long, and some have been playing since kindergarten, and it was showing early in this game.”

Chandler (0-4), which is struggling with injuries and has lost eight players to injuries, never stopped battling after falling down by nine. Casey began pulling his starters with six minutes left in the third quarter, when the Pumas started to battle back.

With 5:26 left in the third quarter, Chandler’s Cody Sampley picked up a loose ball and raced to the right sideline, from where he lobbed pass to Tanner Donaldson, who then fired a shot that slipped past Brosius.

“We are usually the team that starts a game strong, getting up by five or six goals, before our depth catches up to us and we lose late,” Chandler head coach Tyce Thielsen said. “When you

to take the field, Hall said. “It would have helped.”

Some Cubs fans seemed a bit surprised by the cooler weather in February and early March, but they were more than satisfied with the season after a long winter in the Midwest.

“We got here on Valentine’s Day and it was rainy and cold. Then, it started to change. I think this is the hottest day since we have been here,” said Bill Shannon, a longtime season ticket holder at Wrigley Field in Chicago who has been coming to Mesa for spring games for 30 years.

But Shannon and friends were not complaining and said they were enjoying their time in Arizona as usual.

“We will miss this beautiful weather in April and May,” he said.

He said it will be June until Cubs fans feel the sun’s warmth again at Wrigley.

Kerry Bonora, who has coming from Chicago to Mesa for Cubs games since 1996, said he likes Sloan Park even more than Hohokam Stadium, where he said the parking was tighter.

“I love Sloan. It’s bigger and it has better facilities for the Cubs,” he said.

“I think it’s beautiful.”

Goalkeeper Darcy Kuemper (24 wins, 19 losses, 7 overtime losses) has been strong in the net since Ranta’s injury. He has allowed 2.45 goals per game with a save percentage of 92.

Since the team has not appeared in the postseason since the 2011-12 season, it has shown the ability to make a run and get to the playoffs. The way this unit has played, with some strong runs and winnings streaks, the Coyotes are eager to make a return to the playoffs.

With an advertising tag that says the Coyotes are “scratching and clawing” for the playoffs, the team is focused on doing just that.

“That phrase, scratching and clawing, has resonated with the team and

the whole market,” Arizona Coyotes CEO Ahron Cohen said recently. “That is what this team is all about. It’s resiliency and fighting for every inch as well as playing with a chip on their shoulders.”

Given the playoff drought, General Manager John Chayka knows the team is headed in the right direction, as well as growing the sport of hockey in the team’s 22nd in Arizona and 16th in Glendale.

“I look at from what it would mean for just growing the sport of hockey in Arizona,” Chayka said.

“Obviously, since we last made the playoffs, we have had (Arizona resident) Auston Matthews be a number one pick, and there has been a huge explosion in youth hockey since. Plus, a lot of those young players have never experienced a NHL playoff game.”

This season, the Coyotes seem to have found a way to win close games.

Over their final five games, they may need to win four of the five, which could lead to the first playoff games at Gila River Arena since 2012.

Country singer Shari Rowe ‘Ridin’’ to the top

This spring has been a special time for Glendale country singer Shari Rowe.

She recently released her new single, “Night Ridin’,” and she performed as part of Celebrity Fight Night with the likes of David Foster, Barry Manilow and Brian McKnight.

She premiered “Night Ridin’” during Celebrity Fight Night.

“I’ve just believed in the song since we finished it,” Rowe said. “It captures such a really great feeling. We just love going to drives in the mountains or country. That’s been a favorite thing of mine. You literally feel like you have forever with the whole night with someone. The song really captures this.”

“The first time I recorded in a professional studio in Nashville was contemporary Christian music,” Rowe said. “I did that before I did country.”

She changed her focus to country music, although it’s still deeply rooted in her faith. In the end, Rowe said she is happy to connect with people on a musical level.

“Whether you’re leading worship or whether you’re just singing a fun country song, music has a way of taking people somewhere and it’s a very powerful tool,” Rowe said.

No matter where she performs, she keeps her hometown close to her heart.

“Growing up in Arizona for me was very special,” Rowe said. “We travel a lot these days, but we’re always bragging about Arizona.”

The Village at Arrowhead to host free music series

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The Village at Arrowhead Shopping Center will host 4FRIDAYS!, a free outdoor music series during the month of April. From 6 to 8 p.m. every Friday on the AJ’s Fine Foods patio, the weekly music series will feature a variety of artists.

The music series will kick off with the Priscilla Rose Band on April 5. One week late, the Hallelujah Blues Band will share its talents April 12. The McFadden Brothers will have their turn on April 19. Finally, Frosty and the Silver Tones will bring a fitting conclusion to the month-long series on April 26.

Student a semifinalist in GeoBee competition

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Glendale student Malik Johnson, a seventh grader at Desert Mirage Elementary School, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Arizona State Competition. The contest will be held Friday, March 29, at University of Arizona in Tucson.

This is the second level of the National Geographic GeoBee competition, which is now in its 31st year.

School GeoBees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took an online qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society.

The National Geographic Society

has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state GeoBees.

According to Malik’s teacher, Sabine Bachner, “We are extremely proud of Malik and his deep interest in geography. He is an outstanding student and is studying hard for the next level of competition. Geography is such a vital skill in our global society and

his knowledge will prepare him for a future career.”

This year, National Geographic increased the prize money for all state GeoBees.

State champions will receive a medal, $1,000 in cash, and other prizes, as well as a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the national championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters from May 19 to May 22. Students who come in second and third place will re-

Founded in 2015, real estate technology platform Faira was created with the idea of turning real estate into a transparent and efficient marketplace for both sellers and shoppers.

The platform makes a full range of services available to sellers online, including professionals like photographers, inspectors, agents and marketers. Houses can be searched for online or via app.

“Faira came from my experience with an over-complicated home sale,” said Kamal Jain, founder and CEO of Faira. “I realized how antiquated the traditional real estate transaction is and I saw an opportunity to not only modernize it but to save consumers a ton of money.”

He added that the company hopes to make the process for both home sellers and buyers easier.

“The founders and I were able to build a company that gives users every advantage of using an agent (listing on every searchable site, guidance and support) but for a huge savings,” Jain said. “Plus, we make the whole process easier and more modern with our automated platforms.”

Faira completes due diligence upfront so interested buyers can evaluate the home and quickly make an offer, saving hours of paperwork. Then, Faira analyzes and ranks offers for sellers.

Sellers can either approve or deny an offer with the push of a button. Faira offers support through closing, and offers tiers of service to support agents.

“The goal of Faira was to modernize the real estate process through cost savings – we can facilitate both sales and purchases without taking the same high commissions – as well as create a technological platform to expedite much of the transaction in a transparent way,” Jain said. “Third, 99 percent of our offers close and our offer rate is one fifth of the traditional industry.”

based on transparency with buyers.

“In fact, we are so confident of our platform that we ever offer a program in which we guarantee that if a buyer failed to close the home, we will buy the home at the same price the failed buyer had agreed to,” Jain said. “No, not at a discounted price, like most other competitors. We are the only company which is willing to buy a home at a price decided by others.”

The platform offers three separate ways to sell.

Faira Free is technology driven and gives users everything that is needed to sell a home. It is entirely free to the seller.

Faira One gives sellers easier online offers and adds a real estate agent to assist with the process. A 1 percent commission rate is taken.

“Our customers love the fact that they’re saving thousands when they sell,

with either Faira Free or Faira One,” Jain said. “Buyers who use our program get a chunk of change after the house sells, up to 2 percent cash back.”

Faira Premium personalizes service and guarantees online cash offers. Premium takes a 3 percent commission rate, but guarantees the highest online cash offer; at-home listing consultation and property assessment; and presentation, staging and repair recommendation.

Premium also adds upgraded photo options (3D, HD, aerial and video); weekly feedback and review; optional overseeing of vendors accessing the property; and a one-year warranty.

The reaction to Faira has been more favorable than Jain thought, with over 800 customers, mostly sellers, using the platform.

“The reaction from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re

currently in the process of producing more customer testimonial videos because people love the platform, and we want to share those experiences with everyone to increase the comfort level for those who may feel like they’re early adopters. This is a tried and true platform. The system works and saves people money,” Jain said.

As Faira enters the Arizona market, the company is focusing on spreading the word of its availability for home sellers and buyers, to help the process and save both money.

“We want people to know that not only is Faira an option, it’s the most lucrative option. We want to scream it from the rooftops that not only does it save money, but there’s so much knowledge and experience within our team to lead people to successful transactions. Ninety-nine percent of offers close on our platform,” Jain said.

Main Library holding Pineda named to music business summit WESTMARC board

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Local indie record label Fervor Records will hold a music business summit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown Street.

Featuring a consortium of experts who have risen through the ranks, experienced trials and errors, and worked with top players in the field, the summit gives participants a unique opportunity to learn from the best.

The summit is designed to arm musicians and anyone interested in a career in music (from public relations to producing records) with the knowledge required to make it in today’s industry.

Participants will learn about management, marketing and promotion, how to get music placed in film and on TV, and more.

Through his role on the organization’s board of directors, Pineda will represent his city.

Headquartered in Glendale, WESTMARC is a coalition of public, private and education leaders that is committed to the West Valley’s economic vitality and enhanced quality of life. Founded in 1990, the coalition membership is comprised of the cities of Avondale, Buckeye, El Mirage, Gila Bend, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Phoenix, Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise, Tolleson, Wickenburg and Youngtown.

WESTMARC’s board of directors represents all three sectors of its membership, through which it sets the strategic direction for the organization.

Currently serving his first four-year term on Avondale’s City Council, Pineda was elected in 2016. Prior to his time with the city, he served as a member, vice president and president of the Littleton Elementary School District’s governing board.

In addition to being on WESTMARC’s board of directors, Pineda currently serves on the Maricopa Association of Governments’ (MAG) economic development and human services coordinating committees. Whether you like fast food or good comfort food, we have you covered. But let’s start with a shout out to the vegans out there. Here’s the news!

First, Casa Terra is a new restaurant that specializes in Mexican- and Mediterranean-inspired “plant-forward cuisine.”

A product of Executive Chef Jason Wyrick, the downtown vegan restaurant features everything from tapas tacos to flautas, butternut squash tortellinis, and even churros for dessert.

Prices vary ($8-$15 for small plates, salads, soups and desserts; $20-$24 for entrees).

Beverages include sparkling water, organic teas, espresso and coffee.

Its design also has new décor and accent colors, zoned seating areas with various seating styles and comfort configurations, and lower lighting levels with pendant fixtures. Its contemporary exterior is based around glass and metal as well as a dual-lane drive-thru.

The Glendale McDonald’s will soon host two free events. From noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, is a grand reopening. Egg McMuffins and Big Macs will cost $1 and $2, respectively. Mountain Ridge’s school band and cheer team will provide entertainment at noon, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 1 p.m. Several weeks later, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, the location will host a Lego-themed event with Bonanza Educational tallest tower builds and $1.99 Happy Meals.

Finally, here’s an event for good measure.

The Arizona Department of Revenue will hold a business tax workshop from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 29, at the Glendale council chambers, 5850 W. Glendale Avenue. The workshop will cover transaction privilege tax basics for businesses, with topics including licensing and reporting, location-based reporting, tax rates, exemption certificates, exemption and deduction codes, added tax versus tax factoring, and calculating and reporting tax.
