This issue’s cover story hits way too close to home for me, which is why I wrote it. I am the face of Generation “Why?”—as in “why me?” (P. 10).

When I was working on my bachelor’s in 2008, I had the cushion of school to shield me from the real world. While the news was plastering headlines about the recession and how bad some people had it, I was immune. After all, I had grown accustomed to living on a shoestring budget in college—even if the small amount of money I did have was mostly furnished by my paid internship (I forgot those existed!) and my parents. How bad could it possibly be when the “real world” hit?

When I graduated in 2009, nothing could have prepared me for what was to come.

what I did wrong. But those “wrong” things were right, according to my parents, mentors, advisors and teachers. The landscape of the job market has changed dramatically, and even seasoned professionals are having a hard time keeping up.

I don’t say these things to be a pessimist.

I graduated into a recession, and with a journalism degree, a declining industry. But I did everything technically “right” in college. I studied. I got good grades. I had talent. I had internships. I made connections. No one was hiring, but before I graduated I was convinced I’d be the exception. I had a very charmed life up until that point. Why would this be any different?

I was not the exception. After moving in with my parents briefly, I was able to find a cheap apartment and landed my dream job at a local newsweekly. I bought a car and things were looking up. Four months later, I was back on the job search after a round of economic layoffs. That job search lasted around a year and a half as I meandered from freelance assignment to freelance assignment, until I wound up back here at my old internship stomping grounds, College Times, four years later. (This is home!)

Tempe Passes AntiDiscrimination Ordinance Jorge Salazar · College Times

ASU study finds habitual marijuana use in teens lowers IQ Ana Anguiano • College Times There are plenty of things you might regret from your teenage years. Reckless behavior and a lack of empathy is normal for teenagers and usually excused, seeing as mood swings and erratic behaviors all come at a time when the adolescent brain is still developing.

In fact, the changes the brain goes through in adolescence are so crucial that adding a substance like marijuana can throw it off completely and intercept with the development all together.

ASU professor Madeline Meier authored a study that followed a group of 1,037 children, who were born in 1972-73 in Dunedin, New Zealand, and followed them from birth to age 38 years. Their IQ was tested at age 13, before cannabis use, and again at age 38, after some study members had used cannabis for many years.

The study found individuals who started using cannabis once a week or more in adolescence and used it for years thereafter showed an average 8-point IQ decline.

Furthermore, quitting or reducing cannabis use did not appear to fully restore intellectual functioning among those “adolescent-onset former persistent cannabis users.”

According to the study, the IQ decline could not be explained by alcohol, other drug use or by reduced years of education among persistent cannabis users. These same individuals with persistent cannabis use were reported to have noticeable attention and memory problems in their everyday lives.

“Research on the harmful and beneficial effects of cannabis use is important because it can inform decisions regarding the medicinal use and legalization of cannabis, and the results of these decisions will have major public-health consequences,” Meier says.

Isaac W., who chose not to use his full name, tried marijuana for the first time when he was in the eighth grade and started using it more often in his first years of high school. But as he got older, he grew out of the habit and found he wasn’t comfortable with the side effects.

“I felt really unproductive and I worried about it affecting my memory and my intelligence,” Isaac says. “Who knows what could have happened. I’m forgetful like anyone else but I don’t think it’s really diminished me in any way.”

Unlike some teenage users who take their marijuana use into adulthood, Isaac says he rarely uses it now and would rather drink in moderation to have a good time. He says he has more of an aversion to it than a dependency now as an adult.

Arizona is one of the few states that have legalized marijuana for medicinal use, which makes this study all the more important.

“What isn’t possible to know from this study is what a safer age for persistent use might be, or what dosage level causes the damage,” Meier says. “After many years of decline among US teens, daily marijuana use has been seen to increase slightly in the last few years.

In 2011, for the first time, US teens were more likely to be smoking pot than tobacco.”

Although Governor Jan Brewer effectively vetoed SB 1062 on February 27, the damage was already done.

The controversial bill that some conservative groups argued was a necessary protection of their religious freedom was seen by the LGBT community as an excuse for state sanctioned discrimination.

If national media coverage is anything to go by, the LGBT community was not alone.

“Because of this thing put forward by certain members of our state legislature our state had once again gotten another national black eye,” Corey Woods, a Tempe City council member and Equality Arizona board member, says.

The City of Tempe passed a law that it sees as a step in the right direction. The Tempe City council unanimously approved an anti-discrimination ordinance that will enforce the protection of civil rights for members of the LGBT community.

“In this state, because of some of the laws, you can still technically openly discriminate against members of the LGBT community because of who they are,” Woods says. “And that is not acceptable.”

The ordinance prohibits employers, businesses and housing complexes from discriminating based on gender, race, religion, national origin, age, disability and military veteran status, as well as gender identity and sexual orientation.

“One of the things that we say all the time is we can’t necessarily stop how people think or what people feel in their hearts,” Woods says. “But when you come into the public sphere, when you come into the city of Tempe, everyone is going to be treated the same.”

Woods believes attitudes on equality for the LGBT community are rapidly changing, referencing recent polling which shows that 49 percent of Arizona voters support the state granting marriage rights to gay couples. Despite that, the struggle is not over, he says.

Isabelle Murray, president of ASU’s LGBT Coalition, says homophobia is still a very prominent factor in the college town’s culture.

“Even though this passed it doesn’t necessarily improve the climate,” she

– Isabelle Murray says. “A lot of LGBT students don’t feel comfortable walking down the street on Mill Avenue at nights and on weekends.”

Murray also notes that the antidiscrimination ordinance would have been a trivial effort had Governor Brewer not vetoed SB 1062.

“We need statewide and nationwide inclusive anti-discrimination policies,” Murray says.

Nevertheless, she says the turnout during the protests of SB 1062 shows that people in Arizona are passionate about LGBT issues.

“I think it’s really amazing to see people come together over these issues,” Murray says. “And I think that we need to maintain this sense of community.”

As for detractors that feel the protective measures for LGBT individuals are slighting to their religious freedoms, Murray says she feels they haven’t experienced much discrimination in their own lives.

“They say like ‘If people don’t want to serve us they don’t have to serve us,’ but have they ever experienced that?” she says.

“I think it’s important for people to realize that you have a right to your religious freedom but you can’t impose your religious beliefs on other people.”

To raise awareness on LGBT issues campus, the ASU LGBT Coalition will be hosting a Pride Week starting March 31.

They will be presenting fun and educational activities for students while advocating issues pertinent to the LGBT community, leading up to the National Day of Silence on April 11.

The Clintons Take ASU at Clinton Clobal Initiative University Jorge Salazar · College Times On the evening of March 21, ASU’s official Twitter read, “The Secret Service is getting in place. That can only mean the Clintons are appearing shortly #GCIU.” Things were about to get real. And if the roster of attendees is anything to go by, they did.

The Clinton Global University University (CGI U) hosted its yearly meeting at ASU’s Tempe campus over the weekend, bringing together nearly 1,200 attendees. The list of participants included students, youth organizations, entrepreneurs and celebrities (Jimmy Kimmel!) that convened to discuss pressing global challenges and develop solutions for them.

President Bill Clinton launched CGI U in 2007 per the success of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings world leaders to work together to work on global issues. CGI U is built to engage the next generation of these leaders from college campuses all over the world.

“At the first CGI U back in 2008 there were about 600 students,” said Hillary Rodham Clinton at the event’s opening plenary. “Today we have about 1,200 and they’re hailing from 270 schools, all 50 states, more than 80 counties, and together you have made 695 Commitments to Action.”

Commitments to Action are student-led initiatives that address challenges affecting college campuses, local communities and the world stage. Through their work with CGI U, students effect change in education, poverty alleviation, public health, environment and climate change, and peace and human rights.

“Because of Commitments to Action made at CGI U last year alone, nearly 50,000 people have gained access to healthcare and social services,” says the

former secretary of state. “More than 23,000 have received mentoring and training. Students have established more than 200,000 square feet of community gardens and so much more.”

Commitments have also included manufacturing wheelchairs for developing countries, the worlds first solar-powered DJ and e-learning apps for smartphones.

Perhaps a little dearer to ASU’s heart is a recent entry, which the former first lady was sure to spotlight.

“Two students from Arizona State will bring mobile technology training centers to low income neighborhoods in a nearby community,” Clinton says.

The students will use climate-controlled, recycled shipping containers filled with computers and high-tech manufacturing equipment to help other young people develop skills and experience they need for good jobs in today’s economy.

Students that attended the CGI U meeting were able to participate in workshops, network with peers and seek partnerships for their organizations. They were also able to sit in on plenary sessions moderated by President Bill Clinton, as well as Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.

These group discussions covered a variety of topics from the future of higher education, to the scaling up of existing programs that have already proven successful.

Hillary Clinton said it was appropriate the organization hosted its event at ASU as the opening session was titled The Age of Participation. She lauded the size of ASU’s student body as well as its plan to become carbon neutral by 2025.

“It is an institution committed to solving problems here at home, in the community and indeed around the world,” she says.

“So it is fitting that we would bring CGI U here.”

The TEMPEtations, ASU’s a capella group Jorge Salazar • College Times As an expert on the world of modern a capella (I’ve watched “Pitch Perfect” way too many times), I can safely say there’s nothing cooler than a group of performers taking popular songs and throwing them back at you sans instrumentals.

You don’t have to take my word for it though. Look no further than the TEMPEtations, ASU’s very own a capella group, for proof.

Founded in 2010, the ASU TEMPEtations have come a long way in a short amount of time. Just this past month, the group won third place in the 2014 International Collegiate Competition of A Capella.

“We’re a fairly new group,” says club president Samuel Joyce. “But I feel like we’re really forming our identity as an a capella group and getting recognized for our accomplishments.”

College Times: What kind of events do the TEMPEtations participate in?

Joyce: We participate in a wide variety of events. We’ve sung at festivals for other Arizona a capella groups and for state fairs. We’ve performed in front of the Tempe campus. And we’ve performed at competitions like the International Collegiate Competition of A Capella. It was the best moment we’ve ever had. It was definitely our peak in our a capella career because we took third place out of ten.

Has the popularity of “Glee” and “Pitch Perfect” raised interest in a capella groups?

I feel like for “Glee,” it has definitely reached out to audiences and has definitely increased the interest in singing. Once “Pitch Perfect” came out, people really became specifically interested in a capella singing. It has definitely increased the

popularity of it. It’s awesome because I feel like a capella is such an underappreciated genre of music that’s so fascinating because it’s just our voices.

What kind of songs do you perform?

We have sung a really wide variety of songs. For our competition we sang Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Zedd. We also sang songs from One Republic. But our very first songs were songs like “I Want You Back” from the Jackson 5 and “Free Bird”

by Lynyrd Skynyrd. There are other songs that I had never even heard of, which is nice because it’s a breath of fresh air. It lets me learn about new songs and genres of music.

Do you have to be a music major to be part of the TEMPEtations?

I’m a special education and elementary education major. None of our members are music majors. We all just have an interest in music and we all want to sacrifice our time to rehearse together for five hours a week.

Who should join your a capella group?

If you’re really passionate about singing and really passionate about learning, you should definitely audition for us. It’s an amazing experience to be in because we learn so much. Not only about music, but also about ourselves and what we’re capable of doing.

Finally, what TEMPEtations events do we have to look forward to?

We have our end-of-the-year concert on May 1. It’s free, so literally anybody can go.

The time and location are to be determined, but we would love for it to be a packed house. That will be out biggest event so far this semester.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy pizza, but even though this dish lacks tomato sauce and pepperoni, we promise it’s mind-blowing. To start, thinly chop two onions and sauté them in a large pan on med-high heat with butter until they caramelize to your liking. We used Pillsbury pizza dough, which needs to be prebaked it for 7 minutes at 400 degrees. Add a thin layer of your favorite jam or preserve (we used apricot) to the bread and top it with your onions and thin slices of brie. Bake it for another 8-10 minutes or until it is golden and the cheese is bubbly.

We hope you have all of these ingredients in your pantry because this dish is just as magical as it sounds. Make yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (we suggest going light on both) and dredge it in a beaten mixture of 1/4 cup milk and 1 egg. Cook it on a nonstick pan (or add some butter) and flip after 2-3 minutes. Serve with milk and enjoy!

There is something really satisfying about making your own chicken nuggets. These are also baked, so they’re good for you too! Cut your chicken breast into nugget sized pieces and let them marinate in 1/4 cup Sriracha for 30 minutes in the fridge. Set up a breading station with a beaten egg in one bowl and 1 cup panko bread crumbs with a teaspoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of garlic powder in another bowl. Dip the chicken into the egg, then bread crumbs and place them on a baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees and enjoy with your dipping sauce of choice.

Do Millennials Take Longer To Grow Up? Experts Say Yes, But It’s Not Their Fault.

Christina Caldwell • College Times With each new latte he serves up at his part-time Starbucks gig, John G. becomes more and more willing to compromise.

He’s willing to give up ideas of a dream job for a steady paycheck. He’s willing to swap promises of grandeur from teachers and mentors for an opportunity for an interview. He’s 23, and with a bachelor’s degree in economics, he’s overeducated and underemployed.

John, who asked that his last name not be used because it could impact his job search, is like many of his peers in the “Millennial Generation.” Those born between the early 1980s and early 2000s have had a tough time transitioning from school into the job market, particularly recent college graduates younger than 30.

For example, since John graduated from Arizona State University three months ago, he’s searched for full-time employment that has an opportunity for advancement; despite being qualified, he keeps coming up short.

“Before, I was looking for career-track programs, and now I’m at the point where I just want to get a job. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a career. I just need to get some money coming in.”

So he keeps serving those lattes, hoping one of the many job applications he puts out there will lead to a more prosperous future. And the sooner, the better. Student loan payments begin in June.

The End of the Yuppie Society has labeled John’s generation with a lot of negative terms—lazy, entitled, immature, materialistic, vapid, careless—

you name it. In fact, 2013 could be considered the year of the Millennial trend piece (just type “Millennial” into Google News for a barrage of articles). It’s one of the signs that our culture is attempting to wrap its head around who these supposedly selfish, text-addicted, YOLOscreaming young people really are, and how they fit into the adult world.

MTV, Bravo and other television networks might keep pumping out reality shows seeming to cement the stereotypes of “The Peter Pan Generation,” but Justin Jager, assistant professor of sociology at ASU’s T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, says the image of the lazy, entitled, immature young person has pretty much always been around.

While those perceptions don’t help, they’re nothing new.

“See, I don’t think they’re (lazier) at all. I think there’s some tendency for each generation to perceive the next generation—the generation that’s launching into adulthood—as lazy,” says Jager, who specializes in the transition from childhood into early adulthood. “Yes, I think there is a tendency for Millennials to be seen as lazy, but I don’t think it’s a phenomenon unique to Millennials. I think previous generations tend to see new generations as lazy, particularly when they’re adolescents or young adults.”

But there was a cultural shift between the previous generation and Millennials. It used to be that you simply graduated high school, found a career you enjoyed and worked your way from the bottom up, Jager says. While that can certainly still happen in select industries, Millennials were sold

As tuition rates skyrocketed, the ability to pay for college out-of-pocket was next to impossible, even with a part-time job. That meant taking on student loans. Going to college to get a good job meant delaying “adult” things like getting married, buying a house and having kids. So in a sense, Millennials really are more immature, but through no fault of their own, according to Jager.

“It’s really because it requires more education today to get a job, so the transfer into employment has been delayed, which makes their adolescence longer,” he says.

“So they are more immature than they used to be, but it’s not the stereotype. It’s not their fault they’re more immature. It’s a change in the labor market. It’s a change

in what is required nowadays to get a job vs. a generation ago…so you’re five, six years older than you were a generation ago before you’re an adult…as far as the key roles, like getting married, like being a parent, like being financially independent. It just takes longer than it used to.”

A less-than-ideal economic recession meant that the college graduates who entered the “real world” from 2008 through today weren’t able to achieve the career goals they were told would be available by attending college and getting a degree.

It’s safe to say that the yuppies, or young urban professionals, we saw in the ’90s during a more prosperous economy are a thing of the past. The same formula for success just didn’t work for Millennials, which leaves a lot of John G.’s to perform service-industry tasks like serving coffee, tending bar and cashiering while the threat of student loans looms behind their shoulders.

In fact, because college graduates are desperate enough to take just about any job, lower-educated workers are struggling to find work, even at the local fast food joint. According to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the percentage of bachelor’s degree holders between the ages 22 and 27 working jobs that don’t require their level of education jumped from 34 percent in 2001 to 44 percent in 2012.

Employers that would normally consider lower-educated workers now find themselves inundated with applications from desperate college grads. Guess who they pick? Now more than ever, your bartender or taxi driver is likely to have at least some college education.

The Eternal Intern Interning has never been glamorous work, even in better economic times, but it is a good way to get your foot in the door of your chosen industry. If you’re lucky, you’ll get some real world experience. If you choose the wrong opportunity, you’ll get coffee for mid-level management. But either way, you’ll get a solid experience to put on your resume.

Certain majors require internships before graduation, most of which will be unpaid. Like individuals during the recession, companies struggled, which meant paid internships were thrown out the window. Now interns simply work in exchange for college credit and the hope that the opportunity will lead to a job in the future. But of course, that’s not always the case—as Mike Brilliant knows all too well.

He will graduate from ASU in May with a degree in film and media studies, but technically he’s been finished with coursework since December. He took on several internships throughout his college career, and quit one because he felt his talents were underappreciated.

He interviewed with another once his internship was over, but the company chose another candidate.

Finally, he learned a lesson as he interned for a TV station in New York City.

He decided to make his face known, not to mention his work. When he went back to the company to say hello during a postinternship visit to NYC, they offered him an interview, which landed him his current job.

The gig is definitely entry level, he says, but his past work as an intern helps.

Not everyone is as lucky as Brilliant.

Internships, especially in large cities, are competitive. And with so many talented individuals willing to work for free, there’s little need to create entry-level positions for recent grads.

It has spurned a phenomenon called the “eternal intern,” where young people as old as 30 jump from internship to internship in hopes of finding that one paid job that sticks, even long after graduation.

John notes the lack of entry-level jobs in his area of study, economics. With his degree, he also understands that these problems expand to other industries.

“The current economic situation is mostly for people who are employed. And new jobs that are being created that are in the news, they’re retail and customer service positions,” he says. “With most of those jobs, you don’t need a college degree unless you’re in a management position, and even then, you can work your way up

You can be anything you want to be Lena Dunham, the 27-year-old creator and star of the HBO show “Girls,” has been called the voice of her generation.

If you watch the show, you’ll soon realize that voice is unsure of itself, yet somehow self-absorbed and naïve, head in the clouds and has no money of its own.

It’s the kind of voice that would lead Dunham’s generation to say, “Yeah, no thanks.” But the raw, deeply personal storylines are something they nevertheless are quick to attach themselves to.

The opening scene of season one, which debuted in 2012, shows Dunham’s character, Hannah, across the table from her parents, wolfing down pasta at a fancy New York City restaurant. She’s clearly hungry, physically and career-wise.

Before she can finish her plate, her parents decide to break the news. She graduated school, so they’re cutting her off financially. She doesn’t take the news well, of course, coming up with every excuse to play the victim.

It’s a conversation that’s happening everywhere between Baby Boomers and their offspring. Parents feel as if they’ve fulfilled their financial duty once graduation hits, and children feel, with all the struggles ahead of them, parents should at least give them a chance to navigate the “real world” they find themselves launched into.

Hannah’s attitude is that she’s done everything technically “right.” She went to college, she got good grades and pursued

her passions. Her parents told her she could be anything she wanted to be, and she believed that. But when reaching those career goals came at the toll of their bank account, Hannah’s parents were willing to let her find her own way, even if that meant doing something menial.

“Today’s young adults have a lot of flexibility. They can decide what they want to do and they can actually make that happen. But what happens…is that sometimes that doesn’t work out,” Jager says. “The only pathway to a career is to develop your own path to education and to get that career, but Millennials are very focused on that specific job.

That’s what you have to do to get a good job nowadays. You have to zero in on something a pursue it, and it takes four or five years to get a degree, or maybe a master’s degree, but you zero in on something and pursue it.

“The bad thing about that is that if you fail, your plan is very specific. And if you fail, there’s not really much of a backup plan, and that’s how you get this phenomenon, where it’s like ‘What now? I want to do this job. This is what I’ve been trained to do. I spent four years going to college to get this degree to do this job.’

And a generation ago, that wasn’t the case. They didn’t really zero in on a specific job, and so whether or not they got one job or had to do a different job, they didn’t really care, but this generation does care.”

They care about status. They care about careers. They care about themselves because they were told they can become into anything they want to be. They were raised to care, and so they do.

It’s yet to be seen whether Millennials will turn into another kind of “lost generation,” but with a current unemployment rate of 16.3 percent for youths between 16 and 24, and 56 percent of them living at home as of spring 2013, there’s a tough road ahead for parents and their adult children. Even if it was paved with good intentions.

Statistics that will make you feel like less of a post-grad failure Post-grad life is more difficult now than ever. Even though you have that fancy-schmancy degree, a slumping (but improving!) economy means you’re competing with seasoned professionals for low-level jobs and student loans means the threat of creditors is everlooming over your shoulder.

If you’re struggling post graduation, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re the norm.

These statistics will help prove that your professional working life (or lack thereof) is not an anomaly in this day and age.

36 percent of young adults ages 18 to 31 were living with their parents in 2012, according to a Pew Research Center poll. (That’s 21.6 million Millennials!) It was the highest percentage in over four decades, according to the poll’s analysis.

56 percent of the same young adults from the Pew Research Center poll still living with their parents were between

the ages of 18 and 24. 24-years-old is well past graduation age for most students seeking a bachelor’s degree.

16.1 percent of Millennials ages 18 to 29 were unemployed in July 2013, according to a jobs report by Generation Opportunity.

6 in 10 Millennials have a job, according to a Harvard study, but half of those are only part-time, meaning Millennials are not only unemployed, but also underemployed.

41 percent of Millennials are employed in positions unrelated to their field of study, according to Career Advisory Board study. That means that just because you got a degree in art doesn’t necessarily you’ll be the next curator at the local museum—at least not straight out of college.

Student Voices Missing Flight 370 is ripe for media speculation, conspiracy theories “All right, good night.”

These were the last words uttered from the cockpit before Flight 370 disappeared.

Flying as high as 45,000 feet to evade radar, any Lily Lieberman attempt to trace the airliner’s path has turned futile. Somewhere between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Beijing are 239 passengers, dead or alive, perhaps even at the bottom of the ocean.

Makes for a good movie, huh? And it probably will be when the dust has settled and we uncover the mystery of the vanishing plane. A Lifetime movie may be in the works. (Someone is likely to capitalize on this soon.)

As I’m writing this, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is still missing. Search crews from 26 countries are scouring the Indian Ocean for the Boeing 777 that has seemingly vanished into thin air.

Was it a hijacking? Did the plane crash?

Are the pilots responsible? Speculation

on why the plane is untraceable includes dramatic theories that rival even the most far-fetched JFK conspiracies.

CNN has nearly doubled its average daily viewership since the plane disappeared using the 24-hour news cycle to cover such riveting breaking news as the discovery of a flight simulator in the home of the pilot—something extremely common for a commercial airline pilot to have.

So why are we so obsessed? Our fascination with the missing plane stems from the unknown. In an age of technological advancement, we don’t know jack. The missing airline has ceased to be news. It’s a mystery story, and America can’t get enough.

At a time when George Orwell’s “1984” seems to be right on target, the idea that anything can completely fall off the grid is morbidly riveting. It’s hard to accept that in the age of information, we are still vulnerable. We don’t have all the answers.

A recent headline from satirical news site The Onion reads “Malaysia Airlines Expands Investigation To Include General Scope Of Space, Time,” an obvious jab at the media’s overarching sci-fi hypotheses and society’s fixation on the mystery of the airline.

Protect your two wheel investment with tips from State Bicycle Co. Ana Anguiano • College Times It has probably happened to you or someone you know, and it sucks every single time. We’re talking about bike theft, and it is a massive issue here in Tempe.

Mehdi Farsi, co-founder of State Bicycle Co., knows that when someone’s bicycle is stolen, it’s not as simple as just replacing any old object.

In order to support those who have had to deal with the loss of such a personal and sentimental possession, State Bicycle Co. will give anyone a $100 toward their bike purchase if they have had their bike stolen and bring in a police report.

“Everyone in our company rides and I would say most of us have had a bike stolen at one point or another. Tempe is really kind of a hot bed for bicycle theft with ASU being here, so bike theft is particularly bad in this area,” Farsi says.

“A lot of our customers really depend on their bicycles to get to and from class or work and some of them don’t have cars. When your bicycle is stolen it can really hurt, and we know that it’s important to get right back on one.”

State Bicycle Co. is all about customizing and personalizing your perfect bike, so they know all about the time, effort and money that can be lost.

So what should you do if your bike is stolen? Farsi recommends you file a police report as soon as possible.

“Anyone who gets a new bike should

write down the serial number. That will aid in the recovery of your bicycle.

From time to time police recover stolen property and if you have that serial number, you can get your bike back. If you don’t have it, it’s very difficult for anything like that to happen,” he says.

Farsi also points out that your bicycle is covered under your homeowners or renters insurance, depending on what your deductible is, or if you have a very expensive one.

But in order to prevent bike theft, Farsi says it’s crucial to get a U-Lock and use it properly. You do that by locking the front wheel to both the frame and a secure post for best protection. (It’s worth mentioning that State Bicycle Co. provides a free lock with the purchase of a bike when you show a student ID.) Farsi adds that if you live in an apartment or dorm, you should bring your bicycle inside if you can. If you can’t, avoid locking it up on the same place repeatedly, especially on campus. Theft can happen at any time and in any place, so being careful and vigilant is all you can do.

“If there are a hundred bikes at a rack, you’re going to go for the ones that are easiest to steal. No lock is fool proof.

Every single type of lock, given enough time, someone can break it, but the U-Lock is probably the hardest one to get through,” Farsi says.

“I worked here in college,” he says of his experience in the college town. “I used to run around these neighborhoods and I learned a lot of the things I wanted to in life here in Tempe.”

Geryol, an ASU graduate, credits the very same community that saw him grow during his college years as the reason for the bar’s current success.

He says the extra effort put forth in building relationships with customers and the community has fostered a sense of family in the neighborhood surrounding the eatery, which can only mean good business.

“Everyone says we’re the Cheers bar,” he says of Boulders local reputation. “I take a lot of pride in that.”

Geryol and the Boulders on Broadway team have gone through great lengths to make sure they’re the best neighborhood bar and grill, with improvements in venue infrastructure and the addition of a patio area that’s drawn a good number of clientele.

“We may not be the prettiest or most contemporary venue out there, but we do want to be able to give the best product we can with what we have,” Geryol says.

Geryol also puts staff through beer and culinary training programs so they can use their knowledge to provide tailored recommendation to patrons. Nevertheless, the road to where it stands today wasn’t easy.

“We had it really rough our first couple of years. We had no money, we were dead broke and had to keep feeding money into

the business,” Geryol says. “We didn’t know if we were going to make.”

While Geryol and his wife struggled financially, they never stopped giving back to the community where they were setting roots. Since opening its doors seven years ago, Boulders on Broadway has hosted a holiday dinner for the homeless and those from women’s shelters every November.

“It’s gotten so big now that we actually do it at the park next door,” Geryol says.

“And Apologia Church partnered up with us to help to run it because we end up needing so many volunteers.”

They also contribute to Meal Match, a program through which they are able to provide hundreds of meals a month to countries outside of the United States where hunger is a deadly problem.

“Honestly our heart right now is to give back to the local community,” Geryol says. “There are people in Phoenix that are starving. Some people don’t realize that while they live this pretty posh lifestyle in the city here, inner city people don’t have meals.”

To help, Boulders participates with the community in the United Food Bank’s canned food drive by donating and serving as a receptacle location. Even back when struggling with their own finances, Geryol says his wife reassured him that giving back to the community was the right thing to do.

“My wife said we just have to be faithful, help out the people around us and they’ll take care of us,” he says. “And it works.”

“We want to be known as a safe space. Butt Out is welcoming to everybody. With the recent SB 1062, not every business agrees with that idea.

We are welcoming of everybody,” Butt Out consultant Caleb Willow says.

Butt Out has locations in Tempe, Phoenix and Glendale, and owner Matt Berger says they have always put the comfort of their customers first, which is obvious right away when you enter a Butt Out shop. They play music, have plenty of seats to lounge in and the atmosphere is warm and inviting.

“We are going to treat you like family, I don’t care who you are,” Berger says. “[If SB 1062 had passed,] it would have been very bad for Arizona.”

Arizona Pride starts on April 5 and Butt Out will have a booth where they will be selling $20 vape kits and their locally made vape juices. They will also have T-shirts that read “We practice safe vape,” and a portion of the proceeds from every T-shirt is going to be donated to One N Ten, an organization that helps LGBTQ youth in Arizona.

“Anyone who comes in to any of my shops during Pride week with a ticket

from Pride gets 19.69 percent off their purchase, which is in commemoration of the Stonewall riots when gays stood up to intolerable treatment,“ Berger says.

Berger says his goal is long-term business and they have built an extremely loyal customer base because of it. When Berger calls them a family, he’s not exaggerating. In fact, there are over a dozen people with Butt Out tattoos on their body.

And for people trying to quit, the flavors Butt Out offers are especially enticing because of their complex and unique combinations. Butt Outs juices are made in Glendale, which gives them total creative control. Berger says even their most simple flavors have complex notes to keep them from falling flat.

They aim for clean tastes without an artificial aftertaste, which can make customers grow sick of it. They are currently working on new flavors like root beer float, strawberry milk, English toffee, and peach cobbler to name a few.

“Our main goal is to make sure people are happy with the shop, happy with vaping and don’t go back to smoking cigarettes. We have a very high success rate and a very high retention rate of our customers,” he says.

We can respect that. However, the best part about Diaz is that he is a stoner with a heart of gold that just happens to have a lifetime of crazy stories from growing up in New Jersey. Diaz will be performing along with his talented pal, Ari Shaffir, at Tempe Improv, and we can’t wait to see what he’s going to share.

College Times: Your fans must know a lot about you and your life from your podcasts and stand-up.

Diaz: Here’s the deal: I’m 51 years old and I did movies, television, and nobody talked to me—and then the podcast generation started. I started talking about my youth and the things I did when I was crazy.

I hang out with two 25-year-olds and they are very conservative. At 25, you know what I was getting ready to do? I was getting ready to go to prison. I had done a semester and a half of college. When they say to me “I’m tired,” I look at them and go, how can you be tired? At 25 I didn’t sleep. I really didn’t sleep. I think I used to sleep maybe three, four hours a night.

At that age, God knows what I was on by midnight. God knows.

What is it like to perform for a drunk audience versus a stoned audience?

I’ll tell you what, when people are stoned

they keep their mouths shut. They just stare straight ahead and they’re scared people might know their stoned. When people are drunk, they want to yell and scream. I was a stoner way before the medical marijuana thing. But as a matter of fact, I haven’t smoked pot in 31 days.

I just stopped. I’m smoking a vapor pen and eating a pot cookie from time to time because I got tired of breathing heavy during jiu jitsu. I feel a lot better.

How did you get into jiu jitsu?

I’m surrounded by it. My friends are all in it. I took a couple classes and I fell in love with it. I was really out of shape, so it’s been a struggle. I’m a dad, I do a podcast, I go on the road, I try to write a book—so if I go to a class once or twice a week I’m happy. I wanted to show people that at any age you can do whatever the f*ck you want.

Do you have any fun memories of Tempe?

Let me tell you something, I’ve been going to Tempe since 1984. A lot of my buddies from Jersey went to school down there.

I went there when Tempe was Indians smoking mushrooms in tepees. I like Tempe. I saw a lot of craziness down there in that nice white town.

The search for Arizona’s Funniest Comedian proves Arizonans can compete with the big guys Claire Cleveland • College Times It’s time to recognize that Arizona is a thriving comedy community. The Arizona’s Funniest Comedian contest is set out to do just that.

The state that started comics like Steve Allen, David Spade, Greg Proops, Garry Shandling, Robert Schimmel and more will now be recognized as the home of the up-and-coming comedian that wins the Arizona’s Funniest Comedian contest.

The first of the semi-finals round for the contest will take place at Stand Up Live on Sunday, March 30. This show gives the average guy or gal a chance to flaunt their best routines in front of the country’s most experienced club bookers and locals looking for a good laugh.

“The best part was doing prelim shows in Tucson. It was really cool seeing comics who are not at clubs regularly. It is always so cool to see brand new talent,” says contest manager Brad Ostrow.

Over 150 Arizonans submitted their five minute clip for a chance to compete.

A lucky few were chosen to move on to the preliminary rounds, which consisted of 15 to 18 people a night doing five minute sets at either Tempe Improv, Stand Up Live or Tucson’s Laffs Comedy Caffe.

“We wanted to do something for the comedy scene—create an avenue to let [comedians] perform and introduce them to the comedy club,” Ostrow says. This contest, which is modeled after the Florida’s Funniest Comedian competition, allowed any and every person who had a five minute clip to enter.

Los Angeles and New York are the

sought after destinations for upcoming comedy talent, but Ostrow says Phoenix shouldn’t be underestimated.

“Phoenix is a great thriving community.

It’s surprising. There are more people and talent involved in Phoenix than people expect,” Ostrow says.

The competition awards participants with more than just the title of Arizona’s Funniest Comedian, which gives comedians a chance to break into the spotlight and get noticed. First place winner will receive one week’s worth of shows at all of the participating clubs, including stints at the two original Florida clubs and a guest spot in Los Angeles. Second place is pretty a sweet gig too, with a one week showcase at a local club of the second place holder’s choosing. Third place, with our favorite prize, is a special ribbon made of Lycra.

There’s also a college competition.

Student hopefuls with the best talent will be hand selected and awarded a professionally videotaped set (an expensive process) and have entry expenses paid for college showcases across the country.

Ultra-fresh trends for Spring 2014 Lily Lieberman • College Times The crop top still reigns supreme this season, but pair it with a wide-leg trouser and a holographic clutch and you’ll look like you were plucked fresh off the runway.

But don’t go burning last season’s staples, though. Items have a way of coming back in style. Check out the plethora of decades incorporated in Spring 2014’s hottest trends.

White wide-leg pant: The wide-leg pant has teetered in and out of style since bellbottoms hit the scene in the ‘70s.

Denim just won’t cut it anymore. Trade in your blue jeans for a white cotton trouser and instantly revive the look. Add a pastel point-toed pump in mint or blush and a fringe bag for added retro flair.

Tall gladiator heels: Because what’s sexier than a Jesus sandal? One with a stiletto, of course. The roman-inspired flat gets a twist with knee high latticing and metallic leather. It’s a bit flashy, but hey, how do you think the Romans created an empire? On a side note, Italy is still the fashion capital of the world.

Tea-length skirt: Fashion mags are getting awfully specific about their skirt lengths these days. The Tea skirt—between a midi and a maxi—is the new “it” piece this season. Try it in a full-bodied style of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Nab a Kennedy in this Jackie O inspired piece.

The shift blouse: The Michelle Obama of t-shirts, this blouse exudes sophistication and class. The boxy shaped shirt has sleeves that hit just above the elbow, and a hip-grazing hem. Look for bright colors, bold prints and sheer fabric across the

3D Detailing: It’s like pop art but for clothing. Sequin embellishments and flowered embroidery add a youthful element to a conservative pencil skirt.

There’s no need for special glasses. The use of 3D printing by top designers gives the illusion of life to floral prints.

Neon fringe: The trend that won’t die is showing up on everything but eyewear this spring. The newest fad? Leather and suede fringe in REALLY bright colors. This trend calls for a neutral outfit and a wild personality.

Loungewear gets a facelift with a pair of strappy kitten heels and a boxy midriffbaring top. Don’t go busting out the polar bear sweats that makes the boyfriend cringe, though (guilty as charged). Keep it to neutral colors and low-key patterns for a no-fuss, super luxe look.

Jorge Salazar • College Times It’s safe to say that 17-year-old Arcadia High School student Matt Peterson is one of Miley Cyrus’s biggest longtime fans.

An admirer since the entertainer’s Disney Channel debut as Hannah Montana in 2006, Peterson has followed Miley’s career from partying in the U.S.A. to twerking with teddy bears on stage.

After first meeting the singer in 2009 on the “Johnjay and Rich” radio show, Peterson decided the next step was to invite her to his high school prom in a video that received media attention worldwide.

Although Miley couldn’t make it to prom, she did invite Peterson back and onstage during her recent Phoenix show. We caught up with Peterson, who gave us the lowdown on the whole affair.

been planning the prom for the last year. I knew that I wanted to ask someone different. I couldn’t just ask anyone and I felt that she was the only person worthy of it.

What was it like leading up to the concert? How did you prepare?

It was crazy. I didn’t know how to prepare because I didn’t necessarily know what was going to happen. I didn’t know I was going on stage or anything, which I think was better because I wasn’t over thinking it. There wasn’t much besides trying not to freak out and practice not crying. That was the one thing—I didn’t want to cry, so I’m happy I didn’t.

What was the most memorable part of the show for you?

I think definitely “Adore You” was the most memorable part. I was just jamming out the whole time. It doesn’t even feel real that I was up there. I wasn’t even nervous, which I thought

was the weirdest part. I was just taking it all in.

Of all the different eras of Miley (Hannah Montana, Can’t Be Tamed and Twerking Miley), which is your favorite?

I think the one she is right now. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her and she just puts herself out there.

That’s something I really respect and something that I tried to do with my video.

Aside from still being a Miley fan, what are you plans for the future?

My dream is to go into broadcast journalism. This whole experience has been so cool, just getting exposed to media in a way that I never would have before. My other idol, who I would love to be, is Ryan Seacrest. I got to talk to him on the phone because of this whole thing. It’s been cool to have that happen and have those doors be open.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Atlanta’s Black Lips in action. They’ve been kicked out India for making out on stage and they toured the Middle East during the height of the Arab Spring because, why not?

As natural born performers, they literally let go of everything they’ve got on stage. It’s totally normal for their bodily fluids to end up on the crowd, but that’s part of the fun. Their newest album, Underneath The Rainbow, is proof the band doesn’t need to be so animalistic on stage, they just want to be. We caught up with singer-guitarist Cole Alexander to chat about friends, vomiting on stage and rolling with the punches.

College Times: What was it like having the ATL Twins co-direct your video for “Boys in the Wood?”

Alexander: We’ve been friends with the ATL Twins for a while. Riff Raff introduced us.

We ended up becoming better friends with the ATL Twins and Riff Raff just because they lived in Atlanta. They were kind of messing with fashion and film and stuff so we said they should do the video for the song since it’s kind of about kids who maybe grew up in a redneck environment. I thought they would be able to do some great casting since they know a lot of characters in Atlanta.

Tell us about the shows being scented.

Yeah, we’re trying to attack all senses, not just sound and sight, so we decided to add smell into the equation. A lot of times smells can unlock memory or promote future memories. We’re just trying to do more than just give somebody music or a music video.

We had a list of smells. We wanted something earthier, but not like a potpourri. Like a cedar or a human musk or something like that.

At FYF Fest, we tried using human pheromones in the concert, and they were male pheromones to like, possibly excite the women, but it smelled like dirty locker room to me and I vomited like all over the stage.

Trunk Space’s 10 year anniversary is the perfect time to get into the downtown scene Ana Anguiano • College Times For the past 10 years, Trunk Space has been a safe and encouraging place for artists to not only express themselves, but test the limits of their creativity. The colorful walls inside 1506 Grand Avenue in Phoenix have been witness to hundreds of shows and performances, all of which were open to people of all ages.

Owners Stephanie Carrico and JRC both have day jobs and it’s no secret that Trunk Space isn’t the most lucrative of ventures, but the fact that it has lasted 10 years is a testament to them, their volunteers, and the music community as a whole.

To celebrate their anniversary, Trunk Space is putting together The Indie 500, a 10 day festival that will run from March 30 through April 8, with over 50 artists.

But more than a cool music festival, The Indie 500 is a family reunion. Bands that have played a part in their 10 year history are coming back to play and celebrate.

“I had this idea a couple of years ago and it was kind of a joke, but I thought it would be cool if we did a fest called Indie 500 and try to have 500 songs.

We decided to do it for our 10 year anniversary, one night for every year we were open,” Carrico says. “I really wanted to include as many people that have

supported us over the year as possible and really span back to the beginning.”

And soon Trunk Space will be air conditioned, which is a reason to celebrate all on its own. The venue started an Indiegogo campaign earlier this year to raise funds for the music festival and a new AC unit. With the help of friends and several large contributions from people like Matt & Kim and Andrew Jackson Jihad, The Trunk Space smashed their goal of $15,000.

The air conditioning will also aid in the next chapter of Trunk Space. Sam Clark, the owner of Lo Fi Coffee and The Nile Theater, is going to bring a crew and run Trunk Space as a coffee shop during the day, leaving the nights open for their regular art and music shows.

The cool down will also help Trunk Space survive the brutal Arizona summers, which have been known to make things pretty weird. There is even the awesome story of one-man-band Quintron darting outside to vomit at least twice during a particularly hot summer set. But if there’s one man who never minds the heat, it’s Treasure Mammal’s front man Abe Gil. “The environment [at Trunk Space] is so comfortable and even though it’s everything goes, it’s a place where people can talk about ideas and criticize ideas and be there for each other and

talk about goofy shit or whatever. It’s a good meeting place for creative people to exchange ideas and talk about what’s going on in their lives,” Gil says.

“Everything goes” is probably the best way to describe Treasure Mammal shows, and for their tenth anniversary show, Treasure Mammal not only drove a grocery cart scooter around The Trunk Space, but administered a haircut as well.

“All ages venues are so important, especially in those early teen years.

There’s one show that you see that can change your whole life and your perspective on life. It might make you want to be a painter or a musician,” he says.

It’s hard to really gauge the scope of The Trunk Space’s impact on the Phoenix music scene as a whole, but on a one-onone basis it’s easy to see just how much The Trunk Space has impacted those around it.

“My wife and I got married at The Trunk Space. JRC married us. We had our baby shower at The Trunk Space. They’ve been everything to us. We opened our first business next to The Trunk Space.

They’ve been a big inspiration and a cornerstone in my family’s life,” Liam James T. Murtagh, owner of Braggs Factory Diner and frontman of Liam and the Ladies, says.

of the lucky 24 individuals who actually have a Trunk Space tattoo on their body, a sign of what it means to be on the inside looking out. But everyone who steps inside The Trunk Space knows that they’ve entered a place that always looks from the inside out.

Being a part of the Phoenix art scene for 10 years gives The Trunk Space crew a bit of perspective when it comes to what Downtown Phoenix is and isn’t.

“Over the years I’ve seen a lot of people come down here and want to be a part of it, and every now and then someone thinks they can save downtown.

That makes me crazy. It doesn’t need saving. It’s already here. Be a part of it. Don’t try to change it. Help it grow,” Carrico says.

To which JRC adds, “This place doesn’t need fixing. It just needs more. Come be a part of the more.”

Local boy Dylan Pratt gets his big break courtesy of Neko Case Lily Lieberman • College Times A throwback to a bygone era, Dylan Pratt’s record, Beg For Fire, is like climbing into a favorite chair with a novel, the smell of cigarettes leaking into the room.

With haunting melodies and soothing lyrics, the album plays like a lullaby. Quiet in manner and bold in character, Pratt is too humble for his own good. With two shows in April opening for Grammynominated artist Neko Case and several new songs in the works, this Phoenix-based singer-songwriter is making a name for himself. Embarrassed of his newfound recognition, Pratt looks at the advantages of being a musician more as a nuisance than a perk, and refuses to admit his name might warrant an autograph.

Pratt talked to College Times about his biggest break yet.

College Times: What are your musical influences?

Pratt: I grew up listening to Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Lately I’ve been listening to Radiohead, Thom Yorke and Fleet Foxes.

How would you describe your sound?

It’s a bit singer-songwriter-ish. It definitely comes influenced from that vein of songwriting. But I like to try different things. I don’t just want to be known as a folk singer.

What are you spinning on Spotify?

The Bad Plus, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald.

Lots of oldies. There’s a lot more power and weight in their voices. I believe them when they describe their relationships or pain in their songs. It just sounds more clear.

Where were you when you found out you’d be opening for Neko Case?

I was with a few friends when I got the email and yelled and laughed. It was pretty surreal. I started working with a manager about six months ago and a family friend works with her. I got an email from my manager that said ‘I hope you’re available, I booked these.’ She was nominated for a Grammy this year. It’s wild.

How are you preparing?

I’m very overwhelmed. I’m glad it’s booked far in advance so I don’t have a heart attack. Normally I make it worse and I get to the venues way too early. If that’s a way of getting prepared, that’s the way I do it. I just sit and wait.

Has anyone asked for your autograph?

Can I say no? Yes they have. It’s humbling and weird.

Do you think you’ll ever get used to it?

I hope not.

What type of audience are you most receptive to?

I don’t mean to be rude, but probably a listening one. I don’t much like ruckus-y bars. But you’ve got to do those gigs.

Sometimes the most satisfying shows are the ones where they start out ruckus-y and end up listening.

“Babe, she’s totally staring at me again,” whispered Jason, visibly uncomfortable as his ex-girlfriend kept gawking from the corner of the crowded club. He had slammed four jägerbombs in the last ten minutes, so his whisper was more of a loud slurring hidden behind a sweaty palm.

Kelly tried not to gag as the putrid smell of liquor and RedBull invaded her nostrils.

She was considerably shorter than Jason, so every time he opened his mouth she had to fight the urge to puke up her last margarita as the fumes wafted across her face.

“She’s so obsessed with me,” he chortled, face flushed from all of the fist pumping he had participated in over the last hour.

Kelly tried to hide the mischievous smirk creeping through her face with the margarita glass she held as she remembered the night before. After weeks of recon work, she had finally cracked her boyfriend’s phone password.

At first, rage flamed through her petite 5 foot frame when she noticed all of the text messages her bae’s former conquest had flooded his inbox with. Nevertheless, Kelly was nothing if not creative.

She had taken Jason’s blackout after a beer pong tournament as an opportunity to wreck a bit of havoc on her nemesis’s psyche. She texted the tall brunette throughout the whole night pretending to be the meathead that spent the rest of the evening praying to the porcelain gods.

Blondes in cheetah dresses definitely had more fun.

Kelly was about to begin formulating

the next step in her plan of total brunette annihilation, but was suddenly distracted when the DJ began blasting “Summertime Sadness.” It was nearing the end of winter, but she was not deterred in twerking to the iconic jam.

“Yaassss!!!” she shrieked as the beat picked up. “This is my song!”

Her joy was short-lived as a camera flash temporarily blinded her. She glared in the direction of the offending light to find Jason’s ex surrounded by a gaggle of girlfriends making duck lips at their phones.

Kelly rolled her eyes at the display. They were pale enough as it was and anybody that had taken Selfies 101 their freshman year knew the flash did nothing but wash a subject out.

“Amateurs,” she scoffed, slipping Jason’s cell phone out of his back pocket stealthily.

She opened his Instagram and refreshed the feed, finding the ex-girlfriend’s latest post at once.

“Living with my ladies? Hashtag live?” she sneered. “More like hashtag DIE!” An evil glint shined in her eyes as she double tapped on Jason’s former flame’s photo. The effect was instant as slurred shrieks of victory carried over to her section in the club. She followed the action with a text message.

“Meet me by the entrance,” it read. Kelly cackled.

Minutes later, the brunette stumbled like a baby horse taking its first steps at the front door of the club. She scanned the street for any sign of Jason while trying to control the drunken haze glossing over her eyeballs. It was the staccato vibration of her phone that knocked her out of her reverie.

It was a new message from Jason.

“It wasn’t a good selfie – xoxo Kelly.” ecollegetimes.com

Miranda Lambert is ready to blow the roof off Country Thunder Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Getting ready to promote her forthcoming album Platinum, country star Miranda Lambert is giddy about performing at Country Thunder at 9 p.m.

Saturday, April 12.

“There’s just something different about performing in the mix of fellow musicians than a normal tour show,” Lambert says about Country Thunder. “They’re bringing as many country artists together as they can to simply rock it out on stage and just have one massive party with our fans.

Who wouldn’t look forward to that?!”

College Times: I absolutely love the album cover for Platinum. It’s a beautiful photo. Tell me about the title. I understand it’s the name of a song. Any deeper meaning?

Lambert: It’s all about my lifestyle. My wedding ring, my Airstream, my hair and even one of my favorite beer is platinum.

Platinum is also a song on the album and when thinking of what to name the album, it’s what fit the best.

What was the songwriting process like for Platinum? Did you do any interesting co-writes?

To me there are all interesting co-writes… surprises? Maybe not. Some songwriting sessions come together naturally because the writers are friends of mine and we hang out and suddenly there is a song written. When preparing for an album, finding the time to write is the most difficult thing, so sometimes writers come on the road for a weekend, or I come to Nashville for a couple of days here and there.

Will you be previewing any new tracks at Country Thunder?

I’m not sure yet. We will, of course, be doing Automatic, the new single, but I don’t really decide until closer to the shows exactly what songs are going to make the set list. Kinda keeps it fresh and exciting!

I understand you have a duet with Carrie Underwood coming out soon.

How was that to work with her?

It was amazing! I was a nervous wreck when asking her about doing the song with me and then a nervous wreck again the day she came in the studio to sing on it. She’s an unbelievably amazing vocalist. The day she was in the studio, she wanted to do some ad-lib, then she started singing. It always blows me away.

I’ve read in other interviews that you’ve called Platinum your best album yet. What makes this album so special?

Two things I have always stuck by throughout my career—going with your gut and being yourself. I feel like I’ve continued to do that on this album. I think it’s my best album so far because it captures where I am today and for me, that’s what music is about and expression of your own slice of life.

Multihyphenate entertainer Ice-T may have swiped “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business” moniker from James Brown.

Ice-T, who has a vacation home in Chandler, has his hands in books, and has delved into documentaries, television and movies.

But now it’s time for his original love— music. Ice-T and his thrash metal band Body Count are set to release a new album, Manslaughter, this year. The act will debut tracks from the collection during KUPD’s U-Fest at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Quail Run Park in East Mesa. Body Count concerts are few and far between, but the U-Fest show is the kickoff to a major musical campaign.

“We’re very excited about it,” Ice-T says.

“We’ve only done one show this year. This is really just the first show of a summer run we’re doing with Body Count.”

By all accounts, Ice-T says, Manslaughter is receiving rave reviews.

“A lot of people are saying it’s our best work,” he explains. “I was very motivated to do the record. It sounds really good. We have a great producer. We’re signed to a good label. I think we’re going to come out and make a lot of noise. You’ll see it first at this concert.”

College Times: I’m a huge fan of “Law and Order: SVU.” I started watching it maybe 11 years ago and was hooked immediately. To what do you attribute its staying power? What do you see for the future of the show?

Ice-T: I think the key to “Law and Order” is it’s a whodunnit at the end of the day.

Every show works independently. It’s fun. It has a twist and an end. I think people enjoy trying to figure out how the show is going to come out. It’s the kind of show you don’t have to watch in order. It’s what they call a “procedural drama.” I think sex crimes is something that really touches people seriously. A lot of people have been affected by stuff like this, so it strikes a chord. As far as what I think the show’s going to go, it’ll be on as long as the viewers are there.

How have you seen Fin evolve on “SVU?” I don’t really think he’s evolved. As the show’s gone on, people have become more

familiar with him and the way he operates.

With the new detectives in the squad room, Fin has become the most senior detective.

Mariska (Hargitay, “Olivia”) now is a sergeant. You might see Fin take on more of a leadership role. As far as how he’s evolved, not much. He’s pretty much the same guy from the time he showed up on the show.

You have to be the busiest man in entertainment, between “SVU,” Body Count, authoring a book and “Something from Nothing.” It must be a very delicate balancing act.

Not really. I usually only keep one or two projects going at once. No more than two projects going simultaneously. I did “Law and Order” and the “Art of Rap,” or I may do “Law and Order” and Body Count. I’ve never really balanced three, if it is three at the most, it might seem like it’s a lot because the release dates will happen at different times. I can’t really concentrate on more than two things at a time.

Why did you want to write a book and make the documentary?

I think at the end of the day, I’m an artist.

Artists create art. There are a lot of different ways of doing it. I’m one of those kinds of people, if I have free time I want to create something—fix up my cars, decorate my house, decide I want to tell a story. I’m a brainstorming kind of cat. I’ll sit back and say, “Man, I want to do that.” Fortunately, I’ve been relatively successful at doing these things. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think anybody cared.

Sleigh Bells is a creative match made in noise pop heaven Ana Anguiano • College Times Sleigh Bells pack an obscene musical punch despite only consisting of singer Alexis Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller.

The way they work together to create gritty, noisy pop is pretty impressive. They were Internet darlings before landing their music in ads ranging from TV shows and movies to Apple and Target commercials.

Their latest album, Bitter Rivals, was only released last fall but the band is already looking to the future. Miller says the shows they have been playing with this album are the best in their careers, but Sleigh Bells is ready to start recording a new album. Catch them at Crescent Ballroom before they disappear into the studio later this year.

College Times: What’s shaking, man?

Miller: I am in New Orleans! I’m in heaven.

I’ve been here for two days; we’re shooting a video and playing the BUKU Festival. I probably put on six pounds since I’ve been here but it’s worth it. I’m from Florida, but both my parents are from New Orleans, so I’ve got a lot of family, a lot of blood here.

You mentioned you are already working on new music, when do you find time to write?

I can write and record pretty much anywhere and everywhere, and I usually do. I never really stop. I kind of feel like I’m that guy. I’m only as good as whatever good music I’m working on, so I’m constantly working. It’s the thing that I love most anyways, so I do it as much as I can.

At what point do you share that with Alexis?

All the preproduction stuff I record on the road is super rough. They’re really kind of vague, abstract ideas that will take shape over the course of a few months.

Once they sound decent and they’re not embarrassing, I show them to Alexis. I record a bunch and most of it is terrible, but the best of it we keep.

She usually has ideas immediately on the spot, and then she lives with it and works on stuff. I’ll send her a word file with a ton of lyrics and not a lot of guidance and tell her to chop things up, edit, do what she likes, whatever she’s comfortable with.

I just try to get out of the way and not interfere too much. It works for us.

What’s her initial feedback like?

That’s actually my favorite part of the process now—getting the first round of ideas from her because most of my melodies are just sort of... I don’t know if I graded them I could give them a C-. It’s just not my strength. I write a ton of music but melodies are sort of foreign to me.

For Alexis, she hears melodies on top of everything. Going through the day, if she’s walking on the sidewalk kicking a rock, she probably has a melody for it. It’s usually pretty incredible.

Posamentier Rated R Opened March 14 For Doug Varney (Sam Rockwell), life as a pharmacist just isn’t enough. He’s out to get a few thrills, even if it comes at the expense of everyone he loves and holds dear.

His wife is distant and obsessed with working out. His son is disengaged and in trouble for rubbing feces on other students lockers at school. Elizabeth (Olivia Wilde) is a tempting substance abuser that takes him over the edge of sanity.

Elizabeth enters Doug’s life just when he least expects it. She is a trophy wife in a torrid affair with pharmaceuticals, and now Doug, who begins mixing pills for the two of them until life gets a little tricky. Doug gets investigated by the feds, and Elizabeth wants Doug to murder her husband.

While the film is timely with rampant pharmaceutical use in the average American home, it doesn’t go far enough

to present a story worth seeing. The themes are repetitive, which makes for tiresome viewing. I was anxiously awaiting a truly funny or really awe-inspiring emotional moment that just never came.

The story centers mainly on Doug’s transformation from put-upon loser to swaggering cool guy, which unfortunately gives the movie a misogynistic feel. Doug gets more out of life by having an affair while everyone else around him pretty much stays the same.

The only moment that brings Doug down to a humble level is the short reconnection he has with his son.

Unfortunately that moment came when the two became involved with vandalism, even at Doug’s own expense.

The film’s humor, along with Jane Fonda’s narration, gave the movie a very off-putting tone. One moment you find yourself laughing at a sad marriage and possibly sadder affair. The next, Fonda tells us about the transformation of a man in a voice better suited to romantic love story.

At the end of the film, after an unexpected death, Fonda appears on screen with a disconcerting comment about feminine hygiene products that is not only confusing, but also tied back into that fun misogyny theme.

Overall, “Better Living Through Chemistry” is nothing to get excited about. And if you happen to be particularly sensitive to trite maledominated films, then I would advise avoiding this film.
