Digital 4 Good Boulder Creek senior Tag Herr wins state award for Student Government publicity By Emma Suttell

In a world consumed by social media and the internet, it can sometimes be difficult to find the positive amidst the chaos.

For senior Tag Herr, spreading positivity on social media is a part of his personal life as well as his academic career. As student body publicist, Herr runs @bchsjagnation, an Instagram account dedicated to informing students about schoolsponsored events.

This year, Herr has taken the initiative to go beyond simply advertising school events and has crafted several series of posts that encourage “World Kindness Week” and “Wish Week” (a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Arizona and several other special events).

In late January, Herr was recognized at the state conference for the Arizona Association of Student Councils for his work on social media. A team from the #ICANHELP campaign, a program aimed at targeting negative online activity, attended the conference and awarded Herr with the #DIGITAL4GOOD award.

“Their goal is to ‘delete’ negativity on social media,” Herr says. “#ICANHELP first came to our spirit conference in the fall and talked about how teenagers at different schools are developing programs to encourage a positive atmosphere. I knew I wanted that.”

Brought onstage in front of thousands of other student government members from around the state, Herr was introduced and presented with the award. He also found that he had received the most nominations out of the entire state, several of which came from peers at Boulder Creek.

“A woman at the conference shared (my work) with her marketing team bosses. They were saying that it’s crazy what I’ve been doing because I’m only in high school,” Herr says. “(Her bosses) said they would pay someone to do the work I am doing now.”

Herr’s work even impressed large tech company representatives from Google, Facebook and Twitter. When given his award, he was told that his work could earn him a publicity position at a well-known company. Throughout the week, Herr also manages the social media for the award-winning Boulder Creek Choir Program. His work has led to hundreds of ticket sales and recognition from other choir programs in the state.

“I like getting to be the face of the program and being the person that people associate with it,” Herr says. “I want to make sure that whenever I speak on behalf of (student government or choir) on social media I am professional because, in a way, I am the face of the school.” A four-year student government member, Herr has helped lead publicity efforts throughout the years. Most recently, he promoted and helped design advertisements for Boulder Creek’s second “Wish Week,” a campaign that raised more than $15,000 for Make-A-Wish Arizona. Herr says although planning large campus events can be difficult, he loves having input on important decisions. “I joined StuGo because I like being behind-the-scenes. I love being the first to know what is happening at school and getting to give my input,” Herr says. “Plus, our adviser, Caitlin McAndrew, always knows what to do. She challenges us to always do more.” As for Herr’s next task? He’s looking forward to finding new media strategies to boost engagement with the Anthem community. As May gets closer, Herr is working on advertisements and campaigns geared at encouraging the community to support the school in the final stages of the year.

“I’m using social media to promote things in a big way,” Herr says. “I want everyone to feel included and involved.”

Herr is looking forward to pursuing public relations in college and potentially applying for an internship through the Disney College Program.

As his senior year comes to a close, Herr hopes to encourage underclassmen and fellow StuGo members to get more involved on campus and push themselves to embrace their high school experience.

“I want Boulder Creek to be one of those places that everyone looks up to,” Herr says. “I want everyone to say, ‘Wow, I want my high school experience to be just like that.’” Emma Suttel is a senior at Boulder Creek.
