For the last seven of her 16 years as a teacher, Jessica Bradley has been on the Horizon Honors Secondary School faculty, teaching various mathematics courses.

Her love of school from the time she was a child led her to teaching.

“When I got to high school and developed a love for math due to a few really wonderful teachers,” she explained, “I knew that was what I wanted to do.”

She loves the fact that every day is a new adventure in her classroom, but added, “I also really love watching my students grow academically.”

“Typically this is just over the course of a school year but since we are a secondary school and I teach both middle and high school courses, I have the opportunity to teach students at both the beginning and end of their secondary school journey, which is a really unique experience.”

Ask Jamie Bescak why she became a teacher and she’ll give you the same answer she gave her father when he asked that question many years ago: “I want to get up every day and love my job. It’s not about making a lot of money. It’s not just a job to me; it’s my calling to be an educator; to make a difference in young learners’ lives.”

The Ohio native has been doing just that for 19 years, the last seven at St. John Bosco, where she is the preschool director and ESP supervisor.

“Children’s minds are blank canvases, and teachers have the unique opportunity to sketch, draw, paint, and design the minds of children to influence future leaders and develop into leaders themselves,” she said.

Her favorite part of job is “getting to truly know each of my students through conversation, observation, assessments and spending time with each of them.”

Festival of Lights Kick Off Party

The Ahwatukee Family YMCA, repeat winner in this category, has been a pillar in the community since it opened in 1999 with its wellness activities and programs for youths, teens, adults and families and groups.

It is home to the Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors (Y OPAS) 62 years and older. The Ahwatukee Y provided swimming lessons at apartment complexes to promote drowning awareness.

It boasts youth fitness room, teen and technology center, child watch, outdoor heated pools, and cardio and strength-training equipment.

Since 1995, the Festival of Lights, which repeats as winner of this category, has been an integral part of the Ahwatukee Foothills community. Supporting the Festival of Lights, which is a non-profit 501c3 corporation, and its million white-lights display along Chandler Boulevard during the holiday season, is the Kick Off Party the Saturday after each Thanksgiving.
