Oscars so controversial

ince 1992 I can remember watching the Academy Awards with my grandma and select family and friends. Terminator 2: Judgment Day won a lot that night. Ever since 1995, I can remember getting up at five in the morning to watch the Oscar nominations. I can remember calling my grandma around six in the morning; her telling me she’ll take me to see The Shawshank Redemption. For 30 years I’ve actively been a huge fan of cinema, even taking numerous film classes at Moorpark Junior College in the early 2000s and earning a master’s of English with an emphasis in film theory in the late 2000s. So, when I say I believe art is important, the way we respect it and honor it is relevant, and that the Oscars have a responsibility to maintain that integrity from a culture perspective, I’m not just speaking in hyperbole. When I see the changes the Academy of Motion Picture

Arts and Sciences is making in not broadcasting certain awards, it’s time we talk about it.

Ratings for the Oscars have been on a rapid decline for 20 years.

Some nights were huge Super Bowl-level events, like 1998’s ceremony when Titanic (over 57 million viewers) and 2004’s Lord of the Rings: Return of the King cleaned up (over 44 million watching). Yet, recent years are down.

In 2019, ratings dropped to around 30 million, and the last “normal” telecast in 2020, before the world shut down, was at just under 27 million with South Korea’s international hit Parasite grabbing the most little gold men. The 2021 fiasco, with Nomadland winning the major awards, drew in less than 10 million viewers, and people were stuck at home.

Regardless of what people might think about giving wealthy people a night to celebrate their art, these types of shows, like the Emmys

and the Tonys, are a reflection of the type of work that speaks to the soul of humanity. They are no more or no less as important as finding out who the best sports team is in their respective leagues. Performance art is a way for people to decompress. We’ve seen this with how Marvel films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and fresh ideas like Free Guy can ignite pop culture fires, drawing in mass audiences with larger-than-life stories of heroism and romance.

To increase viewership, ABC and the Academy have tried to make strides in increasing diverse membership and removing categories, creating awful new ones (remember the Most Popular Movie ideas?), and bringing in new directors and producers to create an event worth watching. What they don’t realize is that every-day people don’t care about these awards.

their own fan base. The “let them eat cake” mentality of old Hollywood is dead, and now the Oscars should focus on the audience that is interested: cinema lovers — not movie star lovers. In a 24/7 entertainment-based news cycle, the Oscars isn’t the only place to find beloved actors. They’re on TV, streaming shows, YouTube, podcasts, social media, etc. all the time now. People can engage with them on Twitter and Instagram daily.

So, when the Academy committee decided to eliminate eight awards from the live telecast in hopes of increasing ratings, including documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short and sound, Film Twitter went crazy. The idea that people don’t want to watch technical awards is just ridiculous.

That wasn’t a hindrance years before. The real issue is that the types of films being celebrated

have changed. The way we see movies has changed. They aren’t events anymore — they’re twohour blips in the day. Whether it’s Disney+ or Netflix, people are watching films when they want, not when the theater decides. People are waiting the 30-45 days to stream for free. People are still watching, but they don’t want to be told when they have to.

If the Oscars really wanted to increase ratings, they should just change the narrative. Create a campaign to embrace artistic films, as well as generate excitement leading to nomination day. People need skin in the game. ABC threatened to drop the telecast if they didn’t drop a few awards. Instead, they should double down on the awards, get film nerds excited about the tech categories, and work at explaining the importance of these crafts. They need to raise the stakes and tell a story — you know, like how they do at the movies!

n Thursday, March 3, about 20 residents from across Ventura County rallied at the Ventura County Government Center in solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the wake of the ongoing and escalating Russian invasion.

“All of my family is there, my mom, brothers, all my friends,” said Halyna Turchyn, a Ukranian who has lived in Ventura for 10 years.

She was visibly emotional while speaking and held a sign depicting

Russian President Vladimir Putin with a bloodied hand print over his face and the word “killer.” “I’m heartbroken, devastated, scared. I have a range of feelings about this. How can we help other than protest?” She said she is in touch with her family, who are all alright so far, but communication can be hard because there is no Internet due to the war. “Because they live close to the border with Poland, it’s safer there than in other parts of Ukraine.”

“At a crossroads” Will Ventura Harbor opt to allocate grant funds for business back rent?

usinesses have been hit hard by the pandemic. As some begin to recover, others are being left in the lurch because they were just opening in 2020.

“I am so tired of getting empty emails from politicians praising themselves for all the businesses they have saved and money distributed to aid in COVID financial relief. What about those businesses left behind that are still fighting to keep staff employed and the doors open?” said Jonra Cross, owner of Frenchies Modern Nail Care in the Ventura Harbor Village, speaking to the Ventura County Reporter on March 3. “There is an underserved group of businesses that were in startup [or] build-out phase in 2019, hiring employees and set to open in 2020.”

So far she has sold a motorhome and her car, paid off business loans with personal funds, and even applied to refinance her home to cover costs. Still, there is back rent owed to the Ventura Harbor.

According to meeting minutes from the Ventura Port Commission, which oversees the Ventura Port District that includes the Ventura Harbor and Ventura Harbor Village, the commission is negotiating with four businesses in the harbor. In addition 6— — March 10, 2022

to Cross’s business, the district is negotiating with 805 Bar and Grilled Cheese, the Copa Cubana, the Ventura Comedy Club and the Village Carousel as part of the district’s COVID-19 Rental Abatement and Deferment Program.

According to March 17, 2021 minutes, the program included two provisions. First, that a minimum of 40% of rent unpaid due to the pandemic must be repaid by Dec. 21, 2021, with the remaining rent to be repaid by June 30, 2022.

Businesses that were in operation throughout 2019 were able to qualify for the nine rounds of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding and have mostly been able to pay rent owed as a result. But some newer businesses still owe.

According to Cross, paying unpaid rent by June 30 means essentially “doubling” her monthly rent — something she is not able to accommodate. She owes over $40,000 in rent, and needs more time to spread out the amount owed, or have some of it simply abated. She also said the district has tried to get her to sign a new lease for a longer term with higher rent, saying the current rent amount is below market rate.

“I have no more cushion, no energy and no other place to go to try to stay open.” Cross described her business model as “unique” in that it is employee-based and she wants to do all she can to keep the employees working. “When will state and federal agencies move the needle to really help the newer businesses? …We are still falling through the donut hole in

eligibility for COVID funding.”

Falling through the hole

Cross was one of those business owners getting ready to open in early 2020. In February 2020 she hired 12 employees. The stay-at-home orders started in March. “We kept remote training eight hours a week for a month to keep everyone engaged and hopeful.” She was also told, like many businesses, that PPP loans would cover the costs.

But PPP loans rely on a business being able to report revenue in 2019, which of course Frenchies didn’t have because it hadn’t opened yet. Those funds never came for Cross’s business.

Meanwhile, her start-up costs accumulated but her business had “no opportunity to earn revenue to pay bills during COVID, no access to financial aid and thus the bills piled up.” She also had three months of rent to pay and a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan payment due.

Cross proceeded to request a withdrawal from her business loan to use as working capital. But that request was denied by her lender, Stearns Bank. “They froze my SBA account with about $25,000 that had yet to be disbursed. Since business operations were halted by the government, so was funding. They did not care bills were due.” She closed that loan “to roll into the SBA 7A loan COVID relief program.”

Her business only received $5,000 in PPP funds in the first round, because subsequent rounds required income in 2019. She used that $5,000 to retrain her staff for the new outdoor service requirements for nail salons. Those requirements also cost her business money because they had to pay costs to set up operations outside, which lasted for two months. Indoor operations started up in fall of 2020, but then they were closed again in December 2020 through Feb. 1, 2021.

The Ventura County Reporter interviewed Cross in May of 2020 and while she expressed frustration, she was hopeful. That hope is waning.

“We are still open, but we have not come to an agreement on back rent with the harbor,” said Cross.

She hopes an agreement can be reached at the next meeting scheduled for March 16, but she also has questions about how the funds are being allocated to cover various businesses’ back rent, since some of those businesses were able to qualify for PPP funds in all available rounds

of funding.

Ventura Harbor grant funds received

The Ventura Port District applied for $1,060,484 from a one-time $250 million allocation to “California’s ports to mitigate the economic impacts resulting from the COVID19 pandemic.” The funds are being allocated by the State Land Commission (SLC) from monies sent to the states as part of the Federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA). The funds require that “ports use the funds to address negative economic impacts due to COVID-19,” and may be used for “avoiding layoffs, restoring jobs and services lost due to COVID-19” and for funding projects that were delayed due to the pandemic.

States are permitted to consider revenue losses in determining the level of funding to be granted on an applicant-by-applicant basis. In the application for the grant funds, the Ventura Harbor reported total lost revenue of $798,332 during the time Continued on Page 8

Eye on the Environment

Limits on unrecyclable paper in organics carts

ince food recycling programs started in Ventura County in January, local environmental advocates have focused on communicating the importance of recycling organics, but there is one category of organics requiring caution before composting.

Organics include anything once alive and therefore capable of rotting, and diverting organics from landfills is important because when these items rot in the absence of oxygen, methane gas is produced. Methane is many times more powerful than carbon as a climate changing emission.

Applying this reasoning to their own garbage, a few people have emailed me asking, “What about non-recyclable paper?” Paper is made from trees, and trees were alive, so shouldn’t paper also be easy to compost? And is composting the best option for unrecyclable paper, such as paper contaminated with food or coated with a non-stick surface?

The short answer is, “Mostly, no.”

Some non-recyclable paper is compostable, but most types of non-recyclable paper could cause problems at compost facilities.

“Brown paper napkins, brown paper bags people use to bag their food scraps, and uncoated, greasy pizza boxes, and pressed-pulp egg cartons are easy to compost,” explained Robert Ford, a business development manager with Synagro Technologies, which composts in Kern County most of the food scraps collected for recycling from Ventura County.

However, typical of inquiries from people wanting to divert as much as possible from landfills, the questions are more often about difficult-to-manage items. For example, Ms. Lilith (her full name), of Ventura, posted to me, via Nextdoor: “. . . There are some take out containers and I just bought a meat . . . tray made of compressed paper. Is there anything that can be done with them other than the trash?”

The harbor will be awarded the full amount requested and projects funded include several deferred projects to bring facilities into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as replacing vehicles for the Harbor Patrol and lifeguard services. Funds will also be used to rebuild showers at nearby beaches, installation of electric vehicle charging stations, refurbishing

a commercial fish hoist and other structural improvements to the commercial fish building.

The grant application also listed the district’s “Debt Forgiveness and Rental Abatement and Deferment program,” and included uncollected debt from various areas, including unpaid rent, in order to qualify for the funds requested and approved.

In an email response to the VCReporter, Todd Mitchell, business operations manager for the Ventura Port District, said that in addition to the

meat trays “…could present a PFAS issue,” he said. By PFAS, Ford is referring to polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are chemicals designed for non-stick surfaces. Although found in products ranging from cookware to dental floss, according to peoplespharmacy.com, suspected health consequences cause composters to avoid these items.

Non-stick surfaces are also barriers to composting items ranging from coated pizza boxes to coated popcorn bags. Other non-recyclable paper also often contains material composters want to keep out of their high-quality soil amendments. For example, “The bleach from white napkins could become a problem if we got too much,” according to Ford.

Other paper items, such as ice cream tubs, are plasticized. A thin coating of plastic makes the packaging useful for storing and dispensing products, but it would degrade the quality of compost and interfere with compost operations if included in organics loads.

Recology’s compost facility in Kern County, another destination for Ventura County organics, elaborated, “Waxed paper is actually coated in plastic, so it doesn’t break down like food or other organics. We keep it out so it doesn’t get in the way or make our compost look trashy.”

Recycling paper is better than composting, because recycling recovers more resources and delivers a higher-value product. Many paper products cannot be recycled, however. Daniel Marks, CEO of Berg Mill Supply, which brokers much of the recyclables from Ventura County, explained why any food-contaminated paper should be left out of the recycling stream.

Inspectors at paper mills have a “no food waste” standard, Marks explained. If your egg carton has a little egg on it, or the bottom of your pizza box has a little cheese stuck to it, and if these items end up on the side of a bale an inspector happens to see, the recyclables could be downgraded in value. Possibly an entire bale, or perhaps an entire load, could

Mitchell clarified that as of now, “no money from the SLC grant has been expended.” He said the State Land Commission hasn’t yet finalized all of the grant procurement and reporting guidelines and so the dis-

trict is waiting until those are finalized. In the meantime, the district is only using its “in kind contribution to begin advancing some of the named capital projects.” Funds must be expended before June 30, 2024.

As of press deadline Mitchell did not respond to requests for clarification on how funds will be allocated to cover the back rent of the various businesses in the Ventura Harbor Village.

“I’m at a crossroads about what to do,” said Cross. “I think the harbor has to make a decision and extend some of the grant money,” to cover

The late William Rathje, a research fellow in archaeology and consulting professor in anthropology at Stanford University and professor at the University of Arizona, excavated landfills several years ago as part of anthropological studies on American consumption patterns. He found paper sometimes remained relatively intact.

In fact, he was able to date landfill strata by looking at the still-readable dates on entombed newspapers.

This is our duty.”

It is the vow taken by women that join the Akashinga, the all-female, vegan, anti-poaching ranger corps organized to protect 20 wildlife preserves in Zimbabwe from poachers.

The Akashinga rangers (Akashinga means “brave ones” in Shona) are recruited, trained, organized and supported by the International Anti-Poaching Foundation (IAPF), founded by Damien Mander in 2017.

By 2021 the organization employed 240 local women as wildlife rangers across 20 nature preserves in Zimbabwe and has set a goal of expanding to 1,000 rangers by 2025.

Mander will be speaking in Thousand Oaks as part of a National Geographic Live tour across the U.S. on Friday, March 11. While in the country he will be meeting with donors and conservation leaders and speaking about the unique approach to community-based conservation and how it can model an approach to

law enforcement beyond the world of poaching.

“There has not only been an organizational evolution in what we do, but a personal evolution,” said Mander, talking with the Ventura County Reporter in February. “We are all a product of our past.”

“I never hunted again after Iraq”

“I was a person that used to hunt before I went to Iraq, deer or whatever else. I never hunted again after Iraq. I know what it is like to be hunted,” Mander said.

He served in the Iraq War as a naval clearance diver and special operations sniper for the Australian Defense Force. After that experience, he came to a powerful personal realization: “If you’re going to point a weapon at something, do it at something that is going to point it back at you, it’s a whole different perspective on hunting.”

“In Iraq I thought it was something right,” he continued. Instead, he found that the military action “destabilized a region and culture.” When his tours ended he gravitated toward conservation work, initially as a way of seeking a “thrill” or “a fight, not a cause.” Then things began to shift for him as he really became immersed in the power of the work and the possibility for community building, something he didn’t know he was seeking.

Thinking back on how he came to conservation work, Mander said there was “not any one incident that changed my life . . . it’s a multitude of things, happening over a long period

of time.”

He did, however, recall two powerful incidents he witnessed. “The final straw was seeing a pregnant buffalo caught in a wire snare that a poacher had set up.” The buffalo had “ripped its own pelvis apart trying to escape.”

The buffalo calf was stillborn, and the buffalo had to be euthanized. Another one: “Seeing an elephant with its face cut off just so a person could see a tusk on their desk was enough for me.”

Initially, as the IAPF was getting started, it was “repeating the same mistakes” as Mander had seen in the military. “We were an occupying

force, working against the local population rather than with them” IAPF staff had set up a law enforcement organization based on the existing model. But Mander didn’t like the results and started looking at what was working and what was not, trying to determine what they were missing. He came across historical articles about women being deployed on the front lines in certain conflicts.

“It was for a specific reason, to negotiate with elders. They were the traditional leaders.”

He explained that the trust system had been so broken down that community members no longer wanted to speak with the men, but they would talk with women. A key to catching March 10, 2022 —

poachers is information. Knowing who they were, where they were and where and when they were going.

Women could sit at kitchen tables in the community and were readily given this information in a way that was not possible with the men.

Mander also realized that if you just put women in a role to “replace” men, that would still be using the same “patriarchal and male dominated” culture. “It’s not really different, it just looks different. We wanted to try something different.

There was no way we could have foreseen the benefits.”

Four and a half years later, the IAPF has over 300 people on staff, with another 150 being recruited right now. It has become the largest conservation organization in the region, and the largest conservation workforce.

“It is not us pushing it,” Mander clarified. “The government and local communities are requesting that we expand this program.”

“Holistic approach” to law enforcement

The biggest shift came when he was able to broaden the traditional approach to law enforcement into a “much more holistic approach.”

While the IAPF is applying that approach with success to fighting wildlife poaching in Africa, Mander also sees it as an important way to start thinking about law enforcement in all types of areas.

The IAPF was challenging the norms of the system and Mander was witnessing women, many abused and living in poverty, putting their lives on the line for nature and, in turn, for their community. When the community began to realize its connection to the local animals and that it could benefit through their protection, the community became supportive of the rangers. The women were earning a living, allowing them to better care for their children, attend school and generally build a better life.

Mander couldn’t help thinking about how when he was in Iraq, earning “a quarter of a million dollars on a private contract,” with all the gear and equipment he needed, unlimited ammunition, and comparing that to the women, being paid $250 a month, “risking their lives just the same and fighting for something much greater . . . I draw inspiration from the rangers.

With a force completely made up of women, deployed into the traditionally male-led roles of wildlife rangers, the community connection was organically enhanced. Mander explained that bringing women in “changed the dynamics” and took the “community connection to a higher level.”

He described three key points related to changes the IAPF was seeing in conservation work as it switched to an all-woman ranger group and built a system around them. For one: a complete lack of corruption. “We have not had one single incident with the women,” where it had been a constant issue with men.

Second, the instinct to de-escalate, largely related to the fact that the women are recruited from the local communities around the nature

preserves they protect. According to Mander, compared to male rangers, the women “have a different value system, a de-escalation intention.” In over 300 arrests made so far, he said shots were only fired once, “and they were warning shots.”

The third key component relates to an important part of anti-poaching operations: information gathering. Simply put, women are good at collecting information. Mander said the organization repeatedly benefits from the women being “plugged into the community at a household level.” They develop positive relationships with the community members, who in turn are willing to provide information.

itarization of operations.” The work is based on relationships rather than artillery or force.

“It’s a unique case study regarding women in law enforcement”

“It’s achieving a better result, at a third of the cost,” Mander added.

“We are not spending on all that hardware. Instead we put the first third [of our budget] on women’s salaries. It’s the most effective dollar that can be spent on community development.” The organization also invests in local education and water, sanitation and healthcare services.

The IAPF is changing the way law enforcement is addressed. Taking a truly community-based policing approach that is “driven through social development to achieve a conservation outcome” is a strategy that Mander says has become the “center” of the organization’s efforts to fight illegal poaching. He said generally “women bring a different component, a different value system” to law enforcement.

Because of the focus on “social development” linked with the work of the IAPF, the community is strengthened as the wildlife is protected. Many of the women being recruited struggle in abusive relationships, in poverty and without any

In their employment with the rangers, they are not only protecting the elephants, lions and other local wildlife but are earning a living, allowing them to build a life for themselves and their children, in turn benefiting their communities. The benefits go well beyond saving the lives of the animals with which these people share the land.

Mander likened the shift he’s seeing in the IAPF’s efforts to the conversations taking place in the United States regarding local law enforcement. He referenced the ongoing discussion in the U.S. about policing, funding, militarization of the police force and abuses within law enforcement.

While the conversation in the U.S. is focused on changing the current system, Mander pointed out that the IAPF had a “blank canvas” to build its ranger group. “We did not disband an existing department, and put women” into that culture. Instead, the IAPF “started with a blank canvas.

It’s a unique case study regarding women in law enforcement.”

He said that what he and other IAPF staff are seeing is “really exciting. There are better ways to do a thing, and to evolve.”

From basketball to mirror ball Iman Shumpert is coming into his own Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

W

hen professional basketball star Iman Shumpert watched Dancing with the Stars co-star JoJo Siwa, he thought there was no way he was going to win the Season 30 mirror ball trophy.

“I don’t go into stuff trying to lose, though,” the free agent player says with a laugh. “I felt like it would be tough. Anybody who saw JoJo dance would have felt the same: I couldn’t beat someone who could go so seamlessly from ballroom female to male style. That takes talent.

“To watch that live, I would get lost in her dances. I thought I couldn’t give a better show than that. I’m not dipping my back, for example.”

Week six was a game changer for him and his professional partner, Daniella Karagach.

“Dani incorporated lifts into the choreography, and we found our niche. It was then that I thought we had a good chance,” Shumpert says.

The partners will show off their mirror ball trophy at “Dancing with the Stars Live!” at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks.

The tour will feature dancers from the TV series, including Karagach, Brandon Armstrong, Alan Bersten, Artem Chigvintsev, Sasha Farber, Pasha Pashkov, Gleb Savchenko, Emma Slater and Britt Stewart, performing the cha cha, foxtrot, salsa and tango.

“The tour is a lot of fun,” Shumpert says. “It’s nonstop dancing. I never thought I’d see an audience who could watch so much dance. ‘Dancing with the Stars Live!’ has a little Broadway to it, a little acting to it. It’s serious.

It has its vulnerable moments and its funny host moments. Emma [Slater] is one of the best people I’ve ever heard on the mic. She has the [English] accent, and she has great crowd control.”

Shumpert says it’s been nice to get to know the dancers on a personal level — beyond the five-second responses to Tyra Banks’ questions on the air.

“We do meet and greets,” he says.

“We’re taking a bus. There are a lot of Instagram stories about the bus. It’s always a lot of fun. I’ve enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

This is a busy year for Shumpert.

He’s dropping an album and slowly rolling out his record label and associated artists and producers. He’s considering a podcast because, when he appears on other shows, the comments are favorable. He’s also reviving his clothing line and rebuilding it with “prestigious” designers.

“It’s nice having been able to dive all the way into it,” he says.

“It’s also nice coming home and being around the people who really, really know me.”

As for the album — which Shumpert has tentatively dubbed This Car Ain’t Stolen— he says the music will resonate because of his honesty.

“I used a car because getting pulled over is such a common ground for Black men in America,” Shumpert says. “When you talk about that idea, you can play on that in a lot of different ways, especially with rap. I just wanted to give that little snapshot

to open people’s minds. I used to be the kid who was in the van with slider doors. People would think that because I’m riding with my brothers, we’re looking for trouble, whether it’s a drive-by or a joyride.”

Shumpert says the album will address sheltering himself from trouble, how his mother speaks to him, his grandmother and what upsets him.

“I never really broke things down that raw before,” he says. “Before, everything has been an EP or a mixtape. This is me owning all the beats and all the rights to everything.

I’m going to present it, shoot the videos and see where it goes.”

Facelift for the grande dame Ventura’s historic theater gets a rejuvenating remodeling

by Marina Dunbar he renowned Majestic Ventura Theater has undergone a significant remodel. The theater is one of the county’s most famous historic highlights, first opening its doors in 1928. It has consistently showcased local arts and entertainment to residents and curious visitors, and along with a prolific history comes a prolific effort to maintain it from its long line of musicand live theater-loving caretakers. Beginning in the midst of the COVID-19 peak, remarkable and respectful remodeling was undertaken at the site, overseen by longtime Manager Loanne Wullaert.

Like many artists, Wullaert used the quarantine period as an opportunity to become more productive and creative. “The shutdown happened and I was trying to figure out what to do with my time . . . I got a PPP [Paycheck Protection Program] loan and was able to use that to have people from my company [I Am The Phoenix] give us some upgrades,” says Wullaert. “We had technical upgrades, such as new lighting equipment. We also had new murals put in. I painted a mural based on the art of Alphonse Mucha from the Art Nouveau era.”

Adding fresh art to the theater was a great way to remind people amidst collective hardship that there is always inspiration to be found. Wullaert drew from two main sources for this remodel. “It is art from the 1920s and we’re in the ’20s now so it seemed to fit. It was also important that we represent the diversity of Ventura County. There is so much rich diversity and history here. I wanted representations of all the different cultures that make Ventura great.”

Finding inspiration in a period of uncertainty and social isolation is not easy, and the fact that so many local artists were able to achieve this is a telltale sign that the music and art world of Ventura is nothing short of extraordinary. “[The pandemic] was awful… I know a lot of people

who took the opportunity to get back into music at home, which I thought was great because there’s only so much time you can spend sitting around. It was definitely debilitating that bands couldn’t get together. It was strange coming out of the pandemic because people have this urge to see live music again, but they were also hesitant to be around lots of people.”

But the hesitation is becoming less and less as word spreads about the beautifully remodeled Ventura Theater. Residents are eager for art and entertainment, and there is no better place to finally fulfill that prolonged yearning than at the place that has served as the heart of local arts for nearly a century.

“We’re getting feedback all the time,” says Wullaert. “People keep telling us how incredibly beautiful the place looks, even though we’re not done yet. We still have work to do on the bathrooms and on restoring the sound system.

It’s almost 100 years old, so there’s definitely constant maintenance that has to be done. But rather than just doing maintenance, this gave us the opportunity to really focus on making the place look incredible.”

The theater was initially designed in the style of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and over the years it has accumulated renovations that both add new and innovative features as well as honor the timelessness of the building’s original design. So much of the community’s unique flavor comes from its architecture and, as Wullaert points out, that’s crucial to remember when considering historical preservation.

“I think preserving historical landmarks is extremely important. It can be really sad to look at Main Street and remember that it used to be all these beautiful ornate buildings with so much character,” she said. “I think that the old buildings are the buildings with the most character.

hat took me so long to discover the mocha-scented deliciousness that is Simone’s?

This locally owned coffee and tea shop has long been a favorite on Ventura’s Eastside, opening on Telegraph Road near Smart & Final in 1996. In 2019, it added another location at the remodeled Community Memorial Hospital (near Ocean Tower Parking), bringing all that magic to Midtown as well. This spot has ample seating inside and out and offers a relaxed, comfortable vibe.

Exactly the kind of place to enjoy coffee with a friend, grab a snack and a cold drink in the afternoon, or just enjoy a blissfully quiet moment to oneself.

After an early-morning lab visit, with a growling stomach and a desperate need for my daily cup of joe, I was unable to resist Simones’ charms . . . chief among them the aromas of freshly brewed coffee wafting toward me. People were already queueing up, including CMH staff, folks from the neighborhood and dog owners with their pups, who were well represented at the outside tables. I hopped in line, eagerly awaiting my first sip of caffeine for the day.

Simone’s offers an impressive array of items, with coffee drinks in nearly every form (drip, espresso, cold brew, blended),

several varieties of tea, milkshakes and smoothies, house-made granola, oatmeal with all the fixings, plus baked goods, sandwiches, wraps and avocado toast. Oh, and a list of specials is usually prominent on the chalkboard behind the register as well. I’ve been to sit-down restaurants with smaller menus.

It didn’t take long to make it to the counter, where I ordered a cinnamon dulce creme — one of the special lattes of the day — and a spinach feta wrap from the cheerful barista. Fun fact: Breakfast sandwiches come on your choice of a bagel or croissant, and any sandwich or wrap can be served over greens as a bowl.

If you are in the mood for something sweet and a little indulgent, I highly recommend a Simone’s latte. My concoction was rich and full bodied, with hints of spice and caramel, and deliciously creamy. The sprinkling of cinnamon on top was a nice touch. I haven’t yet had the more pedestrian options, but judging by the quality of my beverage — and the many other happy customers — my suspicion is that they’d reach the same standard.

I absolutely loved my wrap. The softest eggs and tangy feta were folded into a whole wheat tortilla with a whole bunch of veggies (roasted red peppers and lots of fresh spinach) and a pesto aioli that definitely juiced things up. Tasty, filling and healthy — exactly what I was looking for.

In fact, Simone’s offers a lot of what I’d be looking for any time of the day: something flavorful to eat, something delicious to drink, someplace mellow and welcoming. Like I said before, a great spot to meet a friend, have a nosh or sit in serene solitude. Every neighborhood needs a place like Simone’s, and I’m grateful to have one in mine.
