I hate sports.

Okay, “hate” is a harsh word. I just have absolutely zero interest in sports whatsoever... at all. For me, the Super Bowl is about making fatty snacks, staying in my pajamas all day and watching puppies play, as far as I’m concerned, a legitimate game of NFLsanctioned football. Honestly, I wouldn’t know the difference if you tried to tell me.

Anytime anyone tries to explain football to me, my eyes glaze over and I daydream about puppies, only tuning in every once in awhile to say “mmhmm” or “oh, really?”

The only Olympic event I watched this season was the opening ceremonies. The only bone I’ve ever broken was during a game of basketball. My pinky crumbled

Pyramid and multi-level marketing schemes: How not to get sucked in Ana Anguiano • College Times A pyramid scheme is, at its core, is an illegal venture that makes money by continuously recruiting new distributors (“investors”) in order to compensate participants. Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies claim they are nothing like pyramid schemes and that they cannot only guarantee their legality, but can promise success.

According to pyramid scheme expert Dr. William W. Keep, business school dean at The College of New Jersey, MLM distributors buy products for their own use, at what the company calls a discounted price, and then also try to sell products for a profit. However, Dr. Keeps says, in order to make decent money, they have to recruit people as distributors.

This is the model companies such as Herbalife and Vemma, the company that makes the energy drink Verve, follow. It’s an extremely competitive atmosphere and being in a college town means there are plenty of vendors already in the area.

College students have a target on their backs. They are young, mostly naïve, almost always in need of money and have a big network of acquaintances.

On the surface, both models seem pretty cool. You make your own hours, you call the shots and supposedly you make plenty of cash. But the name of the pyramid game is all about lining the pockets of someone other than you. In the end, you could lose a lot of money and even worse, you could make someone you know lose their savings as well.

While not all MLM are pyramid schemes, they do have similarities and both probably won’t pay you like a normal job would. Here are some things to consider when it comes to both:

Know the signs of a scam: * There is a massive push to recruit your friends and acquaintances. * The environment is high pressure. * Your meetings are all pep talks, success stories, testimonials and pumped up “Wolf of Wall Street” type speeches that have nothing to do with what you are actually selling. * You have to sign a sketchy contract. * You have to pay out of your own pocket.

Miss Arizona Latina on how to get more young women in STEM careers Jorge Salazar • College Times Brenda Soto is much more than just another pretty face. While she may have bronze skin, long flowing hair and hold the title of Miss Arizona Latina 2013, Soto strikes the perfect balance of beauty and brains. Soto, who moved from Mexico to Arizona when she was just 9 years old, is currently an undergraduate student at the Arizona State University pursuing her final year in civil engineering.

Soto, who plans to become a structural engineer and work on bridges, took a moment to talk to us about pageant drama, career goals and why more girls aren’t pursuing science-y degrees.

* If something seems too good to be true. * Anyone gets hired, no matter what. * They are selling a product no one truly wants at a price that is not competitive. * They will argue until they are blue in the face that they are not a pyramid scheme. * Only the top 1 percent are making a fortune.

College Times: What do you think is the biggest misconception about beauty pageants?

Soto: I believe the biggest misconception I had of pageants is that I thought they were how they are usually portrayed in television: full of drama. However, being in the Miss Arizona Latina pageant proved me wrong.

All the girls were very kind and loyal to one another.

If it even remotely looks like a pyramid scheme, run. It won’t be worth your time or effort.

They say it takes real motivation and drive, so why not put that time and effort into something real? Students have to think long term. Will this enhance your resume? What will your family say? Instead of banking on the newest business “opportunity” or “venture,” invest in yourself and your future.

What drew you to a career in civil engineering?

Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to pursue a career in architecture. However, as I explored the career more, I realized that what I wanted to study was civil engineering. I have always loved to be challenged and to help people’s lives be better. Another reason is because there are many opportunities in the field, like

traveling, since every country needs engineers. There are options to work in the field, to work in an office, or to teach.

Women account for only 13 percent of both the engineering and civil engineering workforce. Why do you think are some reasons more women are not entering STEM careers?

I have encountered myself in situations where I arrive to one of my classes the first day to find out there are only about five to seven women and 20 men. I believe that one of the misconceptions of engineering is that it is men oriented. I believe women are intimidated by this fact and are opting to choose careers in other areas.

What do you think can be done to interest more young women into pursuing this field?

To make women more interested in this career choice is to get them more involved into what this career is like.

Through workshops, or other events that can be organized locally, or even at their high schools, we can raise engineering awareness and highlight its benefits. I believe that becoming a strong leader in this specific career choice and achieving a very successful position is the greatest benefit someone can get from this field.

Engineering is a field meant to solve people’s problems, and to make their lives better. I believe that if students start becoming more conscious about the world needs, we will make this place a better place to live.

League of Legends players.

ASU’s League of Legends Community Jorge Salazar • College Times League of Legends is an online video game that gets back to basics: having fun. And it allows you to do so in between classes and study sessions.

“You can just pick it up and play a game or two,” says Andy Hester, vice president of ASU’s League of Legends Community.

“Nothing really rolls over, so you don’t have a personal character as much as you just play a game.”

The game and its large-scale competition events have become legitimate enough that foreign players can get visitor visas recognizing them as professional athletes.

Hester says the popularity of the game, and the reason for the community at ASU, has to do with the inclusiveness it offers its players.

“It’s easy to pick up and the community is friendly,” he says. “We just like to have fun. Whether you already play or are interested in learning, come to our events.”

College Times: For the uninitiated, what is League of Legends?

Hester: It’s an online video game for you to play, and there are multiple playing modes.

The most common is five on five, where you control fantasy characters and battle monsters and minions and other characters in 40-minute to one-hour games and eventually kill the enemy’s base.

When and why did you start this club?

We started in fall of 2013. Nick Nist and I, who are the co-founders, are a part of the ASU E-Sports Association Club. The E-Sports club is good about doing competitive

League of Legends events at ASU, but there wasn’t anything in terms of just a Facebook page where I could post “Hey, I’m going to be playing for the next two hours, anyone want to join me?” So we created a Facebook group and then asked why we couldn’t just make it an official club at ASU, and that’s where we’re at now.

What kind of events does the League of Legends community participate in?

There are two main kinds. One is a viewing party, where we watch professionals play League of Legends with food. It’s like watching a sports game. And the other kind is just when we “LAN” it up and we just have members bring their computers and use ASU’s Wi-Fi to play League of Legends together.

How often do you do hold competitions?

We try to do it every week. Last semester, the scheduled day was every Thursday. Now we’re starting our first one on a Tuesday and we’re going to probably change it every week with days in between Tuesdays and Sundays.

What exciting activities do you have planned for the upcoming semester?

We’ll have occasional tournaments, probably two to three tournaments a semester, and those will be around six to seven hours. Riot Games, the company that makes League of Legends, sees that our club is legitimate and, if we get enough people to turn up to events, they’ll give us prize money with in-game currency and other kinds of prizes for our tournament winners.

At the Arizona Renaissance Festival Lily Lieberman • College Times I have a confession to make: When I was 12, I dreamed of becoming a medieval historian. I would read every risqué novel on the Tudor Dynasty and watch every period piece I could find. Maybe it had something to do with Heath Ledger’s performance in “A Knight’s Tale,” or maybe it was the sheer magnificence of the time period.

Nope, it was definitely Heath.

Regardless, there’s something so romantic about the Renaissance—a time when courting a woman meant writing her poetry instead of sending a Snapchat. (Both clearly booty calls, but somehow the former seems more chivalrous.)

So when I finally arrived at the Renaissance Festival, my knowledge of the time period flooded back to me. My childhood fantasy had come true. Here I was, in bum-fudge nowhere, devouring a turkey leg the size of a small child whilst surrounded by my people.

Not that I wasn’t overwhelmed by the monstrosity that is the festival grounds. A village of its own, it was as if these 30 acres were stuck in a time warp.

My first stop was at the Barely Balanced theatre troupe. Three individuals who evidently had a death wish performed feats of strength and stability all while juggling sharp swords.

I might have fallen a bit in love with the next act—nine-time Guinness World Record holder Adam Crack—because who doesn’t love a man who lashes flaming whips for a living? Mr. Crack (who made full use of his stage name with a few potty jokes) entertained the audience with his signature act:

cracking a flower in half held in the mouth of his stunning assistant, Esmeralda. How he managed to focus with her Angelina Jolie-esq thigh-baring slit is beyond me. The crowd tipped well after the show, undoubtedly contributing to Adam’s future rotator cuff surgery.

I meandered through the endless artisan shops filled with swords and shields, pewter goblets, brass rubbings, handmade soaps, exotic oils and clothing. But what really caught my eye was a pottery shop filled with small bowls labeled things like “Ashes of Annoying Clients,” “Boob Job Fund” and “What-ifs.” I love me some ancient humor.

The variety of activities was overwhelming. How could I justify choosing to throw tomatoes at an insulting peasant over throwing an axe, knives and death stars—a skill needed for nightly travels on the Light Rail.

In the end I chose archery. Between sticky bites of a caramel apple, I tried my hand at the sport. Conclusion: I would not have been a warrior. Princess is definitely more my speed.

Defeated, I ended up at the Ded Bob Show, an obvious festival favorite. Note to self: Everything is funnier with a puppet.

Although much of the humor was far too inappropriate for half of the audience, liquid courage definitely helped ease the tension.

Unfortunately, I only caught the last few minutes of the jousting tournament, but it left me time to tour a dungeon.

“Rock and Roll,” an old Gandolf doppelganger said, bidding me farewell at the festival gates with rock in one hand and bread roll in the other—an ingenious sendoff back into the modern world. Until next year…

Move over, sushi. Tapas are the trendiest way to eat light. For some inexplicable reason, few things seem more decadent than small bites paired with a glass of red wine, but both will quickly run up a bill at any restaurant. Skip out on that big check. Many of the ingredients in these recipes can be used for more than one of the tapas, so don’t be turned off by the price.

Grab your favorite bottle of $5 wine and get to cooking, because we’re keeping it classy with this week’s College Kitchen.

Goat Cheese Bruschetta

Possibly the easiest “fancy” recipe of all time, all you’ll need is four ingredients. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees, then chop one inch off the non-spear end of your asparagus, since they tend to not cook well. On one side of the bacon, spread a light amount cream cheese, then wrap it around four-to-five spears of asparagus. (If you, like certain writers at certain newspapers, have an over zealous boyfriend who loves bacon, odds are yours will wind up looking more like ours. But one or two slices of bacon should suffice, in a reasonable person’s reality.) Drizzle the spear end with olive oil and cook for 30 minutes or until bacon is browned and asparagus is soft. Slice roll into pieces with a super sharp knife for tapas-sized pieces.

Spinach and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms

Cut the stems out of the mushrooms, then finely chop the stems, 3 tablespoons of onions and two cloves garlic. Place the mushroom caps stem side up on a baking sheet. Boil 1/4 cup of water, then add frozen spinach and cook covered for 10 minutes. Drain the spinach once cooked and set aside. In a separate sauce pan, melt 3 tablespoons of butter and add onion and garlic. Cook until onions are transparent, then add in minced mushroom caps, bacon, drained spinach and 5 tablespoons heavy cream. Once mixture is cooked together, add ½ cup parmesan cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Spoon mixture into mushroom caps, then drizzle caps with melted butter (about 3 tablespoons.) Bake for 25 minutes and enjoy!

Impress your friends with a flavor explosion. And all it requires is 10 minutes of effort. First, dice six Roma tomatoes, one small package basil (about 10 leaves) and 1/2 cup roasted red peppers and place in a storable container. Add 1/2 cup olive oil and 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar and stir. Add salt and pepper to taste, then set aside to marinate for 10 minutes. In the mean time, slice baguette into thin pieces and turn the oven on “broil.” Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast each side until golden brown. Pull the sheet out of the oven, then add a small amount of goat cheese and bruschetta topping to each toast. Broil for 20 more seconds, then serve.

Visiting a local museum not only lets you experience local history and scientific oddities, but you can also use your day trip as a conversation starter to let others know you’re more than just a pretty face.

While your local haunt may be whatever is within stumbling distance, try something out of your comfort zone. If you’re more of a pub person, try a local nightclub and get your dancing shoes on. Take a zip line adventure

With almost half of the Major Leagues’ teams preparing for the upcoming season in venues surrounding the Phoenix area, you can tell others you were sporty during your vacation (even if the only thing you caught during the game was some cotton candy.)

See a play

Staying home does not mean you have to forfeit being cultured. Plays come in all themes and genres, and taking a night to catch one at your local theater is a great way to nurture your inner thespian.

Phoenix is host to a variety of events showcasing local art, music and culinary experiences. There is always something going on and it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the community by supporting local businesses. If you want to indulge in the arts, the Spark! Festival of Creativity, which will include dance performances and art exhibitions, takes place from March 19 to 23 at the Mesa Arts Center. Music lovers can enjoy the Folk and Heritage Festival at the Sahuaro Ranch Historic Park in Glendale on March 19 and 20. And if you want to broaden your cultural horizons, join the Pakistan Information and Cultural Organization at the 12th Annual Kite Flying Festival to welcome spring on March 24 at Fountain Hills Park.

Go skydiving

Nothing says R&R quite like throwing yourself off of a moving plane and plummeting towards the ground 120 miles per hour. Live life on the wild side and take a skydiving class. Hurtling through the air is a great way to blow off some steam and most skydiving companies either film or photograph your drops so you have something badass to show off to friends when they get back from their money draining, out of town excursions.

And of course we don’t want to get you in trouble, but if you were to sneak into a hotel pool, here’s how you would do it.

Do your research Many hotels have rooms that are labeled by three digit numbers, with the first number describing the floor. If someone asks for your room number and you say something that isn’t real, they will know something is up. Usually they are looking for a room number and last name, but chances are they won’t actually search the name and room number in the system. Another important detail to know is whether or not the hotel pool area uses a wristband system to identify guests, like the Arizona Grand Resort.

In Phoenix, hotel pools are in abundance and many of them are pretty awesome.

Mission Palms

This pool may not be the prettiest hotel pool in the Valley, but it has a nice hot tub and covered cabana space that allows you to escape the sun when needed. This pool makes the list because of its location (right off of Mill Avenue and within walking distance of ASU campus).

The Mission Palms Hotel has separate entrances that allow you to access the pool without passing the security desk, but beware of nosy pool attendants who want to spoil your fun. The pool is on an upper level, but is secluded and in a very sunny spot.

Aloft Tempe

Located right off of campus near Sun Devil Stadium, this pool is one of the hot-

test in Tempe. According to Yelp, this tiny pool with adjoining outdoor patio is rarely used by guests, which is not a problem for us! The hotel is also conveniently positioned close to an In-N-Out, for when you want to say “screw it” and do damage to that bikini body.

Hotel Valley Ho

Rated one of the “world’s coolest pools” by Travel and Leisure and the “best party resort pool” by Arizona Foothills, the Oh Pool and Lounge go above and beyond your average Motel 8 pool. The cabanas can be rented out and include amenities such as fruit plates and mini bars. The cabana is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The cabana area has lots of shade, but there are also places to get your tan on. Cabana rentals can run as high as $500 for a weekend, so prepare to get spendy.

Clarendon Hotel

The Oasis Pool is a work of art in and of itself with 24 carot gold and platinum accent tiles and a silver coated water wall. The Oasis Pool also has underwater

speakers that are illuminated by underwater stars. Jump in five person hydrospa, and you won’t even have to sneak in! The best part is that the pool is open to non-guests during the day for $10 (Mondays through Thursdays). The Oasis Pool also features V.I.P. cabanas equipped with 47 inch flat screens and six outdoor cabanas, which are known to be some of the largest and most luxurious in Arizona.

Hotel Palomar

This third floor outdoor pool lets you bask in the sun or shade, all while taking in a wraparound view of Downtown Phoenix. There is a full service bar, patio area and a small restaurant. This pool is also open to the public, so there is plenty of space to accommodate guests with different seating styles, from the chaise lounges to couches and tables. There is a reason this pool is located so close to US Airways Center and Chase Field—it’s a perfect summer time get away for pool time or a pre-game cocktail hangout.

“Can I help you?” is the cover-all hotel concierge phrase. If they ask you just reply with a polite “I’m good, thanks,” the same way you would if you were walking around a hotel that you actually paid for. If you get the sense that they are accusing you of something, make them directly accuse you.

They probably won’t because a confrontation with a guest could cost them their job, which they won’t risk unless they are positive that you are guilty. Confidence will take you far, so fake it ‘til you make it.

Dress the part.

You will also need a costume to complete the act. Show up in pool attire. Backpacks are a dead giveaway. Who comes down from their hotel room with a backpack a towel from “the outside?” Hotels almost always offer complimentary towels, so don’t bring your own. Wear your bathing suit and bring few supplies other than a water bottle, sunglasses, and maybe some sun tan lotion, too. Just think about what you would bring down from your room to the pool, probably not an entire bag’s worth of belongings.

Be respectful A good way to get kicked out of any pool is to disobey the posted rules and act like an unruly child. Hotels can make guests leave for this reason, so they will make you leave too. Just remember to act like you are paying for this pool and remember that the other patrons are also paying and would like to enjoy their stay.

Here’s how to know if cuddling services are your best option when you’re not getting any cuddle play on-the-reg.

Samantha Hess doesn’t mind what you are. Her job as a professional cuddler has put her in plenty of compromising positions.

“I have close to 50 [positions] now.

The great thing is there’s something for everyone. I have several clients that are autistic and they find that they either like to hold or like to be held. The need to be squeezed is really important but they also like their space,” says Hess.

Instead of having the traditional chaise lounge and Freudian psychologist asking you to describe the inkblots you see (they’re just smudges, dangit), clients call Hess for a 30 or 60 minute snuggle session where they can watch TV, play video games or just sit for $60 a pop.

“We are, by nature, social creatures, and our acceptance comes from the people around us. So having someone touch us literally releases chemicals that make us feel accepted,” Hess says.

Her clients range from cancer patients to single dads, to people who have lost someone in their life, or people that are just plain lonely.

Hess is one among a burgeoning industry of healers around the country who provide a platonic intimacy service that Hess believes “gives people a sense of self-worth and allows them to just feel accepted.”

Although Hess is located in Portland, Oregon, cuddle therapists are popping up everywhere, even here in Arizona.

Len Daley, executive director of Cuddle Party Headquarters and one of its founders, believes cuddling comes in many forms—it isn’t just your typical spoon session.

Cuddle Party, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the end of this month, is a company that organizes facilitated workshops in about 15 states and Canada.

“We have certified facilitators on five continents. We don’t touch Antarctica or South America. South America is the cuddliest continent, so really, they don’t need us,” Daley says.

Arizona will have a chance to experience the power of touch April 10, when a cuddle party, hosted by one of the company’s founders, comes to Phoenix.

“The first part of a cuddle party sets up rules and agreements by which people interact with each other in non-sexual intimate ways,” Daley says. “They ask for and receive compassion, kindness and affection and the rules are set up so they can safely do that. One of the rules is you don’t ever have to do anything at a cuddle party. You can change your mind.”

So what exactly happens at a cuddle party? The first 40 minutes lay out the ground rules and the rest of the evening is “freestyle” cuddling, preceded by a closing circle and a giant puppy pile, where participants lay on top of each other.

But cuddling isn’t exactly what you think it is. In fact, you may be immersed in the act of cuddling while you’re reading this.

“Cuddling could just be conversation.

It could just be being in the same room and smelling pheromones of other human beings. It could be just hanging out or

holding hands. There’s an infinite variety of things,” Daley says.

Travis Sigley, the founder of Cuddle Therapy, started his business about four years ago when he noticed a growing problem with human connection and vulnerability.

“People not being able to trust each other,” he says simply, Skyping shirtless from Brazil.

With touch-and-go connection, Sigley explains the practicality of indulging in such a service. He views it as a kind of training ground to more intimate in your everyday life.

“People in general just have a hard time connecting. We usually have to have some sort of excuse or correct environment in order to just walk up and talk to someone.

Cuddle therapy is an intimacy and affection service to help people practice what it’s like to be close to others, and give them an environment where they’re not gambling on anything. A lot of people have zero knowhow or education and if they haven’t been brought up with it in their family, they just don’t have it,” Sigley says.

Sigley recently flew to Portland to chat with Hess and had a session with her to see what her process was like.

“It’s like doing research in the field. It’s great seeing someone else so passionate about it and really doing it for the right reasons,” Sigley says.

Step 1: EVALUATE Do you want to be a cranky SOB? We didn’t think so. Cuddling actually releases oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin—all feel-good hormones that make you feel, well, good. Len Daley, executive director of Cuddle Party Headquarters, says that if you don’t get your touch needs met within three days, you may suffer emotional symptoms. Basically, you are a ticking time bomb with the deactivation code being a good foot rub.

Step 2: COMPROMISE Not feeling the whole “let me pay you to hold me” thing? Don’t sweat it. Make an appointment for a mani/pedi or massage session. That way, you get some touchy-feely action without the awkward factor. If you’re feeling bold, go to a salon just for a shampoo and blow dry. Most salons offer this service for around $15 to $20 and you’ll leave with a very happy head.

Step 3: KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES If you want to do it, do it. If you don’t, don’t. If it’s a maybe, don’t do it. Knowing your limits before you put yourself in the situation will put you more at ease during the session. It’s natural to feel weird about having a stranger entangle their limbs with yours, so this service is mostly for the bold, brave or super lonely.

Step 4: DRESS TO IMPRESS In the event you decide to go through with it, invest in some thicker clothing. Sweat pants are a no-no. They may be comfy, but unless you want to, um, risk an accident, wear jeans. With long Johns underneath. Stay protected, my friends.

Avoid the embarrassment altogether and be little spoon. Watch an unsexy documentary.

Check out “Oh, How They Dry! A Comparative Study of Wall Paints.” We’re not really sure if this is legit, but it seems like riveting material that will keep you very dry, indeed.

Step 5: KEEP AN OPEN MIND You’re paying $60, so make the session count.

If you go in thinking how awkward it’s going to be, you’re vibes will definitely affect the outcome of the therapy. It sounds goofy, but some people swear by this new phenomenon. Sigley says, “Usually clients feel a little awkward, and that’s generally because they feel awkward in situations like this anyway, and that’s why they’re hiring me. But it’s my job and my specialty to help put their nerves at ease.” So let them do their job and snuggle away.

Steak ‘n Shake is more than just your average burger joint. Founded 80 years ago exactly in February 1934 in Normal, Illinois, Steak ‘n Shake has spread its tasty steak burgers, fries and milkshakes all across the country and now it has finally come west. The newest location, on the north east corner of Mill Avenue and Seventh Street in Tempe, is the first one in the entire state of Arizona.

The new location takes Steak ‘n Shake’s brand and gives it a Mill makeover. The menu is slightly different and a bit more compressed, and the décor is more modern. Their new offerings also include beer on tap and wine.

In addition to their classic original burger and signature (and organic) steak burger, Steak ‘n Shake has a variety of specialty burgers. The tasty Frisco Melt on sourdough is available, along with options such as Western BBQ ‘n bacon, grilled Portobello ‘n Swiss, royale (a BLT with a fried egg), jalapeño crunch, and fresh guacamole.

You can also get a footlong hot dog (a chili cheese version is available) and a veggie melt for non-meat eaters. Their

thin, crispy fries are the perfect burger accompaniment, but in order to get the full experience, you have to get a shake as well.

For those that are new to Steak ‘n Shake, you have to understand that ordering a shake is no simple matter. Even when you know what you want, looking at the menu will probably make you rethink your choice. You can get two flavors at once, after all.

Their milkshakes are hand-dipped with fresh milk and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. The classic shakes include chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and banana. But the real kicker is their specialty shakes. Those include M&M’s, Butterfinger, cookies ‘n cream, mint cookies ‘n cream, cookie dough, ultimate banana, salted caramel pretzel, Heath Bar, peanut butter cup and chocolate banana.

It is worth repeating that you can get two flavors side-by-side, and create your own glorious milkshake mixture.

The newest location is within walking distance from ASU’s main campus. Diners have a choice of sitting inside or enjoying the beautiful, very non-Midwestern, weather outdoors. There’s nothing like sipping a nostalgic milkshake while the sun shines in early March.

The electronic cigarette boutique is just one of many stores in several states run by Casteel that focus on promoting a healthier alternative to the 300-orso carcinogens one can find in regular cigarettes.

But how will e-cigs prevail where the patch and the myriad traumatic television anti-smoking ads have largely failed?

“There are two components to the addiction,” Casteel says. “One of them is having something in your hands and the act of inhaling it, while the other is the nicotine itself.”

While nicotine has been shown to be “Breaking Bad” levels of addictive, it is believed to not be cancer-causing. An e-cig allows those hooked on the practice of huffing and puffing to get their fix without breathing in the more harmful elements that present themselves in the smoke.

Electronic cigarettes consist of a small tank that holds fluid with a coil that heats up and vaporizes the “juice” and a tip on which the user sucks on to mimic the motion of dragging on a cigarette. Casteel says their juices are made with organic materials and presented in a variety of different flavors which can be infused with anywhere from 0 to 23 mg of nicotine.

“Once you get off the cigarettes, you can diminish the amount of nicotine in the juice and get off of nicotine as well very quickly,” he says.

Casteel says he has received an overwhelmingly positive amount of feedback from his customer base through his company website and Facebook pages.

“Some people who have smoked for years will say that within two weeks they’ve started feeling better,” Casteel says. ”People have been able to go up and down stairs again and start back up at their gym. It seems the transformations are very sudden for some people.”

Aside from the health and cost benefits (you’ll spend approximately 35 percent of what you’re spending on those highly taxed cigarette cartons and e-cigs are refillable, according to Casteel) he says a big draw of his product is the fact that you won’t smell like an ashtray and it’s acceptable to vape almost everywhere.

As with many hobbies, the e-cig mods come in many shapes and sizes, as well as price points. Usually starting at around $100, those interested in the hobby aspect of it all can take advantage of free on-the-spot classes on how to build their mod by a trusted “vape nerd.” (Think of an Apple genius for your e-cig.)

With news that CVS will be ceasing sales of cigarettes come October and stringent restrictions against smoking being set in public areas, Casteel sees a bright future for his business.

“I really think that in ten years, there won’t be smokers,” he says. “I think America is going to keep making it harder and harder to smoke.”

Postino owners get back to college roots with new Tempe location Jorge Salazar • College Times With the school year halfway through and final exams looming on the horizon, Arizona State University students already have something to look forward when they come back to Tempe next semester. Postino, arguably Phoenix’s most popular wine cafe, will be opening its fourth location in what used to be the University’s Art Annex at the start of the fall 2014 semester.

Aptly named Postino ANX, the venue will serve as an anchor for ASU’s Recruitment Walk and streetscape, a future development that will include retail and green spaces, as well as university-run businesses.

Spearheaded by the Valley’s very own Upward Projects, the project brings co-owners Craig and Kris DeMarco and Lauren and Wyatt Bailey back to their collegiate roots.

“We all at one time or another worked on or off of Mill Avenue,” Craig says. “And when Lauren was at ASU and studied art, she actually ended up working at the building that was on College and Sixth Street, the Art Annex. So there’s lots of history.”

History itself is a factor that motivated the group become involved in the project.

Upward Projects is more than forthcoming about site selection being on the top of the list of priorities when looking at options for new establishments.

The Art Annex met their criteria, as it holds a historical importance for the surrounding college community. Previous Postino locations include a post office

building, a Jewish deli inside a ‘50s office building and a space in the heritage district in Old Town Gilbert.

“It was very serendipitous the way that we came across this deal, too,” Bailey says of the decision to open at her college workplace.

The opportunity presented itself after a canceled flight to Denver, after which the group cruised downtown Tempe together and casually spoke about the idea of having a venue in their old stomping grounds. After bringing the idea up to their architect, the group was informed of the Recruitment Walk project.

“It was pretty special and trippy that it was really because of us missing a flight to Denver because of weather,” she says.

Another aspect the group is excited about is what they’re calling downtown Tempe’s resurging density and diversity.

“It’s not just students,” Lauren says.

“We’re excited to see the more layers and different types of people and really diverse clientele, which is another thing that really appeals to Postino and our customers.”

Bailey is referring to the prospective business due to the development of the massive State Farm regional headquarters along Tempe Town Lake that’s expected to house between 5,000 to 7,000 employees, as well as the businesses ASU’s Recruitment Walk will bring to the table.

“We love the area and we’re huge Sun Devil fans,” Craig says. “Our connection to ASU really runs deep and I think that’s really important to us all being alumni.”

The wine café is expected to open on August 21, the first day of classes at ASU.

As a locally organized fundraising event, proceeds will benefit 49,000 Arizonians with reading disabilities.

“100 percent of the proceeds benefit Sun Sounds of Arizona, a reading and information access service for people who cannot read due to a disability. Many blind and low-vision Arizonans use Sun Sounds, along with veterans, returning from service with eye, head, or other injuries, which prevent reading,” says David Noble, Development director of Sun Sounds of Arizona.

As the longest running charity beer tasting event in the American Southwest, the festival is a way for microbreweries and craft brew houses to let beer connoisseurs do what they do best: drink beer.

Besides the beverages, attendees can look forward to live music and food from local venders and food trucks.

“Guests receive 24 sample tickets and a commemorative sample mug with their entry fee. They can choose from more than 250 different craft beers while listening to

For those unpatriotic Americans who don’t fancy a fine brew, the La Bocca Wine Garden is back this year to provide a variety of wines, which guests can use their sample tickets to taste.

Free parking and shuttles that take you from designated locations to the festival make getting home in one piece easy. Plus, Tempe Beach Park is close the light rail, so there are no excuses for not having a safe ride.

It pays to be a VIP at this festival, who can enter an hour before the 5,000 general admission ticket-holders flood the park.

“The VIP Area is my favorite. That gives me time to sample new brews and when the General Admission gate opens, I can retreat to the exclusive VIP area where I get a meal and can play in the casino...(for amusement only). I can also vote for my favorite brewer by putting a dollar or more in their box when I get my beer sample,” Noble says.

All vote proceeds are given to Sun Sounds of Arizona.

Brody Stevens is ready to push it Claire Cleveland • College Times Brody Stevens, an ASU graduate, is coming back to Tempe to headline his own show. Stevens was in “The Hangover” and “The Hangover Part II,” and has opened for Chelsea Handler and Dave Chappelle.

Stevens promises to bring laughs, crowd work, and possibly some percussion pieces.

College Times: So, you graduated from ASU with a communications degree.

What were your plans for after college?

Brody Stevens: First I wanted to be a baseball player. Then when I was done with baseball and I knew I couldn’t go on, because I was injured, I thought that “I’m a good talker” and I’d like to be a salesman...

But then my last semester I took an acting class. It was fun and I got a good reaction, so I got the “bug” from that a little bit, but I still thought that I was probably gonna be a salesman, because acting is hard. You can’t say, “Ok, I’m gonna be an actor and make my whole living acting,” but you gotta at least try. That’s what I did with baseball, I tried, I pushed it as far as I could go.

Does your catch line, “Yes, push it, believe,” relate to pushing your comedy as far as it can go?

I think there is a little bit of that; I think it is a little more comedy based word. I have other phrases but “push it, push and believe,” it’s just fun to say that. The name of my show “Enjoy It!” is a term I picked up when I was at Arizona State, my freshman year, at a McDonalds. I went there on a Sunday, over on Apache, homesick, basically. I would order a Big Mac or whatever and

I remember she [the cashier] would shuffle the tray across. Her attitude was great and she said “enjoy!” she was very happy and you would never get that at a McDonalds.

Then one day I went to a Wendy’s, I went to the drive thru there one night and I ordered a Frosty and she was working at the Wendy’s as well! I remember she popped out of the window to give me my chocolate frosty and she said “enjoy!” and I was like, whoa, she’s everywhere bringing positive energy. I had just started baseball and you’re with your baseball team and you say “enjoy” and that starts picking up, and then everyone picks up on it “enjoy it,” “enjoy that,” “enjoy us,” “enjoy me.” It turned into a pre-fix that all started from that lady working at McDonalds.

You will be coming to Tempe in March, what do you have in store for your audience?

Well, I can guarantee energy, I will bring that. I will bring jokes, I will bring crowd work, I will bring rants, positive rants, I will bring percussion, hopefully. Entertainment!

I am just going to bring entertainment, I am gonna push it. They know me, I’m going to go on stage and these people, they are gonna know that I went off my meds and I spent time in a hospital. They are going to know my relationship with my mother, these are things that not so many others have had to go out on the road and do stand-up comedy with.

4 things to know before heading out to a spring training game Christina Caldwell • College Times Cactus League spring training is in full swing beginning February 26. Several Major League Baseball teams will make their home at 10 different facilities in the Valley this spring. Teams include the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Athletics and more.

Spring in the Valley is like summer everywhere else, so be sure to soak up the mild temperatures while you still can.

That means it’s time to break out the beers, brats, bikinis and beach towels (and okay, sure, the bats and balls, or whatever.)

Let’s face it. Spring training is all about the party. Here’s what you need to know before you head out to the big game.

Don’t mess around with the sun

Dude, sunscreen. Bring it. Don’t bother with any of this “I don’t normally burn” crap. It is scientifically proven that the sun at spring training facilities is 20 times more potent than it is outside the stadium. Trust in science and bring an SPF of 45 or higher. You’ll still get a tan without the reddish hue. There’s no such thing as “lobster-chic.”

Sneaky snacks

Some facilities, like Surprise Stadium, allow fans to bring their own food

and non-alcoholic drinks in a clear plastic bag, which allows for easy security inspection. All stadiums have concessions, so unless you have one of those super-classy strap-on “beer guts” or “wine racks,” plan on buying booze and snacks there. Sneaking drinks in is really not worth the cost of getting kicked out, so do your research beforehand and know if the facility allows outside snacks and drinks, or if you should just bring extra cash for the concession stand.

Go for the cheapo seats

The cheapo seats, or lack thereof, are always where the party’s at. The lawn section is the best place to be. Sure, you’ll be in the sun, but you’ll catch a tan as you potentially catch a foul ball.

Bring a beach towel or blanket, and don’t be afraid to break out the bathing suits.

Spring training is as close to a beach vibe as we can possibly get in the middle of the desert, so come prepared to shed a bit of clothing.

Head out to the new stomping grounds

Cubs fans, rejoice! There’s a new centrally-located stadium made just for you. Located near Mesa Riverview, Cubs Park is shiny and new 146-acre site with lawn and stadium seating. 60 percent of the stadium is shaded at all times, but still don’t disregard our sunscreen advice!

Salt River Fields is also fairly new. The facility opened in 2011 and is home to the Colorado Rockies and our very own Arizona Diamondbacks.

Could Viva PHX become the Valley’s SXSW? Siera Whitten • Special to College Times

The Ataris is all grown up Ana Anguiano • College Times “Being grown up isn’t half as fun as growing up, these are the best days of our lives,” is a line from The Ataris’ song “In This Diary,” which propelled the indie pop rock band from Indiana to regular radio play in 2003. It’s also a line that I personally heard being used in a high school valedictorian speech that same year.

It’s been 10 years since the song and the album So Long, Astoria were released and blew fans away, but now that The Ataris are fully grown, the original line up is getting back together to tour the album and relive those days.

“It’s something really cool for the fans.

I don’t think it’s a really original idea, because a lot of bands have done it, but in this day and age if you can think of a clever way to get someone off a couch and get them to go to a show and hear a record that might have turned them on to your band or meant a lot to them, why not? Why not do something like that,”

Ataris front man Kristopher Roe says.

The band hasn’t played together in years, so they are taking all of February to rehearse for the tour. Roe says some of the songs on So Long, Astoria have never even been played live. However, the tour line up is only temporary. The band only plans on being together for the reunion tour, and afterwards Roe will go back to playing with his current Ataris incarnation.

“I’m just really happy to go out with my three old best friends again and have fun for a month and see how we interact as grown ups and not just young hooligans,” Roe says.

Roe says that sometimes he wishes he it was as easy to write a record like So Long, Astoria twice, but that it was a culmination of many factors and who he was at the time.

“When I wrote that album, I was reading this book ‘Go Now’ by the writer and artist Richard Hell, and there was a line in the book that said like, ‘memories are better than life’ and he

talks about how memories are more vivid when you’re in the place where they were created and how every day he tries to choose his path to create better memories,” he says.

Roe took those words to heart and went home to relive his childhood memories for inspiration. The memories that rushed back to him were not only personal but profound. He even sat in his car at 2 a.m. in front of his old childhood home. But now as an adult ten years later, Roe says the songs still mean a lot to him.

“The good thing about a song is that it takes on new meanings as you get older and I think anyone would kind of agree with that. There are so many songs that transport me back to where I was when I wrote it,” he says.

Music will bring Downtown Phoenix to life when Viva PHX rocks the city on Friday, March 7. Event planners hope to demonstrate the growing music scene and essence of Downtown Phoenix with over 50 national and local bands at 13 different venues.

Stateside Presents and Downtown Phoenix Partnership collaborated to create Phoenix’s own version of Austin’s South by Southwest.

The festival takes place at multiple downtown venues, including CityScape, Crescent Ballroom, Civic Space Park, San Carlos Hotel and the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center. CityScape will close down Central Avenue between Washington and Jefferson streets for the main stage, where headliners like The Neighborhood and Pinback will play.

Céline Rille, marketing director at CityScape, says the event will “encourage thousands of people to come downtown and experience how easy, walkable and fun it is.”

Each venue will have a particular genre whether it is pop, rock, indie or hip-hop.

“We will do the best we can to have each venue have its own feel. For the most part, all of the venues are within one block of each other,” says Charles Levy, owner of Stateside Presents.

The festival will feature young artists like The Senators and classic sounds like Sir MixA-lot, who Levy believes is “the cherry on top of the ice-cream sundae.”

Jesse Teer of The Senators, a local indie band, says the art scene is creating a sense of community in Downtown Phoenix.

“I think we have done a good job as a city and as an art community with getting people in one place, where as before in Phoenix I felt like the art scene was so fractured,” he says.

“I think it is going to be a giant party,” says Alyssa Lesto, administrative assistant at Stateside Presents. “No matter where you are it is going to be a good time because all of the bands are so good.”

The Senators are eager to play at Viva Phoenix, not only because it will be their first festival but also to meet new people and make connections.

“If we had a mission statement it would be: ‘Well we make good music but we make really good community around our music and this [Phoenix] is where we thrive,’” Teer says.

After this event, bands will look at Phoenix as a destination to play, Teer says. The Senators will be part of the crowd right after their set.

Actors forge an explosive friendship in ‘Pompeii’

Rene Rodriguez • The Miami Herald In the 3-D spectacle “Pompeii,” which opened Friday, February 21, Kit Harington and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje play slaves forced to fight in gladiator battles in giant arenas—at least until that pesky volcano starts acting up. To reveal that the two men start out as mortal enemies and end up as friends doesn’t spoil anything: Instead, it reveals that “Pompeii” is a disaster movie with an unusual emphasis on character. Yes, the destruction is awesome, but the people who are swept up in it make you care.

Because there are so many plotlines in the film, Harington, 28, and AkinnuoyeAgbaje, 47, don’t get a lot of screen time to depict their transformation from foes to allies. But during a recent stop in Miami to promote the film, the actors said developing a genuine connection was easy while prepping for the film.

“We didn’t have any choice but to spend time together,” Harington says.

“We were constantly at gladiator boot camp and training in the gym together.

It helped that Adewale is such a professional and lovely man. But by the time we started filming, you could see our

camaraderie on the screen.”

The two actors also had certain things in common: Both were born in London and burst into stardom via HBO shows: Akinnuoye-Agbaje spent four seasons playing the memorable Adebisi on “Oz,” while Harington is in his fourth season playing Jon Snow on the hit “Game of Thrones.”

Although actors who become famous playing iconic characters on TV often have difficulty being considered for other roles, both men say the attention their HBO shows brought them has been mostly a boon.

“It is definitely—excuse the pun—a double-edged sword,” Harington says about the snowballing popularity of “Game of Thrones.” “But without ‘Thrones’ I wouldn’t have been offered a movie like this. I love working on TV because it’s liberating. You get to spend six months on the same project, you’ve got steady work each year, and then you have six months to do what you like. You don’t have to do movies for money. You get to make them for passion. But yes, there are times when a TV role keeps you from doing some things you want to do.”

from working on TV,” Akinnuoye-Agbaje says. “If the material is good, nothing else matters. Good work begets good work. When you’re fortunate enough to work with HBO, where they make groundbreaking shows and really focus on character development, that has ramifications on your career. Everything I’ve done since, from ‘Lost’ to ‘The Bourne Identity,’ I’ve been hired based on my performance of that character on ‘Oz.’ So I could never knock it.”

With its gargantuan special effects, “Pompeii” requires a leap of faith from its actors (the cast includes Kiefer Sutherland and Carrie-Anne Moss) to hope the director will be able to bring to life what’s written on the page. But Harington and Akinnuoye-Agbaje say they didn’t hesitate to put their trust in the hands of filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (the “Resident Evil” movies, “Death Race”).

“I knew I would be in good hands, because there are few directors out there who have as much experience with 3-D special effects as Paul,” Harington says.

“He knows what he’s doing with this stuff.

And when he’s directing you, he knows exactly what he wants. That’s a great place to be for an actor.”

Pity Paul W.S. Anderson. He’s directed so many awful movies, most of them with “Resident Evil” and “Death Race” in the title, that Sony-Tristar ineptly elected to dump his “Pompeii” at the end of February, to hide it from movie critics until after the last minute.

What Anderson delivers this one time is a genuine spectacle, a gladiator movie with a volcano in the middle of it.

And though I thought I’d never type these words in association with a Paul W.S. Anderson picture, it’s not half bad. The acting is flat, the story is corny and old-fashioned and takes too long to get going. The dialogue is a tad old school, too. (“Is this the end of the world?”)

But the fights are furious. And one hour in, when Mount Vesuvius does what we know it did in 72 A.D., this is about as close to the real deal as we’d ever want to see.

Years before that eruption, a boy survives the massacre of his British Isles family at the hands of the Romans. He’s sold into slavery and grows up to become “The Celt”—able to cut up guys literally twice his size.

That’s when Milo, the Celt (Kit Harington of “Game of Thrones”), is shipped off to Pompeii, to fight in the arena and become smitten with a young noblewoman, Cassia (Emily Browning). Her parents (Carrie-Anne Moss and Jared Harris) would never approve.

But since she’s being pursued by the evil Senator Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland), maybe Milo has a shot.

“I will break you,” the senator sweet-talks her, “and you will STAY broken.”

Anderson, a graceless and heartless filmmaker on most projects, lets only a hint of humanity make its way into “Pompeii.” The opening shots are of body molds, preserved by ash, pitiful images of suffering that humanized this historicaltragedy.

Jean Frenette’s fights, hurling Harington against the charming hulk Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, are first rate. And Sutherland makes a perfectly venal villain.

“Pompeii” isn’t anybody’s idea of high art or flawless history. It’s too long, there are few light touches and the leads don’t have enough moments to set off sparks that aren’t volcanic in origin. But it has more heart than your average sword-and-sorcery piece, and effects that could have lifted Anderson out of the Z-grade He could have escaped his past, if only his studio had let him.

Robert Randolph wants to pass on the tools of the guitar trade Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Considered by Rolling Stone to be one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, Robert Randolph is a firm believer that the arts should be included in school curriculums. As a matter of fact, he’s appalled by school districts that have removed music programs.

“I don’t know whose idea it was that these kids don’t need this stuff,” says Randolph, who plays the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix on Tuesday, March 4.

“They look around and kids are bored and doing all these different things—joining gangs and so forth, killing each other and winding up on all sorts of addictive drugs.

It’s really a sad situation.”

So Randolph did something about it. He modestly reveals that he has been working on a music and arts school in New Jersey.

A quick search of the Internet shows it’s actually called Robert Randolph Music and Arts Resource Center.

“That’s a lot of work,” says the pedal steel guitarist. “I’m just trying to get something together for these kids in the inner city where I grew up. You don’t really have another way for these kids to find out really what they want to do. In this day, kids really don’t know what’s up or down.

Schools have taken out the arts. It’s cool to be there and be a role model. Not only that, but I get to help kids figure out what they want to do.”

That’s just one of Randolph’s projects for 2014. Randolph and his funk and soul outfit, the Family Band, released their newest studio album, Lickety Split, last summer on Blue Note Records and have been touring throughout the United States and Europe

since its release. Besides his tour, he is working on a new album, which he hopes to put out in May or June.

“We’ve just been keeping the engine rolling,” he says. “We’re going to do it the old-school way—just keep rolling out records.

We’ve got so much new energy surrounding the band. We’ve written all these great songs. It’s going to be a fun year.”

Randolph, who says he travels to Flagstaff on occasion with his guitar to write music, has been penning new tunes whenever he gets the chance.

“I just get my guitar and I kind of just go for it,” he says with a laugh. “I really have to have a clear mind and just enjoy myself.

It’s kind of weird now, the way it all comes together. I just grab a guitar and start playing. It’s been a fun time.”

Just as fun, he explains, are his live shows. He describes them as high energy— with a few surprises.

“We get everybody dancing,” he says.

“Sometimes we’ll pull people out of the audience and let them jam with us. It’s a real energetic mixture of rock, gospel, blues and country. It’ll be a fun time.”

But mostly, the shows give Randolph the opportunity to show off those Rolling Stoneapproved guitar licks.

“That was awesome to be on that list with those guys,” he says. “It’s amazing to be appreciated, that I belong up there with the upper echelon with guitar heroes and guitar icons and so forth. It was really fun to be on that list. It keeps me on my toes.”

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Electro and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan, who plays Marquee Theatre on Saturday, March 8, is a longtime advocate of artist independence. Best known for his 1980 hit “Cars,” Numan co-produced his latest album, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), which was released on his label, Machine Music.

The album features co-production work by frequent collaborator Ade Fenson and guitar work from Nine Inch Nails axman Robin Finck.

The Englishman, who permanently moved to the United States in 2012, has influenced a slew of artists ranging from Prince to Queens of the Stone Age, from The Foo Fighters to Kanye West. He just finished the score to the animated film “From Inside.”

College Times: How have your shows been in Phoenix/Tempe in the past? Any fond memories of Arizona?

Numan: My strongest memory of playing in Arizona (or trying to get there at least) was the tour bus getting raided by some enthusiastic policemen looking for drugs or illegals, I wasn’t entirely sure which. We were all thrown out of our bunks in the early hours and made to sit out on the street while they went through the bus with some angry mini-dog looking for illegal substances or stowaways. I was surrounded and questioned for quite some time, as one of my traitorous band members pointed me out to the policeman in charge as the “leader,” who then insisted that if I confessed everything would be OK. I had nothing to confess, nothing was found obviously, despite the mini-dogs best efforts, and we were sent on our way.

Congratulations on the success

of Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind). Why do you think you’ve been successful at maintaining a long career, while other artists haven’t been as successful?

I am very pleased with the reaction to the album. It’s been amazing, actually. I really love being in a band, making music and touring. I have never done it just to make money or to try and be famous. I think, because of that, when things have not been going so well I remained in love with just being in a band. I just kept my head down, kept working, waited for things to turn around. I can tour and play in front of 50 people or 50,000, and I still enjoy it.

I understand that the writing of Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) was a very trying experience. I read that you suffered from depression during the making of the album.

The depression really started to hit me in 2008, but I wasn’t diagnosed until 2009, I think. I was on medication for about two and a half years, maybe three. In that time I didn’t write anything, not a single song as far as I can remember. It was only when I came off the tablets that my old drive came back, the old me came back I suppose, and all the experiences that I had been through with the depression became the subject matter for the new Splinter album. So, in a way, writing the album was the final stage of my getting better. By writing about it, I was able to understand it and deal with it in a way that has left me entirely scar free, as far as I can tell.

A Mexican Horror Story Jorge Salazar • College Times The following events totally happened and are entirely true... at least in Jorge Salazar’s head.

Spring break is supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation. For my friends and me, it proved to be anything but the idyllic MTV-inspired experience we had in mind.

The more my friend Kelly and I talk about it, the less it makes sense.

“It was like a horror movie came to life,” she’ll tell me while wiping black mascara tears off her face. “Bad things aren’t supposed to happen to pretty people.”

Jane, our friend, was a self-described “SeLfiE KwEEN” per her Instagram profile.

It was her quest to document her beauty that ultimately led to her demise.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Kelly will tell anyone who lends an ear.

“She was climbing the cliff screaming ‘YOLO, but don’t die’ like she always did.”

Unfortunately, Jane couldn’t honor the second half of her mantra.

We had all traveled to what Jane said was an upscale resort in the Mexican tourist Mecca of Rocky Point. Instead of the paradise we envisioned, we ended up in a living nightmare.

Our struggle started soon after entering the town and stopping at a local taco stand. It spiraled downward quickly from then on.

“We eat traditional Mexican food all the time,” said Kelly to Jane as I rolled my eyes behind them.

But when we asked the taco man for the gluten-free burrito bowl like we do at Chipotle, he simply stared. Kelly asked me to translate, which I thought was racist.

The next thing I remember was hearing a bloodcurdling scream. Jane, who was attempting to use a translation app, stared at her phone in shock.

“I have no service,” she openly sobbed.

“My selfie schedule is ruined!”

I’ve never seen someone so broken.

The girls, who had gone through a master cleanse the week prior to prepare their bikini bodies, ordered their food through pointing and charades.

After eating, we arrived at the hotel room. Instead of luxurious rooms with queen-sized beds and down comforters, there was a single twin bed and a pair of scratchy blankets.

Jane excused herself to the bathroom to collect her thoughts, which Kelly and I knew was code for something gross.

Suddenly, Kelly and I winced as shrieking pierced our ears. We grabbed a box of matches before running to Jane’s aide.

With a far-away look in her eyes, her lips trembled as she exited the bathroom.

“One-ply,” is all she would say.

We thought the rest of the evening would be more relaxing, until Jane turned on the small television that stood by the bed and began wailing.

“It was like a pterodactyl in labor,” Kelly always says. “I definitely won’t miss that.”

Having discovered the hotel’s lack of basic cable, we were all overcome with grief over missing our favorite show, “Pretty Little Liars.” Knowing Jane will never find out who killed Ali really hurts.

“Everything is in Spanish and static-y.” sobbed Jane. “This is like ‘The Ring’ and I’m going to die in seven days.”

She died that night.

Wanting to snap the perfect shot for the “Duck Lips Across the World” photography series she was working on as her senior project, Jane climbed to the top of a cliff overlooking the violent waves off the coast of Rocky Point. Kelly and I feared the box of wine we chugged beforehand had gotten the best of her.

It did. In the blink of an eye, Jane slipped and flailed off the cliff and into the rocky waters below. The only thing we were able to recover was her phone and that final #deathselfie. It was really pretty.
