Coyotes, ASU excited for arena partnership BY ZAKKARY BROG

Glendale Star Staff Writer

Critics say hockey doesn’t belong in Arizona. But don’t say that to ASU or the Arizona Coyotes. Amid a wave of negativity across North America, the two sides agreed to a deal that will keep the Coyotes in the Valley at least through the next three years. “This was a natural for us,” said Morgan Olsen, ASU executive vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer, during a Feb. 14 press conference. “Our plan all along with Novus (Innovation Zone), and with the multipurpose arena, was to bring additional things into the university: community events, shows,

concerts, etc. So, now we have this opportunity to work with the Coyotes as a major tenant for the next couple of years, which is very exciting to us. … It’s going to be an incredible facility, and now we have even more great content to share with everyone in the Valley.” Coyotes President and Chief Executive Officer Xavier A. Gutierrez is looking forward to the partnership as well. “Obviously, incredible opportunity for us as an organization to be in a brand-new facility, state of the art, and here in the heart of Tempe,” Gutierrez said. “Incredible amount of energy,

of innovation, and of really top-of-mind thought leadership that is happening on this campus. We were excited to be a part of it. We absolutely believe this is going to be the best experience in all of the NHL. It is going to be not only a state-of-the-art facility, but it’s going to be intimate.” Gutierrez called the sightlines “incredible” and the games a hot ticket. “It’s going to be packed,” he added. “This is the experience that we know our fans, our partners, our players, everyone SEE COYOTES PAGE 3

Bellevue Heights Church’s Pastor Rob Boyd is proud of his congregation’s strength and drive. For 50 years, members have upheld Bellevue Heights Church’s beliefs. To celebrate, Boyd offered a series of sermons called “A Season of Thankfulness.” They focused on building a strong church anchored by biblical principles and the mission statement “Following Jesus, Loving God,

Loving His Church, Loving His World.” “It’s a great reminder of men and women of faith who put forth the time, the effort and the energy to start a church in an area where there was no church,” Boyd said. “We are thankful that people had a vision to plant a church in Sun City 50 years ago. We are thankful that they laid a solid foundation on which we can build our church today. We are thankful that they per-
