ASU projects preach forgiveness and humanity in college and beyond Jorge Salazar • College Times We’ve all been there. You have an argument with one of your besties and, before you know it, your eyes are shooting daggers at each other every time you cross paths. Eventually, either one of you apologizes begrudgingly or you both let the resentment get the best of you and the friendship you had grown to cherish becomes a thing of melancholic memories.

The truth is, forgiveness, like most things in life, is easier said than done. And chances are you are doing it wrong.

Dayna Kloeber, an associate faculty member with the ASU New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, says the fault lies with most people not understanding what forgiving actually means.

“From a scholarly perspective, forgiveness is about truly letting go of the desire of revenge, bitterness, anger and hatred,” she says. “It’s knowing that you have a right to it, but choosing to forgo it anyway.”

Kloeber says many believe that forgiving is simply forgetting, reconciling or excusing the behavior that hurts you. Instead, she says, the process of forgiveness is understanding what happened and caring enough to investigate and think about the other person’s perspective.

Douglas Kelley, a researcher and professor at the college, says the first

response for many may not be to explore resolutions to these feelings productively or to even address them at all.

“What we’re taught in western culture is to fight back,” Kelley says. “And we tend to conceptualize that in an aggressive manner or holding your ground by attacking back.”

Kelley believes this type of behavior often times makes addressing your hurt with the person who inflicted it a difficult process, since most people have not been taught how.

Such is the mission of the Forgiveness Tree project, which Kelley and Koebler have implemented along with fellow faculty member Vince Waldron.

The project centers around a “Forgiveness Tree ceremony.” The ceremony involves teaching community members the correct concept of forgiveness and how it can be achieved. Community members anonymously write what they have learned about forgiving others and themselves on paper leaves, which are then placed on a symbolic tree set in a prominent community location to serve as a reminder of their progress.

Kloeber, who was inspired by a student’s church activity, first put the concept of the Forgiveness Tree to the test during a retreat for ASU sorority Delta Gamma in order to foster better quality relationships between the close to 150 young women.

Kloeber says the feedback she received from the sorority sisters was positive and

proved it made a difference in how they approached forgiveness.

“Equally compelling were the messages that we received on the leaves,” she says.

“In general, the messages were very powerful and you could tell a lot of young ladies gave a tremendous amount of thought into their relationships with friends, parents and siblings.”

Kelley, who has been doing research on the subject matter with Waldron since the late ‘90s, says the college setting is an appropriate venue to emphasize this learning of forgiveness.

“Developmentally, the traditional aged college students are really in the process of forming their identity more firmly out of the home,” he says.

For many young adults experiencing independence for the first time, living in communities like sororities and fraternities opens opportunities for hurt that happens when establishing relationships and your own personal identity.

“So the goal in this project is really to help people understand not just in an individual level,” Kelley says. “But to understand how we become forgiving communities, where it becomes a predominant value to love and forgive one another and to grow, heal and become fully human.”

Dr. Neal A. Lester, foundation professor of English at ASU, also believes in the

importance of community involvement to promote values such as forgiveness.

As director of Project Humanities, he spearheads a movement that calls for personal responsibility to ourselves and society with a movement called Humanities 101.

“Humanity 101 is a focus on seven principles that we think are foundational to any and all success,” he says.

Including forgiveness, said principles are compassion, empathy, integrity, respect, kindness and self-reflection. Dr. Lester’s project pushes for powerful communication and character and community-building through talking, listening and connecting to reinforce these values.

“We see these as being fundamental,” he says. “That you don’t have to teach people about them, you remind people that there are things that control our moral compass.”

The movement kicks off with a series of events running through February 15 in the form of film discussions, lecture series and workshops and will continue into the fall semester. With partnerships that include the Tempe Arts Festival, Dr. Lester envisions Humanity 101 as a movement that transcends our college campuses.

“This starts at ASU,” he says. “But ideally this becomes something that’s local, national and even global.”

The minds behind the Forgiveness Tree Project are also optimistic about the future of their project. They will be expanding their project to reach more schools and community groups within the Phoenix area thanks to generous donations via online crowd funding. With seven days before their crowdsourcing deadline, the group has surpassed their goal by over $2000.

Alongside ASU’s Northlight Art Gallery they will be hosting a Forgiveness Tree ceremony during the month of March.

Inmates from the Pinal County Adult Detention Center will be making the leaves for the Forgiveness Tree, which will remain in a public area so passersby can add to it as they visit the venue.

Tuna the cat is number one, that’s who!

Dumbledore’s Army, ASU’s ‘Harry Potter’ Club Jorge Salazar • College Times Seven books, eight movies and its own theme park would make you think the phenomenon that ushered in a new generation of young readers would have lost its steam by now. A magical world filled with wizards, werewolves and goblins is normally considered child’s play.

Nevertheless, Harry Potter has become a cultural icon that’s here to stay if his now grown-up fandom has anything to say about it.

As part of the fandom, ASU’s very own Dumbledore’s Army is more than happy to keep the good wizard’s name alive. Now, before you imagine a group of college students running around in cloaks, president and co-founder Holly Solis would like to have a word with you.

“That’s the biggest obstacle I face when I tell somebody I’m the president of a ‘Harry Potter’ club,” she says. “We’re actually mature adults that are into literature.”

College Times: When did you form ASU’s Dumbledore’s Army?

Solis: It was four years ago that I started this club. I had met a friend and we both liked “Harry Potter.” We both thought it would be cool if we found other people that were also into “Harry Potter” and started a club. So we sat down, wrote out the constitution and filled out all the paperwork.

What kind of events do you participate in?

We put on a lot of themed events. We have wizard duels and wizard chess. We are going to have a Gringott’s casino night. We had a Yule Ball and a Harry Potter-themed murder mystery. We do geek trivia, book discussions and movie viewing.

We did a Triwizard Tournament and a Horcrux hunt on campus. Also, we did a “Harry Potter”/”Hunger Games” kind of competition, where you had to pick a potion and act out what it does to you. It’s been really fun.

You have a “sorting hat ceremony” for new members. How does that work?

We call their name, sit them down and have them put on the hat. Then we ask them a couple of questions and tell them what house they’re in. Before, we used to be divided into houses, but now we’re divided into schools because we had a really uneven number of people. So now we have Durmstrang, Beauxbatons, Hogwarts and Salem. They get sorted into a house and then into a school.

Do houses get as competitive as in the books?

Every event we have is usually an opportunity to get school points, so we have a House Cup competition for the entire year. And they are always saying “we’re getting points for this” and “we need to get points for that.” We just had a trivia game and it got really heated.

Cats have always been known for their independent and sassy purr-sonalities (pardon the pun). And their penchant for becoming adorable Internet memes really does make them the cooler household pet option right meow (OK, I’m done.)

The crazy cat lady inside me bubbled to the surface when I saw the local Acro-Cat tour dates on their official website.

Let’s make one thing clear: I realized the ridiculousness of the event and my excitement the moment I successfully RSVP’d with Samantha Martin, the trainer and brain behind Acro-Cats. Nevertheless, when I pulled into downtown’s Playhouse on the Park parking lot and noticed the purple tour bus adorned with cat decals and a feline face painted on the hood, the absurdity became a non-factor.

Walking into the venue, I had to stop myself from buying souvenir cat ears by reminding myself I wasn’t a middle school Goth girl. The welcome table also held refrigerator magnets with photos of the feline stars, as well as shirts and kits for training your very own Acro-Cat. The beginning of the show included a disclaimer by Martin, wherein we were encouraged to lower our expectations.

Bringing a groundhog on stage certainly drove the point home, as the adorable ball of fluff tried to hit a gong.

Much of the show continued in the same fashion, with the trainer and her assistant clicking at the cats to perform their tricks.

Even though many of the cats looked more

interested in stretching and looking for food than putting on a performance, for the most part the crowd laughed along and cheered good-naturedly. The cats jumped through hoops, pushed shopping carts and jumped across stools.

Martin took time between acts to speak about her history with the AcroCats and the hilarious reality of being the quintessential crazy cat lady (tip: keep cat training out of the kitchen unless you enjoy eating cat hair), while encouraging the audience to adopt and support shelters.

Halfway through the show, the star of the night finally made its appearance.

Martin had warned us that Tuna, the white cat in all of the promotional materials, was a bit of a diva. I can attest that truer words have never been spoken, as evidenced when the sassy feline clawed at one of the attendants during a bell ringing competition against Cluck Norris, the resident chicken.

I can honestly say that the last time I cheered for a chicken that loud was at a KFC drive thru and am willing to bet Tuna destroyed her dressing room and swore off poultry after losing the crowd vote.

The evening was finally topped off by a performance of the troupe’s very own Rock Cats (Seriously, it’s a rock band comprised of cats), accompanied by crowd favorite Cluck on the cymbal.

It was after I had walked out of the venue that I realized that I no longer had to live in a closet of my own creation and that I could finally let my metaphorical cat flag fly. Seeing Martin and the obvious love she had for her felines, I knew I would be in good company. ecollegetimes.com

Since you probably won’t be recreating the spaghetti kiss from “Lady and the Tramp,” you should still be able to enjoy some hearty Italian food on Valentine’s Day. Fill a two cup microwaveable bowl with half a cup of pastina-style pasta and one cup of water. Cook in the microwave for five minutes, or until the pasta is soft, then let cool. Place a large Portobello mushroom upside down on a plate and fill with the pasta. Add parmesan cheese, diced tomatoes and basil to taste.

Then add an egg, two tablespoons of milk and two tablespoons of sugar and mix together until nice and gooey. Since this edition of College Kitchen isn’t called Microwave Cooking for Couples, add as many chocolate chip morsels as your heart and stomach desire. Place the bowl in the microwave for five minutes on high. Once it’s finished cooking, let it stand for ten minutes and then flip the bowl over onto a plate.

Mix one cup milk, two teaspoons corn starch and a dash of salt in a two cup microwaveable bowl. Add a cup of chocolate chips (you can use those heart shaped chocolates if you want to be dramatic about it) and put the bowl into the microwave for two minutes. Now that it’s nice and hot, mix the chocolate fully into the milk until it’s dark.

The Bass Oasis Deep in the desert there’s a party unlike any other. Kandi kids will welcome you, as long as you’re willing to make the drive.

The saccharin “Sesame Street” theme blares into the air—but before nostalgia has a chance to sink in, a rage-worthy bassline explodes into the otherwise vacant desert. Never before has the backdrop to the antics of felt-covered children’s characters contained such filthy beats.

Kandi kids, as they’re known, rotate in and out of where the air isn’t-so-sweet.

Instead, clouds of dust arise around them. They break the rhythm of their pounding feet to warm up, reaching their neon gloves over the fire to defrost numb fingers.

A 17-year-old, dressed in beads, chews a pacifier between cigarette tokes, proclaiming his love for happy hardcore—a genre of EDM best described as the crossbreeding of raunchy breakbeat and feel good vibes.

Tonight, the wildest party in Arizona takes place miles and miles away from city lights, deeper into the desert than your average partygoer is willing to go for a good time. But then again, these aren’t your average partygoers.

The drum diary I’m preparing to become one of them.

As homage to journalist and beloved hedonist Hunter S. Thompson, I don yellow shades, a red Hawaiian button up and a fisherman’s hat. I complete the get up by coyly quoting “Fear and Loathing.”

Some experienced ravers have decided to be my sherpas into the desert scene east of the Valley.

Becca, better known by her rave name “Cloud,” scours a Facebook event page every 20 to 30 minutes, waiting for a hotline number to pop up. There we’ll find our destination.

Because of the quasi-legal nature of these events, details are cryptic. Tonight’s festivities have been dubbed “Bassaholics Anonymous” and will revolve around

happy hardcore hits. Because of the music’s blend of feel-good, childlike bliss and adult debauchery, I wholly expect to see ravers blend Pokemon with Goth fashion.

“Alright! The number is up,” Cloud says dialing away into her smartphone.

A recording describes an hours-long drive with dirt pathways, twist and turns, all leading up to the promise of a good time. Location changes are not uncommon, and because these parties are located just outside of nowhere, the whole set up is DIY. The group gathers the essentials: water, fuel, clothing, blankets, beads, bottles, glow sticks, gloves, neon tethered weights and fuzzy hats, all get tossed into bags.

“Cause that’s what we are all about, fuzzy hats,” Cloud says.

No necessity can be compromised. The party goes till sun up, after all.

“My advice? Bring water. Water, water, water,” Cloud says. “And dress for

weather. T-shirt, long sleeves, jackets. In the desert, things can change fast.”

We pile into a tan sedan. Everyone is ass-to-ankles in the backseat, our feet hovering over numerous string backpacks filled with rave toys.

Desert your worries We have reached the undisclosed location. No road signs, no camp ground notices, no cell phone reception. It’s so far out we think we are lost until we stumble right on top of it. Purple lights flash and the bass thuds through the vast, dusty landscape. The distinct heartbeat of an all-night party pounds under silent stars.

Bassaholics Anonymous has gone all-out for the event, building a climbing structure directly above the DJ booth.

Brave souls climb up and across the structure, fist-pumping to the beat.

Underneath the spectacle is a long-haired DJ, loosely holding a cigarette in his lips.

With a casual look on his face, Jangles spins his brand of happy hardcore.

These raunchy jams are complete with Yoshi cheers and power-up sounds—like cramming a Super Nintendo full of steroids.

“I would recommend the desert to everyone,” Jangles says. “Unless you really don’t like techno or something.”

Electronic music has certainly had its moment to shine in recent years. Jangles points out that today’s Top 40 hits are heavily influenced by dance music in general. Having played plenty of venue shows before, Jangles can honestly say he prefers the desert scene because of the tightly-knit community.

“People in the desert really want to be there,” Jangles says. “No one drives two-and-a-half hours into the middle of nowhere unless they really want to experience the music.”

All in the family Everything is traded and swapped, Cloud says. “After an hour, money means nothing out there,” she says. “Not that you have to do anything. Plenty of people don’t.

It’s their choice.”

A few students in the car start talking about classes, jobs and the like—something Jangles doesn’t recommend for desert dancers.

“When you are out in the desert, forget about everything,” Jangles says. “This is not the time for drama or for any of that weekday crap. Just let go and enjoy the music!”

As you might expect, there are no

“All night this kept happening. In the early morning, everyone sat in a circle around [the camp fire] and sang ‘Kumbaya,’” He laughs. “It was legit.”

Maybe it’s the cold desert air and starlight. Maybe it’s the music. Maybe it’s the pheromone-laden clothing they’ve been sweating into for four hours. Whatever it is, something magical draws everyone together out there.

Abigail, who goes by the name “Ivy” after her “rave mother” discovered her interest in the Batman character, met Jangles, now her boyfriend, at a rave.

“I am not raver, really,” she admits.

“Just a hippie who fell in love with happy hardcore.”

After an hour, money means nothing out there. Not that you have to do anything. Plenty of people don’t.

Jangles learned to spin vinyl before anything else because he saw it as the biggest challenge. As a DJ he has played trance, hardcore, dubstep and more, but his true passion is happy hardcore.

“With happy hardcore, I can do whatever I want,” he says. “If I want to play a track on top of another song, I’ll do that.

Then drop both at the same time. There’s no restraints, just as long as they can dance to it.”

Ed Ward Oh, who prefers to use his rave moniker, is a longtime raver but a new Arizona resident. Since being in the state, he’s made the trek to the desert nearly twice a weekend. Ed Ward Oh fashions two lights on a shoe string. The low-tech rave toy has no technique. Ed Ward Oh says he is using it to trip people out as a joke.

Surprisingly, a small audience is interested in his invention. It’s something they have never seen before. A few people ask him how to use it.

“You just do stuff with it,” He says flippantly. “You just gotta make it groovy, man.”

He says he loves raves because he is able to cut loose with pretty much everybody.

“I just kept feeding shots to Jangles,” Ed Ward Oh says. “I’m like, ‘Hey, man. I like that song, want a shot?’ ‘Hey, man. I like your shirt, here’s a shot.’ ‘Hey, man. I liked your set, didn’t you want a shot?’”

Ravers stomp on the uneven ground until the cold air in their lungs gets to be too much. As the cold wind slowly kills the fire, six college freshman huddle into a Crown Victoria to puff away at a glass hookah. Everyone in the car shouts over each other, regaling about their most recent raves, parties and concerts. Outside, clandestine hands pass pills, powders, liquid drops. Or in the words of Hunter S. Thompson, “A whole multicolored universe of uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.”

However, the rave community lives by, and expects you to live by, one simple credo: PLUR. Peace, Love, Unity and Respect are the cornerstones of rave culture. It’s why people lug firewood to the camp site. It’s why ticket takers check on vehicles making their exit, to ensure the driver is safe enough to be on the road. It’s why capable people look around for someone else’s lost cell phone and keys at 4 a.m.

“Without respect it’s not PLUR,” Jangles says.

Cloud says she is in the desert nearly every weekend and has created plenty of relationships with likeminded desert dwellers.

“Everyone has been super nice,” Cloud says. “We are pretty dedicated ravers. I know almost everyone out here by now.”

Designated drivers try to gather up their friends, knowing these raves walk the border of totally legal festivities and old timey outlaw antics.

“All amplified sound in the desert is illegal, except in Gilbert,” Jangles says. “[Organizers] pay for a camping permit, so they have a reason to be there at least.”

Shutting down a rave is no simple task.

Depending on the number of people, set ups, DJ booths, and vendors, it can be a time consuming process.

Jangles remembers a desert party where nearly 1,000 ravers gathered for a multi-stage set up.

“It took two to three hours to get everyone to leave,” Jangles says.

“It was my second rave. I saw this guy wearing a top hat with a white ribbon.

That’s not something you usually see out here,” Cloud says. “My man’s got some style, I’ll give him that.”

Cloud and her boyfriend didn’t really connect until another desert party—a memorial rave for Speck, the rave dog.

The donation-only rave constructed an eight-foot pressed wood Chihuahua, which was decorated in memory of the beloved party pet, who attended all the raves. As hundreds of ravers joined the scene, the wooden dog was doused in gasoline and ignited in his memory.

“It’s just so tribal in the desert,” Jangles says. “That’s why I love it.”

With its lights off, a large white SUV comes barreling over the desert landscape, pulling up right behind a smoke-filled Crown Victoria. Suddenly, the police vehicle flicks on its headlights and beacons. The strobing red and blue send ripple of panic through the rave. These must be the only flashing light ravers don’t like.

Two officers exit the vehicle casually, ignoring the passing tribe of kandi kids in black sweatshirts. The two cops walk up to the DJ booth, strobes still flashing. The music staggers as the producer tries to shut down the festivities.

“You sat there on the way here,” Ed Ward Oh says.

“Oh my god! Shut up and just get in, it’s like you’re five years old,” Cloud says.

All around us engines idle. Everyone is waiting, unsure what to do around the lawmen. But then something curious happens. The cops visiting the DJ booth head back to their car and, just as mysteriously as they came, disappear into a cloud of dust.

“So, they just left?” Ed Ward Oh says.

“Do we have to leave?”

“I don’t know,” Cloud says. “I guess we should head out. The vibe is dead anyway.”

Crammed in the backseat with a bunch of sweaty ravers, everyone clammers over each other to share their experiences from just a few hours before. Most stories begin with “How sick was...” or “I can’t believe...”

The whole ride is smooth sailing. After all, no sane person would still be out at this time of night. Pulling into a gas station, we urgently refuel our bodies on chips, protein bars and plenty of water.

Never wanting the party to end, Ed Ward Oh says, “We are doing this again tomorrow, right?” He begins to chant along with the popular Knife Party song, “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat.” I, on the other hand, can feel the exhaustion setting in.

As soon I get home, the thick scent of campfire smoke permeates from every fiber of my clothes. I peel off my soiled Gonzo get up and hop directly into the shower.

That’s how you know you’ve got the right pieces,” she says Noland says a big mistake women make is buying something with another person in mind, thinking it will be something they will like.

“Do not buy your lingerie for someone else,” she says. “A lot of times women put lingerie on and they don’t feel good about it, but they think it’s what he’ll like. The truth is men don’t have an opinion. They like it all.”

Abby Bella is a dance studio with a twist. While ordinary dance studios in the Phoenix area focus mostly on training new generations of young dancers, Abby Bella’s mission is to teach adults that want to do a little more than two-step.

Teresa Paul Daie, the brains behind Abby Bella, opened doors to the public in 2008.

Paul Daie had done little dancing since her college disco days, but the idea to run her own studio suddenly popped into her head after waking up from a surgical procedure.

She says watching “Dirty Dancing” before the operation may have had some influence on the decision.

“I was doing it for me,” she says. “I was a 50-year-old woman and I wanted to learn how to dance.”

Paule Daie found she was not alone.

“There are a lot of different people,” she says of Abby Bella members. “We have kids that danced all their lives that have no place to go at 16 and adults who were once professional dancers and want to keep dancing.”

When the studio first opened it offered classes in jazz, hip hop, ballet and tap. As membership grew, so did the repertoire of classes.

Abby Bella has expanded to provide fitness classes, such as Zumba and cardio dance parties, while also providing technique classes like Bollywood and belly dancing.

Todd Bailey, a native Arizonan who has performed on Broadway and many dance companies abroad, leads the technique class at the studio. Bombshell Burlesque teaches students the art of knocking your

“It’s about teasing and being flirty with many parts of your body,” says Bailey, who makes it clear these types of classes are not about stripping or being raunchy.

Paul Daie agrees with Bailey, adding that Abby Bella and its classes have fostered a community between the members.

“We’ve had people come in here after life changing experiences,” says Paul Daie.

“They come here to feel better and they blossom.”

Maricopa County gained residents from nearly 1,000 counties across the U.S.—from Pinal County to as far away as Washington County, Maine—and lost residents to an even wider swath, the Census Bureau reports.

But within Arizona, Maricopa saw a net loss of population to other counties, while Pinal and Pima had net gains of in-state residents between 2007 to 2011, the latest years for which numbers are available.

Experts say the shifts could be driven by anything from the movement of retirees or college students to a search for jobs or affordable housing. They also noted that the report released last week, “2007-2011 County-to-County Migration Flows,” covers a period that included much of the recession.

“Job growth is typically one important factor that will drive migration flows,” says George Hammond, an economist and professor at the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona.

He says the economic downturn had a different effect on Phoenix and Tucson, which could be surfacing in the migration numbers. During the economic downturn, Phoenix had a peak-to-trough job loss of 13 percent while Tucson had a job loss of 9 percent.

That was echoed by Tom Rex of Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, who says migration flows are very much tied to economic factors.

Rex noted that the years in the latest Census data include the recession.

That had a large impact on Arizona and specifically on Maricopa County – although he called migration out of Maricopa quite small given the county’s overall size.

According to the data, most counties in Arizona had net migration gains from U.S. counties and in some cases from abroad from 2007 to 2011.

The biggest overall gainers in the state were Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, Mohave and Yavapai counties. Pinal had the largest net gain, with 17,034 more residents, followed by Pima with 9,457, according to the data. Maricopa County, which accounts for about 60 percent of Arizona’s population, was third with a net gain of 7,781 residents.

Within the state—Arizonans moving from one county to another—Maricopa was the biggest loser, seeing more than 10,000 residents move to other counties. Pinal, on the other hand, gained more than 7,000.

Some moves, such as Maricopa to Pinal, may simply have been people keeping their jobs but moving to a new county, Rex says. Others, such as a Maricopa-to-Yavapai move, may be retirees who want to get away from the metro area or escape the heat.

“What you have happening in Pima County, it’s probably a lot of collegeage students,” Rex says. Because the University of Arizona is large compared to Pima County’s population, the students who move there have a larger net effect than ASU would have on Maricopa County, he says.

The recession may have also affected Flagstaff, but in a different way, says Northern Arizona University’s Thomas Combrink.

“When times are tough, it’s more expensive to live up here, so people head south,” says Combrink, a senior research specialist at the Alliance Bank Business Outreach Center at the W.A. Franke College of Business.

He added that Flagstaff doesn’t benefit as much from retiree migration due to its altitude, which “some older folks don’t like.”

Geek Week, a 10 day exploration of science and sustainability, will run from February 14 through February 24.

“Geek Week takes place in Tempe schools, the Tempe History Museum and the Tempe Public Library, where they’ll have with them a display of science fiction movies and books and a showing of ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,’” Baxter-Ging says.

In honor of their American Pop! Exhibition, which highlights the fantastic elements of everything from graphic novels to gaming, Tempe Center for the Arts will host Sci-fi Fridays, where every Friday between now and the end of May, a scientist or someone in science fiction will lead a discussion.

“One of the more fun parts of the evening is the Phoenix ComicCon costume parade, so anyone who shows up in a costume—and believe me there are a lot of people who do—will be led on a walk by Phoenix ComicCon and members of the Tempe City Council from City Hall up to Mill Avenue and back around City Hall. That’s always a lot of fun because there will be hundreds of people in costume,” Baxter-Ging says.

College Times: Would you ever say that something like making fun of your last name is off boundaries?

Cummings: Oh, no. I make a joke about my last name a lot. When I first started doing stand-up, I always made a joke about it first … I’m really grateful for my last name, it played a big part in making me be funny. I had to sort of defend myself from a very young age. I would get made fun of, so I had to develop a very quick wit to retaliate.

Are you ever upset by the amount of people who are offended by the content of your show, “Two Broke Girls”?

No, not at all. I created it with Michael King, and our goal was to do something new and fresh and edgy. I think that you can spend your whole life worrying about what negative things people say, but so many people love it that the people that don’t are just irrelevant. It gets me really excited that people are thinking about it and talking about it. If they didn’t, I think that would be my biggest failure—to make a stand-up [or] a TV show that people weren’t offended by.

Are new boyfriends nervous about your stand-up routines?

I think that there are so many things to be nervous about when you are dating someone. It’s like, choose your poison. If you’re

dating me, you’re already a strong person anyway. Guys with any fears or self consciousness don’t even ask me out. I tend to attract narcissists who don’t mind. If a guy cared, I wouldn’t go out with him. I also don’t name names or anything. Also, know if you f*ck with me, I will ruin your life. I have a little leverage.

You went to school for communications and film. What were you thinking then? You must have known you were funny.

I was not funny. I was incredibly serious.

Most comedians are very serious people.

Most of what I am saying on stage, I don’t think is funny. It’s serious sh*t. Just because I am getting to the truth of something and people relate to it, that’s why they are laughing. I thought I was gonna change the world and be this muckraking journalist and get to the heart of all these truths. I wanted to be heard and make people think about things, uncover these injustices that I didn’t think anyone was paying attention to. Then I started studying journalism and realized that I was just so incredibly biased and that I could not be objective, so I realized “I cannot do this.” I was so incredibly judgmental and had such a strong point of view that I would be a terrible journalist. I’m too manipulative. I’m just a manipulative assh*le.

I’m just a liar, really, so I couldn’t write an objective anything.

There ain’t no party like a Tongue Tied party Ana Anguiano • College Times There aren’t too many places in Phoenix where skiers, fencers, swimmers in Speedos and ice skaters all get together to dance, drink and win gold medals. But Tongue Tied made it happen at Apollo’s Lounge when they threw their over-the-top Olympics themed dance party on February 1.

There were torches, flags, nasty drinking championships, a costume contest and a chance to plant your face on a box of cereal. Tongue Tied, a dance party that takes place the first Saturday of every month, is usually themed and always insane.

Tongue Tied started in April of last year when Michele Roya Chinichian, a.k.a DJ Roya, wanted to create a memorable music night in the Valley. She partnered up with Jay Wiggins, a.k.a DJ Funkfinger, and together with the help of friends and community members, they work tirelessly to create not only fun events, but unique experiences.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for a themed party and had a lot of ideas of things I had always wanted to do going in, so it was decided that we should just go for it. We don’t want to have a theme for the sake of having a theme, especially because it creates so much extra work for us since we want to execute these themes well, but if we have an idea that we feel would make for a more hilarious or memorable party, why not?,” says Chinichian. “We want to give people an unforgettable night.”

Some of the themed nights at Tongue Tied have included a Daft Punk party, an arcade themed Arcade Fire party, a Dance of the Dead and Tiki Kiki, among others.

The amount of effort and detail put into each Tongue Tied event is evident as soon as you enter Apollo’s and find yourself surrounded by decorations, props and crazy activities.

Chinichian says the Fugly Sweater Party and her Lisa Frank-inspired Magical Unicorn and Rainbow Birthday Party stand out as two instances where she wasn’t sure what the response would be. But it seems crazy ideas only inspire crazier homemade outfits. “[For the Lisa Frank party] we thought maybe 10 people at most would dress up and that the night had a good chance of feeling like a bust but it turned out incredible! There was a line to get in where almost everyone was dressed up in glitter, tutus, tiaras, hot pink wigs, unicorn horns, and covered in stickers. There were even clowns and a plushie monkey and penguin showed up! The energy was off-the-hook bonkers,” she says.

One of the best things about Tongue Tied is that it’s not just a dance night—it really is a full blown party. There are contests, games, amazing prizes and everyone gets along. The dance floor is a no judgment zone filled with people who just want to shake what they can and get down. No one has their arms crossed, especially not Dave Driscoll Dance

Machine, the DJ booth dancer that rocks a full body leotard and tasteful fanny pack as he jams next to DJ Roya and DJ Funkfinger.

“Our crowd is the silliest, least pretentious crowd I’ve ever had the pleasure to DJ for. We really enjoy them. The night doesn’t have a club atmosphere nor is overly hipster. It is really accessible, super diverse and a fun mix. A party is only as awesome as its party-goers and we think our crowd is pretty great,” Chinichian says.

Chinichian also lives a bit of a double life as a therapist and business owner during the day and a lively DJ at night.

Chinichian is a therapist with private practice as well as a part-time adjunct professor at a local community college. Wiggins is also a business owner, which Chinichian says helps them think in terms of branding when putting on an event.

“I can honestly say I’ve never worked harder at anything in my life, not even the development of my private practice which fuels my bills, which is so ridiculous when I really think about it,” she says. “It’s been a labor of love and starting over with a new night from scratch was straight-up hard work but the response has been amazing and I’m so grateful.”

Next month’s party is set to be Mardi Gras, themed with beads, masks, face painting, Bourbon Street drinks and more.

But the usual can still be expected. There will be a photo booth, a food truck, free popcorn and condoms, and plenty of music to get people grooving.

Career Guide Acing the Interview Certainly, the core of any interview consists of the questions you will be asked during the conversation. Employers are evaluating both the content of your responses as well your ability to confidently communicate your message.

While it may be a popular strategy, reviewing a long list of potential interview questions and then attempting to create (and then memorize) your best response is not the ideal way to prepare. Instead, as a candidate you are better off thinking about the types of questions that you may be asked and then determining the types of experiences and traits you want to communicate. Most interview questions can be divided into three categories: Traditional Questions - Any interview will certainly have a variety of traditional questions that focus on topics such as your career goals, your thoughts on topics like leadership and teamwork, and your work ethic. The key in answering these questions effectively is simply to respond directly and honestly.

In all likelihood, there is no “right” answer to these questions. Instead employers are more interested in your overall work style and ability to communicate.

Behavioral Questions - Through this popular interview format, interviewers want to learn about your potential future success through your past behavior. The key in answering a behavioral question is to accurately describe a situation from your past that displays a certain trait such as leadership, team work, or goalsetting. Behavioral questions should never be answered with your general thoughts or theory on a topic. Employers are looking for you to describe an actual and specific past experience using the STAR technique. This technique allows you to break your experiences down into specific components and is a great way

to prepare for behavioral questions. To answer questions using the STAR technique just keep in mind the following: S - Describe the initial Situation and any relevant background information.

T - Explain the Task that you set out to accomplish A - Detail the Action(s) you took to complete the task R - Highlight the positive Result(s) and major learning outcomes from the experience.

Technical Questions - Depending on the job, employers will want to know if you have the specific skills that are required to complete certain job tasks.

In these situations, you may be asked some technical questions. These questions are usually not designed to be easy and getting the “right” response, while preferable, may not be crucial. When responding to a technical question, employers are evaluating your logical in solving a problem. Therefore, walk the interviewer through your thought process in arriving at your response.

Lineup change doesn’t change the legend of The Pixies

Ana Anguiano • College Times The Pixies came on the scene over 25 years ago but their music still rings tingles through multiple generations of music fans. Last September, the band surprised their fans by self-releasing a four song EP, which they followed up with a second EP in January. However, the excitement behind EP-1 and EP-2 was dampened by the news that bassist Kim Deal had left the band while they were recording new material.

College Times got a chance to chat with Pixies drummer and magician on the side, David Lovering, about where the band is at and what to expect when they play Comerica Theatre with Best Coast.

College Times: How is the tour treating you so far?

Lovering: Very well! It’s going fantastic.

We’re out with Paz (Lenchantin), our (new) bass player, and we’re just having a blast. The shows are all sold out so I can’t complain.

How did you know Paz was the right fit for the band?

Originally back when we were looking for bass players, this was a year ago, Paz came in and auditioned. She’s always been in our minds and stuff like that. It’s great. She loves The Pixies and she works really well with us.

How is it playing with her on stage?

I think it’s fantastic. She’s so good, she’s a virtuoso, that she’s making me play better because I’m feeling intimidated. [Laughs] But I’m playing at the top that I can right now. She’s got the vocals and she is just exceptional on bass as well. It’s great. It’s like a precise, really powerful rhythm section now.

How has it been playing the new songs and incorporating them with your older work?

Scottsdale tattoo artists compete in the big leagues on ‘Ink Master’

It’s something new and refreshing. It’s good for us because during the set, it’s interesting because all the older songs are like riding a bike. It’s very easy to do and now we have the new songs that we’re putting in, and it’s been a couple months now where we get to work them out and feel them out and see how adept we play live. Like I said, the old ones are second nature but with the new ones you concentrate and it puts a little bit of adventure back in the set, trying to pull it off and play well. Every night we do 30 songs and we choose from 70, and that includes all old ones as well as new ones. So we get to mix it up and it’s fun.

Tell us a bit about the really incredible artwork that has been made for EP-1 and EP-2.

I wish we could take credit for all of that, but Vaughan Oliver does a lot of the artwork and that goes hand in hand with The Pixies.

And the videos, for every song that we had we hired a different director and gave them a flat fee and we told each one of them, ’Just do your interpretation of it.’ We had no say whatsoever. I’m very happy with it.

The visuals are really great and I love the

potpourri of all the different videos and different ideas people came up with.

I heard your stage set up is really neat for this tour.

We have a lighting director, Myles Mangino, and he always comes up with something very, very interesting. This year it’s really cool. I’ll just say it involves a lot of recycled large screen TVs and ornaments from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. [Laughs] That’s what it’s made from, believe it or not.

It packs small and plays big, which is all the things I like, so you’ve got it see it. It’s crazy.

Have you thought about what will happen after the tour? Or are you taking things one step at a time?

We’re on the road through spring of 2015 so were just going to concentrate on that and we haven’t even spoken about touring after that.

Two self-taught Scottsdale tattoo artists are among those going needle to needle in the new season of Spike TV’s “Ink Master,” which kicks off on Tuesday, February 25.

Club Tattoo’s Randy Vollink, who is gay, is hoping to show that artists aren’t just Good Ole Boys, while Bubba Irwin is striving to drive more business to his shop, Old Town Ink. “Everything about this industry is an old-boys club,” Vollink says. “It’s getting a little better. That’s one of the things I was hoping to accomplish being on this show.”

On “Ink Master,” 17 top tattoo artists from across the country compete in extreme challenges proving their skill and grit in an epic battle for $100,000.

Vollink, who like Irwin, attended a casting call in Las Vegas, says the competition was the most stressful tattooing he had ever done. Considering contestants are watched under the eagle eyes of musician Dave Navarro, Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck, there’s bound to be a lot of pressure.

Vollink, who specializes in photorealistic tattoos, found Navarro intimidating, while Irwin called him “genuine.”

“He came across as very nice, but he can definitely stare you down,” Vollink says with a laugh.

Irwin explains the key to success is staying patient.

“I’m also glad I didn’t change my character,” he says.

Irwin learned his strong work ethic and morals from his father, who he idolizes.

“My dad was a pretty tough guy growing up and he taught us how to work,” he says. “When we were kids, we didn’t really like it growing up because we were trying to play all the time but he would make us work first and then we’d get to play. We always kind of resented him for that and now it paid off in the end.”

The show, filmed in New York, is taped, except for the season finale. Vollink and Irwin wouldn’t spill their outcomes.

“It’s all in the name of secrecy,” Irwin says.

Dr. Dog ain’t afraid of no ghost Ana Anguiano • College Times Dr. Dog has been around the block, but when it came to recording their seventh studio album, they wanted to shake things up. The band built a new studio from scratch where they recorded B-Room, which was released last fall. Guitarist and singer Scott McMicken recently chatted with College Times about his experiences with Arizona, their new studio and ghosts.

You can catch Dr. Dog playing two nights at Crescent Ballroom with Saint Rich on February 24 and 25.

College Times: What was it you wanted from the new studio?

McMicken: We just wanted something bigger originally, but then we wanted something that would accommodate the live-in folks better. We had some bedrooms and a kitchen and a shower and stuff. We wanted somewhere that was more remote and peaceful and quiet. This spot fulfilled all of those desires. It’s this old, old mill.

Part of it was built in this 1700s and it has an inherently cool vibe to the place.

Is it haunted at all?

No, I was actually surprised. I was living there right out of the gate, even when it was a construction zone. I just pitched a tent in the corner. I was the only one staying there and definitely on that first night I was prepared. It’s a really creaky old room at night. The room is really noisy but no weird supernatural occurrences.

Our old spot definitely did have some “X-Files” activity pretty often.

Did you see something?

No, just the presence of it. I remember one night I was sleeping on the couch and I heard the door open and I heard footsteps on the wood floors, and I heard that sound walk right up to the edge of the couch where I was laying and stopped. That was the end of it. My friend Beaver had that same exact experience and my friend Edan had that same exact experience while sleeping there at night.

You filmed your new music video for “Distant Light” in Arizona. Tell us about your connection to Arizona.

One of our band members, Dimitri (Manos), lives in Tucson, and has lived in Tucson for probably 15 years or so. He joined the band maybe three years ago but we’ve known him for that long a time.

We’ve all been out to Tucson a bunch on account of visiting him. We’ve gone out there to record. Our other buddy, Nathan Sabatino, who engineers albums with us and is also in another band with Dimitri (Golden Boots), also lives in Tucson. That’s kind of our Arizona connection.

I like Tucson a lot. I took a tour once of Arizona and spent like two weeks going to all the various corners of the state. It’s such a diverse and bizarre world out there.

It’s a very unique state and I feel it has a lot of unique people and it fosters some very interesting and unique ways of life in a creative sense. I’ve always felt very good out there.

At the Disco lead singer Brendon Urie has become just as well known for his back flips as he has for his music. On a recent visit to “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” he stunned with his gymnastic move while singing “Miss Jackson.”

Urie laughs when a reporter points out his smooth move.

“I taught myself how to back flip when I was like 8 or 9,” says Urie, who grew up in the Las Vegas area. “We used to have a trampoline when I was a kid. I thought it was the best thing in the world.

“I would jump off our second-story roof and just like try all kinds of flips. I was this fearless little kid. I just always loved doing it. I’m very hyper. I’m just very hyperactive.

I have a lot of nervous energy to expel.

That helps with the show. People seem to like it. I like to entertain and it definitely helps.”

Urie: My favorite Valentine’s Day was when me and my wife started dating. That used to be our anniversary. We met kind of like two weeks before that. We said, “Well, it would just be easier to call Valentine’s Day our anniversary. That way, we both can’t forget it. There’s no excuse.”

On your new album “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!,” you were inspired by your hometown of Vegas, is that right?

Yes. As a kid, it was pretty normal, somewhat. There is always the glimpse of the strip from your backyard. You can always see it five miles away. I grew up in the middle class suburbs. It’s pretty normal. You hang out with your friends, go to school, play sports on the weekends.

As I got older, I realized a deeper appreciation I had for the town I grew up in. As a kid, I always had this fantasy when I was watching this movie like “Casino” and I loved Sinatra, the Rat Pack, I loved that era of Vegas. I wanted to bring it back for this record. I wanted to just kind of make a fantastical version of my take on that era. I love the debauchery. I love the seediness. I love the glamour. There’s something about it. Every song was based on something I went through growing up there.

This is a very personal album. What is

a difficult process?

Yeah, some of the stuff, I wasn’t sure how to word it. I try to keep a lot of the messages simple. A couple of the songs were fairly easy to get out. But showing them to people initially, I was a little nervous. I was apprehensive to show some people. I wrote a song called “This is Gospel” about Spencer, our drummer’s addiction, and how it affected me, how it’s affected him, how I felt, how I pictured him feeling. It was very, very personal. I didn’t know how to show him. So I just did one day. I just emailed it to him. I didn’t say anything. I just waited for a response.

I didn’t say, “You know this is about you, right?” He seemed to enjoy the song. We never fully got into a discussion about it.

It never got weird. There’s this underlying tone. Some of that stuff is pretty difficult.

To be honest can seem like some of the hardest things to do. It gets easier and easier the more you do it. I love that.

It’s just so much less stress when you’re honest. You leave everything on the table.

When you’re that confessional you just reap rewards.

College Times: Congratulations on being the newest cast member of “Total Divas.”

How did you get used to the cameras being around you?

Rae: We’re used to it a lot from TV, anyway.

I’m also down here at NXT in Orlando, our developmental system. We have our TV tapings every two, three weeks for NXT, as well. It was a little different being a reality show. I didn’t want to seem like I sounded fake ‘cause I knew the camera was on me. It took a while, then I just got used to it. Now those camera guys are pretty close to me. They’re my family now.

It’s been fun to watch you come up through the ranks. It’s been so fast.

I’ve been very fortunate. Being paired with Fandango is probably the best thing that could have happened to me because he’s so popular. He was amazing. When he first came on, fresh from his Wrestlemania victory over Chris Jericho, it was great to just feel the crowd Fandango-ing and the crowd cheering for him.

Fandango’s appearances on “Total Divas” have been nice segues to having you on the show.

Yeah. He was on a lot doing a lot of scandalous things that I had to reprimand him for. [Laughs] I think that’s also something that’s interesting with season two of “Total Divas.”

Fandango and I’s relationship has been on the surface level, as far as WWE programming with “Monday Night Raw,” “Main Event,” “Friday Night SmackDown.” You see us on camera and that’s about it. As far as backstage, not a lot of people know about our relationship. It’s great that people are going to see behind the scenes with Fandango and I. WWE Live, US Airways Center, 201 E. My Future Boyfriend Everybody has a favorite romantic comedy. No matter how much we deny it, we all know that there is that one corny movie we’ll drop our plans and happily veg on the couch for as soon the title pops up on our television guide.

These flicks give us a break from the angst-ridden indie movies that seem to have taken over the romantic landscape in film the past few years.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I decided to put myself through what was sure to be the chore of watching a crappy romance flick. After browsing through the titles and descriptions on my Netflix guide, I came upon a film that seemed tailor made for me: “My Future Boyfriend.”

I am more than forthcoming in my appreciation for time travel plot devices, and if the title didn’t convince me, then it was the synopsis that sealed the deal.

An anthropologist from the future travels back in time to learn about love.

I was hooked.

The film stars Barry Watson, of 7th Heaven fame, as the titular futuristic boyfriend. In a future where everyone dresses in ‘80s-inspired jumpsuits and talks like C3PO from “Star Wars,” Pax (Watson) finds a generic romance novel in a sunken ship. He becomes increasingly fascinated with the book and the concept of love, passion and sex since they, like fashion sense, have ceased to exist in the 32nd century.

Pax travels back in time to meet the book’s author, Elizabeth Barrett (played

by Sara Rue). Sara is a sassy writer with a respectable boyfriend and a good head on her shoulders. In rom-com land this means her boyfriend is boring and she will be losing her mind halfway through the flick.

The movie goes through a list of romantic comedy must-haves: a montage of our protagonists getting to know each other, a drunken confession of love and the lovers being temporarily separated, just to name a few. The movie works best when it’s focusing on its strong point (the love story) as opposed to when it adds

the necessary sci-fi elements that come with it also being a time traveling flick.

The special effects are just laughable (the teleporter looks like a paper-mache replica of a Power Rangers watch).

While the movie does require the audience to completely suspend disbelief for most of its hour-long run, the cast definitely elevates the material. Rue is instantly likeable in her role, even when she does a completely 180 and behaves like a completely different character (I think these movies are trying to tell us love makes you dumber). Watson does his best Rain Man impersonation throughout, and I cannot decide if that is a compliment or not.

Somewhere in the film is a subplot about the Department of Treasury trying to find Pax, because he’s using money from the future, which ends up being pointless if you make it to the last ten minutes of the movie.

Netflix users have rated the film 3 starts out of 5. It stars Sara Rue, Barry Watson and a bunch of other TV people you’ll recognize but won’t be able to name.

Man’s will and emotions can not be subdued, the media tells us what to believe, corporation rules the world, the US Senate is anti-robot and America is the greatest country on Earth. Somehow, these “facts” were not-so-convincing in “RoboCop,” a sci-fi, action, crime thriller starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, a critically injured copturned-robot.

When Murphy is injured in a car explosion, his wife is told that her beloved husband will be paralyzed from the waist down, blind in one eye, and possibly deaf, among other injuries. Tragic, but not impossible to overcome. Doctors tell her otherwise and force her to make an immediate decision.

So, like any good grieving wife, she agrees to have him made into a robot. The goodwife that she may be is also somewhat naive and unconcerned that Alex will be in China for his procedures.

In this world, people can be made into 90 percent robot, but there isn’t the technology to help deaf people or those who go blind by injury? The script just doesn’t do enough to make the viewer believe what’s happening.

There are some serious plot holes that need to be addressed here, but if you can head into the film ready for action rather than story, this might be the film for you.

If these elements add up just fine for you, then maybe you will only be bothered by the strange noises that the robot parts make. The noises sound like the typical robot sounds you would find on a cheap film editing software tab called “robot noises.”

You can save a man and make him into a robot that fights crime, but you can’t grease his joints. (I mean, without the noises, how else are you going to know he’s a robot?)

As a remake, “RoboCop” appeals to the same audience that loved it when it first came out in 1987, which is good if you happen to be a part of that audience. For everyone else, however, it was two hours of loud guns, copious and unnoticed deaths and plot holes that leave you in disbelief rather than robo-wonder.

His work in “I am Number Four” and “Magic Mike” had women across the nation swooning, and a quick look at the trailer for his newest movie about two starcrossed teen lovers, “Endless Love,” has female hearts skipping a beat. The film opens in theatres on February 14, just in time for Valentine’s Day. College Times: You play a bad boy in “Endless Love.” Can you tell me how close that is to your actual personality?

Pettyfer: I’m a goody goody. I’m very boring. Everyone makes up that I’m a bad boy but I’m really not. Maybe it’s the characters I play that kind of attract me, because I want to be a bad boy but no, I’m not.

What was your first love like, and was it just as epic as David’s?

I don’t think it was as epic but it was good.

Everyone’s first love I feel always determines how the rest of your life is going to turn out, I really do. Whether you break up

and enter into new relationships and you hold onto things that your first love has either gone wrong or gone right…yeah, I think your first love is one of the most important things in your life.

He’s really the light in our movie. He’s very funny, very charismatic. Oh, my dad! He plays the cop in “Terminator 2” and he’s also my dad in the movie. His name is Robert Patrick.

What was it like acting with Gabriella Wilde?

It was good. She was English, so it was like she was able to have a little bit of fun with me. Yeah, she’s a lovely woman.

How does this role compare to others you’ve had?

I think it was harder than most I’ve ever done because I’m not that guy, in the sense that I’m more closed off and David is more external, but the same kind of personality inside as him. I’m a hopeless romantic. I just love love. I think every guy loves love.

How much of the onscreen chemistry is real?

It’s so hit and miss with actors. You can either get along really well or not at all.

And sometimes, when you don’t get on at all, you can have chemistry onscreen because there’s that tension, but she was so easy to get along with and so nice. We did this rehearsal period beforehand where we built trust and built a connection and just went from there.

Tell me about the rest of the cast.

I did the movie with Bruce Greenwood. I’m a massive fan boy. I love “Star Trek.” He plays Captain Pike in “Star Trek” and he’s amazing actor. His work ethic is fantastic.

He just wants to improve the movie. It was an amazing cast… Dayo Okeniyi, my best friend in the movie, he was amazing.

I can hear people falling in love with you as they’re reading this.

No, I do [think that.] I think any guy that turns around and says they don’t love love is hiding that. I think men are just as sensitive as women. I think that people are cynical from their relationships. As I said, your first love is definitely the most important because you can either walk away from that and be cynical and hold a grudge or you can go and understand the experience that you’ve had, if you’ve been cheated on or whether it hasn’t turned out from different complications and understand that that was meant to be and there’s definitely someone out there that’s meant for you.

A golden hue surrounds the beautiful Jade Butterfield (Gabriella Wilde,) and David Axelrod (Alex Pettyfer,) as Jade gives her lover glimpses of frilly panties and tan shoulders. David has been waiting for this moment.

Jade is scarred by her brother’s death and spends most of high school alone with a book, working toward a medical career, just like her father. David is a troublemaker with a good heart who has been waiting for the perfect chance to speak to Jade.

“Endless Love” is a remake of a 1981 version of the story that focuses on two lovers who are very different from their modern counterparts.

The Jade and David set to premiere this Valentine’s Day are both recent high school graduates in a more wholesome relationship.

That is, David doesn’t start a fire on Jade’s porch and try to put it out in an effort to impress her family, but then fail and burn down the Butterfield’s house, like he did in the original.

The couple is consumed by their relationship.

Jade and David’s love develops over the span of a week, which even in real life is a push.

Jade even considers giving up her esteemed internship to be with him for the summer.

Jade is also overdone. She prances and flings her arms in the air. She just spent four years alone, since when did she become so open and expressive?

“Say Goodbye to Innocence” is the flick’s tagline, which carries an ominous tone, but the movie showed little sign of any innocence dying, unless the tagline refers to Jade’s father, Hugh Butterfield (Bruce Greenwood) being forced to accept his daughter’s relationship and his son’s death. He wasn’t all that innocent to begin with.

Fete did create a very dramatic love story, but it was a remake of an unbelievable story, so props to her for making this new “Endless Love” an interesting watch. There are scenes that have a very magical feeling to them, like Jade strip teasing for David, but overall the movie is a typical dramatized love story.

Endless Love earned a B-, but just barely.

This is kind of like when you get a 79.8 percent in a class that rounds up to a B- because your professor decides to be nice. It was superficially enjoyable and might be fun for all you ladies on Valentine’s, but the overzealous acting and rather unbelievable plot line makes this flick a one-time viewing.
