Catlin Court shop celebrates 35 years BY SCOTT SHUMAKER Glendale Star Staff Writer
Since Carolyn Gimplowitz took over The Tole Shop in the Catlin Court Historic Retail District near Downtown Glendale, she’s seen recessions and bull markets, competition from online shops and big box stores and, most recently, a pandemic. But through it all, one thing has stayed constant: People have congregated at Gimplowitz’s bungalow on Palmaire Avenue to practice the folk art of tole painting. Tole painting is the decoration of household objects like coffee pots and chairs with painted images and effects like shading and highlighting. With a few strokes of the brush, crafters can elevate ordinary items into works of art. Gimplowitz first learned about tole painting at a craft show. She was impressed that someone without an art back-
ground could do it. “I thought you had to be an artist,” she said. “(But) it’s called ‘folk art’ for a reason — a lot of folks can do it.” Tole painting had its height in popularity in Europe and New England in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Glendale Water Services Department will leave 350 acre-feet, or about 1.5%, of the city’s 22,582 allotted acrefeet of Colorado River water in Lake Mead this year. The city is part of a coalition of river users forgoing water in an effort to keep the reservoir from dropping below a critical mark. At Glendale city council’s Jan. 25 workshop, Water Resources Manager Drew
Swieczkowski told the council that the reduction is part of a December agreement by the Colorado River Water Users Association to keep an extra 500,000 acre-feet of water in the reservoir this year. The goal of the so-called 500+ Plan is to keep the water level of the lake from dropping below 1,020 feet, a critical threshold for the health of the reservoir. “We don’t think there’s a strong possibility that Lake Mead could come back from that (level),” Swieczkowski said. “Because of the geometry of the lake and
some other things, 1,020 (feet) is a pretty tough thing to come back from, so we’re really trying to prevent that.” In November, models projected the lake would drop to 1,030 feet within the next 24 months. The forecast triggered a mandatory meeting of the Colorado River users group to consider whether additional measures were needed to boost the lake level in the face of extended drought. Swieczkowski said that water users in California agreed to leave 215,00 acre-
