ARIZONA’S COLLEGES

WITH THE SCHOOL YEAR KICKING OFF, WE THOUGHT WE SHOULD SHARE SOME FACTS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT ARIZONA’S COLLEGES.

11

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX IS THE LARGEST ONLINE SCHOOL IN THE U.S. Based in the Valley, this university has 263,000 students, the largest online school in the nation.

10

PHOENIX COLLEGE ATHLETICS ARE QUITE THE SMARTIES Since the 2000-2001 school year, 86 of the Phoenix College athletic teams have been named NJCAA- All Academic Teams.

9

NO ONE KNOWS WHERE GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S MASCOT CAME FROM The Glendale Gaucho is the mascot of GCC and, although the South American cowboy does embody the attitude of the old southwest, the origin of this symbol is lost in the college’s early history.

MAROON AND GOLD HAVE BEEN ASU’S COLORS FOR A LONG TIME ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

6

For more than century, in fact! The colors were established in 1896.

7

SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S MASCOT WAS A PRANK The student body of the community college in 1971 was angered by the amount of money that was dedicated to athletics, so they expressed their dissatisfaction by voting for the artichoke to be the mascot and pink and white to be their school colors. The athletic department put their foot down about the colors, but the mascot stuck and is now part of the school’s charm.

ASU HAS SEEN SOME MAJOR NAME CHANGES

6

You would think that Arizona State University would be a pretty obvious name, but when the school was founded in 1885 it was named Territorial Normal School of Tempe. A few other name changes occurred, including Normal School of Arizona and Tempe State Teachers College, before finally becoming Arizona State University in 1958.

ASU HAS A LOT OF CLASSROOMS There are about 500 classrooms spread across the four campuses.

MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE HAS A VERY LOW AVERAGE CLASS SIZE

U OF A HAS A FEW FAMOUS ALUMNI

With the average class size being 22 students, MCC is a great fit for those who think they might want a more personal experience and plenty of one-on-one time with professors.

Celebrity graduates of U of A include: Kourtney Kardashian, Greg Kinnear, Craig T. Nelson, Linda McCartney, Kate Walsh, Kristen Wiig and Rob Gronkowski.

Northern Arizona University first opened in 1899 with one professor, two copies of Webster’s International Dictionary bound in sheepskin and 23 students. It’s said that the first president of the school rode horse and buggy through the countryside to fill the single school building, what is now known as Old Main, with students.

hen it comes to shoes, money doesn’t buy class. Gucci fell head-first into a hairy controversy with their “princetown” goat fur slip-on loafers, which cost $1,800 and look like Chewbacca got down with your mom’s house slippers. When you walk into Wholesale Fashion Shoes in Phoenix, it’s a broke girl’s playground. Most shoes are priced at $10.88 and boots at $16.88, so you can go nuts! We don’t mean to say there aren’t any cute shoes in store, but they’re known for some, let’s say... eccentric pieces. Here are the tackiest we could find, from the repulsive to the truly WTF.

6. THE KNOCKOFF BLUE UGG WEDGE

5. ‘70SINSPIRED LOAFER FLATS

4. BLUE PRINCESS HEEL

3. RED MESH HOUNDTOOTH HEEL

2. GREEKINSPIRED LEOPARD PRINT HEEL

1. ORANGE SNAKESKIN PLATFORM HEEL

For those occasions when you want to look like you’re just taking out the trash but also want to be uncomfortable, these boots are there to make you look like a cheap Muppet hooker.

If Gwen Stefani and Cruella de Vil designed a shoe together and simultaneously decided they didn’t have any businesses in being cobblers, this would be the shoe they leave in the garbage.

Jan Brady would think these are totally cute, but nobody wanted to be Jan anyway.

Considering buying these? Princess Peach would be proud, but you probably shouldn’t live your life trying to please fictional video game characters.

Leopards with wings would easily be the most terrifying creature in history, and still these shoes are somehow a bigger abomination.

Made of rotten orange rinds and the smell of desperation, these platform heels are complete with lace-up detail for when your innocent foot tries to escape.

I want to help people. ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

student life

L L E H Every fall, thousands of unsuspecting college students across the country move in with roommates hoping for the best. Sometimes the stories end with “happily ever after” but other times—not so much. One cannot predict where The Roommate From Hell will strike or how often, but one thing is for sure, The Roommate will ruin your life. College Times asked four previous victims for tales from their experiences with The Roommate as warnings for the rest of you. We also included definitely real, totally authentic and 100 percent legit police sketches of The Roommate as described by the victims. These are their stories…

town for the weekend. I wasn’t planning on making the pit stop when I left for work that morning, and apparently my roommates knew that, but I had realized that I had forgotten something and as I ran up the stairs to our second-story apartment, I saw that the door was open. “Hello?” I said as I entered. Both of their cars were there, but it was unlike them to leave the door open. “You weren’t supposed to come home!” I heard from right above my head—from my room. “What are you doing in my—” I began as I ascended my stairs.

I stopped in my tracks when I saw what they had done. My bed was moved across the room. My clothes and shoes were everywhere. My nightstands’ drawers were open and The Roommate was rifling through them apparently “organizing” them. The gallery wall I had worked so hard on was now scattered across the floor. They had gone through, touched and moved every single thing that I owned. Despite my warnings not to, they were redoing my room. The kicker? It was my “birthday present.”

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

YEAR: 2013 LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA THE ROOMMATE: Pretty female in her early 20s, twangy Southern accent ACCOUNT: “The Roommate, look at me. No—no—The Roommate, look me in the eyes. Do NOT redo my room. You do not have my permission to do so and I do not want you in my room when I am not here. I like my room the way it is and do not want you or anyone else to redo it.”

I could feel myself getting shrill as I said this, but I couldn’t help it. She was still looking around and I could see the wheels turning already. “The Roommate—I’m serious. DO NOT redo my room.” “Okay, okay, fine,” she said with a smirk on her face. The fact that I even had to say those words is absurd, but what is truly ludicrous is that she did anyway—and got my other roommate, and best friend, to help. About two weeks after that conversation, I stopped by my apartment on my way out of

Victim 2 YEAR: 2014

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

12

LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ THE ROOMMATE: Male, early 20s, plays music too loud ACCOUNT: It had been almost a year since I moved in with some “friends” from high school. I thought it would be easy living with boys, but by the time his birthday party, which he planned to host at the house, rolled around we had been fighting for months about everything, so I figured it’d be easier if I wasn’t there. Plus, I wasn’t in the mood to babysit drunk party guests all night. “I’m not going to the party, The Roommate. I’m going somewhere for the night.” “You’re really leaving your own house? What am I going to

say when people ask why all of my roommates aren’t here for MY birthday?” Apparently he wanted to keep up appearances but we hadn’t talked to each other in weeks and I didn’t want to be held responsible for anything that went wrong at the party. I came home the next day to the house TRASHED. Red solo cups lined the entire house and my shoes stuck to the floor from all the spilled drinks. I caught him just as he was about to head to brunch with his friends. “Ummm… you’re not going to help us clean up before you leave?” I asked. “I’ll do it later, it’s not that bad,” he said. Inexplicably, there was paint all over the bathroom sinks and I couldn’t even sit on the couch without smelling the remnants

of smoke and stale beer. Yeah, not that bad. “Oh yeah, someone broke the back door off. We have to buy a new one,” he said, so nonchalantly. “WAIT. WE?! I wasn’t even here and you want me to help buy a new door?” This was the reason I didn’t go to the party. Now, not only did I have to clean up his sticky mess, but he wanted to hold me equally accountable for something his friends did. Indignant, my other roommates and I retaliated by leaving the door propped up for weeks until he gave in and went door shopping with his parents… and then make sure to tell us how expensive the door was. That was the last party we had before I moved out two months later.

YEAR: 2013 LOCATION: Tempe, AZ THE ROOMMATE: A 2-yearold multicolored cat who is probably at least part liquid ACCOUNT: I didn’t dislike cats. In fact, I once considered myself a cat person, even when cats past have ruined my curtains, caused permanent scratch scars and, inexplicably, made angry bird noises toward me. You might say I was crazy to continue believing there is any good in decidedly cold little cat hearts. “Moooooooooow!” The Roommate said idiotically the very second I opened my door in the morning, every morning. Doesn’t this thing know the phrase is “Meow?” “Mooooooooooow!” The Roommate said again, this time more insistent. I reached down to pet The Roommate when it scurried away in a panic. I went to make coffee. The Roommate watched me, licking her filthy, litterencrusted paws. The keepers of The Roommate worked constantly and didn’t get to see this side of The Roommate. “Mooooooooooow!”

Victim 4 YEAR: 2006 LOCATION: Tempe, AZ THE ROOMMATE: Rich white dude in his 20s out for a thrill ACCOUNT: It was safe to say I wasn’t feeling well. I was busting my ass at work when I just couldn’t take it anymore. My fever was rising and I had to go home. I lay down in bed, trying to shut out the raucous noises of my three other roommates, who were known to mess with me in my sleep. When I heard a violent knock at the door, I just assumed it was one of the live-in idiots trying to get a rise out of me. Drenched in my own sweat, I ignored the knock and tried to fall back to sleep— back to what I presumed

was my fever dream. When I woke up, there was a lady cop pointing a gun in my face with a badge that said DEA. Was this real life? She dragged me out to the street in my underwear, handcuffed hands behind me, when I spotted him. The Roommate, who was apparently dealing drugs, stood perfectly clothed and perfectly happy with his perfectly stupid little dog sitting by his side. Worst of all, he wasn’t even in handcuffs. The DEA searched the house and found nothing but some innocent “tobacco-only” bongs and an unmarked pill bottle. “What are these?” lady cop questioned as she shook the pill bottle in his face. “Oh, those are penis enlargement pills,” he smiled coyly. “They don’t work.”

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

Defeated, I went to my room, closed the door and attempted to work. Bonk, said the door, loose in its frame. Bonk, bonk, bonk. “Mooooooooooow!” Bonk, bonk, bonk. Then silence. Sweet silence... “Moooooooooooooow!” This was just the start of the abusive relationship between The Roommate and me. This repeated all day, every day, for six months, until one day when I decided to get some rest after a late night. I laid down in something quite wet with a very distinct smell. I’m something of a tattletale, so without hesitation, I told The Roommate’s keepers that their precious little kitty made a precious little piss all over my bed. They apologized profusely and started keeping The Roommate behind closed doors during working hours. Success! Take that, ya little idiot! Secure in my newfound independence, I felt confident enough to leave the house to go grocery shopping. Making sure The Roommate was still locked away, I took my time. However, when I got home, I noticed something. My bed was quite wet, with a little addition... Well, big for a cat. A nice, healthy reverse Fancy Feast lay on my bed. But The Roommate was still behind closed doors... I called the keepers. No, they hadn’t been home, they swore. I checked the vents. Did The Roommate somehow develop thumbs and unscrew them? It doesn’t really matter. What’s done is done. Only the sweet scent of cat piss remains. Oh, and a massive resentment toward cats.

Have you witnessed gender discrimination?

Have you witnessed gender discrimination?

No. There are actually a lot guys in my class, but people are always nice in my class. [Guys are common] in this major and they are always helping me if I have any questions. They are always helpful.

No. In my field, I would see more male students than female students, but female students do work just as hard as male students. They are as intelligent, or even more intelligent, than male students. I can say this from personal experience.

Do you think your experiences in school are different because of your gender?

No. I would have different perspectives with my male classmates, but I would always discuss our different opinions, but there [are] no conflicts based on the gender perspective difference.

Do you think your experiences in school are different because of your gender?

As far as gender goes, to some professors, yes. They seem to be more biased towards female students than male students. One biology class, I do remember when it [came] to the office hours for the professor… More girls would [get responses], but guys would email him and didn’t get responses from him often compared to girls. We never looked into it, but that’s one of the times I felt the difference.

ately there’s been a lot of talk in the media about how freaking “vain” I’ve been because I thought Nicki Minaj’s tweets whining about not being nominated for Video of the Year at the Video Music Awards were actually about me. Listen people, I’m not vain. But honestly, read this tweet and tell me it’s not about me: “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.” As a very slim woman, I’m clearly included in that category. that are almost definitely taking a stab at me that I didn’t get upset about. Nicki’s was just one of many. Take, for instance, this tweet from Donald Trump: “Do you notice that Hillary spews out Jeb’s name as often as possible in order to give him status? She knows Trump is her worst nightmare.” Why is Donald Trump tweeting about me, and why is he calling me Hillary!?

Donald Trump, I’ve been nothing but supportive of you. It’s not like you to pit me against Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush! Besides, everyone knows Trump isn’t my worst nightmare—my worst nightmare is drama! I HATE DRAMA!!! I mean, seriously. At least my fans have my back with this #JusticeForCecil hashtag. But they should know that my middle name is Alison, not Cecil. Also, I haven’t been shot dead. So maybe the facts are fuzzy, but at least the sentiment is there. #NoMoreDrama, <3 Tay Tay

If you’re anything like us, you have the taste of someone in their 40s or 50s, but the salary (or lack there of) of someone in their 20s. Luckily for our poor souls, most of the restaurants out of our price range offer pretty amazing happy hour prices. So, taking advantage of that, we’re proving you can still have a fun, delicious date for under $30.

BESOTTED WITH BLASTED BARLEY BEER CO.

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

20

A fairly new addition to Downtown Tempe, Blasted Barley Beer Co. is one part pub, one part nightclub, two parts afternoon hangout out and two parts brewery. The patio that wraps around the place looked so fun and relaxing, but since this dating duo decided to go at 4 p.m. in the depths of summer, we were panting after our (very) short walk from the car and decided to take advantage of the A/C.

AMBIANCE As you walk in a mural says, “You look ridiculously good today,” offering a cue card for stumbling, smitten dates. With brick walls, a big bar and the “wood-meets-steel” look everywhere, this place is cool. The outside looks wonderful; patio games including ping pong, corn hole and giant Jenga

occupy the turf outside along with classic arcade games. My boyfriend and I have been together for over two years, so we zoned out for a bit watching ESPN’s top 10 plays of the day, but I imagine that a courting couple would find refuge in the opportunity to play a game and fill the inevitable silence.

DRINKS As we went to sit at our booth, giant, stainless steel vats caught our eyes. As our noses picked up the scent of yeast, we realized we were in the brewery. Intrigued, and loving the $3 home brew happy hour price, my hop-loving boyfriend picked the Bang! Bang! Double Black IPA and I asked for the Das Blitz Kolsch. As we sipped our respective brews and then tried each other’s, we were pleasantly surprised by how tasty, complex and impressive both were. The ‘ole “Wanna try a sip?” is a classic way of telling

whether or not someone might be up for the other kind of spit-swappin’ later.

FOOD It’s going to be hard to beat this deal—during happy hour, almost all of Blasted Barley’s apps are half off. We were tempted by their “popcorn of sustainability” but ultimately chose their wings and nachos with chicken. While they were both definitely messy finger food, they were totally worth it. Plus, I got to live a out a bit of a fantasy... well, kind of. As we were getting ready to leave, my boyfriend reached over and said, “You have a…” as his hand touched my face, I was sure it was going to be an eyelash that he would then blow away, wishing for a happily ever after. Alas, he finished his sentence with “a bit of sauce right here.”

TOTAL $24.87 for two craft beers and two appetizers.

ONE ASU ALUM TOOK THE LEAP OF INVESTING EARLY ON JASMINE KEMPER • COLLEGE TIMES

A

s college students, the idea of saving money sounds silly, considering most of us barely have enough to stay afloat. However, one ASU alumnus says that if you want to be financially stable postgraduation, you need to start investing as soon as possible. STUDENT INVESTOR

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

Juan Martinez majored in supply chain management and accountancy at ASU, and for the past year has held the position of area manager at Amazon Fulfillment. He says he was first exposed to the idea of investing by his mother, who spoke about her 401K when he was younger, but it wasn’t until his sophomore year of college that he began to fully understand the concept. “My first accounting courses covered material like unrealized gains being taxed and all that. It was an interesting concept of saving and earning money over the long run without necessarily adding too much effort, so I started to look into it,” Martinez says. After that, Martinez worked on saving as much money as he could during college. He opened a small savings account and then a 401K account during his internship. For those who are unfamiliar, a 401K is a retirement account that can be offered by your employer. These types of

accounts are meant for longterm benefits, Martinez says. “You put a certain percentage of your income [from] each paycheck and it accrues interest over time. The best part about it is that usually your employer matches a certain percentage of how much money you put in, so they essentially pay you to save your money,” Martinez says.

LOCKING UP STOCKS While entering the stock market can be rewarding, Martinez says you have to realize that there are ups and downs in investing. He currently owns Amazon stock that was offered to him as a bonus when he was hired. However, in the first two months it lost $2,300 in value. “Over the past year since then, it’s increased $35,000 in value since Amazon stock price blew up. My point is that it’s a calculated risk you take depending on what you’re investing in,” he says. He recommends contacting services like JP Morgan,

THERE IS ALWAYS RISK; IT’S UP TO YOU TO ACCEPT HOW MUCH YOU’RE WILLING TO TAKE ON. Goldman Sachs, or any other investment firms if you are interested in stocks. “Typically they ask you for a base fee or minimum amount in your account that you can open with, so it’s good to save up before you think about jumping in,” Martinez says. “Stocks are a little more volatile and risky while longterm-goal portfolios like 401Ks are much more steady and secure. There is always risk; it’s up to you to accept how much you’re willing to take on.”

Martinez recommends that college students who are interested in investing start right away in order to reap the most benefits. “Start off saving money into a savings account with your bank, usually around three months of your current rent. After that, open a 401K with your employer and put anywhere from 10 to 25 percent of your income into it each week. You can go [as] aggressive as you’d like. If you want to invest in stocks, talk to some professionals and get some insight and knowledge before you go buying anything,” he

advises. All of this may sound confusing, but Martinez assures us that with the right professional guidance, the investment process is rewarding and fun! Ultimately, how well you regulate your money determines your success. “It isn’t difficult. Just maintain discipline and make sure that the money you put away doesn’t get [used] unless it’s an absolute emergency,” Martinez says. “First off, it’ll give you a solid financial footing later in life. Secondly, it’s always good to have something to fall back on if things don’t turn [out] well. Lastly, you don’t realize how much those extra snacks and all that Amazon shopping you’re doing adds up until it’s too late. If you were to invest half that money, it would give you so much more than just a short term fix,” Martinez says.

hoever speaks with Mike Crowley is prey to his fiercely contagious smile. A storyteller through and through and someone who genuinely enjoys making others laugh, Crowley is also known as the ASU football “Tee Guy,” a moniker he couldn’t be happier to sport. Starting as the manager of the football team when he was a freshman in 1990, Crowley quickly became an integral personality on the ASU athletics staff. However, it wasn’t until his first time running out to grab the tee that he realized his true calling. “[So the first time] I jog out, jog back and start getting booed. So I thought, ‘Oh my God, what am I supposed to do?!’” So the next time he ran a bit faster. Still not getting the response he wanted, he decided what his trick would be. “Then I go, ‘Well, okay. Now I’m just going to start doing a flip,’” says Crowley. “So I ran out, ran back and did a flip and they started cheering.” Unfortunately, for Crowley, ASU’s high scoring meant that he was flipping quite a bit and his back was suffering. By the time the ’96 season came along, the flipping was shut down because they were “afraid [he] wouldn’t get up.” In lieu of the flip, Crowley decided to grab the tee during an all-out sprint—which fans noticed and began timing him, occasionally alongside a “Tee Guy” chant. However it isn’t just the stands that are fans of Crowley, he prides himself in being a smiling face on the sidelines and someone to break

the tension when things aren’t going as well as planned. College Times sat down with Mike “Tee Guy” Crowley, a speech language pathology assistant during the week, to ask him a few questions about his love of football and his dedication to the Sun Devils. (Check out his license plate!) CT: Approximately how long does it take you to run out and grab the tee? Crowley: I’d say it probably takes around eight to 10 seconds. About how many times a game do you have to retrieve the tee? Easily four times. It can get to nine or 10 times out there though. What do you do to prepare before a game? I do a lot of stretches. When the team is warming up, you’ll see me stretching [and] doing whatever I have to, and then when we’re about to kick off, I do a little bit more stretching.

Are you truly a Sun Devil for life? Oh yeah. It’s even imprinted on my tooth. So I am a Sun Devil for life.

IN THE ’00s A RANT ABOUT THE MUSIC CHOICES IN VALLEY COFFEE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

28

MIGUEL OTÁROLA • COLLEGE TIMES AO GAO

he Valley has a long list of restaurants and coffee shops, like Cartel Coffee Lab, Carly’s Bistro and Phoenix Public Market, that have consistent customer bases with generally glowing reviews of their products. Many of these are great places to sip a drink and chat with friends. Some even become alternatives to a study room or library, where people can work alone or in teams. The music that plays in the background of each of these food spaces varies across the city, but for quite a few there seems to be a pattern to play a mix of 2000s soft indie-rock— and students are starting to notice the distinction. “Carly’s Bistro is the heart of ‘Phoenix restaurant-musiccore,’ with its mix of generic classic rock and inoffensive contemporary indie rock,” says recent ASU grad Brandon Kutzler, 22. Most of these shops have an overreliance on music from

popular 2000s bands like The Shins, The Strokes, MGMT or Bon Iver. When looking at the demographic of the young Phoenix workforce, it’s easy to see the correlation. Many of them grew up listening to that music during their formative high-school years. Other places, however, have a tendency to switch the style up. For instance, Lux and Jobot Coffee and Dining in Phoenix often bring DJs to set a chill vibe for customers, or to play music from local acts like Andrew Jackson Jihad. “Jobot sometimes orbits those flavors but they’ll throw in off-kilter stuff. Hip-hop, hardcore punk, electronic music or, if you’re lucky, Sleep’s stoner-metal classic one-song album Dopesmoker at 4 a.m.,” Kutzler says. More and more young college students frequent these shops, and in general people see these as places to work during certain times of the week, whether that is in the afternoon or at 4 a.m.

on a Saturday. The music should be able to fortify those feelings of efficiency; classical, ambient or light electronic could help guide people to new music while still enhancing their productivity. Students live in a time where considerable attention is put into playlists as a musical format, with people thinking about what they listen to and what music best fits a particular activity. As more people grow comfortable using streaming sites and apps, they begin to rotate through more music faster. Valley restaurant and coffeeshop employees should adapt to the same style and be a little more selective when choosing music. These gathering spaces play a pivotal role in guiding people’s music choices, and reduce the risk of music becoming stale.

MAKIN’ IT RAIN

CASH CASH DOLES OUT SINGLES CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI • COLLEGE TIMES

T

he EDM trio Cash Cash has toured the world, thanks to hits like “Lightning” with the Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik and the “Untouchable” collaboration with Tritonal. But there’s nothing better for Cash Cash’s Jean Paul Makhlouf than being at home in New Jersey. “I’m in the Garden State, baby!” Makhlouf says when asked where he’s calling from. “But Arizona is always a good time; always is—ASU, Scottsdale.” Makhlouf and his Cash Cash cohorts—brother Alex, as well as Sam Frisch—will return to the Grand Canyon

State to perform at Livewire in Scottsdale at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 24. The trio will be joined by Tritonal. “Live shows are fun,” Makhlouf says. “We try and mix it up a lot. We’ll play a lot of the old stuff, a lot of new stuff. We have a lot of edits. We’ll mix up original songs that we have with a remix, or a remix that maybe a friend made for us. We do everything live. We do a lot of sampling live, too.” That camaraderie is important to Makhlouf. “The thing with DJs is that we’re all friends,” he says. “The support in the community is

really positive. Everybody’s remixing everybody’s stuff. “I think that’s [what’s] helping the scene grow so fast.” Cash Cash’s career is expanding just as quickly, with a string of successful tracks. Makhlouf admits Cash Cash is working on its next album, but the act is taking its time. For the time being, they’re focusing on releasing well thought-out singles. “Right now we’re doing singles and it’s been going well,” Makhlouf says. “There’s not as much pressure. When the album’s ready, it’s not going to feel like it was thrown together. This is the way

everything should sound. It’s not like anything got comprised. It really helps us focus on the single that we’re pushing at a certain time. That’s the mindset we’re in.” Cash Cash is just as well known for its own singles as it is for its remixes of acts like Krewella, Capital Cities, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars. “The remixes, honestly for us, are usually the easiest,” he says. “We’ll get an a cappella, an open canvas, and we can do whatever we want. It leaves so much open. “The real challenge is with our original music. We can spend days and days thinking we can do it this way or that way. We can do it this way and then this way. Then there’s this other way we can try. You end up going crazy.”

ENJOYING THE RIDE

SUPPORTING TAYLOR SWIFT ON HER WORLD TOUR, VANCE JOY GOES WITH THE FLOW CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI

aidback Aussie singersong writer Vance Joy is probably the last person anyone would expect to see at the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight in Las Vegas. The subtle, beachy beats of “Riptide” and “Mess is Mine” aren’t exactly on par with a major pummeling. The fight may have been abbreviated, but he made an Arizona connection. “I met a couple of nice people from Arizona, actually, in Las Vegas at the Manny Pacquiao fight,” says Joy, whose real name is James Keough. “It was the coolest thing to do. The fight wasn’t very good. When Manny got a few punches in, that was the moment of excitement. That was really great. I had a great time. I had no regrets about paying a stupid amount of money for the ticket.” The friendship he forged with the couple makes his visits to the Grand Canyon State lovely. “That, and when I [played] in Tempe, I went rollerblading by the lake near the venue—those are experiences of Arizona that were nice,” he says. Joy is returning to the area for two shows supporting Taylor Swift on her 1989 World Tour, which comes to Gila River Arena in Glendale on Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18. Calling from his bus “somewhere between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.,” Joy explains it’s been a learning experience to tour with the global superstar.

“It’s interesting to see what happens when you walk out in front of so many people,” he says. “I say, ‘Hey everybody’ and I get a response. It’s funny how intimate a big venue can feel.” “I want to go out there and do my best,” he says. “I want to be OK with that feeling of nervousness and uncertainty. If you’re going to try something new that night, just give it a go. I think it’s a bit of a challenge to have.” As for his music, “Riptide” and “Mess is Mine” can both be found on his 2014 release Dream Your Life Away. The collection is so successful that “Riptide” alone has been streamed on Spotify more than 225 million times. “I was not expecting [‘Riptide’] to have done what it did,” he says about the song’s success. “In a way, I wasn’t surprised because by the time I got to America, it had already done well in Australia and gotten that special response. “But I was told it was going to be difficult to break the States from my record label. They said, ‘You have to play a lot of radio stations. You’ll be working hard and doing it, doing it, doing it.’ It was good to have in my head. It prepares you for that.”

BIG GUY IN A

PARK T HOW THE EFF DID SUMMER ENDS MUSIC FESTIVAL GET KANYE?! MIGUEL OTÁROLA • COLLEGE TIMES

ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

empe Beach Park has really stepped up its game over the last few years. Just take March’s Pot of Gold Music Festival, which brought four days packed with artists like Bastille, Kendrick Lamar and Fall Out Boy. After a summer break, the field is set for another festival this September—the second annual Summer Ends Music Festival. The last date of

the four-day fest particularly stands out, finishing with a oneand-a-half hour set by the oneand-only Kanye West. That night’s lineup was booked with direction from Kanye West’s representative, according to Tom Lapenna, owner of Luckyman Concerts, which organized the festival. Luckyman had previously promoted Kanye during his 2013 Yeezus tour stop at US Airways Center. “This year we opted to go after one headliner each day that we knew would have a great draw and then add support acts that complement the headliner,” Lapenna says. To say it’s exciting for the festival to book such a huge artist for a somewhat unlikely venue is an understatement, especially considering Variety reported last year that a

booking for Kanye ranges from $400,000 to $600,000 and he headlined the international festival phenomenon Glastonbury this year. However they convinced him to come to our little “beach,” we’re glad they did. But the loaded Sunday bill comes at a hefty price. Full-price tickets for the night are $135, in comparison to the $54.50 price for each of the other three days of the fest. On the plus side, Kanye draws attention wherever he goes, so here’s to hoping that this is just the beginning of even more great artists to come.

WE DON’T BELIEVE IN

HOROSCOPES! TOTALLY ACCURATE PREDICTIONS YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT

AQUARIUS

TAURUS

LEO

SCORPIO

(JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18)

(APRIL 22 – MAY 20)

(JULY 23 – AUGUST 22)

(OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21)

This is the dawwwwning of the age of Aquarius, the age of Aquarius. Aquarius! Aquarius! Harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding. No more falsehoods or derisions. Golden living, dreams of visions. Mystic crystal revelation and the mind’s true liberation. (You’ll drop your phone in the toilet. Way to go, butterfingers.)

Typical to your very Taurus-y lazy side, you’ll binge watch the entire new season of “Orange is the New Black” and then binge eat an entire pecan pie. Pecans don’t agree with you. You know that. So was it really worth it, Taurus? Just something to think about.

The new school year means new beginnings, except for you and the guy who awkwardly asked you out after breathing down your neck all last semester. You’ll have another class together. One of you has to drop the class now. Who will it be?

While inebriated you’ll discover what you believe to be the next great idea in engineering and write it down in a frenzy. In the light of day it’ll look pretty stupid, so you’ll use that piece of paper to dispose of your gum.

GEMINI

VIRGO

(MAY 21 – JUNE 21)

(AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22)

Uh, so... this month does not hold great things for you. All we’re going to say is to triple check that the recipient of your texts is who you intend it to be. Also, you might want to get that discoloration checked out. It’s like... grey. That’s never a good sign.

You’ll likely experience some conflict during the month, which means you’re a normal human being that communicates with other human beings. Instead of talking to people, maybe just confide in your cat or whatever. The other people will probably appreciate it.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20)

You’ll go out to a cool new restaurant and be torn between the fish and the chicken. You’ll remember that the friend you’re with still thinks you’re a vegetarian, so you’ll choose a salad, which won’t be nearly as good as the two meat options. Maybe it’s time to be honest with yourself, Pisces? ECOLLEGETIMES.COM | AUGUST 13, 2015

36

CANCER ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 21)

You consider yourself a Kim, but let’s face it, you’re probably more of a Kourtney most days. Oddly, these next two weeks will make you feel more like a Kendall. Werk it.

(JUNE 22 – JULY 22)

LIBRA

The new school year means new beginnings, except for you and that girl who rejected you at the end of last semester when you asked her out. You’ll have another class together. One of you has to drop the class now. Who will it be?

You’ll develop a new passion for the culinary arts, creative Libra. Over time, this will lead to a passion for elastic pants. But live it up for now! Hurray for trying new things!

(SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22)

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21)

Jason will send you a vague text after not talking to you for, like, six months after that thing with Jennifer. Why is he acting so weird? Can he not call you like a normal person and talk it out? And what’s the deal with Jennifer anyway? She’s probably just jealous. Also, maybe watch your money this month or something. (Seriously, we don’t trust Jennifer.)

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19)

Try something new this month. A new TV show, a new movie—maybe even a new flavor of ice cream! Whatever you do, just stay inside. Dear God, just stay inside.
