NEWS Tidal surges deepened parts of Ventura Harbor Need to repair damage prompts emergency resolution

I

n what Ventura Harbor officials are calling a “silver lining,” the entrance channel and portions of the inner harbor were deepened by powerful tidal surges that rolled through the harbor on Jan. 14 as a result of an undersea volcanic eruption near the Polynesian island nation of Tonga. The surges also led to damage to public and private property, prompting an Emergency Resolution from the Ventura Port Commission.

On Jan. 19, In the wake of lasting damage at Ventura Harbor from the Jan. 14 tsunami surges, the Ventura Port District Board of Commissioners passed a resolution declaring a state of emergency at the harbor.

“Our commission’s swift action in adopting an emergency resolution paves the way for the repair and replacement of Port District assets,” said Brian Pendleton, general manager of the Ventura Port District. “It will also help the port to expedite and restore redundancy for our on-water patrol and emergency response capabilities.”

The resolution passed by the commissioners gives Pendleton extra authority to act in order to repair or otherwise respond to the damage caused by the recent unpredictable tidal surges.

The expanded authority granted includes the

ability to submit permit applications for any development work needed to be done, to obtain equipment and supplies “for the purpose of making the District’s docks safe and functional.” The resolution also waives the notice requirements for contracts going to bid for work related to repairing the harbor.

At all future meetings while the resolution is in effect, Pendleton will provide a report on actions taken under the resolution. The resolution required a 4/5 vote and will be reviewed at every regularly scheduled meeting to determine whether the action needs to be continued.

Agencies involved with repair work that involves pile replacement or other issues involving the seafloor include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board.

The harbor reported at least two dozen docks were damaged at various marina locations and private residences in the area. Two Harbor Patrol boats were “rendered out of commission.” No injuries were reported as a result of the tidal changes.

“Several gangways got dumped into the water off docks. Several docks were damaged. My

Photo submitted personal dock got torn off the moorings,” said Raj Reddy, a Ventura Keys resident who shared what he witnessed with the Ventura County Reporter via email. “One very large yacht tore off its moorings with its dock and Duffy boat still attached and as it floated away it caught its neighbor’s boat. Fortunately we saw it happen real time and called Harbor Patrol and they caught it.”

After the tsunami activity subsided, Senior Harbor Patrol Officer Pat Hummer conducted “a depth sounding to evaluate the conditions of the entrance channel and inner harbor,” Ventura Harbor reported in a written statement. The

soundings showed sand had been removed by the powerful water surges and increased the water depth in the entrance channel and portions of the inner harbor.

The harbor and the public launch ramp are open, and all recreational activities have resumed, but harbor officials are asking the public to be observant and cautious as navigation buoys were displaced by the strong tides and debris may still be in the water, just under the surface. www.venturaharbor.com

I’m originally from the Pacific Northwest (Greater Seattle Area), then moved to Arizona to escape from the rain. And that’s when it all began; my love for Orangetheory Fitness! It was in Phoenix, Arizona that I was introduced to Orangetheory in its early stages. After touring the second-ever location in Scottsdale and taking a class at the Paradise Valley studio, I knew this exciting new company had struck fitness gold with their concept — which gets their members great results and I wanted to be a part of it. After working for the company for a couple of years, my family and I explored franchise opportunities with Orangetheory and learned that there were locations available to own and 6—

operate in Ventura County close to family. Once we were able to secure franchise licenses, I packed up everything I owned to begin my exciting new life in California! I currently reside in Camarillo.

When did you open your business?

I opened my first Orangetheory location in 2015. I knew from the special connections with members (and even some life-long friendships) that I was doing what I was meant to be doing. What is better than helping others become healthy and strong and getting to share in their journey?

What inspired you to start this business?

Growing up, I wasn’t in the best shape and certainly was not the most athletic kid on the block. Being from a family with a fitness background, this was especially uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing and even depressing. As a child I always admired the rest of my family for how fit and active they were, even though it made me feel like somewhat of an outcast. In high school, I took a life-changing trip with my family to Europe. We walked all over the towns we visited, ate healthier than what I was used to and even ended most nights with family fitness challenges (mainly push up challenges). After the three-week trip, I and many others noticed the change in my physique and it really boosted my confidence

and showed me how hard work and consistency can pay off in fitness.

With Orangetheory Fitness we have changed many lives for the better. And in some cases, fitness and health have saved lives in addition to making people happier and more fulfilled. When could physical and mental fitness be more important than now during this pandemic crisis? Overall it has been an incredibly rewarding career.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I start my day by feeding and letting out my dog, Thor. He’s a big baby and LOVES coming to Orangetheory to see the members.

After getting Thor taken care of, I spend a few minutes on prayer and reflection, focusing mainly on all I’m grateful for in my life. This sets the mindset table for the day and gets me centered.

From here, I check emails and respond to miscellaneous work texts before hitting the gym. Being in fitness every workday has its own agendas and items to attack. Hitting the gym earlier in the day works for me as it gets my blood pumping and my brain firing.

From there, it’s time to refuel with food and then get Thor his walk before coaching classes, then cleaning and closing the studio(s). After work I enjoy cooking at the house with some music on and the occasional glass of wine.

What do you find most challenging about your work?

What’s most rewarding?

The most challenging part of business is finding and keeping good employees. The good ones are always worth keeping as they act as a bridge to help our members reach their goals.

I intentionally seek out people who don’t just come to work for a paycheck but share my passion for helping others improve their quality of life and create a true fitness community.

The most rewarding part of this business is watching members over time and learning about their lives.

Their kids’ and dogs’ names. Their work. And about what Orangetheory means and does for them and for their life. Their “WHY.” As a coach, it’s also incredibly rewarding to see members improve their treadmill speeds, rowing performance and strength training over time! Best of all is seeing a member whose heart rate is recovering faster in class because their most important muscle — the heart — is getting STRONGER. This coincides with our company-wide mantra, which is “More Life!”

Where do you see things going with your business in the near future? How about in the next 5-10 years?

With more fitness businesses focusing on the digital side of things, I think the industry will realize over time how important the

We pride ourselves on being the originators and leaders in heart rate-based training since 2010 and that’s what we will aim to continue doing.

I think the public is realizing that facilities or equipment that they don’t use is a waste of money. We like to say “$10 is stupid expensive for a gym (or equipment) that doesn’t get you results and $100 is inexpensive for something that changes your life.”

People will lose interest if they don’t get results, get injured, are allowed to plateau or don’t enjoy what they are doing. People leave facilities but they don’t leave friends or results.

To cope, upgrades to cleaning mechanisms and increases in frequency of cleaning sewers would raise water management costs.

IIT Sports, Inc., the area’s first hypergravity training center (and possibly the first in California), opened three months ago in Camarillo, and clients and coaches say it’s making a big difference in combating neuromuscular degeneration.

“No one has a program who can help me except for these people, this is more specific,” said Dennis Lucier, 72, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years ago and has been with the gym since last month. “I saw my cousin deteriorate [from Parkinson’s disease], and I didn’t want to end up like him.”

Lucier said thanks to hypergravity train-

ing he feels he’s fighting the effects of Parkinson’s despite his age and condition.

The benefits of hypergravity Hypergravity is defined as the condition whereby the force of gravity exceeds that on the surface of the Earth. Hypergravity research tends to be associated with flight and space travel, as hypergravity conditions

are often created to study the response of equipment and human physiology during, say, aerial combat and space missions.

It has physical therapy applications as well, which James Foster has been developing for 23 years. Foster, a former professional baseball player and boxer, founded Gravity+™ Systems, based in Oxnard and Porter Ranch, and its trademarked Gravity+

that may have been difficult before using the gear to be more accessible. Foster said users need only to stay in the suit for 10 to 20 minutes in order to feel a difference.

“This is so cutting edge,” said Adam Flores, local pro heavyweight champion boxer and HIIT Sports CEO and coach. “There is absolutely nothing in the world of fitness like this.”

After Hank Laubacher Sr. was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he decided he wanted to do what he could to combat the symptoms of his condition. This led to his work with the hypergravity suit and the Flores brothers to create and maintain an effective exercise routine.

“Hank’s improved a lot,” Adam Flores said. “Plus he’s been very dedicated. It takes quite a bit of effort. You can’t just think about it, you have to actually do it.”

The family began training on

vcreporter.com the Laubacher farm. As word spread of their unique exercise regimen, others wanted in. Adam said they aimed to open the gym much sooner, but the timing of the pandemic caused much delay.

This didn’t stop the family from eventually sharing their work with the community, however.

“My father has had Parkinson’s for about 12 years now, and it’s amazing what [the suit] can do for people,” said Beth Laubacher-Baumer, Hank Laubacher Sr.’s daughter and a HIIT Sports coach.

“I’m so glad we have the gravity suit and a [support] group here because it just takes things up another level.”

The whole Laubacher family are now regulars at the gym. Beth said both her father Hank Sr. and mother Margaret “Gigi” Laubacher have built strength despite their age through their commitment to exercise.

“I think the biggest aspect is not just that Hank and Margaret are taking care of themselves, but also that the family wants to help other people that are afflicted as well,” Foster said.

He explained that diseases like Parkinson’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as the natural aging of the body, often lead to difficulty or pain in moving the body — which can then result in afflicted people exercising less.

Falling into a sedentary lifestyle, however, tends to further neuromuscular diseases and the body’s aging process.

Foster added that 12% of deaths worldwide are related to neuromuscular diseases, which includes injuries like falling due to not having full muscular control over the body. He said that this can be combated by reinforcing energetic and natural movements rather than defaulting to canes, walkers and inactive habits.

“The elderly need intensity more than anyone,” Foster said.

“What they need is to be moving more and more dynamically.”

Another unique addition to HIIT Sports is neuroboxing, which also played a large part in Hank Sr.’s rehabilitation. The nonprofit program was founded by martial arts master Jennifer Parkinson, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 32. Neuroboxing creates customized workout routines that

focus on what specific movements need to be strengthened for each individual and their neurological condition.

“We have a guy who crushed his spinal cord, he was in a wheelchair like six months ago and now he’s out there boxing,” Beth said.

Highly personalized approach On top of this, the gym features strength and conditioning training, diet programs and yoga. The team says what makes this gym different from others is that their workouts and programs are highly personalized. Class sizes are smaller and data is taken on clients to measure their physical progress and track if they’re ready for a more intense workout.

“We’re not looking to get a foot to fit a shoe, we want to get a shoe to fit a foot,” Foster said. “Overall, it may look like another gym from the outside, but you can accomplish a lot more here a lot faster than any place else.”

The gym offers a free support group as well for those experiencing neuromuscular disorders (10-11 a.m on the first and third Friday of every month). The group is led by Hanalei Lumley, a neurotherapist and speech and language pathologist at Two Trees Physical Therapy. The group is guided through some movements like yoga and physical therapy and provides a space where people dealing with similar conditions can connect.

Through Adam's nonprofit All Stars United, which helped find the location the gym is currently in, HIIT Sports also has exercise programs for kids and teenagers, including subsidized classes for youths who may have a hard time paying otherwise.

“We don’t want to be the traditional gym,” Cicilio Flores said.

“We want to help and guide people and make sure that they get results and, most importantly, don’t get hurt.”

A conversation with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champ Fabio Leopoldo.

n the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) in general, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in particular, Fabio Leopoldo needs no introduction. The Brazilian native who now calls Ventura home is a fourth-degree black belt and world champion several times over. He’s also won the Pan American Championship six times and Brazil’s national title twice.

Most recently, he took first place in his division (Master 3/Open Class for male black belts) at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s 2021 World Master Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which took place in Las Vegas in November.

Lucky for local martial arts fans, Leopoldo is also a studio owner and teacher. As founder and head instructor of Morumbi Jiu Jitsu (with locations in Ventura and Thousand Oaks), “Professor Fabio” has trained dozens of students at all levels — from kids to black belts now competing professionally — while continuing to make time for family, friends and his own tournaments.

He also took time to talk to the Ventura County Reporter about his career in MMA, moving to Ventura and finding a healthy lifestyle on and off the mat.

How old were you when you first started martial arts? What inspired you to take up the practice?

Fabio Leopoldo: I first started martial arts training between 4 and 8 years old. I was practicing judo and karate, but I began serious training around the age of 15. I probably started doing martial arts because I was raised by a single mom, and I had so much energy. Like all kids, I was also influenced by action movies,TV shows and UFC.

Who were some of your earliest influences?

My cousin, who used to be on the Brazilian Olympic judo team, inspired me to rejoin martial arts January 27, 2022 —

FEATURE training; and then, I was inspired by master Rickson Gracie, the famous, undefeated Brazilian martial arts champion. But the biggest one was my grandfather, who supported me since day one and was always with me on my competitions.

Tell us a little bit about how your BJJ and MMA skills developed. Where did you train? What practices did you learn?

I was really fortunate to have learned Jiu Jitsu directly from the Gracie family. This was in the early days of MMA when various martial arts styles competed against one another. I trained in São Paulo at the Ryan Gracie Academy, and studied Jiu Jitsu, no-gi Jiu Jitsu (Jiu Jitsu without the traditional uniform), judo and MMA. How is no-gi Jiu Jitsu different from traditional Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu using the kimono (the loose, white uniform) is a more traditional training style. No-gi used to be more for self-defense, like grappling, or for people who are training in MMA. No-gi has become very popular because it incorporates many moves found in traditional wrestling, which is very familiar in the west.

Why did you choose to go professional with MMA? Up to 2002, I concentrated on traditional Jiu Jitsu. However, after 2002, when I won the World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championship, I decided to accept the challenges of MMA, and represent Jiu Jitsu (and my academy) in MMA competition. Additionally, during this period, I was assisting my professor, Ryan Gracie, with all his matches and competitions. So, it’s understandable that I wanted to follow in his footsteps.

How does training as a professional differ from someone who is an accomplished and enthusiastic amateur?

I think the intensity of the training makes the difference, as well as the mindset outside of training.

How long have you been competing professionally?

I have been competing professionally since around 2000, when 14 —

I was promoted to black belt; however, I was competing in Jiu Jitsu since 1995.

When you’re not training and teaching, how do you spend your time? What do you do for fun?

Well, my family is first. I have two healthy, active boys, ages 8 and 5, and we always do things together on weekends. On Sunday we enjoy going to church and, if time permits, we’ll all go to the beach to surf or skateboard and we all enjoy the beautiful California coast. We also frequently schedule Morumbi events on weekends, so this also takes up a lot of time.

When did you arrive in Ventura County? What brought you here?

Between 2006 and 2008, I moved between Brazil and New York, training and competing. I have always followed a healthy lifestyle, so, when I decided to immigrate to the U.S. I searched and searched for a location where I could enjoy mild weather, practice a healthy lifestyle, raise my family and also practice surfing, which I love. So, in 2007, when I visited Ventura, I fell in love with the area and decided to establish my academies there.

What does living a healthy lifestyle mean to you?

I came from a big city in Brazil, the fifth biggest in the world, with a great deal of traffic, noise, pollution and congestion. This is why I wanted to live near the ocean, with my family, in harmony with nature, athletics, nutrition and spiritual well-being.

When did you open Morumbi Jiu Jitsu?

I opened my first academy in Brazil in 1999, which is still in operation, and which has promoted over 100 black belts. I opened my Ventura academy in 2008, and in 2009, I opened in Thousand Oaks. We offer training in Jiu Jitsu, self-defense, kick-boxing, strength and conditioning, for adults and children.

Do you have professionals that train at your studio?

How do you help them develop their skills?

Certainly. We host world-class Jiu Jitsu competitors, former UFC fighters, and I also coach Jordan Wright, who is currently fighting on the UFC. Most of our students are there to learn how to defend themselves and train in Jiu Jitsu. We also have a lot of talented fighters that train together. We have beginner Jiu Jitsu, intermediate, advanced and MMA classes.

What, in your opinion, are some of the benefits of taking up a practice like BJJ,

Jiu Jitsu training is ideal for self-defense, weight control and confidence. Every youngster and adult can benefit from our curriculum.

What is your training regimen like today?

When not training for competition, I train three times a week in Jiu Jitsu, and two times in strength and conditioning. I think that it’s important to also remember that I’m always on the mat teaching. If training for competition, I increase my number of Jiu Jitsu training, and also increase the intensity of my strength and conditioning training.

Your day starts with making breakfast for the family. Do you like to cook?

Actually, I cook breakfast whenever my wife has already left home, in the morning. I like to cook, but there’s really no time for the kitchen with two growing kids, and a business with two locations. However, on the weekends, I like to barbecue with my wife and kids. We frequently have friends and guests dropping by, so my wife and I love to prepare Brazilian foods on the grill.

Do you have a family? If so, do they participate in MMA as well?

Yes, I am very proud of my family. My wife, Dini (who holds a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu), teaches strength and conditioning classes at both academies, and my children are active students. By the way, both my kids love to compete!

Describe a typical day/ week for you.

First, I make breakfast for my family. Then, I work on my mobility and my flexibility for about 30

Since we’re on the subject, what kinds of foods do you eat to stay healthy?

I try to avoid excess sugar and gluten. I follow a healthy diet. I like to eat berries, avocados, eggs, Acai, greens and other high-protein foods. The good thing is, my wife eats super healthy as well. I see our body as the engine of a car: If you put good fuel in, you will definitely perform better in all aspects. I try not to relate to food as a pleasure.

You mentioned earlier that you’re an avid surfer. What are some of your favorite spots to surf?

My favorite surfing spots are mostly Ventura area locations.

Ventura has many great surf spots; it all depends on the swell direction. The truth is, we are lucky to live in this area.

What do you see in the near future for your MMA career?

Do you plan to continue to compete? How about further down the road, in 10 years or more?

Well, I’m 45 years old, and my main goal now is to train the next generation, like Jordan Wright, who is on his way to a world championship.

Currently, my Jiu Jitsu skills are at their peak, and I look forward to winning the World Jiu Jitsu Championship this year.

Any new plans in store for Morumbi Jiu Jitsu?

In addition to providing the best Jiu Jitsu and martial arts training possible (especially for kids,) this year our academy goal is also to be voted as the “Best Martial Arts Academy” in Ventura, for the 14th year in a row!

That is the question presented during the the theatrical run of the one-woman play La Divina: The Last Interview of Maria Callas at the NAMBA Performing Arts Space in downtown Ventura.

Winner of the 2021 Orlando Fringe Critics’ Choice Award for Best Individual Performance in a Drama, La Divina is the brainchild of Shelley Cooper, currently assistant professor of musical theater at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.

Cooper has a broad background in musical theater, performing for such diverse organizations as the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chicago Summer Opera, and international events such as the Bangkok Theatre Festival in Thailand. Her credits include Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, The Little Mermaid and Il barbiere di Siviglia.

Her journey toward La Divina is a story unto itself.

“I grew up studying musical theater as a kid,” she recalled. “Then, at 18 or 19, my voice teacher discovered that I was a soprano.

When I went to college, there was no musical theater degree. They had acting and they had voice, so I spent four years of my life focusing on my acting, and then I studied opera’s classical repertoire and technique.”

The foundation was laid, but the piece itself came from what Cooper described as rejection. In her second year of graduate

In some ways solo work can be more challenging, he says. “As a solo, you kind of dangle on a rope with no net,” he says, chuckling, “whereas with The Mavericks, the band is my net, and it’s quite a force. But I have an honest relationship with the audience, and solo shows are a little more relaxed, with time for more stories, anecdotes and conversations. And I play what I want — old stuff, standards, covers, whatever comes to mind.

The Mavericks is a whole ’nother monster; we’re there to rock the house. And I love doing both.”

Born to Cuban immigrant parents whose eclectic tastes (from country to Cuban to classical) made him open to all music as he was growing up, Malo is happy to be connected with multiple musical genres, and to avoid being labeled.

“I take a page from the Grateful Dead playbook,” he says. “Jerry Garcia once said, ‘You know, it’s not up to us to define it. We just make music and let you guys define it. This way, we belong to everyone.’ It embodies how I feel about our music.”

Having released its first Spanish-language album in 2020 (En Español), The Mavericks continue to work on new music, with their next album planned sometime next year.

“We’d love to go and record in Jamaica with some of our Jamaican heroes,” Malo says. “And we’re looking at different collaborations with other artists.

We always look to expand on what we’ve done, and keep evolving musically.”

The business of making music, he continues with a smile, can be “incredibly gratifying at times, and very frustrating at times. But I love playing music, and I love this band; it’s what I’ve always done.

“And I have no other marketable skills,” he adds, laughing, “so I feel lucky to be doing this.”
