At the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee’s Jan. 24 countdown event for next year’s big game, Gov. Doug Ducey touted the festivities as an ideal way to show off the West Valley to the world. The event is slated for Feb. 23, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The desire to use football’s biggest event to showcase Arizona is reflected in the Super Bowl LVII 2023 logo, which was unveiled at the event. It features the shape of Arizona prominently and includes colors reminiscent of a desert sky at sunset, “intended to picture our endless skies here … and endless potential,” said Jay Parry, host committee president and chief executive officer. After the speeches at the Bank of America Tower in Downtown Phoenix, Glendale city

officials said Super Bowl LVII would benefit everyone. However, the city is ready to capture a larger share of Super Bowl revenue than it did in 2015, the last time Glendale hosted the game. Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said the city has many (From left) Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee board Chair David Rousmore hotels and seau; Gov. David Stutzman, 65, died of cancers recognized by the Arizona Fallen Firefighter Memorial Committee as connected to their service in the fire depart-

ment. These local losses to cancer underscore the problem of occupational cancer for firefighters. The International Fire Fighters Association has designated January as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month to draw more attention to the issue. Modern buildings contain a multitude of materials, and when a structure is on fire, hundreds of different chemicals in gases, vapors and particulates may be released. among its members so firefighters can take steps to reduce risk. The union also wants to raise public awareness to put pressure on state governments to make it easier for firefighters experiencing occupational cancer to access workers’ compensation. During this year’s month of awareness, Arizona firefighters had a victory to celebrate: After years of wrangling, in April the state Legislature passed SB 1451, a bill that removed hurdles to accessing workers’ compensation for occupational cancer, and added breast and ovarian cancer to the
