Historical society remains in limbo

Peoria City Council was scheduled to hear discussion and staff recommendations on January 22, with regard to the ongoing internal disputes of the Peoria Arizona Historical Society (PAHS) museums.

The city of Peoria owns five buildings in the Old Town area. PAHS leases use of the city-owned facilities for its housing of the collection of historical items and operation of the museums.

However, access to all of the museum buildings has been blocked by the city since May 2017. The city had closed the buildings to install air-conditioning equipment and replace the doors to the main entrance of the two-story Peoria Central School Museum.

Goldwater supports Gov. Ducey’s push to protect Arizonans’ right to earn a living Unnecessary and cumbersome occupational licensing laws prevent countless Arizonans from practicing their profession of choice and moving up the economic ladder. The Goldwater Institute supports Governor Doug Ducey’s commitment to breaking down regulatory barriers to people’s right to earn an honest living, as he discussed in his State of the State address today: One hundred thousand people will move here this year. There’s a job available for every single one of them. Lots of people are trained and certified in other states. Standing in their way of earning a living in Arizona — our own licensing boards and their cronies who tell them, ‘You can’t work here. You haven’t paid the piper.’ Let’s stop this foolishness…

And before those unelected boards feign outrage, let’s remember. Workers don’t lose their skills simply because they move to Arizona. And in the name of good government, let’s have the bullies on these boards answer these three questions: What do you exist to do, how do you know you are doing it well, and who would miss you if you were gone?”

The Goldwater Institute has led the

The Institute won a major victory for the right to earn a living in 2014 when it successfully challenged the Arizona Board of Cosmetology’s attempts to needlessly regulate Lauren Boice, a small-business owner who connects terminally ill patients with beauty service-providers.

In 2017, Arizona became the first state in the country to enact the Right to Earn a Living Act, a law designed by the Institute to protect individuals’ freedom to pursue their chosen profession. Later that year, the Institute helped a behavioral health counselor successfully challenge an Arizona state board’s rule under the newly enacted law, thereby enabling her to practice her

profession. Last year, Arizona enacted Goldwater Institute bills that increased transparency in occupational licensing boards, expanded access to dental care by opening the door to dental therapists, and made it easier for low-income Arizonans to challenge burdensome occupational regulations.

“State government should not prevent Arizonans from pursuing their professions, earning a living, and improving their lives,” said Victor Riches, president and CEO of the Goldwater Institute. “The Goldwater Institute supports Gov. Ducey’s desire to continue lowering barriers to entrepreneurship so that Arizonans’ right to earn a living is protected.”

With the blessing of its namesake, the Goldwater Institute opened in 1988. Its early years focused on defending liberty in Barry Goldwater’s home state of Arizona. Today, the Goldwater Institute is a national leader for constitutionally limited government respected by the left and right for its adherence to principle and real world impact. No less a liberal icon than the New York Times calls the Goldwater Institute a “watchdog for conservative ideals” that plays an “outsize role” in American political life.

We’ve talked before about the Democrats redefining words. Example: You disagree with a person of color; therefore, you are a racist. You disagree with those who want to destroy long standing statues; therefore, you are a racist. You believe in marriage between a man and a woman; therefore, you hate homosexuals. You expect everyone to follow the rules of common courtesy; you have offended someone.

You believe in limited government and personal responsibility; therefore, you are politically incorrect. You can think of many more examples, even words you use that only the Dems consider racist or offensive

or politically incorrect.

Now, the latest Democrat avoidance of factual discussion comes with the “wall.”

The Dem leaders several years ago called for better border security. President Clinton in 1995 and President Obama in 2013, both addressed the issue in their State of the Union addresses. Diane Feinstein, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Clair McCaskill and Joe Manchin all have called for more border security. (In 2013, All 54 Democrats voted to pass The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, And Immigration Modernization Act. (S. 744, Roll Call Vote #168 : Passed 68-32: R 14-32; D 52-0; I 1-0, 6/27/13 which called for 700 miles of fencing) President Obama even talked

about a “fence.” But, today, because they are losing their stand on other vital government issues, they have retreated to calling names and redefining words. Kristen Sinema, just today (January 12), called for a “barrier” at the border, but she is opposing a “wall” at the border. Dems whine and cry about the 800,000 government employees who are without paychecks, but they themselves are obstructing discussion, compromise and accomplishment because of a technical word redefinition.

“Barrier,” “fence,” or “wall?”

You may well remember that Slick redefined words when he said on national TV, “I did not have sex with that woman.”

FROM HISTORICAL On 1 During the almost two years since the closing, a dispute has risen between two factions within the historical society.

Two different sets of boards of director now exist, each claiming it is the legal board. Two lawsuits have been filed.

Two law firms have been hired.

January 1, 2018, officers of the “old board,” as it has come to be called, filed a lawsuit against officers of the “new board.” The plaintiff — old board officers — are William Bercu (president), Kathleen Montoya-Moore (treasurer) and Janet Gilsdorf (secretary). Moore was elected treasurer August 16, 2016, while Bercu and Gilsdorf were elected June 22, 2017, by those members maintaining allegiance to the old board after the new board had elected its own officers and directors May 31, 2017.

An amended lawsuit was filed April 9, 2018, naming all of the directors and officers of the new board: Connie Hickle, David Sandoval, Erick McMorrow, Geri Fair, Karen Garbe, Loretta Barmes, Mike Heath and Kevin Kosier.

In the first paragraph of the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim:

“Plaintiff are the duly elected officers of Defendant Peoria Arizona Historical Society, Inc., a non-profit corporation, and bring this action on behalf of the corporation against the individual defendants under Arizona’s Uniform Declaratory Judgment Act. Given the egregious and fraudulent misconduct of the individual Defendants, further litigation against those defendants is anticipated after the Court construes the rights of the Plaintiffs. Potential claims against the individual Defendants include fraud,’ negligent misrepresentation, tortious interference, and misappropriation of trade secrets.”

In the meantime, both sides wish to open the museums and get on with the business of conducting tours and displaying historical items for the public.

In an interview January 17, City Manager Jeff Tyne said, “The city is very concerned. It’s very difficult to be a landlord when we don’t necessarily know who the tenant is. Council is frustrated about the perception we’re in possession of assets. As they’re dealing with disagreements and disputes, we have materials and artifacts not on display.”

In a press release issued by the city later that same afternoon, Tyne wrote, “There is a public misconception that the city of Peoria has jurisdiction over PAHS and the contents contained in these buildings.”

During his interview earlier, Tyne said, “It’s distressing,” citing the society’s “wonderful concept, trying to enhance our heritage,” while at the same time, the city is “trying to revitalize and maintain our historical heritage.”

“What we want to impress is the arrangement,” Tyne said. “We are serving as the landlord, but we do not have any rights to what’s in there. But, we have a responsibility to protect (those assets) for the actual owner. At the same time, there is a false assumption this is a city

The.question.of.by-laws Phoenix attorney Frank Mead represents the old board in the lawsuit, which now is a year old. His clients question the validity of the 2014 bylaws cited by the new board, saying there was no evidence they were adopted or ratified.

So, the bylaws adopted by the society in 1990, when it was just a club, are being followed by the old board.

When the new board held its first meeting May 31, 2017, those who attended were told letters were sent to all members of the society giving notice of the meeting, and votes were tallied at that time to elect new officers. None of the old board members were present.

Because all of the museum buildings were locked up, the meeting was held at Peoria Community Center, immediately west of the old school buildings, where a shared parking lot exists.

In.search.of.a.solution Tyne sent a letter January 16 to attorneys for both parties in the lawsuit who claim to be the rightful board of directors of the PAHS, stating the city “believes this long period of inactivity is not in the best interest of the citizens and wants PAHS back up and running as soon as possible.”

In his letter to the attorneys, Tyne offered what the city believes could be a resolution of the dispute. The city would hire an independent, third-party referee, at the city’s cost. The referee would be the “sole point of contact for all parties

involved and each group would submit directly to the referee a written explanation as to why it believes it is the rightful board of directors and why it believes the other group is not the rightful board of directors.”

The written explanation would contain the following: • A copy of the Articles of Incorporation filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission • Corporate status with the Arizona Corporation Commission • A copy of the most recent bylaws of the PAHS • Any agendas, meeting minutes, or organizational actions that support an opinion or viewpoint • If there is a dispute regarding any PAHS governance documents, provide evidence and documentation supporting that opinion or viewpoint • Any other evidence or documentation that legally demonstrates an opinion or viewpoint expressed in the written explanation • If any supporting documentation is not or cannot be provided, provide a full explanation (e.g., documents missing or never created), and furthermore,

explain why the documentation is either not needed, or not necessary, to support an opinion or viewpoint The referee would have sole authority and responsibility to determine the completeness of any documentation submitted and the discretion to request supplemental information. Once the referee determines all information needed has been submitted, there would be no further contact “whatsoever,” with the referee by either group or the city until the final decision is issued.

Once the referee issues a decision as to the rightful board of directors, the city, in Tyne’s letter to the attorneys, “will initiate negotiations to revise and update the lease agreement between the PAHS and the city. To facilitate completion of the process, the city proposed a timetable for resolution of the conflict: • Time for the city to identify and hire a referee: 30 to 45 days, maximum • Time to submit explanation and supporting documentation to referee: 45 days, maximum • Time for referee to review for completeness of submittal: 30 days, maximum • Time to submit supplemental informa-

tion, if requested by referee: 30 days, maximum • Time for referee to review and render final decision: 60 days, maximum In the council communication January 17, City Attorney Vanessa Hickman wrote, “According to contract provisions, the city has the ability to end the lease upon finding a public necessity and convenience. The city will explore this option, as well as other alternatives, in the council discussion for the item.

Going forward questions remain on how the historical society would ensure the accounting and care of private property within the buildings.”

In his January 17 press release, Tyne said, “Having exhausted efforts to mitigate the conflict and end the closure, the City has chosen to explore its rights as the property owner and will discuss various alternatives at their regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 22.

“From the beginning, the city has encouraged the disputing boards to reach an amicable resolution that would allow these important historical buildings to reopen to the public. This remains the city’s ultimate intention.”

Crisis Response Team seeks volunteers from West Valley

When you have a fire, police or medical crisis, who can help you get through the impact of possibly the worst day of your life?

Say hello to the Glendale Crisis Response Team (CRT).

The CRT is made up of about 50 volunteers trained by the Glendale Fire Department to assist firefighters, police offices and the citizens from all parts of the West Valley during 911 calls.

“Think of any reason you would call 911 and why there might be a need for crisis intervention outside of emergency medical or law enforcement,” Crisis Interventions Specialist Sara Steffan said.

“They have their specific job and we as a group have ours to assist those when they need the most assistance.”

The team specializes in being compassionate and professional during a time of need to those experiencing a crisis. Team members have a variety

of backgrounds in behavioral health, emergency medicine, victim assistance and crisis intervention. Their main job is to provide immediate crisis intervention and referrals to victims, families and witnesses after a traumatic event, as well as to guide citizens in the right direction for follow-up care.

But anyone who qualifies earns the correct training to help in the situations when people need the most immediate assistance.

“The crisis response team is a group of volunteers and interns that respond to crisis incidents such as homicide, suicide, house fires, child endangerment or anything where people need assistance,” Crisis Intervention Specialist Sarah Armbrust. “We provide people with immediate, basic needs someone may need at their worst moments.”

Volunteers.needed The Crisis Response Team is experiencing a dip in volunteers and is seeking volunteers to join the group and try and make a difference in the West Valley.

Anyone can apply for the volunteer group as long as they are 21 years of age, possess a valid Arizona driver’s license, be a team player, complete an application process, pass a background check, pass an oral interview, able to attend all training dates, work 12- or 24-hour shifts, purchase their own uniforms and shoes and attend quarterly night classes.

Individuals must also do one ridealong prior to the interview process and be a team player.

“We give them an understanding of crisis intervention and what it is like to be in fire services because it is different than volunteering at parks or the library,” Steffan said. “This is paramilitary, so you do have to follow the chain of command and if you are told no, end of story, there is no questioning authority.”

Fire Human Services Administrator Lynette Pompa said the group takes a special type of person and they focus on

helping the volunteers learn to cope.

“We don’t always know what we are walking into, but we are the immediate help before we pass them onto longterm assistance,” Pompa said. “This is not just about responding to a call, but you get life experience here and everyone has been affected by personal trauma and this is a great opportunity to use this training in everyday life.”

Staff also said anyone who meets the requirements is welcome to apply, plus they do not need to live in Glendale to be part of the team.

“We have had members join our team from as far away as Queen Creek,” Steffan said. “It is just like coming to a job, but we welcome anyone from within the West Valley that if they want a fulfilling opportunity, this is the place to come volunteer.”

Pompa added that they are called to incidents throughout the Valley and volunteers can come from throughout the area.

“We are not just Glendale, we are pretty much the West Valley and we provide mutual aid,” Pompa said. “It is not strange for us to be called out to Daisy Mountain, Anthem or Peoria and anyone from the area is free to volunteer with us.”

Pompa pointed to Armbrust as major success stories from being part of the teams. “(Armbrust) volunteered here and worked on the team while she was doing her master’s degree internship,” Pompa said “She continued volunteering here and worked for different agencies while she got her master’s and licensure and when this position became open, she is now here part of the team.”

History.of.crisis.response Normal reactions to abnormal events, such as unexpected death or crisis, include: grief, anger, hopelessness, profound sadness, confusion and despair.

For this, the fire department decided to create the Crisis Response Team in 2002.

“The Glendale Fire Department Crisis Response volunteers are there to respond to what is quite possibly the worst day of a community member’s life,” Steffan said. “Sometimes the volunteers are the only support on the traumatic scene for that individual and we go to give them immediate assistance when they need it immediately.”

The Crisis Response Team produces

a positive change by not only providing emotional support on scene, but also linking the individual with after-care services and/or a personalized follow up plan.

“We are the first help they get on the scene of what has happened,” Armbrust said. “We could have such minimal items as flip flops, so they have shoes on their feet, toothbrush and tooth paste, baby items and other minimal items.”

Critical incidents traumatize thousands of people around the US every day and such incidents include everything from vehicle collisions, suicides, homicides and others. These incidents traumatize surviving direct victims, as well as indirect victims such as the family and friends of direct victims.

Such trauma can affect people’s physical, emotional, social, financial and spiritual well-being in many ways, often severely. Crisis Response volunteers assist firefighters, police officers and citizens during 911 calls. Since 2002, the Glendale Fire Department Crisis Response Team volunteers have dedicated more than 200,000 hours assisting community members in crisis by providing emotional support, advocacy, resources and referrals.

Crisis Response volunteers have pioneered projects to better serve individuals and families that experience the effects of loss due to house fires, sudden death, rape, sexual and physical

abuse, domestic violence, child/adult crimes, and homicide. The devoted volunteers selflessly provide comfort, and care with compassion on emergency scenes that some would consider their worst nightmare.

“We have had some members stay for seven or eight years,” Steffan said.

“But, don’t get me wrong, we have also had some that say it is a little too real, so it does take a special person to be part of this team.”

Pompa said it takes a large group to run the city’s two teams.

“It takes about 50 volunteers to staff one team because we cover seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” Pompa said.

“Because it is two people at a time for 12 to 24 hours at a time; it can be an emotional experience here.”

But staff was quick to add that it is a great opportunity to become a better person by helping others who may need it more.

“This is not like any other experience you will ever have and there is no such thing as a repeat call,” Steffan said. “Some of the stories you hear just talking to people will surprise you because you are there to help them, but they may end up helping you.”

Armbrust summed up the experience best by saying, “It is a profound experience to be with someone and be a source of support for them during what is probably their worst moment of their lives.”

Pizza-eaters give so at-risk teens don’t go hungry

HART Pantry (Helping At Risk Teens) is a fairly low-key nonprofit organization that quietly gathers food bags for distribution to high school teens. It was originally organized in 2012 and began as an outreach of Peoria Presbyterian Church.

By late 2014, according to HART Pantry documents, it needed to enlarge its mission and formed a nonprofit, which became official in 2015. It also needed more room for storage and packing.

Still, it grew more, and in 2017 moved to the Lions Foundation Campus on North 99th Avenue on the outskirts of Peoria.

From one school and 14 students, HART Pantry now provides weekend food bags and other services to 150 at-risk and homeless teens weekly in Peoria, Dysart and Glendale school districts.

Thirty volunteers gather each week to pack those 150 bags and provide services to teens in need.

One local business said yes when HART officials sought help in raising money to provide more services.

Between 4 and 10 p.m. January 21, Barro’s Pizza at 83rd Avenue and Cactus Road, donated 25 percent of sales proceeds to HART Pantry if patrons designated its purchase was for the organization.

Two diners, Rita McElwain and Pam Osgood, volunteer for HART, and they contributed by eating a pizza each.

There was no final tally at press time, but Barro’s is just one sponsor that contributes to the HART Pantry cause.

manufacturing at Maricopa Community Colleges, among others – said his budget would “build, expand and align with the jobs of tomorrow.” Keeping in this realm, he gave a quick shoutout to West-MEC Superintendent Greg Donovan.

“Today, students in these programs are training to becoming nurses, pilots, pharmacists, bankers, firefighters and software developers – all before graduation,” he said. “In fact, 99 percent of CTE students graduate high school – 99 percent – a much higher rate than the national average. They perform better in mathematics and reading – and their technical skills rival professionals in the same trade.”

Citing more jobs than can be filled, and plenty of positions to fill any demand, Ducey noted an estimate that 100,000 people will move to Arizona in 2019. So, he called for lawmakers to pass a bill that will grant universal recognition for all occupational licenses.

Looking back at past successes in the Southwest Valley, Ducey recalled his visit last fall alongside Cardinals players Antoine Bethea and Corey Peters and President Michael Bidwill to the Lewis State Prison Complex’s Eagle Point Second Chance Center in Buckeye, where employers like Hickman’s Family Farms and Jacksons Car Wash offered employment opportunities to past offenders. Ducey called to secure this program with a goal of protecting public safety and reducing prison populations.

On the economy, he noted the attraction of UPS, Amazon, Andersen, Chewy Inc. and Ball Corp to the region, as well as 300,000 jobs and 300 companies statewide in the past three years.

Other brief topics on Ducey’s agenda were an updated North American trade deal (USMCA), which he said will increase trade and jobs; unemployment, which he said is at a longtime low; progress and goals in consolidating the “bloated” state government; the Border Strike Force; reduced wait times at the MVD; the Department of Child Safety; keeping the Grand Canyon open during the government shutdown; and a reversal of the state’s $1 billion deficit to a $1 billion surplus over the past four years. increasing the state’s Rainy Day Fund to $1 billion.

“If ever there were a way to protect public education, to protect the pay raises our teachers have earned and deserve, to prevent budget gimmicks, band-aids and massive cuts down the line, to avoid tax increases and budget standoffs and government shutdowns – it’s through this thoughtful, prudent and fiscally-conservative approach,” he said.

On a final note, Ducey looked back on those who passed last year, including Rep. Ed Pastor, who represented Arizona’s 2nd, 4th and 7th congressional districts; Sgt. Maximo Flores of Litchfield Park, who was killed in a plane collision off the coast of Japan; Trooper Tyler Edenhofer, who was killed on I-10 near Avondale Boulevard while in the line of duty; and Sen. John McCain, who succumbed to brain cancer.

Ducey was introduced by Swire Coca-Cola Northern Arizona Division President Roger White. WESTMARC officials Bobbi Magdaleno and Sintra Hoffman, as well as Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers also delivered their own brief remarks.

“The West Valley is home to some of the fastest-growing cities in the country as a direct result of our conscious effort

to attract businesses, focus on being financially responsible, and provide residents with a great quality of life,” Weiers said.

Hoffman, WESTMARC’s president and CEO, noted a recent grant given to WESTMARC by the Tohono O’odham Nation, which will help with a rebranding strategy that will highlight the region’s growth and assets. As a start, Hoffman cited the new Topgolf and incoming Desert Diamond West Valley Casino in Glendale, the recently announced Portillo’s in Avondale, and WESTMARC’s 2018 Restaurant Demo Day, the latter of which allowed various West Valley cities to pitch their locales to potentially interested restaurateurs, brokers, investors and land owners.

Hoffman dedicated much of her time on stage to acknowledging the West Valley’s growth and success, and the impact the region has on the rest of the Valley.

“Maricopa County is the fourth largest county in the nation, and over the next 25 years, 49.5 percent of the growth in this county will occur right here in the West Valley,” Hoffman said. “Working with you all for the past several years, I know that we are going to take on that growth – we’re ready to manage that, we’re ready to take that challenge.”

Hoarding therapy groups for age 60-plus begin in February

Maricopa County residents age 60 and older challenged by compulsive object hoarding who are willing to selfidentify and commit to addressing the disorder can now register for the Area Agency on Aging’s 14-week Too Many Treasures Hoarding Therapy Group, the only object hoarding therapy program in Maricopa County. .

The free, confidential and voluntary therapy sessions begin in February.

The groups will meet at locations in Central Phoenix and Glendale. Space is limited and qualifying participants will need to complete an intake process by calling 602-241-5577 no later than January 31.

Meeting locations are confidential.

Addresses will be provided to qualifying participants.

Individuals accepted into the program must be willing to attend the

90-minute weekly sessions, engage in group activities and complete home assignments.

The sessions, which are moderated by a Licensed Professional Counselor, are comprised of three phases: • Understanding the causes of hoarding disorder, techniques to identify obstacles and tools to help decluttering or acquiring.

• Discovering new ways to change unhelpful behavior.

• Techniques to help avoid recurrences and to maintain progress.

Bi-weekly follow-up support-group meetings for graduates will be scheduled to provide ongoing support and encouragement.

In 2019, the credit union is offering $5,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors. These five $1,000 awards will allow local high school graduates to offset the cost of studying at a four-year college, community college or trade school.

With a special focus, two of these $1,000 scholarships are reserved for students who participated in their school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC). The remaining three awards are open to all local graduates who meet the scholarship requirements.

According to statistics, 5 percent of the world’s population displays some sort of clinical hoarding that affects between 700,000 and 1 million people in the United States.

Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine indicates that the compulsion to hoard often starts in childhood or the teen years but doesn’t become severe until adulthood. Hoarding often runs in families.

According to www.psychologydegree.net, 75 percent of those who hoard engage in excessive buying, 50 percent excessively acquire free items, 15 percent acknowledge that their behavior is irrational and 50 percent of hoarders grew up with a hoarding family member.

American Legion Auxiliary honors local youth heroes

Peoria residents, Adyson and Rayne Ordway, were each presented Youth Hero awards from the American Legion Auxiliary at a joint Legion family session at Post 62, 9847 W. Desert Cove Ave. Presenting the awards was Sun City resident and John J. Morris American Legion Auxiliary President Doris Theiss.

Together, Adyson, 12, and Rayne, 7, prevented a potential multi-car accident and made sure their grandfather, Lee Mullins, got help when he became incoherent while driving.

On November 14, the three were driving from their grandfather’s house to the girls’ home, when their grandfather started acting odd. He was driving back and forth in and out of his lane, then began not making sense. By the time the girls miraculously convinced him to pull off the road, he did not know who they were. Adyson called 911.

When Peoria’s engine 196 arrived, their grandfather was unresponsive.

The car was stopped in the middle of the road— still running and in “drive.”

Their grandfather was suffering from a diabetic episode and Adyson, aware of his illness, alerted the paramedics about his condition so they were able to help him quickly.

Both girls were also recognized by the Peoria Fire Department for their actions, which may have saved their grandfather, themselves and others had they not acted quickly and decisively. Their father, Rick Ordway, Army veteran and elementary school teacher at Sun Valley Elementary School, 8361 N. 95th Ave. in Peoria, said they were scared, but brave.

“American Legion Auxiliary Youth Hero awards recognize young girls and boys who serve as inspirational role models for the organization and the community,” Unit 62 President Theiss said.

“We tell their stories to inspire others.”

The American Legion Auxiliary also recognizes youth who donate time and/or money for a worthy cause through Good Deed awards. Each girl received a medal and certificate at the presentation.

‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ begins 2019 Theater Works season

TheaterWorks offers a night of musical comedy to start out the MasterWorks Series in 2019. “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is on stage in the Gyder Theater Friday, February 15 through Sunday, March 3 at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.

The musical’s original 1962 Broadway run won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Author (Musical). “A Funny Thing” has enjoyed several Broadway and West End revivals and was made into a successful film starring the original lead

of the stage musical, Zero Mostel. A revival opened on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 4, 1972 and closed on August 12, 1972 after 156 performances. It has enjoyed success in hundreds of productions in community theaters around the country throughout the past 56 years.

Pseudolus, a Roman slave, must unite his young master, Hero, with the girl next door in order to win his freedom. A seemingly easy feat turns difficult though when they learn that she has been sold to another. Join us in ancient Rome to witness the chaos that ensues in this quest for freedom and love.

It may seem like a frivolous accessory to most people, but to someone who has had to live with clumps of mascara coating their eyelashes and smearing across their eyelids and melting under their eyes, it is a comforting alternative.

Dinosaurs will come to life as they battle for a championship belt when Jurassic Fight Night takes over Gila River Arena February 17 in an event designed to entertain the entire family.

Adam Kariotoglou, founder and creator of Pangea: Land of the Dinosaurs at OdySea in the Desert in Scottsdale, wants all families to enjoy a night of entertainment and excitement.

“It is fun entertainment and we have created a show that has all the entertainment of World Wrestling Entertainment with all the fun of dinosaurs,” Kariotoglou said. “It is so real the kids believe we made dinosaurs come alive to challenge each other and they believe it is real.”

Jurassic Fight Night is a complete production featuring dinosaurs in a boxing style ring, fighting to determine who the fiercest creature of the prehistoric era is.

History of Jurassic Fight Night On February 17, the event will be the third Jurassic Fight Night in just over a year and the first inside an arena and Kariotoglou said it started with a humble idea.

“When I built the dinosaur exhibit, it was really to help drive traffic to my restaurant, Opa Greek Life Grill (at OdySea),” he said. “I then decided to rebrand the restaurant to Pangea Dinosaur Grill by putting some moving dinosaurs and changed the signs — and business increased by four times.”

After the quick success, Kariotoglou said he had an idea and called his public relations team together to tell them his newest production.

“I saw kids’ and families’ reactions at the exhibit and restaurant when I got the idea for Jurassic Fight Night,” he said. “When I called my PR team and told them my idea of dinosaurs fighting like the WWE, they looked at me like I was crazy.”

He decided to hold the first Jurassic Fight Night in May 2018 outside of his restaurant in the center of OdySea where he could come up with a show for kids that would keep them entertained.

“I had to create a show that was great for kids as well as families,” Kariotoglou said. “I wanted the entertainment factors such as pyro, light show, and lasers along with three dinosaur battles inside the ring.”

That first show attracted nearly 2,000 people who were entertained for an hour and a half and Kariotoglou said the kids and parents spent the entire show on their feet.

He said, “After, kids would come up to me and were so excited and they told me that had so much fun and already were asking when the next show would be.”

He added that the first show, he lost approximately $60,000, but said it didn’t matter to him because of the reaction he saw.

“Why did I even think about a second show with that much of a loss, because I saw the audience reaction of those kids and families telling me how amazing it was,” Kariotoglou said.

“The second show, I spent more, and lost more money, but trust me, it was all worth it because of the families’

He planned the second show for September 2018, also held at OdySea, but planned for a bigger show. Kariotoglou, who owns Opa Greek Life Café at Westgate, had a meeting with representatives of AEG, who run Gila River Arena.

“I had the meeting set up with AEG and told them about the first show and sent them videos of the event,” Kariotoglou said. “They decided to send representatives to watch the second show and see for themselves.”

After the huge reaction of the first show, Kariotoglou decided to go bigger for the second show as they set up seats for 4,000 guests, and on the afternoon of the show the response was overwhelming.

“We had lines to get tickets that were five hours long and parking issues and because of that, the show was actually

Kariotoglou added that they are also in discussions for cartoons, comic books, toys, clothing line, games for phones as well as a women’s division to add to future programming.

“I am in discussion with multi-billion dollar companies on the future of this production to make it even bigger and better,” Kariotoglou said.

Kariotoglou said he has already been in discussions with numerous people to take Jurassic Fight Night on a national tour of arenas, as well as numerous celebrities and athletes who are interested.

He also added that Velasquez then met with him the following day and presented a video showing his excitement for the event and being involved with the event as it goes global.

“It is crazy how popular this has gotten so quickly. It is one thing when you hear Jurassic Fight Night, but it is more when you see the production of it,” Kariotoglou said. “We are already planning on six shows in Mexico City with Velasquez helping us do two shows a day and we are expecting to

attract over 100,000 people for those shows later in the year.”

He added that he has a number of national brands that are part of the show, including Dave and Busters and Cricket Wireless, with plans on a national tour of 50 to 70 arenas around the country in the future, especially if the Gila River Arena show is what he is planning.

“I recommend it to the teens for the families to take advantage of it,” Kariotoglou said. “As a recommendation, get your tickets now for the biggest and best kids show in the state of Arizona; guaranteed there is none better.”

The black robe: Wear it with dignity and fairness I was teaching a group of hearing officers the other day and a question about wearing a black robe came up.

It reminded me of a column I wrote 10-plus years ago. With a few updates, here is that column.

Someone asked me why I was not wearing a black robe in the courtroom.

I said, “Do you think a black robe makes me any smarter?”

He did not answer.

I asked him, “Do you know where the custom of judges wearing black robes comes from?”

He said, “No.” I said, “The English judges wore black robes and white wigs. Our forefathers decided to go only with the black robe and no wigs, thank goodness. Can you imagine wearing a white wool or horse hair wig in the summer time here in Arizona? Have you heard the saying, ‘Pulling the wool over their eyes?’ That term comes from England, and it refers to pulling a white wool wig over the judge’s eyes; in other words, trying to

When I took the bench 26 years ago, the late Supreme Court Appeals Court Judge Bill Eubanks a long-time Glendale resident, was a Supreme Court Appeals Judge and a very good friend.

He gave me a little four-inch gavel and Bill this advice.

He said, “If you need a big gavel, a high bench and a black robe to maintain order in your courtroom, quit.”

I never forgot that advice. Some years later, when I knew Bill was near death, I went to see him and gave him back the little four-inch gavel he had given me. I asked him if he remembered the advice he gave me. He was very weak but gave me a smile and just nodded.

I want people to be at ease and tell me their side of an issue. Fear the law but not the judge. I have always believed that people will respect you if you listen carefully, consider all the facts, and give a fair ruling. They might disagree with your findings but they will respect you.

My wife, Shirley, and I were at a wedding for a friend in south Phoenix and she had left something in the car. I went to retrieve it from our car. It was dark and a group of young men were in the parking lot.

As I walked past the group, one of

the young men said, “That’s Judge Tolby.”

I turned to face him and he asked, “Don’t you remember me?”

I admitted I did not remember him.

He said, “You put me in jail.”

I was very fearful; at my age, I could not out run him, there was no help in sight. I have to admit I was afraid.

Then he said to his friends, “Hey, man, this dude is cool. He did what he had to do. He treated me with respect and he was fair.”

Lesson: Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated.

Food drive to impact hunger among military/veteran families kicks off

Program Director Doctorate of Occupational Therapy – Peoria, Arizona Program Huntington University seeks qualified candidates to be the inaugural Program Director and Department Chair for the Doctorate of Occupational Therapy Program at the Peoria, Arizona location. The successful candidate will lead the development of a new doctor of occupational therapy program in a university that enjoys a fine reputation. The program will be housed in a spacious, 30,000-square-foot facility in Peoria, Arizona which also houses bachelor's degree programs in digital media arts.

The recently-renovated three-story structure, along with ample free parking, is located in the West Valley just off the 101 at Bell Road.

The Program Director will help create a first class learning environment that results in graduates’ successful practice. The OTD program in Peoria, Arizona will complement Huntington University’s high-quality undergraduate nursing, pre-med and occupational therapy assistant programs in Huntington, Indiana, and a graduate OTD program in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Candidates must have a strong personal Christian commitment within evangelical Protestantism, an understanding of the relationship of faith and professional practice, a commitment to stewardship of university resources, and a strong desire to serve others. Occupational Therapy licensure (or eligibility for licensure in Arizona) with a post-professional degree (PhD, EdD, OTD) from a regionally accredited program and evidence of clinical practice and research activities in professional health care organizations are required. Applicants must have demonstrated successful academic appointment (minimum of 3 years) and clinical experience (minimum of 8 years) with expertise, scholarship, and administrative experience. The candidate must have successful teaching and curriculum development experience in higher education and must also have a commitment to developing and maintaining an Occupational Therapy curriculum based on the mission of the University that exemplifies Christian ethics, compassion and service. The ideal candidate should also have strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal/written communication, and the ability to operate as part of a dynamic, driven team with high standards for academic excellence.

Key areas of responsibility include recruiting and hiring faculty; shaping the OTD program philosophy, objectives and goals, curriculum plan, course offerings and other materials; developing program policies and procedures; leading the program’s accreditation process through ACOTE; leading the ongoing development of the department; and working with University administration to develop the OTD facilities at the Peoria, Arizona location.
