ASU students convert food trucks into mobile libraries Jorge Salazar • College Times You would think the food truck industry had it all covered by now. From waffles to ramen, it was nearly impossible to find a cuisine that had yet to make it on wheels.

That is until three ASU students managed to find an item missing from the menus on Phoenix area food trucks: Brain food.

For Alex Miller, Elijah Allan and Jasmine Clarke-Telfer, brain food means a mobile library filled with books, computers and e-readers. “BiblioTrucka” bloomed when they were partnered with NFL Youth Education Town (YET) Academy, a charter school in south Phoenix, and discovered that it did not have a library.

“We got to thinking ‘If this is a problem at our school, is this a problem at other schools too?’” says ClarkeTelfer. “That’s when we called around to other charter schools in south Phoenix and found that 44 percent of them are operating without library resources.”

The group found that Houston, a city comparable to Phoenix in size and population, has 41 public library branches while Phoenix only has 13.

Because it is a mobile service, the

group believes it could be shared between schools and at local food truck events where anybody could check out content customized to their cultural background.

“We want it to be a resource for kids who are growing up in Latino neighborhoods or Navajo reservations,” says Miller. “We want them to see and say ‘There are leaders out there that look just like me and come from the same families I do who are doing incredible things.’”

The idea hits close to home for Allan, who hails from a Navajo reservation. He says none of his classes pertained to his cultural background and rarely carried books by Native American authors.

“It’s a good way for us to revitalize our languages and also strengthen our communities and have a better future for our youth,” he says.

While the e-readers and computers will serve as cost effective alternatives for providing thousands of books for a wide range of ages, their educational value extends past literacy.

“A lot of standardized testing is going to be online,” says Clarke-Telfer. “So kids need to be familiar with that technology in order to excel on their tests. We’re

hoping we can be that resource for them to practice their skills on.”

The project is the culmination of their work in the Changemaking in Education course this past semester.

Run by ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and Teach for America, the course challenges students with creating solutions for education issues and has them apply for an ASU Innovation Challenge grant of up to $10,000 to put their ideas into practice.

BiblioTrucka has also applied for funding for the Clinton Global Initiative University, which is coming to ASU in March. They hope to partner with groups like Phoenix Public Libraries, local charter schools and Scholastic, Inc. to bring BiblioTrucka to life.

Clarke-Telfer believes it is crucial for ASU to provide these kinds of courses.

A business and urban policy major, she enjoyed being able to explore her passion for education.

“I’m where I need to be,” she says.

“It took my passion for education and my passion for entrepreneurship and just married the two. It was the perfect recipe for the success that we’re seeing in BiblioTrucka right now.”

There is no way around it. Picking a college or university is one of the hardest and most important decisions in a person’s life.

It’s pretty frightening to have to wade through all the information and overwhelming sense of change, but it’s still pretty exciting. But what if you couldn’t actually visit the school before making your final decision?

Abi Mandelbaum, Endri Tolka and Taher Baderkhan were all international students that studied in the United States. In 2009 they started a company that created YouVisit.com, the place to go for college and university tours online.

“From our research, what we found is that 83 percent of students only visit zero to four campuses physically during their college search. But in reality they consider many more schools than that,” says CEO and co-founder Mandelbaum.

YouVisit has more built more than 600 tours for colleges and universities throughout the US. They partner with schools to understand their physical walking tour and try to make their virtual one as similar as possible.

Their tours include fantastic photographs, important facts like tuition costs, and some schools have interactive “walking” tours, where a real student takes you through the campus and gives insight on what it’s like to attend.

YouVisit is perfect for families that either don’t have the time or money to visit campuses. Mandelbaum says the tours help students and parents feel more comfortable making the decision because they get a much better feel of what it’s like to live and study on the campus.

The amount of information readily available on YouVisit can even help a student who is already attending their dream school. The site can be perfect for a new student who is still trying to find their way around.

“Our goal is to be able to create virtual walking tours for every single college and university, not only in the US, but throughout the world,” Mandelbaum says.

Extracurricular Peculiarities

Creepin’ on the quirkiest clubs at local colleges Knights of Cantlerlot, ASU’s ‘Brony’ Club Jorge Salazar • College Times It was impossible to grow up without spotting them in toy aisles. With their pastel bodies and glittery manes, My Little Pony was the girliest thing next to Barbie.

After waning in popularity in the late nineties, My Little Pony popped back full force at the tail end of 2010 and brought with it a new cultural movement: the Brony. Bronies are male fans (females are known as Pegasisters) between the ages of 18-35 who are drawn to the show’s humor, animation and nostalgic appeal. Brony fandom has grown from internet memes and fan art to full-blown conventions worldwide. Joshua Hjul-Nielsen and Daniel Inocencio, president and treasurer respectively of The Knights of Canterlot, ASU’s very own Brony club, are here to tell you why they love the show so much and why you should too.

College Times: What’s the appeal of “My Little Pony?”

Hjul-Nielsen: It really depends on the person. Some people like the animation, some people like the humor in the show.

Others like the character development, and some people like all of those things put together.

Inocencio: It appeals to me because I’ve always been a fan of animated shows.

It’s quality television. There are very few shows on for children these days that meet that high level of storytelling, character development and animation. It harkens back to earlier days because it’s very reminiscent of shows from our childhood, like “Powerpuff Girls.”

What on campus activities is the club involved in?

Hjul-Nielsen: One of the big activities we’re working on for this coming semester is Sun Devil Fan Fair, a collaborative program with Dumbledore’s Army. It’s a convention at ASU, where we have panels and activities, like trading card and video game competitions.

Inocencio: There will be a vendor hall where people can go and show their merchandise off.

Hjul-Nielsen: In addition to that we’ll hold regular meetings where we do activities members can participate, like socials.

Outside of ASU, does the club participate or travel to Brony conventions?

Inocencio: Since we’re such a small club we don’t really have the resources to do something like that at the moment. There were plans to have something here at one point, but that fell through. It takes a lot of money to get out to a convention like that.

Hjul-Nielsen: We could in theory have a group go out to Phoenix Comicon.

The organization is described as a safe haven. Have you guys gotten negative reactions to the club?

Inocencio: The fandom in general tends to receive a lot of negative reactions because it tends to challenge gender notions. Since the fandom is predominately male and the show is designed for little girls, there tends to be backlash against it.

We hope to provide a place where people can enjoy ponies and not have to care about being judged about who they are.

Whole Wheat Chocolate Pancakes

Jorge Salazar • College Times As the semester revs into full drive and assignments start to pile up, nobody is going to blame you for whining about wanting your mommy. All right, you probably won’t be that vocal about it, but deep down inside everybody longs for a warm home cooked meal. By now January should be named National Eating Healthy Month, as we fight to keep the common New Year’s resolution with February (BOXES OF CHOCOLATE!) rolling around the corner. To help you stay on the straight and narrow, we put together a few simple recipes that will fill your heart, not your calorie limits.

Saturday mornings as a kid meant breakfast was ready just in time to watch your favorite cartoons. Now that you’re a full-time student, pancakes are no longer reserved for the AM. Grab a bowl and mix two cups of whole wheat flour with five teaspoons of baking powder, two of cinnamon, three of vanilla extract and one of salt. In the same bowl, add two eggs and three cups of skim milk. I suggest you add the chocolate morsels liberally. Then, use a fork to beat your ingredients into submission until you get a nice, thick batter and pour your concoction into a skillet on low heat. Flip on each side. Once your goo looks nice and fluffy, serve on a plate with a cold glass of milk.

Hamburgers may remind many you of family weekends spent outside barbequing. I suggest adding a little southwest flavor (come on, you’re in Arizona) to the memory without settling for a greasy late night drive-thru. First, mix half a pound of ground beef with one can of chipotle peppers and a pinch of garlic salt. Roll the meat into two tennis-sized balls and flatten them into patties.

Then, cook the meat in a skillet at medium heat until nice and charred. Toast the bread on a flat pan and place spring mix on both halves. Once the meat is cooked to your liking, place the patties on the bread and enjoy your Mexican style burger. The mix of the beef with the chipotle pepper is juicy enough that you won’t mind skipping any additional condiments, like mayo.

We’ll admit it: we just wanted an excuse for a bad pun. Microwaveable macaroni and cheese has become the staple of broke and lazy college students everywhere.

This recipe lets you liven up the plate while still keeping it simple. Start by boiling water in a large pot and cooking the macaroni until soft. As you wait on the pasta, melt half a stick of unsalted butter and mix with three cups of skim milk, two of whole-wheat flour and a tablespoon of salt. Keep the mix at medium heat until the milk starts to sizzle and set aside. Once the macaroni is done boiling, drain the water and mix in milk and the bag of Mexican cheeses into the same pasta pot on high heat. Once the cheese has melted fully, turn the stove off and let it cool. Cut up a red and green bell pepper and sprinkle on top to make it a festive experience.

Reporting and writing stories that entertain the college and 18-35 crowd isn’t a task we take lightly, but it’s easy for us to overlook just how easy it is to be heard when you’re working for a publication like ours.

We realize that, for the average person, it’s just not that easy. That’s why we’re seeking columnists, cartoonists and reader input in our upcoming “College Voices” section. We want to hear from you!

Whether your Philosophy 101 class turned on something existential in your ever-expanding mind or you’re ready to

take your notebook doodles to the next level, we’re offering a platform for you.

Columnists interested in being printed should be able to write one 400-500 word column every other week (for each biweekly issue), be able to make deadlines without fuss, not be afraid to be gutsy, be able to incorporate humor into the heavy stuff and be between the ages of 18 and 35. Columnists must have a distinct voice and be open to criticism. No doubt our readers will have some feedback for you.

Cartoonists must be able to produce a comic strip or editorial cartoon in each biweekly issue, adhere to deadlines and be open to constructive criticism from editors and regular ‘ole surly criticism from readers. We’re looking for someone with some serious wit. Full-time artists and simple sketches will both be considered.

Options for higher education in the Valley just got a lot more exciting. Benedictine University, which is a private Catholic university based in Chicago, opened their newest campus in Mesa late last year. The Mesa campus continues the Benedictine legacy that started back in 1887, but they are looking well into the future as they become a part of the community.

“Benedictine University at Mesa provides a private, values-based education grounded in history, heritage and Catholic tradition,” says Benedictine University spokesperson Elliott Pepper.

“The Mesa branch campus harnesses Benedictine’s more than 125-year history of academic excellence distinguished and guided by Roman Catholic tradition and Benedictine heritage to offer liberal arts and professional education programs,” he says.

Benedictine University, or BenU, is the only standalone four-year Catholic university in the state of Arizona, making it particularly tempting to students who wish to have their faith be a part of their education. But what does it mean to entwine faith a university education?

According to Benedictine University President William J. Carroll, they are one in the same. One local business wants to make sure you get to where you need to go in style, with minimal effort on your part and plenty of cash left in your wallet.

Limo Bull started with Mitch Erschen and his best friend, Dr. Joe Brown, who specializes in neuropathic cancer treatments. Brown had patients coming from all parts of the US and even from out of the country, so he wanted to find an affordable way to get his clients to his office.

After not finding a suitable solution, Limo Bull was created as a way to help patients.

Now the business serves anyone looking for a spectacular outing.

Owner Kelly Shanahan says Limo Bull has the best rates in Maricopa County because they are keenly aware of how other businesses upsell their clients.

“Everyone else is kind of running a scam,” she says. “They will have their set price, say $45, then you have to pay $45 for gas, then 20 percent gratuity, and then the tax, and they expect you to tip on top of that as well. We just offer one set price.

If you want tip us, that’s great. It’s the best compliment we could ever get.”

Limos are usually associated with weddings and proms, but Shanahan says they do it all from pub crawls and casino trips to bachelor parties and romantic dates. “You name it, we can do it all,” she says.

There are several vehicles to choose from depending on the client’s preference. Limo Bull has limos with light up floors, hard

wood floors, TVs and bars. They also have a 2006 Hummer H2 limo for those who want to go all out.

Most packages they offer include alcohol such as a variety of beers or champagne, but customers can always ask for a dry run if sipping alcohol in the back of a limo doesn’t work for them. The limos also come with beads and other fun props for the ride.

Limo Bull is having a Valentine’s Day special where three hours, a bottle of champagne, a box of chocolate and a rose all come down to $325 plus tax. Shanahan says there are no add-ons that other companies might use because it is unfair to the customer.

Military personal are also very close to both Shanahan and Erschen, who are veterans themselves (Air Force and Army respectively), so they always do their best to help out a fellow solider. Beyond giving them discounts, they work closely with the Chandler Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Shanahan says they just want to give back to the community as much as they can, and adds that two out of their four business partners are military. Shanahan says they are up front about their prices, but that they will work with a client if needed.

“Some kid came home from Afghanistan and wanted to party it up at American Legion Post 91 and his mom only had 200 bucks to pick him up from the airport and take him there, so we definitely worked with her on that one,” she says.

We can only assume that someone with a job that doesn’t start until the sun goes down in a dark comedy club would shy away from early morning phone calls, but Wayans wanted to chat at 8:30 a.m. sharp. Fighting sleepiness and wrestling with plastic for what we can only assume was toast, Wayans chatted with College Times about his sheer delight in Dennis Rodman and his upcoming shows with his brother Marlon at Stand Up Live.

College Times: Hey, Shawn. What’s shakin’?

Wayans: What’s shakin’ is my head because it’s a little too early for me right now. I just woke up.

It’s been a while since you’ve been in Phoenix.

Yeah, it’s been about four days. I was there four days ago. I’m just kidding.

It’s been about two years. I’m looking forward to coming back. Phoenix has great comedic audiences. They always come out and show love. It’s a college town, so it’s cool. Good energy.

Most of our readers are collegeaged. What were you like in your early 20’s?

What was I like in college? I never went. I was just like them. I didn’t go to school either. I was wild. I was wild but I was focused. When you’re in your 20’s you’re lucky that if you can have focus in there with the word wild, you’re batting freaking 100. I was doing stand-up, I was working on “The Wayans Bros.,” I was writing a movie. I was really, really hard working. I don’t know what they do in college. I had the opportunity to have my own show.

Where are some of the weirder places you and Marlon have performed?

We’ve been a lot of places. We are going to South Africa this year and we went to Dubai last year. That was great, but it was a challenge because neither one of us was able to curse or use any profanity.

For a black comedian, I had an hour, but when I was in Dubai I only had seven minutes. I’m kidding, we had a good time.

Who makes you laugh?

Do you mean who makes me laugh because they’re jackasses or who makes me laugh because they’re funny? Well, right now, Dennis Rodman is my favorite comedian. This fucking guy. He is going to get himself killed. I don’t know who is going to kill him first, them or us. [laughs] If you could send anyone from the US to represent us in North Korea, who would you send?

I like Dennis Rodman. I wouldn’t replace him. He is the most irritating thing on television. If I could clone him I would send another one. I would send a whole team of Dennis Rodmans over there.

Why do you think Kim Jong-Un likes him so much?

Because he’s Dennis Rodman. It goes perfect with North Korea. Oh my god.

Colin Quinn Interprets the Constitution in One-Man Show Jorge Salazar • College Times

Brooklyn native Colin Quinn got his start in the stand-up scene back in the ‘80s before making his first mark on MTV’s “Remote Control.” You might remember him best from his five-year stint on “Saturday Night Live” in the ‘90s as the host of Weekend Update. Since leaving the show in 2000, Quinn’s headlined his own shows while staying active in the stand-up scene.

In is one-man show, “Unconstitutional,” Quinn takes on over two hundred years of American history in a little over an hour, starting with our bewigged founding fathers and including everything from drones to the Kardashians. Quinn took some time out of his schedule to talk to College Times about the show, which hits the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 25.

You mention current celebrities in your act. How does celebrity culture fit into the Constitution?

It fits into the show in the sense that celebrities are the most naked example of the American Dream there is, since they take whatever is offered. The American Dream is to be a celebrity because you can be rich and still talk about how you’re not into money. You delude yourself into thinking that you don’t believe in it. It lets you live this decadent lifestyle and still pretend you’re not part of it.

College Times: Tell us, what is Unconstitutional?

Quinn: It’s the story of how the American personality was formed by the Constitution.

How did you come up with the idea for the show?

I was thinking about how everybody talks about the Constitution and how everybody seems to respect it. It’s only four pages long, so it’s not that hard of a read. When I started reading more about it, it all made sense. To me, this country is all about everybody trying to get theirs, and that is part of the Constitution. Basically what it says is that everybody has to get his or her own version of the American Dream. It doesn’t say how to make that happen, but that’s the mindset that it pushes.

What can people expect to see at the show?

I mostly talk about today, about personalities and how that came about because of

You talk about gun laws quite a bit in your show. It’s a pretty passionate topic here in Arizona. How do you bring an issue like that up in your show?

There are always two sides to everything, to every story. I talk about both sides in the show. I joke about how hunting people can’t say deer hunting is a sport to me.

There’s nothing sporty about it when the other team isn’t playing.

When I live in a city, I don’t have a gun. I can’t have one. But if I lived out in the country, I would have five guns, because I don’t want to end up like that guy stuck with Cathy Bates in that movie where she plays a crazy lady.

Who should come see your show?

Anybody who is interested in a fake education should come. You know that you’re not going to read the Constitution. So come to the show and learn about it.

SCC’s TechTalks Bring the Knowledge Ana Anguiano • College Times The second annual Scottsdale Community College TechTalks is almost here, so prepare to have your mind blown. Just as the title suggests, technology geeks and those wishing to learn more about what’s new in the tech world are welcome to attend and hear from staff, students and faculty of the Maricopa Community Colleges network.

TechTalks is presented in the incredibly popular, sometimes viral, but mostly personable format of the acclaimed TED Talks. This year, there will be ten, 18-minute presentations on technology with the topics ranging from DJs to NASA, but all with a personal twist. Technology is an unstoppable force that only ever pushes forward, and these talks give insight into how they affect us on a larger scale.

The 2013 SCC TechTalks won the Innovation of the Year Award last year and was a huge hit. This year, they are more invigorated than ever to bring TechTalks back and share new and interesting speakers that can share their teaching/ learning process.

Lisa Young is SCC faculty, the MC for the event, and a presenter herself. She says the event starts and ends with students and that last year’s event was both touching and entertaining. Young mentioned that Dave Zamora’s topic on “The emergence and uses of 3D printing” was especially amazing, as Zamora showed the audience how 3D scanning and printing technology helped a young disabled girl finally have the proper braces she needed to move her arms for the first time.

While the speakers brought laughter and tears, Young says, they also had plenty of really great, concise information on topics the audience was rarely familiar with.

Young’s topic this year is formally titled

“Engage Me: Students’ Relationships with Technology,” where she will be talking about “tech tools” faculty and staff can use to engage with students.

Sian Proctor, a South Mountain Community College faculty member will present his topic “The NASA Mars Project.”

Young says his topic is fascinating and covers his sabbatical at NASA. Proctor spent four months living in a Mars simulated environment studying various food related experiments related to travel and preparation. He also will chat about the experiences of being isolated during that NASA study.

Blake Smith (aka “DJ Ascension”) is an SCC student who will present his topic, “Technology in the DJ Profession.” Smith knows his way around a turntable and as a professional DJ, it will be interesting to see just how he manipulates sounds and beats to create music that is almost entirely digital.

Luckily, the interaction and discussions don’t stop after the event. Those who attend the event can also participate in a $10 lunch where they can chat, network and mingle with the presenters to get to know more about them or their subject.

For those who are intrigued but cannot attend the event, you are in luck. It will be streamed live online and will be posted on the Scottsdale Community College YouTube page afterwards, where you can also find all of last year’s presenters. But if you do plan on attending, make sure to register online as seats are limited.

You might even know one personally.

Wine snobs: they give wine that exclusive kind of reputation that pushes people toward craft beer and other liquors.

But having a basic understanding of wine can be quite helpful. The thing is, unless you are a sommelier or work with wine in some sense, the authenticity of someone’s wine knowledge immediately feels questionable. That doesn’t mean you can’t fake it, though.

Much like faking anything, it all comes down to confidence. Acting like you know what you’re talking about goes a long way in a social setting. You don’t want to show up to an event and ask for their sweetest red. Heaven forbid an actual wine snob overhears you! They will clutch their pearls and start ranting about how the movie “Sideways” has ruined their lives.

Listen, it is not as easy as it seems.

The wine-o demographic is a tough one crack. You might look like a fool and people might see right through you, but you can probably fake it ‘til you make it.

What to do

• If you bring a bottle to a get together, ask the host if they have a particular favorite and then hit up a store with a knowledgeable staffer who can give you enough information to back up what you’re bringing to the party.

• Be really nonchalant about swirling, sniffing and sipping. Look up how to do it online and then execute it as if you are doing the wine a favor.

• Make sure to get your wine buzz words right. Call something tannic, fruity, spicy, earthy or acidic, but know what it all means. A chardonnay can be crisp, light and fruity while a pinot noir can be fullbodied, robust and complex.

• Have a favorite region or style, but refuse to pick just one wine as your favorite.

By the same token, have a nemesis wine.

Hate on a brand as well. We suggest hating on Beringer. Why? Who cares. Screw them.

• If you are at a restaurant, either ask the server for a recommendation or order without too much chit chat. Anyone who knows what they want will get what they want without having to draw it out.

• If you are feeling stumped, change the subject. Read a couple quick trendy wine articles and move the conversation

to a related topic. For instance, you can always transition out of wine and into a conversation about the subjective nature of one’s palate. Smell is very important to taste, but two people could experience the same wine differently based on what they have smelled and what memories they have attached to those smells. Also, throw in the word “olfaction” for bonus snob points.

What not to do

•Don’t talk too much. If you go on and on about your preferences and what you like or don’t like, people will get bored. And if anyone who actually does know a thing or two about wine gets annoyed, they will speak up and blow your cover.

• Don’t be a jerk. Remember that drinking wine is not a chore and a bottle is meant to be shared in good spirits, so drop the attitude.

•Don’t have a definite opinion on any wine until you have tried it.

• Don’t call out specific fruit notes unless you are positive you recognize them.

Be vague if you’re not sure what to say.

• Don’t hold your wine glass by the bowl. Hold it by the stem or the base.

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times Known for his retro-soul style, Ann Arbor, Michigan, native Mayer Hawthorne threw all of his self-imposed rules out the window to generate the sound found on his latest collection Where Does This Door Go, which explores a variety of genres ranging from pop to metal.

“It’s very different—intentionally,” Hawthorne says, “I can’t just do the same thing over and over again. I couldn’t even do it if I wanted to.”

To find this new sound for the first time, Hawthorne recruited an all-star cast of producers—Cee Lo collaborator Jack Splash, Oak of the R&B production superteam Pop and Oak, Greg Wells and, most notably, hitcranker Pharrell Williams.

During the recording and writing of Where Does This Door Go, Hawthorne was able to hone his storytelling skills thanks to Williams, who recently released the single “Happy.”

“I think my storytelling really went up, like, three notches and part of that was working with Pharrell Williams,” he says. “He advised me to really work on the details. The minor details, that’s really where the story is.

It was super fun.”

He penned songs whenever he was inspired.

“Every song was different,” he says. “It was really just about being in the moment and telling the story. I wrote every single way you can possibly think of: I wrote in the studio; I wrote in the shower; I wrote in 15 minutes; I wrote in 15 days. The formula was not having a formula. It was very liberating.”

Hawthorne can now call himself a Grammy nominee, as he recently received a nod for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for his How Do You Do 7-inch.

“It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers, for sure,” he says. “It was something

It’s a challenge, but one he’s up for. Just like when Vevo summoned Hawthorne to cover Lorde’s “Royals” for its “Unexpected Covers” series.

“It was definitely one of the biggest songs of the year,” he says. “They challenged me to cover a Top 40 hit. It’s something that while I definitely appreciate and listen to. I rarely ever cover something like that. It was a fun challenge.”

Vevo was one of the multimedia outlets he has used to promote his music. He performed during the Winter Classic hockey game between his hometown Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs in belowfreezing weather.

“Oh man, that was insane,” he says. “It was insanely fun but it was really freezing cold. I’m used to the cold. I grew up in Detroit, but man, it’s not easy trying to play guitar in 12 degrees with snow falling on you.”

He also dabbled in apps. Mayer teamed up with Air Playd to release his own Android and iOS app game that allows users to experience the sensation of DJing in front of a packed house to unlock songs. Players hype up the audience, while getting busy on the turntables. Points are accrued by “staying on beat” and tapping on sound effect bubbles floating around the room.

“We just wanted to do something fun that would just add to the experience of the album and make it more multifaceted,” he says. “We had a really amazing remix and we wanted an innovative way to get it out and that was it.”

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times After touring together nearly nonstop for three years, Young the Giant did what any other worn-out band would do: The musicians moved into a house and built a home studio.

“We lived in a house together and recorded these demos,” says guitarist Eric Cannata. “When the demos were done, we went looking for a producer and found Justin Meldal-Johnsen. We felt like he was a perfect fit. He’s a musician and works in so many different musical styles. He was a good fit for the album.”

The demos evolved into Young the Giant’s second album, Mind over Matter, the follow-up to its 2010 self-titled debut which spawned the single “Cough Syrup.”

Thanks to Meldal-Johnsen’s influence and the band’s newfound confidence, Young the Giant—which also includes singer Sameer Gadhia, guitarist Jacob Tilley, bassist Payam Doostzadeh and drummer Francois Comtois—explored musical avenues previously untraveled.

“The songs we wrote this time around were more fully thought out,” he says.

“With the first album, we weren’t as experienced doing a record in a big studio.

It was daunting for us.”

On their tour, which comes to the Comerica Theatre on Wednesday, February 12, Young the Giant is slowly incorporating new songs into the setlist, including “It’s About Time,” Mind over Matter’s lead single.

“We’ve been playing a lot of the new material live and implementing songs as we learn them and get better playing them,” he says. “This album is a lot more interesting live than the last album because it’s so new to us. We have a lot of energy and excitement and it rubs off on the audience.”

Besides the tour proper, also on the

docket for 2014 is a slew of festivals, gigs that Young the Giant particularly enjoy.

“The first one we ever did was Sasquatch in 2011 in Washington state,” he says.

“I think festivals are really great. There’s definitely a different energy. Depending on the slow we get, they’re some of the biggest crowds we’ve ever played to.“ Sometimes the band doesn’t get a “full soundcheck” and that’s equally as thrilling.

“You just throw yourself on the stage and go,” he says. ‘It’s definitely fun.”

Live performances may be the highlight of the day, but Young the Giant keeps busy when it’s not on stage.

“We try to exercise because we live on a bus,” he says. “We’re go on runs and work out in the hotel. Every once in a while we get a hotel room and use the gym there.

It’s definitely a good thing. We read, make music and we try to exercise.”

“I tend to read a lot about music,” Cannata says. “I read ‘How Music Works’

by David Byrne, the lead singer from the Talking Heads. It was really inspiring, really good. It was his take on everything from performing live to the music business to stage set up and performance in general. I was really inspired by his book.

“Another book I read was ‘Kafka on the Shore’ by a Japanese author Haruki Murakami. His books inspired everyone in the band. Sameer and Francois were inspired by his surrealist novels and it inspired some of the content on the album, for example, ‘Daydreamer,’ maybe subconsciously. Those books leaked in a little bit to the album.”

From Tormented Teen to Touring Dad, Max Bemis Comes Full Circle Ana Anguiano • College Times Max Bemis is best known as the lead singer of Say Anything, but he’s coming to town to perform solo and with his other band, Perma, which he fronts with his wife, Eisley’s Sherri DuPree-Bemis. They put out their debut album Two of a Crime last year.

Bemis has a busy schedule ahead of him that includes a video shoot for Perma, a tour, and mixing the newest Say Anything album, which he is producing himself. He chatted with College Times about taking his family on tour and fighting demons from his past.

College Times: What’s it like to finally take Perma on tour?

Bemis: Amazing. First of all it’s a joy to play the songs. It’s a whole new experience for me because I have never toured in anything else beyond Say Anything. Getting to play with someone else, let alone my wife, is refreshing on many levels. I’m not the only one singing and it’s a completely different kind of music, and it’s collaborative. So much of it comes from me and Sherri’s dynamic, so getting to have that be the inspiration behind everything instead of just what’s going on in my head is a big change.

You are now touring parents as well.

We are, yeah. Our baby comes on the road with us, Lucy. She is incredible. We are just lucky that she was born with this particular disposition because otherwise we’d be in a bad place. She generally just hangs out and plays and is okay with the long drives and the new surroundings all

the time and the people. Not every baby is like that and we definitely don’t take it for granted.

Your first album ...Is a Real Boy came out 10 years ago. Can you still relate to the person you were then?

Honestly, I think there is a core part of someone that doesn’t change. There are all these factors in your physiology and experiences in your soul, and obviously your physical form growing and learning.

In many ways, if I look at my life on a superficial level, it’s almost a complete 180. At the time of ...Is a Real Boy I was alone, angry, sad and depressed. I also hadn’t experienced all the things that I have now in terms of a professional life and a personal one. Now, I’m a father and I live in Texas instead of New York and LA, but I can still put myself back there and it’s not boring to me. I’m still really proud of that record and still connect to it a lot.

The funny thing about this new record is how close some of the subject matter is, but coming from a completely different place. This new record centers a lot around being a “grown up,” and you think you’ve settled into a happy ending and then those demons come back and haunt you. It does share a lot of DNA with that record in that sense. It’s funny how that works. It’s not something I would have guessed when I was young... that I’d still be writing about some of that stuff, or a variation of some of that stuff.

3 Doors Down is ready to strip All-acoustic tour makes its way to the Valley

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times When 3 Doors Down played an acoustic show in Nashville a year ago, the Mississippi-bred band earned rave reviews from fans and critics.

It wasn’t exactly the act’s first rodeo.

3 Doors Down has played numerous unplugged gigs at radio stations, and even released an acoustic EP in 2005.

But this show was a little different.

The band played the songs as they were originally written—without studio-created bells and whistles. The reception was so good that 3 Doors Down decided to form a tour around the idea.

“Myself and Brad (Arnold, lead singer) and the band in general are real active on Twitter,” says rhythm guitarist Chris Henderson. “We talked to a lot of people (from the Nashville show). The people who were at the show were like, ‘Oh my God. It’s great. You guys should do that more often.’ We decided to just load up and go. I wish bands that I loved growing up would have done this.”

That run comes to the Celebrity Theatre on Thursday, January 23.

“We’re playing the songs in their stripped-down original version, the way that we wrote them is the way that we’re playing them,” Henderson says.

“A lot of the songs are a little bit different. They’re still songs that people know. They’re just actually being performed the way they were performed

for the very first time—without the producer-added stuff.”

The setlist includes deep cuts, which has proven to be challenging for Henderson and the rest of 3 Doors Down.

“We’re playing a lot of things that people have never heard us play before,” he says. “Not only have we not played them, we haven’t played them the way they were written since the day they were written. Some of these things were written 15 to 20 years ago. We literally have to go back and relearn our own music and that can be challenging.”

He says he’s found himself second guessing the parts.

“You won’t really remember exactly how it was played,” says Henderson, who added that the hardest song to relearn was “Pages.” “So you have to go in and dig.”

The roaddog that it is, 3 Doors Down will be hitting stages for most of 2014, save for occasional breaks to work on a new record.

“It’s in its infancy stages,” says Henderson. “It’s a process for us. We have begun the process. We’re taking our time this time. There’s really no hurry. We’re going to get there when we get there.

We’re not going to try and force it out.”

For now he’s enjoying the acoustic tour.

“It’s so much fun,” he says. “It’s really fun.”

“My daughter’s school is a 15, 20 minute walk from our apartment,” Hamilton says. “Yesterday morning, I was walking with the wind on my back on the way there so it was bearable. I was walking back from school into the wind and my beard actually froze. I don’t even have much of a beard. It was stubble and it froze.”

Needless to say, Hamilton and his cohorts—singer/guitarist Tim Wheeler and drummer Rick McMurray—are looking forward to coming to Phoenix on Sunday, February 2.

“Besides enjoying the weather, we’ve had some fun parties there,” he says. “I remember hanging out with some people who were a good laugh. Hopefully they’ll turn up again.”

to road test material from an upcoming album that it is recording at its New York City studio. For the collection, Wheeler is binge writing; challenging himself to write 20 songs within 12 hours with different songwriters.

“It’s to throw ideas out and get the creative wheels turning,” Hamilton explains. “He’s doing this thing every week. You have all the bits and you can go right away, ‘This is good.’ ‘This is not good.’ Then you develop the ideas that you thought were the best.”

All of Wheeler’s ideas are presented to Ash, who “knocks them into our songs.”

“It’s a different approach to the songwriting thing,” Hamilton says.

The process is an undertaking, much like the A-Z Series, which consists of 26 singles released every two weeks between October 2009 and September 2010.

“For the A-Z singles series, we did a lot of experiments with synths and stuff and samples or just different sounds,” Hamilton says. “I think we’re going to go back to rock and guitar album. That’s our current thing. Things always change, so

you never know.”

Mixing things up—as well as the strong relationship between the men—has been the key to Ash’s 20-plus-year career.

“We were school friends—not even high school friends,” he says. “We were friends when we were 11 years old. It’s very hard to pull rock star attitude on each other whenever you’ve been friends that long. You’re like, ‘Whatever. I’ve known you since you were 11.’ We kind of think of ourselves as a second family. You don’t necessarily have to be best friends all the time. That’s not what brothers are like. Brothers get on each other’s nerves or whatever, but you’re always out for

each other.”

Even while the three were friends in school, Hamilton wanted to move abroad to the United States.

“I remember when I was in primary school—which is like elementary school here—I had to do a project on anything I wanted. Mine was about the U.S.A. I loved watching American TV shows. I thought, ‘I want to go there.’ I think the last page of my school project said ‘One day I will live in America.’”

‘Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver’ Jorge Salazar • College Times According to Wikipedia, a B movie is a low-budget film that is not an arthouse (aka hipster fodder) or porno flick.

For the purposes of this review, B stands for so “bad you will beat yourself up for wasting over an hour of your life that you will never get back. “ That, of course, applies if you make it past the first ten minutes.

As part of my first foray into Netflix’s catalog of B movies, I decided on a flick that incorporates three of my favorite things: roller-skating, baked goods and time travel.

“Gingerdead Man 3” (yes, there were two before it) has them in spades while adding some less-than-subtle allusions to “Silence of the Lambs,” “Porky’s” and “Carrie.”

The film stars William Butler pulling triple duty as writer, director and the titular evil cookie with a penchant for murder.

While locked up in the Scientific Research Institute for the Study of Homicidal Baked Goods, the Gingerdead Man receives a visit from FBI agent Clarissa Darling (Laura Kachergus). The scene spoofs the first meeting between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling from “Silence of the Lambs,” with Kachergus doing a hilariously spot on impression of Jodie Foster. Their meeting is cut short when animal rights activists break in, freeing Gingerdead and a slew of other murderous pastries (including a baguette and cream puff spouting double entendres that are best not repeated).

Giving Agent Darling and security the slip, the Gingerdead Man stumbles upon the institute’s time travel research room (just go with it), procures a gun out of thin air and escapes to 1976, but not after shooting all the scientists. Gingerdead ends up transported to a roller disco in danger of closing down, coming across stereotypical murder bait.

The film plays with all the major movie tropes: There is a star-crossed love story involving a roller rink worker and a shy wallflower, who is conveniently forbidden from putting on skates. Two burnouts embark on a psychedelic trip. The quintessential mean girl hatches a scheme to humiliate the new girl (with a falling bucket of pig blood included).

“Gingerdead Man 3” throws all of these themes into a blender and adds an extra dose of poorly computer-generated gore. The movie highlights its budget and cheesiness best (worst?) when rehashing the famous “Carrie” prom scene, quickly devolving it into a hilarious bloodbath that includes telekinesis, a shoot out and mass electrocution.

While a major bulk of the film is a SyFy Channel slasher at its most mediocre, the last ten minutes implodes with major historical revisions that would be offensive if they weren’t so eye roll inducing. If you end up spending the first hour of the movie trying not to slam your face against a hard surface like I did, I recommend strapping a pillow on your head.

Netflix shows the movie rated as 1.5 stars. It stars William Butler as Gingerdead Man, Paris Wagner as Cherrie (like Carrie, get it?), Kent Fuher in drag as Trixie and a bunch of other people you won’t recognize.

Sweetbleeders mourn deaths, celebrate lives of local music friends Ana Anguiano • College Times Quite a lot has happened since Sweetbleeders came together to record an album. Band member and beloved friend Mark Erickson of local mainstays Colorstore and Gospel Claws passed away in September of 2012. Adding to the heartache, this past October, Amy and Derrick Ross, also known as Bisbee’s Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl, both passed away—a tragic loss that shook the foundation of Arizona’s music scene.

Still, they live in the hearts of their loved ones and the music they inspired.

Sweetbleeders are back this year with a new album full of new and old songs that pay tribute to their friends in the best way possible: through great music.

Robert Vining is a thoughtful guy who takes short but meaningful pauses before he speaks. It’s clear that talking about the friends he’s lost is rough, but he bookends his sentences with a hearty laugh as remembers them.

“We were really close,” says Vining about Erickson. “We were musical partners. I saw him at some show in Tempe and a friend of his approached me and [said] ‘I really like what you’re doing. You should come see my friend Mark’s Band.’ I met Mark and he was looking for a place to live and that was kind of the beginning of us hanging out and working together.”

“I started helping him with the Colorstore record he was making then and we just started playing a lot together and working and writing together and that’s what we did for the next nine years,” he says.

Vining says several of the songs on the new album are about Erickson, including “Dumptruck,” which has the spirit of

Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” But when asked if writing these songs has helped him in some way, Vining takes a minute.

“Yes and no,” he says. “It does help. It makes you do something that you don’t want to do, which is think about it in a different way. It forces you to focus on it and then you feel weird about it because you think, why am I making this thing out of it?

But it’s a good way to deal with what you’re thinking and what you’re feeling. Especially if it lightens your load a little bit.”

The upcoming album, Enjoy Every Sandwich, is delightful collaboration packed with strong guitars, ukulele, horns, violin and pedal steel guitar. There are love songs and even political vaudeville on the album, but one of the most special tracks includes Amy Ross’ vocals.

They had made plans to play together, but unfortunately Ross passed away before then. Vining was still able to perform with her on stage in a way. He played the track live with her vocals accompanying him during a memorial for her and her husband, Derrick.

“I’m really glad that we got that song made. It was so fun. Every time we played together it was always the best time ever. I know she was in pain a lot and that Derrick was dealing with a lot, but whenever you hung out with them they dealt with it with humor,” he says.

Islands ready to sparkle in 2014 Ana Anguiano • College Times Nick Thorburn, who is sometimes referred to as the sparkly Nick Diamonds, has been rocking the indie world since he hit it indie-big with his debaucherous band The Unicorns.

But as the front man for Islands, Thorburn has been unstoppable force of creativity. Islands released their fifth studio album last year, Ski Mask. It was a change of pace for the band as they had parted ways from ANTI Records and decided to release the album on Thorburn’s own label, Manqué.

Thorburn is a busy dude with a lot on his plate, but before he took off for tour he chatted with College Times about his latest album, his less-than-stellar college days and B movies.

Hey Nick, happy New Year! How did 2013 treat you? What were some of the highlights?

2013 was a good year, but felt more like a precursor to 2014. The things I was doing in 2013 feel more like prep for this year. I’m much more excited for 2014. Even still, there were highlights— touring and releasing Ski Mask is an obvious one. Working on the music for the terrific “Catherine” web series (created by Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp) might be another.

How was the transition from being on your previous label to your own?

Smooth sailing. My only complaint is that I wish I’d done it sooner. Our distributor Red Eye has been excellent, and owning the masters is a huge existential relief.

It’s all the same shit at the end of the day—every label is scrambling fruitlessly to try and sell records, so why not point the blame at myself at the end of the day.

Much less conspiratorial anguish that way.

From what I understand, the songs on Ski Mask are several years old. Do you still have songs in a backlog waiting to be used for a future project?

Nope! I’m happy to say that the well is now completely dry. 2013 was a pretty good year for writing songs, though, and I have about a dozen new ones lined up. Whether they all stand up over time is another story.

Ski Mask was recorded live, so it did it make bringing the songs out on the road easier?

Absolutely. However, we don’t like anything to be too easy, so there are a few songs (“Wave Forms,” “Death Drive,” “Nil”) that I played piano/keyboard on the recording but merely sing live, so Evan and Geordie have to do double

How did your experiences at film school shape the career you have now?

I think it helped with story structure.

Songs that have a narrative that is honest and interesting can be much more compelling than a bunch of first-person bellyaching. I try to indulge in that mode of songwriting whenever I can.

What were you like in college?

Quiet and solitary. And broke as fuck.

The album cover of Ski Mask comes from “Attack of the Redneck Mutants.” Do you have any B movie recommendations for us?

It’s not a B movie per se, but it is an extremely low-budget film. It’s called “Driver 23” and it’s one of my favorite films. It’s a documentary about a failed metal musician in Minneapolis in his late 30s who spends all of his spare time trying to make the biggest metal record of all time, driving away his wife and band mates in the process. It’s “American Movie” meets “Spinal Tap.” What do you have in store for 2014 beyond this tour?
