Can we expect a new battle over COVID-19 vaccine?

BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ After a year of fighting over masks, we have something new to look forward to likely beginning: arguing over whether or not refusing to get a vaccine against COVID-19 constitutes a public health menace.

Me, I’ll be getting the vaccine as soon as I can. For a few reasons, including my own peace of mind, medical evidence that it will prevent me from getting others sick, and because I’d like to spend some time with my father—who’s about to turn 75 and is in badly failing health— without fearing that I’ll transmit COVID and kill him.

As for what you do, I suppose that’s not really my business.

However, it may be the government’s business, at least as many legal scholars read the 1905 U.S. Supreme Court case Jacobson v. Massachusetts. That’s the case that gives states the power to protect public health, including mandating vaccines for schoolchildren.

Arizona, as you may know, has carved out vaccine exemptions for medical reasons, religious beliefs and when “immunizations are against the personal beliefs of the parent.”

Given that the state currently has no mask mandate, I can’t imagine Gov. Doug Ducey will require COVID vaccines any time soon.

Towns and cities, however? That might be a different story. And it’s where things could start to get contentious.

In Phoenix, where Mayor Kate Gallego has taken a strong public health stance against COVID-19, a vaccine mandate could spark a huge political firestorm.

In Tempe, where progressive politics hold sway, I could see a vaccine mandate being well received. That wouldn’t be the case in Mesa, Gilbert or Scottsdale, where more conservative politics are the norm.

The West Valley is anybody’s guess. The real question: What would the GOP-controlled Maricopa County Board of Supervisors do, given that their mask mandate has remained in place since June 20? www.LovinLife.com

I don’t foresee mandatory COVID vaccines being passed by any local government here in the Valley.

But your employer? That’s a different story.

Employment in Arizona is “at will,” which gives your boss wide latitude in establishing working conditions. That likely includes the ability to require a vaccine for all employees who want to keep their jobs.

That isn’t to say employers have total authority: Workers would still have the ability to seek a medical exemption or get a waiver based on their religious beliefs.

That’s especially true in businesses with 15 or more employees. If you work for a mom-and-pop operation where those legal protections don’t apply? No vaccine, no job could be the rule, should your employer decide to go that way.

Lots of businesses could refuse service to patrons who don’t get vaccinated.

Restaurants could institute a “no shot, no service” rule. Airlines could forbid you from flying. Grocery stores could bar you from entering, while accommodating you with curbside pickup.

Note: I’m not saying local governments or businesses will do this or that they should do it. I’m saying they could do it.

Given the near riots that being forced to wear a mask has caused in Arizona, I’m not sure anyone will be brave enough— or foolhardy enough—to wade into that particular brand of apocalypse.

So once again, we’ll all be on our own.

As a believer in personal responsibility, I’ve never much minded that. I wear a mask to protect myself and others, and I’ll get the vaccine.

If you want to be patriotic—or be Buster Badass—and skip it, go ahead.

Worst-case scenario, your refusal ends up thinning the herd a bit. You’ll be missed. We might even lift a, uh, shot in your memory. After the pandemic dies down, of course.

Dear Gabby Gayle: My daughter is so frustrated with her husband that I told her I was going to write for advice. They have four children under 8 years old. My daughter quit her teaching job to stay home. Two of the kids are doing virtual learning at home. Her husband makes a nice living so money is not an issue. My daughter is practically running all day helping with online learning and managing the two who are not in school.

She often doesn’t get the meal on time or get his favorite clothes washed and ironed. Her husband complains that she did better when she was working. When he comes home and sees the house in disarray he looks around and says, “What did you do all day?” She says it makes her so mad she wants to explode. Any advice?

Dear Worried: Years ago, I was in your daughter’s spot. I had six children at home during the summer.

I spent quality time with my kids and my house was often in disarray. At that time, I saw a “Family Circus” cartoon by Bil Keane in which the husband always asked his wife what she had done all day.

So, she decided one day she wouldn’t do anything. When husband came home, the house and wife and kids were in total disarray. The kids and wife were still in their pajamas, dirty dishes everywhere, toys everywhere. Husband says in amazement: “What is going on?” Wife says, “You always ask me what I did all day. Well, today I didn’t do it.” I did this exact thing to my husband. He never again asked me what I did all day.

Dear Help: This is a scenario that is playing itself out in many elderly households in the country. It is not always the man who rebels against giving up the family home. Sometimes it is the woman. My advice is to tell your husband that it is much better to shop around and find a place that meets their needs, and is a place they feel good about, than waiting till one of them has a health emergency that will require them to be “put” somewhere, not of their choosing. I don’t like the idea of being “put” somewhere, do you? I suggest you get some outside help for a few hours a day for now, while you look around from your armchair.

When most congregate-care facility residents and staff have been vaccinated against the virus, it will be safe to visit the places you have chosen from your armchair search. If he is still dead set against it, tell him you are going anyway! He will soon realize he wants to be with you.

Wishes come true at Benevilla Benevilla is thankful for the Marley Park Philanthropy Team, who hosted an Adopt-a-Family donation drive for new blankets and pajamas to support the members of their Family Resource Center programs during the holiday season.

Jigsaw Health supports healthy pickleball play

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI Patrick Sullivan Jr. and Ashley Leroux started playing pickleball in 2018 and quickly became addicted.

Enjoying the sport so much, the couple incorporated it into their business, Jigsaw Health, a North Scottsdale-based vitamin and supplement company. Launched earlier this year, Pickleball Cocktail is designed to reduce cramping and increase hydration in pickleballers.

Pickleball Cocktail is a sugar-free, orange-flavored electrolyte powder containing 800 mg of potassium, roughly the equivalent of two bananas. The formula was created by Sullivan Jr.’s dad, Patrick Sullivan.

“We use a combination of stevia and monk fruit, two natural sweeteners,” Leroux says. “There are no sugar alcohols, so people won’t have tummy problems.”

It also includes dimagnesium malate, an energizing form of magnesium, as well as sodium chloride to keep pickleballers hydrated, energized and free from

cramps.

“Most players don’t realize there are actually two types of muscle cramps,” says Leroux, the business development manager at Jigsaw Health. “If you start cramping during a game, that’s a sign that your body is low in potassium. If you cramp up in the middle of the night, that’s a sign your body is low in magnesium. Jigsaw Pickleball Cocktail addresses both of these concerns.”

Sullivan Jr. and Leroux began playing pickleball in the summer of 2018 in Flagstaff. Sullivan Jr. has a background in tennis, but Leroux previously hadn’t picked up a racquet. The Fountain Hills couple were 41 and 35, respectively.

After Sullivan created the products, the couple hit the ground running, so to speak, handing out samples to pickleballers on courts around the Valley.

Medical Marijuana or Recreational?

Valley doctor weighs in on Proposition 207

BY SARAH DONAHUE While the medical marijuana program has existed in the state for years, many Arizona residents probably never thought they’d see the day when the state voted to legalize its recreational use.

But with the passage of Proposition 207, that day has come, and marijuana will soon be here to stay.

Proposition 207 legalizes the possession and use of marijuana for people older than 21. It also allows the state to enact a 16% tax on marijuana sales and requires the Department of Health and Human Services to make rules to regulate marijuana businesses.

The recreational sales of marijuana could start around March, according to reports.

For many, this raises the question of how to use marijuana products and how to find the right dose. Some have perhaps dabbled with cannabis in the past or have a medical marijuana card. For others, it may be their first time trying it.

Dr. Elaine Burns, one of Arizona’s first doctors to receive cannabis credentials, weighed in on the matter. The Scottsdale naturopath reminds that even though recreational use is on its way, “the medical program does not go away.”

“It’s going to get confusing,” she says, emphasizing that recreational marijuana does not replace the medical marijuana program. “People are going to start seeking out recreation for their medical treatment, and it’s going to be a bit of a problem.”

Recreational use of marijuana can be great for relaxation and socialization in the same ways that alcohol is used, Burns says.

On the other hand, cannabis can also be used medicinally for relief of a variety of

health ailments, like chronic pain, sciatica, migraines, Alzheimer’s, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or autoimmune conditions, Burns says.

However, “If you have a medical condition, you don’t go to the liquor store,” she says.

Burns, 64, is the founder and medical director of North Phoenix’s Southwest Medical Marijuana Physicians Group and says older Arizona residents are the predominant demographic with whom she works.

For the last 10 years, Burns has worked with the physicians group to help design detailed treatment plans for patients, also educating patients on how to find a proper THC dosage and what to look for while purchasing marijuana products. “(Southwest Medical Marijuana Physicians Group) is not a certification center,” she says. “It’s not about getting a card in the medical program; it’s about learning how to use cannabis medicinally to get better.”

People seeking relief from health ailments should not use marijuana recreationally, she says, adding that they should get a medical marijuana card and a treatment plan.

It’s important for people to make the distinction as to what they’re using marijuana for, because if one doesn’t know what they’re doing, “it could be very dangerous,” she explains. “The doctor needs to know what medications they’re on.”

To avoid a “mix of contraindications of cannabis with opioids or sleep aids,” it’s important to have a discussion with a physician on how to get off of those medications and how to start a treatment plan with cannabis, Burns says.

She also mentions those looking to treat their medical ailments with recreational marijuana will be hit with the 16% sales tax from the state, which can be avoided with a medical marijuana card.

tent of 10% or lower. THC is the psychoactive ingredient that makes users feel “high.”

Depending on preference, users can choose to administer marijuana products a variety of ways, including vaping, smoking, consuming edibles or applying topical products.

Whether its marijuana flower or edible products, too much THC can cause anxiety, agitation or increased heart rate, she says.

“That’s where they’re going to get into trouble.”

New marijuana users should start with something simple like vaping flower with a low percentage of THC and steer clear of edibles, Burns recommends.

Vaping devices provide a healthier alternative to smoking marijuana, because it’s “cooler and cleaner for the lungs,” she says.

“I’m a proponent of vaping the flower for the obvious reason that you avoid the combustion,” Burns says. “You’re not applying a flame and you’re not getting all the byproducts of combustion that gets also inhaled into the lungs.”

When someone vapes flower, they can take “a puff or two” and get an immediate reaction within 5 to 10 minutes, she explains. This makes the chances of overconsuming THC very low because they can slowly dose until they feel the desired effects, Burns adds.

With edibles, however, “you swallow it, you wait 90 minutes and you hope it works,” she says. “Most people don’t think it’s working, and they take more. And now they’ve doubled down on their dose.”

“You’ll never lethally overdose, but many people have ended up in the emergency room,” Burns says. “They think they’re having a heart attack. I’m not saying they are, but it can cause anxiety, increased heart rate, heart palpitations—they don’t know what’s going on.”

THC in an edible form is processed in the body differently, Burns says. Edibles are very strong, and they can lead to problems for some, which is why it’s so important to be careful and start “low and slow.”

Another thing for new users to avoid is marijuana concentrates, which are sometimes referred to as wax, shatter and oil, she says.

“The word concentrate should scare a new person away,” Burns says. “That means it’s concentrated. The word concentrate equals strong.”

For those who want some of the benefits of marijuana without the psychoactive effects, cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, can be an easy way for someone to dip their toe in the water, Burns says.

CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the marijuana plant and has grown in popularity over the years. It can be purchased without a medical marijuana card. CBD products are very similar to THC products and can be administered in many of the same ways.

From a pharmacology standpoint, CBD works and has shown to be anti-inflammatory and can help with anxiety as well as muscle spasms, Burns says.

“The problem is (CBD) is on literally every corner, and they have to be careful of quality.”

Many people will use CBD and say it doesn’t work, she says. “It’s a quality and quantity issue,” Burns explains, saying that low-quality CBD and a lack of knowledge of how to dose properly can make it so people are unable to reap its benefits.

Whether it’s CBD or THC, the same thing holds true. It’s vital to understand what you’re taking and to find the proper dose, she says.

The legalization of recreational marijuana leads people to a fork in the road, Burns says. The most important question to ask one’s self is, “Am I doing this for social reasons? Or am I doing this for medical reasons?” And come up with a game plan from there.

BY SHELLEY GIORDANO Excerpt from What’s the Deal with Reverse Mortgages?, 2nd Edition Rethink Press, 2019 Some people have heard that a reverse mortgage is a scheme or a scam perpetrated on helpless seniors. Others may consider a reverse mortgage a welfare handout. Many are surprised to learn that the 100th U.S. Congress initiated the modern reverse mortgage with the 1987 Housing and Community Development Act and that it was signed

by President Ronald Reagan in February 1988. The U.S. Congress tasked the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) with designing a reverse mortgage that protected the elderly but would encourage lending in the private sector as well.

In December of 1988, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a notice asking potential mortgage lenders to participate in a demonstration program that “will insure up to 2,500 reverse mortgages on the homes of elderly homeowners, enabling them to turn their equity into cash.” Under the HECM Insurance Demonstration, the modern reverse mortgage was born.

In this way, the FHA solved the problem of protecting both the homeowner and the lender. It modified the existing FHA insurance program to fit reverse lending. Understanding how the FHA operates in traditional lending provides a helpful comparison. Created in 1934, as part of the National Housing Act, the FHA provides mortgage insurance on loans made by FHA-approved lenders throughout the United States and its territories. The FHA insures mortgages on single-family and multi-family homes, including manufactured homes and hospitals. It is the largest insurer of mortgages in the world, insuring over 34 million properties since its inception. In 1965 the FHA became a part of HUD. At the height of the Depression, Congress and President Franklin Roosevelt created an incentive for lenders to provide financing for certain higher-risk borrow-

ers by protecting the lenders from loss.

FHA insurance premiums were assessed on these loans and provided the funds to insure against loss. In traditional FHA loans, homeowners pay upfront and monthly insurance premiums that provide lenders with protection against losses should the homeowner default.

The FHA lenders bear less risk because the FHA will pay a claim to the lender in the event of a homeowner’s default. To qualify for insurance protection these loans must meet specific requirements established by the FHA.1 As we know, insurance is predicated on the participation of the many to cover the losses of the few. In other words, the participants pool funds (via paying premiums). These funds in turn transfer risk to the insurance entity. Ingeniously, the new reverse mortgage, the HECM, adopted the FHA insurance concept but tinkered with it in the following ways in order to adapt to reverse mortgage needs: 1. Insurance premiums are not paid monthly but are added to the loan balance.

2. The homeowner/estate is released from liability should the loan balance exceed the home value.

3. If the home value does not cover the loan balance, the lender is protected by the FHA.

As you can see, the FHA solved the problem. The resulting HECM, which includes FHA insurance, is designed to encourage lenders to finance cash disbursals, but should circumstances not go as anticipated, the lenders cannot lose on the money they have financed. Additionally, the HECM protects the homeowner (and his or her estate) from loss should the homeowner live so long that the loan balance grows beyond the home value. The consumer safeguards are substantial and are becoming progressively better both for the individual borrower and the taxpayer. Unfortunately, these HECM consumer safeguards seem to elude the financial press and many of the financial advisers on whom many Americans rely for accurate information on their retirement options.

Even with HUD’s continued efforts to refine the program, over time program weaknesses emerged. Especially during the housing bubble years, the HECM was used to bail out hopeless situations.

Some people took reverse mortgages but did not take seriously the requirement that they keep up to date on tax and insurance obligations. In other cases, a number of younger spouses not on title were displaced when the borrower died. And finally, some borrowers used the HECM irresponsibly by drawing down their entire initial credit limits at closing, leaving no cushion for falling home values. These were serious problems and jeopardized the program and its reputation. In response, the 113th Congress passed the Reverse Mortgage Stabilization Act of 2013. It was enacted in order to protect not only the non-borrowing spouses but to restore financial health to the FHA Mutual Mortgage In-

surance Fund. Over the years, the HECM program has been self-sustaining; the insurance pool was never intended to be a taxpayer bailout. When the housing bubble collapsed, however, the fund’s solvency was in jeopardy. HUD responded by changing lending standards, and the HECM, in particular, was altered significantly. As a result, the fund’s economic strength is improving.2 Financial assessments are now a basis for HECM loan approval. To counteract the effects of potential tax and insurance defaults, there are formulas to set aside equity to assure that tax and insurance costs are paid. These set-asides are required for those who cannot establish willingness and capacity to meet these basic housing obligations. To bolster program safety, limits have been placed on how much equity can be drawn early in the loan. Finally, a non-borrowing spouse (NBS) status was created to allow a younger spouse not old enough to borrow (62 years old is the minimum borrowing age) to remain in the home if the actual borrower dies. So rather than being a fraudulent scheme designed to fleece seniors, the modern reverse mortgage, aka the HECM, is a program put in place by the government of the United States. As FHA Commissioner Brian Montgomery is fond of saying, the HECM is the “law of the land.” Admittedly the HECM was not perfect at inception.

But like many financial products, the program has evolved. HUD continues to fine-tune the program to provide better consumer safety as well as improved risk management for the insurance pool.

A reverse mortgage is neither bad nor good in and of itself. Its value lies in how the borrower uses it.

The No. 1 most modifiable risk factor of dementia

BY AZ BALANCE AND HEARING AIDS Hearing loss impacts more than 48 million people in the United States and is listed by the Department of Health and Human Services as the third most common chronic disorder affecting seniors.

Unfortunately, for many, age-related hearing loss is inevitable, impacting nearly 50% of seniors between the ages of 60 and 70, almost 2/3 of people between the age of 70 and 80, and nearly 80% of individuals over the age of 80.

Age-related hearing loss is characterized by the progressive loss of receptor (hair) cells in the ear, which consequently reduces the quantity, and quality, of neural connections from the ear to the brain. This slow-onset disease can have a significant impact on several key brain areas, including the memory, hearing, speech and language portions of cognition.

Several key research studies have pointed to the potential links of hearing loss and dementia, including the work from Dr. Frank Lin and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins Medical Center that indicate hearing loss can increase the risk of dementia by 200% to 500% (see summary data in Figure 1).

Every 3 to 4 seconds, another patient is diagnosed with dementia, a diagnosis that is expected to triple in the next 30 years. Unlike other diseases, dementia patients’ physical body outlives their mental capabilities by 10 or more years.

There is no cure for this catastrophic disease, but there are treatments available, including several ways to decrease your risk of developing dementia.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and the National Institute on Aging found that individuals with hearing loss (when compared to participants with normal hearing) are at a significantly higher risk of developing dementia over time.

The more hearing loss they had, the higher their likelihood of developing the memory-robbing disease.

“A lot of people ignore hearing loss because it’s such a slow and insidious process as we age,” Lin said. “Even if people feel as if they are not affected, we’re showing that it may well be a more serious problem.”

Three risk factors associated with hearing loss and dementia include social isolation, cerebral atrophy and cognitive overload.

Social isolation is the impact of reduced social and physical activity. Withdrawal from social situations is common in individuals with hearing loss. Many studies cite feelings of embarrassment, fear of making mistakes in conversations, and feeling like you are not part of the conversation. It is common for individuals with hearing impairment to separate themselves from family, friends and community. This retreat from social activity has even been found in individuals with a mild degree of hearing loss. In addition, individuals with hearing loss are less likely to engage in physical activity. Both increased social isolation and reduced physical activity are strong risk factors for the development of dementia.

Active aging is one way to quell social isolation. Active aging is the process of optimizing opportunities for better health, continuing development of knowledge, and increased security to maximize quality of life as you age. The word “active” is used to describe a person’s involvement with social, physical, economic, spiritual and civic affairs. We all share the same goal to maintain autonomy and independence as we age, and thus we must rely on preserving the tenets of interdependence (socialization and reliance on family and loved ones) and intergenerational solidarity (maintaining companionship with age-matched peers) to ensure active aging.

Social isolation and depression are major risk factors for the development of dementia, as both increase as we age. Being a lifelong learner and staying active is important to maintain a healthy, active brain and can also reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Some studies have shown that social activities, larger social networks, and a history of social contact are associated with better cognitive function and reduced risk for cognitive decline.

Hearing loss is not normal, and neither is the excess strain that it puts on your brain.

While hearing loss may be more common as we age, it is critical that hearing loss be treated. With hearing loss, the brain is constantly on overload trying to fill in the missing pieces and follow the conversation. Increased cognitive load is considered a risk factor for developing dementia. Cognitive load, as measured by pupillometry, is a measurement of how hard your brain is working to follow a conversation. Recent research has found that individuals who treat their hearing loss do not work as hard to listen (i.e., have a reduced cognitive load) and have as much as a 20% increase in memory recall when following a conversation.

In a recent study, Dr. Jamie Desjardins of the University of Texas at El Paso demonstrated that current hearing loss treatment options can improve brain function. It is known that hearing loss, if left untreated, can lead to emotional and social consequences, reduced job performance and diminished quality of life. Recently, research has shown that untreated hearing loss also can interfere with cognitive abilities because so much mental effort is diverted toward understanding speech.

The research was aimed at measuring core cognitive functions that were beginning hearing loss treatment with NeuroTechnology.

After only two weeks of hearing loss treatment, cognitive testing revealed a significant increase in percent scores for recalling words in working memory and selective attention tests, and the processing speed at which participants selected the correct response was faster.

By the end of the study, participants exhibited significant improvement in their cognitive function. Since 2011, multiple longterm studies have provided strong evidence that treating hearing loss may eliminate the risk of developing dementia.

that treating hearing loss “may offer a simple, yet important, way to prevent or slow the development of dementia by keeping adults with hearing loss engaged in conversation and communication.”

Hearing Loss & Dementia Cerebral atrophy (aka brain shrinkage) The association of a shrinking brain, resulting from the loss of neurons, with dementia has been long documented. Even people with mild cognitive impairment show signs of cerebral atrophy.

In recent years, scientific studies using advanced brain imaging techniques (including fMRI, functional magnetic resonance imaging) have demonstrated that hearing impairment is associated with accelerated brain atrophy in the overall brain, as well as even more advanced reductions in volume associated with the memory, hearing, speech and language portions of the brain.

Individuals with hearing loss can experience significant cerebral atrophy. The most significant reduction in cerebral volume occurs in areas involved in memory, speech, language and hearing.

Tips for active aging include: • Share a meal with family and friends three to five times per week.

• Commit to an aerobics/exercise regiment.

• Learn a new hobby each year.

• Play an instrument (or learn a new instrument).

• If you love to read, keep reading (try to mix up the topics!).

• If you don’t read much, try to read a book every other month.

• Participate in classes at your local senior center.

• Volunteering at a local hospital, shelter, etc.

David Bowie’s music resurrected for massive livestream

BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI David Bowie’s longtime keyboardist, Mike Garson, is preparing for a “monstrous” livestream that will feature at least 31 fellow alumni and 25 singers.

Ian Astbury of The Cult; William Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins; Joe Elliott of Def Leppard; Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction; Corey Glover of Living Color; Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and Gavin Rossdale of Bush are among the guest vocalists who signed on for the Friday, January 8, “Mike Garson’s A Bowie Celebration.”

“Every day, more singers and musicians keep coming on board because it’s an easy ask during the pandemic,” Garson says. “Nobody’s doing anything.”

Bush’s latest album, “The Kingdom: Deluxe Edition,” features a cover of Bowie’s “Heroes” with Garson on piano.

“It began with a track I did for him for MusiCares,” Rossdale says. “He rang me up a couple weeks ago and asked me to perform for the five-year anniversary of David’s death. There are going to be several singers.

David died. I love it. It’s a real honor.”

Garson says his Bowie tribute shows and this livestream are bittersweet.

“I’ve been traveling the last four years doing shows with alumni, playing David’s music,” he says. “I’ve done about 150 shows, and about 100 singers have joined us on these tours.”

“Mike Garson’s A Bowie Celebration” will be available for 24 hours.

“It’s just a lot of work,” Garson says.

“I’m sure you can imagine because each person has their song they want to do,

and which musicians am I using on which song, who’s recording what and in what studio.”

Singers and performers are recording bits in Switzerland, Canada, Los Angeles, England and New York. Garson creates music for it for about 15 hours a day, seven days a week. The show is slated to be more than three hours. Livestreams, he says, are the new paradigm.

“It’s a new way of doing things,” Garson says. “It could turn out to be a financial disaster or it could turn out to be great or average.

Most importantly, I just want 100,000 people to see it because you’re never going to get this many stars in one show.”

The number of participants is really a testament

to Bowie’s ability to appeal to musicians and beyond.

“There’s been a lot of great, great artists over the years, but the influence that he’s had on other singers who came after him—in fashion and in acting—is the largest of any artists I’ve ever seen,” Garson says.

“He’s had the widest net. I’ve probably played for over 1,000 singers in my life as a performer and he’s, by far, the best.

I hate to compare. He’s just such an artist.

I was hired for eight weeks, and I ended up doing 1,000 shows and 20 albums. I obviously liked it.”

Pick Up the Beet 3 immunity-boosting recipes to start 2021

RECIPES BY JAIME LYNN RUIZ Raw beets and raw beet juice should be consumed in small doses because of their high sugar content. However, when beets are fermented, they are among the healthiest vegetables available, because most of the sugar is eaten up by beneficial bacteria during the fermentation process, while the other health-boosting ingredients remain.

Fermented foods are also chock full of probiotics, or good bacteria, which are extremely important for balanced gut health. Studies have found fermented beets have a number of additional ben-

efits beyond probiotics, including lowering blood pressure due to the naturally occurring nitrates in beets, which are converted into nitric oxide in your body. Nitric oxide helps to relax and dilate blood vessels that in turn improve blood flow.

Additionally, fermented beets have been linked to an increase in stamina, mental clarity and reduced inflammation, as well as a boost in immune function because they are high in vitamin C. The bottom line? The more you incorporate fermented beets into your diet, the better. But many people aren’t sure how best to add beets to a meal. The simple recipes below are a great place to start!

Pick Up the Beet Salad Dressing Ingredients: • 1/4 cup beet kvass • 1/2 lemon juiced • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper Directions: Combine ingredients in a bowl.

Whisk to emulsify to a thick consistency. Drizzle on salad.

Better Beets Rainbow Salad Ingredients: • 1/4 cup chopped fermented beets • 1/4 cup greens • 1/4 cup chopped red onion • 1/4 cup grated carrot • 1/4 cup yellow bell pepper • 1/4 cup chopped pepperoncinis

Directions: Prepare vegetables. Arrange in a colorful rainbow in dish. Top with Pick Up the Beet Salad Dressing or a dressing of your choice.

Fermented Beet Hummus Ingredients: • 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained • 3 cloves of garlic • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1/4 cup grated fermented beets • 1/4 cup tahini • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 cup ice water (optional)

add grated fermented beets, garlic and olive oil and process until mixture is almost smooth. Add tahini, chickpeas, lemon juice and salt to the mixture. Blend on high for 2-3 minutes until smooth, scrape edges halfway through, drizzle additional olive oil while blending if necessary. Add a drizzle of ice water while blending for extra cream texture. Scrape into a serving bowl and top with fresh herbs or more Directions: Rinse and drain chickpeas. In a food fermented beets. Serve with veggies processor or high-powered blender, and pita bread.

Juiciest turkey meatloaf ever

BY JAN D’ATRI It’s one of those family-style favorites! Meatloaf never seems to go out of style.

There are thousands of recipes for meatloaf using beef. But I’ve been looking for a turkey version of a classic meatloaf for a very long time and finally found one that will be my go-to from now on!

Because turkey can be a bit dry, I was thrilled that this version is so juicy. That’s because of a few secret tips and techniques that make this meatloaf moist, flavorful and a perfect meal to make ahead, freeze and have for later.

One of the secrets is, believe it or not, a couple of tablespoons of water! It’s how I make my meatballs, so I know it really helps keep the meatloaf juicy. The other

Juiciest turkey meatloaf Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 large sweet yellow onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced • 8 ounces mushrooms, trimmed and very finely chopped • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 7 tablespoons organic ketchup, divided • 1 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup Quaker oats • 1/2 cup milk • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten • 2 tablespoons water • 1-1/2 pound ground turkey • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional • 1/4 teaspoon thyme, optional • 3 tablespoons gochujang sauce (or any sweet chili sauce), optional

technique is to make a paste-like mixture of milk, oats and breadcrumbs that gets added to the mixture. Finally, I decided to spice up the top with a combination of organic ketchup (for sweetness) and an Asian sweet and spicy sauce (for heat) called gochujang, readily found in most grocery stores and Asian markets.

If you love meatloaf and think that is has to be beef to be delicious, this recipe is going to change your thinking after one single scrumptious bite.

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place parchment paper in a 9-by-13-inch baking sheet with a 1-inch lip. In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter. Add onions and cook until soft and translucent. Add garlic and cook for several minutes. Add minced mushrooms and cook until mixture loses most of the moisture and thickens up slightly.

Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Add Worcestershire sauce and 3 tablespoons of ketchup. In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs, oats and milk. Stir to a paste-like consistency. Add the paste to the bowl with onion and mushrooms. Add eggs, water, ground turkey, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes and thyme. Gently mix until all ingredients are well combined.

Spoon mixture onto the parchment-lined baking sheet and form into a loaf shape. In a small bowl mix together the remaining 4 tablespoons of ketchup and gochujang sauce. Spread over the top of the turkey loaf. Bake uncovered at 400 degrees for about 50 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

2020 ends with gifts of love and kindness

The most magical thing about the holidays is the way we so joyfully give to others. Not just our friends and families—but to complete strangers who are in need. At Hospice of the Valley, we look forward to some annual traditions that remind us how blessed we are to be able to bless others.

Rewind to November when the spirit of giving first started to blossom. Families suffering hardship because of COVID-19 were finding it hard to put a holiday meal on the table. Our teams identified 54 patients and families in need. Hospice of the Valley purchased turkey dinners with all the trimmings from Boston Market. And our amazing staff and volunteers showed up on Thanksgiving Day to deliver each and every one of them with a big smile and a full heart. They drove all over— from San Tan Valley to Avondale, Cave Creek and Surprise—to truly make it a day of thanks and giving.

A hundred more families enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast, thanks to Amber Kovarik. Hospice of the Valley cared for her sister, Shannon, who succumbed to cancer at our Dobson Home in 2017. After her death at age 32, Shannon’s Giving was born—a foundation dedicated to helping

patients and families who recently lost a loved one to cancer or have someone so sick that the thought of putting on a Thanksgiving dinner is completely overwhelming. In the past four years, Amber has donated hundreds of Thanksgiving meals—she says it’s a gift of gratitude in memory of her sister.

“I know how tough life can be when you have a loved one in hospice. My hope with Shannon’s Giving is to shed some light on a dark time,” says Kovarik, a branch manager and loan officer for Guild Mortgage in Chandler.

On Thanksgiving eve, nearly 100 Thanksgiving meals from a Whole Foods store in Chandler went to families under Hospice of the Valley care in Maricopa and Pinal counties, and to three inpatient care homes—Dobson Home in Mesa, Lund Home in Gilbert and Eckstein Center in Scottsdale.

“It is such an honor to be able to do this,” Kovarik said. “It is so important for me to give back, because Hospice of the Valley gave us so much. The passing of my sister was the hardest and most emotional experience of my life. The way our caregivers handled this extremely trying time was incredible—they felt like family

to us.”

Hospice of the Valley staff helped make the deliveries. So did Amber’s father, who flew in from Florida, as well as Amber’s husband and enthusiastic daughters, 7-year-old Tatum and 5-year-old Jade.

Another sweet tradition that inspires our entire staff to open their hearts happens at Christmastime. For 21 years, our care teams have “adopted” families who could use some holiday cheer. These are vulnerable families experiencing the stress of terminal illness coupled with financial constraints. We are so honored to make them feel loved and supported, and to ensure that everyone—especially children—will have presents to open on

Christmas morning.

Since our Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays program began, we’ve “played Santa” to over 1,100 families, including 2,200 children—adding a few more this year because of the pandemic.

Some of the items provided are necessities—food boxes; a twin mattress with all the bedding; help for a family with four children who had been homeless; utility payments for two families; an auto insurance premium for a patient still able to drive; rent for the month. Other are gifts that surprise and delight—bicycles; a decorated Christmas tree, stuffed bears (donated by a florist); gift cards from the Phoenix Police Department; presents for a family of 10 living in a trailer; and gifts for a 14-year-old Kenyan refugee who is her mother’s primary caregiver.

“There are no words to describe the joy and satisfaction each of us receive in giving to these families,” says Mara Goebel, Hospice of the Valley’s bereavement manager. “It’s our way of enfolding them in a warm, caring embrace.”

This year was certainly a challenging year for all of us, but it didn’t depart without revealing a silver lining. We learned that generosity and gratitude can flourish in any circumstance, obstacles can be overcome, and a new year awaits with good things to come.

‘Autologous’ blood donations are possible

Is it possible to donate your own blood to yourself?

Yes, you can. This is called “autologous” blood donation. It’s done in the weeks before nonemergency surgery. The blood is stored until the operation. Autologous donation is most often employed in surgery on bones, blood vessels, the urinary tract and the heart, when the likelihood of transfusion is high.

This form of blood donation is good for the patient, but it’s beneficial to society, too.

People over the age of 69 require half of all whole blood and red blood cells transfused, according to the National Blood Data Resource Center (NBDRC). Giving blood to yourself cuts down on the demand for blood.

Typically, each donated unit of blood, referred to as whole blood, is separated into multiple components, such as red blood cells, plasma, platelets and antihemophilic factor, for transfusion to individuals with different needs.

With an aging population and advances in medical treatments requiring blood transfusions, the demand for blood is increasing. On any given day, more than 40,000 units of red blood cells are needed.

Volunteers donate almost all the blood transfused in the United States. Using current screening and donation procedures, a growing number of blood banks have found blood donation by seniors to be safe and practical; if you’re a geezer, you probably can help the cause.

To be eligible to donate blood, a person must be in good health. In general, donors must weigh at least 110 pounds.

Most blood banks have no upper age limit. Donors are screened for AIDS, hepatitis, other diseases and other possible problems.

blood in their circulation, and adult females have about nine pints. The donor’s body replenishes the fluid lost from donation in about 24 hours. The red blood cells that are lost are generally replaced in a few weeks. Whole blood can be donated once every eight weeks.

While you may be loving the cooler temperatures and the brisk mornings, our plants are not quite as excited and need a little more care during the colder months. Just like in nature, the colder temperatures and darker days signal to the plant that it is time to go dormant to conserve energy. This month, we will discuss some simple ways to keep your indoor plants happy and healthy during the colder season.

If you are anything like our family, the first thing we do during a chilly morning is turn the heater on to enjoy our breakfast. While it warms us up, our indoor house plants do not appreciate the shock of the heater coming down on their delicate leaves. Look around your home and ensure that your plants are not directly underneath a vent. When plants are dormant, their leaves are preparing for freezing temperatures. Being directly under a heater vent can send them into shock, cause them to dry out quickly, damage the leaves and remove the little humidity that we have here in the winter.

Speaking of humidity, Arizona does not get to enjoy the humidity like most states do in January. It can be beneficial to give your indoor plants a little mist during the colder months. Using room

temperature water, I spray my plants with a light mist from a spray bottle once a week. Another way to increase humidity is to bring them in the bathroom with you while you shower. I put a few of my plants on the bathroom counter while the shower is running and allow them to absorb humidity in a natural way.

One of the most important things that all plants need is some form of light.

Whether your plant prefers indirect or direct sunlight, ensure that they are still getting adequate sunlight during the winter months. The days are darker and shorter, and you may need to reposition your plant to ensure it is getting enough sunlight during the day. As the seasons change in my house, so do my plant locations. In our house, we rotate the locations of our plants every season to ensure that they get moved around and have different exposure to light. In the store, we rotate our plant locations every week.

Finally, reduce the watering. Because our plants are dormant, they do not need as much water. The only exception to this is winter blooming plants, such as poinsettias and zygo cactus. You will continue to water those plants regularly since they are “in season.” It is important to remember that our plants are living beings that go through the seasons just like we do. While we prefer a warm blanket and hot cocoa, our plants may not.

The Future of Pain Management How to find what works for your body

However, one of the areas of health care that was previously lagging behind was the pain and injury management sector. This space covers a wide range of health-related issues, including acute pain and injury, joint and nerve pain, headaches and migraines, sports injury, and rehabilitation and palliative pain.

This field in the health care industry encompasses a range of pain specialists who work together to alleviate and treat these ailments for their patients. Unfortunately, this sector previously experienced a disconnect between specialists that caused patients to have to run around to various providers and locations to receive proper treatment. The process was not simple or streamlined, which caused a lot of frustration and prolonged patients’ ability to re-

ceive the effective treatment that would give them the relief they needed.

Medical leaders recognized this disconnect in the pain and injury management sector and realized it was time to make some changes to the system. At Redirect Health, the pain management team works together on-site to provide comprehensive and simplified care.

Something we advise all our clients, especially coming off the holidays, is to focus on a diet that is low in sugar. Sugar breaks down collagen, reduces our white blood cells’ ability to fight off harmful viruses and bacteria, and encourages unhealthy yeast overgrowth in the gut.

If you think about a banana, the banana with brown, spotted, wrinkly skin has the highest sugar content, and this same glycation reaction occurs in our bodies when we consume excess sugar.

Successfully transitioning to a low-sugar diet is not easy, so I always begin with a 14-day no sugar challenge to quickly start seeing results. This 14-day window will reduce wrinkles, lighten brown spots, increase your healing capacity, reset taste buds, and reduce cravings so you can easily make a low-sugar diet a lifestyle.

Here are 10 of my favorite tips and tricks for success:

Stay accountable Track everything you consume on an app, such as MyFitnessPal, or in a food journal. When we write down everything that we plan to eat, we think twice before consuming it.

Find a friend When we have a partner embarking on the same journey, we are more likely to stick with it. A no-sugar diet usually requires us to eat or prepare our food at home so cooking and food prepping with a friend or family member will make your 14-day journey more pleasant.

Start each day with 16 ounces of warm lemon water Thirst can present as hunger, and when we are dehydrated, we may reach for food when we really need water. Your goal should be half your body weight in ounces daily.

Exercise Thirty minutes of morning exercise will stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day, release feel-good hormones and set the theme for your choices. You will make better food choices without even thinking about it when you exercise in the morning.

Skip the morning fruit juice and enjoy a glass of celery juice Celery juice will make your skin glow, suppress food cravings and support your liver.

Black coffee Sugar, creamer, artificial sugars and flavoring will make you crave more sugar throughout the day. Skip the mocha frappuccino and soda and instead enjoy one cup of black coffee, an espresso shot or a cup of green tea.

Be prepared Keep ready-to-eat celery sticks and cucumbers in your fridge. If you need something to snack on—you will be prepared.

Know your levels An annual physical and blood test with your PCP will make sure your thyroid and sex hormones are balanced, your vitamin D levels are adequate, and your blood sugar stays within normal limits.

A food-sensitivity blood test can also tell you which foods to take out of your diet to reduce inflammation in your gut so you feel great and have less cravings.

Finish eating by 7 p.m. and consume your daily meals within a 12-hour window If you have breakfast at 6 a.m., make sure you are finished with dinner by 6

p.m. This rest period gives your GI tract the opportunity to digest all food and allow your body to focus on healthy hormone production and cellular repair while you sleep.

Bedtime herbal tea ritual A nice cup of warm herbal tea before bed sets the mood and tells your body it is time to rest. Always try to be in bed by 10 p.m. When we get adequate rest, we reduce cortisol levels in our blood and make healthier choices.

Always consult with your health care professional before starting a new diet or exercise program. This diet is not recommended for patients with abnormal blood sugar levels.
