Fresh Start New Year’s resolutions apply to DVUSD, too

W

hen most people think of the New Year, they concentrate on how to start fresh with new behaviors, routines or life perspectives; New Year’s resolutions are all about starting over.

Forbes reports “only 25% actually stay committed to those resolutions after 30 days and only 8% accomplish them.” What does it mean? Are the tasks too hard? Is the job too difficult? I think success lies in one simple concept: accountability toward a plan.

Deer Valley Unified School District did not become one of the best school districts in Arizona by chance, it was by commitment to a purpose; we call it our strategic plan.

The plan is designed with input from impacted people like community members, parents, students and staff. It has guiding values like respect, accountability, integrity, is student driven and excellence that should live on for decades because of their foundational quality. Your Winners O’Connor golfers take top prize at Deer Valley Cup

S

andra Day O’Connor High School takes all team sports seriously and the boys’ golf team is no exception.

The varsity team recently won the Deer Valley Cup, a competition among Deer Valley Unified School District schools.

“It was a tough one, but we fought it out and emerged victorious,” says Clayton Johnson, an O’Connor freshman. “It was great to travel as a freshman and play in other parts of the state.”

Johnson has enjoyed his time on the golf team and aptly balanced sports and academics.

“It has been a fun year and the advice I would give any freshmen is to enjoy it as much as you can,” Johnson adds.

His favorite thing about being on the team was seeking advice from other similarly minded teammates; young men he feels he can count on. Heinz also enjoyed the recognition.

“I believe everyone wants to be noticed, but

not everybody is comfortable being watched,” Heinz says.

OHS is one big family and the golf team is an integral part of that family. The golf team is there for each other, and it has high expectations.

Bringing the Heat Mild winters sometimes call for a little extra warmth

his is the time of year when Phoenicians are required to post photos online, gloating about another gloriously mild winter in Arizona (while our friends and relatives back east are bracing for another arctic blast). But with nighttime lows this month in the mid-40s, living your best life outdoors might require a little help—and a little heat—from external sources. So, in the spirit of creating perfect outdoor moments, here are five options for keeping warm on your back patio this winter.

Chimineas Made of clay or metals, these moveable fireplaces resemble pot-belly stoves. They burn wood, gas, or propane (depending on the model you choose). Chimineas serve as elegant decor, even when they’re not in use.

Online reviews suggest you get what you pay for, especially with chimineas constructed from clay.

• Pros: Entry-level price point. May be moved (when cold) to different parts of your backyard.

• Cons: limited heat projection • Price: An entry-level clay chiminea starts at $60.

Fire pit Whether it’s a permanently constructed yard structure or a self-contained fire feature, a fire pit is the ultimate gathering point for larger groups. Unlike directional heat sources, a fire pit radiates heat outward toward all who gather around its flames. Stone fire pits can be constructed to blend in with your outdoor architecture and design. Self-contained versions can be placed wherever you like on any given evening. The difference between the two is similar to the difference between a built-in barbecue and a portable outdoor grill. Larger, professionally constructed fire pits can include wraparound bench seating, drink shelving, and coordinating hardscape

such as flagstone or pavers. The only limit is your imagination (and your budget).

• Pros: 360-degree heat radius, great for large groups • Cons: Heat cannot be directed toward any one particular area of your yard • Price: Self-contained models start at $100.

Patio heaters A mainstay of resorts and restaurants in the Valley. The ubiquitous patio heater puts heat on all who sit below its warming tower. Patio heaters are effective in taking the chill out of the air but tend to be somewhat utilitarian in design. It’s not to say they look bad—they just look like outdoor appliances rather than integrated design elements. They feature a matchless starting process, plus the ability to adjust the heat output. Many models come with wheels, allowing them to be easily hidden away during the summer months. With a reasonable price point and the ability to easily move them to different parts of your patio, patio heaters are one of the best all-around values when it comes to outdoor heating solutions.

• Pros: Functional. Moveable.

• Cons: Limited aesthetic value • Price: Starting at $140

Fireplace The outdoor fireplace is a statement feature that can be constructed as part of the original patio design or built as a backyard upgrade.

A well-designed fireplace is beautiful, day or night, on or off. It also doesn’t require that you sit beside it to be able to enjoy it. A fireplace works wonderfully as a heat-generating gathering point as well as a background source

of light and ambiance. Because they are not moveable it’s important to carefully consider its location before you have one built. A gorgeous fireplace tucked in the far corner of the yard away from the patio might ultimately be ignored by guests. But a well-placed fireplace will become the social hub of your backyard.

• Price: Outdoor fireplace kits start a $1,300

Tabletop fire feature If you’re looking for an eye-catching and budget-friendly heat source, there are a number of tabletop fire feature options. The smaller size (compared to other heat sources) makes them perfect for smaller gatherings.

They can be placed in the middle of your patio table like a centerpiece, giving off modest heat but providing beautiful flames.

• Pros: Wonderful aesthetics. Modest entrylevel prices.

• Cons: Limited heat output. More form over function. Proximity to open flames.

A Sharpshooter ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ delves into the legendary Westerner

M

any know Annie Oakley as the female sharpshooter from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, but there is more behind the legendary figure than just her shooting skills.

The musical “Annie Get Your Gun” gives a deeper look into her life, especially her romantic relationship with Frank E. Butler.

Created by Irving Berlin and Dorothy and Herbert Fields, the musical features wellknown songs such as “Anything You Can Do” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”

In 1999, the show won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

The Starlight Community Theater is staging the updated version of the classic from February 28 to March 15.

The updated version is more culturally sensitive and contemporary than the original.

The show spotlights the budding romance between Butler, a womanizing star of Buffalo Bill’s traveling show, and Oakley, a young woman from modest beginnings who grew up in a cabin with Quaker parents.

“I really want to focus on that love story and how that develops,” says director Christian Graca.

Graca plans to show the complexities of their relationship through nonverbal gestures like glances and small touches. Staging the playing in an intimate theater helps with these subtle exchanges.

“Those glances, those touches are lost in a larger venue, but in a more intimate venue, the audience will be able to get that quickly,” Graca says.

Although the show is a fictionalized account of their relationship, it does touch on

issues they faced, including Oakley’s untraditional role.

To be together, Oakley and Butler need to move past feelings of pride and jealousy.

A Starlight director since 2010, Graca wanted to show the strength of love between Butler and Oakley, who in real life were together for over 40 years and died within less than a month of each other.

Although their relationship had a rocky start—with the two of them squaring off in a sharpshooting competition—they soon show they are willing to sacrifice to be together.

In the show, a number of Native American characters have central storylines. The show especially delves into the relationship between Oakley and Sitting Bull, who teaches her how to read.

A father figure to Oakley, Sitting Bull also serves as comic relief. Graca says it was important to cast an actor from a diverse background for Sitting Bull. Graca wanted to stay true to the real people represented in the show and to accurately portray their relationships.

This is especially true in the representation of Buffalo Bill, Sitting Bull and Oakley—the three key members of the traveling show.

“We really try to recreate history as classically and as realistically as possible. They were a family. They traveled all over. So, we are really focused on the relationship between Sitting Bull, Buffalo Bill and Annie as well,” Graca says.

Oakley is a strong female character in the show, but her hopes, dreams, simple beginnings, sense of pride and love for Butler make her character complicated.

“She was the most humble out of everybody,” Graca says. “She was amazing at what she did. She traveled Europe. She was a woman ahead of her time, but she didn’t care about

that. She only cared about Frank.”

Very few musicals have female-led characters.

Graca likens “Annie Get Your Gun” to shows such as “Hello Dolly” and “Mary Poppins.”

For the costumes and set, the company worked with local museums to obtain guns and other props, and Old Tucson inspired the set. Audiences can expect to see Arizona-themed elements in the backdrop. It was important to Graca to get the details correct, like dressing Oakley in dresses.

“I’ve seen other productions of ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ where Annie is wearing slacks,” Graca says.

“That would never have happened in the 1890s. She would be in long dresses. In every picture of her, she was wearing a dress or a skirt.”

Graca has a long history with the production, as she played Jessie, Oakley’s little sister.

When she was casting the show, she chose a variety of children for Oakley’s younger siblings and teens and adults for townspeople.

With any Starlight production, mentoring is important, especially between older and younger actors.

“It’s great when you have an intergenerational cast because they learn so much from their older castmates,” Graca says.

The production team ranges from teens to those in their 70s. Within the company, young adults can take on key roles within stage management, lighting and sound design and choreography.

“We are trying to teach the next generation about all of the different backstage aspects as well,” Graca says. “Not everybody wants to be in the limelight, but they want to be able to participate.”

Stunning and Vibrant Congo’s masks and

music take center stage at the MIM

M

arc Felix knows how to make an appearance. Dressed in all green, save for a white scarf, Felix searches for harmony in the world.

A member of the Musical Instrument Museum’s board of directors, Felix spent 30 years in Congo, and the North Phoenix destination is offering a glimpse into the lively masquerade traditions of Central Africa in “Congo Masks and Music: Masterpieces from Central Africa.”

Presented by U.S. Bank, the exhibit was curated by Manuel Jordán, Ph.D., MIM’s deputy director and chief curator. It features more than 150 rare masks, instruments and costumes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It also includes 12 mannequins in full, authentic outfits worn in ceremonies.

Felix spent time in Africa simply because “that is my job.”

“It wasn’t always gratifying,” he says.

“Sometimes I was very disappointed because things didn’t turn out the way I

wished, but I have had a lot of pleasure.

“It’s the same thing in America or wherever. If I would have stayed in Belgium, it’s not always a bouquet of roses.

Some situations were painful—like the war in Congo, all the massacres in Congo. That’s painful.

But then you go back, and you get hope again. That’s why I dress in green.”

Felix says the exhibit represents “the best” of his collection. The masquerades educate, entertain, demonstrate power, promote fertility and connect humans with the spirit world.

“Congo is huge,” he adds.

“There are about 300 ethnic units or cultural units, as they are called.

Manuel and I, together, we chose the ones that are most representative.

“Within each group, we picked the best possible examples. If we did not have them, we got them from the Royal Museum for Central Africa and a collection in Hong Kong. We went to different sources to try to get the best.”

As for the masks, they represent powerful supernatural beings who come to life in human, animal or hybridized form in masquerades. Through music and dance, they express different peoples’ worldviews, histories, religious beliefs and morals.

Constructed out of materials including wood, feathers, beads, fiber, and metal, the intricate masks on display in the exhibition showcase remarkable artistry and craftsmanship representative of dozens of Central Afri-

can cultural groups.

The collection also features an array of musical instruments, including drums, bells, rattles, whistles, thumb pianos, xylophones and harps.

“I hope when guests walk into the exhibition, they feel like they are stepping into the performance arena. Being in the presence of these full-body masqueraders, they’ll get a sense of how impressive this art form is,” Jordán says.

U.S. Bank Community Affairs Manager Art Perez says his company is pleased to present the exhibition.

“We try to be involved in our communities whenever we can,” he says. “We have, what we call, our pillars of engagement and support—work, home and play.

The MIM fits into the play pillar.

“We’re big supporters of the MIM. We really enjoy our partnership with them. We like to give folks in the Phoenix area and visitors alike this kind of exposure to culture. The MIM is important to us.”

Celebrating Hip-Hop The MIM explores the genre with a weekend full of events

T

en years ago, when the Musical Instrument Museum opened, the first signature event was centered around hip-hop. To mark the decade anniversary, the MIM is returning to the genre.

“Celebrate Hip-Hop” runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, January 18, and Sunday, January 19, and features beat-making and hip-hop dance workshops, street art demonstrations and performances combining street-style dance and live DJ sets.

“We thought it was kind of fitting to start the 10th year anniversary and bring that full circle,” says Ryan Borden, the MIM’s public programs manager.

Contributing to the activities will be AZ Beat Lab and Samuel Pena.

“He’s a good friend of the museum,” Borden says. “He’s been here before in several different capacities.”

Jukebox Dance Studio in Downtown Mesa will lead a dance workshop. The Furious Styles Crew is slated to perform and curate a concert.

“We have one performance slot,” Borden says. “Like all of our programs—cultural or artist-themed—there’s so much more to that theme than we’re able to dig into and uncover in the span of a weekend.

“Edson ‘House’ Magaña is really talented and is originally a b-boy himself. He’s a lecturer at the Herberger School for the Arts at ASU. He is really tapped into what’s going on in the underground around here. We’re fortunate he was willing to help us put this program together.”

Such and Champ Styles will guide guests through their creative process and share their experiences as graffiti and street artists both days.

“Such and Champ Styles are going to do a live mural for us,” Borden says. “We’re going to have it on display in our education room for the rest of the year.

“They did a live mural for us years ago. They also painted the backdrop to our hip-hop display in our galleries. They’ve had continued involvement in our museum, We’re happy to have them back.”

On Saturday only, the MIM will screen the fi lm “American Beatboxer” from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The fi lm tells the story of the first American Beatbox Championships in 2010.

Residential Evictions Landlords will see significant new requirements this year

T

he Arizona Rules of Procedure for Eviction Actions are the primary source of law for residential evictions in Arizona.

Effective January 1, 2020, there are some significant new requirements for landlords.

The Arizona Supreme Court made some significant amendments to the eviction rules. A landlord who has fi led a residential eviction action is now required to also serve a copy of any lease provisions to form the basis of a case. In addition, if the eviction is based on nonpayment of rent, a copy of the tenant leger (payment history) for the preceding six months must be served with the complaint.

An Arizona landlord is already required to give a tenant a copy of the entire lease. These new requirements require the tenant be given a copy of at least part of the lease again. Although these new requirements require only certain paragraphs of a lease be served on the tenant, many if not most landlords will likely attach a copy of the entire lease, rather than cut and paste relevant paragraphs.

The State Bar of Arizona requested the Arizona Supreme Court make these changes. The stated basis for their request was tenants often do not bring the required documents with them when they meet with

legal aid attorneys. However, they do often bring everything attached to the summons and to the complaint.

Most common mistake by landlords For residential landlords, the key to any eviction action is giving the tenant the correct type of notice. Doing so gives the tenant an opportunity to fi x the problem.

Before a landlord can start an eviction action for nonpayment of rent, he must first give the tenant a five-day notice and give the tenant an additional five days to pay the rent plus any late fees. For a different kind of problem, like unauthorized occupants or unauthorized pets, the tenant must be given a 10-day notice. Sample forms are available on the Maricopa County Justice Courts’ web page, justicecourts. maricopa.gov.

Most common mistakes by tenants By far, the most common mistake by tenants is the failure to appear for their court dates. Unless the landlord dismisses your case, if you miss your court date, you will lose.

The most common legal mistake occurs when a tenant stops paying rent because they are having some type of problem with their landlord. This is known as rent striking and it does not work in Arizona.

Failure to pay rent can flip a case where the tenant potentially had some well-grounded legal arguments into a case lasting only a few minutes with a judge telling the tenant they have five days to find a new place to live.

Just like landlords, tenants must give their landlord notice and an opportunity to fi x the problem. Sample forms for tenants are also available on the Maricopa County Justice Courts’ web page.

For minor repairs, a tenant can provide written notice if the landlord does not fix the problem within 10 days, then the tenant will hire a licensed contractor, submit a repair bill to the landlord, and deduct the cost of the work from the rent.

For an essential service, the laws are similar, but the time limits are shorter. A landlord’s failure to provide an essential service is considered a breach of the lease. Essential services include running water, utilities, reasonable amounts of hot water; and of course, Arizona law specifically lists “air conditioning.”

After the tenant gives written notice, the landlord has only five days to repair a problem with an essential service. If the landlord fails to do so, then the tenants can break the lease and can move out. But what if the tenants don’t want to move? They just want functioning heating and air conditioning.

The tenant can find substitute housing (like a motel) during the period of the landlord’s noncompliance. If this occurs, the tenant is excused from paying rent for as long as the landlord does not provide the essential service.

PILOTS Association

Local group makes the Airpark a great place to fly

R

epresenting the interests of Deer Valley Airpark tenants is no small task.

The Airpark has more than 1,100 aircraft based in its 779 t-hangars, which is 100% occupied. It is the world’s largest general aviation airport in the world. General aviation is everything not represented by commercial air transportation. It includes corporate aviation, private aircraft, air tourism, recreational flying and air sports.

Since 1978, the Deer Valley Pilots Association has worked to ensure the airport’s safety, the availability of mechanics and flight instructors, and the appropriateness of city regulations. It also provides social opportunities for its members and participates in opportunities for the neighboring community to engage in special events at the airport.

Six-year DVPA director Richard Schmidt says the association’s goal is to represent and support the people who own aircraft at Deer Valley Airpark. This involves a lot of negotiation with the city of Phoenix.

“Our job is to work with the city to make sure the regulations they impose on the tenants are good ones so the tenants have a satisfactory and pleasant experience housing their airplanes there,” Schmidt says.

Two of the major areas they focus on are:

• Adequate maintenance. Aircraft need to be properly maintained so they are safe to operate and are quiet. The DVPA works to make sure the city’s regulations are conducive to providing adequate maintainers and maintenance facilities.

• Flight instructors. The FAA mandates pilots take regular safety training and refresher training to be allowed to fly. They have to get retraining and pass check rides frequently. So, an airport needs fl ight instructors and the DVPA negotiates with the city to provide adequate fl ight instruction at the airport.

“Both areas, we think, are really important to the health and safety of the airport and the pilots, but also of the neighbors, because we want everyone to be operating safely and in compliance,” Schmidt says.

Over the years, this has meant involvement in renovation projects and everything the airport undertakes to improve its conditions and stay updated. Schmidt says the airport represents a major investment for the city and the Airpark generated substantial revenue for the city, as have the companies around the Airpark that also support its operations.

The DVPA has been working on two major projects with the city.

The fi rst is an update of the regulations applying to the tenant’s use of the hangars.

In 2017, the FAA modified its regulations, expanding the way hangars can be used for general aviation. The city’s regulations do not yet conform to those new regulations, called the General Aviation Handbook.

“The FAA broadened and liberalized a lot of the things you can do with hangars and what you can store in the hangar,” Schmidt says. “The city’s regulations need to get in compliance with that.”

The second project is working out a disagreement on how the city interprets its current service provider regulations. These regulations affect the mechanics working at the airport and flight instructors who provide flight instruction.

“We’re working with the city to update the regulations for that,” Schmidt says. “They’ve had them in place for about 15 years and are in need of updating. There have been some challenges between the tenants and the city over some interpretations over the past six to eight months. We’re working our way through it and are optimistic we’ll get to a reasonable solution.”

The association wants to be sure there is a broad range of flight instructors and mechanics available to work on the 1,000-plus airplanes without undue intrusion by the city, Schmidt says. The association feels the current interpretation of regulations constrain

those services at the airport and unrealistically tax those services.

“We’re working with the city to update the hangar use and the availability of mechanics and flight instructors to expand in line with the needs and requests of our members,” Schmidt says.

All these efforts, he says, adds to the airport’s safety and the revenue generated for the city and its neighbors by the operation.

However, the association isn’t all about regulations and negotiations. They also like to have fun.

There are hundreds of pilots at the airport and the association attempts to foster ways for them to get together and share their experiences.

“We have pancake breakfasts for our members,” Schmidt says. “We share ideas on how to make the airport greater and fun things to do with your airplane.”

The next pancake breakfast is in March.

Past events have included raffles, talks by airport personnel, and a chance for pilots to show off their planes.

They also participate in airport events designed to welcome people to visit the airport to see interesting airplanes of various types such as historical craft or warbirds of World

War I and World War II. Last Christmas, they hosted an annual Christmas Cookie event, during which they distributed treats to the city Operations Desk, Cutter Aviation, the police hangar, Fish & Game and the ATC tower.

Schmidt says it is important for them to have good relations with the people at the airport as well as their neighbors. They want

In November 2019, they flew into the Navajo Indian National at Gallup, New Mexico, about 196 nautical miles from Deer Valley Airpark. They joined other pilots from around the state, including a core group from Sierra Vista Libby Field.

The planes, in addition to a pilot and up to one passenger, are filled with clothing, toys, and nonperishable food. The community service effort is open to anyone who has collected a plane load of donations.

Most goods are packed in garbage bags to best fill the planes and limit the weight, though canned goods and toiletries are put in small cardboard boxes. Sometimes they create small care packages for the children of the reservation.

Each pilot reaches out to family, friends, schools, churches, business associates and others to contribute to the goods the planes will carry.

After flying in coordinated fashion to the reservation, they unload the planes, greet the Navajo team, enjoy a brunch in Gallup and then visit and shop before returning at their leisure.

A Musical ‘Triumph’ Ryan Michelsen is living life through his songs

E

veryone has a story, and musician Ryan Michelsen is one of them.

An aspiring architect in high school, Michelsen left college after he found out it wasn’t accredited for the degree he was pursuing. He hit the road with the band 29 Needles and hasn’t looked back since.

Music is Michelsen’s life. He released the orchestral piece, “Triumph,” to be followed by “Camaraderie” on January 4 and “Magical” on January 18.

“I am in the process of releasing a large volume of music, which started with the album I released in May,” says Michelsen, who lives in the North Valley.

“A fusion of several genres, I used it to pave the way for my creative expanse into the market. I have posted music online for a long time before this, basically since I started playing piano in 2001. I wrote by ear and memory until I figured out soft ware to enhance my pia-

no’s potential. That’s why my album, ‘Pursuit of Happiness,’ has so much piano featured in it. Piano was what drove me down this path.”

To Michelsen, music is personal.

“Camaraderie is an orchestral instrumental that envisions a group of adventurers who set out on a quest with high hopes, encounter a tribulation, and therefore must rely on each other for survival,” says Michelsen, who works as a graphic designer/production assistant for an automotive parts company.

“The ending is uncertain, and leaves room for additional movements.”

“Magical” is requiem. He penned it in honor of his father who died in 2008.

“It begins with a musical illustration of his funeral,” Michelsen says. “His ashes were cast into the sea, so there is a notable change of pace and direction in the song as we follow those ashes across the oceans. We see the world as it evolves through time and culminates in a crescendo embodying the grandeur of the universe. The ending brings the listener full circle as a newly sprouted plant blows in the wind.”

Born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Michelsen moved around as a child, living in Nebraska, Maryland and New York, before spending the majority of his school years back in Illinois. His family moved to Arizona to be near his maternal grandmother and her husband.

Music has always been in his life, having taken up piano at age 8 and violin a bit later.

Despite his talents, he tried his hand at architecture at university.

“I studied architecture for four straight years in high school,” he says. “I was in honors architecture 2 by the time I left. It was just endless architecture stuff.

“I think I’m pretty creative when it comes to pursuits I like to go for, but I arrived at the university and I found out the degree I wanted doesn’t allow me to become an architect. It wasn’t accredited.

I thought, ‘This isn’t for me.’”

That’s when he joined the now-defunct rock band 29 Needles.

with,” Michelsen says. “I joined two weeks before their album release. I had to learn their whole album to tour with them. That was an experience.”

Michelsen’s strong suit is he can move in any genre.

“I don’t try to do one specific type of music at the same time,” says Michelsen, 26. “It’s my way of relaxing. It’s cathartic. I don’t try to tunnel vision it. I’m trying to express myself. Every time I sit down to write music, I keep an open mind. I may start a piece that’s a beautiful orchestral piece, but then it may turn toward electronic or new age. It can go anywhere. It depends on the story I’m trying to tell.”

His fluid songwriting process will help with his goal of creating soundtracks for movies or video games.

“One day, I hope to write for fantasy movies, video games, nightclubs, rock festivals and have the infrastructure to support the musicians who make it possible,” he says.

Michelsen just simply wants to live life to its fullest and share his music with whoever wants to hear it.

“I want to live the best way I can for myself,” Michelsen says. “It’s the best story I have. I want to enjoy doing what I want to do.”

How to be prepared for outdoor adventures this fall and winter

S

o close, and yet, so far.

The Sonoran Preserve is just minutes away from the I-17/Loop 101 interchange in North Phoenix but it offers 36 miles of trails spread over 9,600 acres of wilderness, making it a magnet for hikers, runners and bicyclists. Most, if properly prepared, will enjoy a safe and exhilarating day in the desert.

But knowing how to prepare for your outdoor adventure, what kind of condition you should be in, and what to do in case of an injury, are of vital importance.

Dr. Marc Jacofsky, Ph.D., knows the area very well. The Desert Hills trailhead is 2 miles from his home, and he has ventured far and wide on his mountain bike, developing a special affinity for the northern section of the Sonoran Preserve.

“The Ocotillo, Sidewinder and Apache Wash trails are the ones I have frequented the most,” Jacofsky says. “The Skip Rimza Paseo is a nice route back when one is tired, dehydrated or having a mechanical issue with their bike.”

That kind of awareness comes as no surprise to anyone who knows Jacofsky, a renowned researcher and chief scientific officer at The CORE Institute, an orthopedic practice.

“Hikers and runners should always watch the trail for mesquite and Palo Verde branch-

es that can pierce right through the sole of your shoe and into your foot,” he says.

“Also, be aware that one misplaced step on the angular rocks can easily result in an ankle sprain or worse. Mountain bikers need to treat every ride like it’s your first time on the trail. Loose material can cause spinouts, and rocks can cause catastrophic tire failure.

Falling is a real risk. If you’re lucky you will just have road rash from the gravel and a story to tell, but you can also end up in a cactus or fall hard and break a bone.”

Elite cyclists, like Dr. Rene Lucas, can also be seen taking advantage of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. In addition to being an interventional spine and pain medicine specialist at The CORE Institute, Lucas is the founder and driving force behind The CORE Racing Team, whose members have competed and brought home medals from bicycle races across the country and around the world.

Lucas says the most common cycling injuries are neck and low back pain, knee pain, ankle tendonitis, saddle sores and foot numbness.

“All of the ailments are almost always related to a less than ideal bike fit,” Lucas says.

neck issues goes away with proper fit and a tailored training program.”

When it comes to injury prevention, getting yourself in shape should be job No. 1. Lucas is particularly proud of the work done by the physical therapists at The CORE Institute.

“We offer core strengthening instruc-

tion and muscle strengthening programs by our well qualified physical therapists which would be helpful for anyone wishing to be active outdoors such as hikers, runners and cyclists,” Lucas says.

“And for a novice rider, I would encourage anyone interested in riding to hook up with any number of riding groups or clubs where one can learn to safely navigate off and on the roads. And always wear a helmet.”

Jacofsky echoes those sentiments and advises road riders to always be alert to cars driving too fast, too close to the bike lane, or those being driven by distracted drivers.

“For a biker, the car and the pavement are unforgiving obstacles,” Jacobsky says.

“I prefer to stick to the trails, but you should take it slow until you know the trail. Know your limitations and listen to your body.

Recognize that trail conditions can change dramatically with one rain event in the desert.

Think you know the trail and get complacent and you might be in for a surprise.

“Always carry a first-aid kit with the essentials: wet wipes for road rash cleanup, antibiotic ointment, nonstick bandages (large and small) and tweezers for run-ins with a cactus.

Carry lots of water, twice what you think you need in warmer months. Be on the lookout for snakes and do your best to avoid them.”

Jacofsky says bikers heading uphill should, “get into the right gear before you need it. And there is no shame walking if you run out of gas in your legs.

“For hikers and runners, select the right footwear. Do you have plantar fasciitis and need a more cushioned sole, or are you prone

to ankle sprains and need additional ankle support from a higher shoe or boot versus a low-cut style?”

While all those considerations can certainly reduce the risk of injury for those venturing out into the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve, accidents are still bound to happen. So are the aches and pains that come with rigorous activity.

That’s when outdoor enthusiasts have an important decision to make: should I see a doctor? Chances are, if you are asking yourself that question, the answer is “yes.”

With clinics located in North Phoenix and throughout the Valley, The CORE Institute is particularly well-suited to handle those concerns.

Excellence Runs in the Family Chamber taps Scott Zychowski the Businessperson of the Year

T

he Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce named Scott Zychowski of Andrew Z Diamonds and Fine Jewelry 2019 Businessperson of the Year on Saturday, December 7.

A third-generation jeweler, Scott moved to Anthem from New Jersey in 2009, and has forged his own path in the business world following the footsteps left by his father, Andrew, and grandfather before him.

“This is a heavy award,” Zychowski shares upon receiving the prestigious award.

“I am so incredibly proud to stand up here in front of this great community; in the company of the previous Businessperson of the Year recipients—one of them being my dad—and to even be nominated among such a great group of individuals.

It’s a humbling experience.”

The 2018 Businessperson of the Year, Krista Solomon, presented the award to Zychowski at the chamber’s annual Winter Gala.

“Scott sets high standards for community commitment and dedication,” she says.

“He is kind, thoughtful, encouraging of others, generous and supportive; and anyone that interacts with him becomes a better business leader and person.”

Zychowski balances his time between the jewelry store, his family and friends, and civic and community involvement. He

It's A Family Affair Scott Zychowski is dedicated to making Anthem’s jewels shine

A

ndrew Z Diamonds & Fine Jewelry has been an institution in Anthem for 15 years, but the business history runs deeper.

Third-generation jeweler Scott Zychowski took over the business a year ago and has been recognized for his work in the North Phoenix community. He was named Businessperson of the Year at the recent Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce Gala.

“Receiving that award is extremely special to me,” Zychowski says. “My dad (Andrew) actually received the award in 2010. I remember being there when he received that, the look on his face and how proud I was that he was recognized by his peers. It was an honor to look down and see my mom and dad looking back at me.”

The family’s jewelry lineage began in the 1940s in New York, when Zychowski’s grandfather came to America from Poland after serving in World War II. He used his GI Bill to learn watchmaking and, in 1949, he opened his first jewelry store in New York. The company quickly grew into New Jersey, where the family moved.

Andrew, the eldest son, grew up in the business, helping stock displays and clean the cases from a young age. After honing his skills, he and his wife, Beth, took over the company and raised their children, Kristen, Scott and Kyle.

In search of sunshine, the couple closed the New Jersey location in the early 2000s and moved to Anthem. Eventually, they founded Andrew Z Diamonds & Fine Jewelry. Scott followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps after graduating from Montclair State University.

“I grew up around the jewelry industry,” Zychowski says. “My dad had a store in New Jersey for 26 years. When you grow up around that it becomes part of you. It’s more than just mom and dad’s job.”

The profession came naturally to Zychowski, but he’s still deeply passionate about it. He and his father worked together for 10 years.

“He said, ‘You have to really want this,’” Zychowski’s dad told him about taking over the business. “I said there’s nothing I want more

than this. That means something to me.”

Andrew Z Diamonds & Fine Jewelry is a full-service store, performing watch repairs and selling engagement rings. Zychowski says one of his favorite things is building custom pieces for clients. He presents his customers with 3-D renderings to show how it would look on a hand. He does “whatever anyone wants, from the ground up,” he says.

“We do the old school wax casting, so it’s truly a one-off piece,” he says. “We do a lot of re-imaginative pieces and redesign it into new pieces.”

Zychowski encourages the community to support small businesses.

“It’s so important for people who are local to shop here because it makes the community more vibrant,” says Zychowski, who lives in Anthem with his wife, Jessie, daughters, Emma and Brielle, and dog, Zoe. “It adds another layer. People are making their living in the community. It’s a great place to live with a ton of character.”

Zychowski lives by those thoughts. He is on the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is a member and former president of the PBA (Preferred Businesses of Anthem).

“Get out and support, when you have the opportunity and when the business is good,” Zychowski says. “It means the world to us the community has supported us. Every year it is busier and busier. There are a lot of other small businesses that appreciate it, too.”

Apprenticeship Redux Young adults are leaning toward trade for their careers

K

icking off a new decade gives everyone an excuse to reset, and there is no better way to do that than to rethink employment.

For many young adults, the answer is simple, but they are caught in a cycle of low-wage jobs not offering steady hours or room for growth.

That may be why we’re seeing a resurgence in apprenticeships.

“A registered apprenticeship with a construction company offers a great opportunity with hands-on learning for anyone willing to work full time and attend class once a week,” says Stephan Cole, workforce development coordinator at Rosendin.

“For example, at Rosendin, which is an electrical contracting company, you’ll start out earning more than $16 an hour, plus health and retirement benefits, and you will learn everything from bending conduit in a warehouse to installing electrical wires in a stadium, to creating a computer model for a renewable energy project.”

For North Phoenix resident Daniel Aceves, becoming an electrical apprentice was the

easiest way to find work after moving to 85085 from California. In his last construction job, he had a 2.5-hour commute, no time for relaxation, and a paycheck that didn’t go very far.

“It was like Groundhog Day where I was either in the car commuting or on a construction site day-after-day with no end in sight,” said Aceves. “When I decided to move to Phoenix, I was excited to learn about this apprenticeship program because it would pay me to learn new skills and put me on a longterm career path.”

Aceves joined the program offered by the Phoenix Electrical JATC (Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee) and was hired

by Rosendin, which is known for its work on projects like the Scottsdale Stadium, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the light rail expansion.

As an apprentice, Aceves works on a highsecurity project for a confidential client just a few miles from his home. His typical day starts at 6 a.m., but Aceves arrives early to badge in, meet with the Rosendin team, and participate in a group “stretch and flex.” This daily warm-up routine starts every morning

on every Rosendin job site to help workers reduce injuries and stay safe. That’s important to Aceves, who is working underground as he learns to take accurate measurements and run PVC pipe under the close watch of a journeyman electrician.

It’s been a positive career change for Aceves, who started as an apprentice about three months ago.

“I was working construction jobs for more than two years without the benefit of having a union,” Aceves says. “By joining I.B.E.W. Local 640 and the apprenticeship program I am getting better pay and health benefits, my work is a short drive from home, and I am getting valuable experience building my career.”

As part of the apprenticeship, Aceves also attends class once a week at the Phoenix Electrical JATC in Central Phoenix, which is sponsored by the I.B.E.W. Local 640 and NECA (National Electrical Contractors Association). Classes cover topics such as electrical theory, conduit fabrication, branch circuit wiring and even computer modeling.

Unlike expensive colleges and trade schools, apprenticeship programs provide on-the-job training with little expense to the worker. At the Phoenix Electrical JATC, students pay less than $10,000 for books and tuition over the four-year program and grants are available. Upon graduation, apprentices become certified journey-level electricians who can earn $65,000 a year and be eligible for an associate degree. They can use their skills to grow into other positions such as field supervisor and safety professional.

Over the last couple of decades, society has given the construction industry a bad reputation and many high schools removed all vocational training while pushing students to attend a traditional four-year college. As tuition costs continue to rise, many young people are looking for alternatives to taking on student loan debt, making apprenticeships a great career choice for people who want to be a part of building their communities.

Many companies, like Rosendin, value their workers and set up programs to develop their skills by providing additional education, mentoring and leadership classes.

he’s got a great role model at Rosendin in the company’s new CEO, Mike Greenawalt. After graduating from Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix, he took an apprenticeship through Phoenix Electrical JATC and helped build the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant.

During his 40 years in commercial and industrial construction, Greenawalt has had a hand in shaping the Phoenix skyline with buildings such as the Sheraton Downtown

Hotel and Phoenix Convention Center. He also helped drive innovation at Rosendin by developing the company’s computer modeling department, which designs intricate plans to install electrical work on large scale projects.

In 2012, there were just six people in the Tempe office working on computer models, today there are more than 200 who create plans for projects across the country.

“In the last decade there have been monumental changes in the industry, driven by technology and innovation, and Rosendin is leading the way to attract a strong workforce,” Greenawalt says. “Our challenge now is to convince young people a career in the trades can offer unlimited opportunities to high school graduates who want to work on exciting projects that will stand the test of time.”

Apprentices also get to work on highly visible projects, whether it’s here in the Valley or at any of its 15 regional offices nationwide.

As a $2 billion electrical contracting company, Rosendin workers have helped build high profi le projects like the L.A. Coliseum renovations and Wilshire Grand Center, a 73-story skyscraper in Los Angeles.

“Apprentices may start at the bottom, but they have bragging rights, knowing they contributed to noteworthy projects all while receiving on-the-job training with great pay, a steady schedule, benefits and career growth,” Cole says.

Aceves added taking a job in a new industry can be intimidating, but you will never know how far you can go until you try. Sometimes you need to take advantage of the opportunities you never knew existed to build the future you really want.

Savings Tips Financial experts weigh in on unlocking success in the New Year

R

esetting fi nancial goals is a common resolution for a New Year. Is 2020 the year to get out of debt, buy a house, plan that once-in-a-lifetime trip, or just build up a rainy-day fund? Most people know the importance of saving, but some may fi nd it challenging to know where to start or how to create a savings plan to achieve these goals.

“The New Year is a perfect time to kickstart a savings plan to help reach fi nancial goals,” says Bryce Lloyd, FirstBank’s Phoenix Market president. “Folks typically find that by creating a savings plan early, it can help achieve other resolutions. For instance, dining out less can positively impact one’s wallet and

waistline, translating to both health and financial goals.

“When creating a savings plan, it’s important to keep the 50/20/30 rule in mind, which suggests putting 50% of income toward necessities, 20% toward paying off debt or for savings, and 30% for ‘fun’ money.”

In addition to appropriately allocating income, there are several other tips and tricks to consider in reaching 2020 savings goals: 1. Avoid peak season for big purchases: Try to time purchases during the off-season.

This can mean buying a winter coat in April when it goes on sale, visiting Italy in November, or maybe even starting Christmas shopping in July.

2. Review automatic subscriptions and payments: Look at recurring or automatically enrolled payments, and cut any streaming services, gym memberships, or delivery plans you don’t use. It also wouldn’t hurt to nix a few you do use, but don’t need.

3. Review the small purchases: Those daily latte purchases can add up to be more than $1,100 a year. Consider cutting back on nonessential, expensive food and drinks. Instead, commit to making coffee at home or packing lunch.

4. Pay down high-interest credit cards: Whenever possible, pay more than the monthly minimum balance, focusing first on the cards with the highest interest. Once these payments are back on track, resist

adding to the balance going forward. Some cards also offer balance transfers at lower interest rates but be wary of sneaky fees.

5. Be economical when eating out: When going out to eat, try to limit the items ordered to just an entrée, and steer clear of buying multiple drinks or appetizers. This strategy will not only save money but cut down on caloric intake as well.

6. Consider disputing your property assessment: Studies have found county assessors can over assess the value of a home, increasing the amount owed on taxes each year. If you think the home value wasn’t properly assessed, consider petitioning the town’s tax assessor for a revaluation.

7. Refinance your mortgage: Interest rates are still relatively low, so consider refinancing your mortgage before interest rates continue to rise even further. Just make sure to factor in any accompanying fees and expenses could accumulate with a refinance transaction.

“The best time to start saving is now, so let the new decade be the launch of productive behaviors,” Lloyd says. “Making simple changes can help form long-lasting habits that ultimately lead to a balanced budget and achieving broader goals.”

20/20 Vision Communicate a plan for 2020 instead of a resolution

A

ccording to the American Optometric Association, if you have 20/20 vision this means you are able to read the entire eye chart from 20 feet away. If you have 20/60 vision this means you see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 60 feet.

The eye chart used by most doctors is the Snellen eye chart. You know, the one with the giant E on the top line. It was created by Dutch eye doctor Hermann Snellen in the 1860s. As we head into the year 2020, what would perfect vision for this coming year look like?

20/20 vision in 2020 would include seeing situations, opportunities, challenges and relationships as clearly as possible. To do this one must define what they want, meaning, what is your purpose, what values do you live by and where do you want to be a year from now? Establishing New Year’s resolutions is a habit we all try to avoid because we know before the first page of the calendar is turned most of us have dumped those resolutions and moved on. Defining a purpose, setting some goals, having a destination in mind and establishing some boundaries is nothing like making resolutions.

20/20 vision is vision that can be communicated. Can you explain how you hope 2020 will go? Can you communicate your vision statement in a single sentence? Communicating your plan is essential because receiving feedback is essential. On the doctor’s eye chart, the first three lines are usually pretty easy to read and then as you move down the chart the average person will find themselves having to focus more, maybe even having to squint a little to see the smaller lines. Life is the same way.

As we move from month to month, like moving line by line on the eye chart, we may need to slow down. You may need to stop to evaluate. You may need to focus and ask the tough questions, is this what I was hoping for? Is this what I was aiming for? Having someone who can give you honest helpful feedback will be like the eye doctor adjusting the lenses so you can see more clearly. What is clearer, choice No. 1 or choice No. 2? There will be days when you won’t desire feedback; those might be the days you’ll need it most.

As you continue on this 20/20 journey, like the last few lines on the eye chart, the bottom lines will be the ones that will take the most effort. This will be the action steps needed to have 20/20 vision. It means being open to offering forgiveness, even to those who you have felt do not deserve it. Forgiving the unforgivable may seem like a counterproductive step. However, without offering to forgive, you may hinder your own vision.

Like the smallest letters on that eye chart, if you successfully complete these last few steps, they will reap the greatest rewards.

There’s a reason each of us should get our eyes checked every year.

he Infiniti QX-60 Luxury SUV is an attempt by Infiniti to create an SUV that fulfills a variety of needs. It is intended to provide practical daily transport, have the ability to be taken off the pavement, yet fit right in when parked next to expensive European luxury vehicles at the local country club.

For practical commuting, the QX has three-row seating, so there is no problem hauling seven passengers. The rear storage area has 16 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats up, 40 with the third row folded, and a whopping 76 by also folding the second row.

We drove the QX-60 for a week, on and off road. It lives up to most of the claims, but we feel performance will be better with a transmission that has real gears instead of this CVT, which is designed more for fuel economy than acceleration. Even so, real world gas mileage was less than advertised, at 17/23 mpg. Otherwise, there are no complaints. This is a smooth and quiet vehicle great for daily commuting, off-road camping trips or long highway journeys.

appy New Year! It is a great time with a fresh year to start is off with “kindness” crafts. After all the holidays, when things are a little less hectic, you can do things for others that may bring a smile to their face.

Kindness bugs are made from smooth stone with colored paper underneath. You can take the stone, place on paper and trace around it. Cut the circle out and hot glue to the bottom of the clear rock. Add google eyes and any other additions and you have a kindness bug. Attach a note saying you have been bitten by a kindness bug after doing an act of service or when you leave something for someone. Enjoy making your cute bugs!

Kindness clouds can be made from white paper. You make a cloud with your name on it

and add strips of colorful paper underneath.

Write ways you are kind or good qualities on the strips of paper. You can also make one for someone else to brighten their day.

Random Acts of Kindness Jars are a way to write things you want to do for others in 2020.

Each family member can take a popsicle stick and write an act of kindness. Add them to a jar and pull one out each month throughout the year. Ideas include bringing someone flowers, helping a friend or neighbor, baking the fire station cookies or anything else your family thinks of to help others.

Shrimp, Avocado and Roasted Corn Salad

alads. Lots of us are craving them right now as we’re still coming off of a holiday eating frenzy. But, if you’re going to have a salad as a main meal, it had better be a darn good one, right?

I discovered the appeal of great main dish salads when I had my restaurants. One of the most popular items on the menu was our garbage salad. Believe me, it was fully loaded with meats, cheeses, caramelized vegetables and oh, yes, somewhere in there was romaine.

Well, I just stumbled on another loadedwith-flavor salad that inspired me enough to write about and share with you! It’s a shrimp, avocado, tomato and roasted corn salad with a creamy, dreamy pesto mayonnaise dressing.

(You can substitute yogurt for the mayo!)

This salad checks all the boxes for me. It’s got a little crunch, a smooth, creamy dressing and when you add jumbo shrimp, charred corn, ripe avocado, crisp bacon and sweet cherry tomatoes, you’ve got a winner all the way around!

It’s kind of the salad version of a one-pot wonder, because you use the same pan to char the corn, brown the bacon and cook the shrimp! The pesto dressing puts it over the top.

With salads like this, we can make it through another year until sugar cookie platters and eggnog coax us into submission!

Shrimp, Avocado, Tomato & Roasted Corn Salad Salad Ingredients: - 2 ears of fresh corn, shaved off the cob - 6 strips of bacon, cooked crisp and rough chopped - 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes cut in half - 1 lb. large raw shrimp, peeled with tails off - 4 cups chopped iceberg or romaine lettuce - 1 avocado, diced - 1/2 cup grated parmesan, pecorino or Romano cheese - Buttermilk pesto dressing Buttermilk Pesto Dressing Ingredients: - 1/2 cup buttermilk (*See below for homemade buttermilk) - 1/2 cup mayonnaise or plain Greek yogurt - 1/2 cup pesto, homemade or store-bought - 1 small shallot, minced - 1 tablespoon lemon juice - Pinch of salt and pepper, to taste Salad Directions: Heat a skillet over high heat. Add the corn kernels and let them dry roast, stirring until their edges begin to brown and caramelize. Transfer the corn to a plate to set aside. Reduce heat to medium-high.

In the same skillet, add the bacon and cook until

crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving the grease in the skillet. Add the shrimp and sauté until cooked and pink, about 2 minutes per side (depending on the size of your shrimp). Remove shrimp and set aside to cool. Make salad dressing.

Assemble your salad by tossing together the lettuce, corn, bacon, shrimp, tomatoes, avocado and cheese. Drizzle with dressing and serve.

Dressing Directions: Whisk together all ingredients until blended. Season with salt and pepper. *For homemade buttermilk, combine 1/2 cup milk and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Stir to thicken.

Connolly’s Grill is a Straight Party Owner Brian Cavender genuinely loves his work

C

onnolly’s Grill is the place to party, says owner Brian Cavender.

The excitement about the bar and all the events they host is unsurpassed. Cavender really loves his business.

Connolly’s sat at 54th and Northern avenue for five years, until a space in 85085 opened a little closer to Cavender’s home. He jumped at the opportunity.

“We are family owned and operated,” Cavender says. “Doing it on your own is a different animal. I’ve been doing it for 15-plus years.”

Cavender is a longtime restaurateur, who kicked off his career at Bobby McGee’s. The 20-year DJ decided he wanted to open a spot the whole community could enjoy—that they do.

“We’re giving them a place to cut loose and have a good time,” Cavender says. “As long as you’re a good person we love you.”

The 4,000-square-foot business is a hot spot for dining, nightlife and casual drinks. There is no one type of clientele.

“We get everything from bikers to businessmen to cowboys,” Cavender says. “When you get out here you get a little bit more of everything.”

Connolly’s is particularly proud of its range of events. They have theme parties every month, DJs and live music occasionally.

“We are the premier sports event in the area,” Cavender says. “For UFC we are the only place people go. We are the hotspot. You want to go out and have fun, you come to Connolly’s.”

Connolly’s is particularly proud of its St. Patrick’s Day party. Last year’s event had over 2,000 people in attendance, according to Cavender.

“We do a lot of stuff,” Cavender says. “We are one of the top three St. Patty’s Day events in the Valley. We do bike events. We are one of the few businesses who do a little bit of everything.”

As an Irish bar and grill, Connolly’s knows a thing or two about St. Patrick’s Day. Cavender is also proud of its food. Clever offerings include Leprechaun Balls, homemade mini cordon bleu balls ($10); Irish nachos with fries, Swiss sauce, chopped corned beef and onions ($13); corned beef and cabbage ($15); bangers and mash, grilled Irish sausage, caramelized onions and gravy ($13); and traditional bar fare.

“People always rave about our food,” he says. “People love to eat at Connolly’s. It’s like that’s where people go.”

Cavender’s two daughters Courtney and Carley work alongside him at the business. He wants Connolly’s to genuinely connect with the community and he gives back whenever he can. He offers free buffets on Christmas Eve and supports the local football team.

“We did different fundraisers,” Cavender says. “We did the football kickoff party. It’s a giant fundraiser for the school. All the parents come and the kids come.”

Cavender is a longtime member of the community and genuinely wants to know his patrons and community members. He says he staff and community make Connolly’s enjoyable.

“We have great people here. The bartender working now has been here since day one,” Cavender says. “I want to build a relationship with you. I feel like that is important.”

Personal trainer Carter Lay lifts clients into the New Year

N

ew Year Resolutions may be intimidating for people looking to make healthier decisions or improve their workout routine. Anthem personal trainer Carter Lay is making health and wellness goals manageable.

Training for two years, Lay works at the Anthem Community and SkinSport Fitness centers.

“I’ve been working out for the last five years,” Lay says. “I always knew I wanted to do something around fitness and would help other people.”

Lay started training people he knew through friends and saw how other people grew and it strengthened his own love of fitness. ACE certified, Lay wants to understand his clients’ fitness levels, desires and experiences to best tailor a workout to them.

“First of all, I find out what their age is and if they have previous exercise experience,” Lay says. “I don’t want to push anyone too hard with no fitness experience. We advance the workout every week.”

Lay says clients have different goals for their personal training sessions.

“I’ve done the whole spectrum from people losing weight to gaining strength,” Lay says.

“I like finding athletes who want to focus on strength and conditioning.”

The New Year is the time to set goals. Lay knows a lot of people have resolutions and he wants to help them achieve those goals.

“For 2020, people who want to lose weight or build strength, I’d love to help them out,” Lay says.

A Sacramento native, Lay moved to Anthem in the fift h grade. He graduated from Boulder Creek High School, where he played basketball, baseball and football. At Glendale Community College, he played baseball. Recently, he’s enjoyed competing in bodybuild-

ing competitions and took second place at a national show in Pittsburgh.

“I have another show this year,” Lay says.

“I will probably do it as long as I can. When I first started lifting it was about sports and stuff like that, but I really have a love for training now. I’ve made it a lifestyle and something I want to do for the rest of your life.”
