Old Main now on historic register

Future generations will now get a glimpse into Peoria’s past, thanks to a recent naming of Peoria High School’s Old Main on the National Register of Historic Places. The Keeper of the National Register recognized the iconic building, located at 11200 N. 83rd Ave., for its commitment to preserve the original structure and historical essence.

Recognized properties must be at least 50 years old, have maintained the integrity of the facade of the building and reflect a historical significance, such as architecture, people, a place or an event. Built in 1922, Old Main was designed as a Spanish Colo-

nial revival by the local architectural firm of Lescher, Kibbey and Mahoney, and has distinct architectural characteristics that represent the era. When originally built, it was the only building on a 10-acre lot surrounded by hundreds of acres of farmland. Nearly 50 years passed before other buildings were added to the campus.

“I’m thrilled to see the National Register of Historic Places has recognized this distinctive building,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said. “The city of Peoria has a remarkable history and through the preservation of our important assets, such as this extraordinary site, we solidify our commitment to carrying our incredible heritage with us and passing it along to future generations.”

Last week, Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) was sworn in for her second term representing Arizona’s Eighth District in the U.S. Congress. She was previously elected to Congress on April 24, 2018 during a special election and has held office since May 7, 2018. After members of Congress took the oath of office for the 116th Congress, Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy announced Congresswoman Lesko will serve on the House Rules Committee. She will be one of four Republicans on the Rules Committee.

At the turn of the 21st century and after more than 86 years of use, Old Main was in desperate need of repairs and closed in 2008.

Recreation transitions to online registration system

The city of Peoria is transitioning to a new online registration program called RecPlace. This will replace the previous system called RecConnect. The online registration system will be available beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, January 7. All registrations for the spring season will begin on that date.

To ensure the city only brings in current and accurate information into our new recreation software application, the city is only migrating customers that have completed a transaction in the last 18 months. All other customers will need to create a new account. If you do not have an account and need one created, call the administration office at 623-773-7137 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Proof of residency may be required.

Parents of children who will be enrolled in kindergarten next school year are invited to attend a kindergarten preview night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at all Deer Valley Unified School District K-6 and K-8 schools.

City committed to responsible growth At 64 years young, the progress and growth that the city of Peoria has made over the past six decades is nothing short of incredible. In 1954, when our city was incorporated, Peoria had 1,925 residents and covered 1.2 square miles. Today, we are home to more than 172,000 residents and span 178 square miles.

With more than half of our city left to be built, growth is not only our most pressing challenge, it’s also the most exciting transformation to come.

The economics of population growth may be surprising to residents, as it is much different from other parts of our country. In Arizona, property taxes are substantially lower and do not fully cover the expenses necessary for city services, such as public safety, streets and lighting.

Fortunately, Peoria has an admirable foundation on which to build. Our history of sound fiscal policies and smart growth principles embrace and protect our way of life, while charting a steady course to a solid future.

State and private land Private landowners or the Arizona State Land Department owns most of the vacant land in Peoria. It’s important to distinguish that Peoria does not control how or when these properties develop. In fact, the Arizona Constitution designates that State Land be sold for the primary purpose of funding K-12 public schools.

Arizona has many laws in place that shield private property owners from being mandated to convert the use of their land to less intensive development. This means cities have no legal authority to stop private landowners from developing their property.

Local governments are authorized to create policies and planning documents to help maintain the highest quality of life and property values of the future.

Growth management tools Peoria’s General Plan is an essential document that serves as a roadmap of our city’s vision for growth and development. It outlines the best locations for commercial and residential development, parks, trails and open space. It also provides key decision-making guidance as new issues emerge. This living document is updated and sent to the voters for approval every 10 years.

Another important growth management tool is called the Sonoran Preservation Program. This document is specific to Peoria’s unique features and focuses on open space, historical areas, and wildlife corridors that should be preserved. Even though preserving open space in Arizona requires a direct purchase of the land, doing so is the only way to prevent growth.

Growth mitigation While the guiding principles in these documents can’t stop growth, we take care to mitigate the impacts where possible. For example, when a developer comes to the city with a request to rezone their land, we work alongside them to incorporate Peoria’s policies relating to items, such as land use and density.

In addition, our zoning process requires the submission of traffic studies, adherence to requirements, such as the guarantee of 100 years of water for each home built, and requirements for neighborhood outreach, which is an important process that gives resi-

dents a voice in building the community they want.

Effect of growth on Peoria schools When we consider the impact of growth, we have to consider the impact of that same growth upon our local school systems; which is a concern that we all share.

Within the State of Arizona, local governments have no jurisdiction over local school districts. Instead, the State — through the school districts — has the constitutional responsibility for the funding, location, capacity and overall operation of schools. This means that although Peoria has four separate school districts within our boundaries, the city has no control or jurisdiction over their operation.

Despite this, we recognize the importance of working closely and collaboratively with our school districts and include them in every development review process. To help schools assess growth, the city also provides monthly permit and trend data. In addition, Peoria has a long-standing policy of requesting that developers work with school districts on the impacts of their development.

As school districts work to respond to growth, they do so under the funding limitations provided by state law and the will of their district voters, a fact highlighted during the last election cycle.

As our city continues to grow, we remain committed to working alongside our district partners in any ways that we legally can to meet the needs of those who call Peoria home.

Arizona has had explosive growth for more than 60 years and future growth is inevitable. Whether it is managing residential development, protecting critical open spaces or promoting economic progress, know that your Peoria leadership is working hard behind the scenes to position and promote Peoria’s finest future.

I believe we have no greater duty as a state than to educate our children. Not merely to make them “worker bees” or “college applicants,” but to enable them to pursue their dreams with their God-given talents and to ensure they become successful citizens to protect and perpetuate our republic.

As Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, my top two priorities have been the success of our students and accountability for the taxpayer dollars the Arizona Department of Education allocates and oversees. My strategic plans for Arizona education — the AZ Kids Can’t Wait plans — focused on ways to improve student

achievement and recommendations for increased education funding and teacher pay.

I was proudly able to keep my campaign promise to the citizens of Arizona – repealing Common Core. Arizona once again controls its standards. Three long-term problems, which prevent our students from receiving the education to which they are entitled, are

addressed in our new standards.

We strengthened phonics reading standards. We were the first state to have implemented foundational writing skills, i.e., cursive writing standards. We now expect memorization of basic arithmetic facts – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Furthermore, we resolved longstanding, incorrect allocations of Title I and IDEA funding. EVERY federal grant has been audited by an independent firm to ensure the accuracy of the allocations going forward. NO money was missing, and ALL funds went to the designated programs, albeit in the incorrect amounts.

process allows districts and charters to begin receiving their funding July 1 – the first day of the fiscal year. This allows schools to staff and fund the programs that help our students be successful.

Arizona was also one of seven states nationally to be awarded a federal grant that connects rural students and schools with highspeed broadband.

While the Office of Indian Education remains unfunded by the Legislature, we have supported these underserved students through savings within ADE. It’s imperative that our legislature supports our Native American children.

The implementation of the new IT system, AzEDS, is estimated to be saving our taxpayers tens of millions of dollars by eliminating duplicative or incorrect student counts.

Yet there are ongoing issues that must be addressed by either the Legislature, the Arizona State Board of Education, or both.

ADE is not authorized by the legislature to expend but a small portion of the funding it allocates for the oversight of the parental choice Empowerment Scholarship Account program. This makes it difficult to retain the staff necessary to provide vital customer support to parents and oversight of taxpayer dollars.

The “Menu of Assessments” and changes to certification (allowing general education teachers to provide instruction to special education students) both potentially jeopardize all Title and IDEA funding to our most vulnerable students.

Funding to support academic standards development and implementation has not been appropriated by the legislature. This lack of funding is how Arizona became ensnared in the Common Core Standards.

The Legislature increasing teacher certification renewal from six to 12 years depletes the funding used to investigate “bad actor” teachers, all while incidents of inappropriate or unprofessional behavior are on the rise.

While all are important, these funding or policy issues are not the most pressing concerns jeopardizing our children’s education and our country’s future. We must return our focus to the true and original intent of the American education system, which is pursuit of truth, knowledge for its own sake and the betterment of our children as educated citizens. The lens of the labels — White, Black, Hispanic, Special Education, Economically Disadvantaged, etc.

Currently 56 percent of our third-graders can’t read or write with minimum proficiency. We have known for decades “Why Johnny Can’t Read” (Flesch, 1955). English is a phonic, not a symbolic language. Yet whole language/look-say/word memorization is how reading has been taught for the past 100 years, creating millions of functional illiterates, dyslexic and learning-disabled students.

these unacceptable results and close achievement gaps until Arizona parents demand their elected school boards mandate and ensure ALL elementary teachers are trained so that these core skills are taught with explicit phonics programs and require math fluency of all our students.

The mastery of all other subjects and academic achievement are dependent upon the successful

acquisition of these foundational skills.

Nonetheless, I am so very proud of the many achievements of my dedicated staff over the past four years. I sincerely thank the citizens of Arizona for allowing me the privilege of serving you and our precious children as Arizona’s Superintendent. It has been an honor and a blessing. May God bless our state and our students.

New art installation lights up north Peoria

Soon lighting up the northeast corner of Lake Pleasant Parkway and Happy Valley Road will be a new art installation titled Blooming Spire.

The sculpture is monumental in scale, measuring 50 feet tall by 12 feet wide and deep. With its welded tubes on vertical curves and pitch changes, the piece creates the effect of movement of a wavy, organic-based, desert form.

The cast fiberglass shapes are derived from the desert blooms and have a faceted texture with a frosted finish so they transmit, reflect and refract prismatic light. The Blooming Spire is based on the organic shapes of some of Arizona’s indigenous desert plants.

An essential element of the sculpture is its nighttime lighting. Not only acting as a beacon for passersby in their cars, but its beauty can be appreciated when experienced up close.

Zischke explores the cutting edge of sculpture, public art, mixed media and urban transformation.

The selection of Zischke involved a multi-step process with community input, a review and recommendation by the Arts Commission, and ultimately the City Council and Mayor’s approval.

Zischke has participated in many artist residencies in a variety of towns

and cities including, Belgrade, Serbia, Passy, France, and India. Zischke’s work is collected globally with selected exhibitions and collections that include the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Installation began on Nov. 5 and will be complete by mid-January.At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, the city will hold a dedication and lighting of the sculpture.

At that time, one Governing Board member supported demolition of the building. Instead, the majority of Governing Board members appointed a committee of district patrons to research the building’s structure and possible future uses to benefit students and make interior renovations to provide educational opportunities, while preserving the exterior. Historic preservation experts were consulted and they issued a report, which determined the building was worth saving.

Acacia District Councilmember Vicki Hunt commented on the designation.

Hunt said, “I’m extremely proud to have Peoria High School‘s Old Main added to the list of structures important in Peoria’s history. They represent some of the very early efforts of the pioneers who chose to settle here and remain as a reminder of the importantce of contining to celebrate our history.

“They also have meaning in the hearts of generations of Peorians who have worshipped in or gone to school at one of those buildings.

“My children went to school there (at Old Main), and I taught there, and it was and still is a part of our life, as it is for so many who still live here or come to visit the campus from time to time and admire its structural beauty. Old Main is the largest piece of public art that the city of Peoria has within its boundaries.”\ Hunt said, “I think the firm of Lescher, Kibbey and Mahoney built a building that was unusual for the time and place in which they constructed it.”

In late PUSD Superintendent Ira Murphy’s book, “The Privilege You Inherit,” he wrote how people reacted with awe when they saw the enormous building rising up from the agricultural fields.

From the city of Peoria’s own history journal published in 2004, Old Main is given lots of space with an anonymous quote from a contributor: “There is no better way to judge the intelligence of a community than by its action along the lines of education.”

Also from the city’s history notes: “At the time, many believed the three-story building designed to house the high school was both too large and too expensive for the modest-sized community. When constructed, it was the largest building in town. Planned in the Spanish Mission style, the building featured extravagant architectural elements of Moorish Spain.

In addition to three levels of classrooms, the high school boasted a basement and such 1922 luxuries as drinking fountains and indoor washrooms. The auditorium was also used for farmers’ meetings and church meetings.”

And so, with community diligence and support from the Governing Board, in 2011, Peoria Unified School District (PUSD) began the process of preserving Old Main with construction complete in 2014. Today, the building is home to Peoria Unified’s Medical, Engineering and Technology (MET) Professional Academy, which works to inspire, empower and shape future leaders, as well as the district’s non-traditional high school, Peoria Flex Academy.

Tamara Caraway and Jonathan Schmid, now with Avid Architects, worked on the design that restored the roof and interior of the site, alongside the building team from CORE Construction.

The building now joins Palo Verde Ruin, Peoria First Presbyterian Church and the Peoria Central School for sites within the city on the National Register of Historic Places.

SRP’s annual northside canal dry-up starts Friday Jan. 11, ends Feb. 10

If you live near a Salt River Project canal, you may be seeing more large trucks and personnel working along those waterways in the next month.

Portions of the Arizona, Grand and Crosscut canals on the north side of the Salt River will be drained for annual maintenance and construction activities.

Many of SRP’s northside irrigation customers will not receive water from the canals during the dry-up. The affected areas include Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria and north Tempe.

SRP crews will be working on the Arizona Canal from 68th Street to east of Mesa Drive and at two locations on the Grand Canal, from 24th Street to the junction with the Crosscut Canal, and from the Crosscut Canal junction to Thomas Road. During the northside dry-up, crews also will continue construction work associated with the Loop 202/South Mountain Freeway project that is being coordinated with the Arizona Department of Transportation and Connect 202 Partners LLC. The northside dry-up starts Friday, January 11 and continues through Sunday, February 10. The herding and relocation of the weed-eating white amur fish will be conducted during the first few days of the dry-up.

SRP is responsible for keeping its canal system in operating condition during normal water deliveries. Canal dry-ups allow SRP as well as other utilities and municipalities to perform construction and maintenance activities in and around the canals.

SRP crews also will use the northside dry-up to examine the canals and underwater structures to look for evidence of invasive adult quagga mussels. SRP performs dry-ups on a rotating sevenyear schedule. Dry-ups are performed annually on canal sections north side of the Salt River between early January and early February and on the south side of the Salt River annually between midNovember and mid-December.

Recreation restrictions and safety For their safety, people who use the canal banks for recreational activities should note the increased construction and maintenance activities along the canal banks during dry-ups.

Under no circumstances should residents enter the canals. Posted warning signs should be obeyed.

Leave white amur behind when fishing in canals Fishing in SRP-operated canals is legal with a valid Arizona fishing license.

It is illegal, however, to remove white amur fish from canals. If you catch a white amur, you must release it immediately, unharmed.

White amur have similar coloring on their backs to carp but feature several notable differences including a white underbelly, lack of barbels on their mouth and no boney spines in their dorsal fin.

If you witness someone removing white amur from the SRP canal system, please report the person to the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Operation Game Thief hotline at (800) 352-0700.

You can call this hotline to report any illegal fishing activities, including fishing with a net.

Other general rules •An urban fishing license is not valid in canals.

•Fishermen are responsible for adhering to all Arizona fishing regulations which includes rules about species of fish, catch limits, bait and number of poles.

•There is no regulation against night fishing.

SRP uses white amur as a natural alternative to machinery and chemicals to control weeds in canals.

Hundreds take the Polar Plunge

It only hurts for a little while. Try telling that to a 7-year-old as he swiftly climbs out of a bitterly cold swimming pool.

Such was the case with children and adults alike during the annual Polar Plunge sponsored by the city of Peoria.

Hundreds of all ages gathered early Saturday morning, January 5 at Sunrise Mountain High School swimming pool to jump into cold water and honor the pledges made to them on behalf of the city. Pledge money raised by divers at the Polar Plunge goes to a special fund to pay for swim lessons for underprivileged children.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Greg Sacco took the temperature of the water before swimmers dived in. It was a somewhat warm 45 degrees Farenheit. Not as cold as one would presume, right?

ing out of the water ready to jump right back in. But most said they would take the plunge again next year. Rachel Smart, 10, a student at Frontier Elementary School, said it was her first time taking the plunge, but promised she would be willing to repeat the feat.

Mark Selmer and Brandon Sheffert, public information officers for Peoria Fire Department and Peoria Police Department, respectively, took the plunge at the same time to show they are not just spokespersons, but actual participants for the cause. They both jumped in at a cool 6:45 a.m.

Community Services Director John Sefton, Police Chief Arthur Miller and Police Officer Bryan Rauzan, the school resource officer at Peoria High School, and Deputy Fire Chief Gary Barnard also took the plunge. Fire Chief Bobby Ruiz, however, decided to take the plunge into hot pancakes and sausage prepared by the volunteers with Peoria Firefighters Charities.

PFC volunteers stood at the ready to cook up hundreds of pancakes and sausages and served them free to everyone who attended the Polar Plunge,

swimmers, towel holders and just plain observers who wanted to watch for entertainment’s sake.

PFC spokesperson Ben Robinson said all members of the organization donate a certain amount each paycheck toward the fund to pay for cooking supplies. Manpower is provided with off-duty, no-pay hours. Throughout the year, the PFC gathers the funds to buy toys to deliver to families; this year, on Christmas Eve, 45 families were given donated toys out of Fire Station No. 191.

In April, the PFC sponsors a reading program coordinated with Peoria Unified School District and firefighters arrive at schools in fire trucks and read to third-grade classes. At the end of the program, the classes meet at Rio Vista Community Center, where the thirdgrade class that reads the most books is declared the winner of the reading program. The winning class receives an old fire boot with a message on the front that declares it the winner, and it sits in the winning classroom for the rest of the year.

team, he is used to cold water and chose to use a wet suit for his plunge. The dive team covers all five lakes in Maricopa County in its rescue missions.

There was no final tally available before press time of the number of donations received to pay for swim lessons for underprivileged children.

Todd LeDuc hopes to leave his mark on Monster Jam

Monster Energy truck driver Todd LeDuc is hoping to celebrate more than his birthday in mid-January. The threeyear Peoria resident is looking for a win at State Farm Stadium’s Monster Jam on Saturday, January 19.

“It’ll be fun to have a victory in front of my family,” LeDuc said enthusiastically.

The married father of 3-year-old and 5-year-old sons has been driving the Monster Energy truck around the world for three years. Earlier this year, on the European tour, he set world records for jumping over the most trucks in Germany and Amsterdam.

“That was cool to do,” he said. “I have two young boys and I’m living the dream by traveling the world, too.

It can’t get any better than that.”

Family is important to LeDuc. His career was a logical choice, considering

his father is Curt LeDuc, a legendary off-road racer. LeDuc won his first competition in 1984 at age 5 when he raced his plastic Big Wheel tricycle to victory in front of thousands of fans during an exhibition at one of his father’s off-road races in Canada.

In 1998, Todd started racing downhill mountain bikes and eventually won three California state championships. As a pro, he won two more and a national pro men’s downhill championship.

His motorsports career began in 2005 when he started co-driving with his father in his full-size class 8 truck in desert races. Again, the LeDucs prevailed, this time in the Best in the Desert racing series.

Now he’s driving monster trucks and having tableside smack talk with his family.

“We were all very competitive and pushing each other when we were growing up,” said LeDuc, whose family has been approached to do reality shows.

“It’s carried over into sports I’ve done.

I live for it. It’s a weird fix. It’s something that keeps me getting up in the morning and pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

“My brother and I have so much competition between us. Like at Thanksgiving dinner, we’d needle each other and say, ‘I had 14 wins. You only had 12.’

LeDuc, whose nickname is Malo Sapo (the “mean toad”), said he is grateful for the level at which he competes.

Touring the world has opened his mind to other cultures, and the importance of tolerance and appreciation.

“The whole world is a pretty cool place,” he added. “To see the different architecture and different cultures — like going to China for the first time — was amazing.

“I’m excited to see if we’re going to make some new stops this year and add stamps to my passport.”

He’s just as happy in the Valley, where he enjoys the close proximity to California, Las Vegas and Flagstaff.

“I love exploring this area,” LeDuc explained. “That’s one of the most fun parts about moving to a new city. I love maybe going to Out of Africa and up to Sedona, and taking my RZR out and going up to Crown King. It’s especially fun having kids. My 5-year-old is going to school. We practice his letters and words every day. It’s so much fun.

Passing on knowledge to your kids is really cool.”

LeDuc wants more than his children to look up to him. He wants to be a legend like Tom Meents of Maximum Destruction.

“When people talk about monster trucks, I want them to talk about me,” he said. “I want to keep traveling the world and keep winning more championships and doing what I can for the fans of Monster Jam. Knock on wood, I hope my kids would drive, also.”

AMSAF opens Member Project program to the Arizona public

Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF), a non-profit foundation focused on reducing Arizona motorcycle crashes and the number of distracted drivers, announces the formation of a novel membership program for the public.

Beginning this month, AMSAF began accepting membership applications from supporters and any individual or business that cares about reducing crashes and deaths on Arizona roadways.

“Membership in the new Member Project is not only an investment in enhancing driver and rider safety on Arizona roadways, but also is one of the most important ways an individual or business can support AMSAF – and in turn, fellow citizens – in its goal to reduce driver/rider crashes and fatalities and to help keep our citizens safe,” said Mick Degn, AMSAF’s executive director.

The Member Project allows members to share in AMSAF’s hands-on approach to safety and awareness.

The purpose of the membership program is to increase involvement in AMSAF with regard to promoting safety and sharing the road with all types of vehicular traffic. The public is encouraged to become involved with the organization and its cause and be more familiar with vehicular safety issues, prevention of roadway deaths and injuries and how to share the road with motorcycle riders and others.

Cybersecurity tips for small businesses From digital payments to social media to mobile ordering, technology has radically transformed how small business owners operate. At the same time, the speed of technology innovations has created an increasingly difficult challenge: how to protect a business from cyber threats.

Don’t forget mobile security The security of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets is also a key consideration in guarding against cyber threats. Regularly updating passcodes, only downloading applications and files from trusted sources, and avoiding any suspicious links or texts are all important to protecting your business from the risks of mobile technology. In addition, using anti-virus software for mobile devices helps protect them in places with public networks like airports, convention centers, and coffee shops.

Theater Works kicks off new year with ‘Desert Adventures’

TheaterWorks closes out the 2018-19 PuppetWorks season with the debut of an original production. “Desert Adventures” is on stage in the McMillin Theater on Tuesdays, February 2, 9 and 16, with performances at 10:30 a.m. and noon at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.

PuppetWorks shows have been described as cartoons brought to life due to the unique use of black light to make the puppets, scenery and even the audience glow in the dark.

Arizona is known for the Sonoran Desert, but how much do you know about all of the plants, animals and reptiles that call it home? Come learn about the wonders of the desert in this educational, immersive puppet performance. Desert Adventures features Arizona wildlife such as saguaro cacti,

Like the game, there will be loot drops and supply caches located in the library to help players create their forts. There will also be a Nerf War taking place, so players will have to build and protect their forts at the same time.

Participating players will have to use their problem-solving and teamwork skills to succeed. They can also cosplay as their favorite Fortnite character. The evening’s best costume will receive a prize.

The library will supply darts, goggles, construction supplies, pizza and beverages. Participants will need to bring their own Nerf gadget. AIA researching possible open division football playoffs

Arizona Interscholastic Association is researching ways to shake up the football playoffs by researching and requesting feedback on a possible open division.

The open division would pull the top eight teams, regardless of which conference they are in, being placed in one division to face off in the playoffs.

AIA is researching a possible formula, which would include computer rankings along with human rankings and scores, similar to what the National Collegiate Athletic Association uses for the College Football Playoff.

Coaches are split on how it would affect local schools in the West Valley.

division would come from 6A and 5A schools so they would get more schools to qualify for the playoffs,” Peoria head

The AIA is expected to vote on a possible proposal and could implement an open division as early as next season, but they are still researching a formula to use to rank the teams.

Possible formulas would be similar to what the NCAA used for the College Football playoff, which would include game results, strength of schedule and a committee to figure which eight teams would qualify.

One example of what it may have looked like this past season, depending on the format, would be taking the champion and runner-up in the top three divisions and two wildcard teams.

Babb said it would be hard for teams from lower conferences because they would struggle to compete with the larger schools.

“Honestly, from a 4A enrollment school, it will be tough,” Babb said. A lot of people think numbers don’t matter, but a 4A team that doesn’t recruit kids will struggle against a team with 2,500-3,500 total enrollment.”

Babb added, “An open division would give more 6A and 5A teams playoff opportunities, I am just not sure how most 4A schools with 1,000 less kids could compete week in and week out with teams that are 6A.”

As the Arizona Coyotes begin the second half of the season, struggling with injuries and offense over the past few games, they began a playoff push with a 5-0 victory over the New York Rangers Jan. 6 at Madison Square Garden.

The Coyotes started the second half of the season with a 3-1 loss to Edmonton January 2 and a 3-2 shootout loss to New Jersey January 4 before topping the Rangers.

As the Coyotes played their 42nd game of the season, Connor Garland scored two goals and goaltender Darcy Kuemper stopped all 23 shots he faced, as the Coyotes broke their three-game losing streak by sweeping the Rangers for the first time since 2000-2001.

Early in the second period, Garland struck again when Galchenyuk brought the puck across the red-line, passed to Nick Cousins, who fired a shot that bounced off Lundqvist where Garland deflected the puck into the back of the net.

“We want to play fast and get on teams,” said Garland, who led Arizona with seven shots on goal. “We did tonight. We weren’t happy with our third against New Jersey (on Friday), so we wanted a good bounceback game and it starts with the first period.

“The six-minute power play killed us, the second goal killed us too,” Tocchet said.

“We were in control of the game. A couple of people had the puck on their stick with no pressure and gave it away. It’s disappointing. You got six minutes of power play, you’ve got to make a shot.”

The Coyotes struggled with numerous injured players, but battled before falling in the shootout as Tocchet praised his team battling until the shootout.

The second mouse gets the cheese

Last week, we started a two-part series about the power of delayed selfgratification. Let’s do a quick review.

I found this concept in James Clear’s new book, “Atomic Habits.” I’ll quote from parts of his book to catch us up and conclude this series.

“In the 1960’s, a professor from Stanford University, Walter Mischel, began conducting a series of important psychological studies. During his experiments, Mischel and his team tested hundreds of children, most of them around the ages of 4 and 5 years old. The experiment began by bringing each child into a private room, sitting them down in a chair, and placing a marshmallow on the table in front of them.

“The researcher told the child he was going to leave the room and if the child did not eat the marshmallow while he was away, he or she would be rewarded with a second marshmallow. However, if the child decided to

eat the first one before the researcher came back, the child would not get a second marshmallow. The choice was simple. One treat right now or two treats later. The researcher left the room for 15 minutes.”

Well, we know how this turned out. Very few of the children waited 15 minutes. Most children ate the marshmallow right away. Known as the Marshmallow Experiment, the researchers followed each child for more than 40 years.

Do you know what they discovered? “The children who were willing to delay gratification and waited to receive the second marshmallow ended up having higher SAT scores, lower levels of substance abuse, lower likelihood of obesity, better responses to stress, better social skills as reported by their parents, and generally better scores in a range of other life measures. In other words, this series of experiments proved the ability to

This brings us to an interesting question: Did some of the children naturally have more self-control, and thus destined for success? Or can you learn to develop this important quality trait?

To determine the answer to this question, researchers at the University of Rochester decided to replicate the marshmallow experiment, but with an important twist. Before offering the child the marshmallow, the researchers split the children into two groups.

The first group was exposed to a series of unreliable experiences. For

example, the researcher gave the child a small box of crayons and promised to bring a bigger one, but never did.

Then the researcher gave the child a small sticker and promised to bring a better selection of stickers, but never did.

Meanwhile, the second group had very reliable experiences. They were promised better crayons and got them.

They were told about the better stickers and then they received them.

You can imagine the impact these experiences had on the marshmallow test. The children in the unreliable group had no reason to trust that the researchers would bring a second marshmallow and thus they didn’t wait very long to eat the first one.

Meanwhile, the children in the second group were training their brains to see delayed gratification as a positive.

promise and then delivered on it, the child’s brain registered two things: 1) waiting for gratification is worth it and 2) I have the capability to wait.

As a result, the second group waited an average of four times longer than the first group.

In other words, the child’s ability to delay gratification and display self-control was not a predetermined trait, but rather was impacted by the experiences and environment that surrounded them. In fact, the effects of the environment were almost instantaneous. Just a few minutes of reliable or unreliable experiences were enough to push the actions of each child in one direction or another.

If you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to find the ability to be disciplined instead of becoming distracted and doing what’s easy. The key takeaway here is we can train our ability to delay gratification.

We do it in the same way as the child and the researcher: by thinking, yes, it’s worth it to wait and yes, I have the capability to do this.

Learn from other’s mistakes, the second mouse gets the cheese. All the first mouse had to do was not live by impulse power. It was a life changer.

These meetings will discuss budgets and programs for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Annual Action Plan as well as use of HOME Program funds for Federal Fiscal Year 2019-2020.

The CDBG Annual Action Plan is required by HUD for annual funding under the guidelines of a CDBG entitlement city. The Annual Action Plan identifies how the City plans to use CDBG funds during the next fiscal year to meet the goals and objectives approved in the Five-Year Consolidated Plan.

The City of Peoria anticipates receiving approximately $850,000 CDBG and $160,000 HOME Program funds for Federal Fiscal Year 2019-2020. These funds are directed to the assistance of low and moderate income persons, primarily for City of Peoria residents. The City encourages the public to provide input on desired programs and activities for the use of these funds.
