Five years after joining the city of Glendale as the director of finance and technology, current Assistant City Manager Tom Duensing announced his resignation.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have tendered my resignation to (City Manager Kevin Phelps) effective Jan. 18, 2019,” Duensing said in a letter to council. “I have accepted a position at the city of Tempe and look forward to working in the community in which I have lived for over 32 years.”

DUENSING FROM 1 he was primarily responsible for identifying the long-term plan for turning around the city from near financial ruin as well as getting a $50 million fund balance.

Prior to joining Glendale, Duensing worked in Tempe and Maricopa for more than 18 years in various positions, including accounting supervisor, deputy finance director, city auditor, finance director and assistant city manager.

When he joined the city of Glendale, it had been experiencing a declining financial position since 2009, followed by a series of bond rating downgrades. He helped foster changes, including new policy direction and a strict savings plan which has resulted in the financial turnaround.

The city also received bond rating upgrades from Moody’s in January 2016 and April 2017, and from Standard & Poor’s in March 2016.

As one of his successes, Duensing

said, “I would say being part of putting this city on a positive financial trajectory and addressing significant employee turnover. Also, working on relationships with external stakeholders as well as getting this city on a goal of getting a $50 million fund balance goal, which is projected to be done by June 2020.”

He was hired as assistant city manager in February 2016. Since that time, he has assisted Phelps with most financial plans and changes to city processes and goals.

“Being part of the implementation of the city’s strategic plan was one thing I wish I could finish before I leave,” Duensing said. “This is extremely important to the employees providing services to the community and I wish I could have completed that.”

He added that while he is leaving, he enjoyed all aspects of the job.

“Over the past five years, I can honestly say that my team and I have given 100 percent to the residents, businesses, and employees of Glen-

dale. However, I have received much more in return, both personally and professionally,” Duensing said. “The two areas in which I take the most pride were addressing the significant financial challenges and addressing the employee compensation/turnover issues. What this city has accomplished in my time here is incredible.

It is because of your leadership that the issues have now turned to setting our strategic direction and fine tuning our financial stability.”

Joining the city during rough times, Duensing is credited with turning the city around and getting it on task for a strong future, but he will miss all aspects of the city.

“I will miss the friendships made and the feeling of accomplishment by me and others in this organization.

I started working in Glendale in a tumultuous time, and the things this city has accomplished over the past five years is extraordinary,” Duensing said. “The employees and council have been so supportive, and more important, appreciative. Profession-

ally, the past five years have been challenging, to say the least; however, I would not change the experience gained for anything. I am very lucky to have worked here.”

While he was quick to point to his successes, he said he will look back at his time in Glendale with pride.

“One of my biggest pet peeves is a “Monday morning quarterback,” and I try to not live in the past, only learn from it,” Duensing said. “Could I have done things better? Certainly. Do I have regrets? Absolutely none.”

Duensing has earned several credentials; he holds a B.S. in accounting, an M.B.A., and is a certified public accountant. In addition, he is a member of the Arizona City/County Management Association, the Government Finance Officers Association of Arizona, the Government Finance Officers Association and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

He also serves on the board of directors of the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Weiers, councilmembers list goals for 2019 Mayor Jerry Weiers, Ocotillo District Jamie Aldama and Sahuaro District Councilmember Ray Malnar responded to a request for their goals for 2019.

I’m so blessed to serve as Mayor to the people of Glendale, especially at such a thrilling time for our city. One of my goals is to continue to push for responsible financial decisions and infrastructure maintenance. Another is to continue to embrace our city motto and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of residents each and every day. I realize that my service as mayor means different things to many people, but I will continue to promote local business owners, respond to neighborhood concerns and support programs like Glendale Works that allows a homeless individual to earn a day’s wage. I’m excited for 2019 and continuing to work with council to ensure Glendale remains financially stable and see Glendale succeed and grow. At the same time, I resolve to do my best to not leave behind those less fortunate.

In your service Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor City of Glendale It’s been a busy four years while serving the great residents of Glendale and I look forward to serving them for the next four years. The council collectively has accomplished a significant amount of work for our citizens. In the last four years, the city paved a total of 210 miles; 28 miles in the Ocotillo District. Currently and going into 2019, the Ocotillo District will have an additional 22 miles paved. Making our streets safe for our citizens has been one of the council’s priorities. The city plans on continuing the pavement management plan and I will continue to support additional paving for the city and in the district.

In 2016, I requested the city to adopt an Alley Closer Program by request of Glendale citizens. City officials are currently closing alleys, which in turn, is reducing illegal dumping. This has also reduced blight in neighborhoods and has ensured safe and clean alleyways. Another important issue to me is code enforcement and keeping

our neighborhoods clean from blight.

This last year the council approved a code enforcement committee that will investigate current code ordinances and improve our code book to ensure we are protecting our beautiful city. The committee is made up of community members, councilmembers, city staff and business owners. I look forward to the results.

A 2019 goal of mine is to continue to be responsive to my constituents to ensure they have information that is important to them. In 2014, I implemented mobile office hours to meet with community members, sharing with them updates from my office. This last year I also held several meetings with business owners to hear their concerns and ideas. I’ll continue to be available to our citizens in the city and the district.

My mobile office hours will continue and are held every quarter on the first Monday of the month.

Our children and the youth in our community are important to me. I have engaged them in many ways by partnering with organizations in the district.

One event that I hold each year is the annual Hook a Kid on fishing event in April. This event promotes wellness in our community and encourages our youth to become more active in our parks and enjoy the outdoors. I look forward to the fifth annual event in 2019.

Citizens can hear more about the city and the district by viewing the Ocotillo District newsletter and by viewing the Glendale Today show. I am committed to the citizens of the city and look forward to serving the Ocotillo District in 2019.

My goals as a Glendale City Councilmember for 2019 and beyond will focus on areas that my constituents have let me know are most important to them.

First, street maintenance continues to be the No. 1 concern of citizens in my district and so it is my goal to continue our expedited street maintenance into 2019. I believe council will agree and budget the necessary funds to carry out this goal.

My second goal is to see improvement in the area of code compliance.

There is a high interest in consistent nuisance code compliance in the Sahuaro District.

The city council has formed a committee I will chair to begin the review process of our code. My goal is to ensure it is fair and that the city has the enforcement and collaboration tools in place to make it effective. I plan to have our first recommended code changes presented to council by late spring.

Third, I will be advocating for community revitalization in a couple neighborhoods in the district that need it the most. This may include improvements to parks, recreation facilities, infrastructure, lighting, public safety and rights of way.

As a council we continue to promote economic development that creates jobs and increases city revenues. I will support efforts that promote economic growth and my goal is to be actively engaged to help bring these developments to Glendale and the West Valley.

Last, I will continue to advocate for property taxes to remain at or below their current levels.

It was difficult to believe, but the adults were having at least as much fun as the children, and the adults had to do the math; keeping track of expenditures so as not to go over the predetermined budget.

West-MEC: tiny clinic, big difference

Construction students at Western Maricopa Education Center (WestMEC), a public career technical education district, partnered with local physician Dr. Jeannine Hinds to build a mobile clinic that provides free medical services to homeless families and at-risk youth.

During the holiday season, it’s easy to focus on the present with the biggest box, but, as the saying goes, good things come in small packages.

The same can be said for medical clinics.

“We want to develop a family in the community so when they see our clinic rolling by, everyone knows it’s going to be a great day,” Hinds said.

— began the new school year ready to learn how to operate power tools, frame houses, and design blueprints.

“My grandfather was a block layer and my dad ran heavy equipment for years. Construction runs in my blood,” Boulder Creek High School senior Jake Williams said.

Regardless of previous experience, Terry Brezina, the construction instructor, works with students on small-scale exercises before breaking the class into crews to build larger projects.

Over the years, West-MEC construction students have built a variety of structures, but Brezina, a veteran, has a heart for service and wanted the students to give back to the community.

“When I heard about the tiny houses that were being built downtown for the homeless, I reached out to Build us H.O.P.E. They referred me to Dr. Hinds, who’s been a real jewel through the whole process,” Brezina said.

Miniature ministry While Hinds was still an undergraduate, she ran campus crusades and college bible studies at Northwestern University. Her passion for helping others led her to create Oasis Ministries, a nonprofit organization that helps new

churches build up their infrastructure.

Though she found the work rewarding, something was missing.

“I’ve always felt that those who really need help will never come to the church or the clinic for whatever reason, they don’t have transportation, they don’t have money, they’re too embarrassed. I kept thinking, ‘The people who need us are out there, and we’re in here, so how do we get out there?’” Hinds said.

With her mission to take her faith beyond the walls of the church, she decided to take the show on the road.

A fan of the tiny house movement — where people live in mobile homes under 500 square fee — Hinds had a vision of bringing a mobile clinic to a park and providing free healthcare to homeless individuals, along with the opportunity to worship later in the day.

“We’re hoping to go out twice a month for now, a West Valley event and an East Valley event,” Hinds said.

However, some students were hesitant at the beginning.

“At first I didn’t think we could do it.

There’s a lot to think about--lives are at stake because this thing is going to be on the road,” Williams said.

Undoubtedly, there are many moving parts to a project like this: proper water storage, sanitation stations, and obtaining insurance, to name a few. But the students have managed to hone their new skills despite the challenges.

“It was just a regular trailer and we gutted it right down to the frame. The students really got into it,” Brezina laughed.

Hinds has made a point to support the students and give back to West-MEC. She taught a class on safety and trauma to the construction students and visits them three Fridays a month. Moreover, she met with the West-MEC medical assisting teachers to see how they can support each other in the future.

First fine dining vegan restaurant in Arizona to open this month in downtown Glendale

The very first fine dining vegan restaurant to grace the Arizona culinary scene, Casa Terra, will open in early January 2019 in the heart of downtown Glendale. Focusing on plant forward cuisine, the restaurant will serve authentic regional fare from Mexico and the Mediterranean, as well as unique fusion dishes from these areas. to a fine dining standard, Wyrick said the atmosphere and experience will be warm, welcoming and focused on the social aspect of enjoying an amazing meal. He will be utilizing classical and innovative cooking techniques to create vibrant, exciting, full flavor dishes that will appeal to any guest.

An accomplished chef, speaker, author, publisher and business owner, Wyrick has been serving the growing plant-based community for nearly 15 years. After transitioning to a vegan diet, he lost more than 100 pounds and completely reversed his diabetes.

This led him to co-authoring with Neal Barnard, M.D., the New York Times bestseller 21 Day Weightloss Kickstart.

Wyrick was the first vegan chef to teach in the famed Le Cordon Bleu program at Scottsdale Culinary Institute. Local church blessed with guardian angel

It started out as a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the northeast corner of Northview and 59th avenues.

When the congregation moved to a new location, it was purchased by the Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Phoenix to serve Glendale youth. Councilmember Jamie Aldama remembers spending many summers there in his youth.

Once a new Boys & Girls Club was near Harold Smith School south of Glendale Avenue, the building sat idle for almost three years. In 2015, it became a church called Living Faith Fellowship.

Pastor Lew Spear talked about the transition. Spear and his congregation met originally at 19th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road in Phoenix. That location was closer to where Spear lived — in Vistancia. But he and his

congregation “wanted to do something in the inner city.”

So, over the past three years, they have been trying to make the building usable.

“It took us quite a while,” Spear said.

“It was in pretty bad shape. The back parking lot was just an old dirt lot. We had to work the inside before we could use it.”

But, Spear said it has been a great experience, especially with the help of a city official.

Guardian angel appears “We’ve been very blessed and fortunate,” he said. “Jon Froke (former Glendale planning director) is an angel on our shoulders. We were so unaware of what we needed to do. Jon told us how to get ordinances and in compliance. There are under 100 in our congregation. He was very helpful to help us get what we needed to do to use it.

“This had been such an eyesore for so long. The city wanted us to put the parking lot in as soon as possible. From that point on, it’s been a lot of work, a lot of elbow grease.” see

LIVING FAITH FROM 10 Today, the building has a new roof, new stucco, new paint and gutters.

“We basically have saved up our money for one project at a time,” Spear said. “The Boys & Girls Club of Glendale has been very wonderful in helping us get in here.”

Spear said the goal is to have the gymnasium renovated by this summer. The congregation applied for and received grants to cover the cost of the work. Spear said everyone is hoping to conduct classes with youth to keep them off the street. He said he has contacted the superintendent at Glendale Elementary School District — just a couple blocks east on Northview Avenue — and explained how he and his congregation would like to work with the school district.

Along the way, Spear said when he and his congregation felt discouraged, Froke “just kept encouraging us. He was just a guiding light from the moment we purchased this building.”

From the major beehive in a back office to cobwebs hanging from the ceilings and roofline, Spear said his church members remained vigilant.

“Our small congregation really got a vision for doing this,” Spear said.

“Neighbors were very supportive.”

It is a calling for Spear, who said he and his wife both gave up six-figure careers to take on the project.

Renovations have begun on the gymnasium, and the pastor said with the help of volunteers from the congregation and grants to pay for materials and other labor, the hope is to have it ready by this summer so it can serve the youth, many of which could be students at the Glendale Elementary School District schools.

“I was a director at a college and my wife (Mary) is a computer analyst,” Spear said.

The Living Faith Fellowship has services at 10 a.m. each Sunday. Wednesday bible study will return Jan. 9. To learn more, call the church office at 623434-6406 or visit livingfaithphx.org.

PUSD adopts school safety resolution

The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board passed a resolution at its Dec. 12 regular meeting regarding mental health and school safety.

PUSD Superintendent Linda Palles Thompson said, “Safety is paramount and is one of our main areas of focus in our district’s Strategic Plan. We want to be sure that we are doing all we can to prevent a situation from ever happening, and to be well-prepared on how to respond should we ever need to do so.

This Safety Resolution is a step in the right direction.”

PUSD Governing Board President Monica Ceja-Martinez shared the following correspondence she received Dec. 11 from Catherine Broski, field director of March for Our Lives Arizona.

“Dear Board Member Ceja-Martinez, “Meg shared the good news with me that the mental health and school safety

resolution was passed! Congratulations, and thank you for working with us to be able to incorporate some of our ideas and clauses in addition to yours.

“This was the first school board resolution passed statewide that was proposed and/or influenced by March For Our Lives Arizona organizers, so thank you for sharing in that journey and accomplishment with us! Many students in our organization have read the Peoria resolution since it has been passed at the meeting, and we all agree that it is very well written. Do we have the permission of you and the Peoria Unified School Board to use some of that same language in the resolutions we are continuing to pass? I am not familiar with the procedure for something like this, so I wanted to ask you directly.

“Please let me know as soon as possible.”

Ceja-Martinez issued the following statement about the school safety resolution: “Student safety and well being is at

the core of the Peoria Unified Strategic Plan. Every pillar of the Strategic Plan is rooted in student safety and well-being. Mental health plays a critical role in student safety and well-being, as does every type of health.

“The Student Safety and Well Being Resolution is just one of the many ways the governing board and the district staff have publicly demonstrated our commitment to our students and our community.

“For me, the resolution declares, I know the problem and I am committed to addressing it. This is not a new commitment for me. I have been advocating for adequate resources for all students.

“This became very clear to me in 2013, my last year as a teacher in PUSD. That year the state Legislature made deep cuts to education, specifically to public school districts. Our governing board chose to reduce support staff and student services. This was devastating to the most vulnerable students who were most often the students with the greatest needs.

“I spent the past five years making sure these students were not forgotten.

Our resolution does just that and takes it a step further. Our resolution includes parents, family and community. We know that in order to support the whole child, we need everyone on board and we want all hands on deck. We are offering support to the whole community in whatever ways we are able; in the same way that parents, families and community members have supported us through a tough decade.

“The resolution was approved because student safety and well-being is a priority to all governing board members.

We may have differences of opinion on how to keep our communities safe and well, but the differences of opinion have led to robust debates, development of strategies we had not considered before and a deeper commitment to our shared goals.

“Thank you again for reaching out and bringing awareness to such an important topic.”

School Safety

• Safety is the number one priority in the Peoria Unified School District.

School Resource Officers

The Peoria Unified School District has long-standing relationships with the city of Glendale and city of Peoria police departments to ensure the safety procedures we have in place are met with their approval and expertise. We are also proud to partner with both of these police departments to provide School Resource Officers on all seven high school campuses. These SROs establish relationships at their respective feeder elementary schools and both Glendale and Peoria police departments will increase patrol in the immediate area at a school site, should they require it.

School emergencies

Emergency Operations Plan Peoria Unified has a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan that addresses school crisis situations.

Peoria Unified administrators have been trained and drill on each type of emergency situation – with and without students present. The district has a strong relationship with all local municipalities to ensure our Emergency Operations Plan is up-to-date and thorough. The plan is updated annually to allow the best outcome in the event of a crisis, with guidance and oversight by the police departments that serve our district.

Each school site will conduct the following practice with students and staff: see

o Monthly evacuation (fire) drills o Two lockdown drills per school year o Two shelter-in-place drills per school year o Two bus evacuation drills per year At the discretion of the site supervisor, drills may or may not be communicated to parents in advance.

To maintain the district’s laser focus on student and staff safety, specific details within the Emergency Operations Plan are not shared with the public.

Shelter-in-Place The shelter-in-place protocol provides safe refuge for students, staff and visitors at the school. This might include a situation taking place in the community, near the proximity of the school or a biohazard situation. During a shelterin-place, students and staff will remain indoors with the doors locked, as directed by either law enforcement or the school principal, although the educational learning environment may proceed as usual.

A Shelter-in-Place may be used for

the following incidents: o Bee swarm, assault/fight on campus, police activity in the community, social media threat, etc.

Lockdown Lockdowns may be issued in situations involving dangerous intruders or other incidents that may pose a threat to a student or staff’s immediate safety.

During a lockdown, all interior and exterior doors will be locked. Parents and visitors will not be allowed on campus during a lockdown.

A Lockdown may be used in the following incidents: o Intruder, violent parent or guest, weapon on campus, social media threat, bomb threat, etc.

Evacuation and relocation The district’s evacuation protocol includes everything from evacuating from a room to another room – evacuating from one building to another – evacuating from a building to the school grounds – or evacuating off-site to an alternate location.

In the event of an off-site evacuation, the district will implement its Reunification Plan and families will receive communication from the school district, advising them of the location and area in which they can pick up their child. Please note that proper identification will be required to further ensure a child’s safety.

The Emergency Operations Plan includes specific guidelines for relocating students with disabilities and non-English speaking students.

Communication during a school emergency Parents will be notified during a school crisis or shortly thereafter, depending on how long the event lasts. It is critically important that parents follow the district’s protocol in the event of an emergency. The school will not answer their phone during an emergency.

Parents and visitors will not be allowed on campus until the campus has been deemed safe.

Detailed information regarding the emergency situation will be shared on

the district’s website at www.peoriaunified.org/updates and will be updated as additional details become available.

Parents will also receive a phone, email and/or text message with details about the event. It is important to keep your contact information updated at your child’s school site. You can always check social media but remember that official district communication will always be shared directly on our website.

Please note that during a school crisis, the school may not answer the phone.

The staff’s number one priority is to ensure everyone’s safety on campus.

The district’s Communications and Public Relations Department will share information with families once it has been verified.

Depending on the type of crisis situation, students may be asked to text their parents and let them know that they are safe. In some crisis situations, students will not be allowed to use their phones.

Students visit colleges to explore future options

For some students, high school will consist of a social life, being out late and possibly getting into trouble. For others, it will be all about school, honors and advanced classes, and extracurricular activities. Regardless of what high school means to any student reading this, the four years of high school go by extremely fast, and many don’t think about what they are going to do after graduation.

It is so important to begin thinking about college and which college may be the right school for an individual.

Luckily, Apollo has multiple college field trips each school year to help students begin contemplating schools and careers, and Michael Hebert, the college and career specialist, elaborates on this.

Prepare your evidence Each day while in the courtroom, I hear cases ranging from a simple traffic citation to complicated civil lawsuits. In many of the cases, individuals choose to represent themselves and that is fine.

But, you now take the responsibility of preparing your case to be presented to the court. I always recommend getting advice from an attorney, but let me give you a few simple suggestions if you want to present the case yourself.

Often, one waits several weeks to see a judge because of the caseload; last year, my court heard more than 12,500 cases. When it is finally your day in court, be sure to show up prepared and on time. A few months ago, a lady appeared in court and wanted me to hear her traffic case from 2002. By now, the computer had added default fees, collection fees and suspended her license.

All of these extra fees could have been avoided if she had shown up on time.

Too often I hear, “Well, judge, I was running late this morning so I did not bring my evidence.”

Seriously, how are you going to present your case? You should have everything ready at least the day before.

Bring your reading glasses, I know this sounds silly. Oftentimes people come to court and want to present evidence and cannot read what they are trying to present. This happens so

Judge Donald Watts Manistee Justice Court frequently I went to the store and purchased some reading glasses to loan the litigants so the case could move forward.

Have an outline of what you want to say to the judge. Do not just start talking and assume you will remember all the points. I do a lot of public speaking and I always bring an outline.

Remember, this will probably be the first time the judge has heard your story; be prepared to tell everything in the time allowed.

Never say things such as, “Judge, just go read the police report later.”

This is not how to present your case.

The rule of thumb is simply take every thing about your case to court. There is no need to figure out what to take and not take; just take it all.

Lesson from the bench: Help the judge make the right decision by presenting your entire case in a wellthought-out manner.

Banner Health implements annual visitor restrictions at hospitals to prevent influenza In response to flu and respiratory virus season activity increasing, Banner Health has implemented visitor restrictions at all of its hospitals, beginning Jan. 2.

The following restrictions are being placed at all Banner Health hospitals: • Restricting visitors if they have a fever, cough, vomiting or diarrhea.

• Restricting visitors under the age of 13. Siblings, who do not have cold and flu symptoms, may visit a new baby on the Obstetrics unit or Pediatric unit. That child may be screened for illness by staff before being allowed to visit.

• Children 12 and under must be supervised by an adult at all times in public waiting areas and cafeterias.

• Visitors are highly encouraged to wash or sanitize hands frequently while at the hospital to prevent getting the flu or potentially spreading any illness.

“While we understand visitor restrictions can be difficult, they are necessary to prevent the spread of flu and other respiratory viruses within our hospitals. We appreciate everyone’s help in keeping our patients safe,’’ said Joan Ivaska, senior director of infection prevention at Banner Health.

All Banner Health employees, employed physicians, volunteers and students received a flu vaccination by Dec. 3, 2018. Those who were unable to receive the vaccination because of medical or religious reasons are required to wear a mask while in care settings (such as hospitals) during the flu season.

Banner Health encourages everyone over the age of 6 months to receive the flu vaccine to protect themselves and others from influenza. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for protection

NVS meets Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at North Canyon High School, and is directed by Eily Hallagan.

North Valley Symphonettes plays two to four concerts each school year.

Rehearsals focus on technique, theory, and scales, in addition to learning con-

cert music to provide a robust musical experience. Students interested in joining Symphonettes should contact Hallagan at: eilyh@northvalleysymphony. org.

Hallagan became the Symphonettes director at the beginning of this season, and feels that joining the North Valley Symphonettes is a positive supplemental experience for young orchestra students who are taking private lessons. As students progress in their musical training, they are encouraged to audition for the more advanced youth performance groups within the NVSO organization, North Valley Youth Strings or North Valley Youth Orchestra.

Coyotes struggling, but aim for playoff push

After 37 games, the Arizona Coyotes are in playoff contention on a season where they are eight wins ahead of the pace they were on in 2017-18.

And all this is with some of their key pieces not having played much if any this season.

Center Christian Dvorak has not played in a single game, starting goal-

tender Antti Raanta has been out since late November and is probably out for the season with a lower body injury.

Defenseman Michael Grabner has been out since Dec. 1 and Vinnie Hinostroza has been out since Dec. 6.

As they begin the second half of the season, the Coyotes are next to last in the Pacific Division at 16-19-2 but are only seven points out of a playoff spot.

Brad Richardson scored the tiebreaking goal with just over three minutes left in the game as the Coyotes broke their three-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over Colorado at Gila River Arena Dec. 22.

“I literally tried to shoot as quickly as I could on that (game-winning goal). It went through I think two of their guys’ legs, and I don’t think (Colorado’s Pavel Francouz) saw the shot at all,” Richardson said. “It just surprised him. It felt good to get that right after they scored.”

The Coyotes led 4-1 after the second period on goals by Stepan, Christian Fischer and Conor Garland. Colorado would tie the game up at four after goals

by Gabriel Landeskog, Alexander Kerfoot and Nathan MacKinnon in the first nine minutes of the third period.

“We were actually pretty calm (when Colorado rallied from down 4-1),” Garland said. “We knew we were going to get a little push there and try to get one. … [Richardson’s] goal was huge.”

Richardson would add another with just over one minute left in the game on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line to seal the win.

Conor Garland scored for the Coyotes (16-18-2), who have won two games in a row after losing three straight. Kuemper made 35 saves, including eight in overtime, and denied all three Sharks he faced in the shootout.

Galchenyuk ended a 16-game goal drought with his first multi-goal game since being acquired by Arizona in a trade from the Montreal Canadiens on June 15.

“It’s my job, obviously,” Galchenyuk said. “It was frustrating without scoring for such a long period of time, trying to find my game. I knew sooner or later it was going to come.

Stick to it, keep working. (Keller) made great plays to me. It was a great team win.”

any type of well-paying and interesting career, college is a necessity and many students do not always realize that.

“Like everything, some students take these trips for granted. Some students you can tell just take them for the day off, but the majority of students use it as a learning opportunity in trying to see if that’s what they want to do next year,” Hebert said. “From my experience, going to college or some form of learning is crucial now just because job experience doesn’t have that much weight compared to a degree or even certificate. That degree or certificate somewhat acts as a safety net in life for you.”

Sometimes, scheduling a college tour personally can become difficult or scary, and most students will procrastinate to do so until they forget.

That is why it is important to go on the trips and sign up when they are first announced.

“A lot of seniors think they have plenty of time left to think about the future, but graduation is getting closer by the day,” senior Janet Rodriguez said. “I thought a lot of seniors would have gone on the NAU field trip, but they didn’t.”

Alanís shared some advice for underclassmen who will very soon be able to go on those field trips.

“You should definitely go on the tours. A lot of students miss the opportunity, so go when you get the chance,” Alanís said.

The trips can be extremely beneficial to those who want to stay in state.

Hebert explained the purpose of the trips and why they are so critical to attend. “(The purpose of these trips) is for students to be able to get out and explore different opportunities that they can have for after high school, especially up to NAU and U of A, since they are a little bit farther away from home,” Hebert said. “I think it’s important for students to get the feel of and experience the different styles of living at each one.”

It makes the most sense for only upperclassmen to go on field trips like this, as they get the most out of it and tend to find it just as helpful as the college and career specialist would hope.

“I’ve been on one college field trip with the school and one with my family,” senior Viviana Alanís said. “I really liked NAU, so I applied and got accepted, but I also really like a college in Iowa that I’m going to go visit. The trips are nice because I have been to NAU, but some of my friends haven’t and they got the chance to see new campuses, as well as get a feel for what life is like outside of Phoenix.”

College is a vital stepping stone in becoming an adult and beginning a new life of independence. It helps with budgeting, time management, and much more. Furthermore, to have

OBITUARIES Drue Koyene

Drue Koyene Grant 92, of Glendale AZ went to be with Jesus December 5, 2018. She was born in west Texas on April 28,1926. She was preceded in death by son Koy and husband Travis. Survivors include, son Neil (Jeanne), daughter Karen Kamp (Larry), sister Onita Pond, 11 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren,4 great great grandchildren, who all dearly loved her. 1. Sort through your closets, cupboards and garage for items to sell.

2. Partner up with a neighbor or friend.

This is helpful to give each other breaks during the day.

3. Advertise your sale — ask us for our Yard Sale Special!

4. In your ad include the type of sale, (e.g., Yard Sale, Multi-Family Sale), date, time, address/cross streets, and be specific on prices for high dollar items. Popular items you can include: furniture, appliances, electronics, tools, yard equipment, designer/ children’s clothes and shoes, craft items, antiques, unique items and collectibles/ collections.

5. Place signs on major cross streets and on the corners leading into your neighborhood. Just a fat, solid black arrow on colorful poster board works fine.

6. Price your items. If having a Multi-Family sale, each family should have a different colored price tag. You can do a $1 table, $5 table, etc., to save time.

7. Money. Be prepared with change, including coins. Do not accept checks. Cash only!

8. Have electricity available to test items.

9. Be safe. Do not let anyone into your home. Take your phone outside with you Have an extra person relieve you occasionally.

10. If it’s warm, offer cold bottled water for sale to cool off your customers! Happy customers buy things!

11. After the sale, remove your signs and donate leftover items to a local charity.
