orking as a comedian is about being in the moment, Margaret Cho says. So when she brings her “psyCHO” tour around the world, she takes in the culture and the news of the host city so fans can relate. “I think the world has gotten a lot smaller in the way that we know what’s happening every minute of every day from Facebook and different social media,” she says. “It’s a good time to do a show and a good time to be traveling and going everywhere.” “Everywhere” includes the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, where she will perform October 17. She has fond memories of gigging in the Valley, specifically the Tempe Improv. WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

“I used to do shows in Tempe and Jimmy Eat World used to come,” Cho says with a laugh. “This is a long time ago. They were so sweet.” She promises her show will be a celebration of all things funny—including her late influences Joan Rivers and Robin Williams. “It’s my comedy family and my influences that’s something that I’m very excited about doing,” Cho says. “It’s going to be great. It’s really a great honor to have had such wonderful mentors and be able to share their stories through that.” Cho will create memories for her fans as well. Not just through the show, but she’ll marry a couple at each gig. “It’s really great,” she says. “It’s great to be able to celebrate (marriage equality),” she says. “I’ve been working on

marriage equality since 2004. It’s a good time for this kind of thing to happen—to celebrate all the hard work we’ve done.” Cho, who has been in the business since she was 14, explains that the name of her tour comes from the stereotype that women are “psycho.” “‘Psycho’ is always feminized—‘She’s a psycho b*tch,’” she says. “It’s a word that’s constantly used to demoralize women. That and ‘hysteria’ are feminine expressions of anger or perceptions of women. “That’s the way that language works. We don’t have nouns that are feminine and masculine like in German or other languages. There’s definitely sort of a tense and a way that you approach gender in language. In English it’s a lot more complicated. You have these different

impulses that are attached. It’s a way to keep the patriarchy in place.” Even though “psyCHO” has a deep meaning, she’s hoping that fans have a good time. “There’s a sense of urgency in that we need comedy to alleviate the suffering on the planet, and point to things that need attention,” she says. “My hope is that for people to see the way that comedy can change the world.”

rts season is back, and it’s time to get out there and celebrate all that is creative. And this year, Chandler Center for the Arts is doing it up big! The fall and winter season for Chandler Center for the Arts promises to be as ambitious and enjoyable as their previous years, if not bigger and better. Along with their dependable symphony series, there will be many other musical shows. In collaboration with Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, the center presents Plugged In on September 12, a showcase of the best bands and soloists of the youth music school. On the more classical front, the Russian Grand Ballet, made up of top dancers of the nation, is bringing their rendition of the world’s most famous ballet, “Swan Lake.” The performance, held on October 2, is sure to be dazzling.

For more local flavor, Chandler’s 16th Annual Mariachi Festival on October 3 highlights the vibrant music and dances of Mexico. Hype yourself up for the holiday season when Ballet Etudes presents Tchaikovsky’s other most-famous ballet, “The Nutcracker.” Clara’s magical journey, performed on November 27, is the perfect family show to discover the spirit of the season. On December 22, the distant drums of the circus will usher in the end of the year. Zoppé: An Italian Family Circus has brought wonder to audiences since 1842, and continues today. This annual tradition invites the local community to delight in an experience far different from any other ballet performance. The audience views the ballet under the dark Arizona sky, where they can witness an acclaimed performance—all for free! For many Arizona residents, this performance is their first exposure to live ballet, and it will certainly be one to remember. Ballet Arizona is under the direction of Ib Anderson, a former Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet. The School of Ballet Arizona is directed by Carlos Valcárcel, who has studied ballet his entire life. Guided by these two professionals, Ballet Arizona never ceases to impress Valley audiences. Each of the five performances will also feature a performance by Class

Act, one of Ballet Arizona’s education and outreach programs. Class Act gives local elementary school students the opportunity to study ballet and create a dance with assistance from the professional dancers of Ballet Arizona. All performances will begin 7 p.m. in different locations throughout the Valley, including Thursday, September 24 at Beardsley Park in Sun City West; Friday, September 25 at Estrella Lakeside Amphitheater in Goodyear; Saturday, September 26 at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix; Thursday, October 1 at Tempe Center for the Arts Amphitheater in Tempe; and Friday, October 2 at Fountain Park in Fountain Hills. hances are you’ve probably seen murals adorning the walls of many Downtown Phoenix establishments, but have you ever stopped to think about the faces behind the art? Hugo Medina is a painter, sculptor and works with metal fabrication. He is also one of the top muralists in Phoenix. He has seven murals in Downtown Phoenix alone and 40 total around the Valley, including the tribute to Wallace & Ladmo and the famous hands that adorn the Renaissance Hotel. He knew he wanted to be an artist at a young age. When he moved to the United States from Bolivia, he didn’t know the language. Art became his method of communicating with others, he says. While he enjoys working in the studio, he loves murals because they bring communities together. “I have two worlds you could say. Murals are very public and involve a lot of people. They’ve built an energy together, where my studio work is very intricate and personal. Murals are also a way of taking art out of the museum for everybody to see, instead of a select few that will go to galleries,” Medina says. Painting a mural is an adrenaline rush for Medina, who says he loves painting on large surfaces. The mural he painted at the Renaissance Hotel is 60 feet off the ground. He says being scared encourages him to try

new things with his art. “The moment I stop getting scared is the moment I should stop painting. You have to get scared. Just like when you’re working on a painting. If it’s too comfortable and you doing too much of the same thing, you don’t have emotion to it. You need that sense of fear,” Medina says. Carrie Marill is another Phoenix muralist who has been pursuing art her whole life. She moved to Phoenix in 2004 and loves the fact that Downtown has become a hub for the art community. “I love seeing the diversity of people and points of views. There [are] lots of open space and talented people who want to share their visual world with others,” Marill says. The first step to beginning a mural is figuring out how it can complement not just the building, but the community as well, Marill says. “I look at the building for a long time and see how it functions in the community— I let intuition be the guide and wait for the right image to take shape in my imagination,” Marill says. Her first mural was the bicyclist, “Pat,” on the Phoenix Flower Distribution building on Roosevelt and Second Street. This iconic Roosevelt Row mural was part of the Phoenix Rejuvenation project in 2010. Marill wanted to pay homage to the late Margaret Kilgallen, a San Francisco contemporary artist who painted a bicyclist mural in Los Angeles that was torn down during the Los Angeles County Museum of Art remodel.

She incorporated elements that were relevant for Downtown at the time, including the growing food scene, the public library, the increase in bicycle usage and the flower shop on which the mural was painted. “Kilgallen expressed a love for seeing the hand out in the world—so seeing the work of so many hands creating a mural, I hoped she’d have appreciated that,” Marill says. Marill feels most inspired by work made by women at home like quilts, weavings, rugs and embroidery. “Folk art from around the world inspires me like nothing else. I am a pattern and color seeker and folk art boldly revels in color and pattern,” Marill says. Her infatuation with color and pattern motivated her second mural, “For the Love of Color,” on the back of Combine Studios. “I collect colorful things and had a hand crocheted patterned piece hanging in my son’s room and one day saw it in a way I hadn’t seen before and re-imagined it giant up on a wall and thought Combine’s back wall would be perfect,” Marill says. Muralist Karl Addison grew up in Phoenix but has shared his murals all over the world. Without murals, he would have never had the opportunity to travel to places like Europe, Tokyo, Moscow, Israel, Mexico and Southeast Asia, Addison says. He believes Phoenix is the perfect place for murals because the community is so accepting of public art.

“If Downtown keeps being active with the art scene in all capacity, [it’s] giving back to culture and helping define who and what Phoenix is all about. It’s interesting to promote a city locally, but also have it represented out in the world with its artists,” Addison says. Addison has four murals total in the Phoenix, three solo works and one collaboration. His first piece, “Francesca,” is located on McDowell and First Street. Addison got in contact with Roosevelt Row and they pointed him in the direction of Christ Nieto, a building owner in Downtown Phoenix. “We created a friendship and I have been lucky enough to work with him on a couple different projects,” Addison says. Murals are different from studio work because there are so many outside factors that go into planning them, Addison says. “In my process the building architecture takes a big part of inspiration, [it’s] the idea of painting with a wall instead of on top of it. Its’ a challenge mentally and physically to create work of art on this scale and size,” Addison says. If you are interested in becoming a skilled artist, Addison suggests making time to learn everything you can. “Work with other artists and be part of your local community. When you are trying to produce work, let yourself have a higher failure rate to learn from. Not every piece has to be a masterpiece or get a thousand likes on social media,” Addison says. With five films in the franchise, the niche is now firmly established. The cerebral edge of the story themes and exceptional action/stunts are well-paced throughout while eye-candy locations worldwide lend international flair. All IMF team members are now in place with strong individual nuanced characterizations. My personal favorite IMF team member is Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn. “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is one heck of a ride! The next installment has been given the green light and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” receives my “must see” rating.

RANDY’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH:

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

Based on the television show of the same name from the 1960’s, the story follows two government agents trying to stop nuclear destruction. Henry Cavill, the American agent, is perfectly cast opposite Armie Hammer, the Russian agent. The duo are teamed up against their will, and their on-screen love/hate relationship is pure magic. Alicia Vikander is extremely likable as the female protagonist and plays a much different role than in “Ex Machina.” From the action sequences to the subtle comedy, to the terrific on-screen chemistry between the entire cast, the entire film is non-stop fun. Perfect set design and costuming add to a truly retro feel. JOSEPH’S MOVIE OF THE MONTH:

“She’s Funny That Way”

“She’s Funny That Way” is a delightfully charming throwback, authentically resembling the simple-yettwisted screwball comedies of yesteryear that seem to be all but extinct. Boasting an all-star cast that includes Imogen Poots and Owen Wilson and a quickwitted screenplay by legendary writer/director Peter Bogdanovich, the flick feels like it has been plucked right out of the golden age of Hollywood. It is bouncy, boisterous and—best of all—squirrels-to-the-nuts from beginning to end, running on the crazy coincidences that create chaos in its amusingly neurotic characters’ lives.

tan Robinson, lead film writer for The Entertainer!, as well as a board of directors member of the Phoenix Film Critics Society, passed away in August, but not before leaving a lasting impression on the motion picture industry. Born October 25, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, Robinson’s love affair with film started in 1960 when, at the age of 14, he saw director George Pal’s cinematic adaptation of H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine.” After serving his country in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer at Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam, he went on to attend the Community Film Workshop of Chicago and secured an internship in the news department of NBC’s WMAQ-TV Chicago that led to a permanent position as a film editor. Robinson’s career in film production began in 1980 with an internship on the set of “The Blues Brothers.” Robinson relocated in 1986 to Central Florida, where he worked as an assistant director and transportation captain for several projects, including “The Adventures of Huck Finn,” “Passenger 57,” “My Girl” and “To Die For,” as well as “The Adventures of Superboy” television series. In 1997, Robinson arrived in Phoenix, where he would eventually retire from film production but remain involved in the industry as a film critic and columnist for a number of outlets, including AZ Weekly and The Entertainer! in print, as well as Examiner.com and ScreenScene. org online. “I am living my dream,” Robinson said in a 2010 video audition that earned him a 30-second spot that

he musicians in The Boxmasters, featuring Billy Bob “Bud” Thornton, call their band “old school.” They believe in the quality of the lyrics, a stellar live show and gorgeous harmonies. Something Thornton and bandmate J.D. Andrew draw from decades past. “We’re a ‘60s rock ‘n’ rollinfluenced band,” Andrew says. “Like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Eagles. Add that with The Beatles and The Animals and other British-based bands, and take a bit of Big Star from Memphis from the early ‘70s, and that’s what we sound like these days.” The Boxmasters have carried that sound over into its double album, Somewhere Down the Road and its digital record, Providence, both of which the band will promote during a September 15 show at Livewire in Scottsdale. “We’re very proud of it,” Thornton says of the album. ‘It’s frustrating, though, when you take care to really try to write good lyrics and write meaningful songs and the lyrics get lost with people.

“I guess it’s always been that way to a certain degree. They hear the sound of the song and they like it for that reason. It’s always good when people appreciate lyrics. I always did. It’s pretty important to me.” These days, Thornton says, he is inspired by his wife and kids—along with his grandkids, as a bandmate shouts in the background of the phone conversation. Thornton clears his throat and goes back to The Boxmasters’ influences. “They inspire me,” he says of his family. “Also, there’s always something political or sociological that inspires me to write things. Sometimes you just want to write a plain rock ‘n’ roll song. Boy-girl songs will always be around. “But political songs are tough to write. Any time I wrote lyrics that are political in nature, they’re usually not from the point of view of a political party. I’m kind of down the middle, to tell you the truth. I call myself a ‘radical moderate.’ I take whatever I believe is the best [part] of any side. I guess I would probably say I comment on social topics more than political.” Although The Boxmasters have an intense touring schedule, there’s always time for fun. During a stop in Grand

Rapids, Michigan, they took time out to bowl with Def Leppard. “For some reason it got in the press that we played against Def Leppard. That isn’t true,” Thornton says with a laugh. “It was only Joe (Elliott) and Rick (Allen). We were both off and we ran into them at the hotel. They said, ‘What are you guys up to?’ We told them we were going bowling and invited them to come. The teams were mixed up. It was a good time.” But the primary focus of the next couple months is the tour and the albums. Somewhere Down the Road captures the best sides of The Boxmasters. “The first one has a lot of songs that are great to play live,” Andrew says. “It’s an upbeat, ‘60s jangle rock and pop record. We dive into a few songs from the second album, which has a very dark, Americana sound. The upbeat jangle rock is better for an audience and the divey clubs that we’re playing—except for Livewire.”

Participants will submit one dish for the World Chef Challenge competition

General admission is $40 for Scottsdale Chamber members and $55 for non-members. Arizona Restaurant Week is the most wonderful time of the year for Valley foodies

The fall 2015 Arizona Restaurant Week will take place from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27 and will feature delicious meal after delicious meal. For either $33 or $44, patrons at any of the participating restaurants will be able to try a three or four course dinner that perfectly exemplifies the flavors and attitudes of the restaurant. For some, this is an affordable way to eat at an upscale restaurant. For others, this is a fun way to see how their favorite chefs can flex their creative muscles by trying new dishes. remember the first time I had a macaron. It was about four years ago, and as I bit into the flakey outside and the gooey inside, I remember being overcome with decadence. The fragile and delicious treats seemed nearly impossible to make and their price point proved that to be nearly true. After one summer of macaron overload, they became an “every so often” indulgence and one that I still hold in esteem. It’s no secret that this time of year, anything and everything icy, cold and chilled sounds delicious and refreshing around noontime. Considering my past with macarons and the fact that I fight (and lose) a craving for an 8:30 p.m. bowl of ice cream nearly every night, a Sunday afternoon ice cream macaron sandwich sounded like it was in order. I have heard so much about these frozen treats at 43rd Express in West Phoenix that I knew I had to head there to try them. Offered three options for the macaron flavor and about ten options of the ice cream flavor, I chose the taro macaron with cookies n’ cream ice cream, and after waiting for them to be freshly

made, an appreciated nice touch, I inspected and drooled over my loot.

THE CONSENSUS:

While these treats were certainly cold, creamy and refreshing, they were unfortunately not for me. As with 90 percent of the foods that I don’t love, the texture was too much. The size of the macarons (about three inches in diameter) meant that the inside was extra gooey. That, plus the creaminess of the nearly two inches of ice cream, was a lot for me. The flavors were strong and decadent, but yet again, just a bit too decadent. Both the taro and cookies n’ cream were rich and creamy, and while they did complement each other, the richness was just not up my alley. I have heard many wonderful reviews for 43rd Express and their macaron ice cream sandwiches and I am sure that there are people out there that would love them. Unfortunately, I am just too texturally challenged to be one of those people.

CHRISTINA’S ACCOUNT:

As Andrew and I approach age 30, we’ve realized we’re becoming old because of one major change in our lives—we’re now doing food-and-drink pairing dinners with our friends. Much like learning to golf and complaining that nightclubs are too noisy to have a decent conversation, dinner parties are indicative of our ever-increasing age. I shudder to think of all of the politics and current events we discussed during our last culinary adventure, which quickly devolved into confirming each others’ beliefs and coming to the totally sane conclusion that everyone outside of that dining room at the moment was insane. Oh, and we also had Indian food—or at least white-girl-made Indian butter chicken, courtesy of yours truly. “This looks delicious!” said one friend as he took a bite. “And it IS delicious.” Then he probably said something about Bernie Sanders or the Animas River mine spill. So basically, because I can go to the international food store and buy some garam masala, I’m clearly an Indian food master. Or so I thought... It’s kind of amazing what happens when you challenge your own “facts.” The fact that I was an Indian culinary master worthy of a Michelin Star was obliterated when our taste buds (and the rest of our bodies, coincidentally) went to Scottsdale’s Tandoori Times. The ornately-decorated, dimly-lit spot has a lived-in feel and, as we discovered, lived-in food. These are recipes that have been fine-tuned to perfection by Tandoori Times’ chefs, and it became apparent bite after bite. We started with the somosa choley, a best-selling appetizer that boasts an exotic mix of mint, garbanzo beans, potatoes and

green peas, and served with two soft-yetcrusty pastries. It was a flavor explosion. Fresh, bright and nuanced, the vegetarian app was filling on its own, but I could see Andrew was itching for meat. Seriously. Andrew literally breaks out in hives if he doesn’t have some sort of meat every hour on the hour. Our sleep schedule is thoroughly screwed because of his incredibly dumb disease. Chicken nuggets and lunch meat won’t suffice. Fish can take a dive. Andrew needs real meat to survive, and it only counts if it has placed four hooves on land. So naturally we ordered the lamb seekh kabob, because the cuter the animal, the more delicious! The minced, marinated lamb and Indian spices were combined and placed in the restaurant’s trademark tandoor to cook. Sure, it basically amounts to a meatball, but it’s one of the most interesting meatballs you’re bound to try. And you can’t be two white people in an Indian restaurant if you don’t get the chicken tikka masala, which made my butter chicken look like prison food. (Honestly, was that mold or cilantro!?) Tandoori Times’ chicken tikka masala boasts incredible depth of flavor and impossibly creamy sauce. I was delighted with the meal and embarrassed of my attempt to even try cooking Indian food. I drowned my shame in a trio of desserts, made especially for us by Tandoori Times. Of the ras malai, kheer and gulab juman desserts, the kheer was my favorite. Served with almond and raisins, the rice pudding was familiar enough to satisfy and exotic enough to intrigue. You can try my version of kheer, Snack Pack Tapioca Pudding, at my next dinner party. It’s currently marinating in the back of our fridge.

ANDREW’S ACCOUNT:

As Christina said, we are rapidly aging toward the inevitable dark void of oblivion, so we’ve taken up dinner parties with our friends to distract ourselves. On weekends we gather to cook, drink, eat and be merry. Because something needs to fill the void. Even if for only a little while. “We’re all going to die one day,” I thought while assisting Christina in preparing her meal for our friends. But you know what? We are all going to die. So do what we all do and stuff that thought way back into the far recesses of your mind, only to be overwhelmed by it again when a nearmiss car accident makes us face mortality. For now, let’s eat well and partyyyy! At these get-togethers of ours, a fair amount of wine and spirits are imbibed and often eloquent people like Christina think their intellects hold up to the buzz. In her mind, Christina gives an impassioned argument about income inequality and the dying middle class. In actuality, Christina spills her merlot on one of our guests while slurring, “This Ronald Trump guy. I don’t… I don’t like him. Oooh, cheese!” This month we decided to let our aprons and livers have a break and we headed to Tandoori Times, a vibrant little Indian eatery tucked back in an upscale Scottsdale strip mall. Our first taste was the delicious somosa choley. Think of the samosa as an Indian knish, but with peas of both the green and chick variety. As delicious as the app was, I had meat on the mind. It had been a while since my last serving and

my hands were shaking while trying to read the menu. I reached into the secret stash of warm beef jerky in my pocket and placed a piece between my lip and gums. Christina masochistically chose the chicken tikka masala, a dish very similar to one her specialties, butter chicken. For the uninitiated, that is not the name of Paula Deen’s memoirs, but braised poultry in a fragrant curry sauce. It’s not great for you, but hey, we’re all going to be nothingness eventually. Tandoori Times’ chicken tikka masala was decidedly healthier than Christina’s version. The chicken was cooked beautifully in the restaurant’s traditional clay oven called a tandoor. The incredible depth of flavor of the curry is difficult to describe. It’s a rollercoaster of sweet, creamy, tart and even floral flavors that makes it difficult to lay the fork down. And I didn’t. Why would I? We’re all going to die. Ultimately, I followed my heart and it led me to meat. The lamb seekh kabob was an amazing spiced ball of lamb meat and served with lemon. Use the lemon. I can’t stress that enough. The lamb is good enough on its own, but that pop of acid really brings out the flavors of the meat. Dat curry though. Christina wins best dish this round. No excuses from me this time—that chicken tikka masala is seriously good. I look forward to trying some more Indian cuisine and I think I’ll choose Tandoori Times again. You should too because, hey, you might not be here tomorrow.

It’s very nontraditional but you get a tamale taste and feel when you’re eating it. It’s a housemade masa topped with a roasted poblano hash. Then we use our carnitas, which are made with our Sierra Nevada beer, an over easy egg on top and Guajillo sauce. The Guajillo sauce has a little bit of spice. It’s got a lot of distinct flavors in it from the poblano hash to the red chile masa. The carnitas we make with beer and oranges, so you’re going to get tiny citrus notes, I think they pair really well with the IPA. Why is Blasted Barley Beer Co. the best place for craft beer lovers? I don’t know if there’s a best place for craft beer. I think it’s what we surround it with. We’re always playing, we’re always retooling our beers and we’re constantly growing. ere you not a fan of May’s Wine Walk? Perhaps this month’s Urban Ale Trail is more your style! Downtown Phoenix Inc. presents the first beer-centric version of the walk—a self-guided tour for those who show a growing interest in craft beer. The event includes nearly 30 bars and restaurants on or near the light rail, allowing participants to go at their own pace, in any order, to try a variety of craft beers at local hot spots. Each bar or restaurant will feature 4 to 6 ounce pours for $2-$3 each and a free snack to pair with them. Because who wants beer without a yummy snack to go with it? Hula’s Modern Tiki is serving four types of Kona Brewing Co. brews with a Hawaiian ceviche, while Arrogant Butcher will feature three local beers and their popular pretzels and provolone fondue. Angel’s Trumpet Ale House will let

guests choose samples from any of its 31 taps, and the relatively new Mother Bunch Brewing, also letting trekkers choose from its 20 taps. Look for “Beer Here” signs marking the participating venues along the route. Instead of wine glasses this time, the first 300 beer lovers to arrive at the District American Kitchen and Wine Bar will receive a commemorative 64 ounce growler that can be filled with beer at restaurants and liquor stores. Get out there early if you want this door buster though, because they will go fast! You can look for your favorite brews on the event’s website to start planning your Ale Trail early!

Toto, Yes pairing actually makes perfect sense

hen booking agents paired prog rockers Yes with the softer sounds of Toto for a summer tour, some saw the lineup as odd. Toto’s guitarist/vocalist Steve Lukather acknowledges this, but says the partnership works on several levels. Namely, both bands have recently suffered the deaths of core members—Yes’ Chris Squire and Toto’s Mike Porcaro. “They lost Chris tragically,” says Lukather of the musician, who died in Arizona of leukemia. “He was one of the greatest musicians ever. We lost our brother, Mike, couple years go. There are no egos on the tour.” Although they play different genres of music, Toto and Yes have utmost respect for each other, says Lukather, who goes by the nickname “Luke.” Those differences actually make for the perfect tour. “We just wanted to be a little more eclectic,” Lukather says. “It was so exciting. Chris was supposed to get better and he didn’t. It’s really tough for their camp. It was like us losing Jeff Porcaro, our leader, our guy. We just lost Mike, we’ve lost two.”

Throughout the run, which includes a Friday, September 4, show at The Pool at Talking Stick, Yes and Toto are paying tribute to their fallen musicians. “If I was to go (die), I’d like the guys to continue playing music,” he says. “Not playing isn’t going to bring me back. “If anything, we celebrate the memories. Mike was a legend. Chris was one of the greatest musicians ever. We have to carry on with respect. All this does is remind me that every day is a blessing. We have to make the most of it. I’m a very sensitive cat, but I also have a great sense of humor.” His silliness shines during the second half of the interview, which focused on Toto’s new album Toto XIV, which hits stores March 20. It is one of the band’s most critically acclaimed albums. “We’re not used to good reviews,” he says. “We always got our asses kicked. They compared us to punk music, which is like comparing a massive rump steak to a vegetarian. You can’t put the two on the same plate. “We survived it all. It’s been a great long career. It’s a rollercoaster ride. One we had to hang on to without being flung out from the top. We all went to school together. There’s something we have that very few people understand.”

Toto’s album and shows have been successful thanks to megahits like “Africa,” “Rosanna” and “Hold the Line.” While Toto’s sound has evolved, the touring routine has not. “That’s real,” he says. “Nobody is showing up to see what my (butt) looks like in my jeans, although I’ve been told that it looks OK in my jeans. I don’t look bad for my age. I have a young girlfriend, he, he, he. I’m not a creep. You just never know who’s going to like you and who you’re going to like.” The Pool at Talking Stick gig is a rarity for Toto, who primarily tours overseas. But he’s excited to bring the noise to the United States “We’re bringing it,” he says. “The band’s tight. We’re having fun. We haven’t toured the U.S. as much, so we’re kind of fresh meat, if you will, for the lost era.”

f you go to a polo match in Santa Barbara or Palm Springs, you might see a crowd of 400 people, the vast majority white and at least 70, and half with oxygen tanks. That’s not the case for the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower, says Jason Rose, co-founder of the event. The annual polo party will return to WestWorld of Scottsdale for its fifth year Saturday, October 24, but it’s more than just polo matches that draw crowds. Since its launch, the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships has become the most-attended polo event in the United States, drawing 11,969 guests last year, and what Rose says is the most interesting in the world. “…No one has the crowds that we do, and no one has the funky atmosphere that we do where we create numerous events within events,” Rose says. Attractions from past years that will make an appearance again this year, including Canine Couture, a dog fashion show; the Longest Catwalk Fashion Show with a runway stretching nearly 200 yards; the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Preview; the 2016 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show preview; and the Larsen Live Art Auction. Something new for this year is High Tea presented by The Phoenician. It will be a tea party like never before and guests will be able to sip tea out of the resort’s traditional fine china while taking in a WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

polo match and the scenery of the McDowell Mountains. Another new event is the It’s a Date! Singles Auction—the second year of the event, but the first at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. Valley bachelors and bachelorettes will be auctioned off in the Saguaro Hotel Lounge with all proceeds contributed to The Care Fund, a charity organization dedicated to helping families with mortgage or rent payments when experiencing financial hardship due to unforeseen childhood medical hardship. Lastly, the event will introduce ballroom dancing and a Phoenix Symphony performance. “It’s kind of wacky, it’s kind of classy, and it’s kind of fun––all at the same time,” Rose says. “We have three matches on the event upcoming. And so for one [period], we’re shutting down the announcer, we’re shutting down the DJ and the only thing that you’ll hear is symphony. And that’s either gonna be really, really boring or really cool. But it’s gonna be fun and different and something you can’t experience anywhere else in the United States.” The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships may seem like a strange assortment of events, but it works. “This whole thing’s been an experiment: can you do polo this way?” Rose asks. “…[The United States Polo Association has] been stunned about this crazy setup that we’ve put on in the desert with no polo heritage and [that we] are able to draw the crowds and put on the event that we do.”

alloween is just around the corner and Southern California theme parks are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year. This season, you will find everything from trick-or-treating with Mickey Mouse at the “Happiest Place on Earth,” to a walk-through attraction modeled after the “Walking Dead” television series at Universal Studios. But if you’re looking for something different, head out to Long Beach for Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor. Dark Harbor takes place on and around the Queen Mary. The ship is already known to be haunted, so what better place to hold one of the L.A.-area’s largest events? Take a tour of the ship during the day and spend the night onboard the 1936 ocean liner in one of the guest rooms. On select nights in October, the area comes alive with haunted walkthrough attractions, spooky shows and a cast of fiendish characters. Despite competition from the area’s larger theme parks, this is the best overall themed and cohesive Halloween event. All of the mazes, sideshows and “monsters” walking the grounds are related to one another. No other event ties it all together the way Dark Harbor does.

While the mazes never fail to impress, it’s the talent that makes the event memorable. Each evening as the gates open, The Captain welcomes you to the mayhem. You will find him later on wandering the grounds with Half Hatchet Henry, Graceful Gale, Samuel the Savage and Scary Mary. The always humorously frightful Ringmaster is always around for a photo. Mazes are typically based on legends from the ship. This year the attractions include “Lullaby,” “Soulmate” and “B340” (all three are on the ship). In the old Spruce Goose dome is “Circus,” filled with oddities and tricks. The remnants of “Deadrise” can be found on the midway, and in the old shopping area lies “Vooddoo Village.” Entertainment options and upcharge attractions also exist, all of which are worth experiencing. Our advice: skip the general admission and do the VIP experience. You will get the much needed front-of-the-line access to the mazes, access to a special lounge above the event, delicious snacks and a selection of beverages. Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor opens October 1 and runs through November 1 on select nights. Note: The event may be too scary for children under 13.

TOO BIG FOR TEMPE? How exactly did Summer Ends Music Festival land Kanye West?

empe Beach Park has really stepped up its game over the last few years. Just take March’s Pot of Gold Music Festival, which brought four days packed with artists like Bastille, Kendrick Lamar and Fall Out Boy. The field is set for another festival this month—the second annual Summer Ends Music Festival. The last date of the fourday fest particularly stands out, finishing with a 90 minute set by the one-and-only Kanye West. That night’s lineup was booked with direction from Kanye West’s representative, according to Tom Lapenna, owner of Luckyman Concerts, which organized the festival. Luckyman had previously promoted Kanye during his 2013 Yeezus tour stop at US Airways Center. “This year we opted to go after one headliner each day that we knew would have a great draw and then add support acts that complement the headliner,” Lapenna says. To say it’s exciting for the festival to book such a huge artist for

a somewhat unlikely venue is an understatement, especially considering Variety reported last year that a booking for Kanye ranges from $400,000 to $600,000 and he headlined the international festival phenomenon Glastonbury this year. However they convinced him to come to our little “beach,” we’re glad they did. And now, the fest’s two most exciting days come at a discounted price. As a package, Luckyman is selling day 2 (which includes talent like J. Cole and Big Sean) and day 3 together (featuring Kanye, Pusha T and more) for $129.50. Kanye draws attention wherever he goes, so here’s to hoping that this is just the beginning of even more great artists to come.

Equally important, Devine stresses how his personal life has changed from having found his friends on the road. “I see it as a sort of community,” Devine continues. “We’re also kind of a sounding board for each other...not only in music, but somewhat in life. I think we’re all better people for having each other. “I didn’t know Manchester Orchestra in any aspect going into the tour. March 2007 we had never met. By May 2007 we were on a path toward being lifelong friends who attend each other’s weddings. I probably talk to Andy (Hull, Manchester Orchestra) in some capacity once a day about something. It is something special. Sometimes things just sync up like that and you’re really lucky when you find it. It sometimes only happens once or twice in a career.”

uthority Zero’s 20th anniversary has been bittersweet. This year the band, which melds punk, ska and reggae, embraced its two-decade career with a sold-out show at Club Red. But a gig in San Antonio earlier this summer didn’t bode so well. The Mesa-based act’s van and trailer with production equipment, amps, guitars, drums, mics, merchandise, backdrop and computers were stolen. The vehicle was later recovered, but the goods were long gone. “We felt violated,” says singer Jason DeVore via telephone in between East Coast tour stops. “It was kind of a hit, but we’re getting through it.” The healing process has been bolstered by a Go Fund Me crowdfunding page that is seeking $30,000 in donations. As of August 24, 429 donors gave $19,648 to Authority Zero to help defray the costs of replacing its equipment. “People have been super responsive and overly gracious,” DeVore says. “We’ve had donations from all over the world, including Prague. We’re extremely humbled.” DeVore peppers his conversation with the word “humbled.” He’s honored that Authority Zero is still around. The band made its mark on the national scene in 2001, when it signed to Atlantic Records subsidiary Lava Records. Its first album, A Passage in Time, sold more than 250,000 copies worldwide. Major labels didn’t suit Authority Zero, though. It went indie with the collection 12:34, which was released by Big Panda in 2007. Recordings followed on Suburban Noize Records and Hardline Entertainment. “When we actually got our record deal in 2001, that was a pretty high point WWW.ENTERTAINERMAG.COM

With the old-school days, there was an innocence to it.” The vocalist says Authority Zero has achieved what it has by maintaining a positive attitude and continually improving. “You do realize the accomplishments you have,” he says. “You embrace those and keep on trying to grow as a band and musician. It’s in my blood, obviously. I love music in general. Being able to do what I love for a living—being with my buddies, seeing kids show us love and support—it keeps you motivated.” The hometown adoration helps as well. After heading around the world

and back, Authority Zero—which also includes guitarist Brandon Landelius, bassist Mike Spero and drummer Christopher Dalley—will perform a local show at Marquee Theatre on Saturday, September 19. “We’ve got a lot of friends playing it,” he says about the support acts. “It’s going to be a big celebratory show. We’ve been gone all summer.” After the show, the band will pack up again, this time to California where it will work on a new album. Although the music won’t hit stores until next year, fans can expect to see a live CD and DVD of its 20th anniversary show later this year. A Canadian tour is slated for November and December. Authority Zero’s schedule is

packed, but DeVore wouldn’t have it any other way. “Being here right now, still, is a big highlight of my career,” DeVore explains “There are times you realize how long it’s been: ‘Man, it’s been 20 years for sure.’ You can feel it. Time goes by at the blink of an eye, but it’s been a heck of a ride.”

eeling vulnerable after a breakup of a six-year relationship, Ricky Martin was ready to work on a new album. But this time, he wasn’t going to be shackled to a schedule or record company demands for eight months. The process was to change. “I talked to my record label and said, ‘You know what? I’m sorry. Not this time. I’m going to walk in the studio whenever I have something to say. Not something to say, but when I’m ready to lay some tracks because I already have some amazing ideas,’” Martin recalls via telephone from Australia, where he was mentoring fledgling singers on the country’s version of “The Voice.” “So I went on the road. I said ‘Whenever I’m ready, I’m just going to tell my manager I’m ready to rent a studio. Let’s go in and lay the vocals and lay the tracks.’” The fruit of his labor is “A Quien Quiera Escuchar” (or “To Anyone Who Will Listen), a 10- to 16-song collection, depending on which version is purchased. Martin says he felt vindicated. The collection debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 25,000 copies in its first week, which is quite a feat for a foreign-language album. It reached No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, earning Martin his sixth chart-

topping album, and topped the Latin Pop Albums chart. Critics raved about “A Quien Quiera Escuchar” as well. “According to the sales and the reaction of the media and the critics, apparently this is the way to go from now on,” Martin says. “It’s a very honest CD, very transparent. I was very vulnerable. Every time I walked in the studio I was completely open. I could hear it in the interpretation. I’m very, very pleased with this. It’s one of my favorite productions.” Elaborating on the content, he said it was “all about me, me, me, me, me.” “It was all about me and allowing myself to feel and to put on paper my emotions and the things I’ve been through. The ups and down, the emotional ups and downs, as I call them. I broke up with a six-year relationship that I had a few years ago.” The father of two boys, Martin said writing about himself was “very liberating, very cathartic.” Martin hasn’t released an Englishlanguage album since 2005 and that will change, he says. “I have already tracks recorded. Pretty much all I have to do is fine tune and mix and present it. Once again, I don’t want to feel the pressure of ‘You have to go into the studio right now and do it in English.’ I do have the need to do music, but I cannot do it based on a schedule or

a clock. The record company’s fine with it. I’m working on it little by little. I cannot wait to talk about it.” Confident with his shows as well, Martin will perform in Phoenix and Tucson in September. He is known for his high-energy concerts that feature a slew of back-up dancers, stellar musicians and a few surprises here and there. He says he will continue that tradition. “There are amazing musicians and dancers,” he says. “It’s going to be fun. Be ready for carnival.” With Martin happy about his music, he wants fans to follow suit. “I think the most important thing for me is for people to leave the venue happy—as simple as that. I want them to forget; forget about all the issues in life and, for the next hour and 45, hour and 50, allow yourself to be. Don’t feel judged. Just dance if you feel like dancing. Cry if you feel like crying. Just be. That’s the idea.”

We chatted with Charlie Zeiler, head barman at The Mix Up Bar, to learn what he drinks and asked about a delicious cocktail to enjoy with the warm weather. The Entertainer!: What is your number one pet peeve when working? Zeiler: When you work in the hotel industry, you are never really closed to the public. We are here to serve our patrons, and we are happy to do so, but it can feel a little hectic when you aren’t able to prep your bar the way you would like before opening each day. What is your go-to drink when elsewhere? I am a fan of pretty much all spirits, so if they are busy I will just have something

neat or on the rocks. If they are not too busy, I order an old fashioned, negroni or a last word, which is equal parts gin, chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and fresh lime juice. What does ordering rosé say about a person? Rosé is one of the most popular drinks of the summer. It is light and refreshing while still packing a tasty punch which makes it perfect for lounging by the pool or relaxing outside on an Arizona night. I would say that rosé is having a moment right now in the cocktail industry. What do you like about this drink, the Smoking Berries? The Smoking Berries cocktail on our menu has mezcal and tequila, which I love and all kinds of flavors going on—fruity, smoky, citrus. [It’s] nicely balanced and it’s refreshing. Zedd no longer has to ‘work’ a day in his life Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

orn into a musical family, Anton Zaslavski never thought he would earn a living as a DJ. Now known professionally as Zedd, he has become a hot commodity in the world of electro-house music. “I would never guessed in a million years I would be a DJ, or would live off producing songs for me and other people,” he says with a laugh. “I knew I was going to have a career in music because that’s the only thing I loved in my life. When you really love something, you really go find a way to make it work.” The Russian musician has been playing in a band since his early teens. Even then, he knew he was going to be a full-time musician. “Both of my parents are musicians,” he says. “They gave piano lessons, guitar lessons, bass lessons and drum lessons. My dad then switched to a music teacher in school. There are a lot of jobs you can do if you love music, if you truly believe in that being your path.” He has definitely made it work. Zedd’s 2013 weepy single, “Clarity,” featuring English singer-songwriter Foxes, sold 2.2 million copies. Earlier this year he released a collaboration with Selena Gomez, “I Want You to Know,” which he co-wrote with Ryan Tedder of One Republic and KDrew. The single, which appears on his album True Colors, landed high on the Billboard singles chart, too. “With ‘Clarity,’ I knew that the song had the potential [to] become what it

actually became,” Zedd says via telephone from his Los Angeles home. “A year before it came out, I sent it to the label as a simple demo. I said, ‘This is a huge hit.’ I didn’t actually mean it’s going to be a hit. I thought it had everything a song needs to become a huge cultural song that has a huge impact.” The song was released but it took nine months before it really gained traction. “I Want You to Know,” however, immediately made an impact. Since the Gomez-fronted song, Zedd released a second single from True Colors, “Beautiful Now” featuring Jon Bellion, and the follow up “Papercut” with Troye Sivan. “‘Beautiful Now’ was really interesting to see live,” Zedd says about the reaction from the audience. “I knew that song was going to be huge. I love it. I’m my own judge there. I remember playing it out. People usually rarely react [to] a song well if they don’t know it yet. But that song has always been a huge song live. I think that says a lot.” Although it was a favorite at shows, radio station executives thought otherwise and said the song wasn’t a hit. Over time, programmers changed their minds when it started receiving good feedback. “Right now it’s my favorite song to play out live,” Zedd says. “To see the entire stadium chant with me, that is really magical.” Zedd shared his love for the song via the CMT Awards when he collaborated with Lady Antebellum and its song “Long Stretch of Love.”

“That was a lot of fun to do,” he says. “I love the guys from Lady Antebellum. I was on the phone with them a bunch of times to create that mashup between our songs, which are very different—different worlds, different temps, different keys— and I had to make sure the transition was natural and works fine. “It was a real pleasure working with them. It’s really refreshing to see artists being really huge and so grounded and intelligent and musical. I really loved working with them.” Zedd fans can hear a special version of “Beautiful Now” when he performs at the Mesa Amphitheatre on Saturday, September 12. “I’m super excited for this entire tour,” he says. “I think a lot of these shows, especially for college kids, they probably have never had as much production as I’m going to bring in. I think they will be happy to see what I have planned.” Growing up with musical parents has been a boon to Zedd. He starts his songs on the piano, with a simple chord progression. He records a piano-vocal demo before he starts the song. Then, he produces and mixes it before he tries to find the right vocalist. “Sometimes I record just one and I know it’s right,” he says. “Sometimes I have to record four or five different singers. I tell everyone that I just need to hear different voices so I know what I want, so anyone isn’t disappointed.” When he listens to vocalists sing his songs during the recording phase, he looks for someone who makes the song relatable. “I think it is very important for everyone to make relatable music,” Zedd says. “That’s why I take so much time to find the right vocalist. If it’s sung by somebody who can’t translate a message,

you don’t believe it. If you don’t believe it, you don’t like it. “I don’t like music that sounds manufactured. ‘Clarity’ almost didn’t make it on the album because I couldn’t find a singer who translated the message the way I wanted it. I still felt like it was a hit. I wasn’t happy with it until I found Foxes and felt like she was almost crying when she was singing the song.” These days, Zedd is planning his life a year in advance. He wants to head to territories he’s rarely visited, including Asia, which was one of his biggest markets this year. He’s also planning stops in South Africa and South America. “I’m also hungry and writing music again,” Zedd explains. “I’m writing new ideas and new songs. Whether that is being an album or just singles or an EP don’t know yet. I just finished my album, I don’t have a plan for the next one yet. The one thing I’ll never stop doing is writing music.” Understandably so. Zedd says it’s been a “frustrating and hard path” to get to where he is today. “I’ve played concerts since I was 6 or 7,” he says. “I’ve been in bands since I was 12. We’ve played so many gigs for absolutely no money. We paid money to play gigs. We would drive ourselves to the shows and back, sleep on floors. We did that not for money but because that was our passion. That’s what we love to do. At least we don’t ‘work.’ That’s the big advantage of doing what you love.”

As summer closes, deals are being made and artists are filling their calendars with fall tour dates. What that means for the dance scene in Phoenix is that the dust kicked up this summer season is far from settling. The Entertainer! had a chance to sit down with Thomas Turner, owner of Valley show promoter Relentless Beats, to discuss what would be coming our way in the next few months.

The Entertainer!: The dance scene in Arizona has grown significantly, even in the last year. How has Relentless Beats contributed to this growth? Turner: I think the growth you’ve seen in Arizona’s dance scene is propelled by consistent promotions in the many years before this. In North America it as grown a ton, but in the Arizona scene I think it’s because it’s been culminating for many years. Peers of ours have been running the companies like us for as long, but may have gotten to building festivals like the one’s we are doing sooner, and we’ve just gotten to that [in Arizona]. This month you have Mad Decent Block Party. How is Mad Decent this year going to compare to last and what can we expect this time around? The production that is coming is much larger than last year. You’ve got Major Lazer, who has done some amazing production around their brand. We’ve really

stepped it up. The line-up is even stronger this year. The ticket sales are pacing where it’s going to be a much larger event than it was last year too. Where will this fall music festival season be taking us? What will we see? Well we just announced Odesza for Decadence, which will be a two day festival. It will be the biggest lineup we’ve ever had in Arizona for an electronic-based event. Global Dance Festival will have an outstanding line-up over at Tempe Beach Park, which I feel is the best venue in the city, so we’re lucky to be there on November 20. And to answer your question, the fall is going to see more significant talent in the market in a condensed period of time than we’ve ever seen.
