9 NONTRADITIONAL Thanksgiving meals for both sides of Tampa Bay

Maybe your flight out of town has been canceled. Maybe you want to avoid the hassle of cooking and cleaning. Maybe you’re just rolling solo this year. If you’re looking for something different this Thanksgiving, we’re here to help.

We’ve gathered a few noteworthy restaurants offering dine-in and to-go meals that don’t just feature the typical turkey dinner — some suited for larger parties, others for small groups or a solo eater.

Roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, green beans and sweet potatoes — all classic staples eaten on the fourth Thursday of November every year. But don’t sleep on Chinese-style barbecue, freshly grilled pork cheeks at your table or slowcooked lamb shoulder. For those not eating meat this year, we’ve also included a vegetarian and a vegan option.

Please check with the restaurant or organization for the most up-to-date hours and information. Everything is subject to change.

China Yuan

The Cantonese-style restaurant off North Armenia Avenue in Tampa is known for live seafood offerings like Dungeness crab and Maine lobster, Chinese-style bar-

becue and dim sum before 3 p.m.

Plan on China Yuan closing around 8 or 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Usually closed on Wednesdays, they will be open normal business hours, 11 a.m.-10 p.m., on Nov. 26. 813-936-7388; chinayuanrestaurant.com

Kpot

The rapidly growing hot pot and Korean barbecue chain with two Tampa Bay locations, Brandon and St. Petersburg, offers a hands-on, choose-your-own-ad-

venture eating experience. If you opt for Korean barbecue, expect to grill beef bulgogi, pork cheek, king oyster mushrooms and spicy baby octopus over an open flame at your table. Prefer hot pot? You’ll simmer similar and more varied options in the broth of your choice. It’s fun, communal — and you can do both for the full experience. Both locations will be offering dinner all day. Kpot serves beer, cocktails, sake, soju and

Times’ new Food Hub to expand coverage of bay area food scene

The Tampa Bay Times is launching an initiative dedicated to growing one of our most popular topic areas. In January we will roll out the Food Hub, a four-person team covering Tampa Bay’s dynamic and expanding food scene.

Building on the strong foundation our food critic, Helen Freund, has established, we will broaden our scope of reporting and aim to get more engaged with the community in several ways. Restaurants are key to our area’s business and tourism development, and food brings together and reflects our community in so many ways. It was natural that we’d make it a core coverage area.

Helen will continue to be instrumental in shaping our local food coverage and producing food enterprise stories as our senior food and dining critic.

Senior engagement editor Meaghan Habuda will join the hub as assistant food and dining edi-

tor. She will lead the hub’s engagement strategy and own a beat focused on budget-friendly dining, mom-and-pop eateries and underthe-radar neighborhood spots.

Food and dining reporter Evan Rodriguez will focus on breaking restaurant news, closely tracking openings and closings, and other major news.

I will serve as our food and dining editor. In addition to occasionally reporting, I’ll lead the team’s innovation efforts, from developing a podcast to coordinating community events.

“Our new hub underscores our commitment to covering the region’s vibrant food scene — everything from food trucks to fine dining,” said Mark Katches, the Times’ editor and vice president. “We’re essentially doubling down on food. It’s an area of high interest for our readers, who gobble this stuff up.”

In addition to four core staffers, the hub will feature contributions from around the newsroom.

With a robust team dedicated to this beat, we’re aiming to become the No. 1 source for food coverage in the area. Got a tip? Email

New fine-dining steakhouse coming to Ybor City in 2026

Tommy’s Chophouse, a fine-dining steakhouse, plans to open in early 2026 on the ground floor of the Kress Contemporary building at 1622 E. Seventh Ave. in Ybor City.

Restaurateur Kenneth Emery’s Fudi Group will run the spot. It also operates West Ybor Barterhouse and Ocean Ink Raw Bar in Ybor, and Burwell’s Stone Fire Grill in Charleston, South Carolina.

“I started my career here in Florida at 23, and this is me coming home,” Emery said in a news release.

Curtis Brown, executive chef at Ocean Ink Raw Bar, will help open Tommy’s.

Tommy’s Chophouse plans to focus on lesser-known cuts of beef such as hanger and shoulder filet steaks, while still offering traditional cuts and highlighting wagyu.

The spot will join a slew of other restaurants headed to Ybor, including the soon-toopen new location for Mise en Place and the just-announced Papi’s.

Restaurant and lounge Papi’s to open in Ybor City

Papi’s, a modern American restaurant with a Spanish twist, is set to open before New Year’s Eve at 1708-1710 E. Seventh Ave. in Ybor City.

Restaurateur Robert George, who helped open the Ybor location of national frozen drink chain Fat Tuesday in 2024, said Papi’s will serve smashburgers, Latininspired small plates and cocktails.

The large, two-story space aims to be a restaurant by day and a lounge by night, staying open until 3 a.m. The second floor will

be available for private events and parties. Emilio Lopez will handle day-to-day operations as part owner and general manager.

George said Papi’s wants to meld an energetic vibe with Ybor’s Spanish heritage.

“We’re trying to take and be inspired by who does everything best in the industry,” George said. “We’re going to make sure that everything, from the menu to the design, the music and the culture, is inspired by Ybor.”

Veteran Tampa Bay area chef Dorsey dies

was placed under hospice care at home.

Veteran Tampa Bay chef Ted Dorsey has died after being diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in April.

Dorsey died Nov. 6. He was 43.

The cancer diagnosis came a month after he and his business partner Teddy Skiadiotis opened Sunshine City Tavern on Fourth Street North in St. Petersburg. They shuttered the restaurant in August as day-to-day operations became unmanageable, Dorsey told the St. Pete Catalyst.

“Taste for Ted.” The event was a love letter from the city to Dorsey, organizer and Dorsey’s longtime friend Brooke Palmer Kuhl said. The benefit raised $45,000 for Dorsey and his children, Jackson and Samantha.

Dorsey was kind and compassionate, with children he loved and adored, and parents who were incredibly proud of him, Hambrick said.

In early July, Dorsey’s sister Mandy Hambrick started a GoFundMe because Dorsey needed financial help to care for his two children and himself, and ended up raising over $51,000. By October, Dorsey’s condition had rapidly worsened, and he

That month, Dorsey’s chef friends, former colleagues and collaborators hosted a benefit dinner at St. Petersburg’s Il Ritorno restaurant,

other up-and-coming chefs,” said Hambrick. His “smile was bright, and his bear hugs were tight. Both will be greatly missed.”

“He cooked many meals for many families in this area,” said David Benstock, owner and executive chef of Il Ritorno. “He loved food, and he was passionate about food.”

Dorsey worked in several kitchens in Tampa Bay over the years: Boca Kitchen Bar and Market, Castile in St. Pete Beach’s Hotel Zamora, Ciro’s Speakeasy and Supper Club in Tampa, The Club at Treasure Island, CopperFish Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar, The Mill and Sonata.

“He was always super kind to me and really warm and cool, took care of me whenever I went to his restaurants,” said fellow chef Rob Reinsmith, of St. Petersburg’s Wild Child

and Slim Charmer. “He shaped a lot of younger cooks in this area.”

Reinsmith said he and Dorsey met almost 12 years ago, when the chef community in the area was much smaller.

Dorsey was born in Atlanta and grew up in Clearwater and Tampa. As a cook, he was mentored by longtime Mise en Place chef Marty Blitz.

“He was a guy that could lead a kitchen, but he would wash the dishes,” said Kuhl. “Salt of the earth, would just give you the last dollar he had in his pocket.”

Dorsey is survived by his children, his sister and his mother.

Times food and dining critic Helen Freund contributed to this report.

Creator of Tampa’s

50,000-item

viral felt grocery store to return with new shop

The last time British artist Lucy Sparrow came to Tampa Bay, in January 2022, she had quite a bit of baggage.

Specifically, 50,000 handmade felt replicas of real groceries for “Tampa Fresh Foods,” a pop-up market at Water Street that went absolutely bonkers on TikTok. Shoppers lined up for hours to tour Sparrow’s 3,000-square-foot store and buy felt versions of canned goods, Tampa cigars, smiling pieces of citrus and loaves of Cuban bread. Sparrow designed each item and worked with a team of assis-

tants to bring them to life.

Nearly four years after “Tampa Fresh Foods,” the artist has announced a new concept at the FloridaRama immersive art museum in St. Petersburg: “Lucy Sparrow’s Quick Shop.” About 13,000 handmade items will be featured, including many inspired by the Sunshine State.

“The installation brings Lucy’s beloved hand-crafted felt creations to FloridaRAMA, mixing the immersive exhibit’s celebration of all things wacky Florida with her whimsical take on everyday items made entirely of felt,” a news release said.

The installation opens to the public on Friday, though FloridaRama members will be able to preview the pop-up a day earlier. Access is included with museum admission.

Sparrow has felted a New York City-style bodega, a “felt imaginarium” in Beijing, China, and a 6-meterlong installation for Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee lunch at Buckingham Palace. In August, over 20,000 people came to see her “Bourdon Street Chippy” exhibit in London. The show featured more than 65,000 items inspired by British fish-and-chip shops.

Side Splitters Comedy Club coming to St. Petersburg

The Sundial, an upscale retail plaza in downtown St. Petersburg, is rapidly evolving into an entertainment complex. And that is no laughing matter.

Side Splitters Comedy Club, based in Tampa, will open a location in the Sundial, between the Forbici Modern Italian restaurant

scheduled to open early next year and the AMC Theater.

Owner Brian Thompson signed a lease for a roughly 6,000-square-foot space near bustling Beach Drive last month, and build-out began Oct. 29.

Side Splitters has brought nationally touring comedy acts to the Carrollwood area for over 32 years. The St. Petersburg location

should open in six to nine months and attract the same level of talent.

“Once you really get to experience it, comedy becomes addictive to people,” Thompson said. “Live entertainment is a beautiful thing. It’s been around for a long time, and it’s up to us to keep it alive.”

He said the St. Petersburg location is slightly larger than the Tampa club, which often hosts A-list comics.

For example, Louis C.K., who has won six Emmys and three Grammys, had a show there Oct. 30.

magic number” that ensures a “certain level of act.” He also said he would “pull out all the stops” and “open up with a bang.”

The Sundial club will seat about 250. Thompson called that “kind of the

Thompson has established relationships with several prominent comedians over the years and is contemplating how he can build upon the Tampa location’s success in St. Petersburg.

“Downtown St. Pete is such a fun little getaway for them, especially for a bunch of these New York comics in the wintertime,” he said. “It should be an exciting thing for everybody.”

Side Splitters St. Pete will occupy a second-level space at the Sundial that formerly housed the Locale Market. Mike Connor, CEO of Paradise Ventures and the complex’s co-owner, said it would feature an indoor-outdoor bar.

The Tampa club’s location in a Carrollwood strip mall requires planning and driving. Connor noted that people can “just walk up” and

catch a show at the Sundial.

“This is going to be, I think, much more thought out as far as the design and circulation,” he said. “For us, I think it’s such a great use for the center.”

Thompson said the internet and social media have opened the door for an influx of one-night acts. Many sell out in Tampa and could now pick up additional bookings in St. Petersburg. Providing additional stage time and increasing ticket sales could also attract more A-listers.

Pop-up shows are a new trend in the comedy world and offer “our local guys a place to work.” However, Thompson said, a “dedicated club that can bring in world-class talent regularly is something that every city needs.”

“People in St. Pete like to step out. They love their city,” he said. “And bringing that to them is something I believe people are really going to get behind.”

There are also several synergistic opportunities for Side Splitters at the Sundial. The owners of Forbici, which has a popular Tampa location, have already proposed a partnership.

Side Splitters, which will offer light food, could serve the restaurant’s pizzas, Thompson said. He and Connor believe the club aligns with the vision for a reimagined Sundial.

Forbici is expected to open concurrently with Drift, a long-awaited courtyard bar and gathering space, in January or Febru-

ary. Connor shared details on the latter in July after clearing a legal hurdle with the theater’s owners, a global investment firm.

Sundial and the surrounding downtown waterfront will “be such a fun area” for comics to come to and spend a weekend, Thompson said.

“The beautiful thing about this is we won’t lose our personal touch,” he said.

“When you’re in a tight room and everybody’s laughing and everybody’s on the same page, there’s an energy that you can’t duplicate outside of the top clubs. It’s just something you got to experience.”
