Why you need vitamin E — and how to get your daily dose

You get your fill of vitamins C and D by eating oranges and soaking in a little sun each day, which is good for your body and mind. Small habits like these can have a big impact on your overall health and help you feel your best each day. However, vitamins C and D aren’t the only vitamins your body needs to thrive. Take vitamin E, for example. This overlooked vitamin is essential to our well-being, and yet many people don’t know anything about it. Let’s take a moment to learn about this super vitamin, and what you can do to get your daily intake.

What are the benefits of vitamin E?

Vitamin E, like vitamin C, is an antioxidant and therefore helps improve immunity levels. Here are the possible benefits of vitamin E, and how it can specifically enhance your health.

• Fights summer colds: Winter isn’t the only time you can catch a cold. In the summer, vitamin E can boost your immunity to prevent sickness during the warmer months.

• Extends cell life: What’s the secret to aging well? While there are many factors that can influence aging, vitamin E can extend cell life to keep skin in great shape for years.

• Repairs damaged cells: With vitamin E oil, you can also repair damaged cells. Specifically, vitamin E can be used to treat sunburns and scars.

• May reduce risk of heart disease and cancer: There’s still much to be discovered about vitamin E. Currently, doctors and scientists are testing whether vitamin E can reduce the risk of serious health conditions, like heart disease and cancer.

• Reduces risk of cataracts and other eye issues: Maintain eye health and prevent serious eye diseases by getting your daily intake of vitamin E.

• May slow down cognitive decline: Studies have found that a higher intake of vitamin E in older individuals can reduce cognitive decline and can even slow down the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s.

How can I get more vitamin E in my diet?

The U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin E in individuals 14 years and older is 15 milligrams. Instead of taking supplements to get the recommended daily dosage, however, save your money and add vitaminrich foods to your diet. “The simplest way to increase your vitamin E intake is to follow a healthy diet that focuses on eating vitamin E-rich vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and lean forms of protein,” said Lyssie Lakatos, a registered dietitian. Lakatos lists these five foods as examples of what you can include in your vitamin E-rich meal plan.

• Pistachios: A protein-packed snack, pistachios are also a rich source of vitamin E you can take on the go.

• Spinach: When preparing salads, toss some spinach into the mix. This dark, leafy green is also high in calcium.

• Eggs: Eggs contain vitamin E and are also packed with omega-3s and vitamins like B12 and D.

• Avocados: Add an avocado to your salad or make guacamole to get the benefits of this healthy, vitamin E-rich fruit.

• Olives: Whether you like to eat olives as a snack or use olive oil when cooking, you can expect to increase your vitamin E intake by including olives in your diet.

Making vitamin E-focused meals is simple and delicious. Here’s one recipe you can try at home today!

½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved

2 hard-cooked peeled eggs

1 avocado, sliced

6 pieces of turkey bacon, cooked and chopped

½ cup whole grain croutons (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

DRESSING

1/4 cup light mayonnaise (or plain Greek yogurt)

1 tablespoon water

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Salt and pepper to taste

PREPARATION

In a large bowl, combine spinach and tomatoes. Place all of your salad dressing ingredients together in a jar and shake until completely combined. Top spinach mixture with two hardcooked eggs per bowl, sliced avocado, turkey bacon and croutons. Drizzle with dressing and enjoy!

The uplifting truth about end-of-life care

When a loved one is critically ill, hearing that it’s time for hospice care can be devastating news. On top of the emotional upheaval of coping with a terminal illness, you may be unsure what hospice care really is — and believe it’s just an indication your loved one will likely pass away.

Yet the time your loved one spends in hospice care doesn’t have to be sad — for anyone. In fact, said Toni Norman, the senior director of hospice operations for Brookdale Senior Living, hospice can be a deeply rewarding time of great comfort for patients and their families.

Hospice care providers often encounter common misconceptions about hospice care. Norman offers the truth behind some mistaken beliefs:

“Hospice care is not about waiting for someone to die, and that’s unfortunately a very common misconception,” Norman said. “The goal of hospice is to provide to a patient who has a life-limiting illness the physical comfort and medical care they need to stay in their home for as long as possible, while at the same time supporting their caregivers. The hospice team helps families by educating, supporting and identifying any needs they have, ranging from chaplain support to finding mortuaries and veteran benefits.”

The decision to begin hospice care is a communal one, with the patient, caregivers, loved ones and medical professionals contributing to the dialogue. “A terminal diagnosis from a doctor usually begins the process of seeking hospice care,” Norman said. “Also, as a family member’s health begins to decline due to illness, conversations about end-of-life care are proactive and compassionate.”

• Hospice is for the last few weeks of life: The hospice Medicare benefit is for the last six months, if the disease follows its normal course. “Most people who enter hospice have done so because they’ve received a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness,” Norman said. “But people who enter hospice often live longer, and with a better quality of life, than terminally ill people who do not go into hospice. Many are even able to come off hospice service if their condition improves.”

• Hospice means giving up: Hospice is actually a commitment to a high level of care for a loved one. “It means making them as comfortable and safe as possible so they may enjoy time with their loved ones for as long as possible,” Norman said.

• Patients are heavily medicated: Patients receive medication under strict physician guidelines, and caregivers closely monitor comfort care protocols so each patient’s pain and symptoms are uniquely managed.

• Hospice patients can no longer see their doctors: Patients can continue to see any of their previous doctors. Rather than taking anything away, hospice adds a layer of medical support.

• Hospice care ends when a patient dies: Because hospice cares for the patient’s caregivers and loved ones as well as the patient, hospice team members continue their support for up to 13 months after the patient passes away. The hospice team provides grief support for the families and will continue to work with them to address any lingering questions, and to help identify their needs.

“The hospice team is composed of the assigned physician and nurses to provide the direct medical care to the patient, while a chaplain, social worker and bereavement counselor provide additional support and education to families and caregivers,” Norman said.

Hospice ideally occurs in a patient’s home, whether that’s a personal residence or assisted living community. It is a Medicare-reimbursed benefit, and most private insurance providers do also cover some hospice costs.

“End-of-life care isn’t just about taking pain medications to relieve symptoms until death,” Norman said. “It helps people gain emotional strength and carry on with daily life while improving the quality of life. The goal is to help patients and their families make every remaining moment as comfortable and enriching as possible.”

A Four-Point Plan for Joint Health It all comes down to regular maintenance.

Whether it’s a brand-new Bentley or a classic Mustang, most people have a car they dream about. If they’re lucky enough to own it someday, you better believe they’re going to take care of it.

Regular maintenance is an essential part of keeping a vehicle in tip-top shape. The same is true of the human body, particularly the joints.

“Prevention is the only thing that actually prolongs the health of your joints, similar to the care of a machine,” said Matt Johnson, health and performance expert and president of On Target Living. “If you want something to last as long as possible, and to cost as little as possible over the long run, you have to do maintenance, perform checkups and change the oil. Taking care of your body is no different. If you do, your joints can last until you’re 80, 90 or even 100 without tendon or ligament issues.”

Johnson notes that joint issues are some of the most common concerns he sees in his practice. These issues can happen at any age, although many start to manifest between the ages of 40 and 50, after years of wear and tear cause pain and inflammation.

Johnson’s mantra: If you take care of the body, it will take care of you. To help people of any age maintain joint health, he recommends this four-point joint-maintenance plan:

1. Rest

The first part of healing the joints is to rest them. Massage, meditation, light yoga, stretching and cool baths are great ways to rest the joints. Additionally, quality sleep each night is essential. (Quick tip: Take an Epsom salts bath once a week.)

2. Healing nutrients

Studies show that omega-3 fats can help support joint health by limiting inflammation after exercise and boosting hormones that help the body heal.

3. Superfoods

Superfood herbs and spices help the body get maximum nutrients in minimal amounts. For example, curcumin and bromelain are both great for helping joint pain and repair. Remember, limited processing of the product is ideal for the best absorption.

4. Exercise and body alignment

You can’t have optimal joint function if the body is out of alignment. There are five key joint checkpoints: ankle, knee, hip, shoulder and neck. This is where you start to achieve perfect posture, after which you can focus on strengthening the large muscles.

“The best age is always now,” said Johnson. “Start as soon as possible and think about it like you take care of a car or nice jewelry. Joints are meant to last as long as you live. The key is to take care of them with quality nutrition, normal exercise and adequate rest.”

Weight loss tips: Cut calories without cutting flavor

Approximately two-thirds of adults in this country are overweight or obese. This extra weight may pose life-threatening health risks, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. For an overweight person, losing even 5% of their weight can be meaningful. While the idea of losing weight may feel overwhelming, beginning the journey means starting with small steps.

An important place to start is with healthy eating. Often, go-to favorite foods are high in fat, sugar, starch and sodium. Eating large portions of such foods can hinder weight loss and lead to obesity and related health risks. Reducing portions can help cut calories, and there are ways of adjusting favorite recipes to add healthy ingredients without skimping on flavor.

For example, try the oven-fried fish & chips recipe at right for a lighter take on a popular dish. To cut the calories in half and reduce the fat, this recipe calls for coating the delicate fish in a crispy cornflake crust before baking it along with sliced potatoes.

Oven-Fried Fish & Chips

Prep time: 25 minutes

Cook time: 45 minutes

Servings: 4

Difficulty: Easy

INGREDIENTS

Canola or olive oil cooking spray

11/2 pounds russet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into 1/4-inchthick wedges

4 teaspoons canola oil

11/2 teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning, divided 2 cups cornflakes

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 large egg whites, beaten 1 pound cod or haddock, cut into 4 portions

PREPARATION

Position racks in upper and lower third of oven; preheat to 425 F. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Set a wire rack on another large baking sheet; coat with cooking spray. Place potatoes in a colander. Thoroughly rinse with cold water, then pat dry completely with paper towels. Toss the potatoes, oil and 3/4 teaspoon Cajun (or Creole) seasoning in a large bowl. Spread on the baking sheet without the rack. Bake on the lower oven rack, turning every 10 minutes, until tender and golden, 30 to 35 minutes. Meanwhile, coarsely grind cornflakes in a food processor or blender or crush in a sealable plastic bag. Transfer to a shallow dish. Place flour, the remaining 3/4 teaspoon Cajun (or Creole) seasoning and salt in another shallow dish and egg whites in a third shallow dish. Dredge fish in the flour mixture, dip it in egg white and then coat all sides with the ground cornflakes. Place on the prepared wire rack. Coat both sides of the breaded fish with cooking spray. Bake the fish on the upper oven rack until opaque in the center and the breading is golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes.
