Medicare on your mind? What do I need to know?
What if I'm ready to retire at 65?
When is my Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)? Your IEP allows you to enroll any time beginning 3 months before your 65th birthday month, the month you turn 65 and the 3 months after your birthday month.
If you retire at age 65, you will be eligible to enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A & B) as well as other Medicare plans provided you meet all other Medicare eligibility requirements. If you did not enroll when you turned 65 because you had employer-sponsored coverage based on active employment, you have 8 months after your employment or coverage ends (whichever happens first) to sign up for Medicare without a late-enrollment penalty. You may want to enroll in Medicare before you retire to avoid a gap in coverage.
I’m already enrolled, but have changing health care needs. What can I do? You should review your Medicare health plan each year. You can make coverage changes during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.
What if I plan on working past 65?
Have questions about Medicare?
If you plan to work past age 65, check with your employer's benefits administrator before making a decision about your Medicare coverage. How your employer's coverage would work with your Medicare coverage depends on a number of factors; your employer can give you the information you need to make the choice that's best for you.
Medicare enrollment can be confusing. The good news is we can help you make decisions that are best for you and your family. Whether you're enrolling for the first time or reviewing changing needs, one of our friendly licensed agents can help you every step of the process.
We can help find the Florida Blue Medicare plan that is best for you. Call today to learn more.

NSC MEDICAL GUIDE 15
How to Save Money on Health Care (BPT) - One in two Americans has a chronic condition and 86 percent of health care spending is on chronic care, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When it comes to saving money, health care is probably the last place you might look, but there are many ways to build better health and stronger savings.
1. Take advantage of preventive care services.
Being proactive about your health and taking care of yourself before problems have a chance to arise or get out of control is one of the best ways to reduce future health costs and prevent unnecessary headaches. Medical, dental and vision insurance cover a wide range of preventive care services – from well-visit exams with your primary care physician to bi-annual dental checkups and annual vision exams. But many are simply not taking advantage of these benefits.
2. Don’t ignore your teeth and eyes.
Neglecting dental and vision preventive care can impact your overall health – which can create large health care costs. You expect your dentist to spot cavities, but did you know your dentist might be able to detect trouble that extends beyond your mouth? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, 90 percent of diseases show signs and symptoms in the mouth. Certain medical
conditions, such as diabetes, are better managed with good dental health. Periodontal (gum) disease can greatly impact the sugar levels of those suffering from diabetes, and patients with diabetes who treat their periodontal disease have lower medical costs. Additionally, while a vision exam is important to see if your vision needs correction, a comprehensive exam allows an eye doctor to check for early signs of eye disease. An eye doctor can be the first to identify chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, through an eye exam – due to the increased visibility of blood vessel size.
3. Integrate and save.
Consumers are often disconnected from the care they need – care that could identify chronic disease earlier and before it becomes a high-dollar illness. One often overlooked way to save money on health care is by integrating your coverage – a growing trend in the insurance industry. Integrated health care connects the dots between health, dental, vision, disability and pharmacy coverage to increase communication between doctors and providers. Coordination of care also makes it possible for care managers and providers to work together to find the best solutions for your health. In some cases, you may even be automatically enrolled for extra benefits customized to your health needs.

Tips for a Healthy Brain Mental health should be everyone’s concern. And while the science is evolving, and evidence points to the idea that we can push back on cognitive decline, how can we achieve the quality of life that so often eludes us, especially as we grow older? Simply put, what’s the best way for an individual to take care of their brain? There’s general agreement among health care professionals that a healthy body promotes a healthy mind. For example, we know that eating what we should—the right combination of fruits and vegetables, protein, healthy fats and vitamins—is the type of diet that produces the best results. That’s the general rule, but we live in a tainted world, filled with toxic pollutants, viruses, illnesses and disease, as well as other variables that conspire to rob us of our well-intentioned goals. Despite these killjoys, there’s general agreement among the medical community that by adopting healthy lifestyle habits, we can largely overcome these obstacles and achieve the maximum results that will help both brain and body. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • Exercise - There’s little doubt that regular exercise that increases heart rate and blood flow is beneficial. Not surprisingly, studies have shown a link between physical fitness and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Don’t wait; it’s never too late to adopt healthy habits. • Be heart-healthy - Cardiovascular disease and stroke are all too common in today’s society. High blood pressure and obesity can impair and impact cognitive health, so take steps to avoid those risk factors! And if you smoke, quit now. • Treat mental health concerns accordingly - If you’re suffering from depression or anxiety, and feel it’s negatively impacting your health, seek help. There are studies linking those symptoms with an increased risk of cognitive decline. • Eat right! - A balanced, healthy diet can help to reduce the chance that your brain and body will be affected by illness or disease. The right amount of fatty foods, fruits and vegetables can help reduce your risk.
• Play brain games! - A challenged brain is a healthy brain. Engage in activities that exercise the mind; do a puzzle, read a book, play a game, anything that gets your brain cells moving. Keep the gray matter activated! • Protect yourself - Contact sports, falls, bike accidents—they can all contribute to injuries to the brain, so protect what you’ve got upstairs by wearing a helmet or seat belt in situations where you might be vulnerable. Are you worried about cognitive decline? If you’re starting to see symptoms like debilitating memory loss, extreme confusion, or the inability to complete familiar, daily tasks, you should talk to your doctor. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help, and until you’ve been evaluated by a health care professional, you could be risking the best years of your life. Remember, what you do today will help determine how healthy you are tomorrow.

Veterans Connect Through Telemedicine To say that the coronavirus pandemic has affected the lives of millions would be an understatement. Since it began, we’ve seen a worldwide shift in how we adapt to an ever-increasing avalanche of information, some of it changing on a daily basis. One consequence of COVID is the way people relate to their health care providers. Given the daily warnings broadcast by the media, who can blame anyone for postponing appointments, or avoiding them altogether? As a result, there are many who’ve put off seeing their doctor—and possibly put their health in jeopardy. Several options are out there, and technological advancements now make it possible to see a physician without leaving home. Zoom and Microsoft Teams are just two ways patients can have appointments with their doctor, and there are other emerging online portals in the works as well. One example can be found in the way military veterans connect with their doctors. The Department of Veterans Affairs—the VA—has been at the forefront of connecting patients and health care teams using technology for well over a decade. Veterans are increasingly using platforms like
My HealtheVet, the VA’s online health portal, and VA Video Connect, their secure video appointment application. These platforms allow patients to request VA prescription refills, review medical records and interact directly with their health care provider. VA patients are also catching on to other technologies, like the VA’s Mobile App Store. With the precautions necessitated by COVID-19, the VA has seen an explosion in telemedicine visits by 1,132%* since February of this year. Additionally, since March, the VA has distributed over 12,000 electronic tablets to veterans, enabling them to connect, and they’re reaching out to patients in rural areas. Of course, military veterans aren’t the only segment of the population who can take advantage of telemedicine. If your concerns over the virus have caused you to put off a health care visit, talk to your doctor’s office about an online appointment. Options are available, enabling patients to take precautions against COVID and see their primary care doctor at the same time. *Source: https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/77099/ connected-care-boon-veterans-pandemic/

What You Still Don’t Know About Breast Cancer (BPT) - The topic of breast cancer can feel familiar: from October walks to pink ribbons, Americans know breast cancer. That is, until you or a loved one is diagnosed. Suddenly, breast cancer moves from a topic that feels championed to a topic that is entirely too new, too unknown and too fresh. Suddenly, there is not enough information or resources to help a family cope. Nearly all Americans are aware that breast cancer poses a serious health threat to both women and men, but despite the vast awareness, many don’t know what it really means to fight this disease. According to a recent study conducted by Ford Motor Co.’s breast cancer awareness initiative, Warriors in Pink, more than 40 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the day-to-day challenges patients face while in treatment, and even more, nearly 75 percent, admit that they are unsure how to best support patients. Not knowing how to help makes a difference, because family and friends are proven to be patients’ greatest resources for getting through treatment. Supporters may not know where to start in providing support, feeling that the issues facing patients are too big for them to solve. But what you still don’t know about breast cancer is that the little things matter more than ever. In fact, the ability to maintain day-to-day routines during treatment is one of breast cancer patients’ top concerns – second only to life expectancy. “In terms of the day-to-day, it’s those tasks that were hardest for me,” said breast cancer survivor Jenn. “So my friends and family just came and did things. They didn’t give me a choice. A lot of times, people reach out and say, ‘What can I do?’ But I’m not a person who asks for help. It was those friends who didn’t even ask, just acted, that I really shared the journey with.” The key to care and being able to “just act” is being familiar with what types of support patients need most. When asked what type of support that is, patients report needing the most help with daily activities like household chores, errands and meal preparation while undergoing treatment. “People brought meals to me,” said survivor Lisa, “and my husband organized a lot of the logistics – taking me to appointments and helping me organize those appointments. Family and friends would come help with tasks for me,
too. Because of them, I didn’t have to worry about grocery shopping or other types of tiring daily chores.” Another survivor, Lori, could relate. “My husband hired a cleaning crew to come in, and my kids would come home and see the lines in the carpet, smell the cleanser and feel comfortable in their home. It made our life so much easier,” she said. These daily tasks are often overlooked, but every action taken to help patients focus on their health and fight this disease makes a difference. “There are missing things that people don’t think about,” said survivor Heidi. “For example, if you need your sidewalk shoveled because of the snow, your lawn mowed or your pets cared for. Who has energy to walk their dog when they’re doing eight or nine hours of chemo or daily radiation?” While help with these daily tasks undeniably lessens the burden on breast cancer patients, it’s important to remember that emotional care is also vital for those going through treatment. “Through it all, you need at least one supporter who is genuinely there to do just that, to support you; to pray with you and to make you laugh,” said survivor Deborah. “Amidst trying to be strong throughout treatment and recovery, and making sure that everything in your personal life still gets accomplished, one really does need that supportive friend or group to share your innermost feelings.” To empower friends and family to take action and support the breast cancer patients in their lives, Ford Warriors in Pink offers free support services that make it easy to respond to their greatest needs – including cleaning services, meal kit deliveries, alternative hospital wear, online scheduling tools and more. “I was blessed with a great family and friends that were there to bring me support,” Lori said. “But when people don’t have that support, they really need to feel comfortable with the resources that are available to them – whether through their doctors or online.” Take the time to learn how you can make the little things add up to a supportive journey for the breast cancer patient in your life.

Eight Reasons to Put a Hearing Test at the Top of Your ‘To Do’ List (BPT) - No matter what your age, untreated hearing loss can take its toll. The catch is, hearing loss is stealthy. It’s usually hard to notice at first. In fact, it tends to come on so gradually that it tricks you into oblivion. Then it robs you of more than you realize, sooner than you realize. It’s a noisy world. You’re part of it. And the numbers show that hearing loss is becoming more common among younger adults in their 20s and 30s. So make sure you value your hearing. It’s a treasure worth keeping.
Here are eight reasons you should get a hearing test today: 1. It may help your pocketbook. Research shows that middle-aged people with hearing loss have about a third more in health care payments than those without hearing loss. A study by the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) shows that using hearing aids reduces the risk of income loss by 90 to 100 percent for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77 percent for those with severe to moderate hearing loss. People with untreated hearing loss lost as much as $30,000 in income annually, the study found. 2. Your mind may benefit. Research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia, leading experts to believe that interventions, like hearing aids, could potentially delay or prevent dementia. 3. It could boost your job performance. Most hearing aid users in the workforce say it has helped their performance on the job. 4. Life’s challenges may not seem so intimidating. Research shows people with hearing loss who use hearing aids are more likely to tackle problems actively. 5. Your zest for life might get zestier. Most people who use hearing aids say it has a positive effect on their relationships. They’re more likely to have a strong social
network, be optimistic, feel engaged in life, and even get more pleasure in doing things. 6. It could protect you against the blues. Hearing loss is linked to a greater risk of depression in adults, especially 18to 69-year-olds. But studies also show that treating hearing loss can boost quality of life. 7. You’ll probably be more likely to get the drift. Most people who use hearing aids say it helps their overall ability to communicate effectively in most situations. The majority who bought their hearing aids within the past five years say they’re pleased with their ability to hear in the workplace, at home with family members and in conversations. 8. Your heart and health may benefit. Cardiovascular and hearing health are linked. Some experts say the inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow that it’s possible that abnormalities in the cardiovascular system could be noted here earlier than in other less-sensitive parts of the body. Hearing loss may signal or exacerbate other health conditions, as well, including depression, sleep apnea, cognitive decline, and the risk of falling and hospitalization. So do it for your health. Do it for your happiness. Get a hearing test.

Silent Stroke is Not So Silent (BPT) - Silent strokes, ones that happen in your brain without you even knowing, can lead to fullblown strokes as well as cognitive impairment and dementia. The most common depiction of a stroke is a person unable to move on one side of their body with slurred speech, but studies show that many stroke victims had silent strokes previously that, as the name indicates, went unnoticed. The damage caused by the silent stroke, however, can be seen through advanced imaging techniques. Since no one is suggesting that everyone get an annual brain scan, the next best thing is to understand the risk factors for silent stroke and control those. Three of those risk factors – high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and blockages in the carotid arteries – are simple to screen for and have effective treatments.
“The upside to all this is that there are steps one can take to prevent silent stroke,” says Dr. Andrew Manganaro, a vascular surgeon and chief medical officer for Life Line Screening. “What it takes is a measure of awareness, routine screening and, if needed, treatment to prevent the blood clots that can lead to this long-term damage to the brain.” Silent strokes are 30 to 40 percent more prevalent in women than men and the results can be serious. Impaired movement, muscle weakness, depression, memory problems and cognitive problems are all associated with silent stroke. “So when atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure or carotid blockage is present in a patient, that should be an indicator to her physician that she’s at risk of a silent stroke,” Manganaro says.
The key to preventing stroke is to get a full picture of your vascular health so you can begin treatment and monitoring. Manganaro recommends routine screenings for the damaged arteries that indicate vascular problems. Testing for high blood pressure, carotid blockages and the presence of atrial fibrillation, along with peripheral arterial disease screening and abdominal aortic aneurysm testing, are safe and accurate. Silent stroke risk factors: high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and blockages.
“These screenings can help you and your doctor get a full picture of your vascular health,” says Manganaro. To cut your risk of stroke, treating hypertension with medication and lifestyle changes can help, Manganaro said. Control your weight, reduce your consumption of red meat, eat more plant foods and talk to your doctor about starting an exercise program. If you smoke, make it a priority to quit. Smokers have double the risk of stroke compared to nonsmokers, because smoking can lead to excessive blood clotting. If you or your family members have noticed recent changes to your memory facility or mobility, consult with your doctor. In some patients, these have been symptoms of a silent stroke, but in any case it will benefit you to find the root cause and begin treatment.
The key to preventing stroke is to get a full picture of your vascular health so you can begin treatment and monitoring.

Why You Need Vitamin E (BPT) - Vitamin E is an antioxidant and therefore helps improve immunity levels. This is of particular value during the COVID-19 pandemic and as we enter flu season. Here are the potential benefits of a diet rich in vitamin E: • Fights summer colds: In the summer, vitamin E can boost your immunity to prevent sickness during the warmer months. • Extends cell life: While there are many factors that can influence aging, vitamin E can extend cell life to keep skin in great shape for years. • Repairs damaged cells: With vitamin E oil, you can also repair damaged cells. Specifically, vitamin E can be used to treat sunburns and scars. • May reduce risk of heart disease and cancer: There’s still much to be discovered about vitamin E. Currently, doctors and scientists are testing whether vitamin E can reduce the risk of serious health conditions, like heart disease and cancer. • Reduces risk of cataracts and other eye issues: Maintain eye health and prevent serious eye diseases by getting your daily intake of vitamin E. • May slow down cognitive decline: Studies have found that
Excellence With Compassion
a higher intake of vitamin E in older individuals can reduce cognitive decline and can even slow down the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s. The U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin E in individuals 14 years and older is 15 milligrams. “Follow a healthy diet that focuses on vitamin E-rich vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and lean forms of protein,” says Lyssie Lakatos, a registered dietitian. Lakatos lists these five foods as examples of what you can include in your vitamin E-rich meal plan. • Pistachios: A protein-packed snack, pistachios are also a rich source of vitamin E you can take on the go. • Spinach: When preparing salads, toss some spinach into the mix. This dark, leafy green is also high in calcium. • Eggs: Eggs contain vitamin E and are also packed with omega-3s and vitamins like B12 and D. • Avocados: Add an avocado to your salad or make guacamole to get the benefits of this healthy, vitamin E-rich fruit. • Olives: Whether you like to eat olives or use olive oil when cooking, you will increase your vitamin E intake by including olives in your diet.
