Have you ever been on the receiving end of countless bits of exercise tips? Some of that information may be the “real thing;” however, it is often mixed with unscientific advice that could negatively impact your workout and put you at risk for injuries. Fortunately, research is continuously updating us with safe information. Here are six myths about exercise.

MYTH When you stop exercising, muscles turn into fat FACT Muscle and fat cells are two different structures and

one doesn’t magically turn into the other. When you stop exercising, muscles sense they are no longer needed and will simply atrophy. And as metabolism slows down, you lose the ability to burn as much fat, so extra calories are stored as fat.

MYTH You can target your fat burn FACT Targeting specific areas is often called spot reducing.

And one of the more popular targeted areas where people tend to focus on excessive exercising are the abdominals. Research tells us targeting specific areas of our bodies may firm muscles, but body fat remains on top of the targeted muscle.

Fat is lost from throughout the body as a result of regular exercise and a healthy diet. Age, gender and genetics are also contributing factors.

MYTH You have to be sore or you didn’t get a good workout FACT There are some who actually judge the quality of their workout based on how sore they feel after their workout. You do not have to feel sore to be effective. And if you have a good workout and don’t feel sore, it could mean you were hydrated before and during your workout.

Targets glutes, hip flexors, quadriceps. Abdominal muscles, calves, lower back also receive a good workout.

• Stand tall, feet about shoulder-width apart.

• Hold hands in front of you to help with balance.

• Hinge forward from hips, sitting buttocks back as you would be sitting in a chair.

• Contracting abdominals, bend knees until thighs are parallel or near parallel to floor, keeping weight back on heels.

• Drop arms by your sides, tighten buttocks and drive though heels to standing with a knee lift.

• Beginners can build up gradually.

• Repeat alternating knee lifts, 8-10 times each side.

SQUAT WITH SIDE LEG LIFT

Targets same muscles as shown in the first exercise, but also builds strength in outer thighs.

• Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, abdominals contracted.

• Holding hands in front of you, bend knees and lower hips into a squat.

• Press arms down to sides as you straighten legs while lifting right leg out to the side.

• Return leg to squat position, repeating pattern on other side.

• Continue alternating side leg lifts, 8-10 times each side.

STATIONARY LUNGE FOR BEGINNERS Targets thighs, glutes, calves.

MYTH Sweating when exercising means • Stand with one foot in front of other foot, abdominals contracted. fat loss • Hands at waist with back straight.

FACT Sweating may make the numbers on the scale go • Drop body straight down and up, keeping knee over ankle. down, but it’s temporary water weight loss, not a fat loss.

Weight is easily regained when you rehydrate by drinking water or eating. And the same is true for sauna sweat suits.

• Avoid falling forward.

• Repeat pattern 8-10 times on one side, change sides and repeat pattern.

MYTH Behind-the-head lat pull-downs are CLAMSHELLS more effective than front pull-downs Keeps hips moving. Strengthens hips, glutes, thighs.

FACT The National Council on Strength and Fitness tells us that the lat pull-down behind the head increases the risk for cervical spine injury and is less efficient at targeting the lats.

MYTH Rest Days Are Not Necessary FACT Many scientific studies tell us rest days are consid-

ered just as important as the exercise. A day or two of rest helps the muscle to recover, rebuild and become stronger while preventing “burn out” from over-training. If you perform strong workouts every day without taking a rest day, you are inviting strains, joint pain and fatigue.

• Lying on your side, place forearm on floor, abdominals contracted.

• Bend both knees, stacking legs together.

• Keeping feet together rotate upper hip, slowly lifting and lowering top knee.

Lower hip remains on floor.

• Repeat pattern 8-10 times on each side.

USF’s OLLI Ups the ante on online learning and in-person experiences

OLLI - USF members meeting both major political parties, traveled the world and taught generations as a history professor.

Long story short, Joseph McAuliffe has never surrendered to the easy-breezy lull of complacency.

“We used to believe that sometime during our fifties we stop producing brain cells,” McAuliffe says, “but research on our brain’s neuroplasticity disproved this long-held belief in the 1990s.”

Learning something new, McAuliffe says, especially attempting to learn things you’ve never studied before, is healthier for the mind. Continued learning has regenerative effects on the brain and has the potential to prevent or delay cognitive decline.

“The problem older people have to face is shutting down and becoming victims of routine.” This type of settling, he emphasizes, is the worst thing for us.

OLLI, on the other hand, pushes older adults to venture outside their comfort zone. The program is open to people of all ages but focuses on adults 50 and older. It’s one of 125 chapters in the U.S. and has more than tripled attendance since opening in 1993, but pandemic self-quarantining caused a 30 percent drop.

He takes a sip from a mug with his favorite quote: “I am still learning.” The souvenir from the National Gallery of Art sums up his mission in life and work succinctly. It has taken up real estate on McAuliffe’s desk every day since his daughter gave it to him.

Besides leading USF’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) as manager of educational programming for nearly 20 years, McAuliffe has preached to the masses as an ordained minister. The brother of former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (2014-18) has campaigned for

But what loomed as an obstacle turned into a teachable moment in adapting to change.

McAuliffe praises USF’s OLLI for having tech-savvy instructors and resources. He and his coterie of volunteers were able to ramp up online instruction to turn the tide and teach students how to use Zoom.

“We were able to retain a higher percentage of students because we have a strong tech presence,” he stipulates.

OLLI students who grew up long before the tech age and never imagined themselves attending school via computer screen have embarked on a new way of learning, a process that speaks to McAuliffe’s “I am still learning” manifesto.

“One retired homemaker told me she didn’t think she could figure out the tech. So, I taught her how to download Zoom and got her up and running.”

Classroom learning will also be available this fall at OLLI. The institute follows COVID-19 guidelines in accordance with USF’s policy and CDC guidelines.

Course topics vary and offer thought-provoking and culturally relevant subject matter in both online and inperson modalities. Prospective students can discuss “The Beatles: In Our Lives” with instructor Stephen Meininger or debate “Global Perspectives and U.S. Interests” with Caryle Cammisa.

While OLLI instructors may be unpaid volunteers, they are experts in their field. “We provide a training orientation for teaching in OLLI, and every class is evaluated by the registered students,” McAuliffe says.

OLLI also presents a Friday Night Lectures Series and Shared Interest Group experiences, which have kicked back into gear with online and in-person gatherings. They’re focused on hobbies, topics of discussion, foreign language learning and, arguably the most popular of them all, being out in nature. OLLI Outdoors, better known as “the OLLI hikers,” gives people a chance to enjoy nature trails with the assurance of safety in numbers.

Volunteer Anne Haywood, a retired librarian, has been involved with OLLI hikers and other groups as well as events and classes, both online and in person. She speaks highly of the shared interest groups’ socialization benefits, emphasizing that they offer ice-breakers to ease social anxieties.

“In our Opportunity Group, people arrive up to 30 minutes early. There’s an interview question, so everyone gets to share a bit about themselves, to listen and learn,” Haywood explains.

“Online, we’re all getting to know one another without ever really being in the same room … even though I have no idea how tall they are,” she says with a laugh.

Even so, Haywood adds, “it’s been, I think, very valuable to people to have that social life online.”

I loved this car because it taught me life lessons. Getting married, we needed a new car. My only request was that it be automatic.

A Toyota Corolla SR5 in royal blue. The excitement faded when I learned it was a stick. “The interior resembles the cockpit on a plane,” he smiled. It was our only car and I didn’t see myself driving it, ever!

In time I did learn. This car took me to classes at VCU in Richmond, Va., 36 miles away. I cringed every time “Blue” would have to stop at

the Broad Street traffic light – high on a hill in Richmond, praying for a green light. A red light meant I might roll downhill when hitting the gas.

“Blue” was the catalyst to lessons in marriage – become financially independent, be confident in challenges and be considerate of your mate’s ideas. That car remained with us for ten years; the lessons “she” taught were for a lifetime. Thanks, “Blue.”
