SKIP FAD DIETS AND NUTRITION MYTHS

Skip the fad diets that promise those myths of melting fat away, and accept the challenge of making permanent, healthful nutritional changes in your lifestyle. Our food habits, created by a lifetime of repeating the same behavior over and over, can be broken. While we may be products of our past, we are also products of our choices.

Nutritional information is everywhere and just like fitness myths, it is difficult to know if that information is factually based or just more misinformation. To add to the confusion, there are many diets that offer many options. Some estimate there are at least 30,000 diets. While some are based on solid nutrition, there are many fad diets that promise “amazing” results. Typically, a fad diet promises a quick fix such as losing 15 pounds in 5 days. The weight you lose on that type of diet is mostly water and lean tissue and will return the moment you resume eating normally. Losing no more than 2 pounds a week is considered a healthy weight loss. Other fad diets will promote “magical” foods or severely restricted food groups such as carbohydrates, all without any standard diet recommendations. To find the most accurate source of nutrition information, check with a registered dietitian or a licensed nutritionist.

Myth: Carbohydrates make you gain weight

Yes, but only when you consume too many or the wrong kind. Carbohydrates are our bodies’ main source of energy. Many people tend to overeat highly processed carbs such as bread, cupcakes, chips and sugary cereals. However, fruits, veggies, beans, and nuts are all rich in complex carbohydrates and play an important role in a healthy diet.

Myth: Sweet potatoes are better for you than white potatoes

Both are pretty equal in offering vitamins and nutrients if they are boiled or baked, not deep fried. Sweet potatoes are higher in vitamin A while white potatoes are higher in potassium and magnesium.

Myth: Skipping meals is good for weight loss

Skipping meals or drastically reducing calories is not healthy nor is it effective. When you begin skipping meals on a regular basis, it can mess up your metabolism and actually cause weight gain.

Myth: Fruit juice is a good way to increase fruit in your diet

Fruit juice is very high in added sugars, sometimes as much as 40 grams. Much better to eat whole fruits, which also give you the added benefit of fiber.

Myth: Low-fat or fat-free foods are healthy Many foods with fat free or low-fat labels have additives such as sugar, sodium, flour and chemical fillers to make up for the lack of flavor. Check the nutrition label to find a food’s overall content.

You may also walk your hands over to the left, lengthening and stretching the right side of your back. Hold a few seconds then walk hands to the right side, stretching left side of your back.

urban  farm Tasting tours and hands-on harvesting just might turn holiday blues to healthy green.

Emmanuel Roux shares a meal with friends on the half-acre education farm near downtown St. Petersburg.

PETERSBURG - Mere blocks north of Tropicana Field, Emmanuel Roux doffs his straw hat and beckons visitors to his “office” – three rusty chairs, a plank bench and a dozen stumps beneath a canopy of moringa and mango trees. Here, at the 15th Street Farm, the urban farmer offers the panacea for a pandemic: the restorative power of Mother Nature.

“The coronavirus is reminding us that being outdoors is so beneficial for physical and mental health,” said Roux, extolling the vital connection “between healthy soil, healthy plants, healthy animals and healthy humans.”

Cabbage, collards and carrots; beets, eggplant and spinach; starfruit, pineapples and papayas; culinary herbs chevron, sorrel and fennel… a seasonal cornucopia of about 100 vegetables and fruits grow on the half-acre education farm. “The satisfaction you get from eating a fruit you pick from a tree is a satisfaction you’ll remember all your life,” said Roux.

With public health officials urging holiday gatherings be limited in size and preferably outdoors, the garden can provide a safe haven for families and friends to exercise and socialize 10 or 20 or 30 feet apart.

The gate opens to the public twice a week, Wednesdays, and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Group visits, 10 is the ideal number, can be booked every other day of the week. Guests get to hear Roux expound on the intelligence of plants, why soil matters and the virtues of gut microbiomes, valuable knowledge he cultivated growing up on family farms in Tunisia and France and now as a consultant with the Metropolitan Food Project at the USF Microbiome institute.

A blind tasting exercise, always a highlight of the tour, features a range of flavors and textures that will “reawaken and expand your taste boundaries,” promises Roux.

“I guarantee you will try things you can never imagine existed,” he said, detailing medicinal and therapeutic benefits of nasturtium, cranberry hibiscus, Cuban oregano and curry leaves. He saves the most exotic for last with fair warning: the Sichuan Button, AKA toothache plant, will knock your socks off.

Born to French parents in Tunisia, Roux, 70, studied hotel management in Switzerland; served in the French Navy and worked for a U.S. oil company in the Sahara before moving to New York in 1975 to become general manager of the Lotos Club, one of the oldest literary clubs in the United States.

He started Gaston Dupre Ultimate Pasta, the first U.S. company to make dried gourmet pasta, operating first in Savannah and then Tampa.

Roux has owned four St. Petersburg restaurants: The Lobby; The Garden, A Mediterranean Bistro; Redwoods; and Haiku Sushi at Redwoods, ”the first sushi bar in town,” he says.

In 2010, experimenting with organic ingredients in a flourless choco late cake led to his online retail business, Gateau O Chocolat.

Roux is married to Jennifer Hardin, former chief curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown St. Petersburg.

Roux co-founded the project at 340 15th Street North with some friends 10 years ago as a therapy garden for residents in recovery at the Faith House. The halfway house closed in 2016 and the property was reinvented as EcoVillage, then 15th Street Agrihub, before its current name. The objective, to demonstrate regenerative and organic urban agriculture, has never changed.

The non-profit is not zoned to sell their fresh produce but it may be ordered online through the Saturday Morning Market website.

If you go: Volunteers provide most of the labor, several affiliated with the St.Pete Timebank, and Roux does not draw a manager’s salary. Donations are encouraged and appreciated for programming and future construction.

“Gardens are like food, they attract people, they build community,” Roux said.

15th Street Farm is open to visitors Wednesdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 340 15th Street N in St. Petersburg.

Last month, after a lengthy permitting process, the farm gained city approval to erect a 3,000-sq. ft. event barn on the property. The structure will include a commercial kitchen, bathrooms and covered space for 60 people to participate in cooking, baking and gardening classes.

As Roux envisions it: “You arrive for a 9 a.m. tour and everyone gets a basket. They harvest vegetables, go into the kitchen to prepare them, then sit down to eat with bread made in our wood-fired brick oven from flour ground on site.”

He expects themed farm-to-table dinners will become popular events, served family style, “because we are what we eat and sharing makes it taste better.”

The non-profit farm welcomes donations. Produce from the farm may be ordered at stpeteonlinefarmersmarket.org or via weekly basket subscriptions.

ASTRONOMY Daryl L. Schrader Dusk and early evening: Wow! Jupiter and Saturn will be close together, in the southwest, all month in the early evening. Jupiter is the brightest and about half a billion miles away while Saturn is a billion miles distant. They will be the closest together, on Dec. 21, in nearly 800 years. Around this date you will be able to see both in the same field of view in a telescope or binoculars. Don’t miss it!

Look for Mars in the southeast. The red planet is receding from us and continues to dim. Mars is about half our size and its day is about the same as ours.

Dawn: Look for Venus low in the southeast. Venus is our brightest and closest planet.

The winter solstice, which takes place at 5:02 a.m. Dec. 21 and signifies the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere and the start of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, is our shortest day of the year.

Dec. 7: Last quarter moon.

Dec. 10: Look before sunrise to find Spica to the lower right of a lunar crescent.

Dec. 12: The moon is at a perigee (closest) at 224,795 miles. Look to the southeast before dawn where a thin crescent moon is to the upper right of Venus.

Dec. 13: Geminid meteor show is best this evening and into the morning. Under ideal dark conditions you may see over 100 meteors per hour. Moonlight will not interfere.

Dec. 14: New moon.

Dec. 16: At dusk in the southwest a thin crescent moon is below the Jupiter-Saturn pair.

Dec. 17: Now the crescent moon is to the upper left of the Jupiter-Saturn pair in the southwest at dusk.

Safety tips for hosting holiday gatherings

Remind guests to stay home if they are sick

• Remind invited guests to stay home if they have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 14 days or are showing COVID-19 symptoms. Anyone who has had close contact with a person who has COVID-19 should also stay home and monitor their health.

Invited guests who live with those at higher risk should also consider the potential risk to their loved ones.

• Consider keeping a list of guests who attended for potential future contact tracing needs.

Encourage social distancing • Host your gathering outdoors, when possible. If this is not feasible, make sure the room or space is well-ventilated (for example, open a window).

• Arrange tables and chairs to allow for social distancing. People from the same household can be in groups together and don’t need to be 6 feet apart – just 6 feet away from other families.

• If planning activities for adults and/or kids, consider those where social distancing can be maintained, like sidewalk chalk art or frisbee.

• When guests arrive, minimize gestures that promote close contact.

For example, don’t shake hands, do elbow bumps, or give hugs.

Instead wave and verbally greet them.

Wear masks • Wear masks when less than 6 feet apart from people or indoors.

• Consider providing masks for guests or asking them to bring their own.

1967Austin Healey Sprite My favorite car was a 1967 Austin Healey Sprite, British Racing Green. It was a small two-seater sports car and my first convertible. It had great acceleration and I thought it was the bee’s knees! I drove it all the way to Naples, Italy from England one summer and even though it was 5 years old when I bought it, it never gave me any trouble. This photograph was taken in June of 1971 right before I sold it and came to America the very next month.
