Welcome to Our World It’s no longer a secret! Our little community in southern Hillsborough County continues to grow and thrive! SouthShore is now the place to be in Hillsborough County!

With the Amazon Fulfillment Center, Gateway Classic Cars, St Joeseph’s Hospital- South, Gannon University and the YMCA all landing right here in SouthShore over the last year, we continue to watch our community transform from a sleepy little town with potential to a place filled with opportunity, options and promise! SouthShore offers a community college, a postgraduate university, two large hospitals, arts and cultural venues, residential communities and tourism destinations.

With three major roadways — U.S. 41, Interstate 75 and U.S. 301 — running through SouthShore’s central location, we offer close proximity to Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Orlando. The community is home to the beautiful Alafia and Little Manatee rivers, both of which flow directly into Tampa Bay. We are an ultimate ecotourism destination with so many treasures to discover. Daily sunsets, waterside dining, seasonal manatee visits and beautiful nature preserves are just some of the unique opportunities we have available for residents and visitors to enjoy.

elected as a county commissioner in 2010, representing District 1. In 2011, Commissioner Murman was elected by her fellow commissioners to serve as vice chair of the Board of County Commissioners. Prior to joining the County Commission, Murman completed eight years as a member of the Florida House of Representatives, from 1996 to 2004. She is a champion of the SouthShore community and proud of its future.

137 Harbor Village Lane, Apollo Beach, FL 33572 The SouthShore Chamber of Commerce merged two historic chambers in 2011, combining Apollo Beach and Ruskin. The Apollo Beach chamber was founded in 1985 originally as an all-volunteer welcome center. The Ruskin chamber dates back to 1928 and was the very first chamber of commerce in southern Hillsborough County.

This issue of Explore, the SouthShore destination magazine, is published by the SouthShore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Tampa Bay Times.

These two communities of SouthShore offer the ideal blend of natural beauty, relaxation and recreation. The area combines both waterfront and rural communities that are fast becoming business destinations as Tampa Bay grows.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in June, 1939, to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety.

Wounded Warriors in Action Headquartered in Apollo Beach Florida, the WWIA is dedicated to serving our nation’s combat wounded, Purple Heart recipients, by providing world-class outdoor sporting activities.

Ruskin Seafood Festival Saturday, November 5, 2016 Sunday, November 6, 2016 E.G. Simmons Park 2401 19th Avenue, N.W., Ruskin, 33570 For the past 27 years, on the first weekend in November, Ruskin serves up a seafood lover’s dream, and this year’s two-day Seafood Festival will be no exception.

Savory offerings from the sea, boats, arts & crafts, plus tons of entertainment for all ages will once again mark this annual gathering in E.G. Simmons Park. Clams, grouper, mullet, shrimp, seafood chowder and more will satisfy the hungry palates of the thousands who attend the largest community event in south Hillsborough County.

Ruskin’s Seafood Festival 2015, featured a diverse musical lineup on the Clam Jam Stage including Reggae, Country, Spanish, Pop/Rock, Blues and more. Over 100 vendors in all including delicious seafood vendors, commercial, arts & crafts, nonprofit, environmental and boating. The Kid’s Guppies R Guppies area was once again a huge hit with it’s variety of fun and hands on experiences!

This well-attended event is also pet friendly, though leashes are required.

Admission: Adults $5 / Children under 12 and active military (with ID) – Free.

Free parking – a shuttle runs from the parking area to the main gate / VIP and handicap parking at the main gate.

There is a $2 entry fee per carload (money goes directly to Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation).

Friends and neighbors come together in this annual patriotic event honoring the men and women who served this country. The parade starts promptly at 11 a.m. and everyone meets at VFW Post #6287 following the parade for an afternoon of family fun, including music, food and the awards ceremony.

Tony has seen Ruskin grow from a small farming town to a developing community just outside of Tampa. Though most of his time is dedicated to the family-owned Zipperer’s Funeral Home, Tony’s personally devoted to the local VFW and has served as both past commander and district commander. The bond goes deep.

“I’m a veteran of Desert Storm, but a lot of the guys in the VFW served in Vietnam.

There’s a special bond between us,” he said. “It’s a real community.”

Known as someone who finds it hard to say no when asked to volunteer, Tony serves on the SouthShore Chamber’s board of directors, and was a past president of the (then) Ruskin Chamber of Commerce.

Should the governor ever need an economic development ambassador for Ruskin, John would be the guy. Every candidate for public office whose district represents greater Ruskin receives a VIP tour of the area. John shows them the sights of a community embracing the future, points out businesses like Amazon’s new package center, the recently opened Ruskin Community College (with a current enrollment of 7,000), the newly commissioned Lennard High School and the new middle school. Then they enjoy lunch with a few of Ruskin’s movers and shakers, all on his own dime. Why? “We’re an ideal place for economic development dollars,” he said. “We’re changing from a farming to a bedroom community, and I want politicians to know where we are, and how close we are to Tampa. I want them to know just how remarkable we are here in Ruskin.”

Tampa Bay Times columnist Ernest Hooper called Queena a beacon of hope.

She surely is.

After surviving a brutal attack at the Bloomingdale Library more than seven years ago, Queena’s courage and her family’s devotion to the healing process have galvanized a community around her recovery.

Queena’s recovery has been remarkable, and her medical team is hopeful she’ll once again speak.

Until then, she receives the best care and support from a community that shares in her victories and delights in her growing smile.

After raising nearly $7,000 last year for her chosen charity, Hooked on Hope, Vickie earned the title Honorary Mayor of SouthShore, a title she treasures. The long-time owner of Victoria’s 5th Avenue Salon, Vickie has always been an integral part of the community she loves. “It’s the people,” she stressed. “Everyone is friendly and incredibly supportive. I’ve been able to double the size of my business in the 23 years I’ve been here; I couldn’t have done it without the support of the people and the business community.” As honorary mayor, she presides over area ribbon-cuttings and volunteers at dozens of festivals and events in SouthShore.

Not one to toot her own horn, Vickie admits she enjoys the “notoriety” of being the honorary mayor.

“It’s a remarkable community,” she said. “And a real honor to be part of it.”

Known as the largest Toys for Tots collection in Hillsborough County, Don Pearson is hosting the US Marine event again this year. Pearson is confident area businesses will beat 2014’s record toy collection of 152 boxes and 83 bikes. The annual SouthShore collection party, featuring “food for miles,” generally draws 200-300 people, and only requires a toy (or cash) for admission. “It’s wonderful to see so many people willing to make Christmas special to children who otherwise might not have a happy holiday,” he said. Any remaining toys are distributed throughout the county to those in need.

A violent attack by her estranged husband six years ago left Audrey with burns over 80% of her body, and a life in shambles. Since, the Apollo Beach mother of two has rebuilt her life, and nurtured a commitment to give back to the community that offered support and encouragement in her darkest hours. Audrey recently completed her AA degree and will attend USF in January to pursue a degree in the business of non-profits “My vision is to create an agency that offers long-term support to every family that comes to us for help. To be there for them, act as their life coach, and help them get on solid ground.” she said. Though a nationally known speaker, and a board member with “Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence,” Audrey’s vision is local. “The support I received from the community has truly inspired my path,” she said. “To be able to give back is not only a calling, it is an absolute honor.”

John Lawson

Every December, as he has for the past 10 years, John suits up in a big red suit, brushes out his long white beard and brings Santa Claus to hundreds of area children and adults. “For a long time we didn’t have anyone playing Santa in Ruskin,” he said. “Once I had the farm, it seemed like a natural extension of a Christmas project a few friends and I started in Palmetto years ago.

“Plus, I have the body for it,” he laughed. John, who is co-owner of Hydro Harvest Farms in Ruskin, spends hours sitting in for Santa, poses for photos and listens to the heartfelt wishes of children (and a few older adults) with hope in their heart. “It’s all about spreading the joy of the season,” he said. How remarkably Santa-like!

Tour De SouthShore Once a quarter, the chamber hosts this fabulous “field trip for adults,” one of the most unique networking and fun opportunities of the year. The day starts with breakfast, continues on a guided tour bus, stops for lunch and visits approximately 10 area businesses, including a nonprofit, food establishment and a hidden gem.

Stops along the tour give a behind the scenes look at their establishment and you learn so much about what is in the SouthShore community.

Fred & Polly Rothenbush It’s hard to contain the enthusiasm of these two longtime residents of Ruskin. Not that you would want to, considering all they do for the community. Fred, an accomplished painter, and Polly, a retired schoolteacher, manage to stay busy helping those who need help. “We’ll do anything for kids. Soldiers, individuals, special groups, especially kids’ groups. It’s all about giving back,” Fred said. An oil painter of some renown, John gives away half the revenue from signed prints of his paintings. Those contributions, and the time Polly spends volunteering with the schools, and echoes the sentiments of others: “It’s the people that make SouthShore so remarkable.

“They don’t have to know you to help you,” he said. “That’s pretty special.”

Listening to Steve Alvarez talk about his dad, Jose, is to hear the depth of love, affection and profound admiration of a son for his father.

“He honestly, genuinely cared about people, about everyone. His family, of course, but he always thought about the needs of his clients, even before his own needs.” Steve said.

In addition to the CPA firm, Jose coached two soccer teams, was president of the soccer league and still found time to attend his sons’ games.

“He was great!” Steve said. “One season, a coach quit and my dad took over. Somehow, he managed to get that group of misfits to win the Brandon Cup! It was remarkable. He was remarkable.” Jose also took an active role in the business community serving on the board of the Apollo Beach chamber of commerce.

In memory of Both Anne Madden and Jose Alvarez relentlessly shared their amazing gifts with the community, and we’re the better for it. They left us too soon, but their legacy will remain.

David Madden didn’t hesitate a minute. “Anne was remarkable in how giving she was of herself to others and causes. She was involved in a lot of different charities over the years, and served on several boards of directors,” he said. “She wasn’t a flashy person, but one who enjoyed working behind the scenes,” related her husband of nearly 29 years. “It was always about others.” For 15 years, Anne owned a frame shop in Ruskin.

After it closed, she devoted more of her time to volunteer work, seeking something that challenged her emotionally, religiously, and intellectually. “She found that in the Good Samaritan Mission in Wimauma.” By the time she passed away, David said, she had become their voice.
