SHOPPING AROUND IN TIMES OF CHANGE
I Photo by Brian James
used to spend days shopping at every grocery store in the area for foods that a group of volunteer panelists would sample for Taster’s Choice, a food-comparison feature for the Tampa Bay Times. Our goal: to help shoppers navigate grocery stores, where product options can be overwhelming. When the pandemic shutdowns began, we decided the column needed to pause, too. At the time, grocery stores were facing shortages and food insecurity in our community was increasing. We didn’t think it was a good idea to rate products when manufacturers were struggling to fill orders and shoppers were having trouble finding some basic necessities. Since March 12, the day I left my office for the last time, I have not visited a grocery store. I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed grocery shopping. Now, I have
learned a whole new set of navigation rules. I belong to a couple of delivery programs and I have ordered groceries that can be delivered to my car without personal contact. Sometimes, ordering food online takes as long as driving myself to the store, shopping, paying and loading my groceries into the car. Often, the stores are out of the items I prefer. More than once, when I have ordered two apples, I’ve received two bags of apples instead. And because I am so familiar with local grocery stores, I know where to find the products I like to buy. Not all of my delivery service shoppers have been able to locate preferred items like pine nuts or Irish Swiss cheese. I have learned to roll with it, thankful I can still get food and essentials. Shopping now is definitely different, but it’s still something I enjoy.

Hoop earrings are definitely hot right now. We see them on the cover of fashion magazines. Celebrities are wearing them in their Instagram posts. And Ree Drummond, a.k.a. the Pioneer Woman, wore a large pair of colorful hoops during a recent episode of her cooking show. With so many of us working from home, it’s nice to jazz up our wardrobes, at least from the waist up, for virtual meetings. Hoops are the way to make a statement. We found several options of fun and fabulous earrings from local designers and area shops. — Kathy Saunders • Photos by Brian James

FACE S
TAMPA MAYOR JANE CA STOR
What do you envy about the other side of the bay? KRISEMAN: I love the Riverwalk. While we’re a waterfront city, it’s more of a closed area. In Tampa, they are able to do things like turn the river green and use water taxis to transport visitors. CASTOR: Probably the new St. Pete Pier. We are so lucky to live in this beautiful Tampa Bay region, and our waterfront is one of our greatest treasures. So any opportunity to get out by the water is a win in my book.

LEADING THE BAY Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman have been at the helm as the Tampa Bay area has navigated COVID-19, antiracism protests and uncharted economic waters. We asked both of them a series of the same questions to see if they foresee calmer seas ahead.
22 / bay
Do you anticipate Super Bowl 55 will be scaled down, but still offer Tampa Bay’s trademark “super” hospitality? What are you telling hoteliers, restaurateurs, etc.? KRISEMAN: The hard part is that it’s really hard to foresee the future. Certainly hotels can reopen and you’ll be able to have events, but what we can expect about the businesses and the extent of what we can do is unknown. Hopefully, we will have a vaccine or treatments to combat COVID-19. Our hope is that by the end of this year, there’s at least that reducing impact that changes the dynamic. CASTOR: I think the NFL knows how to put on an epic show and there’s no better place than right here in Tampa Bay. We are working with the NFL to ensure we can have the best Super Bowl ever in our city while keeping our community and our visitors safe. There will certainly be additional safety measures and we are still working on some of the details as we continue monitoring COVID-19, but I can assure you that we are fully committed to working with the Super Bowl team and our tourism partners to create a fun, safe and unforgettable experience. Has there been any work on your part in trying to secure the Rays team, and what has the pandemic done to the team’s chances of staying in the Tampa Bay area? KRISEMAN: I spoke to Stu Sternberg at the beginning of this and we agreed there will be times for those discussions, but now is not the time. I don’t know what the impact has been but I do think the relationship between the team and the community has been reaffirmed. In that respect, it has been positive. The Rays have been fantastic, especially considering this is a challenging time for baseball organizations and players. From the food drives, to providing resources to our Fighting Chance Fund, they’ve been a great community partner. We appreciate all of our Tampa Bay sports teams. (We claim the Bucs and Lightning as ours, too.) CASTOR: She said this issue is “placed on hold.” Has the coronavirus “pause,” as some call it, accidentally allowed more time for something to be researched or developed? Will it help you change some things for the better? KRISEMAN: I actually think we’re going to come out pretty well on the other side of this. Businesses want to relocate here and we have weather
ST. PE TER SB U RG MAYOR RICK K RISEMAN
and climate that might even help contain the virus. We also don’t have the density problem that can help spread the disease. And, we have a good amount of business space. Also, mass transit, which has been a weakness in the past, might not be as much of a problem because that’s where so much of the virus has spread. CASTOR: It is my hope that despite all the hardships COVID-19 has created, that there can also be some good that comes from it. That while we were all staying home, entrepreneurs and creatives were thinking of new business ideas and solutions to problems facing our city. Our City of Tampa team, for example, has worked around the clock on creative messaging with murals, signs, campaigns and chalk art to ensure we left no stone unturned informing our community. We have also taken this time to review our own methods, activities and procedures to find ways we can improve or streamline. I also think a lot will change coming out of this pandemic and our community will be more mindful of things like personal space and washing our hands, which are all good things to keep in mind anyway. As the mayor of a waterfront city, what keeps you up at night? KRISEMAN: Climate change. Sea levels. Hurricanes. CASTOR: Sea level rise and the effects of climate change are serious concerns for our region. Tampa Bay is ground zero for sea level rise and the actions we take today will make a big impact on our future. Sustainability and resilience is one of my top priorities of transforming Tampa’s tomorrow because it is such an important issue facing us all. We have to do better to embrace sustainable solutions for our city, for our country and for our planet. And along with that, as a waterfront city, we also have to focus on resilience planning and ensuring Tampa is ready for any storm that comes our way. Right now we are in hurricane season and we are already taking majors steps to ensure our storm drains are clear and we have a plan in place in the event of a hurricane or storm surge. What do you think governing will be like in the new “normal”? Will you have to take a different approach to leading cities reeling from the pandemic? KRISEMAN: Interestingly, we have worked in partnership with five growth areas in the city, working to help them grow smarter. The study used to create the Grow Smarter strategy tells us these sectors are the most sustainable for St. Pete. The city, our new St. Pete Economic Development Corporation and our Chamber of Commerce have worked well together to relocate businesses to our city and to nurture the ones already here. While these types of businesses aren’t necessarily the local, independent shops we love and frequent so much in St. Pete, they are vital to our economy, employ countless people, pay high-wage salaries and help to elevate our profile. During the pandemic, they have proven to be very sustainable. We need to work to try to keep those businesses moving forward. CASTOR: What our community has been through these past few months
Photo courtesy of City of St. Petersburg
has undeniably changed us. Many have faced unprecedented hardships, including putting their lives on hold and facing unemployment. But we’ve also grown together and shown time and time again how resilient our city is. So yes, while it will take some time for our community to recover, hardships have never stopped us before. Our city is still on the rise and we will continue working together by uplifting our neighbors in need and ensure our comeback is greater than any setback. What’s your least favorite mayoral chore? KRISEMAN: Night meetings. I am in meetings all day long so night meetings aren’t my favorite. CASTOR: Paperwork. What is your favorite mayoral responsibility? KRISEMAN: Meeting with kids. I love when I get to speak with kids and try to help them be a positive impact on the community. CASTOR: Meeting with the community and everything else! — Kathy Saunders and Amy Scherzer bay / 23

COVER ART Masks from local designers
BY MAGGIE DUFFY Face masks are the “it” accessory of the moment. Local mask requirements have given us the opportunity to wear masks and also make them a fashion statement. Even nonmedical masks offer some protection from the spread of COVID-19, so why not make them fun? Designer brands are jumping on the trend, from St. John Knits — yes, some of them are actually knit — to Coach, with cheeky cotton ones embellished with unicorn and dinosaur appliques. And with all of the creative minds in the Tampa Bay area, it’s no surprise local designers are using their talents to make fashionable face masks. Here is a roundup of some of our favorites:
26 / bay
John Gascot
used the website Pixels to put his artwork on face masks, so wearing one is like being a walking canvas. Choices include the painterly “Horizons”; “Justice for All,” featuring Lady Liberties of multiple ethnicities; and “Pride Heart,” a heart painted over the rainbow flag (opposite page). $19. pixels.com. Photos courtesy of John Gascot
Jennifer Kosharek had her
artwork printed on fabric for masks. Some feature her signature, Russian doll-inspired character, Gretchen. One pattern includes the parrot from St. Petersburg’s Sunken Gardens and a flamingo. It’s so tropical it could be a beach mask. The masks have a pocket for a filter and elastic bands that go around the head. She makes children’s sizes, too. $20. etsy.com/ shop/kosharekart. Demeree Barth
makes washable, double-layered cotton masks in a variety of fabrics, including the ornate southwestern pattern, pictured. The masks have a pocket for a filter and elastic bands that go around the head. They also come in medium or large to ensure a good fit. $17. etsy.com/shop/demigodstudio. Cam Parker
is known for his portraits of celebrities, so it’s only natural that he would have them printed on face masks. He collaborated with Bizarro Designs, a Tampa-based full-service graphic design and multimedia production company, to create face coverings that can also double as headbands. Among the celebrities are Janet Jackson and Beyoncé. Other designs include Mother Earth, the cheeky phrase “You Don’t Even Naomi” and a repeated pattern of Kim Kardashian making the ugly cry face. $20. bizarrodesigns.com. Photo courtesy of Cam Parker
The Dalí Museum reopened to the
public on July 1 with a requirement that visitors must wear masks. They’re selling Dalí-inspired masks with an image of the artist’s famous mustache, so you can be just like him. Or try one made by museum volunteers and students of the Dalí’s fashion design program, available in the museum store for $6. 1 Dalí Blvd. (Bayshore Drive and Fifth Avenue SE), St. Petersburg. Matt Shapiro
The 1771 Designs line by features his images of local icons like the Sunshine Skyway bridge and the St. Petersburg pelican printed in vinyl and then painstakingly applied to black masks. The masks also feature bold statements, including “I hate wearing this (but I am)” and “Quit staring. Where’s yours?” And then there are playful ones, like a gigantic smile and a dog face. Masks are $12 and matching T-shirt/ mask combos are $28. 1771designs.com. Photo courtesy of Matt Shapiro
Chad Mize had a bunch of extra T-shirts bearing his
various iconic designs, including Mr. Sun and World Tour. So his friend Natalie Moore started sewing them into face coverings. They go over the head, loop around the ears and are long, so when you pull them down they can rest around the neck, making another fashion statement. $30. Elizabeth Carson Racker makes a variety of appealing masks. She sews
elegant masks that could be worn to formal events, some embellished with threads and beads, others with stunning African fabrics, with scarves and head wraps to match. And it doesn’t end there. She has Black Lives Matter masks, a Buccaneers mask and a Stormtrooper mask for the Star Wars-obsessed. She also makes kids’ masks. Masks are $15, and sets range from $20 to $30. elizabethcarsonracker. com. Photo courtesy of Elizabeth Carson Racker

PRETTY IN INK PHOTOS BY BRIAN JAMES
We fused the fashion industry with printing production for our factory-forward outfits this month. Our models wore lemon butter blazers and black peplum tops to sort printed pages from blank newsprint sheets at our Tampa Bay Times printing plant. The imposing presses were a sharp contrast to the glamorous designs, including a yellow chiffon gown with a train; a gold, ruched dress; and a ruffle mini dress with white, thigh-high patent leather boots. A red two-piece pantsuit and rhinestonepointed pumps were the outfit of choice for the printing units on Press #9, where ink is applied to the paper. Imagine wearing a sheer, floral, high-slit gown to toss papers from a delivery truck. And the models wore an emerald green peplum gown and a fuchsia glitter gown to lug the wrenches that tighten our printing plates. — Kathy Saunders

Normally, designers are putting the finishing touches on their creations now for next spring. Like us, most designers — particularly those in the fashion hub of New York City where the pandemic hit hard — are creating at home. Many are undecided about what fashion will look like next year. Will clothing lines be flush with sweatsuits and athletic wear? Will everything be black, brown or gray? Or will we be looking for a way to stand out and express ourselves in a world where we may still be stuck in our homes? Tampa’s Nancy Vaughn, of the White Book public relations and marketing agency, heads Tampa Bay Fashion Week, with events scheduled Sept. 23-26. For 12 years, the week has included a runway fashion show and private, designer cocktail parties. This year, the programs will be mostly virtual. An in-person designer shopping event with time-slotted appointments is still tentative. “We’re definitely doing something, but what it looks like — we don’t know,” she said. “There’s a collective disappointment all around.” Vaughn said local designers will curb collections for fall and spring. They will create fewer, but more useful pieces. She thinks white, tan and caramel will be popular colors and that most of us will depend on wardrobe staples rather than seasonal designs. Hang on to that pair of black pants, the denim jacket that goes with a long skirt or your favorite jeans, your go-to white blouse. “If we’re able to go out, I think that there’s going to be some desire, depending on where you are in the country, that people are going to want to just wear more versatile, better quality clothing,” Vaughn said. She’s not ruling out color. “I think there’s going to be a desire for color. Color does bring a lot of joy to people,” she said. Another buzzword in the designer world is sustainability. Vaughn said designers will continue their focus on more eco-friendly materials and longerlasting clothing. “The industry has taken a sharp turn on clothes that are cheaply made but fashionforward,” said designer Elizabeth Carson Racker, a Tampa native whose collections have been featured in local fashion week events. Working from her North Tampa studio, Carson Racker has two things in mind for the upcoming seasons. She said “pandemic” fashion must be affordable and it has to make a statement. For the fall and spring, Carson Racker is designing some of her popular kimono-inspired outfits, which she describes as “easy, breezy and washable.” She said her clients “want to go all out and look great but they also want to do it on a budget with

colors and brightness.” She’ll be designing oversized coverups for sure. “Here I feel like customers are getting into more ethnic or travel clothing — they want it to look like it’s from somewhere else — that it’s regal, it’s rich with color or embellishments or different sight lines in creativity,” she said. Rachel Alderson Baynard, a 2002 graduate of St. Petersburg High School, is an outerwear designer for American Eagle in New York City. She finished her spring line the day before her offices were shut down. Now, she is trying to develop collections for next summer from the desk in her cramped apartment. “I honestly don’t know what summer is going to look like just because it will be interesting to see that shift now that we are not in our offices,” she said. “We’ve all shifted from going outside to lounge wear, so that is affecting and will continue to affect my research.” Alderson Baynard is hoping for some bright spots and is craving a return to glittery, over-the-top clothes and accessories. “My thought and my wish is that it won’t be boring because I think people want hope and they want things to look forward to,” she said. “I want people to be able to lift their spirits with color. I always tend to gravitate toward the things that are bright and cheerful anyway — pandemic or not.” Joshua Williams, assistant professor of fashion management at Parsons School of Design in New York City, said he also expects color to be strong in 2021. He predicts there will be a desire for extravagance as people get tired of sweatpants and slippers, but designers won’t forsake slouch wear completely. “I do
think that designers are thinking about comfort and how to build that in and I think that’s definitely going to be a trend that we’ll see — a little bit more work-tohome wear,” he said. “There will probably be a little bit more of a minimalism. We’re not shopping in the same way now or we’re not shopping.” He’s counting on waist-up accessories to be big sellers with so many virtual meetings and events. Cue the statement necklace and silk scarf. “A lot of people are looking for a kind of party on the top with accessories that can make it look like you are more dressed up,” he said. He also thinks “street wear” is here to stay for another year. That’s the designer-meets-luxury items like Louis Vuitton sneakers and Chanel shorts. Anne Randell, senior vice president of marketing and e-commerce for J. McLaughlin in New York City, said the pandemic “is feeding into everything that we’re doing. We’re asking ‘How is the customer living? What are they doing?’ It’s that balance of comfortable clothes, more subdued tones, but also things that you can depend on.” Color and prints will be staying in the J. McLaughlin boutiques. “They are a big part of our DNA,” said Randell. “I think people are getting dressed for meetings and trying to get some sort of normalcy.” Fancy or funky, Vaughn of Tampa expects designers to come through for their customers. “What I think is this is interesting and scary too — it’s during these times that people get decision fatigue and they want people to tell them what to wear,” she said. “But the consumer is driving this. It’s going to be wild to watch all of this shake out.” bay / 47

love letters
“In this era of instantaneous communication, a letter is a rare and wondrous item.” Donovan Beeson, Letter Writers Alliance
BY KATHY SAUNDERS Social media and easy smartphone communication have made letter writers a dying breed. But they aren’t going out quietly. Letter-writing clubs are active locally, nationally and internationally. And many people still feel passionate about beautiful stationery. “A letter is a gift of one’s time. It’s a tangible representation of someone’s concern for another,” said Donovan Beeson, who with her spouse, Kathy Zadrozny, has spent the past 13 years leading the Letter Writers Alliance, an international group dedicated to preserving the art of letter writing. “Even the smallest, simplest note can have a big impact.” Beeson says letters are appreciated. “The only people who don’t appreciate them are the ones who aren’t sending them.” The couple decided this summer to shutter their Chicago-based alliance, but the 20,000 members will continue in letter-writing clubs that promote the cause. Ironically, many of the members were connected through their website, letterwriters.org, but the

ensuing communications are handwritten. “We aren’t anti-email; we are proreal mail. Mainly, we just want people to write more letters,” Beeson said. Making time is the key. “Every time you write an email or make a phone call, ask this question: ‘Is what I have to say to this person worth more than five minutes of my time?’ If the answer is yes, then put down that receiver and back away from the monitor,” Beeson wrote on the website. “One cannot hold an email and marvel about how they are touching the same object that someone else held thousands of miles away. A letter is proof of history, an artifact of one’s life and community.” For years, Tona Bell has been the local connection to the alliance from her Tampa business, the Paper Seahorse. When the pandemic forced her to close her physical location, she moved her stationery sales online to paperseahorse. com. “I have been writing letters since I was really little. I was raised that way,” said Bell. “My first pen pals were my grandmothers. I had my city grandmother and my country grandmother.” Bell continues to lead the Tampa Bay Letter Writers group “dedicated to those interested in letter writing, snail mail and mail art.” She hopes to continue

letter-writing socials and special events, particularly geared toward children, when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. “Our goal is to keep putting pen to paper, typing and keeping the written word alive,” she said. “People need a digital detox. They need to slow down. They really need to get in touch with themselves and get in touch with others and have a real conversation,” she said. “Letters do that.” Alexandra Stoddard wrote a book about letter writing, Gift of a Letter. She lists her home address on her author website and encourages fans and friends to send handwritten correspondence. Stoddard writes about traveling to Paris and seeking out her favorite paper store. She gathered notebooks, cards, sheets of lined paper and whimsical pencils. “A letter or note can be as lovely to look at as it is luxurious to read,” she says in Gift of a Letter. “Today, the popular perception is that letters are ubiquitous, old hat and banal. But the truth is, a personal letter can be one of the most intimate and touching of human expressions, one to another. A letter is a gift signature of you,” she writes. Letter-writing enthusiasts are big supporters of the U.S. Postal Service. “You can connect for 55 cents anywhere in this country via a service that is not supported by taxes. It is impossible to understate the importance of this service and how essential it is to all,” Beeson said.
Getting started • Find a comfortable writing spot. • Use a nice pen and have a variety of papers, cards, envelopes and stamps. “Pretty blank note cards inspire me to say ‘hi’ to a friend,” author Alexandra Stoddard writes. • Practice. “Practice helps make something that is potentially uncomfortable comfortable,” Stoddard says. • Look for inspiration. “I always have a small bud vase with at least one fresh flower placed in front of me on my writing desk for inspiration,” Stoddard says. • Close your eyes and think about what you want to say. • Be prepared by having the correct name spellings, addresses and zip codes ready before you begin. Alexandra Stoddard, Gift of a Letter
Stoddard keeps her letters to preserve the memories. She often re-reads them for encouragement and enrichment. “An inspired letter can be as riveting as a stare. It can move us to tears, spur us to action, provoke us, uplift us, touch us. Transform us,” she writes. “When written from the heart, letters are dreams on paper, wishes fulfilled, desired satisfied.”

The St. Petersburg Opera hosted its annual Bella Voce benefit online, featuring an edited montage of 21 tenors from across the country.
St. Petersburg Opera Virtual Bella Voce Vincero
Mark Sforzini.
Coronavirus stay-at-home orders actually helped spread the talent of the St. Petersburg Opera, a major goal of the troupe celebrating 14 seasons of making opera accessible. Emcee Jason Alpert and maestro Mark Sforzini presented a virtual Bella Voce Vincero gala and auction to 200 supporters on YouTube, Facebook and the opera’s website. Prerecorded performances included local opera stars and a rendition of Turandot’s Nessun Dorma by 21 tenors, all St. Petersburg Opera alums. Each $10 registration fee earned a $40 match donation, and each $150 VIP ticket received a wine-paired dinner delivered from Parkshore Grill. The finale: Sforzini’s world-champion Hula-Hoop skills. Menorah Manor 35th Anniversary Bucket List Ball

Adapting to ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis has become the new normal at Menorah Manor, and that included moving the 35th anniversary Bucket List Ball online, where 300 guests “virtually” supported the St. Petersburg nursing home and assisted living residence. Chairwoman Susie Berman sent buckets with gourmet treats to more than 80 sponsors to enjoy during the show, which featured a rap video with residents and “hero staff.” Emcee Jason Alpert’s auction and donor appeal met the goal of raising enough money to buy 75 beds and fund other needs.

American Heart Association Tampa Bay Heart Ball
Chris and Kristin Gambino.
Gowns, tuxedos, even shoes were optional when the American Heart Association reinvented its 62nd annual Tampa Bay Heart Ball with emcee Stacie Schaible, WFLA-Ch. 8 news anchor, hosting for nearly 400 supporters signed on to Zoom. Co-chairmen Chuck Sykes and Paul Reilly, AHA executive director Amanda Palumbo and AHA board president Dr. Javier Cuevas thanked the virtual attendees for donating and bidding up luxury auction items to raise $1.6 million for heart and stroke research and community initiatives. Board chairman Trey Traviesa introduced 2021 chairman Ron Christaldi from an intimate watch party at DeVito’s Italian Specialties. Tampa musical family Colt Clark and the Quarantine Kids wrapped up the evening with a heartwarming performance. Photos courtesy of the American Heart Association

Beloved Beauty and the Beast should have been the 2020 fairy tale spinning through the Ronald McDonald House Charities’ annual “Storybook Ball.” Instead, the coronavirus pandemic kept guests at home, where they supported a lively virtual fundraiser for four local houses. Executive director Lisa Suprenand and emcee Don Germaise welcomed celebrities, patients’ families and donors during the auction and program on Facebook, with more than 1,000 views during the hourlong benefit. The event raised $272,000. Photos courtesy of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay

Q& A
before we go STEWART CLARK BUSCH GARDENS AND ADVENTURE ISLAND PRESIDENT Stewart Clark, 55, took over as president of Busch Gardens and Adventure Island in January 2017. He has spent 30 years in the theme park industry, rising through the ranks of SeaWorld Entertainment parks across the country. Since he arrived at Busch Gardens, he has overseen the opening of new rides, such as Tigris, North America’s tallest launch coaster, and expanded the park’s special events, including its spring Food and Wine Festival and a new Bier Fest. We recently caught up with Clark. What’s your favorite thing to eat at the park? That’s an unfair question because it’s going to make somebody mad in the park. We are really known for our burgers and the food and wine offerings. I’m going to have to go with our barbecue restaurant and the brisket sampler. What’s your favorite park that is not Busch Gardens? Why? Easy one: Discovery Cove. I was part of that team for a long, long time, and that truly is my favorite destination. It’s such a unique park and a unique offering. If you and your family had the park all to yourselves one day, what would you do? My family was jealous when the park was closed that they did not have it all to ourselves. But we stuck to our commitment to keep it closed during the pandemic and only had employees there to take care of the grounds and the animals. My family is definitely more inclined toward the animal part of the park, though my sons love the coasters. I saw that your degree is specialized in implied behavior analysis. What has working in the theme park industry taught you about the way people like to be entertained? For years I worked with animals the first part of my career. With animal behavior we focus only on the positive, so my experience in dealing with animals for so many years and my education in applied behavior is really that it just solidified with me the answer is all about the positives. People come to the theme park to relax and enjoy with their family. We are not just working at little Busch Gardens, you are creating these memories and these moments for families that hopefully they will remember for the rest of their lives. — Sharon Kennedy Wynne
