Gayle Guyardo’s wellness journey

BY KATHY SAUNDERS If you miss Gayle Guyardo on Tampa’s WFLA-Ch. 8, you’ll love her encore chapter as head of network development for the new channel Health News Network (HNN).

The effervescent journalist helped create “sHEALed,” a docuseries about women’s health and the environment. It debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May. In her new role, Guyardo curates programming for the international streaming channel, collaborating with HNN producers TereZa Hakobyan-Lolli and Anthony Lolli of Lolli Brands Entertainment and Biohack Yourself Media. In future interviews, Guyardo plans to explore biological dentistry, studying links between oral health and overall well-being; hormone therapy; menopause; and foods grown in regenerated soil.

“I admire (my producers) because they are trying to change the health of the entire country,” Guyardo said. “HNN is going to give people the opportunity to say what they want to say, and they will own their platform.”

Resiliency and reinvention are Guyardo’s superpowers. On air, she was the face of the morning news on Tampa’s Ch. 8 for 26 years and the popular host of “Bloom,” the channel’s daily health and wellness 8 | B AY M A G A Z I N E | A U G U S T 2 0 2 6

program, for another six years. Off set, she was a self-described mess.

“I was 25 pounds heavier, I was shaking, my hair was falling out and I was wearing a wig on air,” Guyardo said. She also suffered from calluses on her vocal cords. While filming “Bloom,” she interviewed a variety of medical practitioners who eventually helped her navigate her own health, diagnosing her with hypothyroidism and providing a road map to wellness.

“The guests on my show would be the pathway to my own health. They approached medicine very differently,” Guyardo said. One of those guests was Dr. Tami Oberbroeckling, founder of Tampa

Bay Total Wellness in South Tampa, who eventually helped Guyardo lose weight and manage her medications and hormones, which, she said, improved her overall health and hair growth.

Based on her personal experiences, Guyardo, 59, has fully embraced holistic medicine and regularly works out. She also hosts live virtual education workshops and wellness resets. She’s hoping to bring that wellness approach to an international audience in her new role, and hints that she may have her own show in the future.

Available on Amazon Prime Video, the “sHEALed” docuseries is a prototype for programming planned for HNN. Best of all, her departure from “Bloom” opens a fun new chapter for Guyardo, who promised her husband, Mark Pichowski, more family adventures traveling with their four daughters, ages 18 to 28. Guyardo just celebrated a new milestone with her youngest daughter, who will attend Guyardo’s alma mater, Auburn University, this fall. Her encore career shines bright, as does her personal life, helping women of all ages live life better with trusted health news and reporting.

Signs of an unhealthy gut include frequent stomach upset, food intolerance, unintended weight fluctuation, skin irritation, autoimmune disorders, frequent headaches, excessive fatigue, and changes in mood and bathroom

habits. Keep a food journal to track these symptoms and ask your doctor for guidance.

Pain management Mind-body therapies can help ease pain, including physical therapy, mindful meditation, yoga and stretching, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, and progressive muscle relaxation.

Make small changes. Start with eating seasonally, reading ingredient labels carefully, eliminating sugars, nixing processed foods and practicing portion control. You don’t have to swap out cake for carrots on your birthday, but replacing ingredients or baking instead of buying a cake mix is a good start. Choose nuts over chips for a snack, or an apple with peanut butter, and add an extra helping of veggies to every meal, including your omelets.

Work with a dietitian. With her “St. Pete Eats” podcast and popular TV cooking appearances, dietitian Wendy Wesley is a trusted Tampa Bay source.

Her upcoming book, “Hot Flash Kitchen,” focuses on nutrition and diet to help women deal with menopause symptoms.

It’s easier to navigate nutrition when you can talk to an expert, and as a dietitian, Wesley provides evidence-based,

practical guidance to help individuals navigate their food and health journeys, tailored for any health conditions.

“I offer personalized product recommendations for shopping and cooking tips, and help my patients achieve their goals,” Wesley said.

Protein is good and processed foods are bad, but vegetables and fiber are the stars of the show, said Wesley, who advocates for adding fermented foods as well as beans, chickpeas and lentils to your diet. She also suggests making breakfast tacos to boost cardiac health.

Easy Breakfast Tacos 1 can black, pinto or red beans, drained and rinsed 1 onion, chopped 1 pepper, chopped ¼ cup precooked rice or quinoa ¼ cup precooked potatoes, chopped

1 tablespoon olive oil Salt, pepper, and spices like cumin and chili powder 4 eggs 4 high-fiber, whole-wheat tortillas

Mix the beans, onions and peppers, rice or quinoa, and potatoes in a warm pan in olive oil. Add spices. Heat through the ingredients and add the eggs.

Gently cook the eggs, making sure not to overcook and dry them out. Place all the ingredients in the high-fiber tortillas and use these recommended toppings: avocado, salsa and cheese add fat and fiber. Save time by cooking the potatoes and rice or quinoa in advance.

t’s universally known that the arts make us feel good, but now scientific research says they’re good for us. Tampa Bay offers dozens of wellness programs incorporating art, music and dance at local hospitals, museums and performing arts venues.

Moffitt’s Arts in Medicine The arts’ importance to one’s overall health has long been a factor at Moffitt Cancer Center. Its Arts in Medicine program started in 1998, with just one employee who visited patients at their bedsides.

Today, the program has six team members, two studio spaces, an art gallery and multiple art carts. The program supports patients as well as

their caregivers, hospital staff and volunteers, who can visit the art studios on weekdays to make expressive art projects like watercolor and silk paintings.

One of the studios also has musical instruments, including crystal singing bowls, and the Arts in Medicine Music program features live performances in the lobbies, as well as private performances in patients’ hospital rooms.

“Our two musicians on our team are graduates of the Music for Healing & Transition program, so they are certified music practitioners,” said Amanda Bonanno, Moffitt’s Arts in Medicine program coordinator. “They are trained to assess a patient’s needs, meet them where they are and play accordingly, so every interaction is different — there is no setlist when they walk into a room.”

Arts & Mind Village The Straz Center for the Performing Arts’ multifaceted Arts and Health program includes the Arts & Mind Village series in partnership with Johns Hopkins University’s International Arts + Mind Lab. Held earlier this year, the program’s Arts & Mind Village Convening centered around the idea that all levels of creativity, from dance to theater to storytelling, “are important in terms of really awakening the natural medicines of the body,” said Fred Johnson, the Straz Center’s artist in residence and community engagement specialist.

Johnson said the scientists are sharing research and ideas with arts communities that explain how the body responds positively to creative stimuli, such as music.

“The frequency or the vibration of the human voice awakens the vagus nerve,” Johnson said. “It’s sort of the superhigh-

way of the nervous system, and so when the vagus nerve vibrates, it sends a signal, if you will, to the rest of the nervous system. It sends a sense of calm and also amplifies the creation of nitric oxide, which is good for the heart and many other elements in the body.” strazcenter. org/community-impact/arts-and-health

Freeman Sound’s MINDSET Music is at the heart of Freeman Sound’s mission to “create a positive mindset, reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, support community mental health awareness and prevent suicide” by harnessing the power of music. Sarah McAdoo and Marie Parham launched this organization after Kyle Freeman, McAdoo’s son and Parham’s partner, passed away after a struggle with bipolar disorder.

An avid musician and DJ, Freeman lived and breathed music. Knowing how beneficial music was to Freeman, the organization’s MINDSET series features performances by electronic dance music DJs and performers to help people release stress and connect through dance and music.

“When we host these concerts, we invite you to come out of your hiding place, and let your body go a little bit,” McAdoo said.

“There’s a certain common denominator to the beat, the drum and people connecting to that rhythm.”

Freeman Sound also partners with St. Pete’s Suite E Studios on the Creatives Support Group, where people can gather for discussions moderated by a licensed mental health professional.

“We realize that (we really count on) a lot of these local musicians and artists, and they’ve got to be mentally stable to produce and continue that art form,” McAdoo said. “So, part of that for us is keeping the creatives in our own community healthy, because without them, we wouldn’t have this vibrant art scene.” freemansound.org

everal Tampa Bay healthcare systems are introducing innovative technologies and treatment options that are giving physicians new tools to improve patient outcomes, reduce side effects and expand access to advanced medical care.

“The biggest difference with this device is it doesn’t have an implanted generator — it’s external,” said Dr. Julia Pfaff, a board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon who has been performing the procedure for nearly a year.

From a next-generation sleep apnea implant to a collaborative innovation hub and one of the nation’s most advanced forms of radiation therapy, the new programs reflect a growing emphasis on technology-driven healthcare.

The outpatient procedure requires a single incision to implant the stimulator.

Patients wear a small adhesive patch with an external battery beneath the chin while sleeping, allowing the device to connect wirelessly with the implant.

New sleep apnea treatment Florida Medical Clinic at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital is offering Genio therapy, an FDA-approved, mask-free treatment for adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who cannot tolerate traditional continuous positive airway pressure (also known as CPAP) therapy.

The system uses a small, battery-free neurostimulator implanted beneath the chin. The device gently stimulates the hypoglossal nerve, causing tongue muscles to contract and helping keep the airway open during sleep.

At the heart of the Tampa Medical & Research District in Ybor City, Tampa General Hospital has opened a 32,000-square-foot Innovation Center designed to accelerate the development and testing of new healthcare technologies. The facility brings together physicians, researchers, technology companies and entrepreneurs to collaborate on solutions aimed at improving patient care.

Among the center’s features is a “hospital room of the future” where clinicians can evaluate emerging medical technologies before they are introduced into patient care. The facility also includes production studios, classrooms, event space, and an artificial intelligence laboratory focused on emerging technologies and workforce education.

“Innovation is a mindset,” Arnold said.

“It’s part of our culture at Tampa General Hospital, and it can’t be occasional. It has to be intentional, repeatable and connected to the real needs of the people we serve.”

Another major initiative is the hospital’s Hospital at Home program, which helps train medical professionals to safely care for eligible acute-care patients in their homes instead of traditional hospital rooms.

The center also provides an environment where medical teams can test new technologies before implementing them throughout the hospital system. “Our vision is aligned with being the safest and most innovative academic health system

in America,” Arnold said.

Rachel Feinman, senior vice president of innovation, ventures and digital solutions at Tampa General Hospital and managing director of TGH Ventures, said collaboration is essential to the center’s mission. “I think one of the things we benefit from the most is having all of our team members engaged in innovation throughout the Tampa General system in the same place,” Feinman said.

“When we talk about personalized medicine, and we think of the ideal weapon for targeting the cancer cells while protecting normal tissue, proton therapy is very high on the list of tools that we could offer cancer patients,” said Dr. Lorraine Portelance, vice chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center.

The treatment can be used for many types of solid tumors, including cancers of the brain, head and neck, lung, prostate, gastrointestinal tract, gynecologic system, and certain breast cancers. The noninvasive outpatient treatment typically takes about 10 minutes per session and is repeated over multiple appointments, depending on the patient’s treatment plan.

Enjoy art, video exhibits at the Tampa Museum of Art One of the best things to do during August’s scorching summer days is to visit a museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art has so many exhibits open, there’s truly something for everyone.

“Eye of the Beholder: The William Knight Zewadski Legacy” features objects from Zewadski’s eclectic art collection (on view through Jan. 3, 2027). “Avant Garde: Remarkable Women in the Permanent Collection” includes artists tied to Tampa

Bay, including Selina Román, Ya La’ford, Nneka Jones, Wendy Babcox and Lorraine Genovar (on view through April 4, 2027).

“Here and Now: Selections from the Contemporary Collection” nods to modern art practices and sensibilities (on view through Jan. 31, 2027). “Charles Atlas: Kiss the Day Goodbye” is a video installation Atlas made during a residency in Captiva Island through the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, inspired by the Gulf of Mexico (on view through Oct. 4).

“Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith” For those who embrace the summer heat, it’s the perfect time to bask in nature at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota. Known as the Living Museum, art and artists play a major role in its programming, so much so that legendary musician, writer and artist Patti Smith is its artist in residence. We encounter the photography of Smith’s friend Lynn Goldsmith in the exhibition “Shared Light: Lynn Goldsmith.” The two met in the 1970s and soon Smith became Goldsmith’s muse, revealed through her striking photographs of the musician.

They are paired with Goldsmith’s soft-focus photographs of flowers in The Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum of Botany & the Arts (which is indoors, so soak up the AC), where the interior walls are painted black to let the photos gleam.

Goldsmith said they’re purposefully displayed to establish the timeline of their friendship because, for her, “friendship goes through many of the same changes as the life of a flower.” Outdoors, large-scale photos of the flowers are placed along the path, inviting communion. That also feels by design.

“I feel very reverential, particularly about flowers and certain aspects of nature; it’s what seemingly connects me to a higher power, a better world, another planet, which I would prefer,” Goldsmith said. On view through Sept. 13. selby.org

“Whip It”: Devo I don’t often include music in this column, but given how arty new wave band Devo is, this seems appropriate. They’re playing The BayCare Sound in Clearwater on Aug. 27, and word is their live shows are epic, marked by creative costume changes, vivid visuals and robotic choreography, not to mention synth-driven rhythms blended with punk music. Founded in the 1970s by two sets of brothers, the current lineup is led by original founders Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale. Check

Jobsite Theater’s “Penelope” We’re all familiar with the epic story of Odysseus, but have we ever considered how his wife felt about him being gone for so long? That’s the premise of Jobsite Theater’s new musical, “Penelope.” The one-woman folk-pop musical stars artistic associate Colleen Cherry, who will be backed by an onstage band as she describes her loneliness and her faith — but she’s going to need a drink to do it.

Make-A-Wish Southern Florida Wishmaker’s Ball: “A Night in the Tropics” From meeting a sports hero to becoming a firefighter for a day to swimming with dolphins, 100 critically ill children are about to see their dreams fulfilled, made possible by $1 million-plus raised by Make-A-Wish Southern Florida supporters at the annual Wishmaker’s Ball. More than 500 guests escaped to “A Night in the Tropics” at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street on May 16, bidding up luxury auction packages and dancing to live music by Old Dominion. The Florida Aquarium supporters and sharks glided through the Coral Reefs habitat, each species fascinated by the other, at the World Ocean Day Soirée on June 6. Moving outside, the 300 guests discovered tropical cocktails and sunset breezes, lobster rolls and boozy snow cones, and much more. They cruised aboard the Bay Spirit II; visited with a sloth, penguin, python and anteater; and danced to live music by the #NoFilter band. In style and solidarity, the Jazzy Juneteenth Jubilee marked June 19, 1865 — the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. The 400 guests arrived with elaborate décor and dinner spreads as they vied to win Most Historic, Elegant, Whimsical or Creative table. Judges faced equally tough choices picking Best Dressed Male, Female and Couple, with many dressed in the bold Juneteenth palette of red, green, yellow and black. Voices of Hope for Aphasia Word Play

Crossword clues, word searches and plenty of teamwork had guests racing against the clock at Word Play, an annual benefit for Voices of Hope for Aphasia, a nonprofit that supports free educational programs and social gatherings for people living with aphasia, an acquired language disorder that affects communication but not intelligence. Heart of Adoptions Alliance A Legacy of Love Gala The A Legacy of Love gala was both a celebration and a tribute as Tampa attorney Jeanne Tate, founder of Heart of Adoptions and the Heart of Adoptions Alliance (HOAA), marked her 70th birthday surrounded by friends and some of the hundreds of families whose lives she has changed through her 40-plus years practicing adoption law and advocating for adoption reform.
