Acultural exchange between Westmont Middle and High School and students from Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba, facilitated by Experiences Canada, exemplified the transformative power of cross-cultural experiences. This dynamic week not only merged cultures but also built lasting friendships and enriched understandings of shared histories and natural environments.
The week commenced at Westmont in Metchosin with a special assembly recognizing the traditional lands of the Sc’ianew and T’Sou-ke nations, setting a respectful tone. Students from both schools actively participated in diverse activities planned to deepen cultural appreciation and connection to nature. Highlights included hiking Mount Metchosin and enjoying a local salmon feast, which provided a direct experience of the coastal lifestyle and natural beauty of the West Coast.
An educational outing to the Royal BC Museum featured an Indigenous Innovations workshop, deepening the students’ appreciation of First Nations technologies and traditions. The adventure continued with a whale watching trip where students
encountered marine wildlife, bringing the lessons on ecological interconnectedness to life.
Meanwhile, an exploration of Victoria’s historic Chinatown offered insights into themes of migration and multiculturalism. The trek’s spirit of discovery extended into the physical challenge at WildPlay Adventure Park, where students faced and overcame fears, fostering personal growth and mutual support among peers.
The group’s activities culminated in a walk along the coast at East Sooke Park, highlighted by a stunning encounter with a humpback whale—a poignant reminder of the profound connections between land, sea, and humanity.
The exchange concluded with a community BBQ. It was an evening of sharing, reflecting, and celebrating the bonds forged over the week. These experiences underscore not only the joy and enlightenment that cultural exchanges bring but amplify the role they play in fostering global understanding and respect.
Such initiatives underline the significant impact of engaging directly with different cultures and are a testament to the enduring benefits of such educational encounters.
