1930 - 2020 George served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, during which he was involved in the Korean War. George spent over 1900 days at sea but when he was on dry land, he was a loving husband to Frances and kind, supportive father to Dan, Marg, Peter, and Bob.

A P.O.W. from 1939-1942 in a Siberian Gulag. After his release, a miracle that he survived, he fought with the Polish 2nd Corps during the Italian Campaign and received “The Cross of Monte Cassino”.

The Story of my Mother’s and Father’s life will never fade from our hearts or memory. We will honour both of you always.

Leading Seaman Norman Arthur Pimlott IN MEMORY OF OUR FAVOURITE VETERAN July 4th, 1925 - January 21st, 2023 RCNVR, North Atlantic Convoy Duty (Gunner). Served 3 1/2 years onboard HMCS Trois Rivieres, Saskatoon & Gatineau. Served as Chairman of The Veterans PensionAppeal Board for Canada until retirement in 1991.

Major Paeta Derek Hess-von Kruedener, PPCLI

Killed in 2006 with three other unarmed UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon, as a result of two weeks of intense Israeli bombardment of their observation post.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan described the attack as “deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces.”

Gone, but not forgotten.

LCOL MACDONELL CD, Alexander Leslie Duff November 12, 1924 - April 14, 2022 Blue Skies and Tailwinds Duff was born In Victoria but raised a ranch kid in the Okanagan, riding the range and his horse to school until he and his Mum returned in 1939 after his Dad went overseas. Duff Joined The Canadian Scottish Regiment (Militia) as a boy Soldier and transferred to The Canadian Army Active Force in 1943, serving both the Royal Canadian Artillery and Infantry Corps. gaining his commission in 1945. At the end of WWII he obtained his B.A.Sc. in mechanical engineering from UBC then resumed his service career with the Corps. of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers where he held appointments in Canada, Korea, with the British Army, in England and NorthWest Europe. He obtained a Masters degree in Logistics management from USAF Institute of Technology, then appointed Deputy Base Commander/ Tech Service Officer at CFB London becoming Base Commander 1971 responsible for all Regular Forces operations in South-Western Ontario.

After retiring from CAF 1974, he became Director, Dept. of Supply and services, Ottawa. He returned home and to UBC to become Director Emeritus, Faculty of Applied Science/Continuing Engineering Education, where for the last year he flew his plane to work every day from Victoria. His dad Les, an RFC pilot in WWI taught young Duff to fly with a compass and joystick. Duff retired in 1989, but continued to fly well into his 80's. Regaling Korea, Duff, in the wee hours, would take his jeep behind enemy lines and perform recce on abandoned ordnance, once hauling an American bus back to his chop shop transforming it into fully functioning, 6 stall shower units, making sure the Officers had to wait their turn, in the back of the line.

Emigh Remembering Roy Emigh and Mike Emigh, brothers who went from Whitewood, Saskatchewan and fought at Passchendaele. They survived - wounded and haunted. They spoke rarely of that terrible November. Instead, they lived on, and graced our family and their country with exceptional kindness, generosity and wit, until they died. Roy in 1957, and Mike in 1964. They remain always, a quiet victory, far above the cruel stupidity of war.

WHY I WENT TO WAR When I was age two, prior to his death, my Dad wrote me a letter. He explained: “I went to war Brian, so that you would hopefully never have to.” Dad also suggested my responsibilities in life, if he did not return; words that have guided me for 81 years.
