e are asked at times, why the popular CARE Awards event is open only to VRBA members and not to all in the residential construction industry.

Three important reasons are:

he CARE Awards event is an opportunity to celebrate housing achievements in our community.

While there are still many challenges, it is important to recognize the significant progress over the years.

The CARE Awards recognizes these achievements by VRBA’s builders, designers, trades and suppliers and enables them to share projects, experiences and congratulations.

I appreciate the opportunity to manage this valuable tradition.

1. Diligence on VRBA Applicants – VRBA reviews contractors’ references, followed by a Board member conducting interviews and site visits to verify knowledge and experience.

2. Maintain Standards – All VRBA members must agree to our Code of Ethics.

3. Consumer Protection – We avoid confusion where consumers might mistake a non-member for a VRBA member qualified by the above diligence and standards.

We do our best to ensure CARE Awards winners meet the standards expected by the public and our association.

For example, awards judges don’t have an opportunity to inspect a project’s framing or window flashings. We must be confident CARE Awards entrants meet a professional standard beyond the visible finished product.

Opening the CARE Awards to nonmembers would undermine diligence, standards and consumer protection.

A word of advice – before hiring an “award-winning” builder, ask about the standards supporting the awards program.

Renovation Rebate Needed for Seismic Safety, Asbestos

T

here are hundreds of tremors and small earthquakes annually in our region that usually go unnoticed.

They are constant reminders we live in a subduction zone where large earthquakes can happen any time.

Experts say in the next 50 years, there is a 30% chance of a damaging earthquake, and a 10% to 15% chance of a massive earthquake.

Thousands of older homes in our community require anchor bolts, tie-downs and other measures for protection against an inevitable, major earthquake.

A renovation rebate/tax credit could also help cover the costs of asbestos abatement, a toxic product approved years ago by the government and now costing homeowners thousands of dollars to remove.

The federal govt helped install asbestos in homes through their Canadian Home Insulation Program (CHIP) offering grants for insulation such as Zonolite.

Asbestos can be also found in stucco, drywall, roof shingles, window putty, vinyl floor tiles, wiring, cement, and more.

Consumers and contractors relied on federal and provincial governments to ensure these products were safe, which was not the case.

A renovation rebate/tax credit is an ethical obligation by government as well as a responsible investment in public health and safety.

This would also create tax revenue by requiring receipts, helping to battle the underground economy while creating skilled jobs in every community.

Saskatchewan has a renovation tax credit where homeowners may save up to $2,100 in provincial income tax by claiming a 10.5% tax credit on up to $20,000 of eligible home renovation expenses.

BC should follow suit especially considering our exposure to potentially catastrophic seismic events.
