Planting day Dozens of volunteers braved the dismal weather on Saturday to plant more trees at Mangemangeroa Reserve.

The community planting day – hosted by Friends of Mangemangeroa and joint Rotary Clubs – had around 2000 plants to dig-in including cab-

bage trees and flax.

The wet weather didn’t deter around 50-60 people including a senior school group. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown

and Christopher Luxon, National’s candidate to stand for the Botany seat in September’s General Election, were also there.

Hundreds and hundreds of plants went in at Mangemangeroa Reserve on Saturday. The weather breaks here to allow a glimpse of the Hauraki Gulf.

Tornado tears way through East Tamaki

A

tornado struck businesses in Allens Rd East Tamaki around 9am on Saturday causing substantial damage to Elite Bathroomware and neighbouring Fyfe Kitchens.

Caused by unusually warm and humid air mixing with cold, the tornado ripped out the whole front of the Elite building leaving an exposed shell.

The Times was sent a video of the impending destruction of the tornado by Josh, an apprentice at Autoworks Service & Tyre

on Kerwyn Ave. This can be viewed on the Times Youtube channel.

In nearby Otara, a woman gave birth in an ambulance that was hit by flying debris from a shed, and was transferred in another ambulance in a moderate condition in Middlemore.

Mother and baby are safe and well.

hen most principals of local schools were facilitating remote learning during Covid-19 lockdown, Steve Hargreaves, principal of Macleans College was dealing with far bigger issues.

Hargreaves was appointed president of the Auckland Secondary Schools Principals’ Association (ASSPA), during the six weeks of lockdown.

As the newly-anointed president, he represents 107 secondary school principals in Auckland, a leadership role that involves advocacy and fostering a supportive network for members; negotiating with government agencies and being the spokesperson for media outlets.

Known to make some hard decisions, whether it’s cancelling Year 13 graduation ball after he discovered that around 100 students drank alcohol at parties; or bringing more heart to the college by changing the focus of the school beyond high achievers, in the two-and-a-half years that he has been principal at Macleans, he has amply proved his worth.

Right now, Hargreaves is negotiating with the region’s

economic development agency ATEED as well as the Ministry of Education and a software firm to allow the new intake of international students across the border and welcome them during the summer holidays in December.

The education sector has lost hundreds of millions of dollars and local colleges are feeling the impact with international students contributing more than $5 billion to the economy.

Hargreaves says he is in the process of talking to senior international students on staying back in December.

“We may have to make living arrangements for students who are already here and were supposed to return home,” he says. Unsure whether the students who return home will be allowed to re-enter New Zealand during these uncertain times, he says they may have to make a choice of not seeing their parents for a while.

Another spanner in the works with the global pandemic closing borders has been the cancellation of school art tours to Europe.

Twenty-eight of 107 high schools had overseas tours booked with various tour companies that were cancelled due to the pandemic. It resulted in parents losing a lot of money

with pre-booked tours.

Macleans College had 35 students scheduled for an art tour to Paris and England. Families that had shelled out a partpayment of $3000 were agitated when they heard their money was held up.

The tour company promised a refund 15 per cent.

“While the tour company is working to get the money back, we as a school thought it was only right to repay the 15 per cent amount to parents and underwrite it till the tour company refunds the money to the school.”

Hargreaves also says that most of the changes that were proposed with Tomorrow’s Schools will come through soon. It includes the big NCEA review, the changing nature of the curriculum and huge reforms in governance and administration of schools.

He admits being the principal of a school has given him sleepless nights. There have been times when he has had to be firm about making the right decisions even if it made him unpopular.

“When you are a principal of a school, it’s like putting your head on a chopping board.

But it’s important to have the satisfaction of doing the right thing.”

Stockade Hill could soon be protected by legislation if a new push by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross is successful.

Ross has prepared an amendment to the Urban Development Bill going through Parliament that would see Stockade Hill and land within a one kilometre radius designated as “protected land” and not subject to intensive development.

“Stockade Hill is such a special place to Howick,” he said.

“Our community’s long-running battle to ensure Stockade Hill is protected is all about making sure future generations can enjoy this wonderful asset.

“The Urban Development Bill going through Parliament is a threat to places like Stockade Hill. It effectively gives power to Kāinga Ora (formerly Housing NZ) and government ministers to override existing planning rules.

“Under this new law, Kāinga Ora can effectively designate an area as a Specified Development Project, purchase land for the project, change the planning rules, and then go ahead and develop that land.

“The normal appeal rights under the Resource Management Act are being set aside, meaning there would be very limited ability to stop any moves like this.”

The Urban Development Bill passed its second reading in Parliament on June 24 with Ross, National and ACT voting against the Bill proceeding.

Ross has now lodged a proposed amendment to be considered the next time the Bill is debated in Parliament to exclude Stockade Hill and a zone within a one-kilometre radius of Stockade Hill’s summit from the exercise of any power in the Bill, thereby absolutely protecting the excluded land from acquisition and development under the Bill.

“This amendment is especially important because Housing NZ was one of the strongest opponents to any form of protection around Stockade Hill.

“Tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs were spent by Housing NZ fighting the Council and ratepayer associations to enable development around Stockade Hill.

“They may have changed their name to Kāinga Ora, but the same organisation is on record wanting to see planning rules relaxed to enable intensive development in Howick.”

Minister for Urban Development Phil Twyford described the Urban Development Bill as giving Kāinga Ora access to a tool kit of development powers and access to land acquisition powers when undertaking any kind of urban development project.

“The tools will enable Kāinga Ora to develop multiple aspects of the urban environment with greater certainty, integration, and speed,” Mr Tywford said.

“The tool kit of development powers that come with a specified development project include streamlined RMA planning and consenting processes, powers to build and change network infrastructure such as roads … and public transport, and the ability to create or reconfigure parks and reserves.”

Ross says these powers go too far and local MPs need to fight to protect important heritage land and public assets.

“The Urban Development Bill is so broad that almost any land could be subject to Kāinga Ora swooping in,” he said.

“The Government has only proposed limited exemptions for places like conservation land and Maori customary land. This isn’t good enough and we need to see greater protections put in place. It would be extremely sad if many years of hard work by locals in Howick was all undone because we let Kāinga Ora’s push for fast-track housing take over.

“I am calling on other MPs to step up and vote for protecting Stockade Hill and surrounding land.”

The Urban Development Bill is expected to pass its final stages in Parliament before the September 19 election.

The congestion we are seeing on Botany Road around the Covid-19 testing station isn’t good enough and needs to be sorted out.

That’s pretty much the message I gave to the Health Minister and Counties Manukau DHB Chief Executive last week after we saw traffic backed up through to Highland Park and Union Road.

It’s unfortunate that a combination of the Government bungling managed isolation facilities, along with electionrelated opposition scare-mongering, saw such high demand for testing that local testing stations couldn’t cope.

But the demand is there, along with traffic chaos on our local streets.

Access to East Care’s emergency services and the Botany Road birthing centre, is now at risk. Or more to the point - the health of pregnant women and people needing urgent medical treatment is now at risk because Covid-19 testing takes place on one of Botany’s busiest roads where they have to shut down an entire lane of traffic.

I raised the matter on the

much loved Rotarian Paul Cressey who was actively involved with health care governance has passed away following a tragic accident at a restaurant.

He died on June 24.

Known for his philanthropic work, Cressey was an inspirational leader who was passionate about education, people’s wellbeing and community work.

He made it his life’s mission to make a difference on so many counts.

The Half Moon Bay resident was chairman of the South East Auckland Life Education Trust for 16 years, chairman of Menzshed, chair of Medication Safety Programme Steering Group, board member of Counties Manukau District Health Board for 12 years, board member Royal New Zealand Plunket Society and treasurer of Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay. He told me the three Auckland DHBs were urgently reviewing their testing capacity across the city and the number and locations of testing sites. The next day we saw action with extra testing centres announced as being set up across Auckland.

That’s a move in the right direction, but a more important move is to relocate the Botany Road testing site entirely.

Lloyd Elsmore Park is very close by and a relatively central location for east Auckland.

The park also has its own roading network that wouldn’t interfere with everyone else trying to go about daily life.

Cressey - health champion dies A

It marked the beginning of Cressey’s long-standing relationship of 40 years with the Child Cancer Foundation (CCF) and Ronald McDonald House.

He helped CCF set up divisions throughout New Zealand including Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The local hero, turned a personal tragedy around by helping other families with seriously ill children through his work with CCF and the Ronald McDonald House.

In an article published in the Times (June 2007) on the occasion of him receiving a Queen’s Birthday Honour, he said: “I decided there was more to life. This wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t had a little boy

with cancer. It confirmed a real meaning for Carl’s life with us.”

Prior to Carl’s death, the family travelled to Australia for treatment and were the second family to stay in Australia’s first Ronald McDonald House.

“When we got there it was quite amazing.

We met some wonderful people and had some wonderful support. It was just unbelievable. It made me feel as if other people cared.

“I wanted to make sure [other families] never felt alone,” he said.

“We always said we wanted to create awareness of children with cancer. I guess we’ve done that.

“They made a bit of a fuss on the board. The experience has been magic and very fulfilling. It’s recognition of the progress we’ve made. That’s what the award really means to me.

“I accept it on behalf of many hard working individuals. I see this as recognition of them as well. You

COVID-19 Community Update The good news is that there is no evidence of community spread of COVID-19 in Auckland (or anywhere else in New Zealand).

We set a launch date and we were ready. Then lockdown came along and changed everything.

Opening in the second week of level 3 many thought it was a crazy move. As we moved our cabinet to the front of the shop, we were nervous to see what would happen. But we were absolutely blown away.

The support from the locals from then right up until now has been nothing short of amazing.

We have felt the love that is for sure. Seeing our customers we have made cakes for for years and also meeting new customers.

We have added so many yummy selections into our cabinet since we have opened.

We offer a huge range daily from cupcakes to our famous doughnuts, right down to savoury and our new lunch options. We also have a cabinet full of vegan, raw and keto treats which is so popular.

Our vision for Khaos was to create a place where people could come and enjoy a great coffee and something to eat – regardless of their dietary needs.

Offering these options has been fantastic, and we are so thrilled to

It has been wonderful meeting the new customers that have come through after seeing an article about our recent marketing win.

When were you last at the Polish Heritage Trust Museum (PHTM)?

It is near the intersection of Elliot and Moore Streets. The white and red Polish Flag will be flying to welcome visitors.

The museum consists of two levels, the Upper and Lower Galleries.

The Lower Gallery also contains the PHT Library and has facilities to screen movies and documentaries (up to 35 visitors) and houses part of the museum collection, but the main collection is in the Upper Gallery. haos began as a home based cakery where I operated out of my home studio making cakes and sweet treats for the past few years.

Owning our very own cakery was always a dream and when we took the leap to do it – it was the best decision we ever made.

We chose the name Khaos for a few reasons. We have a large family (5 kids ) and combined with the over the top crazy cake designs Khaos seemed to fit perfectly.

This is our life. We found an old tyre shop located on Rodney street that was in desperate need of a makeover. We knew it was going to be a huge job, but we also knew this could be everything we wanted it to be. Something that was inviting, a destination and some different for Howick.

Twelve months of working every weekend and most evenings while I kept making cakes and my husband Peter worked a full time job, Khaos was finally finished.

I

n 1990, Charles Howick, Second Baron of Glendale travelled to New Zealand collecting seeds for his Howick Arboretum on his estate at Howick Hall, Northumberland, England.

After visiting the Howick Historical Village, he was shown around Howick and, with the approval of the Parks Department of Manukau City Council, he planted a pohutukawa at the eastern end of Cockle Bay beach. The pohutukawa is very healthy today.

His forebear, the Third Earl Grey as Minister for the Colonies in the British Parliament, was responsible for sending the Fencibles, soldier-settlers with their families to Howick, Panmure, Onehunga and Otahuhu.

His deputy was the Hon. Fox Maule, who became Lord Panmure in 1852 when his father died. Earl Grey did not approve of slavery.

The Second Earl Grey (Charles) is particularly well known as Prime Minister of Britain (1830-1834) and for the Earl Grey tea named after him which has become very suc-

cessful. He had 15 children from his wife and all 15 children survived. The eldest became the Third Earl Grey.

Charles Howick is a wellknown arboriculturist and plant collector. He created the Howick Arboretum at his home in Howick Hall which has one of the largest collections of wild plants in Britain. He also has a collection of New Zealand native plants.

Former Howick mayor Morrin Cooper has been in touch with Lord Howick recently regarding Howick’s 175th anniversary which is looming.

Many winter vegetables are rich in vitamin C to help support our immune system through the cold and flu season. Kale is extremely nutritious at any time of year. Add some to your winter soup or add some leaves to your roast vegetable salad. It contains calcium, manganese, important B vitamins and is a source of dietary fibre.

The Government says it is committing to a long-term programme of reform to build a stronger New Zealand Health and Disability System that delivers for all.

The Health Minister on June 16 released the final report of the Health and Disability System Review, which makes a series of farreaching recommendations.

“The Review makes it clear we have a very good health and disability system - as has been shown by the outstanding performance of our health services in response to Covid-19,” Health Minister Dr David Clark says.

“But it also confirms that our health services and workforce are under considerable stress and our system is complex and fragmented.

“One of the key lessons of Covid -19 was the importance of a strong public health service. That is what this Review has been all about.

“It sets out a path towards a better, more sustainable health system with clear lines of accountability. One that is more responsive to the needs of local communities and

NEW ROLES TO HELP HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS New frontline support for high quality teaching that promotes the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people was announced by Associate Minister of Education Tracey Martin this month.

“We are funding up to 40 Curriculum Leads who will work directly with schools, kura, early learning services and kōhanga reo to support the teaching of mental health and healthy relationships and promote the wellbeing of learners,” Martin said.

“For too long, as identified in the last two ERO reports, a number of schools have struggled in this area of teaching. The Curriculum Leads, a new type of role based in regional Ministry of Education offices, will provide the specialist support that primary and secondary schools have been wanting and need in this area.”

The new roles are funded from a $32.8 million programme that will be delivered over four years and are the first part of a comprehensive wellbeing support package for the entire education sector. The programme funding also provides for resources for parents and whānau that will support their understanding of the importance of teaching and learning about mental health and healthy relationships. This will enable families to provide support to their children at home.

“It’s predicted that Covid-19 will have long-lasting impacts on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people,” Martin said.

“These Curriculum Leads will provide frontline support that will be tailored to local needs. This will strengthen the sector’s ability to promote and support the wellbeing of all learners in the medium and long term.”

CHILDHOOD ASTHMA One in seven children in NZ have asthma. Just under fifteen percent of children! Of these children three quarters have intermittent wheezing which means the child may wheeze for a few days but have no wheeze for at least 6 to 8 weeks between attacks. Five to ten percent of children have a more persistent wheeze and this group of asthmatic children need to be on an asthma preventor medication (these children have symptoms most days).

All patients with asthma ideally need to work out what their triggers to having asthma are.

Common ones include exposure to cigarette smoke, being allergic to dust mites, cats, pollens, grass, upper respiratory tract infections, exposure to cold air or mould, exercise or childhood stress.

Having a symptom diary is often a useful way of working out what one’s triggers are. Avoiding the triggers can help.

In winter we see a surge in presentation of children with asthma. Knowing what symptom signs to look for if the asthma is getting worse is vital for the family. An asthma action plan is a good way to guide care in the individual.

The flu vaccine is available and recommended for patients with asthma especially if the child or adult is on a preventor medication for their asthma. Discussion with your GP first would be advisable.

NZ has one of the world’s smallest gender gaps Men in New Zealand lead women by eight points in the global health rankings but both sexes among the world’s unhealthiest According to WHO, men are living healthier and longer lives than ever before but are still more likely to be burdened by illness and are outlived by women in every country.

Scientists are even reporting a coronavirus risk gap. Despite the infection rate being relatively equal between the sexes, the death rate for men is estimated to be 2.8 per cent, compared with 1.7 per cent for women.

With this in mind, Manual, the wellbeing platform for men, has analysed health data for 156 countries worldwide across 10 categories including life expectancy, rates of diseases such as diabetes, cancer and obesity, mental health disorders and daily alcohol intake - to find out where has the largest gender health gaps. Out of the 156 countries studied, men face greater health risks in 58 per cent.

Only two nations globally have gender health equality (South Africa and Guatemala), while women face greater health risks

But it isn’t all good news for New Zealanders. Despite boasting a small gender health gap, both sexes feature in the list of the least healthy citizens worldwide.

Men from New Zealand find themselves eight places (145/156) in front of their female counterparts (153/156) in the global health rankings, creating an 8-point gender health gap.

However, men and women from New Zealand are both among the countries with the highest risk of developing cancer in the world, with both ranking in second-

to-last place for this category (155/156).

They also have some of the highest rates of mental health disorders with men ranking 155/156 and women finishing last (156/156) when compared to the rest of the world. This is surprising given the latest wellbeing statistics for the country suggest over 80 per cent of New Zealanders rate their overall life satisfaction as 7 or above out of 10. In comparison, the world’s largest men’s health gap is in Georgia (-84). Women in Georgia have higher positive scores across all health and wellbeing factors.

As a result, Georgian men find themselves 84 places (108/156) behind their female counterparts (24/156) in the global health rankings.

Globally, the Netherlands has the largest women’s health gap (-62) with higher rates of cancer, mental health disorders and tobacco use than men. Many

Feedback SORT OUT OUR BUS STOPS Further to the articles about bus shelters, it was not long after the introduction of the new bus routes that I emailed Auckland Transport and asked why bus shelters were still on road sides alongside a sign saying “This bus stop is no longer in use”.

I got an immediate reply saying we will get back to you shortly. Needless to say, nothing has happened!

There must be several around Howick as I have noticed two of these shelters opposite Pigeon Mountain and one also by the cricket grounds at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Pakuranga Road. I am sure we have all seen commuters waiting where there is no shelter - such as outside The Good Home. Millhouse Drive is another place.

In the 29 years since the 1991 Australian Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Report the causes of custodial deaths were: 58 per cent - Natural causes, including heart disease, cancer, etc.; 32 per cent - self-inflicted, hanging, etc; 10 per cent - including drugs and/or alcohol, violence between prisoners, accidental including motor vehicle and other pursuits etc.

The custodial death rates of indigenous people in Australia were no higher compared to non-indigenous people. The real challenge for Australia is to work towards ensuring that indigenous people are not overrepresented in the criminal justice system.

AFTER COVID-19….

Some people have come through the Covid-19 crisis relatively unscathed and may have even enjoyed the lockdown.

But for thousands, the future looks traumatic, with job losses and struggles to pay the rent or mortgage.

Just as we are all involved in the crisis, so it calls us to respond together in community solidarity.

Our communities are full of gifted people who can inspire each other to build the future together.

I am therefore calling on businesses, community organisations, families and individuals to come together and share their resources. Individually, we may feel that we don’t have much mush to offer.

Maybe you have thrown your whole heart into building a business, which faces destruction and you are shattered to the heart of your being. But together, we can support each other.

BRING KIWIS HOME GRADUALLY I was thoroughly disgusted hearing about the spike in new Covid cases starting with the two sisters’ freedom on sympathetic/compassionate grounds.

And as a follow up (as at Monday, June 22), five more cases have been positively identified and confirmed. There has been a grave error of judgment and possibly negligence. We heard the Prime Minister saying that all and any New Zealand citizens from any part of the world have to come back.

Of course she is right but can she not bring in the people in a gradual and a systematic manner? We know our capacity to isolate, say for example 2000 people at a given time, then it is but logical that we bring in only 2000 people in a fortnight so that all the 2000 can be tested and put into isolation centres for 15 days which must be compulsory for each and every one.

Then and only then can we bring in another 2000.

I am sure this will, in a matter of three to four fortnights, we would have got all the stranded Kiwis home! This will be absolutely manageable and minimise the risk of Covid striking.

RAW SEWAGE SPILL AFTER DELUGE Despite constant calls from residents to Watercare over the five years we’ve lived here, every time it rains heavily, the sewer manhole outside 10 Steeple Rise gushes raw sewage onto the street.

Photos this morning (Thursday, June 25) clearly show not only masses of toilet paper and a condom, but a large, fresh human stool.

It is disgusting, it is a health hazard, it is evidence of the ineptitude of City(care) services to safely and adequately service the community.

Watercare have been seen observing the manhole at times.

They’ve even painted it red ... but they don’t clean up the street and they don’t fix it.

Watercare responds: “Yesterday’s (Thursday, June 25) overflow occurred after very heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Our contractors from CityCare carried out a thorough clean-up and disinfection yesterday afternoon when the overflow stopped.

Wet-weather overflows occur when the volume of stormwater entering the wastewater network exceeds the network’s capacity.

We will be investigating the local network in this area in the next few months to determine whether there is a capacity issue that may require the replacement of pipes.”

SEA SCOUTS PROBLEMS DRAIN AWAY Howick Sea Scouts contacted Hynds Manukau branch to explain they had a serious surface drainage problem that was seeping in to the Sea Scouts Building risking wood rot, black mould and of course

impacting the health and wellbeing of the young sea scouts.

Hynds were happy to help out but lockdown locked in and so did winter.

As soon as the country moved to level 1 - Hynds Manukau branch were able to deliver all the product required to do the drainage work.

This last weekend the Sea Scouts Parent volunteers got to work, and now the rest of the winter they can be confident that all water will stay where it belongs – below ground and out to Stormwater outlets.

he resurgent Blues held on against a spirited Highlanders effort to take a slim 27-24 win at a moist Eden Park on Saturday night.

Given the Blues leadin form, a bigger massacre than Culloden was expected by most of the 27,000 fans against the southern outfit, but the plucky Highlanders stayed in the contest before the Blues edged away as a nailbiter threatened to eventuate.

The conditions dictated that the divisive box kick be employed more than the crowd would have wanted, but both sides exhibited good ball-handling, to allow for an entertaining tussle.

For the Blues, Otere Black’s control brought a balanced, holistic approach from a backline brimming with All Blacks of the future. Caleb Clarke looked like a chip off the old block as he broke tackles at will and was rewarded with a

well-taken try to which he offered thanks to the memory of his grandfather who had passed away before the match.

Number 8 Hoskins Sotutu enhanced his reputation as a star-in-the-making with another workmanlike performance, interspersed with attacking punch around the fringes.

Superstar acquisition Beauden Barrett had a B-plus game. He had a kick charged down, but showed his class to remedy the situation with a pick-up showcasing skills unparalleled.

After taking a handy 22-10 lead into the break, the Blues did their best to blow the game as the Highlanders rallied and took their opportunities. The injection into the game of flame-haired firebrand halfback Fin Christie (who is pressing his claims to start ahead of Northland’s Sam Nock) got the Blues moving again and they hung on like a cat falling from a tree.

The win, although not

perfect, was an important one with the Blues heading into a bye week. It gives the squad the chance to ice a few niggles ahead of a trip to the ‘village of the damned’ to play the Crusaders in a fortnight.

Motor racing identity dies A

Howick businessman and motorsport exponent has died.

Clark Proctor, 62, from Cockle Bay, passed away on Friday June 26 at Middlemore Hospital, surrounded by family and close friends, according to a death notice in the media.

“Dearly loved husband of Jackie.

Loved and cherished Dad of Georgia and Jack. Loved son of Wyn, and the late Bert, brother of Sue and Julie,” the notice said.

“Unexpectedly and taken too soon.”

Website talkmotorsport.co.nz paid tribute to Proctor. “Vale Clark Proctor. We mark the passing of a great motorsport competitor, Clark Proctor, who passed away on Friday. He is survived by his partner Jackie and their two children Georgia and Jack.”

Proctor’s business website says he has more than 45 years’ experience in the scrap/recycling trade. He established Metalman in 1997 and grew the business into a national chain over the next 18 years. He sold the company in August 2015 and established shipping container solutions company Logical Group as a new challenge.

Proctor was bitten by the motorsport bug from an early age.

“After 45 years of establishing and running the family-owned national recycling chain, Metalman, Jackie and I sold the company in 2015 to pursue a quieter lifestyle,” he said on the website.

“During our journey we quickly understood the importance of customer service. Taking our past experiences, we have found ways to offer exceptional services in many other areas. Hence a multidivisional group of companies was

Motorsport Park Hampton Downs in north Waikato featured Proctor in a news feature on its website in 2016.

“Clark Proctor is living the dream,” the piece reads.

“The Howick entrepreneur sold his scrap metal business Metalman last year freeing up more time for his other passion, motorsport. Proctor has had a long career in stockcar racing, rallying and Formula 5000

but this month he’s making his debut in the Australian GT Championship at the Hampton Downs 101 from October 29-30.

“It’s the first major event at the new-look Hampton Downs after a $30m investment by new owner Tony Quinn and Proctor can’t wait to try out the 1.2km track extension.

“Hampton Downs has always been a really good race track but I reckon the extension will make it

even better. It’s 4kms long now and there are plenty of passing opportunities so the racing will be fierce.

It should also be a great place to watch racing because you can see pretty much the whole track wherever you are.”

Proctor was racing a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.

“We’re up against guys who’ve been racing GTs for many years so we’ll be absolutely stoked if we could get in the top 20,” says Proctor.

“Really we just want to finish without smashing the car up. We haven’t even driven the thing yet!”

The article says Proctor was bitten by the motorsport bug from an early age. “He was 12 or 13 when his father, who was also a scrap merchant, acquired the Miramar Gas Works in Wellington,” the articles says.
