The Hulse family were based in Howick for four decades and during that time Ron proudly served as president of the Howick Returned and Services Association after joining its ranks in 1962. He credited the late Russ Rice as his mentor. He was, until today, I’m pretty sure, the longest-serving living member of Howick RSA and he was awarded life membership in 2015. Dealing with student anxiety as schools reopen post Covid-19 By FARIDA MASTER
M
urray Burton, Principal of Elim Christian College, says they’ve had all the protocols in place at all three campuses as school reopened yesterday after seven weeks of lockdown. A staggered start and finish, with no public gatherings, staff meetings or school assemblies is the new norm. “All staff meeting will be done via technology. Visitors and parents will not be allowed in the campus,” says Burton. “Everyone brings in their own sanitisers to school and there is a copious amount in staff rooms and bathrooms as well,” he says. Of the 1250 students that are being slowly integrated into the campuses, Burton says that currently he knows of five staff and 20 students not returning to school – due to varying reasons that include being health compromised. Burton says the challenge is to have stringent measures of hygiene, “without the school looking like a hospital and then there is the emotional side that the school needs
to look at. “There will be a certain amount of anxiety so we have to make students feel the warmth and feel welcomed.” He admits that while home learning has been challenging from some with mum and dad trying to earn a living and finding time to teach their children, other students have thrived with it. And while teachers have to assess the different online learning levels of students, Burton says he plans to put some of the things he learnt from being under house arrest in good use. “I think we can save time with online staff meetings and we’ll continue with that apart from some other things we learnt during lockdown.”
YOLANDE FRANKE: VIDEO ASSEMBLY FOR TRANSITION
Somerville Intermediate worked on a video assembly to help students make a smooth transition to school. A video that covered all the safety measures in place from no water fountains to ordering books remotely from the library and the different entries and exits to the

school as well as no interschool sport for term 2, detailed the new norm at school. “Staff and many parents have said that they have appreciated the clear and reassuring communications,” says principal of Somerville Intermediate Yolande Franke. “Some parents are anxious or concerned about underlying medical conditions (children or members of their household) and exercise caution by not sending their children back to school straight away. “There will be some digital learning available; however, it will be significantly different to the online learning that students experienced during the lockdown. “We’ll work with families in an effort to address concerns and support these students to transition to school,” she says.
ALAN MCINTYRE: SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS OF EXPECTED INCOME LOST
Alan McIntyre of Owairoa Primary says the lockdown has certainly tested their resilience, patience and relationship building.
“It was important that we stood tall in the face of the unknown, showed leadership and managed the transition to lockdown. Our emphasis was on student and staff wellbeing and trying to have a positive approach to the situation.” While school reopened yesterday, Alan says that new entrants to the school and full staff will be back on Monday May 25. “Some students are anxious about a return to school because of their ongoing exposure to the virus news and the family discussions around health and safety and hygiene. Even the five-year-olds seemed to have a good understanding about the ‘virus’ and health considerations associated with it. “The challenges we will face is dealing with student and parent anxiety, the nervousness of children returning to school after such a long break and ensuring that we maintain a healthy, hygienic environment,” he says. “We have been researching a number of articles on providing a school that acknowledges students fears so as the students return to class the programme will not be the

same as when they left before the lockdown. “On Monday parents were restricted entry onto the school site so we can manage the contact tracing and identification requirements. The playgrounds are open and students are excited to come back and meet their friends Talking about the International Students programme that Owairoa School has successfully run for many years McIntyre says that post Covid-19 things will not be the same. “Sadly the expected income budget will not be realised this year as some students have returned home. Our large July intake will not now happen as the borders are closed and the future is not predictable at this stage. “Several hundred thousand dollars of expected income will not be available to the Board of Trustees this year. “Thankfully we do have a core of Longer Term International Students enrolled currently with several more students from around New Zealand, eager to enrol at Owairoa Primary School, at Alert Level 2.”

It’s show time! Local cinemas back Safety at the election A range of measures will be put in place to help make it safe for voters and election workers to take part in the 2020 General Election and referendums. The Electoral Commission is continuing to work towards delivering the election and two referendums on September 19, which is the date set by the Prime Minister in January. Changes are being made to the way the election will be run to meet the public health requirements for Covid-19. “Safety measures at voting places will be based on advice from the Ministry of Health,” says Alicia Wright, chief electoral officer. “They include queue management and physical distancing, as well as the use of hand sanitiser and protective gear.” Advance voting will start two days earlier than planned on Saturday 5 September to spread voting over a longer period and reduce congestion in voting places. The number of advance voting places will be increased, especially on the weekend before election day. Where possible, larger venues will be used to give voters more space. “Some people will not be able to go to a voting place, but they will still be able to vote,” says Alicia Wright. Voters who are older or have a medical condition that places them at high risk from Covid-19 can choose to vote at a voting place or register for postal voting and have their voting papers sent to them in the mail. “Voting services can also be delivered to small clusters of voters who are in isolation during the voting period using takeaway voting, which is when voting papers are delivered and picked up,” says Wright. She says it is important for people to enrol early and keep their details up to date so that they receive information about the election and referendums in the mail including an EasyVote card which makes voting faster. ➤➤For more information on Covid-19 and the election, go to vote.nz/covid19.

ovie buffs can rejoice as they head to the cinemas in Alert Level 2 to watch new films lined up for the silver screen. Cordelle Edwin, manager Monterey Cinemas, Howick, opened its doors to the public on Saturday May 16 and says that they have a selection of films “to bring our community back to their local cinema”. The cinema has in place physical distancing including check board seating plans. Talking about the new norm she says, “We are staggering session times to allow for movement in our foyer. With longer gaps between films to allow for cleaning in between sessions. “Increased cleaning will take place between sessions of high touch points i.e. doors, handles and hand rails. “Staff will be washing hands frequently as well utilising hand sanitizer and gloves. Staff well being is important to us and there will be distancing between staff of 1m and we are asking all staff to stay home if they are unwell. Cordelle says that contact tracing will be in place for all visitors to the site in the form of a contactless QR code register for those with mobile capable devices and a paper form the staff can fill in. Kelly Rogers, owner Montery Cinema and Ceo at Rialto Distribution says, “It’s so important for culture and entertainment to be reignited for the benefit of our local communities. It’s our hope that Kiwis show solidarity by getting out there to support local businesses and independent cinemas with their friends. It’s been a while and we’re certainly looking forward to it.” Hoyts Cinema, Botany responded to the Times query about their opening date saying, “We are excited to re-open and for the opportunity to wel-
come guests to enjoy the Hoyts experience. “We look forward to new films being released from Hollywood in July and are actively looking at how we might be able to bring forward our reopenings and safely meet the required guidelines. We are advanced in preparations to ensure our guests and team members are in the safest possible environment. We hope to make further announcements soon.”

DEVELOPMENT
Too cosy for comfort – Seven dwellings in place of one! By FARIDA MASTER
C
“We issued a warning letter to the owner instead, reiterating the need to obtain the right resource consent before starting work again.” Adrian Wilson, Team Manager Compliance Investigations
“I am all for progress but this is ridiculous. Both 14 and 16 and 16a Cosy Place are served by a long right of way that can only serve a limited number of residences,” he said. In mid-January a warning letter was sent to the developer. “The plot of land cannot have more than two small houses, so that it can serve the right of way and not cause traffic problems in the cul-de-sac,” said Iqbal. The neighbours submitted a petition to the mayor. Adrian Wilson, Team Manager Compliance Investigations, said, “On January 15 we instructed the owners of 14 Cosy Place that all works needed to stop until they received the appropriate resource consent. “We attended the site again on February 10 and discovered the site was
secure and no work was being undertaken, making it clear the property owner was complying and we did not need to issue an abatement notice. We issued a warning letter to the owner instead, reiterating the need to obtain the right resource consent before starting work again. If the owner fails to comply further action will be taken.” However, at the time of going to press the excavation work at the site has begun again. Residents are still upset that the developer EA Civil has been given the resource consent for amended plans to build seven, two-bedroom units instead of eight. A report from a Traffic Consultant gives detailed answers to the questions put forth by the council. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says he is pleased to see that this development is slightly smaller than what was first proposed. “However there are still significant issues which are unaddressed such as the impact that significant intensification like this will have on things like the lack of off-street car parking and local infrastructure. Auckland Council continues to believe people moving into these new developments will all take the bus and only own one car. “The proposed development at Cosy Place is another example of the problems with the Unitary Plan. Instead of intensification being focused around key transport networks, we are seeing extreme housing intensification is being proposed in suburban communities without any regard for the character of the community, on street car parking, storm water and other infrastructure needs.” The Times is attempting to contact the developer.

osy Place residents in Howick are upset and angry that they are yet another casualty of the Unitary Plan. Residents have been fighting to stop the building of multiple dwellings in the place of one. They have lost the battle. Cosy Place residents, off Union Rd, were first alarmed when they heard there were plans to build eight dwellings at the 14 Cosy Place property that has access through a shared driveway. Neighbours were shocked to hear that the owner had sold the property to a developer and not an individual house owner. In December, the house at 14 Cosy Place was demolished, with major excavation works starting in December and going on in January. Zan Iqbal, a resident of 16 Cosy Place, was even more upset when her 85-yearold father developed a severe rash, skin irritation and breathing problems allegedly due to asbestos content found during the demolition and stirred soil dust from diggings. Strong winds that allegedly blew the toxic stuff over to neighbouring properties made things worse for her elderly parents. “They didn’t take proper safety measures for the disposal of asbestos and left approximately 12 plastic bags of asbestos over the weekend with no warning tape or any formal communication. It was a huge health risk for all of us,” she said. After doing some spadework Zan discovered that resource consent from Auckland Council had not been approved. “The right of way just cannot serve eight more families. Even if they have just two cars per family, there is no question
of finding parking considering people living in the culde-sac are struggling to find parking for their vehicles. “The project of multiple units is totally inappropriate. This probably was the reason that the project of eight units was stalled due to objections raised by the residents to Auckland Council staff and contractors.” Zan’s father, Mohammed Iqbal who has lived in Cosy Place for 50 years said he was glad the Council put a stop to the building activity.

COMMUNITY
Joint effort to support food parcels through Covid-19 By ROB MOUNCEY
T
he Rotary Club of Howick Community Trust and club members have joined forces with the Thomas Brydon Trust to help local organisations provide food parcels to needy families in the Howick area. Throughout the nation the demand for food parcels and assistance has grown substantially under the lockdown provisions of the Covid-19 pandemic and this has also flown through to our own community. Many people are under considerable financial stress and have to resort to food parcels to feed themselves and their families. This will continue even under Alert Level 2 with reduced working hours and redundancies in the coming weeks. Faced with this situation, Howick Rotary decided that it needed to get in behind three local organisations and provide some much-needed funding. The local organisations are the Salvation Army, Stand Children’s Services and All Saints Anglican Church. Each of these organisations is set up to deliver food parcels and other assistance to needy families in the area.

The club decided to donate $5000 from its own Community Trust and gained the assistance of the Thomas Brydon Trust of a further $5000. The Thomas Brydon Trust, whilst independent of the Rotary organisation, has a strong association with it as it was founded by Tom Brydon in 1981 with two fellow Rotarians. Tom was president of Howick Rotary in 1969/70. The current trustees are all Rotarians. In addition to providing support through the trusts Howick Rotary has challenged its members to make individual or family donations on a
matching grant basis. For each dollar donated by club members, the club’s Community Trust will match it with an additional donation. These donations will be made direct to the Salvation Army through the Make a Donation button on its web site or to the club’s Community Trust by internet banking (bank account 03-0166-0435725-00). The club has organised with the Salvation Army to track the donations so the matching can be achieved. It is hoped to raise another $6000 through the challenge. The club also challenges other organisa-
tions and the Howick community to join the challenge. All three organisations are thrilled to receive the support. Joanne Wardle, Pastor of the Salvation Army in Howick is “thrilled with this amazingly generous donation”. “We have not experienced anything like it before and I would like to thank Rotary for the vision and drive they have demonstrated to help the local community,” Wardle said. Rev Scott Malcolm commented, “The All Saints Anglican Church Parish Council would like to thank the Rotary Club of Howick for it’s very generous and thoughtful donation of $2000 to our Foodbank. We can assure Rotary and its members that the funds will be used in the local Howick Pakuranga district and will be for the benefit of the children, women and families of this area.” Pene Frost, Stand’s regional manager, said, “The donation received from the Rotary Club of Howick, has enabled the Stand Children’s Services Team to continue to provide genuine support to children and families in the local area. “Providing food parcels, blankets and warm pyjamas for children and their families during these challenging times, is a very real way of show-
ing compassion, care and service to those families affected by the constraints and demands created by Covid-19. “The deprivation we are experiencing in some families is unimaginable to many of us. Thank you, Rotary, you are making a very real contribution to creating a difference in the lives of these families.” Mike Abercrombie, President of Howick Rotary said, “The club has provided significant support in the area over across a vast number of projects over its almost 60 years and we are very proud to once again assist those families in need in the Howick community in what is one of the most challenging periods of our history.” Allan Riley, chairman of the Thomas Brydon Trust said, “Covid-19 has highlighted the financial distress existing amongst our new refugees – Kiwis. They may be our workmates, friends or neighbours. “The Thomas Brydon Trust is pleased to support them alongside Howick Rotarians and the local Salvation Army teams.” ➤➤If you are interested in knowing more about what Rotary does in the community call Ian Fox 021662 896 or visit the web site www.howickrotary.org.nz

MUSIC
Guitar will stick with you through thick and thin M
usicians the world over have been collaborating, creating and sharing music on social media during the lockdown. The media have reported soaring online sales of instruments and recording equipment throughout the world. Music can be a very powerful force in uncertain times. Auckland Guitar School owner Dylan Kay explains: “For our students, the guitar has been a good friend during the lockdown - it’s always there for you when you’re stuck inside and bored, and we’ve had quite a number of great lockdown songs written. “As we return to normal classes, with all the necessary precautions in place, we’re looking forward to welcoming students back to the school – we’ve missed you!” One of the beautiful things about playing the guitar, says Dylan, is developing a lifelong skill that is fun,
rocket science – yes, there are challenges on the way and not everyone is going to be the next Jimi Hendrix, but with the right teaching (as opposed to online or YouTube!), I firmly believe that anyone can develop the skills to play guitar well,” says Dylan. With its friendly, supportive atmosphere, experienced teachers and an unparalleled range of opportunities for students to apply what they’re learning, Auckland Guitar School is able to provide a unique experience for Howick guitarists from its Picton Street teaching studio. ➤➤Visit the school’s website www.aucklandguitarschool. co.nz, or call on 533 5246 to book a free intro session and find out how to transform your guitar playing!
challenging and deeply rewarding. There’s always something new to learn, there are always more skills you can add to your playing and as you get older, it’s a great way to keep your brain active. For kids, the research is very clear – guitarists do better in school. Playing guitar improves maths skills, coordination and multi-level thinking. They also learn “how to learn” – through daily practice, you cultivate good habits and discover that to get the results you want you need to pay attention to detail and remain focused. The whole process helps develop the discipline needed to achieve goals and helps build selfconfidence and the ability to work in a team. In the wake of the lockdown, now is the perfect time to take the first step and discover the power of music and guitar through having proper lessons. “The good news is that it’s not

Extra care plea for Alert Level 2 Howick Hall in Northumberland and the famous tea.

HISTORY
Our name Howick As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017.
I
n 1847, Governor Sir George Grey renamed the village of Owairoa to ‘Howick’ after the third Earl Grey (b.1802-d.1894), ‘Secretary for War and the Colonies’ of the British Parliament who was responsible for sending the Fencible army pensioners to Auckland and Howick. The third Earl Grey’s father, the Second Earl Grey, was Prime Minister in Great Britain from 1830 to 1834. One of his staff in China assisted a Chinese official and was rewarded with a box of special tea. He gave the tea to the 2nd Earl Grey who gave it to his friend Richard Twining who had a tea shop in London to produce this tea.
ANNIVERSARY London Society loved the black Chinese tea with the herb bergamot (a strong citrus aroma and flavour). In 1837 Queen Victoria appointed Twinings as suppliers of tea to her household which included Earl Grey tea and the tradition has continued with Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal appointment. The Grey families live at Howick Hall in Alnwick, Northumberland, England.
Howick is a Scandinavian name meaning “a high dairy farm” that originates from the Viking invasion of Britain in the 9th century. The present Earl Grey, Charles, Second Baron Howick of Glendale, visited the Howick Historical Village in 1990 then planted a pohutukawa tree at the eastern end of Cockle Bay, marked with an historical plaque. The name ‘Howick’ was controversial even in 1847 as it replaced ‘Owairoa’ meaning a ‘long river’ as viewed from Stockade Hill, the centuries-old Maori name for the area. ➤➤Alan La Roche, Howick historian
As people start socialising, driving to work again, and children return to school, Police and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency remind Kiwis we need to take extra care on the roads. “Some of us may not have driven at all for seven weeks, or will have only taken short trips to the supermarket. So we may be feeling a bit rusty behind the wheel or overwhelmed by the amount of cars back on the road again,” saying Acting Superintendent Gini Welch, National Road Policing Manager. “We expect there will be a lot of people out and about, meeting up with family and friends they haven’t been able to see since before alert level 4. “We know people will be keen to get a bit of normalcy back in their lives and head to their favourite cafe, the hairdresser, or visit malls with friends. “We’ll also have children returning to schools on Monday. So it’s important we remember to all take it easy on the roads and to slow down around schools this
“
From day 1 of lockdown, we have been completely confident that management has been making the necessary decisions to protect our welfare and their frequent communications with the residents have been informative and reassuring. Our family members have had great peace-of-mind about our welfare and have been able to concentrate on looking after themselves, which in turn has given us peace-of-mind.

week. For parents, it’s also a good time to remind your children and teens about road safety. Our kids have likely become accustomed to carless roads, so there’s a chance they may be a bit more complacent when they’re crossing roads. That means reminding them of the basics is a good idea. “We still came across people speeding during alert levels 4 and 3, so we want to remind motorists to slow down. Even a small increase in speed results in a much greater increase in your stopping distance, and that
in turn has a huge impact on the outcome of a crash. It may mean the difference between life and death, or walking away versus being carried away with permanent injuries. “How you act on the roads has an impact on everybody else around you. So, let’s remember to stay kind and take care of each other,” says Acting Superintendent Welch. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Senior Manager Road Safety Fabian Marsh says the roads will be much busier with the move to Alert Level 2, and he urged motorists to drive carefully, be alert, keep to the speed limit, and share the road.

OPINION
MEDIA
We’re Where publishing I again Just like that we are at Alert Level 2 and some normality has returned. The sun shone and we all descended on our various shopping centres to do what we haven’t done for Reay Neben seven weeks – shop! We all supported our local businesses and that is now what we have to do. We are so lucky to have so many local and innovative businesses operating in our area. The Times office has now opened for business with social distancing rules in place. Thanks again to so many of you who made contact with us with your appreciation at the return of the printed issue in the letterbox.
HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF YOUR COMMENTS: ■■ “ The best things will stand the test of timethat’s why the Times is still going strong. Miss you all.” – Jo Sykes ■■ “Thank you for the online versions, looking forward to seeing the print return. Love getting local news, we’re so fortunate to have a real local newspaper!” – Damian Light ■■ “Welcome back. You’ve done a great job reporting online through this event.” – Stephen Lyon ■■ “Well done Times – keep up the good work.” – Ruth Cobb ■■ “Congratulations for being back in print your publication has been sorely missed. Best wishes.” – Arthur Moore ■■ “Very happy to see normality return to our lives such as receiving a copy of our favourite newspaper delivered this afternoon.” – Val Lott ■■ “ That’s awesome but we never seem to get one in our letter box. Yes we have got it tonight thank you very much.” – Errol Keegan ■■ “Nice to have our community paper back.” – Yolande Franke ■■ “Look forward to receiving our local paper tonight.” – Sharon Stewart – Reay Neben is the publisher of Times newspapers.
sn’t is good to be reading a paper copy of the Times once again! Long may our trusted local newspaper reign over us. Being locked down for a month gave us all time to reflect on the things we value. Family, friends, community and personal wellbeing. All things that Lucy and I rediscovered while confined to our Dannemora home with our kids. While cars mostly left our local streets, on my daily exercise through Botany, it was great to see families and children out enjoying each other’s company during that difficult
to next?
time. As we now emerge from our two months of protective bubbles, there are many questions about the next two years ahead. The Government delivered a big shot of adrenaline through its annual Budget last week. It was quick and dirty with sums involved beyond our normal comprehension. Like it or not, that’s what governments around the world need to be doing to get us through. Here’s what I would do from here: 1) Ramp up infrastructure spending. Identify legacy projects that provide 3-5 years
worth of stimulus and leave us with tangible assets we can make use of afterwards. Locally that means the Eastern Busway, Botany to the Airport Rapid Transit, East-West Link and Mill Road corridors. 2) Re-align our trade strategy towards traditional trading partners. Nations within the Five Eyes network are known entities and highest on the trust scale. We don’t have free trade agreements with the US and UK because for too long all our eggs have been in the China basket. Now’s the right time to change that.

Jami-Lee Ross 3) Strip back the amount of regulation and red tape we wrap the country up in. Feel good policies are nice to haves in the good times. Reducing the hurdles everyday Kiwis and business owners need to jump through will free us all up to get on with our lives. And goodness, don’t we all just want to get on with our lives once more? Covid-19 changed the way we approach the world, but it also made a closer more resilient nation that will now pull through. ➤➤Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany
Consumer NZ test breaks down 26 toilet papers Consumer NZ’s test of 26 toilet papers finds loo roll that’s kind on your skin isn’t always the kindest to the environment or your plumbing. Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said, with the growing importance of making greener purchasing choices, there was more to picking the best bog roll than just comfort. “We were especially keen to see which loo papers broke down quickest. “We were surprised that the softest product, Kleenex Complete Care (extra thick sheets), took a whopping 11 minutes to disintegrate – 20 times longer than EarthCare 100% Recycled, which took 32 seconds,” Mr Duffy said. “We’ve known for some time the importance of toilet papers to New Zealanders – it’s a product that consumers
regularly tell us they want to be tested. “We want to ensure Kiwis have the best information available to help them make good purchasing decisions in this critical area.” Consumer NZ assessed separation ease, disintegration time, environmental factors and, critically, puncture resistance to produce its toilet paper ratings. “Products containing recycled or sustainably sourced paper or that are manufactured in New Zealand using locally sourced raw materials were awarded higher scores.” Printed, perfumed and bleached products lost points because of the additional environmental impacts of these processes. “We think manufacturers should be minimising unnecessary features in products
where those features consume extra resources.” Consumer NZ also considered softness, but it wasn’t included in its overall rating. “It’s a sensitive area and results vary depending on whether the user is a folder or a scruncher. We didn’t want to give anyone a bum steer,” Mr Duffy said. The good news is there are products that have a lower environmental impact and allow consumers to take the time to treat themselves to a higher level of comfort.
RECOMMENDED AND “DON’T BUY” TOILET PAPERS
Of the 26 products tested, 10 got Consumer NZ’s recommendation. These were: ■■ Earthcare 100% recycled unscented white rolls ■■ Savers Printed toilet tissue
■■ Sorbent Silky White long rolls ■■ Sorbent Thick & Long Silky White (king size) ■■ EarthSmart 360º Recyclable Paper Pack 100% Recycled Paper long rolls ■■ Purex Soft White ■■ Quilton Hypo-allergenic unscented ■■ Sorbent Hypo-allergenic Thick & Large (king size) ■■ Quilton Ecoply (unscented) ■■ Sorbent Hypo-allergenic Pure White long rolls Three products were “Don’t buys”: ■■ Essentials White toilet tissue ■■ Necessities Toilet tissue ■■ Kleenex Complete Clean (extra thick sheets) toilet tissue ➤➤ See the full test results for 26 toilet papers at consumer.org.nz.
GAMING
New game is latest weapon in war against Covid-19 A
new online game developed by New Zealand disaster recovery agencies is the latest weapon in the war against Covid-19. What’s The Plan Stan? is a free online game developed to teach primary school children how to be prepared for emergencies, and has now been expanded with a new pandemic level in response to the current crisis. The game complements the comprehensive What’s The Plan Stan? online teaching resource and has been developed in partnership with Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Earthquake Commission (EQC) to support schools, teachers, parents and students in developing knowledge and skills to prepare for emergency events. The game already included scenarios for earthquakes, floods,
tsunamis, volcanoes and even a zombie attack, but the Aucklandbased developers, Geo AR Games, have been working day and night to prepare the new pandemic level to deliver messages relevant to Covid19. “Getting this game and new pandemic level completed wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of so many people and partners,” says Melanie Langlotz, chief executive officer of Geo AR Games. The game that has been extensively tested is browser-based and can be played on a Chromebook, laptop or PC (with a keyboard), and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. “More importantly, the key messages about being prepared for different emergencies really stuck with the kids.” NEMA and AEM remain in the thick of the Covid-19 response

and AEM Group Controller Kate Crawford said any tool that helps reinforce messaging around how to protect ourselves from the virus remains vitally important. “Steps like washing our hands
and keeping two metres distance will help keep all of us safe. This is as true for our kids as adults and this game helps get those messages across in a fun and memorable way.” Crawford said that the game’s
release marks the culmination of three years’ work. “Because of this earlier work and having the game’s platforms in place, we’ve been able to move at pace to get the new pandemic level completed.” EQC had funded the development of the desktop version of the game, allowing students with less access to mobile devices to take part. “These extraordinary times have required many agencies to adapt from their core work as we all do what we can to help flatten the curve for Covid-19,” says Jo Horrocks, EQC, head of Resilience Strategy and Research. When most children head back to school there is something new for Kiwi kids to look forward to – an augmented reality version of the game. ➤➤www.geoargames.com/whatsthe-plan-stan

Alert Level 2 welcomed
Locals – like Kiwis throughout New Zealand – were so happy with the drop to Alert Level 2 last Thursday. We were eager to get back to some semblance of normalcy. Most popular were our favourite coffee spots, cafes, barbershops and the ocean. Times photographer WAYNE MARTIN captured these images on Day One at Level 2 as east Auckland sprung back to life.

Health destination
Building resilience
In 1873 Charles Blackley noticed that hay fever was a disease of the educated class and, later on, David Strachan introduced the Hygiene Hypothesis; that greater exposure of children to infections builds resilience in their immune system. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Possibly overstating the matter. However, there is a lot of evidence that generalised exposure, particularly environmental exposure going to parks, playing with other children, stomping in puddles etc does build your immune system. We can have “good exposure”. But now we have extra scared and anxious parents. As we exit the lockdown, after all the hyperbole, many parents are intimidated. Some through lack of knowledge and confusion, most through the worldis-going-to-end messages put out there. We have parents shielding
their kids from harm, keeping them inside and fussing if they will ‘ever be safe’. It may not yet be safe for the illmanaged fraternisation of children with other children – the silly things push and shove each other, pull off masks and forget to wash hands. But we need to communicate to parents that children also need environmental exposure in order to be safe. We should now encourage parents to responsibly and knowledgeably take their children out of lockdown, expose children to environmental life, stomp in puddles and smell the roses, and not be afraid. If not, then we could see a whole generation with poorly-developed immune systems and distorted views of health, safety, and society. Dr Mike Schmidt Pakuranga
There have been several calls for the awakening of New Zealand tourism and a mutual bubble with Australia. To date these ideas have been met with cautious discussion and one could wonder why. Certainly, the NZ tourist industry could use the shot in the arm. However, is there an underlying hesitation that is a deeper and a more political malady? Opening up a travel bubble with Australia would be a tacit admission that the health status of NZ and Australia are similar enough to justify mixing populations. The government of NZ may not want to go down this road yet considering that we embraced much more stringent health measures than Australia and our style of lockdown had much more severe effects on our economy. The borders of NZ will only be opened when the NZ government is confident that there is an equitable balance between the health status of NZ and Australia. To do so too sooner would motivate a comparison between the health strategies of the two countries. Regretfully the NZ tourism industry may have to wait until the NZ government feels it has put enough distance between our lockdown measures and the comparative consequences. Dr Mike Schmidt Pakuranga
Cockle gathering unsustainable Saturday May 9, 2.30pm at Cockle Bay. I counted at least 55 people gathering cockles and took a photograph. Each person allowed 50 = 2750 cockles. With people coming and going over a whole day, the total of cockles taken would be very, very much higher! In my opinion this is not sustainable. Terry Stretton Cockle Bay
Payment to non-NZ citizens Winston Peters has floated the idea that non-employed foreign workers should go to their home countries as New Zealand cannot afford to support them.
For once I agree with him, but it does not go far enough. We should also not be giving NZ super and other benefits to non-NZ citizens who have not contributed to NZ in the way of working here and paying taxes. Many of the people who came here under the family reunification scheme are just using NZ as a retirement home. (National Party leader) Simon Bridges has said the age for qualifying for NZ super should go up because we can’t afford it. I say we should not pay non-contributing citizens of other countries. It took me 50 years of paying taxes before I got NZ super. Non-NZ residents can get it in just 10 years Arthur Moore Pakuranga

BUDGET 2020
Jobs budget to get economy moving again ➤➤$50 billion Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund to invest in the economy and jobs ➤➤Economy forecast to grow in 2021 ➤➤Return to 4.2 percent unemployment by 2022 ➤➤Budget focus on jobs, infrastructure, training and environment
I
nvestments to both save and create jobs in Budget 2020 mean unemployment can be back to pre Covid-19 levels within two years and could see the economy growing again as early as next year, the Government said yesterday. The centrepiece of Budget 2020, Rebuilding Together, is the establishment of a $50 billion Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund which will target stimulus investment at protecting existing jobs, creating new ones and provide support for workers to retrain and for business to survive as well as targeting support to those sectors most affected by the virus. “The Government’s decision to go hard and early to defeat the virus means we are now in a strong position to quickly get our economy moving again,” Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern said. “We will bring the same determination and focus to jobs and the economic rebuild as we brought to our health response. “No country will be immune to the global downturn the virus has caused, but we are hopeful our sharp and short lockdown means we are now in a stronger position to rebuild. The Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund will deliver major investments in jobs such as making certain trades training and apprenticeships free, the delivery of 8000 new public houses and extending the food in schools programme to up to 200,000 children creating jobs up and down the country.
“Treasury budget forecasts suggest our package of jobs stimulus measures could see as many as 138,000 jobs saved in the current economic quarter alone and employment rise by 234,000 jobs over the next two years,” the PM said. “As a country we saved for a rainy day for exactly this reason. We can now use the strength of the Government’s economic position to carry the load in the short term while businesses and households get back on their feet. “We united as a team of five million to stop the virus and we will now work together to collectively save jobs.” Deputy Prime Minister Winston
Peters said, “New Zealanders have made incredible sacrifices and suffered incredible loss in our collective battle against Covid-19. It is vital that Budget 2020 builds on restoring independence in every sense, to every day New Zealanders by creating jobs for those who have had them stripped away by this viral invasion.” This means record investment in infrastructure, health care, education, and the regions, he said. The coalition government is using every tool it has to meet the immediate needs of New Zealanders post-lockdown, while balancing the long-term goal of a vibrant future economy, said Peters. By thinking outside the bubble we will supercharge our economy in ways we have never seen before and prove that in times of crisis, as we have time and time again, that New Zealand can be relied on to lead. “This Budget will support the people most affected by the global downturn,” Green Party Co-leader James Shaw said. “It will help keep people in work, create new jobs and provide potentially life-changing learning and training opportunities for thou-
sands – all whilst restoring our precious natural environment and providing affordable places for people to live. “One of the best ways to create good quality, well-paid jobs quickly is by investing in nature. The $1.1 billion we are providing for naturebased jobs as part the COVID-19 Response and Recovery will not only help restore our natural landscapes, native bush, waterways and coast, it will give thousands of people access to well-paid work so they can continue to provide for their families. “This Budget embodies values of inclusivity and fairness to provide a blueprint for rebuilding the economy. “Most of all it will help the families and businesses impacted by the steps we all had to take to keep each other safe and well.”

The additional housing places will be delivered by Kainga Ora, Community Housing Providers and transitional housing providers. Kainga Ora will finance its proportion of the additional 8000 places by increasing its borrowing over the next 4-5 years, anticipated to be about $5 billion. Rogue independent MP Jami-Lee Ross has confirmed her will set up a new political party. “A couple of weeks ago I raised publicly some questions about the state of our democracy. I also raised the fact that it’s time for new voices in Parliament and whether a new political party should be established,” he said. “A lot of feedback was received and there was overwhelming support to establish a new political party. We have decided to establish New Zealand’s newest political party:
Advance NZ.” To be able to contest the election Ross needs to show the Electoral Commission that at least 500 people have joined as members. “We are going ahead with establishing Advance NZ to give a voice to the voiceless who are being ignored by the two big party blocs on the left and right of politics,” Ross said. “Many New Zealanders are dissatisfied with the offering of current political parties in New Zealand. Politics doesn’t need to be about partisanship and
parties constantly attacking each other. We can come up with political solutions and achievements that deliver real long term wins for Kiwis.” He said New Zealanders deserve a new fresh group of MPs who will support fellow Kiwis, advance good policy and who will give a voice to the voiceless. “Politics doesn’t need to be about parties constantly at war, forgetting who they serve. We can come up with political solutions that work for New Zealanders without resorting to Wellington’s political games.”
Water safety warning ahead of Level 2 Water Safety New Zealand is urging boaties, recreational fishers and divers to follow safety guidelines as lockdown restrictions ease. “Boaties have been looking forward to the opportunity to get back out on the water. We just need everyone to take the necessary precautions so our frontline rescue services do not get overrun” says WSNZ Ceo Jonty Mills. Boaties are reminded to do all their gear and engine checks, make sure they have lifejackets for everyone on board as well as two waterproof ways to call for help. In over a third of the 12 powered boating preventable drowning
fatalities in 2019, lifejackets were either not available, or not worn correctly. “It’s also critical that whatever the water-based activity that people check the weather forecast” says Mills. “Tell someone where you are going.” Rock fishers are also reminded to think about safety, wear lifejackets, assess the conditions and not take unnecessary risks. There were 12 land-based fishing fatalities in 2019. “Our waters are cold and
especially so as we head into winter. If there is even a remote possibility you could end up in the water, ensure you know water survival skills, wear a lifejacket as well as clothing that gives you thermal protection,” says Mills. Scuba divers and Free divers should also carry out equipment checks, assess the conditions and stay within their limits. There were 11 underwater fatalities in 2019.

The club is still taking player registrations for the truncated season and Carson is excited about the “new board, a new sponsor..and the massive plans” to revitalise the club. Here’s hoping they can force their way back into the first divison under head coach Jarrod Young. He is joined by former Fencibles first team coach Danny Rattray as an assistant.
he new owner of a large block of land at Beachlands says it looks forward to engaging with the local community on the area’s future. A partnership comprising the NZ Super Fund and parties associated with the Russell Property Group became the new owner of the 250 hectare waterfront land holding in east Auckland, including the Formosa Golf Resort, following settlement of the acquisition announced earlier in March. NZ Super Fund head of direct investments Will Goodwin says that settlement was completed as
planned despite the Covid-19 lockdown and that Russell Property Group had been appointed as manager of the property. “The partnership will be exploring opportunities for the site with any future plans and associated infrastructure improvement to be developed in close consultation with the local community for the benefit of Beachlands and Auckland as a whole.” Russell Property group managing director Brett Russell says the acquisition consolidated the Formosa Golf Club & Resort site and the 620 Whitford-Maraetai Road site to cre-

Thank you so much again for everything you did for them.” “Thanks for all your assistance and invaluable teaching for my Cambridge exams. I am also extremely thankful to Sachini and all my past tutors. TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Fencibles AFC players are chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch after lockdown. Training started yesterday, with the club employing a staggered approach by allowing only selected teams to blow out the cobwebs at William Green Domain. The remainder of the club’s players aged from nine up to seniors will all gradually return to training over the next few weeks. No official start date has been set by NZ Football but they have stated that the postponement has been extended until at least Queen’s Birthday weekend (May 30). The government Alert Level 2 directive limits gatherings to 10 people, which Chairman Aaron Carson says ‘is a challenge given football is played with eleven.” Carson believes the division 2 league the club seniors currently play in will “be re-structured to end up playing local teams” as financial challenges associated with out of town travel will impact the leagues reach.

TRIBUTE
New Zealand Rugby League has advised they are not in a position to return to rugby league at the club level just yet. NZRL Communications manager Sophie Wills said in a press release last Wednesday, “There are no dates, just a phased approach we are looking to implement along with other winter codes at this stage.” She adds, “We will release further info and timelines subject to Gov updates on numbers permitted for grassroots sport in due course. “NZRL asks the rugby league community to adhere to a ‘Get Ready’ period for a minimum of two weeks. This is in light of Sport NZ today confirming that the 10-person gathering limit now applies to all community sport.” With this in mind, there will be no rugby league activity, training (contact and non-contact) or playing

Ross was a hugely popular life member who passed away suddenly on Thursday following a brief illness. His contribution to the Hornets was significant, coaching his son Matty from U6 restricted through to the U18 open grade. Ross served on the Hornets committee in 2008 and was appointed chairman for a period in 2009.
