General Election 2020 saw National record its worst showing since 2002.

Labour recorded an historic win claiming 49.1 per cent of votes (winning 64 seats) with National collecting 26.8 per cent (35 seats).

Labour can easily Govern outright however if it chooses to take the Greens on as a coalition partner, they would have another 10 seats.

Saturday night’s results mean local candidates Naisi Chen (Labour) and Damien Smith (ACT) get into Parliament on their party lists. The Botany seat was returned to National on Saturday night after debutant Christopher Luxon won the seat with a margin of 4771 (total 16,661) against Chen.

Special declaration votes still to be counted are estimated at 480,000 (17 per cent of total votes). This includes an estimated 66,000 overseas and dictation votes.

The total estimated votes (those counted on election night plus estimated special votes still to be counted) is 2,877,117.

Voter turnout for the 2020 General Election is estimated to be 82.5 per cent of those enrolled as at 6pm Friday October 16. This compares with a final 79.8 per cent turnout of those enrolled in 2017.

Enrolment applications are still being processed.

By 6pm on Friday October 16, 3,487,654 people were enrolled, or 92.5 per cent of eligible voters. The final enrolment rate in 2017 was 92.4 per cent. ➤ Turn to page 3

Luxon takes Botany seat for National

s the country waited with bated breath on Saturday evening while the early votes were being counted, there was a palpable buzz of excitement at the Botany Electorate night celebration, held at The Brook.

The celebratory evening was hosted by Christopher Luxon who made the much-anticipated transition from a rookie, unemployed politician to being National Party MP for Botany – beating his opponent Labour Party candidate Naisi Chen by more than 4000 votes.

An air of high expectation gripped everyone at The Brook as the former Air New Zealand CEO, labelled as the man who will be Prime Minister someday, addressed a diverse gathering of small business owners, National Party delegates, supporters, volunteers and party champions.

Giving due credit to his supporters, Luxon said, “You have done it!

Because of the hard work of our volunteers we have returned the great electorate of Botany to the National Party. This victory isn’t

mine, it belongs to the volunteers who’ve fought the good fight for us in Botany.

“I’ve had support from thousands of people in Botany, maybe not as much as we wanted it to be but it’s a pretty awesome result given in the context of what is happening this evening.”

While Luxon was a tad disappointed with the numbers that indicated Labour’s landslide victory, he said it also provided a great opportunity to change things. I thank Botany voters for putting their faith in me.

“I thank Botany voters for putting their faith in me. I’m pretty fired up and ready to go despite this result. A lot more work needs to be done than we had imagined we had to do....but I’m up to the challenge.

“I’m proud of our result in Botany because we’ve gone against the grain. But the next three years will be about rebuilding as a party. The road ahead will be challenging for us as a country but regardless of who you voted for, we will get through this as a proud country of New

Luxon’s wife Amanda said that she always knew that politics was on his radar. It was just a matter of time.

“Just a year ago, I stood on this stage and said thank you and goodbye to my Air New Zealand family but tonight I want to say thank you to all of you. We are really excited about taking this

journey with you.”

Referring to Luxon winning National’s nomination for the seat in 2019, Amanda told the Times that she was glad Chris had got in early to do the groundwork.

“He’s so committed to working day and night, meeting people in the community and getting to know them. I am glad he had the time to put in the hard work. I know he is very sincere. There is a lot of integrity.”

Amanda also shared their daughter Olivia’s video message from Melbourne. Olivia, who couldn’t return to Auckland to partake in her dad’s victory said, “The people of Botany are in good hands. Dad, thank you for constantly inspiring me, and always being there for me. It’s exciting that this is just the beginning and there are so many more adventures to come.”

Brown bolts home by huge margin in Pakuranga seat

P

akuranga MP Simeon Brown helped to keep east Auckland blue by easily winning re-election to Parliament at this year’s general election.

The 29-year-old celebrated his second successive victory in the electorate on Saturday night with wife Rebecca and daughter Anna along with friends and supporters at Daisy Chang restaurant in Howick.

With the preliminary votes counted as of Monday morning, Brown earned 18,977 candidate votes, beating out runner-up and Labour Party candidate Nerissa Henry, who received 9221.

Brown’s majority of 9756 is the largest of any National Party candidate in the country.

He told the Times on election night that he’s “incredibly grateful” for the support he received in Pakuranga and to be re-elected as its MP. “It’s a huge honour serving this community and I want to thank everyone who voted for me and

everyone who voted.

“It’s so great to see people taking part in our democracy.”

Brown says the party result for National across the county is “dis-

appointing and surprising”, but it’s been a “very tough time and a tough campaign”.

“We had the Covid-19 lockdown and we had a difficult time with

the National Party but I think we have done everything we can and voters had to make their minds up and make that decision. We accept that.”

Brown puts the party’s poor result down to several factors, including the pandemic.

“I think Covid-19 has changed everything and the Prime Minister had a huge amount of coverage on the airwaves which has been unprecedented,” he says.

“We had the second lockdown during the middle of the campaign which put people in a different mindset that has, I think, coloured the campaign.

“At the end of the day we have a job to do and that is represent the people who voted for us and the values of the National Party and we will continue to do that and hold this Government to account.”

Brown says he appreciates the efforts of his campaign volunteers.

“I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who’s been out there supporting me, knocking on doors, putting up signs, waving signs, delivering flyers and scrutineering.

“I’m hugely grateful for all their support. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

He says National Party leader Judith Collins did a “fantastic job” during the campaign and he supports her staying as leader.

“She took on the leadership at a very difficult and challenging time and she’s done everything she can.

“I’m very grateful for what she’s done, giving the National Party and our supporters and voters a very clear choice.

“She’s worked tirelessly during that time. You can’t fault what she’s done.”

Brown entered Parliament at the 2017 general election.

He’s the National Party’s spokesman for Corrections, Tertiary Education, and Youth, and associate spokesman for Education and Drug Reform.

Two MPs in on party lists in Botany

T

he Botany electorate has two additional new MPs who have come in via their party

lists.

Naisi Chen, who was 38th on the Labour list, and Damien Smith, 10th on the ACT party list become MPs following great results by their respective parties.

Chen said she is proud to be elected as a Labour List MP after Prime Minister-elect Jacinda Ardern and Labour swept back into Government on Saturday.

“With 49 per cent of the vote, New Zealanders gave Labour a strong mandate to continue with another term of transformational change in government,” Chen said.

“I’m honoured to be elected as a Labour List MP for the next Parliamentary term. I’m looking forward to starting my work

to ensure that east Auckland has an effective voice in the Labour government.”

Chen said she is committed to advocating for east Auckland, with a focus on representing all parts of the community.

She’s particularly focused on the Chinese community which represents over 35 per cent of east Aucklanders.

In Parliament, Chen has a number of key areas of interest. “I want to focus on issues around youth, arts and culture and information technology,” she said.

“As Labour continues to make transformational change for our society, I will seek to be a voice for the next generation and support Labour’s innovative solutions to the problems facing our community.

“I’m proud to have run a strong campaign in Botany and want to congratulate Chris Luxon on his election as MP for Botany.

“It’s great that our community will have three MPs to ensure the views of Botany residents resonate in Parliament from both the Government and opposition benches.”

Rotary ride-a- train or ferry End Polio campaign W

atch out for a sea of red at the Half Moon Bay Ferry on Friday, October 23 at 8.15am.

After last year’s success of ‘Ride a train to enable others to walk’ event, this year the event is going to touch new waters.

The ferry challenge is to visit all 12 destinations on the Auckland ferry network, starting from the Auckland ferry terminal at 6am and Kennedy Point (Waiheke) at 7am.

Just when the world is fighting a deadly battle against Coronavirus, the Rotary initiative of eradicating wild poliovirus from Africa recently made international headlines.

Immunizing more than 2.4 billion children in 122 countries since the last 30 years is an unimaginable feat, though sadly, the wild poliovirus still paralyses children in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.

The event initiated by District 9920 Rotary Foundation Chair Jennie Herring, End Polio Advocacy District Chair Ron Seeto and Past District Governor Gary Langford, will have Rotarians dressed in red `End Polio’ T-shirts and masks.

A logistical nightmare, the train tag-on-tag-off idea originated from Rotarian Mark Anderson from the Rotary Club of Beecroft, Sydney who along with his autistic son Dave took on the phenomenal challenge of covering 187 stations in one day.

They were joined by other Rotarians and managed to collect a whopping amount of $240,000 in donations. A 2:1 match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation meant the final amount donated was $720,000.

That makes the $76,000 raised

by Rotarians and Clubs last year in Auckland even more remarkable as the Gates multiplier makes the donation $218,000.

Summerset buys land at Half Moon Bay S

ummerset has purchased land to build its ninth retirement village in Auckland and its first in the East Auckland area.

The 2.8ha site is located off Thurston Place and is near the Half Moon Bay Marina.

Planning of the village is underway and will include independent living apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms, serviced apartments and care suites offering rest home and hospital care. The village will also include a memory care centre for people living with dementia, featuring an industry-leading design.

It is estimated that the total investment in the village will be around $300 million.

“The new village near Half Moon Bay Marina will be close to a range of amenities and dining options, as well as ferry services to the city and Waiheke Island, so it’s a great location for us.

Cook said the number of people aged 75+ was forecast to increase steadily in the east Auckland area.

“Our research estimates there are currently 8000 people in the 75+ age group in that part of Auckland, and the number is set to rise by 56 per cent in the next eight years.”

Spiller calls time on Howick’s oldest business

“N

o one will regret the time dedicated to chess, as it will help in any profession.”

It seems the most fitting of quotes - from former World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosyan - to mark the end game of long-time Howick retailer Paul Spiller.

Spiller, president of the Oceania Chess Federation, will lock the doors to Spillers Hammer Hardware on Howick’s main street for the last time at the end of the month.

It will close a chapter on three generations of entrepreneurship which began in 1952 when Paul’s grandfather Ossie Spiller moved into the Picton Street premises and opened a hardware store with his son Ross (Paul’s dad) there to help.

Ossie, from Cornwall in England, came to New Zealand in 1912 seeking a better life. He

and his wife Gladys spent many years in the grocery business with his brother-in-law in the King Country before moving to Howick and buying a general store in 1942 (now PaperPlus).

Paul has been at the helm for 41 years although he did work

with Dad for about 20 of those before Ross retired.

“I’ve been full-time there since I came back from overseas in 1979,” Spiller says.

He also served for 20 years on the Hammer Hardware board of directors from 1999 to 2019 and

was also the Howick Village Association chair for six years.

“Obviously it’s quite an emotional thing to deal with especially after 68 years and it’s been the hardest thing for me.

I’ve had such a strong link to the shop so to close it up is an emotional thing you go through.

“But now I’ve got my head around it. Really it took quite a while and that’s why initially I wasn’t ready for it but I am now, I know it’s time.

“Certainly, the tie is very strong for me there. We know so many people. I was just talking to some customers (this month) who have been in Howick since 1958 and they’ve been dealing with the store 60 years. It’s hard for those people too.”

Retail can be a tough game (Covid-19 and lockdowns have made it almost impossible).

Dealing with the big boxes, they had to go online and then do a pick-up in maybe a day or two.

“The lockdowns also demonstrated to me that business actually lost to the big box stores.

As soon as we went to level 2, the business dropped again. Before that we got these big spikes happening as people found it more convenient to come to us. Quite amazing.”

He will come to cope with this big change, as will the store’s many loyal customers.

“We’re the longest-established business especially as a family business - in the whole of Howick and Pakuranga without a doubt

“It’s been a process. I’m turning 63 next month. I’m not retiring exactly. I’m just looking for other business opportunities and to put my energies into some of my other passions in life,” he says.

“Chess is one of them. I’m looking at the possibility of a chess-related business. I’ve had a strong affiliation with chess for a long, long time so now my plan is to focus a bit more on that and maybe start a coaching kind of business - a chess academy out of Howick.

“There’s a real demand for coaching for young people. There’s more demand than we can provide for.”

He still chips away behind the scenes as president of the Oceania region. Closing the store down will open more horizons and give him time to explore. “I intend on doing a lot more travelling and play in a lot more events - get a bit more active again spend a bit more time with family,” Spiller says.

Also at the store is his wife Joanne. His brother John (a Howick Local Board member) retired from the business in January.

“Joanne has been an amazing help during Covid. We couldn’t have done it otherwise. Both of us were working as a team.

We were absolutely exhausted by the end of it but it was the only way it was going to work during that lockdown situation,” he says.

“For us, business was incredibly good because people couldn’t go to the big box stores so they came back to us because it was convenient to come to the front of our store and ask for what they wanted.

because when this business started, there was no Pakuranga really,. I think Readaway Books which recently changed to Poppies started in in 1957,” says Spiller.

“I think people have already been traumatised by Covid and they’ve been traumatised by the way banks have been treating people (through) closing, especially older people.

They’re finding it very difficult to deal with the changes. The post office has closed and also a lot of the older-established businesses in Howick have gone. People are dealing with a lot of change at the moment. That’s always hard.”

“We’ve managed …by just offering something different, a personal touch and being convenient and having a big range of products that people wanted,” he says.

“But having said that, it has been getting progressively difficult over the last four or five years especially since Bunnings have really upped their marketing and also Mitre10 Mega.”

The other factor - the elephant in the room - is online shopping.

The thing with the Hammer Group franchise - it is part of the Mitre 10 group - is the stores haven’t had an online presence.

“I think that has actually hurt us whereas all the big guys do have a very big, very strong online presence. You can order stuff by clicking a button. You can’t do that with Hammer. That’s the realisation now - you have to have a very strong presence.”

The parent group has been made aware of it. “It became brutally obvious during lockdown that the Hammer brand didn’t have that presence and it actually prompted one or two individuals to go out there and do their own thing which, really, they’re not supposed to,” says Spiller.

“I think there’s a lot more awareness for the need for that now and I think Covid has really changed the way that people do shop. People are shopping from home a lot more, they’re probably more reluctant to go out or they weren’t able to go out. It changed shopping dramatically.”

Spiller says there are a number of reasons around deciding to close the business.

He made the decision some two years ago.

And she’s right as it brought back to my mind what my husband’s specialist said to him when his medication didn’t seem to work but brought about a lot of side effects.

The medication is just to control the problem and when your body system is used to the medication, and can’t control the disease then a stronger drug will have to be prescribed.

Again, it will go through the same routine when the body gets used to the new medication; a stronger medication will have to be prescribed. In the end when drugs cannot control the disease, the diseased part of the colon will have to be surgically removed, followed by the possibility of an ostomy bag.

In the excitement of my husband’s complete and full recovery after taking the Honeydew honey without any side effects, I totally forgot about the disease not being able to be cured — I guess particularly with a natural product like honey which is considered as ‘old wives tale’!

Bunnings Warehouse worker stabbed A worker at the Bunnings Warehouse store in Botany was injured during an alleged robbery attempt on Thursday night.

Counties Manukau Police detective inspector Chris Barry says police inquiries into the incident, which happened at the business in Ti Rakau Drive on Thursday evening at about 6pm, are ongoing.

“A male has entered the store armed with a knife and stabbed a Bunnings staff member before demanding money,” Barry says.

“Another worker has quickly intervened and apprehended the male until police arrived.

Barnados calls on Kiwis to step up Over the rest of October, Barnardos is calling for Aotearoa to step up and take 10,000 steps a day to support New Zealand children affected by family violence.

It has been a tough year for the children of Aotearoa, but for some it’s been especially hard. In times of stress and uncertainty, the incidence of family violence rises. Children are present at 80 per cent of reported family violence incidences in the home. Even just witnessing violence can have a traumatic impact on children, affecting their development, Barnados said.

Howick resident and Barnardos Operations Manager Nancy Jelavich encourages her community to get behind the campaign. “At Barnardos we work together every day with those in our communities who are facing really tough issues poverty, family violence, and struggles with mental health and addiction,” Jelavich said.

“We’d love communities to support our children who have experienced family violence to feel safe again. So jump online and donate, or spread the word to your family and friends.

Because when children shine bright, Aotearoa shines bright.”

Barnardos runs a children’s safety programme called

“Barnardos NZ’s Footsteps to a Brighter Future fundraiser is a great way for communities around Aotearoa to make a positive difference for tamariki and do something good for their own personal mental and physical health at the same time.”

People can sign up as individuals or as part of a team - a great challenge to do with family, friends or work colleagues!

Everybody can dial a special number given by Spark (Telecom) and listen free for 10 minutes: Friday “World and New Zealand news”, Saturday “Health”, Sunday and Monday “Entertaining English”, Tuesday “Useful psychology”, Wednesday “The Russian language”, Thursday “Theatre”. From time to time we change topics.

At the moment I am involved in a wonderful project called “Entertaining English”. Russians living in NZ listen to my English lesson created in an unusual way. In my lessons I explain the origin of English words and use some zen techniques and some eidetic memory techniques.

I have been doing it for more than one year. People can ask me questions. Only the Russian community has this service. Any community can also organise it but they do not know about this wonderful possibility.

Can you help other communities to know about this service please?

It is so convenient! Old people who have no computer can use it easily. Actually it is easier than to use a computer. You need only a telephone. Russian people all over New Zealand use this service every day.

I am a Russian linguist, have a PhD in applied linguistics. I have worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences all my life, researching automatic translation from Japanese and automatic recognition of Chinese characters. I have created a Computerised Grammar of the Japanese language and have about 200 publications (including patents in Japan) on Japanese, Chinese and English languages .

My life-long work at th eRussian Academy of Sciences in applied linguistics has helped me create a new method of teaching foreign languages.

Annual rugby club luncheon a big success C

lose to 200 people packed Pakuranga United Rugby Club on Friday for its annual luncheon and auction.

More than $30,000 was raised on the day for the club’s shade sail project and the junior player support fund.

Guest speaker was Radio Sport personality Martin Devlin and MC was ‘Crackers’.

PURC general manager Stephen Hackett said: “We are so humbled by the level of support shown by the community once again at our annual luncheon. 2020 has been really tough year for sports clubs so to have this level of support really heartens us for what the future looks like.”

Marvellous Clarke destroys Aussie Matilda’s waltz

f Clarke Kent can transform into Superman, Caleb Clarke must be Captain Marvel after his magnificent performance in the All Blacks 27-7 second Bledisloe Cup triumph on Sunday..

Incredibly, the muscular 21-yearold caused 12 of the Wallabies’ 40 missed tackles, five in one electrifying, stampeding charge.

This was Clarke’s first start after an impressive short appearance off the reserves bench in the Wellington test.

Not since a teenage Bryan Williams bewildered opponents with his dazzling sidestep on the All Blacks 1970 tour of South Africa and Jonah Lomu’s power at the 1995 World Cup left opponents and fans awestruck, has a New Zealand wing risen to such heights in so short a time.

No wonder head coach Ian Foster was keen to keep in check expectations of Clarke repeating this performance every time he receives the ball. But there is no doubt this humble son-of-a-gun, Eroni, has the X factor.

Caleb Clarke finished his second test and first start with 138 metres, three line breaks, 12 tackle busts and two offloads from eight carries.

The oft quoted, “One man’s misfortune is another man’s opportunity,” was realised once more when Clarke took advantage of George Bridge’s injury.

Bridge is a smart wing who ticks all the boxes and has done his country proud.

Clarke is not yet as complete but his acceleration and explosive

power makes him an excitement machine.

He also has the happy knack of a champion centre by drawing two defenders into the tackle before passing it to an unmarked tryscorer. However the national selectors will be content to allow him to grow his international apprenticeship as a wing.

Great, too, to see Beauden Barrett return to his best in this test with some scintillating runs.

Apart from Clarke, other All Black rookies to front a stern Australian challenge were lock Tupou Vaa’i , loosehead prop Alex Hodgman and Hoskins Sotutu.

All did well, especially 19-year-old Vaa’i who had to fill the big boots of vastly experienced Sam Whitelock from the start.

Considering their inexperience, it was heartening confirmation of the depth that exists within the New Zealand game.

With rugged Sam Cane having another blinder alongside Ardie Savea and Shannon Frizell, the loose forwards combined nicely.

Understandable Wallabies coach Dave Rennie was disappointed at his team’s poor defence and ball retention after their robust effort in the 16-all drawn first test. With two more Bledisloe Cup tests to be played on home soil, they will be determined to turn the tables.

They have some fine players but the loss of injured playmaker

second-five Matt To’omua limited the attacking options of powerful three-quarters Marika Koroibete, Hunter Paisami and Filipo Daugunu. So, too, did the rock-solid defence of Anton Lienert-Brown and Jack Goodhue.

First-five James O’Connor can be a dangerous attacker but lacks the vision of a To’omua or Richie Mo’unga.

Meanwhile while Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin couldn’t retain his Bathurst crown with a disappointing fifth, Shane van Gisbergen kept the New Zealand flag flying high by winning the prestigious event on Sunday.

It was a splendid performance from the former St Kentigern College student who withstood the strong challenge of Cameron Waters.
