RSA looking for new home

By NICK KRAUSE

T

he Howick RSA – which was recently sold – has a temporary base at its Sale Street flats which will be used until new premises are found. Howick RSA president Ray Sangster confirmed to the Times the aged property had been sold to a developer for multi-millions. One media group reported it had sold for $4-$6 million to a Malaysian developer. “We are still very much focused on our core philosophy of returned services,” Sangster said. A base had been set up as a welfare office at the RSA’s flats in Sale Street, Howick “while we decide and look for more permanent premises”. “Members can go there to discuss issues with the welfare office,” said Sangster. Members have been using Bosuns Bar at The Prospect of

Howick in Picton Street where the Eternal Flame and Ode of Remembrance Light have been placed since the RSA closed the doors to its Wellington Street headquarters in May 2021. The RSA building was home to the Howick Returned and Services Community for 40 years. When it shut its doors, it was in anticipation of a major joint venture redevelopment on the site. The site’s redevelopment was to have taken up to two years however Covid lockdowns and the impact on supply chains and a subsequent massive increase in development costs saw a mutual scrapping of the joint venture plans, deemed to have become untenable. The Auckland Council-backed height restriction of 9 metres was also a factor. This left the RSA executive with no option but to consider its options given it was still paying out thousands of dollars a month

The RSA was recently sold for several million dollars to a developer. for rates, insurances and other bills in a building that no longer met current building codes with estimates it could cost up to $1 million to bring it up to standard. A vote at a recent extraordinary general meeting resulted in an almost unanimous decision to divest themselves of the property. “We’re still committee to the core philosophy of the RSA and Armistice Day. Nothing has changed in 60 years [operating in Howick],” Sangster said. He recognises there was a minority unhappy with the sale of the property. Staying there or undertaking major requisite building work was unfeasible. “We’d been losing money for a long time, possibly as long ago as 2013. We did not have a building warrant of fitness,” he said.

“The building was costing $5000 to $7000 per month to stay empty. We put it [the sale] to members and 110 voted for the sale, 12 were against and there were two abstentions.” The sale proceeds have been invested. “We’re working through that at the moment. We’re realigning the operations as opposed to re-establishing them. The Poppy Trust and Welfare Trust are still operating, he said. “We have a working group formed which will come back with recommendations and we will go back to members.” He added that Bosuns was still used by some members and the Ode was read at 6pm every Friday. “What’s touching is the public [in that bar] are always respectful.”

Climate change inspires art A contemporary east Auckland art gallery has commissioned two new works as part of a “groundbreaking” global alliance of artists and writers in 28 countries responding to climate change. Te Tuhi in Pakuranga is featuring works by Jae Hoon Lee and Tia Barrett as part of the ongoing World Weather Network group project. The gallery commissioned the works, Lee’s Ocean Rain, Part 1 and Barrett’s Tuhononga (Cluster and Connection), which are curated by Janine Randerson. Lee is a self-proclaimed “cultural wanderer” who grew up in Seoul, South Korea, before moving to the United States in 1993 and then to New Zealand in 1998. His work is the first of a twopart film project exploring mushroom-like stone formations created by geological forces in Taiwan’s Yehliu Geopark.

A still image from a video work by artist Jae Hoon Lee on show at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga. Photo supplied Jae Hoon Lee “The weather conditions and large seas have altered the geography into uncanny landforms the artist speculates could become stranger still as the climate drives larger seas and erodes the coastline,” the gallery says. Barrett is an emerging Maori

moving-image practitioner and photographer based in Hamilton while her current art practice is “firmly grounded in celebrating mana wahine Maori identity (Maori women’s rights) and deepening her connection to whenua me o nga tupuna (land and ancestors) through a lens-based practice”. Her contribution to the new showcase at Te Tuhi is a film that’s the first of her two-part project. It was developed through an “ongoing observational learning journey” in the South Island and features footage assembled during a recent collective walk from Waitaki to Aoraki. “As part one ... the film records the appearances, sensations, and sounds of specific moments and weather significant to Barrett during the hikoi,” Te Tuhi says. The gallery has joined 27 other arts organisations globally in 2021

to form the World Weather Network. It describes the project as a “groundbreaking constellation of ‘weather stations’ located across the world in oceans, deserts, mountains, farmland, rainforests, observatories, lighthouses and cities”. “Since June 21, 2022, artists and writers have shared ‘weather reports’ in the form of observations, stories, images and imaginings about their local weather and our shared climate, creating an archipelago of voices and viewpoints on a new global platform. “Whilst each organisation reports on their local weather, every one of these ‘weather stations’ is connected by the over-heating of the world’s atmosphere. The World Weather Network presents alternative ways of responding to the world’s weather and climate, and is an invitation to look, listen, learn and act.”

A man charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of an unborn baby following a street racing incident in east Auckland has pleaded not guilty. The man, who has name suppression, appeared before Justice Mathew Downs in the Auckland High Court on December 13. He was initially charged by police on November 30. Detective senior sergeant Dean Batey, of Counties Manukau East Police’s criminal investigation branch, earlier said the charge following an investigation into an incident involving illegal street racing. It happened just after 11pm on May 19 at the intersection of Bruce Roderick and Offenhauser Drives in East Tamaki, Batey said.

“Around this time a vehicle that was allegedly involved in the illegal street racing struck a spectator, who was pregnant. “The woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition and emergency surgical procedures were required to be carried out. “Tragically, the baby girl did not even survive the day and succumbed to her catastrophic injuries.” Batey said an investigation has been ongoing into the circumstances of what took place that night and the 22-year-old driver was already before the Manukau District Court on numerous driving offences. “Police have now laid an additional charge of manslaughter against this man.”

LEAD STORY

MUM WANTS NEW GENDER AND SEXUALITY GUIDELINES

By CHRIS HARROWELL

A

n east Auckland parent strongly opposed to some of the material to be taught to primary school children on gender and sexuality wants to see what the new Government plans to replace it with. The relationships and sexuality guidelines (RSE) implemented by the previous Labour Government were met with a backlash from parents who believe they’re inappropriate for younger children. The Ministry of Education (MoE) has provided schools with guidelines to assist the preparation and delivery of sex education, which is part of the New Zealand Curriculum. Part of the National Party’s coalition agreement with New Zealand First states the new Government will “refocus the curriculum on academic achievement

and not ideology, including the removal and replacement of the gender, sexuality, and relationship-based education guidelines”. The Times contacted Education Minister Erica Stanford’s office for comment on when parents can expect to see the RSE guidelines removed and replaced and what they’ll be replaced with, but did not receive a response. As recently reported, Mellons Bay School parent Katherine Chua is strongly opposed to some of the RSE material that was to be taught in schools under the previous Government. She says children are not able to give consent to “permanent life-altering ideologies which can tell them their body is wrong, just because if they do not fit the typical stereotypes for a boy or girl”. She’s expressed her opinions on the current RSE guidelines to Mellons Bay School and distrib-

Katherine Chua says she may opt her children out of the new relationships and sexuality guidelines altogether. Times file photo Wayne Martin uted flyers she had printed on the issue to parents. Chua says while she should be grateful for any promise to

repeal and replace the RSE guidelines, “it feels too little, too late for an ideology that’s strongly undermined respect and trust in schools, and which is right now causing physical and relational harm to children and families”. “Any review and replacement of the RSE is likely to take a long time, especially if consultation is planned. It was not prioritised to be halted in the [Government’s] 100-day plan. Changes are limited to the RSE and exclude ‘inclusive education’ policies which would continue the use of preferred pronouns and hiding gender changes from parents. “Even if the RSE is replaced, using a robust consultation process, I am likely to opt my kids out of any RSE lessons, unless it was limited to biology-based pubertal and anatomy lessons. “If the intrusion on parental rights continues, depending on the content of the Curriculum refresh, I would consider leaving

public education altogether.” MoE Hautu (Deputy Secretary) Te Tai Raro (North) Isabel Evans previously said the RSE guide recommends exploring gender stereotypes as a means of promoting critical inquiry, reflection, and social-action skills related to issues of equity, gender, body image, risk and safety. “The RSE guide promotes challenging unhelpful stereotypes such as those that may limit aspirations, opportunities and careers. “Key learning in the RSE is organised according to curriculum levels which provides developmentally- and age-appropriate guidance on what teachers can include in the health curriculum.” Evans says parents and caregivers have the legal right to withdraw their children from any aspect of the health curriculum by writing to their school’s principal.

Injured man dies in hospital P

olice say they’re investigating a man’s death a week after a vehicle struck a group of people standing on an east Auckland footpath. Six people were reported to have been injured during the incident, which happened at about 5.30pm on December 10 in Prince Regent Drive, Half Moon Bay. Photos taken of the scene showed a dark-coloured Volkswagen station wagon parked in the road not far from a damaged bench seat inside a bus stop. The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle is facing seven charges including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and injures with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He appeared in the Manukau District Court the follow-

dent has caused great concern amongst the community, and we are continuing to investigate

the circumstances of what took place,” a police spokesperson said earlier. “We would like to acknowledge the witnesses that have come forward so far to assist our investigation. “Anyone who has not yet made contact with police is asked to get in touch.” On December 18 police said they’re now investigating a sudden death a week on from the collision. “Five people were hospitalised at the time of the incident, including an elderly man, who was located near the scene of the incident. “Police are still working to establish the nature of his involvement, but sadly, this man died in hospital yesterday.

“Police are treating the man’s death as unexplained, and further enquiries will need to be carried out around any involvement he had in the incident. This will include a post-mortem examination. “At this stage police are not in position to formally release any further details about the man. “We are making sure there is support available to his family. ‘We will bring discipline back’

Police responded to a serious crash involving a motorcycle in Bleakhouse Road, Howick, on December 13. Times photo Chris Harrowell

Passenger injured as motorcyclist flees from police  By CHRIS HARROWELL A motorcycle passenger injured in a crash in east Auckland is recovering from the incident in a stable condition. Emergency services were called to Bleakhouse Road in Howick just before 3pm on December 13. Numerous sirens belonging to police, St John Ambulance vehicles and fire trucks could be heard from the Times Newspapers’ office in Howick Village as they arrived at the scene. Photos posted to social media showed a number of emergency service vehicles at the intersection of Ridge Road and Bleakhouse Road

as the user of a local community Facebook page warned people to avoid the area. At about 4pm that day a police spokesperson said emergency services were in attendance at a crash involving a motorcycle. “Police had signalled for the rider to stop on Bleakhouse Road, around 2.50pm, however it failed to do so and fled from police before crashing a short time later. “Police did not pursue the motorcycle at any point and members of the public directed police to the crash location. “One person, the passenger of the motorbike, has

received serious injuries. The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.” The entry to Bleakhouse Road was blocked off as police examined the scene. An upright black motorcycle could be seen near a police vehicle later that afternoon. In an update on December 18, police told the Times they aren’t seeking additional witnesses in relation to the crash. “Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing. “One person was transported to hospital with serious injuries at the time. “They are now recovering in a stable condition.”

The new coalition Government has been in office for a few weeks, and the previous Government’s economic mismanagement continues to be exposed. The Auditor-General released a shocking report, highlighting Labour’s reckless spending in infrastructure. Labour Ministers were committing billions of dollars to projects with insufficient due diligence or clearly documenting what they were doing. Recently released data from Stats NZ shows GDP declined by 0.3 per cent in the three months up until the end of September and the economy shrank in three of the past four quarters. The Auditor-General also released a shocking report, highlighting the previous Labour Government’s poor investment in infrastructure. Labour Ministers were committing billions of dollars to projects with insufficient due diligence or clearly documenting what they were doing. This coalition Government has inherited an economic mess and the country is now in need of urgent economic repair after being mishandled by Labour for the past six years. Labour’s decision to spray the money hose with wild abandon is likely to have repercus-

sions for years to come. We will bring discipline back to spending and tidy up the mess that has been left behind by Labour. We have already begun at speed to implement our ambitious 100day plan. Already, the Government has passed legislation to restore the Reserve Bank’s sole focus on lowering inflation, we have removed the ‘Ute Tax’ and unwound the mandatory union-driven so-called Fair Pay Agreements legislation. All of this is part of our plan to restore economic confidence and give relief to struggling families and businesses. The countdown to Christmas is truly upon us. Last week I attended the 70th Howick Santa Parade and what a fantastic day it was, with hundreds turning out to watch the parade. It is a privilege to be one of the two local MPs to attend, along with neighbouring Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown. It is always a highlight of the year seeing the community come together. This Christmas break, I’ll be sending time with my family before diving straight back into work to get this great country of ours back on track. This Government will focus on strengthening

From the Prime Minister

Christopher Luxon New Zealand’s economy to ease the cost of living, provide income tax relief for lower-and middle-income workers, restore law and order so we all feel safer, deliver better public services like health and education, and drive the skills, technology and infrastructure needed to support future growth. New Zealand should be a country where, if you work hard, you can get ahead, and the Government I lead wants to help New Zealand find its mojo again. There is so much potential to realise and I am delighted and excited to be getting on with the job and delivering more on our promises in the new year. I hope that you all have a wonderful and safe summer break, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all your support and I look forward to what 2024 will bring.  Christopher Luxon is the Prime Minister and MP for Botany

Point View rule Writer’s Quiz P

oint View School’s A team has won the Interschool Writer’s Quiz Competition and its B team came third-equal. At the end of Term 1, 22 year 6 students were invited to join the Writer’s Quiz group. The goal was to read assigned books with a view to enter the inter school competition held each year at Baverstock School. “We all had to read 10 books and write questions about the books at home, and we met with Ms Groot every Monday morning to switch books,” said students Manayah and Rio. “You had to read one book every week or you would be eliminated if you couldn’t keep up. Some people fell off the pace but most people finished reading their books by the beginning of Term 3. “There were 14 students who

You had to read one book every week or you would be eliminated if you couldn’t keep up.” STUDENTS

Point View School took out first and third place out of 17 schools competing in the Writer’s Quiz Competition, and there were 32 teams. Competition was fierce. Photo supplied managed to read all 10 books, so we had to do a test set by Ms Meta Groot. Only the top six scorers would get into the interschool team and represent Point View at the competition.

“The top six scorers were HanSeo, Ella, Joanna, Manayah, Shenali and Rio. Each team was composed of three students. There were questions on the books we had been

assigned that were read out and we had to answer them on our team’s piece of paper. We also heard quotes from the books and had to identify which book they came from. There were 17 schools, and there were 32 teams. Competition was fierce. “The quotes were quite tricky, but we did our best. Throughout the competition, the host gave out spot prizes to different

schools,” the students said. “We took away two books for Point View School as spot prizes. They gave us leaderboard updates after each round, and both Point View teams were doing quite well throughout the whole competition.” At the end of the competition, Point View B Team came 3rd-equal in the competition and Point View A Team won. The A team received a voucher and a free book, and proudly took home the wooden book trophy. “A huge thank you to Ms Groot for running the Writer’s Quiz programme,” Point View School said. “Also, thank you to all the parents for supporting your child throughout their Writer’s Quiz journey, and the teachers who read the books and wrote questions for the students to revise.”

Multi-cultural festival well received The Rotary Club of Auckland Airport recently held its annual multi-cultural festival. This popular event was born out of the division created by differing opinions surrounding the Covid injections. “As we came out of the period of restrictions it became obvious to us that our communities needed healing by being brought together within a common cause,” the club’s Guy Slocum said. “That idea quickly grew to include a desire to bring different ethnicities and their cultures together in a spirit of friendship, knowledge and understanding.

“So, at the event, we invited a large number of ethnicities to come to a social evening for good conversation and a multitude of performances from different cultures. “Everybody attending brought food from their culture and this gave all participants an opportunity to enjoy food that they might not have experienced before. We are very grateful to Barfoot and Thompson Consultants Simone Young, Lorreta Li and the Howick office of Barfoot and Thompson who kindly sponsored this year’s event which allowed us to expand the evening to new heights.”

Barlow, Fletcher win gold Saint Kentigern College students Imogen Barlow and Paige Fletcher claimed gold medals at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Christchurch. Held from December 8-10, Barlow won gold in both the junior girls’ 3000m and 1500m and Fletcher won gold in the junior girls hammer and silver in the shot put. Fletcher was also named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field and Road Championships Team. Imogen Barlow, left, picked up two gold medals; Paige Fletcher, right, brought home a gold and silver. Photos supplied

Despite the name of the Rotary Club, it is a regional club and draws members from North Shore, Manukau, Weymouth and Papakura although most of our members live in the Howick, Pakuranga and Botany areas. “We are currently expanding and would welcome interest from anyone, of any age, who likes the idea of impacting the community in a beneficial and fun way. “Our activities are very diverse and there is something to interest everyone,” said Slocum. For more information please contact Guy Slocum on 0278952909.

Christmas trees chopped

St Mark’s Catholic Church along Pakuranga Road had its cypress trees cut by individuals on Saturday, December 16 at around 3am. The individuals came in the early hours, with a cutting tool and chopped two trees planted along Pakuranga Road. The trees included Christmas lights. This a fair warning to the community who may or might have already experienced the same incident during this time of the year.

A woman says she was left in shock after staff at a popular east Auckland retail store falsely accused her of being a known shoplifter. Misha Peters told the NZ Herald newspaper the upsetting incident happened at Kmart Botany on December 13. She’d spent about 90 minutes doing her Christmas shopping when she was approached by a group of police officers. They told her the store had accused her of being a known shoplifter and its staff were concerned she would leave with a trolley full of items. Peters finished her shopping at the store and bought items worth more than $800. She later received an apology from Kmart via email which says: “Firstly, I want to sincerely apologise for the distressing experience you endured, and I am truly sorry for any embarrassment and

inconvenience caused during what should have been a joyful Christmas shopping spree. “Such behaviour from our staff is not reflective of the standards we uphold at Kmart, and we are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. “To demonstrate our commitment to making this right, we would like to offer you a sincerest apology.” Peters is unaware why the store falsely accused her of being a shoplifter and said she’s never stolen anything in her life.

A police spokesperson told the Times: “Police can confirm we responded to a report of an incident at an address on Ti Rakau Drive, Botany, around 8.15pm on December 13. “Upon arrival, police spoke to staff and an individual in the store regarding potential suspicious behaviour, however no further police action was required, and police left the premises around 8.50pm.” The Times attempted to contact Kmart Botany but no one answered the phone.

Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan-forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Bring a saucepan of water to the boil. Blanch asparagus in the boiling water for 30 seconds or until just tender. Drain. Rinse under cold water to stop the asparagus cooking further. Drain well. Quarter each pastry sheet into 4 squares and place on tray. Top each square with

asparagus and a slice of brie. Brush pastry edges with a little egg, then fold over to enclose filling. Brush pastry with egg. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and crisp. To make the honey dressing, place the dressing ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Season with pepper. Serve puff pastries with honey dressing.

THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL!

We had no clue when we first interviewed former Howick local and MKR NZ contestant Vikki Gordon-Tibbits (issue dated Nov 8) that both she and her partner Pascal would be declared the ultimate champions of My Kitchen Rules New Zealand 2023. A quick follow-up with the winning couple who cooked up an exquisite feast for NZ’s top chefs and bagged a cool $100,000 in the grand finale of TVNZ’s MKR NZ. DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE THE WINNERS OF MKR NZ WHEN WE DID THE Q & A WITH YOU? The night of the grand finale, all the contestants, our grand final opponents Matt & Kurt, with their friends and family and ours all celebrated watching the episode together at the Bird cage in Auckland. We were all watching it together to hear the results. As they originally filmed two endings to the episode, we had to wait until the show was aired to find out who won! It was wonderful to have all our friends, family and contestants celebrating together.

HAS REALITY SUNK IN? HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE THE BIG WIN? It’s still sinking in really, with the busy Xmas season upon us, we are winding up work for the year and children’s activities etc. I think it will resonate once we have a break over the Xmas/ new year, spending time with the children, friends, and family.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SPEND THE PRIZE MONEY OF $100,000? DOES IT FEEL LIKE WINNING A LOTTO TICKET? It’s better than winning lotto because you know you have put

in a lot of work to get to the finals, and we poured our souls into the grand final dishes. Looking back on what we have plated up, we wouldn’t have changed much as we were very pleased with what we produced for the guest judges considering we are home cooks. It was an absolute honour to cook in Sid’s kitchen at The French Café – it’s big and spacious with epic appliances and a large viewing window out to the diners. Never would I have dreamt we would have the chance to cook there, but it’s a memory that will last a lifetime.

As they originally filmed two endings to the episode, we had to wait until the show was aired to find out who won!

WHAT’S THE NEXT BIG CHALLENGE YOU LOOK FORWARD TO? We have a few ideas we are working on, the prize money is helping with that. I have one product in R&D currently, hope to release that soon if we get good feedback and another we are researching now. Ideally, long term we’d love to host dinner parties and events at our farm, using home grown produce and cooked fresh for people, in our home kitchen. We have got a bit of work to be done on the farm and hope to spend time over the Xmas holidays on it. Also, we can’t leave our design backgrounds and would be keen to incorporate our passion for food and design together – i.e. hospitality design, so the setting and the food are very close companions. Another thing that’s keeping us busy right now is we’re currently mid rehearsals for the

Summer Shakespeare Tauranga production of The Tempest which Pascal is directing and I’m producing. It’s being held at the Te Puna Quarry in Tauranga from the February 8-17, 2024.

DID THE PRESSURE EVER GET TO YOU? BOTH PASCAL AND YOU SEEMED VERY CALM IN THE FINAL COOK OFF. Pascal and I just genuinely love cooking – it wasn’t stressful for us as we love to prepare and

present – we tackled it in a way that we do for our design work. With having a clear plan and keeping to what we know and love best, it was key. We put together flavours and products that we adore and would want to order if we went to a restaurant, but with our own twist. Were so pleased we stuck to what we love, stayed true to ourselves and gave it 110 per cent. We are also super proud of Matt and Kurt and honoured to have competed against these gents in the grand finale. I’m sure we will be talking about their bisque for many years!

WHAT’S YOUR BEST MKR MOMENT? It’s hard to pick just one, as we thoroughly enjoyed all of it, from cooking in various kitchens, hosting the amazing judges and contestants at home – and cooking for such esteemed guest judges in the finale, we enjoyed the challenges and would be up to doing it all over again! Pascal is more than my ‘sous’ chef – he’s a very talented man and so pleased to share this journey together for our future. Also, another funny moment was Colin stealing my martini when we were in our kitchen at our instant restaurant.

WHITE CHRISTMAS GARDEN PARTY Instead of just dreaming of a White Christmas, Val Lott decided to host one with the dress code being white. Luckily, the sun gods were pleased with the decision, and decided to shine bright as the White Christmas Party in Val’s beautiful garden, celebrated the spirit of the season with old friends and new.

IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS It was a picture-perfect day for the Burn Support Group Xmas party held on Sunday at Cockle Bay Beach. With 60 burn survivors along with family, the day provided much laughter and merriment. It was Auckland Jet Ski, who generously gave their time and toys to ensure everyone had a great time. Raffles were won, there was the clever Miss Fox face painter, Mr Whippy and Spit Roast Catering for lunch. All in all, a fabulous event for kids and adults alike. A wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle, rekindle new friendship, and enjoy a perfect day with very courageous, inspiring, and beautiful people.
