LOOKING BACK 2023 – MAY Unhappy homeowners consider lawyers

A group of Waller Avenue homeowners are against what they claim is an unfair development which ‘violates their rights and benefits’. Pictured is an advertisement from the Times from the 1970s in which there is reference to height restrictions to ‘preserve the beautiful views forever’.

A group of disgruntled Buckland Beach residents is against the height of a proposed development in Waller Avenue and may even bring in lawyers. The residents say a resource consent for two three-storey dwellings at 43 Waller Avenue breaches a private restrictive height covenant which was attached to properties on the street at the time of their development in the 1970s.

April – Anzac Day a time to remember

February – Perspectives runs until March 11

January – Escape to Howick Village for shopping, cafes, art, entertainment

Howick Village is embracing the New Year. The welcome sunshine at the weekend and into the beginning of the week lifted moods too after recent storms and heavy rain. With the return to work this week by many locals, the village is open and looking forward to serving shoppers and diners moving forward into 2023.

Perspectives: Te Tai Ao, Notions of The Universal exhibition by The Flowers Art Collective runs in the Malcolm Smith Gallery until March 11. It features the sacred significance of whanau bonds, rewriting of stories told through photographs, uprising of artists through challenges of Covid and the horror of the Ukraine War. It provides a taste of the diversity with the theme of the universal brought into the art arena. The exhibition features the work of the Flowers Art Collective, 11 artists of diverse ethnicity and viewpoints, brought together by a common interest in the challenge of bringing the illusive into tangibility.

At dawn on Tuesday, April 25, we will gather on Stockade hill to commemorate Anzac Day. History defines the events of the First World War. However, we gather not to glorify war, but to remember and acknowledge the courage of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Ray Sangster, President, Howick RSA Last week, a small contingent from the Howick RSA laid out the field of crosses on Stockade Hill in remembrance of the battles fought. Times photo Wayne Martin

Congratulations to this year’s finalists for the 17th Estuary Art and Ecology Awards. This year there were more than 80 incredible entries which judge Benjamin Work had the difficult task of whittling down to 20 finalists. The finalists are Jenny Tomlin, Lisa Bate, Gabriela Rozenberg, Kim Logue, Siniva Williams, Tony Clarke, Daisy Nicholas, Wendy Hannah, Kiran McKinnon, Matthew Dowman, Brendan Kitto, Susan Ewen, Amanda Watson, Franca Bertani, Anna Tang, Andrew Rankin, Ainsley O’Connell, Fiona Lee Graham, Anna Gedson and Ekaterina Dimieva. The highly commended artists are Pass The Blue Collective, Hana Carpenter, Teresa Lane, Judith Lawson and Vanessa Narbey.

July – Anyone can play guitar “I couldn’t possibly play guitar – I’m too old / not talented enough / no-one in my family plays / my hands are too small.” There are many excuses for not trying, but here’s the good news. In 25-plus years of teaching many hundreds of students, I can count on one hand the people who I genuinely felt couldn’t learn guitar. Of those, one is still having lessons with us nine years later and sounding great! Becoming a good guitar player takes three things: the right guidance and support, commitment and perseverance. October – More businesses come to village Despite the slow national business environment, positive activity in Howick Village continues with commercial premises never empty for long. Recently the Village has welcomed Expert Barbers, Growing Younger Fitness Studio, Louis & Max, Mankelow Accountants, Ray of Light Coaching and Sky Nails & Beauty. Based on their respective social media posts, we can look forward to the openings of Despensa (a Mexican-themed restaurant) and Posto (specialising in Neapolitan style woodfire pizzas) in October. MTF Finance are also in the process of setting up shop in the Village. A very warm welcome to all these businesses and I am sure Howickians, and those from further afield, will give these plenty of support.

December – There’s a lot to look forward to Another year has almost passed. Probably a year that many will be pleased to see the end of. Weather has not been great, criminal and antisocial behaviour has affected many, the economy has been a challenge and the tail of Covid still lingers. Having said that, there was plenty to cheer about in Howick Village. The Cultural Food Festival earlier in the year and the recent Star Insurance Hop were two key events that not only gave Howickians enjoyable days but introduced many outsiders to the village. A segment of Marine Parade in Mellons Bay, on the coastal side and adjacent to a grass bank, is impacted by a slip that’s seen one lane blocked to vehicles as cracks in the road continue to widen.

At only 16-years-old, it is hard to comprehend what Braxton Sorensen-McGee, has achieved as an athlete. Whether it be being recognised as the NZ Rugby League U16 girls’ player of the year in 2022 or contributing to the Auckland Storm winning the Farah Palmer Cup competition, there’s not much she hasn’t done. And now as she approaches her final year of schooling at Auckland Girls Grammar School (AGGS) in 2024, there is confidence that she could be the youngest ever Kiwi Fern and Black Fern double representative.

Incoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is mobbed by pupils during a visit to Cockle Bay School on October 19.

LOOKING BACK 2023 – DECEMBER Naval rig flagpole has new home A very special flagpole has been relocated to Stevenson Reserve on Cook Street in Howick. Howick Local Board chair Damian Light said, “The new site on the crest of Stevenson Reserve will ensure that this unique piece of local history is once again available for the public to enjoy.”

Record broken in Point to Pub run Christmas carols on the hill The crowds flocked to Stockade Hill on Sunday night for the annual Carols by Candlelight presented by Howick Brass. It was a perfect way to end a perfect day, whetting the appetite for Christmas which is just days away. And what a wonderful backdrop with Stockade Hill’s iconic Christmas tree and the columns of trees leading up to the Cenotaph illuminated in green and red.

There was a huge turn out on Sunday for the Point to Pub Family Fun Run. There were 140 entries, great weather and lots of fun had by families and friends. The race starts at Musick Point and ends at The Prospect in Howick. Fastest male was Connor Jamieson, 17, with a time of 26.01m – a record for the Point to Pub. Second was Nick Luksich [29.28m] and 3rd Adam Berry, with a pram [31.12m].

Shopper in shock over false accusation of theft A woman says she was left in shock after staff at a popular east Auckland retail store falsely accused her of being a known shoplifter. Misha Peters told the NZ Herald newspaper the upsetting incident happened at Kmart Botany on December 13. She’d spent about 90 minutes doing her Christmas shopping when she was approached by a group of police officers. The historic naval rig flagpole that once stood at 34 Moore Street is now installed in Stevenson Reserve.

The essay topic was “Sustainability of the Mangemangeroa Valley”. Evie received her award and certificate at the Year 10 award ceremony at Howick College on December 6. The competition was named after Allan Riley to honour his work as founder and Chairman of the Friends of Mangemangeroa Society and his involvement in many other community and conservation organisations.
