Traffic fears grow over 92-unit development

Aresident living near the site of a proposed largescale east Auckland housing development is worried about the impact it may have on traffic congestion in the local community.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, lives in Compass Point Way in Half Moon Bay.

His home is near the site in Pigeon Mountain Road presently occupied by the Stand for Children charity.

The charity has sold its land to developer HND HMB Ltd, which is proposing to build 92 residential units across 26 blocks on the 1.4 hectare property a short distance from Half Moon Bay Marina.

The resident says the number of parking spaces planned for it is “insufficient”.

At the top of Compass Point Way there’s parking available on one side only and a time zone on the other, he says.

“Come the weekend there’s

another 20 car parks taken.

“The issue is when people are coming off the ferry and trying to leave ... and then people coming to the ferry parking on the road at peak time, plus people trying to get out of the 92 units and each one of those have at least a car and if not two.

“The shopping centre [at the marina] has only got its own car parks and you can’t park there full-time. Parking by the ferry is chocka. The concern most of us have got is the traffic won’t be able to cope.”

The resident says he and other

locals also oppose the large number of units as they do not think it’s in keeping with the immediate community’s character.

A spokesperson for project managers Risland NZ says the site has two existing vehicle crossings on Compass Point Way, both of which will be removed and reinstated to the kerb and berm.

“One new vehicle crossing will be established for the development, with a width of 5.5 metres, which allows for two-way traffic in and out. Plans have incorporated Auckland Council’s feedback, which didn’t support two

vehicle access points.

“The vehicle access has been assessed by a traffic engineer, who confirms the new vehicle crossing provides lines for clear sight and would have no detrimental impact on general road safety.

“The traffic assessment concludes the traffic engineering effects of the proposal can be accommodated on the road network without compromising its function, capacity, or safety.”

The development will provide two parking spaces for each of the three- and four- bedroom homes and one parking space for each of the two-bedroom homes.

“A range of high-end terrace homes is proposed, from two to four bedrooms.

“The three-bedroom homes will be approximately 130m2 and the four-bedroom homes approximately 170m2.”

The development’s resource consent application is on hold while the council awaits further information.

TRIBUTE TO SAILOR WHO DIED OFF FIJI Ning wins NZ Women’s Chess Championship

The former Bucklands Beach sailor who died following a freak yachting accident off the Fijian coast last week was an accomplished yachtsman who had circumnavigated the world.

Clive Nothling, 73, lived in Bucklands Beach for many years where he was a member of the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club before gradually moving gradually north to Gulf Harbour and then eventually to Okiato in Russell, Bay of Islands, Nothling’s son Zak told the Times

Clive Nothling was knocked unconscious when the boom of his boat, the Second Life, hit him late Sunday [September 24], one media report said.

The cruise ship Pacific Explorer diverted course to respond to the Second Life’s mayday call about 1am on Monday. The Pacific Explorer winched one person to safety and the Republic of Fiji Navy ship Saveneca saved the other survivor.

Nothling’s son Zak, who grew up in east Auckland and runs his business Renegade Fitness out of East Tamaki, said, “I completed

the trip up to Fiji with Dad and his friend Kevin [Harper who was also injured in the incident] earlier this year.

“With 50 years of sailing experience under his belt, having circumnavigated the globe and completed multiple crossings, I am profoundly grateful to have learned how to sail alongside him, and to have shared the trip up to Fiji earlier this year.

“This experience is one I will hold onto forever.

“Dad lived a full and adventurous life, accomplishing more than he could have ever dreamed of. He was content, especially when on the water, doing what he loved most.

“Our family is immensely thankful for the overwhelming support we have received during this challenging time. A special thanks to the New Zealand High Commission in Suva for going above and beyond to help us bring Dad home.

“After the rescue, ‘Second life’ was scuttled by the Fiji navy. His spirit will continue to live on through the joy, freedom and love of sailing and being on the water he passed on to me.”

WCM [Woman Candidate Master] Isabelle Ning, 14, powered her way through the field to win her first New Zealand Women’s Chess Championship title in Auckland with a score of 6.5/7.

The tournament, which finished last Thursday at the Howick War Memorial Hall (previously known as the Howick Information Centre) was held as a tribute event for New Zealand WIM Sue Maroroa-Jones, a former winner of the championship, who passed away earlier this year.

After an early upset round one draw against 9-year-old rising star Olivia Li, Isabelle – who was New Zealand girls’ champion – reeled off six consecutive wins to finish one and a half points clear of her nearest rival Sarah Wanyao Sun who scored 5 points.

Third place was shared between five players on 4.5 points – Luna Xu, Emily Gan, Weiyang Yu, Jennya Charomova

and Annie Yue.

Many of these players have already been selected for the New Zealand Women’s Olympiad training squad which is preparing for next year’s Olympiad in Budapest.

The under 1300 prize was shared between Olivia Li, Sayuni Rehansi and

Turning food scraps into clean energy for Auckland’s future

The signs around Howick say the new food scrap bins will begin being rolled out around mid-October. The new green bin will arrive on the grass verge outside your property soon. What are these all about?

Your apple cores and stale bread are a valuable resource, and taking climate action can now be as easy as putting these rukenga kai (food scraps) into a separate bin.

Auckland Council’s new food scraps collection service is turning waste into renewable energy and liquid fertiliser.

Your food scraps will be collected from your kerbside and taken to the Ecogas processing facility in the centre of the North Island.

This facility, the first of its kind in New Zealand, is where Ecogas will transform your food scraps into liquid fertiliser and biogas, which in turn will help to grow more food on farms and in glasshouses.

“Diverting food scraps from landfill will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and put previously wasted nutrients back into soil,” says Elise O’Brien, senior organic waste specialist and project manager at Auckland Council.

The council expects to collect nearly 40,000 tonnes of food scraps in the first year – equal to taking 10,000 medium-sized cars off the road. That’s because when food breaks down in landfill, it produces methane.

“One tonne of methane released into the atmosphere creates the same amount of global warming as 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide,” Elise explains.

Considering that Auckland currently sends 100,000 tonnes of food waste to landfill every

year, the rukenga kai (food scraps) collection service will have a huge impact if we all play our part, she explains.

It’s a chance for everyone to dispose of their food waste responsibly and help reduce both waste to landfill and emissions.

For Aucklanders, this makes acting on climate change easier. Not every household can compost food waste at home, and even if you have a composting system, not all food waste can go into it.

The new kerbside collection service complements home composting, Elise says.

“It can take things that you might not want in your home compost bin, like meat, bones, shellfish and dairy scraps. Or, if you use a worm farm, the things your worms don’t eat like onion skins and citrus peel.”

The food scraps bins go out weekly, on your council collection day. The small bins are emptied into the waste collection vehicles – some of which are electric – and the food scraps are transported to a facility in Papakura before being combined into trucks bound for Reporoa.

Dr Alzbeta Bouskova Houghton, the general manager of Ecogas, says that even this transport has been carefully thought out. The food scraps are loaded into vehicles which have delivered gravel to Auckland from Taupō, she explains. Rather than returning to Taupō

empty, now they make the trip back south carrying food scraps.

“This means we aren’t adding more trucks to the roads to make the journey.”

Once delivered to the Reporoa plant, the food scraps are fed into a machine which separates any packaging or cutlery from the food waste. “The food scraps are blended up into a thick chunky soup,” says Alzbeta.

This “soup” is then fed into large tanks, called digesters, where the food waste sits for around 70 days, allowing bacteria to break down the soup into valuable biogas and liquid fertiliser.

The whole operation has been meticulously planned to make the most of resources and location.

The Ecogas plant is ideally located for making the most of the biogas and liquid fertiliser it produces. The gas heats nearby T&G’s tomato greenhouses. This means your food scraps, which would otherwise end up being wasted and producing greenhouse gases in landfill, are being used to grow more food.

As Elise notes, you might even

end up buying tomatoes grown from the energy produced from food scraps.

Meanwhile, the liquid fertiliser is applied to nearby farms and crops in the area as a regenerative alternative to imported fertiliser. The national gas grid also passes close by the plant. Next year, Ecogas plans to inject biogas directly into the national grid.

“This is one of the most integrated biogas plants I’ve seen,” says Alzbeta.

“We are breaking new grounds on many of these [processes]. It’s a huge step towards a more circular economy for New Zealand.”

What’s more, the plant’s central location means it can absorb food scraps from other cities. The plan is to scale up to processing 75,000 tonnes annually as part of wider Government actions to address the 350,000 tonnes of food waste going to landfills nationwide each year.

The idea to use anaerobic digestion at scale has been in the works for around seven years, so the rollout of the food scraps collection service is a landmark for Auckland’s action on climate. Alzbeta couldn’t be more excited to see Aucklanders get onboard with food scraps collection.

“Our whole premise has been based on the idea of closing the food and energy loops for a sustainable future, and we are inching towards that goal one truck load at a time.”

Tyler talks [food] trash and why it’s important

My son Tyler Crook has given a talk to his class at Wakaaranga Primary School about the new food scraps bins about to come to east Auckland.

He was surprised to learn that a survey of Auckland residential rubbish contained about 45 per cent food waste! So if we can all participate in the new scheme then we could reduce our landfill by about half.

We reached out to Beautification Trust’s local contact Charlotte Smaill who loaned us one of the bins as a prop and also gave pamphlets to hand out on the day to the Wakaaranga Enviroschool team.

‘National will govern for all New Zealanders’

The man vying to become New Zealand’s next prime minister has already cast his vote in this year’s general election.

Botany MP and National Party leader Christopher Luxon took advantage of advanced voting, which began on October 2, by voting that day at Eastview Baptist Church in Chapel Road, Dannemora.

The polling station was soon filled by members of the news media when Luxon arrived with his wife Amanda Luxon in a BMW Crown limousine just before midday.

The couple were photographed registering to cast special votes, as they live in the Epsom electorate.

They then walked to the adjacent Botany Downs Secondary College where Christopher Luxon held a press conference with reporters.

The election campaign has been thrown a curve

ball with less than a fortnight until polling day, October 14, with Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins testing positive for Covid-19 and isolating for five days.

Speaking to the news media, Luxon said New Zealand is a great country with so much potential.

“When I go up and down this country, Kiwis are say-

ing we are heading in the wrong direction. We are not realising our potential and it’s a tough time for New Zealanders at the moment.

“The cost-of-living crisis is biting hard, crime is out of control, we’ve got a failing education system, and we’ve got a health system in crisis.

“And the reality is after six years of this Labour Government, the last three with an absolute majority, it has not delivered for New Zealanders.”

Luxon said his message to Kiwis who are undecided voters, or who have never voted for National previously, is a National Government will govern for all New Zealanders.

“We are going to rebuild the economy, lower the cost-of-living crisis, make sure we restore law and order, and deliver better health and education.

“Today is a great day because advance voting is up and running and the great privilege we have in

Election an opportunity to get NZ back on track

With advance voting now open for this year’s general election, Kiwis across the country are heading to the polls to decide the future of New Zealand.

Every election is important in a democracy like ours, but many feel this is the most important we’ve had in several decades.

this country is our democracy and being able to vote.

“If you want to change the direction of this country, if you think it’s heading in the wrong direction, don’t just leave it for someone else to do, actually step up to the plate and party vote National.”

Luxon then took questions from the news media on subjects including National candidates and campaign volunteers being threatened and intimidated by gang members and which political parties he could work with in Government after the election.

He said his strong preference was for a two-party coalition Government comprised of the National and ACT parties.

Voting within New Zealand closes at 7pm on October 14.

It is hard to argue that our country hasn’t gone backwards over the last six years. By just about every statistical measure, things in New Zealand are worse than they were back in 2017.

Our economy is struggling, with a cost-of-living crisis making life difficult for all Kiwis as prices for groceries, fuel, and rent have skyrocketed.

Our health system is under pressure, with care taking far longer to get to those who need it as we face nurse and doctor shortages in the thousands.

Our educational outcomes are slipping, with far too many kids getting to high school without meeting basic literary and maths requirements.

Our transport infrastructure is slowing

us down, with poorly maintained roads and not enough new ones in the pipeline to deal with growth.

And crime is getting out of control, as criminals know they can get away with a lot worse under Labour than they could under National. Wherever you look, life in New Zealand is not nearly as good as it should be, and we all know we could be doing so much better; the good news is that help is on the way.

This election we have the opportunity to get things back on track by electing a National government with a real, aspirational plan to see New Zealand succeed. But such change cannot happen unless New Zealanders choose it. We cannot simply hope for change, we must vote for it.

More businesses come to village

Despite the slow national business environment, positive activity in Howick Village continues with commercial premises never empty for long.

Recently the Village has welcomed Expert Barbers, Growing Younger Fitness Studio, Louis & Max, Mankelow Accountants, Ray of Light Coaching and Sky Nails & Beauty.

Based on their respective social media posts, we can look forward to the openings of Despensa (a Mexican-themed restaurant) and Posto (specialising in Neapolitan style woodfire pizzas) in October. MTF Finance are also in the process of setting up shop in the Village. A very warm welcome to all these businesses and I am sure Howickians, and those from further afield,

will give these plenty of support.

The annual Howick Rotary Bookarama is being held from October 4-8. All funds raised are utilised by the club in charitable activities.

November activities planned are the Howick Village Community Wellness Expo on November 4, the East FM Vinyl sale on November 8 and the Howick Village Christmas Fair on November 17.

The investment made by the Howick Village Association in security cameras

in the Village has again proven to be worthwhile. The perpetrators of two recent incidents involving significant theft and vandalism were able to be clearly identified and that evidence handed to our local police. Whilst we would rather this be a ‘passive’ investment, it is pleasing to know that these are achieving tangible results and assisting with tangible outcomes. Let’s continue to support local!

New political party focusing on animal welfare

East Auckland voters who are keen to see New Zealand’s animal welfare standards improve have a new political movement to support at this year’s general election.

The Animal Justice Party’s policies include promoting non-animal testing methods, banning animal exploitation in entertainment, and establishing a Commissioner for Animals.

The party is standing two candidates locally at the election scheduled for October 14.

Robert McNeil, its executive president and co-founder, is campaigning in the Botany electorate, while candidate Nicholas Hancock is contesting Pakuranga.

McNeil has recently moved back to New Zealand after living in Canada.

Hancock lives in Bucklands Beach and works in pre-hospital emergency care.

“Our goal to develop a voice for animals in politics,” McNeil told the Times

“New Zealand has the highest ratio of animals to humans of any country in the world. We want to be part of the conversation and be able to speak out for animals.”

Among their party’s key policies is continuing the recently-implemented ban on the export of live farm animals from New Zealand.

The issue gained prominence in 2020 when a ship that departed Napier carrying almost 6000 animals

sank off the coast of Japan while en route to China.

The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 41 members of its crew, including two New Zealanders, and 5867 cattle. The Labour Government banned live export earlier this year, but the National and ACT parties both want it reintroduced.

“It’s a real stain on New Zealand’s reputation to see these beautiful female cows, many of them pregnant, on ships heading to the other end of the world just for profit,” McNeil says.

Hancock adds: “Once it [the ship] gets to its destination, whatever happens to those animals is out of our control. We don’t know, as far as slaughtering and breeding [what happens to the livestock].

“We’re just supplying animals to go off to who knows what. The laws in other countries are not the same as ours.”

Hancock says the party also wants the Govern-

ment to work with farmers to move away from the use of animals.

“We want to support farmers to transition to a plant-based economy. They’re growing peanuts up in Kaitaia, and pineapples, and they’re talking about growing seaweed.

“There’s the whole medicinal cannabis thing. Farmers have options to transition and the Government needs to support them to do that.”

The Animal Justice Party welcomes votes from people who care about animal welfare and are considering voting for the Green Party, which isn’t standing candidates locally.

McNeil says his party is seeking support from Kiwis who care about sustainability and the environment, or who love animals. “The Greens are in power but they compromise and we feel there’s a need for an uncompromising voice”.

Hancock concurs: “National and ACT and Labour are not talking about animals, which is what we want to bring to the table and give animals a voice.”

Armed robbers target local gaming lounge, nab cash

Police are hunting a group of armed robbers who stormed an east Auckland gaming lounge before fleeing with cash from its till.

An investigation is under way after the offenders carried out an alleged aggravated robbery at the premises in Highland Park in the early hours of September 28.

Officers were called to the Pakuranga Road gaming lounge at about 1.37 after a group armed with weapons entered the business, Nite Fun 98.

“The group have threatened at least three employees who were in the premises at the time and have taken an amount of cash from the till,” a police spokesperson says.

“The group has then left in a stolen vehicle, which police have identified as part of our enquiries.

“One of the employees has received minor injuries in relation to this incident and has received medical treatment overnight.

“We are ensuring support is in place for those who were involved.

“A scene guard has been in place overnight and will remain at the premises this morning while our investigation continues.”

The targeted gaming lounge is a short distance from 123 Palm Bar, which is the site of an

unsolved armed robbery carried out on November 21 last year.

Police said at the time a pair of offenders entered the bar at about 2.21am while other people were present.

“It’s understood two offenders entered the premises and presented what appeared to be a firearm, before stealing cash from the till and fleeing.

“While there are no serious injuries to report, those involved are understandably shaken.

“Police continue to follow positive lines of enquiry.”

A police spokesperson told the Times on September 29 the investigation into the robbery at 123 Palm Bar in November last year is “still active”.

“Enquiries into this incident remain ongoing. No arrests have been made at this stage.”

And that wasn’t the first time

123 Palm Bar had been the site of a crime involving a firearm.

A man was shot outside the bar early one morning in October 2015 during an apparent fight between rival gangs, according to police at the time.

He was shot in the leg and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

„ Police have spoken to witnesses in relation to the recent incident at Nite Fun 98 on September 28, but want anyone with new information to phone 105 or go online to www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using Update My Report, referencing file number 230928/4248.

„ Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. „ People with information on the robbery of 123 Palm Bar in Highland Park on November 21 last year and who have not yet spoken to police can phone 105, quoting file number 221121/1779, or phone Crimestoppers.

‘The Government must honour will of people’

Alocal candidate in this year’s general election wants New Zealand to end its participation in international bodies including the United Nations.

John Armstrong is representing the New Zealand Loyal political party in Botany at the election scheduled for October 14.

The party is led by former television broadcaster Liz Gunn and is campaigning on policies including introduction of a one per cent financial transaction tax.

Armstrong, who lives with his family in Shelly Park, describes the policy as a “game-changer with all income tax and GST removed, including fuel taxes”.

“This will immediately eliminate the cost-of-living crisis while raising sufficient tax revenue.

“Inland Revenue will all but be redundant. This flat-line financial transaction tax will be paid by everyone, including banks, which will significantly lighten the load on low- to middle-in-

come households.

“Small businesses would not need accountants as your tax is already paid and will be paid at every transaction.”

Armstrong says NZ Loyal wants to see New Zealand’s participation in the World Economic Forum, United Nations and World Health Organisation ended as those bodies are “unelected by the people”.

He says he has no political experience, but is an active union delegate with “extensive experience” in negotiating for $100 million-plus worker collective agreements.

“In addition I have done three years of personal study in Common Law and Contract Law.

“I have a strong moral compass and believe in family values, honour, manners and our unalienable human rights as living men and women.

“I joined NZ Loyal as their

policies are commonsense policies and align with my personal beliefs.”

Armstrong says his purpose as a candidate is to listen to the people, discuss and debate and represent them in Parliament.

Modern day politicians have forgotten who they serve, he says.

“Government must always honour the will of the people.”

He moved to New Zealand from South Africa with his wife and their two children in 2005 and is a registered industrial automation electrician specialising in high-speed process control.

Armstrong says he loved New Zealand immediately because of its beauty, people, and culture, and because “everybody had a fair go”.

He says things have worsened since then, with “rampant crime”, the cost of living crisis, and a Government that’s “forgotten its people”.

“As a South African I grew up with Apartheid and it’s not pretty. Ultimately the will of the

people forced change through a binding referendum.

“NZ Loyal will ensure we have a solid written constitution which includes our Bill of Rights.

“All mandated workers need their jobs back as well as compensation. We need to listen and treat our vaccine injured who have been ignored by all the politicians in power right now.”

Armstrong says NZ Loyal wants to repeal the Therapeutic Products Bill and the Abortion Legislation Act.

“We will also put an immedi-

ate stop to the sexual ideology and gender programmes being run in the schools, libraries and universities.

“We are a grassroots party by the people, for the people, and further believe in de-centralisation with a smaller Government, and local councils, districts or shires taking care of themselves.”

OLD MOBILE PHONES WANTED

To support the SwapKit Mobile Phone Recycling Programme, the Howick Village Association [HVA] is collecting unwanted mobile phones for this appeal.

Mobile phones can be dropped to HVA offices (behind the War Memorial Building in the Market Square) during business hours.

“International E-Waste Day

is coming up on October 14. We would like to ask businesses, organisations and the general public for their support by donating any unwanted mobile phones to help raise funds for Sustainable Coastlines and raising awareness around e-waste,” said Jane Newbury, Howick Village Association manager.

League and union’s newest rising star

At only 16-yearsold, it is hard to comprehend what Braxton SorensenMcGee has achieved as an athlete.

Whether it be being recognised as the NZ Rugby League U16 girls’ player of the year in 2022 or contributing to the Auckland Storm winning the Farah Palmer Cup competition, there’s not much she hasn’t done.

And now as the local footballer approaches her final year of schooling at Auckland Girls Grammar School (AGGS) in 2024, there is confidence that she could be the youngest ever Kiwi Fern and Black Fern double representative.

Braxton, more commonly known by her counterparts as Brax, was born into a rugby league household, with multiple members sharing the Sorensen surname representing New Zealand Rugby League on the international stage.

Her second cousin, Scott Sorensen, is the most recent in the family to pull on the New Zealand Kiwis jersey at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup and, notably also winning the NRL final on Sunday with the Penrith Panthers.

At just two-years-old Braxton was joining in on her brother’s league trainings and, as she grew up, she quickly became the tackling dummy.

She kicked off her own rugby league career as the only girl in a Howick Hornets under-seven side, where she dominated.

Growing up, Braxton was a dominant force in every rugby league team that she was a member of.

In 2022, she was a pivotal player for her AGGS team where she

was voted most valuable player in the Auckland Secondary School final for the second consecutive year.

She also was the highest points scorer for that particular Auckland competition and also the New Zealand national tournament held in Rotorua.

Braxton played a pivotal role this season for the Howick Hornets U18 girls, who went through their campaign unbeaten. She scored two of the team’s 12 tries and kicked 10 goals in their emphatic 68-20 final victory over the Otara Scorpions at Mount Smart Stadium.

To summarise, the year 12 AGGS student’s rugby league achievements in an article would not do

It wasn’t until year nine that Braxton started playing rugby union for AGGS, adding to her already busy schedule.

“She quickly became a dominant figure in schoolgirl rugby, taking the field for AGGS’s 1st XV and sevens sides.

She led her team to winning the 1st XV secondary schools girls final in 2022 and narrowly missed out on going back-to-back in 2023.

them justice.

However, she has most notably played for the Counties Manukau Stingrays, Fetu Samoa U16s, Counties Manukau Māori, Auckland Vulcans U18s, the NZSS representative side and many more. Not to mention she is constantly selected for tournament teams and recognised as the most valuable player.

Where parents sometimes find it difficult to get their kids to play outside, Braxton’s mum Nicole Sorensen says she struggles to keep her indoors.

“Sometimes we have to physically keep her away from trainings to control her workload because if she just goes to watch, she’ll end up training.

Nicole says there have been times that Braxton was training seven days a week for her multiple teams.

“If Brax could have it her way, she’d just keep training,” she says.

In 2023, Braxton was named in the wider squad for the Auckland Storm in their Farah Palmer Cup campaign, an impressive feat considering she had only ever played rugby union for her school side.

“I actually found out from another girls’ parent that she was in the squad. Brax didn’t tell me because she didn’t think she’d play considering the number of Black Ferns in the side,” says Nicole.

Sure enough, Braxton was named in the squad for their 2023 campaign.

“She was so excited because of the experience she would gain from the likes of Ruahei Demant, Katelyn Vaha’akolo and Eloise Blackwell,” Nicole says.

Unavaliable for the first game of the season due to representing Counties Manukau in league, Braxton made her Farah Palmer Cup debut off the bench against Wellington in round two.

NZ’s top polo event is back

Here comes the sunny season and with it the return of New Zealand’s most competitive and stylish polo event, the NZ Polo Open to be held at Auckland Polo Club, Clevedon, on Sunday, February 18.

“2024 is the year for the NZ Polo Open,” says Lucy Ainsley, executive director of the NZ Polo Open.

The last NZ Polo Open event was held in 2020, followed by a two-year Covid restricted hiatus and 2023 cancelled shortly prior to event due to the Auckland flooding. “Reports are for a sunny summer ahead and we are getting ready for a fantastic NZ Polo Open, one we have all been waiting for,” says Ainsley.

Under sunnier skies, the February event promises plenty of action on and off the field. International polo players and New Zealand’s top talent will compete for the prestigious trophy in fastpaced play that will feature incredible athleticism and skill of horses and their riders.

With something for everyone, the renowned polo event will be an elegant affair matched with a good fun day out. From Fashion at the Polo, Stomping the Divots, 100metre Dash’s, Horse vs Horsepower race and, for those who don’t want the day to end, an afterparty on the Chukka Lawn.

The NZ Polo Open was established in 1977 by Auckland Polo Club in Clevedon, the oldest polo club in the country. Every

“We are really looking forward to the 2024 NZ Polo Open and we are doing all we can to make it our best event yet,” says Ainsley. “See you at the Polo!”

Braxton a rising star

h Continued from page 13 She made a statement, subsequently being named as starting fullback for Auckland for the rest of the season.

Braxton played a pivotal role for the Auckland Storm, who were crowned winners of the Farah Palmer Cup in September after upsetting Canterbury.

She was also named rookie of the year for the side.

Now as she has had invaluable experience in both rugby league and union, the jury is out on what code she will choose to pursue.

“She’s always wanted to play in the NRLW but now after her season with Auckland, so many more doors have opened for her,” Nicole says.

After already turning down an offer to play rugby league in Australia, Nicole says Braxton is solely focused on finishing her schooling at AGGS.

“After that the world’s her oyster,” says Nicole.

who Braxton looks up to most, her older brother Dredin.

Dredin, also a Hornet from a young age, has had quite the league career of his own.

In 2023, he joined the Melbourne Storm feeder club, the Brisbane Tigers after initially signing with the NZ Warriors.

Nicole says the two siblings are incredibly competitive, always comparing their accolades.

“Dredin has a schoolboys Kiwis jersey and now she has a schoolgirls Kiwis jersey and they always compare what teams they have played for,” she says.

Nicole says Braxton’s long list of accomplishments at only 16 still amazes her.

“The one thing that I love the most is that she’s just so humble about it.

“She’s a great kid. She’s not the type of person to look down on people,” Nicole says.

Braxton’s character doesn’t go unnoticed, with parents and teammates constantly voicing their compliments.

“It always warms a

mother’s heart when you hear the attributes of other people telling you about your child even though you know about your child,” Nicole says.

Howick Hornets media manager Josh Garry says Braxton takes everything in her stride and is professional with everything she does, whilst remaining incredibly humble.

“You get players that are once-in-a-generation, but Braxton is a once-in-alifetime kind of talent.

“I am putting the house on her to be the youngest ever Kiwi Fern and Black Fern double representative, followed soon after by being the first duel Fern captain,” he says.

Braxton’s school and club league coach, Dave Rewi says she has continued to evolve and develop into an amazing rugby league player.

“She always plays the game with good sportsmanship and she leads her teams very well. She trains very hard and always encourages her teammates which helps to foster and build a strong team culture,” Rewi says.

Who We Are

• While it is our relationship with Christ that drives our passion to support others, we don’t discriminate. We help all people - and if we can’t we do our best to find the right people who can.

• Social Responsibility – “So I plead, imagine the earth flowered and treed, because each of us sows a seed. We give of ourselves to fill a need, we teach, we guide, we bandage knees. When we love each other in word and deed, how can we possibly help but succeed? We could change the world with staggering speed, if each of us would sow a seed.” The Lorax, Dr Suess.

• We are advocates for promoting personal dignity.

• We endeavour to be the holders of hope for those that we walk alongside until they can hold that for themselves.

• We strive to offer community connections and encourage the development of natural supports to build resiliency and promote long term change.

• We are a Christian response to the need in our community, sowing seeds of hope. Through both words and our actions, we seek to display Christ’s love so that others might know Him.

• Matthew 25:40 ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me’.

Our response to the Treaty

We acknowledge and respect the unique place that Maori have as Tangata Whenua of our land. In meeting the needs of our community, we will ensure we uphold the Treaty:

By ensuring we work in partnership with others.

• By ensuring we work towards addressing inequity so all people can participate in their community.

• By ensuring the cultural beliefs, values and practices of Maori are protected and opportunities to work with Maori practitioners and/or providers, where possible are offered.

MENTORING AND YOUTH WORK:

Our mentoring program lasts 3-6 months, with weekly check-ins to create safety plans and educational programs tailored to each individual’s needs. Our goal is to equip them with skills for the present and future.

SOCIAL WORK:

We also provide social work support to families. Common reasons for referral are domestic violence, budgeting, parenting, advocacy, information giving, and support to specialist services should this be required.

WAVES: A GRIEF EDUCATION PROGRAMME FOR ADULTS BEREAVED BY SUICIDE

WAVES helps people who have lost someone to suicide connect with others, learn about grief, manage emotions, reduce isolation, and find meaning in their experiences.

Riverina School’s journey of transformation

One of Pakuranga’s oldest primary schools is undergoing massive changes, beginning with the appointment of a new principal.

Taking the helm at the beginning of term three, Bryce Mills has wasted no time in shaping the future of the institution.

Coming from Auckland Normal Intermediate as deputy principal, Mills says he was excited by the challenge to grow Riverina School.

And that he has, with the student body increasing from 93 to 106 in just one term. He looks to continue on the path of growth with the school’s capacity to accommodate between 350

to 390 students. Mills believes in fostering a “smaller family vibe” where every student is known by name, and their families are intimately connected to the school’s community.

“I know a lot of parents are moving towards a more intimate school because they feel that sometimes their kid can

just be a number and get lost in the system.

This approach sets the school apart as it ensures that students are not just numbers lost in the system, but individuals with unique learning needs.

Riverina School, located on Millen Ave, just 100-metres from the Pakuranga Highway, has some unique offerings on the horizon.

This includes the appointment of a dedicated music specialist who will teach students how to read and understand sheet music, a rarity in primary education.

Mills is also looking to offer different languages such as French and Mandarin as Riverina looks to

become the only primary school in the area participating in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.

The school boasts impressive facilities, including a rugby field, soccer field, playgrounds, turf areas for various sports and even a solar-heated swimming pool.

Mills says the school has struggled to retain students due to the construction of the Eastern Busway on the Pakuranga Highway.

As a result, Riverina is accepting enrolments from in and out of zone students, year-round.

The school’s multiple upcoming open days in term four promise to showcase its vibrant community and amenities.

JOYCE COWAN!

CALL THE MIDWIFE: DR

Invested as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Midwifery last month, Dr (Florence) Joyce Cowan looks back on a career leading to life-saving advancements within her profession. She talks to HELEN PERRY about the joys and challenges.

Dr Joyce Cowan may have formally retired in August, but this serene, quietly spoken innovator may take some time to adjust to life without an engaging workload.

“I’m still getting my head around putting professional meetings behind me and, instead, tackling my garden,” she says with a smile. And, what a beautiful cottage garden it is although the former long-time Howickian, now living in Clevedon, admits that re-focusing is not easy – understandably so.

A leading authority on preeclampsia (previously referred to as toxaemia), Dr Cowan is co-founder and former director of the charity, NZ Action on

Pre-eclampsia (NZ APEC). She also introduced the Growth Assessment Programme (GAP) to New Zealand hospitals in 2014. Her work in both areas is considered, by most, as revolutionary.

“APEC is primarily focused on raising awareness and educating health professionals about preeclampsia whilst also supporting those with the condition and their whanau,” she says.

“It came about when a client developed severe pre-eclampsia and became dangerously ill. After she recovered, we heard about APEC in the United Kingdom and, together, we set about establishing the organisation here, never thinking it would still be going strong 30 years later.”

A TRAIL-BLAZER: MAKING AN IMPACT

Continued from page 21.

Dr Cowan says although people are generally aware of this fairly common pregnancy complication, understanding is far from complete.

“We know it affects women, usually in the second half of their pregnancy, but we don’t know why some develop it and others don’t, although there are recognised factors which increase the chance it will develop.

“It can’t be cured but mother and baby can now be monitored, and informed decisions made to plan birth for the best time. This can still be tricky if an early baby is very small.”

With APEC helping to inform pregnant women about the importance of blood pressure and other tests, Dr Cowan says this knowledge has given them some power and insight as to why a particular care approach is being undertaken.

“Of course, the ultimate achievement has been a lower perinatal mortality rate from severe preeclampsia,” she adds.

While NZ APEC has played a significant role in her life, the instigation of GAP has consumed even more of her time.

“Initially, in 2013, I attended a fetal growth conference in the USA where Professor Jason Gardosi (director of The Perinatal Institute) outlined the use of growth charts to plot the growth of the fetus in the womb.

“I then travelled to The Perinatal Institute in Birmingham to learn how to teach other midwives and doctors to use these charts with the view of bringing the GAP programme to New Zealand.”

Subsequently, GAP was first introduced to Middlemore Hospital then rolled out nationally, leading to improved detection of smaller babies during pregnancy and enabling ongoing monitoring to reduce stillbirth and to improve outcomes.

“Importantly, detection of small babies, who could potentially be stillborn, has more than doubled in most districts with stillbirths of small babies reducing. That’s a wonderful outcome but there is more

all is the joy of being at a birth –it has been called ‘the moment of starlight’. It really is something divine seeing a new baby come into the world and its life begin”.

to be done,” Dr Cowan says.

Though the two projects, plus study for her doctorate in health sciences and teaching roles, have virtually consumed her working life, Dr Cowan’s nursing pathway began in 1966 when she began training as a registered nurse at Middlemore Hospital.

“I really wanted to be a doctor and travelled to Dunedin for study after finishing my nursing training. However, I was just 21 and had recently met my husband to be [well-known photographer, John Cowan].

“Realising it would take at least another six years to qualify as a doctor, and probably putting home life and children on hold, I decided to carry on with nursing.”

Still, with a taste for greater challenges, Dr Cowan saw midwifery as a new and stimulating avenue to further her career.

“Until the 1990 introduction of the Nurses Amendment Act, midwives assisted their clients up to birthing at which point the GP was called in although, in some

WHAT IS PRE-ECLAMPSIA?

instances, the GP would arrive too late and the midwife would support the mother to give birth,” she explains.

The new Act enabled midwives to provide all maternity services from booking in early pregnancy until six weeks after a birth. This included responsibility for normal pregnancies without supervision of a medical practitioner.

These days, midwifery is a four-year, stand-alone degree, “and a significant financial commitment,” Dr Cowan says. She would love to see student midwives paid during training as they contribute to the workforce.

“Of course, training also overlaps aspects of regular nursing; a midwife needs to know how to handle many complex medical conditions which can affect pregnancy,” she says.

“The role is an exacting one. A midwife is on call 24/7 and usually has four to six clients due to give birth each month. Sometimes, she can be away from home for 24 hours and can feel pressured when more than one baby

High blood pressure, a high level of protein in the urine and, in some cases, swelling in the feet, legs and hands, are often the first signs of pre-eclampsia.

Symptoms can result in the mother developing liver or kidney problems, seizures and even a stroke. If left untreated, the condition can develop into eclampsia which can be fatal for the mother and baby during or after childbirth.

Pre-eclampsia generally appears during the latter part of the second or third trimester of pregnancy although it can occur

decides to come into the world at the same time! In such cases the support of colleagues is wonderful.”

Dr Cowan adds that the need for more midwives is pressing and acknowledges that the wage debate is ongoing.

“Yes, the role can be stressful and extremely tiring but, then, working with women

earlier. Early delivery may be recommended depending on the severity of the preeclampsia and the stage of pregnancy.

Careful monitoring and medications to lower blood pressure and manage complications are carried out before delivery.

GAP – Growth Assessment Programme: GAP is an international programme involving evidence-based care training for all maternity clinicians in the use of GROW charts to monitor a baby’s growth during pregnancy with auditing of those results.

throughout their pregnancies is so very satisfying. Providing that continuity of care often results in long-lasting friendships.

“But, best of all is the joy of being at a birth – it has been called ‘the moment of starlight’. It really is something divine seeing a new baby come into the world and its life begin”.

VINTAGE ROUND-UP

Wine columnist and connoisseur

In New Zealand white wine reigns as king and more than any other region, Marlborough has it all on its own. It’s a beat that sets the pace for the entire wine industry and home to some of the country’s most iconic brands. All the big names are here and in all of Marlborough there is one name that has grown from small beginnings to one of the largest vineyards in the county. That name is Yealands.

In little more than fifteen years, Yealands has become a household name here and across the globe emerging as one of the most successful winemakers and exporters winning numerous international awards to epitomise the brand.

The winery is state-of-the-art with stunning picturesque vistas that showcase over 1800 hectares of vines, man-made ponds, wetlands, and a plantation of 200,000 native trees and flaxes that extend all the way out to the ocean. Better still is their ultra-modern cellar door and a place where everyone will find themselves welcome.

Here are three recent vintages from my cellar that weigh-in under $30 delivering great value for money:

1.

’22 Yealands Estate Single Vineyard PGR RRP $28 a crafted blend of pinot gris, riesling and gewürztraminer that’s light, crisp, and dry with a fresh crispness that lingers on the palate. Best served with turkey breast, pasta, smoked salmon, and vegetarian dishes.

’22 Yealands Reserve pinot gris RRP $21 this keenly priced example will not disappoint. Exhibiting a bright crispness with ripe fruity flavours and a lingering freshness that is soft on the palate. Pair with seafood, fish, duck, lamb, and Asian dishes.
