Students, teachers and staff of Howick College enjoyed the sunshine and laughter with some friendly interhouse rivalry at the annual athletics day on Thursday.

Adding some buzz to the day was music pumping through the loudspeakers which had students and staff singing and dancing their hearts out as well as putting a smile on the faces of the local community.

The school had plenty of people messaging to say how much they were enjoying the playlist and the sound of happy young people having fun.

Looks like everyone welcomed a slice of normalcy in these uncertain times!

Petition: Don’t sell reserves

A

group of passionate local residents battling to stop the sale of four east Auckland public reserves have shared their message with Auckland’s mayor.

Auckland Council wants to dispose of green spaces it owns at 111R Golfland Drive, 9R Fortyfoot Lane, 76R Aberfeldy Avenue and 31 Aspiring Avenue/17R Hilltop Road.

voted late last year to retain the reserves but the council’s finance and performance committee overrode it and voted to put them up for sale.

The move is part of an effort by the council to raise money through its emergency budget.

A lengthy legal process, which involves final signoff by the Government, must be worked through before the reserves can be sold.

Among the people opposing their sale are Botany MP Christopher

Luxon, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Howick ward councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young.

A group of east Auckland residents are doing what they can to stop the reserves from being sold.

They circulated a petition signed by people from more than 450 local households calling for them to be kept in public hands.

Five of those residents recently wrote to Auckland mayor Phil Goff to highlight their concerns regarding the sale of the reserve in

Goff wrote back to them on February 22 saying revocation of the parks’ Reserves Act status is among the statutory processes that must be completed before they can be sold.

“The revocation requires public consultation, which is scheduled to commence in the near future and provide 30 days for the public to provide feedback,” Goff says.

In his letter Goff also acknowledged receipt of the residents’ petition, which was given to him by

Howick ward councillors Stewart and Young.

“I have passed this petition to the staff responsible for the management of the public consultation process so that it can be considered as formal feedback, before a final decision is made.”

A spokesperson for Conservation Minister Kiri Allan told the Times there is “quite a process” to go through before any decisions on revoking the parks’ reserve status are made. ➤ Turn to page 3

ignificant pieces of military history will be both firmly on the ground and in the skies above at this year’s Auckland Brit and Euro Classic Car Show.

More than 1200 classic vehicles are set to be displayed to the public at the annual show staged at Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga.

This year’s show was set to be held on March 7, but due to Auckland moving to Covid-19 alert level 3 it’s being postponed to Sunday April 11.

The event’s organising chairman Reverend Dr Richard Waugh says he’s delighted to publicly announce that for the first time it will feature a flyover of the park by an NZ Warbirds historic aircraft.

“NZ Warbirds will also have a display stand at the car show,” he told the Times.

“The new partnership between the NZ Warbirds and the Brit and Euro Classic Car Show is exciting.”

The link between classic vehicles and historic aircraft is a natural one for Waugh, given his 1954 Jaguar Mark VII car will feature in the show, and he serves as an aviation chaplain who has authored books

Talking to the Times three weeks after school reopened for the year, Mike Williams, principal of Pakuranga College says there are plenty of lessons to learn from lockdown.

“It’s given us more clarity about what is truly important.

Talking about pushing boundaries, Williams says that last year was incredibly difficult for some students.

“It was challenging but then

A Digital Technology department will be housed on one side at the upper level.

“We’ve agreed to be part of a project so that other schools that are going through expansion or redevelopment can come and have a look at the standardised design that saves costs.”

While the Ministry of Education has largely funded the project, the college has also contributed over $1m to the new build.

“This is a big step in our journey of the long-term property plan,” says Williams.

“Once the building is ready by mid-year, we will remove eight of the prefab structures currently serving as temporary classrooms. Once they go, it will open up the site for us.”

The spokesperson says DoC’s decision will be based on the council’s report of its assessment of those objections.

Police impound bikes after riders flee scene C

ounties Manukau Police have impounded multiple motorcycles after they were recently ridden in an unsafe manner at different locations in east and south Auckland.

Police say they’ve seen an increase of such reports, with eight bikes impounded last week in three separate incidents in the district.

Three dirt bikes and two road bikes were impounded following a report of a group of riders travelling around Musick Point in Bucklands Beach on February 21.

Some of the riders dumped their bikes in the bush when police arrived and fled on foot.

With assistance from golfers at the Howick Golf Club and members of the public, police located and seized five bikes, one of which was stolen.

Police say a youth was apprehended at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to identify the other riders involved.

There have also been numerous incidents of dirt or quad bike riders being involved in crashes.

“In general, these dirt bike riders show little regard for their own safety or the safety of those around them on the roads.

“We are continuing to see riders put themselves and other motorists in significant danger by driving recklessly, carrying out dangerous stunts and failing to wear helmets.

“We are appealing to these riders to stop putting themselves and other road users at

risk.

“It may seem like fun until one of your mates is seriously hurt.”

Lane says it’s illegal to ride a dirt bike on the road unless it’s roadworthy with a current warrant of fitness and registration.

Riding a bike with an engine capacity above 50cc requires a motorbike licence, she says.

Police are also continuing to investigate a mass ride that took place across the city, including in east Auckland, on Waitangi Day which caused “significant travel disruption”.

Officers are reviewing dozens of hours of CCTV footage of the bike ride.

Lane says 170 vehicles have been identified as taking part in the ride and police are continuing to identify those riders and vehicles involved in traffic offences with a view to taking action.

“We want to hear from family members or neighbours who can provide information about the identity of these riders and or the properties where these bikes are located.

“Police will continue to seize and impound illegal road and dirt bikes and take follow-up action against those responsible for offending.”

Weapons seized, Killer Bee nabbed Three firearms have been seized and two people, including a Killer Bees gang member, are facing firearms-related charges following search warrants in Counties Manukau on Thursday.

Officers from Counties Manukau carried out search warrants in Flat Bush and Otahuhu, Acting Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin, Counties Manukau Police said.

“The search warrants were a result of enquiries into an incident on February 6, 2020, where a bag containing a 12-gauge shotgun was recovered by police after it was observed being thrown from a vehicle onto the footpath on Flat Bush School Road,” Adkin said.

At one property police located two men who had active warrants on firearms and drug-supplying charges.

A pistol was located at the house along with more than $5000 and a quantity of meth.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of meth for supply and was due to appear in the Manukau District Court last Thursday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on numerous active charges including the supply and possession of meth.

At a second property, police located two further firearms along with ammunition.

A 25-year-old man was to appear in the Manukau District Court last Thursday to face multiple firearms-related charges as a result of the firearms located at the address on Thursday, as well as in relation to the shotgun recovered in early February.

“Police will continue to recover unlawful firearms and prevent firearms-related violence by criminal gangs and organised crime groups, as part of the nationwide Operation Tauwhiro announced last week (February 19),” Adkin said.

Submissions open for Estuary Art and Ecology Award In its 15th year now, the submissions to the Estuary Art and Ecology Award have now opened.

Artworks will be exhibited at the Malcolm Smith gallery, Uxbridge Art and Culture Centre.

Writer, curator and exhibition-maker Francis McWharrell has a tough job of judging and selecting around 20-25 artworks based on their innovative and intelligent response to ecology and the Tamaki Estuary.

McWharrell, who holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Museums and Cultural Heritage and a Master of Arts in Art History, will also select a number of other entries for display outside the main gallery.

The Estuary Art and Ecology Award have now opened.

Infrastructure neglected I

nfrastructure in New Zealand, as we all know, is at a crisis point. The issues are multi-generational and systemic.

Infrastructure as a word sounds boring to many people, but it impacts our daily lives and makes a huge impact on our economic, social and environmental wellbeing.

To illustrate that, life in Auckland has been seriously impacted by poor infrastructure over the last year.

For example, an accident on the bridge forced residents to work from home for two weeks, emergency railway line maintenance was announced the day before it commenced severely impacting commuters, the city has water restrictions due to deferred infrastructure investment, the port is failing to operate at capacity causing supply shortages, rising congestion is making the city increasingly unnavigable and many Auckland beaches were unswimmable again this summer due to poor sewerage infrastructure.

At last week’s Transport & Infrastructure Committee, I unearthed – in the discussion with NZTA – that they have advised the Minister that “further strengthening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge is no longer possible” and that “the structural integrity of the bridge is likely to require some restrictions on heavy vehicles in

the future”. This means the harbour bridge is at its limit with no ability to handle more traffic, but there is also no costed or timed plan for a second harbour crossing. There is no agreement even on whether a second crossing should be a tunnel or another bridge.

My frustration is that while we will continue to have population growth in Auckland, we have no masterplan or strategic management of the harbour crossing which is so important to both the future of Auckland and New Zealand.

Unfortunately, this poor longterm strategic planning for infra-

structure is a theme across Botany, Auckland and New Zealand. We sadly have a “band-aid and No. 8 wire” approach. That has to change if we are to build the world-class country we all want to see emerge in the 2030s and beyond.

In closing, it is extremely frustrating for all of us to be back in lockdown again. I can’t help reflect that if we had Taiwan-styled tracing technology, broad scale saliva and waste water testing and had secured the vaccine in December, like 50 other countries, and undertaken an Israeli-style vaccination programme, whereby 50 per cent

MP: Gang numbers on the rise The Government’s soft on crime approach has seen a spike in gang numbers across the Auckland region, National’s Police spokesperson and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says.

“It is time for some real action.

The Government needs to acknowledge the gang problem in Auckland and get tougher on crime.”

Figures released to National show gang numbers have grown to almost 8000 nationwide, with an 11 per cent increase in patched

members across Auckland’s three police districts in 2020 and a 36 per cent increase since the Labour Government came into office in late 2017.

“Gangs do nothing but peddle misery, inflicting violence and harm on the good people in our communities,” Mr Brown says.

“It is concerning that they are gaining such a foothold in Auckland.

“I worry that good people in our communities are becoming targets of their illegal drug trade

and other serious crimes.”

Last year, 798 people joined gangs across New Zealand, with many hundreds more potential members being prospected.

Gang membership nationwide has increased by a staggering 46 per cent under the current Government.

To combat this, Labour must deliver on its 2017 promise of 1800 new frontline police and urgently adopt National’s draft legislation to make Firearm Prohibition Orders legal so Police

have the powers they need to seize guns from gangs, Mr Brown says.

“As gang numbers continue to rise, so will the amount of serious crime and violence in our neighbourhoods, where people have a right to feel safe.

“The Government can’t continue to pretend this isn’t a problem.

“Urgent action is needed to strengthen our laws and give Police tools they need to combat gangs before it’s too late.”

t this year’s Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show – the 6th annual event – a big crowd is expected to support the work done by nearly 100 car clubs/ organisations/businesses and sponsors together with about 2000 people preparing for this highlight community event.

Always a popular free event in East Auckland, it is organised by keen volunteers who are committed to the transport heritage of New Zealand and the fascinating hobby of classic cars. Major sponsors are Howick Local Board, Times Newspapers, Protecta Insurance and NZ Classic Driver magazine.

Committee chairman Rev Dr Richard Waugh comments, “This year new features include the 60th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-Type, a ‘Goodwood’ type Revival area displaying cars with a racing and rallying pedigree. The New Zealand Army is bringing an 8-ton Scorpion tank from Waiouru which is Alvis manufactured and Jaguar XK-powered and maybe the best highlight of all will be the flypasts by New Zealand Warbirds soon after midday. est British & European-themed classic car show in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ormiston Town Centre counts down to opening T

odd Property Group has announced the official opening date of Ormiston Town Centre, with doors opening to welcome the local community on Thursday March 25.

With just four weeks to go, inside the centre tenants are busy preparing their spaces for customers and fit-out contractors are working hard to bring interior designs to life. Todd Property group development manager Sean Leonard said the core town centre offering of supermarkets, a department store, health and beauty, fashion, gyms, childcare, entertainment and food and beverage will be a welcome addition to Ormiston.

“We know that the opening of Ormiston Town Centre has been long-awaited, and needed, by this community,” said Leonard.

“Covid-19 has brought new and ongoing challenges to the retail landscape, and as a result, some retailers won’t be there on day one, but Ormiston Town Centre will evolve and grow with time.”

Tearfund mums stand tall

Tearfund and Compassion International interviewed 12 women from around the world about their experiences with Covid-19 for International Women’s Day on Monday March 8. One was from Pakuranga

s quarantine measures shut schools and day-care facilities, women often shoulder the burden of balancing work with childcare and home-schooling.

Social distancing deprives them of the support they could normally lean upon. But women are far from defeated. This International Women’s Day, Tearfund wanted to honour this strength.

They teamed up with Tearfund/ Compassion to invite 12 women, aged 18 to 91, all connected by the beauty of sponsorship, to sit for a portrait and a conversation.

In the midst of challenge, their strength is undeniable. Their resilience is inspiring. Who are these women? Take a look. They are all around us.

Pakuranga’s Bex Jeffery was a Kiwi Mum of three lively boys, living and working in Sudan in early 2020.

But when the family went into the desert for a week-long holiday to view the pyramids, they could never imagine what would happen when they re-emerged – more than 280 missed messages, countless calls, the airport closed and a world in lockdown.

Bex, 40, is an archaeologist and a teacher, as is her Canadian husband. Eric, and they have three children – Caleb (9), Micah (almost

“We’ve been living abroad for the last year and we’ve come home unexpectedly,” she said.

In honour of International Women’s Day on Monday March 8, a group of photojournalists from around the took portrait images of women and interviewed each of them about their individual experiences with Covid.

“They show us the names and faces behind the statistics and inspire connection and empathy,” a Tearfund spokesperson said.

“The photos are beautiful and the age range was 18-91 years.

The women come from across the planet all the way from Bangladesh to Burkina Faso to Canada and Ecuador and back home to good old New Zealand.

Bex explains: “Our Kiwi family was teaching and living in Sudan last year when we decided to head into the desert for a week-long holiday to view the pyramids.

“When we came back, we had over 280 missed messages, countless calls, the airport was closed and the world was in lockdown.

Covid showed us how resilient our family was.

“Now that we’re back in New Zealand, I think isolation was tough for mums because we really miss that social interaction and the simple pleasures like the chance to have coffee with a friend.

“I’m a teacher so I knew how to teach my kids at home but for all my friends that they weren’t teachers, that’s a huge task to put on parents.”

Khojaly district Khojalld is a highland district in southwest Azerbaijan. It was established on the basis of Asgaran district when the Nagorno­ Ka ra ba k h Autonomous Region was dissolved in 1991. Khojali's majestic Gizgala and Girkhgiz peaks rise over 2,800 meters above sea level. Alpine meadows, grassland and forests of oak, hazel, birch and maple cover much of the district.

History of Khojaly

Barrows and other graves dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages have been found near the town of Khojal\j. The burial mounds contained ceramic utensils, weapons, jewelrld and bronze tools from the 13th-7th centuries BCE. Two millennia later, in 1787, Ibrahim Khalil Khan built Asgaran Castle to protect the Karabakh Khanate from enemld attack. The castle is considered one of the last examples of traditional Azerbaijani fortifications.

According to data provided by the Auckland After Hours Network, overall overnight volumes to the year ending September 2020 there were roughly 2000 people per month requiring urgent care in clinics across Auckland.

For East Care overnight for the year ending September 2020, roughly 650 people per month required.

These statistics mean that East Care has been seeing approximately 33 per cent of all urgent care volume in the quarter to September 2020 (the latest data available) overnight.

Khojaly Tragedy During the night of 25-26 Februarld 1992, the Armed Forces of th Armenia, backed bid the 366 Motor-Rifle Regiment of the former Soviet Union, launched a massive attack on the town. As the residents fled across the mountains, theld came under fire from Armenian Armed Forces. The attacks were especiallld brutal.

Some people were shot in the face, others in the back of the head.

Bodies were mutilated. A total of 613 people lost their lives that night; 106 were women, 70 were elderlld people, and 63 were children. 1275 were taken hostage, while the fate of another 150 people remains unknown. Eight families were completelld wiped out; 130 children lost one parent; and 25 children lost both parents.

There are four overnight urgent care clinics in Auckland. East Care was the largest provider by patient volume (and have been since at least 2017) and the only clinic not receiving DHB funding for an overnight service.

These statistics show how important the East Care service has been for our community and the unfortunate reality that they will now be required to go to Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department, which is significantly overrun, and which put out a statement on the 15th of January requesting people not to come to the A&E Department.

“Unless someone is experiencing an emergency we advise them to visit their local GP or Accident and Medical clinic.”

This statement being ironic in that there won’t be an Accident and Medical Clinic option in east Auckland overnight.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME I want to express a huge thank you to two gentlemen who came to my aid after falling beside the disabled car park and Picton Street on Thursday morning.

An older gentleman tried to help but was unable to have the strength needed nor could my caregiver get me up from the gutter where I had fallen.

I was in pain, doubled up, screaming “Somebody help me, please” but there was no one around except the ladies from Barfoot and Thompson who were uncertain what to do.

Suddenly a Chinese man arrived and miraculously heaved me up and into my wheelchair.

I want to express my extreme gratitude for his help. (I did not get his name to thank him personally so I hope he reads this).

As a paraplegic I am totally reliant on the goodness of people like these two gentlemen and I am so grateful to them for what they did.

It is great to be part of a community which cares.

No, Simeon Brown, there is no need to alarm us.

Our lives are not driven by fear. Rreasonable people count their blessings. Our government has handled the pandemic with no tougher measures than were necessary.

I usually compare New Zealand with other countries to get a better picture: New Zealand and Singapore – as you did. I found both are indeed similar in approach to Covid-19.

PARK PATHS A DANGER Re: the parlous state of the paths in Lloyd Elsmore Park I write in support of Joan Gilchrist’s February 16 letter regarding the dreadful state of the paths in Lloyd Elsmore Park.

I contacted a Howick Local Board member on the same problem mid-last year and was directed to go to Auckland Council to seek resolution.

What appals me is that no matter where the responsibility for repair lies, no one appears to be checking the park’s maintenance on a regular basis.

Currently there is room for only one person to walk, with overgrown grass on either side and the path itself is badly cracked and broken. The system is a danger to life and limb.

I’ll bet the farm that there will be sudden interest from all concerned when someone is injured.

Community band marks 50 years T

he Manukau Concert Band with members from east and south Auckland will be celebrating 50 years of music-making.

To mark the event, the band is planning a Gala Concert in May - and seeks past members that have played with the band to join the celebrations.

First formed by the Manurewa Kiwanis Club in 1970, the band became an incorporated society in 1971 and was known as the Manurewa Kiwanis Military Band, later changing its name to the Manukau

City Band as member numbers increased.

Members of the band in the early years can recall having to attend marching practice, learning to play their instruments whilst marching at the same time not an easy feat.

Today the band has a membership of around 40 musicians, of which three joined in those formation years of the 1970s.

Band members hail from across Auckland and the band continues to be very involved in the community, playing at Anzac Day ser-

vices and performing concerts throughout the year.

Current co-president Jan Eckersley will herself mark 20 years with the band this year and says the committee is keen to hear from past members who would like to be involved.

“If they still have their instruments gathering dust in a cupboard, or they are playing with another group, we would love to hear from them,” Jan says.

“We are gathering stories and photos - and there might even be enough past members to form a tribute

band,” she laughs.

However, you don’t have to be playing to join in the celebrations. Anyone that has been involved or played with the band over the last 50 years is encouraged to contact the band via email or through its Facebook page.

HOWICK LITTLE THEATRE OFFER COURSES FOCUSED ON ARTS MARKETING IN DIGITAL AGE Howick Little Theatre is offering a course to teach people how to find audiences for their creative work using the latest online and offline approaches to marketing and promotion.

The tutors are creative entrepreneur Paris Kirby and the University of Auckland’s Elisabeth Vaneveld.
