Luxon urges supporters to ‘see through the attacks’

National Party leader Christopher Luxon has accused the Labour Government of engaging in personal attacks against him because it doesn’t have a record to run on.

The Botany MP kicked off his electorate re-election campaign in front of several hundred supporters at Botany Downs Secondary College on July 23.

He rallied the party faithful with stern criticism of the current Government in advance of this year’s general election, to be held on Saturday, October 14.

Luxon became the MP for Botany at the 2020 general election following a successful eight-year term as chief executive of national carrier Air New Zealand. Luxon replaced Judith Collins as National’s leader in November 2021.

During his 30-minute speech at the Botany campaign launch, Luxon talked about the Labour Government’s track record on issues including crime, health, education, and the economy, and what National would do in those policy areas should it be elected.

He outlined New Zealand’s

many positives and its challenges, including “that we are totally, utterly, completely going in the wrong direction at the moment”.

“If we’re really honest with ourselves and take a step back, we are actually not solving the problems we have and we’re not maximising the opportunities in front of us. That’s why I came to politics two and a half years ago.

“I’m used to solving problems, getting things sorted and getting things done, and that’s what

I want us to do together as a country, so we can realise all the potential we have.”

Luxon said Labour has mismanaged the economy “on a scale we have never seen before”.

“The Government is spending more, hiring more bureaucrats, taxing more and borrowing more.

All of that has led to inflation and to cause huge pain and suffering for the New Zealand people. Government spending is up over $1 billion per week. It’s up

80 per cent to $137 billion.”

He said people should ask if the country has seen an 80 per cent improvement in education, health, infrastructure and roading, or in crime. “The short answer is no, we have nothing to show for it, we have no improved results or outcomes.”

Luxon said National will fix the economy to reduce the cost of living crisis, tackle the underlying causes of inflation, restore law and order and personal responsibility, introduce stronger sentences for crime, and deliver “much better” healthcare and education to New Zealanders.

He said the general election is going to be close and the Labour Party “is going to go personal”.

“We can see it already and New Zealanders can see it already.

“They’ve come after me personally each and every week and try to attack us that way.

“They do that, they go personal, because they don’t have a record to run on and they don’t have the ideas they need to take the country forward and to make it better than it is.”

“So see through the noise, see through the attacks, and stay focused on the task at hand.”

National launches its $24b election transport policy

The National Party’s $24 billion ‘Transport for the Future’ infrastructure policy includes fully funding the Eastern Busway project and the construction of new major roads around the country.

Party leader Christopher Luxon joined Pakuranga MP and National’s transport spokesperson Simeon Brown to unveil the policy on July 31.

Luxon says a National Government will build key transport connections which will slash congestion, unlock housing growth, boost productivity and lift incomes.

“National’s vision is for New Zealand to become one of the world’s leading small advanced economies, and our transport plan will help drive prosperity and lift the standard of living for all New Zealanders.

“With National’s Transport for the Future plan in place, New Zealanders will be able to get where they want to go faster and spend less time in their cars and

more time doing what they love.

“Freight will also move more efficiently around the country, improving productivity.”

The policy features the delivery of 13 new roads of national significance, including stage one of Mill Road in south-east Auckland.

Luxon says National will deliver better public transport including a rapid transit network in Auckland with transport corridors in the North West, Botany to Auckland Airport, and the full Eastern Busway.

The policy states the Eastern Busway creates separate lanes for high-frequency bus services to connect people in the eastern suburbs with the rail network in Panmure.

“The original plan was for the busway to extend all the way to Botany, but the final stage has not been funded, with the current project only funded to Burswood.

“National will complete the busway to Botany, including construction of the Reeves Road Flyover.”

The party says the Botany to Auckland Airport project will deliver a new 18km dedicated rapid transit public transport route via Manukau.

“This will connect to the Auckland rail network at Puhinui Station and will connect to the Eastern Busway at a new Botany interchange.”

Auckland needs a modern rapid transit system to increase public transport choices, unlock

housing growth, and build on the investment already made in the City Rail Link, the policy says.

“Labour has wasted the past six years talking about Light Rail but failing to deliver a single metre of track.”

Luxon says his party will rebuild regions and improve resilience with priorities to rebuild flood – and cyclone-damaged areas.

“The $24 billion Transport

WELCOME TO YOUR NEW-LOOK PAPER

Today sees the publication of our first issue of the newlook Times.

It follows a positive response to news of the changes announced last week regarding ceasing deliveries to letterboxes and instead using pick-up boxes at multiple locations in the area. We will also be merging the Howick and Pakuranga Times with sister publication, Eastlife magazine.

The harsh economic climate and post-lockdown

headwinds affecting so many small businesses has forced a dramatic strategic look at how we continue to deliver the news to our readers.

After 51 years, deliveries to letterboxes this week stop. Newspapers will now be made available at pick-up boxes at more than 70 sites in East Auckland Times Media managing director Reay Neben says the company can guarantee local news content

will remain available to all readers and continue to be “the voice of this wonderful community”.

“We are a local business based in Howick employing a team of locals to bring you local news that cannot be found anywhere else,” Neben says.

“Thanks to the continued support of our advertisers, this news is always free.

“Our local news content is in demand,” says Neben.

“The news is in print

online and Facebook. Our website times.co.nz has continued to grow with more than 85,000 visits per month.

“This is east Auckland and we are proud to be part of this exceptional area as a local and the only journal of record – of the east’s history.

“For 51 years we have been the voice of this community. With the support of our readers and our retailers, we want to continue that.”

Enjoy the new look.

for the Future package will be funded through reallocated money from the National Land Transport Fund, additional Government investment and other innovative funding tools like value capture – where developers who benefit from new infrastructure contribute to the cost, and equity finance opportunities for local and global investors.”

Brown says the party’s plan will “cut congestion, provide more low-emission transport options and create a more productive and resilient transport network that drives economic growth to boost incomes and unlock land for thousands of houses”.

“National’s vision is to provide New Zealanders with safer, faster and more reliable transport options so they can get to work, get their kids to school, and freight can move around the country more easily.”

Brown says National will scrap Labour’s Auckland Light Rail project, which is estimated to cost more than $14b.

KĀINGA ORA ‘EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED’ OVER BLAZE

Afire that broke out at a large public housing development under construction in east Auckland will delay the completion of much-needed homes for families in need.

That’s the view of Kāinga Ora regional director for central and east Auckland John Tubberty about a “suspicious” blaze in the complex in Guys Road, Huntington Park, in the early hours of July 24. He says the agency’s development on two sites will predominantly house smaller families and put a roof over children’s heads.

Kāinga Ora is “extremely disappointed” the fire is now deemed suspicious by police, Tubberty says.

“It will delay the completion of much-needed homes for families. We have been contacted by people to express their concern about the matter.

“It is still too early to know

exactly how long any delays will be. For now, that is a matter for our development partner, Gemscott, and they will advise us as soon as they are able.”

As previously reported, Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) was alerted to the fire at the building at about 5.30am.

Photos posted to social media the morning of the incident show the complex engulfed in flames.

Multiple fire trucks were still present at the scene at about 10am. Water from a fire hose atop a crane was being used to dampen the interior of the building, the steel frame of which was exposed.

Part of Guys Road was blocked to traffic as firefighters removed bent and burned steel from inside the building’s ground floor. A fire investigator was at the site also.

A member of the public at the scene said he didn’t see the blaze when he drove past the area at about 5am, but when he returned shortly after 6am the

building was alight. The man said he saw a police car nearby.

On July 25 a police spokesperson said officers are working to investigate the fire’s circumstances.

“The fire was initially reported

Hedgehogs were first brought to new Zealand by acclimatisation societies to remind settlers of their homeland, but were later introduced in greater numbers to control garden pests such as slugs, snails and grass grubs.

to police after 5.30am on Monday. We can confirm the fire is being treated as suspicious and extensive damage has occurred at the site. An initial scene examination has been conducted and further enquiries remain ongoing.”

Tubberty says the 48-home development is being built in stages and was due for completion in mid-2024.

Almost 300 east Auckland individuals and families were on the Ministry of Social Development’s housing register as of March.

“The Huntington Park development will eventually provide 48 homes for families in need of a modern, warm and dry place to call home,” he says. “It’s really sad that this fire will be forcing families to live in less than desirable conditions in the meantime.”

The Times reported in May that 640 people had signed a petition calling for a halt to the development.

The Huntington Park Residents and Ratepayers Association was considering taking legal action to try to stop it.

People with information on the fire can phone police on 105 quoting the file number 230724/0959 or phone the free and anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off line on 0800 555 111.

Mike Lee ousted from the Auckland Transport board

Councillor Mike Lee has been ousted from his seat at the Auckland Transport board by his peers.

At the Governing Body meeting on July 27, Mayor Wayne Brown proposed removing Lee from the Auckland Transport (AT) board and replacing him with Cr Chris Darby.

Lee’s removal from the board also sees changes to Lee’s responsibilities at Auckland Council.

Brown appointed him as chair to a new Regional Parks Political Working Group, deputy chair of the Appointments and Performance Committee and removed him from the newly called Revenue, Expenditure and Value Committee.

Several councillors were surprised by the move saying they only were made aware of the proposal the night before.

Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson put forward an amendment to defer the vote and give councillors a chance to discuss the appointment behind closed doors. “I am not saying the recommendation is wrong. I just know that a number of councillors have come to me and said that they were not aware of your decision and I’d like to have a discussion as a team,” Simpson said.

Cr Christine Fletcher said the proposal was an ambush and that it was unacceptable.

“This whole process has been incredibly clumsy and it’s unacceptable to me. As a council we talk about people’s mental health and being kind. This is so disrespectful,” Fletcher said.

To Brown she said “I expected better from you and I am really disgusted today.”

She said Lee had been left waiting for a month to hear whether “the court of King Wayne” was going to cut him from the board.

Cr Lotu Fuli spoke in support of Simpson’s amendment.

“I think that it will help give some time to engage in a better process and to perhaps heal some of the wounds that seem to exist because I was under a different impression coming in today,” Fuli said.

Cr Mike Lee said he had made

no attempts to lobby for the AT board position.

“I have no sense of entitlement for that role, purely to serve and and purely at the behest of yourself and the other members of the Governing Body,” Lee said.

Brown appeared taken aback by Fletcher’s comments and said “I don’t do things to purposefully upset anybody.”

“I think that ambush and disgust is probably a level of emotion slightly above the characterisation of what we are discussing,” Brown said.

He said no one had lobbied him for the role and that supporters of his budget had not been particularly rewarded.

Lee had been a vocal opponent to Brown’s proposal to sell council’s airport shares.

Simpson’s amendment was lost with eight votes in favour, ten against and one abstention from Cr Fletcher.

Lee stepped out of the room during the vote for the amendment and was not counted.

The lost amendment meant the original proposal was back on the table for councillors to vote.

Cr Ken Turner said he was looking forward to sitting on the Regional Parks Political Working Group. “Lee has the disadvantage of being so knowledgeable on so many subjects and his ability with regional parks is unsurpassed in this room,” Turner said.

Cr John Watson asked his colleagues what Lee had done so wrong to warrant his removal.

“He is brave enough to try and hold a big organisation to account. You don’t get many people that will do that,” Watson said. “It seems to be particularly objectionable, that his peers would sit around and choose to not continue to hold the confidence of that individual. Why? What has he done? I haven’t heard.”

He emphasised how kindness was being preached at council and not extended to their colleague.

The vote to replace Lee on the AT board was down the middle with two abstentions, eight votes in support and eight against. Councillors Greg Sayers, Wayne Walker, John Watson, Sharon Stewart, Maurice Williamson were among those who voted against the removal.

The vote to remove Lee was carried on Mayor Brown’s casting vote who said “democracy” after making the decision.

A member of the public shouted that it was not democracy to go against the status quo before leaving the meeting.

National gets serious on roads

National is getting serious about roads and that is good news for Botany.

On Monday, I was proud to announce a $24 billion Transport for the Future package which will be funded through reallocated money from the National Land Transport Fund, additional government investment and other innovative funding tools like value capture – where developers who benefit from new infrastructure contribute to the cost, and equity finance opportunities for local and global investors.

This includes a rapid transit network for Auckland, with public transport corridors in the North West, Airport to Botany, and completion of the Eastern Busway.

Labour has spent six years proudly opening infrastructure projects that National started in government but has done nothing itself.

Labour promised to deliver Auckland Light Rail by 2021 – but not one metre of track has been built and the costs have already blown out to $30 billion. National will stop this project to invest in our roading

projects that will deliver for all New Zealanders.

Modern infrastructure like roads, public transport networks, energy, water services, hospitals and schools are fundamental to the quality of life of all of us. National has a strong legacy of delivering key infrastructure projects from Ultra-Fast Broadband to the Waterview Tunnel, to the rebuilding of Christchurch.

It is time to future-proof New Zealand’s infrastructure. Botany has been waiting too long for projects that will get the area moving again.

With this announcement, Botany will finally get the longawaited Airport to Botany busway - and it will take a National Government to deliver it.

National’s Transport for the Future plan will:

• Deliver new Roads of Significance – including four lanes from Whangārei to Tauranga, Mill Road in Auckland, Petone to Grenada and the Cross Valley Link, Belfast to Pegasus and the Woodend Bypass north of Christchurch. We will also unlock the potential of tens of thousands of new houses in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington.

• Better Public Transport – including a rapid transit network in Auckland with transport corridors in the Northwest, Botany to the Airport and the full Eastern Busway.

• Rebuilding regions and improving resilience –including priorities for rebuilding flood and cyclone-damaged regions

like Northland, East Coast and Hawke’s Bay, and upgrades to transport infrastructure in Ashburton, Queenstown, Otago, and Southland.

With National’s Transport for the Future plan in place, New Zealanders will be able to get where they want to go faster and spend less time in their cars and more time doing what they love. Freight will also move more efficiently around the country, improving productivity.

Botany has been neglected way too long by this Labour Government and I am proud to represent a party that will make a real difference to people’s lives.

Anyone can play the guitar

“Icouldn’t possibly play guitar – I’m too old / not talented enough / no-one in my family plays / my hands are too small…”

There are many excuses for not trying, but here’s the good news. In 25-plus years of teaching many hundreds of students, I can count on one hand the people who I genuinely felt couldn’t learn guitar. Of those, one is still having lessons with us nine years later and sounding great!

Don’t you have to start really young?

You can… but you don’t have to. Maybe you’ve always wanted to play but not had the chance – the beauty of choosing to play later in life is that you have more control over your time and, with the right guidance, you can make

the most of it! Equally, if you can start young, go for it!

Surely you need to be really “talented”? In short, no.

There isn’t space here for a long explanation, but I’d recom-

mend reading the book Bounce by Matthew Syed which explores the myth of talent through examples in all disciplines, from Tiger Woods to Mozart.

So, what does it take? In my

experience, becoming a good guitar player takes three things: the right guidance and support, commitment and perseverance.

Put simply, with the right teacher and the right attitude, it is amazing what you can achieve.

Do I even need a teacher?

You might be lucky – you might just happen to find the right content online and choose to go looking for it at the right time, in the right order, and you might, by chance, practice it all correctly and make good progress.

That’s a lot of ifs! In our experience, most people make very slow and patchy progress when trying to teach themselves. Put simply, having a good teacher will help you make faster, more certain progress.

Howick Village highlights

As we progress through what has been a very wet winter (and year to date), it seems an appropriate time to remind everyone of what the Howick Village Association [HVA] and the businesses of Howick Village have been achieving to date.

Throughout the month of July, the HVA invited the public of Howick and visitors to the village to partake in their mid-winter “Shop and Win”.

Participating businesses (with signage in their windows) have been collecting customer receipts and placing them in the draw at the end of

this month to win great prizes including a wine tour for four people, on Waiheke Island, and packages to enjoy our village cafes and restaurants.

Past promotions of this nature have seen extensive support from the community with many great prizes.

The iconic Saturday morning market in Howick Village has been going from strength to strength. Saturday mornings see the village really buzzing with people out to enjoy the wide range of stallholders on display.

Be it ceramic to crepes, cheeses to chocolate, falafels to flowers, pretzels to pot plants and so much in between, you

will find it at the market.

The vibrancy of the market was truly demonstrated on July 15 when the market celebrated Bastille Day. With blue, white and red flags and bunting abundant, buskers beating out the music and stallholders getting into the tricolour spirit, it was a day to be remembered.

The market has been celebrating Bastille Day for a few years now with the intent of giving the market a distinctly French flavour for the day. We will continue to look at different themed promotions in the market for the future.

You may have noted we have a few vacant build-

ings in and around Howick Village at the moment. Unlike many other shopping precincts in Auckland, we have maintained a predominantly fully occupied business area throughout Covid lockdowns to the present.

We are working hard to assist landlords to get these vacancies occupied and maintain Howick Village as the greatest little village in New Zealand.

Your continued support for our businesses is never taken for granted and is essential in maintaining our village.

School help guitarists of all ages and levels make real progress every day of the week.

With its friendly, supportive atmosphere and an unparalleled range of opportunities for students to apply what they’re learning, the school is able to provide a unique experience for Howick guitarists from its Uxbridge Road teaching studio.

Accountant Nancy Lu chosen as National Party candidate

An east Auckland chartered accountant is standing as a List-only candidate for the National Party at this year’s general election.

Nancy Lu says as a young mother she wants her children and every Kiwi child to grow up in a New Zealand where they can truly succeed.

“I’m standing for National because it’s the only party with the ability to competently manage our economy so we can deliver more opportunities and help our young people succeed here at home. It’s only through a strong economy that New Zealand can reduce the costof-living and interest rates, lift incomes and ensure businesses can truly thrive.”

Lu attended Pakuranga Intermediate School and Macleans College after moving to New Zealand with her parents from China in 1987 when she was nine years old.

She graduated from the

University of Auckland with firstclass honours in international business and a double major in accounting with her Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Lu has recently gained a Master in Public Administration qualification from the prestig-

roles including with Auckland Council, Dashang, PwC, EY, Fonterra, and COSCO.

Lu has been actively involved in the National Party for many years and is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

FOREST AND BIRD MARKS 100 YEARS

New Zealand’s independent voice for nature, Forest and Bird is this year celebrating its centenary.

In March 1923, Captain Ernest ‘Val’ Sanderson was the inspiration for the organisation’s establishment.

To celebrate the occasion at the South Auckland Forest and Bird annual potluck dinner, three of its longest-serving members –

Barbara Garden, Win Miskelly and Graham Falla – participated in the cutting of the cake. This occasion was followed by a talk on the visit to the sub-Antarctic Islands by Sally Barclay. The branch hosts a talk on the second Monday of the month alternating between Howick and Manurewa. For further information see www.forestandbird.org. nz/branches/south-auckland

Lu is a proud mum of two young girls and lives in Auckland with her husband and family.

“I’m grateful for the support of the National Party to campaign for the party vote as a List candidate and I’ll work hard to share National’s plans to fix the econ-

omy and get our country back on track with as many people as I can before October 14,” she says.

“This is the most important election in a generation.

“I’ll be campaigning strongly

across New Zealand’s diverse communities on National’s excellent suite of policies focused on reducing the cost of living, restoring law and order and improving our schools and healthcare.”

There is much in the media currently about there being a ‘mental health crisis’ in New Zealand. This topic covers a wide range of symptoms including heightened levels of anxiety/stress and depression. It is normal to feel anxious or depressed during certain periods of your life.

To help you cope, it can be helpful to:

• find time to do activities you enjoy – eg, going for nature walks, playing sports

• stay connected with the people you care about

• talk to someone about how they are feeling, or write it down in a journal

• stick to routines if possible –for example, try to get up, go to bed, exercise, eat meals etc at your usual times

• avoid overindulging in alcohol, unhealthy food and recreational drugs

• try to limit your exposure to news and other information about the issues worrying you, perhaps sticking to small amounts of information from credible sources. You can call or text 1737 at any time to talk with a trained counsellor for free.

The 1737 Need to Talk service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you are already getting mental health treatment, try to continue with the treatment.

Tips for lifting your mental health in tough times, are on these websites: Small Steps NZ; Health Navigator; HealthEd; the Depression website has information aimed at Pasifika and Māori; Be Great; a selfhelp app called Aunty Dee, aimed at young Māori and Pasifika.

You can also contact the CAB for help in finding a local service near you and/or their free counsellor service.

Draft Local Board Plan now available

We’re excited to present our draft Local Board Plan for feedback.

We’ve spent the first half of this year out talking to locals about what’s important to them. We’ve taken your feedback, together with strategic context and expert advice, to produce a three-year strategic plan that is both aspirational and practical.

You’ll recognise some initiatives from our previous plans as we continue to build on their success. There are also initiatives that respond to new and emerging challenges and opportunities.

Feedback closes at 4pm, Monday, August 14, so make sure you have your say – https://akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt. nz/howick-local-boardplan-2023

CELEBRATING OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS

We’re fortunate to have amazing locals who volun-

teer their time to help their community. At the end of June we hosted a celebration to acknowledge more than 80 local volunteers who were nominated by their community.

They represented a diverse range of groups and organisations and we’re incredibly thankful for all the amazing work they do. Thank you to everyone who volunteers in our community!

KEEPING HOWICK KAURI KIDS OPEN

As part of the Auckland Council’s annual budget decisions, the Governing Body (Councillors and Mayor) voted to close the Kauri Kids early childhood

education centres, unless Local Boards covered the costs.

The Howick Local Board voted to fund our local Kauri Kids at the Howick Leisure Centre until June 2024, acknowledging that this is a very popular centre that provides more than the relatively small cost to keep it open.

This decision provides certainty for both staff and whānau, while providing us time to explore options. We’ve asked staff to identify alternative providers to deliver a similar service, utilising a model which aligns with the Kauri Kids values.

WORKS

WHY YOU SHOULD ADVERTISE DURING A DOWNTURN...

As we come to terms with an economy in recession, advertising can seem like the last thing on your mind. But it can be money well spent.

During a downturn the uncertainty will, understandably, make us avoid unnecessary spending and extra expenses. But there are advantages to be had when you continue to advertise. Studies during previous unstable global periods have proven this.

By advertising when others are holding

Rents increase in eastern suburbs

Quarterly insights from real estate agency Barfoot & Thompson show the average weekly rent for a home in Auckland reached $642.28 at the end of June, up 3.37 per cent or $20.95 on the same time last year.

However data shows bigger significant increases in the east –including Beachlands, Clevedon and Kawakaka Bay.

General manager for property management, Samantha Arnold, says the change is in keeping with the pace of increases recorded over the previous two years, which ranged between 2.97 per cent and 3.35 per cent.

“Consistency has returned to Auckland’s rental market after the disruption caused by the pandemic in early 2020,” says Arnold.

“Alongside a return to more typical market conditions, we are also seeing a smoothing in the numbers over time as rental increases are restricted to once a year for existing tenancies.”

back, could gain you a competitive edge.

It sends out a message to readers that you have a strong and stable presence. This increases consumer confidence and attracts more people to your brand.

Your services will still be needed going forward so this is the right time to get your message out there.

While sales may not go through the roof just yet, it’s timely to rethink your plan and build brand awareness. When customers do spend, your business will be top of mind.

However, two very different parts of the city stood out in the data drawn from more than 17,000 rental properties across the region:

the Franklin/rural Manukau area with a 6.59 per cent rise in its average weekly rent; and the city centre with a 5.86 per cent rise.

“These areas have clearly been a driving force behind this quarter’s increase,” says Arnold.

The Franklin and rural Manukau area has seen higher than typical price increases since mid-2022 and is likely in a cycle of adjusting to increasing demand.

“This is a broad area of more rural suburbs either side of the Southern Motorway including Beachlands, Clevedon and Kawakaka Bay to the east and Karaka, Pukekohe and Waiuku to the west, so there will be many factors at play,” says Arnold.

“On average, it’s the most affordable area to rent in Auckland, second only to central city apartments.

“It’s also a fast-growing area, with busy pockets of residential and commercial development attracting more people to live and work there.

“A larger proportion of new build properties could also be contributing to the rise and, at the same time, we are seeing

a slight dip in the number of homes available for rent which could be putting pressure on new tenancy pricing.”

In the city centre, the apartment market only regained its strength last quarter as workers, students and tourists returned at scale following the pandemic.

“Previously this market had been down and stagnant for several years, with price changes hovering below 1 per cent until finally rebounding to 3.46 per cent at the end of March 2023,” says Arnold.

“This quarter, it’s up a further 5.86 per cent, or $30.03 on the average weekly rent.”

City centre apartments now attract an average weekly rent of around $542.16, compared to a pre-pandemic average of $520.64 in late 2019.

The low number of rental properties available in the central city was also a factor, says Arnold.

“The recent influx of workers, students and working holidaymakers to Auckland is putting increasing pressure on already historically short supply here and we anticipate this will continue for some time,” Arnold says.

Mass shooter’s fatal injuries ‘self-inflicted’

Matu Reid died after fatally shooting two people in downtown Auckland.

An east Auckland man who carried out a mass shooting at a construction site died of self-inflicted injuries.

Matu Reid, 24, was serving a sentence of home detention in Flat Bush for domestic violence offending when he shot and killed two workers at the downtown Auckland building on July 20. He also injured multiple people during his rampage, including a police officer who the Times understands suffered an injury to his jaw.

Reid entered the commercial building on lower Queen Street armed with a pump-action shotgun shortly after 7am on July 20.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter at about 7.22am as Reid moved through the building discharging his firearm. Numerous armed officers swarmed the area. They encountered Reid in an elevator shaft in the building and exchanged gunfire with him. He was later found dead.

Police found two workers dead on the building’s lower floors. They’ve since been named as South Auckland residents Solomona Tootoo, 45, and Tupuga Sipiliano, 44.

Reid had previously admitted charges of wilful damage, male assaults female, impeding breathing, and injuring with intent to injure.

The charges stemmed from a domestic violence incident in which he kicked and strangled a woman. A bone in her neck was broken during the attack.

The crime of strangulation carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment.

Reid was sentenced at the

Auckland High Court in March to five months’ home detention, which he was to carry out at a property in Flat Bush. He was allowed as part of his sentence to work at the construction site where he carried out the shooting on July 20. Reid did not possess a firearms licence.

The Department of Corrections’ chief probation officer is carrying out a full review into Reid’s management.

In a recent update, police say they’ve completed a forensic examination of the downtown building site where the shooting took place.

“Preparation work will now get underway to ensure the site can be handed back to the construction company. Post-mortem examinations have been completed on all three people who died, including the offender.”

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but police have provided additional information about how the tragedy ended.

“The post-mortem has identified injuries inflicted when

Police are calling for people with information on the burglaries of two east Auckland eateries to come forward. The owners of Zabr’one restaurant and Books N Bricks Cafe in Bucklands Beach posted on Facebook about break-ins at the businesses on July 26.

shots were exchanged with police officers, however it has also confirmed his [Reid’s] fatal injury was self-inflicted.

“The police investigation will continue at the same time as the critical incident investigation, and a co-ordinated learning review. As standard procedure, the Independent Police Conduct Authority is also investigating.”

At the time of the update, four people injured during the incident remained in hospital.

Three workers were in a stable condition and were continuing to recover well.

“The police officer injured is also continuing to make progress in hospital, however will have a long road to recovery from injuries.”

Police want anyone with photos or videos which may be relevant to make contact. An online portal has been set up to capture these photos and video: https://tuscan.nc3.govt.nz/.

People can also provide information by phoning police on 105 or make a report online at www.police.govt.nz/use-105, using file number 230720/6744.

The post includes photos of a large glass panel in a door at Zabr’one [pictured] smashed, leaving shards of broken glass on the ground outside and inside the popular restaurant on The Parade. Another photo shows glass in the front door at Books N Bricks Cafe in Hattaway Avenue smashed also, with part of it lying on the footpath. “We feel so sad to inform you all that there has been a break in at Zabr’one and Books N Bricks,” the Facebook post says. “We are working hard to get back up and running. Stay safe everyone.”

A police spokesperson says investigations are under way into the burglaries. “The burglaries have occurred overnight between July 25 and 26 at a restaurant on The Parade and a cafe on Hattaway Avenue. Cash has been stolen from one site, while at the second site, alcohol was taken. Anyone with information should contact police on 105.”

It’s shaping up to be one of the Howick Hornets’ best seasons, with the U18 girls winning their first grand final at the weekend and the club’s top three sides off to their respective semi-finals.

U18 GIRLS

An unbeaten season and some silverware to boot! The Hornets U18 girls saved their best game for last in their grand final against the Otara Scorpions at Mount Smart Stadium.

The girls ran away with the game for an emphatic 68-20 win, scoring 12 tries, to be crowned U18 champions.

PREMIER RESERVE MEN

The first of three blockbusters at Cockle Bay’s Paparoa Park on Saturday saw the Hornets’ premier reserve men take on Mount Albert in their quarter final.

It was a huge effort for the Fox reserves who toppled Mount Albert 46-10. In the second half

they kept their visitors scoreless.

They require another massive effort this weekend as they travel to Bert Henham Park to meet the Otahuhu Leopards in their Fox Premier Reserve semi-final. They defeated Otahuhu 30-14 earlier this season.

PREMIER WOMEN

Entertaining as always, the Hornets Premier Women (‘Nets) were destined to put on a show in their last round robin match against bottom-of-the-table Manurewa Marlins.

As always, they piled on early points and didn’t take their foot off the throttle for the full 80 minutes. Nine ‘Nets tries were scored including a hattrick from star centre Cassie Ormsby.

Their victory has catapulted them to first place on the women’s premiership table at the end of round-robin. As a result, they have been crowned minor premiers for the 2023 season.

They now have home-turf advantage for their semi-final as they play host to City, who they have comprehensively beaten

twice already this season.

PREMIER MEN

To round out the dominant day for the Hornets, Paparoa Park hosted the premier men’s Fox Memorial Premiership quarter-final against the Marist Saints.

After finding themselves behind by two points with 15 minutes to go and their season on the line, the Hornets’ premier men had to dig deep.

And that they did, scoring a match winning try in the corner. The Hornets prevailed 18-10. They will go to battle in a tough one this weekend as they face the powerful Point Chevalier Pirates on the road in their Fox Memorial Premiership semi-final.

Q & A

ANGELA RUDLING

RUDLING

She’s given up her weekends for over two decades, to help her clients sell and buy their dream homes. In a free-wheeling Q & A, the award-winning real estate agent Angela Rudling talks about her biggest high, weird encounters of the first kind, and reveals the secret behind her staying power.

FROM A CAREER IN SELLING JEWELLERY TO SELLING HOMES, WHAT SPARKED THE TRANSITION?

I had two dramatic events, an unexpected end to a prestige jewellery company’s wholesale business and my mother’s health crisis at the same time, which gave me the opportunity to consider a career change to allow me more flexibility.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY AND WHAT’S THE SECRET BEHIND YOUR STAYING POWER?

Almost 25 years now, as I did my real estate course in 1998, while working part time. I went to work for ‘Edwards Real Estate’ which some locals will remember being on the corner of Wellington and Picton Streets, in Howick. Annette Edwards who was the manager alongside her husband Colin were an incredible couple who taught me the basics of the industry, which I still appreciate today. They were a great success story and were happy to share their knowledge. I though, craved the more corporate experience so after a while I was invited by another powerful local

real estate icon, Christine Fowler to join Ray White at the Bucklands Beach office. This gave me an experience second to none, learning from the best and enjoying the experience along the way.

As for my staying power, I think this is a combination of meeting and working with amazing people, having the privilege of assisting clients sell their beautiful homes, which I still thoroughly enjoy today. Every property brings a different dynamic as do the owners and their motivation for a sale.

YOUR PRIDE AND JOY?

Over the years I have had the privilege of selling exceptional properties— from the first Whitford sale I made almost 23 years ago to the recent sale of Mellons Bays most iconic waterfront property ‘Greystone’ which we closed earlier this year.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The variety, of both people and property. I love the constant changing target of the market, plus the ability to transform a well-loved home into a show piece for sale.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER SUCCESSFUL REAL

GET ON THE PROPERTY LADDER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, EITHER OUT OF AUCKLAND OR DO A JOINT SHARE OF A PROPERTY WITH A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND TO GET YOU STARTED. THERE IS NO BETTER INVESTMENT THAN PROPERTY AND THE SOONER YOU START THE SOONER YOU CAN ACCUMULATE. I WISH I HAD BEEN TAUGHT THIS AT AN EARLIER AGE MYSELF.

ESTATE AGENTS IN THE AREA?

I believe my positivity and strong work ethic. My marketing skills as I learnt from the beginning— it is difficult to sell a secret. Lastly, I am not scared to ask someone if they want to

make an offer, which is a vital question in this industry.

YOUR ADVICE TO FIRST HOME BUYERS, GIVEN

THE CURRENT SCENARIO?

Get on the property ladder as

soon as possible, either out of Auckland or do a joint share of a property with a family member or friend to get you started. There is no better investment than property and the sooner you start the sooner you can accumulate. I wish I had been taught this at an earlier age myself.

FUSION OF FLAVOURS AND ARTISTIC BRILLIANCE

The Great Iraqi Bazar held for the fourth time in Howick had people from across Auckland indulge in the rich, traditional flavours of Iraqi cuisine.

The New Zealand Iraqi Woman Cultural Society recently hosted the its annual Great Iraqi Bazar at the Fencible Lounge, Howick. Besides the gastronomic delights, the bazar offered a treasure-trove of Iraqi art, with stalls presenting an exquisite range of handcrafted mosaics, glassworks, and paintings. The artistic creations, encapsulated Iraq’s scenic

beauty and age-old traditions, as it attracted art aficionados and casual enthusiasts alike. Ensuring the guests had a taste of the famous Iraqi hospitality, the members of the New Zealand Iraqi Woman Cultural Society served all attendees complimentary Arabic coffee and dates - a traditional gesture appreciated by the many guests.

Q & A ANGELA RUDLING

Continued from page 15.

A SUCCESS STORY THAT MAKES YOU SMILE?

Many years ago, I met a wonderful couple at an open home in Pt View Drive, which still makes me smile. They so wanted to sell their Whitford property but had been told it may be difficult to sell. I asked if I could please see their property, which I did a few days later and was absolutely thrilled as it was a stunning palm lined entrance with a large one level, waterfront home with lovely views and a theatre room—well ahead of its time in the very early 2000s. These fabulous clients allowed me to market and sell their home and this began a very lovely journey for us all which has lasted almost 20 years, as they have navigated their way through several other beautiful homes in our area. It was my first sale in Whitford, and I am forever grateful of their trust as this is an area I still love and am privileged to regularly sell in today.

WHAT IS AN AVERAGE HOUSE PRICE IN THE HOWICK AREA/

WHITFORD/EASTERN BEACHES?

An average sale for our team is anything from $1.8 - $2.8m, but we specialise in above average. In Whitford the average is now $3.5 - $4.5m. And in the Eastern Beaches, recent sales have been averaging between $2.8 - $4m totally depending on the property and the position.

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING ON EVERY WEEKEND OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES?

Weekends are when the clients find it most convenient, so this is part of my life. I manage to enjoy the interaction, so it never seems like a burden, though it’s easier as we have never had the restraints of children. Our lives have revolved around weekend work for so long now I don’t remember it being any different. However, our lovely trips overseas always come as a break and now we are through Covid, and things are returning to normal for international travel, we have a few exciting trips planned over the next few years.

THE MOST BIZARRE EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD AT AN OPEN HOME?

A lovely elderly gentleman arriving in gumboots, in an old beaten-up Toyota Corolla to a large semi-rural home. He was quiet and beautifully spoken but could have been Fred Dagg’s brother! This man took us all by surprise as the next day his lawyer confirmed to me, he had recently sold many millions of dollars of Sydney waterfront property. A lesson that still makes me smile, that you can never read a book by its cover. A lesson, I always remind my team.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE POTENTIAL CONFLICTS OF INTEREST WHEN REPRESENTING BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS IN A TRANSACTION?

There is never a conflict as once a property is listed by me, my responsibility is to the vendor. It is of upmost importance; we look after the interests of our vendors especially as they pay our commission. If I know a buyer who the property will suit, it can be of assistance, as they know I will be fair, but I often joke to my clients it’s better to sell with me than buy with me, as I always want to assist the owners in getting a great price for their property.

WHICH FAMOUS PERSONALITIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO INVITE FOR DINNER AND MAKE A PITCH ABOUT SELLING THEIR HOMES?

I have always been fascinated by the actor Sam Neill and the producer Peter Jackson, but sadly to my knowledge neither of them own property within our area.

LAZY CHEF’S GUIDE TO A WINTER WARMER

Braising is one of my favourite cooking methods, says the queen of culinary bling, chef Mel Alafaci. It’s simply roasting but with a liquid partially surrounding your meat. Braising allows your tougher cuts to cook and break down over long periods of time, imparts flavour, moisture and personality to the dish. And, best of all, at the end you have a gorgeous sauce to serve as a gravy.

BRAISED PORK BELLY WITH PERFECT CRACKLING

INGREDIENTS

> 2-4 cups weak chicken or vegetable stock (depending on depth of roasting dish)

> 200-250g pork belly per person

> 1 tbsp turmeric

> 1 tbsp cumin powder or ras el hanout or curry powder

> 2 onions thickly sliced for culinary high heels!

> 2 bay leaves

> 2-star anise

> 2 tbsp dark brown/raw sugar/ coconut/palm sugar

> 2 pears thickly sliced (no need to peel!)

METHOD

To prepare the belly first ensure that you have dried the skin as much as possible. Paper towels work well.

Once the skin is dry you can even pop it under a fan to help dry the skin further.

Season the skin with salt only at the very last minute.

Place the belly into a shallow baking tray. Pour the liquid, onions, pears and spices around the pork belly, taking special care not to wet the skin. If the belly is too low in places, prop it up with the

onions and pears as high heels.

Season the skin with salt and then place in an oven of 200°C for about an hour.

After an hour, hike up the heat to about 230°C for a further 20 minutes or even turn the grill on and have the tray with the pork at the bottom of the oven so it has a long-distance relationship with the grill to crackle out the skin! Watch closely!

Once the skin is brown and crisp you can serve with a stack of gorgeous vegetables or sides of your choice!

Pork belly needs time to be perfect! There are ways to rush it, especially under the grill, but try to allow some time. If you can, once you have crackling after the cook time recommended above, hold for a further 30 minutes at 120°C making sure there is still braising liquid, and this will help tenderise thicker cuts of belly. Enjoy!
