Furious and frustrated – a bridge too far

wo Flat Bush residents are angry and fed up waiting for a much-needed safety improvements to a bridge which is regularly used by school students.

“We don’t care how they manage the funds - Emergency Budget or not - but it’s high time Auckland Council stops putting the lives of our families at risk, and upgrades the Flat Bush School Road say Flat Bush residents Norris Jajjo, a security consultant and Yuva Adhikary, a retired civil engineer of 43 years.

They are both furious and frustrated they bought expensive homes well over a million, in an area that promised basic amenities.

Adhikary who worked as a consultant with Manukau City Council moved to Flat Bush last October and is horrified by the state of Flat Bush School Road—the only connecting road to over 3000 houses that often floods up, making it a big traffic hazard.

“It poses grave danger for children crossing the road or walking to school. I feel so scared all the time, worrying if my family will get killed or injured,” he says.

“There is no value for life! We’ve paid a big sum for our homes and I am certain that every developer pays the Council a certain amount of fees for basic amenities to be setup,” says Adhikari. ➤ Turn to page 3

here have been groups of people around the world who live exceptionally long lives, says Dr Robert Bartholomew, a history teacher at Botany College who also holds a PhD in medical sociology from Queensland’s James Cook University.

Bartholomew, who is an author of several books and an honorary senior lecturer with the department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland, will talk on ‘Food for Longer Life’ as he identifies five regions of the world where people live the longest.

As part of the Well Being series kicked off by the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Association, of which Bartholomew is deputy chair, he will also share the recipe of the soup that is eaten every day by the world’s longest lived family from Sardinia.

The author will also share excerpts from his latest book No Maori Allowed – the untold story of Maori racial segregation.

Using records from the National Archives and first-hand interviews, No Maori Allowed looks at what happened at Pukekohe and the extent of racial intolerance across the country at the time - from the mid-1920s to the early 1960s, the

“They were confined to an area known as The Reservation, strategically separated from European houses where no one would lend them money or allow them to rent,” said Bartholomew.

“It is unacceptable that in the second decade of the 21st Century, many New Zealanders do not know what happened at Pukekohe and are oblivious of the extent of racial intolerance against Maori across the country during the segregation era.”

Bartholomew will share the story about the exploitation of people who were dehumanised, deemed to be expendable, and treated as second-class citizens in their own land.

Bartholomew began his career as a journalist for several New York State radio stations. Some of his published books include American Intolerance: Our Dark History of Demonizing Immigrants (with Anja Reumschüssel, 2018); A Colorful History of Popular Delusions (with Peter Hassall, 2015), and Outbreak! The Encyclopedia of Extraordinary Social Behavior (with Hilary Evans, 2009).

Residents riled over delays ➤ From page 1 The duo say they are aware that a resolution has been passed to build a temporary bridge, “But why has it taken so long?” they want to know.

It was in April last year that board chair David Collings had said that the road safety improvement project, and the bridge was a “nobrainer”.

“We have earmarked $1 million of our Transport Capital Fund as a reserve for future delivery of the project, and we will investigate using the Regional Safety Fund in June,” he said.

Jajjo a Security Consultant reckons it is a painful process calling up Auckland Council and Auckland Transport who keep passing on the buck.

“They have kids at the call centre with no idea where the road is located or what the problem is. It’s very difficult to get any answers.”

Jajjo finally made a breakthrough by connecting with higher up contacts he had at Auckland Council to stress on the major health and safety risk.

“Can you imagine the danger with kids walking on the side of the gravel road with 16- wheeler dirt trucks going back and forth at 80km an hour?” he questions.

Meanwhile Auckland Transport took heed and made it a one-way street.

They temporarily installed traffic lights and a few light barriers (at the point where the road dips) to make way for pedestrians walking the narrow path.

Flat Bush residents Norris Jajjo and Yuva Adhikary called on Sharon Stewart, Paul Young and Matthew Brajkovich to help them speed up the process of upgrading the road that poses a major risk.

“It was only a matter of time that someone was going to get seriously injured or killed on this stretch of road, so along with my neighbour Yuva we took it upon ourselves to contact the City Council to raise these concerns,” he says.

“I also discussed the issue with our neighbours, and they are worried too. After raising these issues with the Council in November and again in December, we felt that our concerns weren’t getting any traction so we raised a health and safety risk with Auckland Transport. A couple of weeks later, half the road was shut down to a single lane with traffic lights installed to direct traffic,” he says.

“We were excited as this usually meant work was forthcoming but as weeks turned into months and a few close calls with people not following the traffic rules, we decided to escalate this to Council again.

“After doing some research, we discovered that we weren’t the first to raise this road problem. It appears that a year ago this was a major issue with other people raising the same issue and funds have been allocated to this project.

“We were flabbergasted by this delay —one can only describe it as bureaucracy running amuck.”

He says that after extensive research, they discovered there were no records of any plans for a

permanent bridge.

“The original funds of $100,000 were for only a temporary solution,” he says.

“No one can explain why a temporary solution would take a year to be awarded to a contractor. We can only imagine that if a temporary bridge took 2-3 years in the pipeline – a permanent one would take 10 years to complete and possibly $3-4m of ratepayers money.”

Not willing to give up, the duo wrote to Howick Local Board members and Councillors Sharon Stewart and Paul Young to speed up the process.

“Having raised all these concerns with local Councillors, we would expect the wheels to turn faster now before what appears to be a road built for third-world conditions. Over the next two to three years this road will be used by people living in 10,000 homes that are being built really fast. ” The Times met up with the concerned residents along with Councillors Stewart, Young along with Matthew Brajkovich who could help the residents form a Ratepayers group in the Flatbush Ormiston community.

Stewart made some urgent calls to Auckland Transport traffic engineer to push for work to start immediately on a temporary walkway and the much-needed bridge extension from one side of the subdivision to the other.

“Flat Bush School Rd is a busy road with heavy trucks and excavators moving frequently. This road

at 231(FBSR) is narrow depressed.

One-way traffic lights have been in place which holds local traffic on both sides and it is very risky for pedestrians, drivers and children.

It won’t be long and someone will be killed.

“I am also very concerned about the protection barrier that is being used for children to walk to school.”

Young said he had made enquiries if the upgrading of the road would be part of the emergency budget and will get to know soon. ➤ Action points suggested by Adhikari • The currently placed inferior quality barriers should be removed and replaced by a standard road traffic barrier.

• A temporary footbridge should be provided on the side of the road and both lanes of Flat Bush School Rd should be opened to traffic asap.

The footbridge should be connected with appropriately designed footpaths on both sides. Footpaths on the eastern side should extend to the place where the developer has ended on the side of Flat Bush School Rd. • The main bridge should be built (or the existing culvert should be upgraded, whichever option is appropriate for the site).

• Alternative access should be provided to the 3,000 people (10,000 people by 2025) during the construction of the main bridge. This area becomes like an island if FBSR is blocked. There is no other entry/ exit for areas located east of the proposed bridge.

Community farewells Mat A

local identity has died suddenly in hospital. Mathew (Mat) John Bedogni, a car enthusiast well known for his beloved DeLorean and Star Wars characters at Howick’s Santa Parade, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday July 18 at Middlemore Hospital, aged 47, his death notice said.

“Adored husband of Tara and adored father of Edward and Alex.

Beloved son of John and Kenda and loved brother of Clinton (deceased).

So sadly missed by all the extended family,” it said.

“A meticulous and inspirational gentle friend to all. A funeral service to celebrate Mat’s life was held at St Columba Presbyterian Church in Botany on Friday followed by a function in Cockle Bay “to further celebrate Mat’s outstanding life”.

In online tributes his wife Tara wrote: “Mathew, my only love, my wonderful husband, my soul mate and my loving partner in all things. You were my everything. I will never forget you and you will always be in my heart, I am lost without you, your Hunny B. You will always be with me my Darling.”

a stunning diptych forged through symbiosis of science and art. Aptly named, Van der Drift’s First Quarter Moon to Full Moon was created in the bubble of lockdown and was made, in effect, by the Estuary through the action of water and reaction with its chemical compounds.

Two sheets of large format film were placed and buried deep within the drift and flow of the tides in the sediment near Otahuhu. The pollution and nutrients of surrounding industry and land-use run off mixed with organic matter and microorganisms, producing vivid alchemical reactions which, when developed, spawned two beautifully unique C-type photographs.

“I’ve just started working in the photography department at Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, looking forward to my first day with the students on Monday as they are returning for second semester then,” Van der Drift told the Times.

“It’s a great honour given there were so many entries this year,” she said.

This year’s judge was Head of Visual Arts at the Auckland University of Technology, Monique Jansen. Monique is a committed environmentalist and organic gardener; working on transforming her home and community into a model of resilience and sustainable living.

Expect the unexpected C

onsidering the unprecedented times we are living in, it’s all about expecting the unexpected.

Harlequin Musical Theatre and StageAntics will be presenting Expect the Unexpected 2.0 – a unique night of cabaret entertainment featuring a line-up of eclectic music performed by local talent on August 13.

It promises to be an evening where nothing is as expected, much like the year 2020.

“Our cast love the opportunity to collaborate and work through new and surprising ways to enter-

tain our audience. It’s been a great way to let loose those creative ideas locked away over the last few months,” says director Emma Bishop.

The original season of Expect the Unexpected in 2017 sold out, with BroadwayWorld NZ noting “the concept is not easy to do but was achieved and delivered with aplomb.”

With only three shows at Harlequin, Expect the Unexpected promises to be a great night out.

Sadly, Covid-19 pushed out all scheduled shows at Harlequin Musical Theatre for 2020. Funds

raised from this cabaret will ensure this hub of musical theatre excellence can continue to provide entertainment in the eastern suburbs.

The season runs from Thursday August 13 and there are three shows only. All tickets are $25.

he Manukau Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is serving up a ‘10-course classical degustation’ of operatic and concert masterpieces.

It will feature four soloists in an Opera Night on Saturday August 22, 7.30pm at the Vodafone Events Centre. A guest conductor with roots in Howick is also on the card.

Advance NZ launches alliance of parties greater freedom and democracy, we stand a stronger chance of uniting together and crossing the 5 per cent threshold in to Parliament.

“The only times in MMP’s history where small parties have had a realistic chance to enter parliament and bring a diversity of views to the table, has been when a sitting MP has formed a party, or where the Alliance Party brought a range of entities together.

“In the past few weeks we have met with leaders or board members of around different parties. Some are considering merging, while others are still talking with their senior per-

sonnel,” Ross said in a media release.

“Advance NZ is the new Alliance Party of the 2020s, but a centrist version of that model.”

Advance NZ is in the final stages of registration as a political party.

The merger with the NZ Public Party will see NZPP maintain their own identity and board, but stand candidates under a shared party list as Advance NZ. The leader of NZPP Billy Te Kahika will stand as a candidate in Te Tai Tokerau for NZPP, while all other candidates will stand as Advance NZ candidates.

Ross says under the Electoral Act 1993, a candidate winning a seat for one of the component parties counts towards the one seat threshold for Advance NZ’s party votes to count.

NZ Super

New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super) is a pension paid by the government to most New Zealand residents from age 65. Any eligible New Zealander receives NZ Super regardless of how much they earn through paid work, savings and investments, what other assets they own, or how much taxes they have paid.

Who can get NZ Super?

To be eligible for NZ Super, you need to be aged 65 or over and be a legal resident of New Zealand. You can get NZ Super even if you’re still working. You also need to have lived here for 10 years since age 20, with five of those years since you turned 50. Work and Income has

(usually located within Work and Income) or visit seniors. msd.govt.nz.

Living off savings and investments

tatistically we’re living much longer these days. Seeing that we could be retired for 30 years, we’re going to need money coming in. From the age of 65 most New Zealand residents receive NZ Super every fortnight. Additional retirement income above that needs to come from savings, paid work or business activity, or even our home.

Overseas pensions

If you get a pension from an overseas government, your NZ Super payments may be reduced by the amount you receive from overseas. For more information call Work and Income on 0800 552 002 and ask for the International Services office.

How much?

The level of NZ Super payments is set by the government each year. The rates are reviewed and adjusted to take into account any increases in the cost of living (inflation) and average wages. The after-tax NZ

High Tea Fridays

Super rate for couples (who both qualify) is based on 66% of the ‘average ordinary time wage’ after tax. For single people, the after-tax NZ superannuation rate is around 40 per cent of that average wage. NZ Super is paid fortnightly.

Other help

You may qualify for extra help from the government, depending on your individual situation. This could include help with ongoing health and medical costs (Disability Allowance) and housing costs (Accommodation Supplement). You may also qualify for other assistance - for example, if you face an emergency situation, or if you need help with essential costs. Many retired New Zealanders rely on income from savings in addition to their NZ Super.

This means investing money so that it generates income through interest or dividend payments. You may also plan to spend some or all of the money you have saved to help fund your retirement years.

KiwiSaver

KiwiSaver is a voluntary savings scheme designed to help New Zealanders save and invest for retirement.

If you’re under the age of 65, the extra contributions the government and your employer make to your savings mean that you would need a really good reason to not join KiwiSaver. But now that it’s also open to those 65 plus, older New Zealanders are turning to these lowercost managed funds to invest and draw down their savings.

Working in retirement No one forces us to stop working when we turn 65.

Many people may want to

continue working or to do so in a different way - such as with flexible hours, part-time or casual work, consultancy or mentoring. Income from paid work will not affect your entitlement to NZ Super.

However, it may affect your eligibility for income-tested benefits. Call Senior Services on 0800 552 002.

Equity release

The most common type of equity release is selling the house and purchasing a cheaper one that is smaller or in a cheaper area. This can free up some money while still providing the benefits of owning a home. If you own a house or other property, and need to free up some money for long-term living expenses, pay for emergencies or a major expense, you can use a ‘reverse mortgage’.

hartered accountant Wayne Bradshaw from Hastings is the new national president of Age Concern New Zealand (ACNZ).

ACNZ successfully held its first virtual annual general meeting via Zoom on Wednesday July 8.

Stephanie Clare, chief executive Age Concern New Zealand, said, “Due to Covid-19 we had to move the AGM from our normal April date and instead use an online platform. And what a success it was, we had over 50 members from up and down the country join us.” Stephanie says.

“As part of the AGM we farewell our national president Emeritus Professor Peter Oettli who stood down after eight years on the board and four years as national president. We wish Peter all the best and thank him for the unwavering dedication and support that he has given Age Concern New Zealand.

Wayne Bradshaw was elected as the new national president. Wayne is the current chair of Age Concern Havelock North and has been an ACNZ board member for the past four years. Wayne is a qualified chartered accountant and has been self-employed in various roles including the accommodation and hospitality sector, horticulture and commercial property.

Wayne is very proud that Age Concern provides both a strong and proactive national voice as well as a community focus in their work to promote the wellbeing, rights and dignity for all older people. This was especially noticeable during Covid19 when the Age Concern family stepped up and provided much needed essential services to the older people across all New Zealand.

To understand the new

environment we work in, consolidate existing partnerships, and build new relationships that ensure the Age Concern family is strong and united in achieving the best for older Kiwis, both nationally and in their local communities.

Stephen Phillips was elected to the role of national vice president.

Stephen was originally the CEO of Age Concern Canterbury and then moved on to the role of vice president of their board. He has also been a board member of Age Concern New Zealand for nearly four years. A key challenge he undertook was managing Age Concern Canterbury post the Canterbury earthquakes. Another career highlight was when he was seconded from the Christchurch City Council to the role interim manager of Canterbury Museum.

Charles Tyrrell from Age Concern Nelson Tasman has been elected as a new board member. Charles joined the board for Age Concern Nelson Tasman in 2010.

He has also previously served on the board of ACNZ as national vice president and as a board member and is delighted and privileged to serve once again. Charles is a former registered nurse (in UK) and a Anglican Priest, where he served as Dean of Nelson Cathedral until 2010 and oversaw the establishment of paid elder care workers in each of the 25 parishes in the top of the South Island. He hopes to contribute his skills as a compassionate carer and counsellor and to achieve strong relationships with members nationwide.

Robert Aitken, Mike Cohen, and Jan White remain as current ACNZ board members.

U3A: stimulating conversations and social networking

t’s changed my life, says Mike Groves about the University of the Third Age (U3A).

“It’s been my lifeline, meeting interesting people and speakers at monthly meetings. The interest groups are a great way to keep our minds active,” says the former director of operations at the University of Auckland.

Groves, the founding member and current president of U3A Ormiston, says that U3A is a movement for people in their third age. The first is childhood, the second age is about family and career, and the third age is retirement.

The idea behind people from the age of 55 onwards coming together is not only to form social connections but have stimulating conversations and learning about fascinating subjects. It’s to keep those grey cells kicking, he says.

“Besides, it has expanded my social network. So many old people are isolated and lonely and this is a

great way to meet new people and stay connected.”

What makes U3A different from other organisations is the wide spectrum of interest groups.

They range from architecture to astrophysics, armchair travel, famous and infamous, antiques and collectibles, books, walking, lunch group, NZ history group (the most popular one) and even a You can’t be Serious group.

Study groups meet in various locations including member’s homes and each group has a convenor that arranges meetings and excursions.

“We encourage our members to do research on topics they are interested in and share that knowledge with the rest of the group,” says Groves.

Mike Lowe, former president of U3A Ormiston and also founding member, says that U3A is part of a worldwide organisation. It started in France in 1973. Now there are 4000 members in Auckland with more than 25 U3A groups. ➤ Continued on page 7

rey Power is a voluntary organisation founded some 30 years ago by a group of superannuitants protesting a surcharge on New Zealand Superannuation.

The Howick Pakuranga Grey Power Association was formed in the early 1990s as the movement spread around the country, leading to the formation of the Grey Power New Zealand Federation. There are now 72 associations throughout the country, with 60,000 members. The Howick Pakuranga Association has 1100 members.

Grey Power’s major concerns today are the level of superannuation, the health system and its effect on the elderly, the escalating cost of electricity, the lack of affordable quality housing, and the welfare and care of those in rest homes.

Grey Power Howick Pakuranga offers members a discount book for local purchases, quarterly meetings with guest speakers to which the public are also invited and a quarterly newsletter outlining items of interest and information.

The Auckland Zone meets quarterly to discuss ways that may improve the wellbeing of senior Aucklanders.

We have made several submissions to Auckland Council and Auckland Transport supporting lower rates and water rates, continued free parking in Howick, the continued use of the SuperGold card for off peak travel on trains, buses and ferries, better

accessibility for seniors into buildings, fire place controls and air pollution bylaws concerning the continued use of wood burners in private homes, rates rebates for retirement village residents who qualify financially, the future viability and use of community facilities and the local alcohol policy.

We have also asked council to focus on developing Auckland as an agefriendly city, and to support a Positive Ageing Strategy.

Ms Lawry has not read my comments in their true essence as I had only given an example as to the way a systematic and disciplined way our citizens can be brought back without stress, strain and effort on our commendable facilities.

I wonder exactly how many of our citizens are still out there. Only our authorities can and should clarify.

Once a week, Russians living in NZ listen to my English lesson created in a unique way. In my lessons I explain the origin of English words and use some Zen techniques and some eidetic memory techniques.

I have been doing it for more than a year. They listen to the lessons, dialling a special number given by Spark.

Only the Russian community has this service. Any community can also organise it but they do not know about this wonderful possibility.

I would love to share my knowledge with your readers for free.

At present I am working on my new course of spoken Mandarin using my new method of teaching.

It is much easier and faster. I think it is a breakthrough in teaching Chinese.

I would like to help people in learning Mandarin. I am ready to use my knowledge for the benefit of New Zealand, my beloved new home.

I presented some of my crash courses during Chinese Language Week in September 2019. I think it would be good to create a centre of accelerated teaching of Chinese and continue my work together with other enthusiasts and put it into practice.

he Rotary ALLFIT Coastal Fun Run 10km and 5km events are two of the most spectacular run/walks you can enter in Auckland.

The 10km starts at Duder Regional Park, the 5km at Maraetai Beach and they both finish at Te Puru Park in Beachlands after traversing the spectacular Pohutukawa Coast.

The event takes place on Sunday, November 8 this year, an ideal event to train for to get that summer fitness on.

Event director Alex Garden from the Rotary Club of Pohutukawa Coast Inc (Passport Club) says, “Last year numbers were up by 44 per cent on the previous year and there is no reason why we won’t see a further big increase this year.”

Fox ties for 8th in British Masters P

rofessional golfer Ryan Fox, from Beachlands, has tied for eighth with Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell at the British Masters.

The tournament was won by Renato Paratore on Saturday for his second career victory on the European Tour after closing with a 2-under 69 containing his first bogeys of the week.

Fox shot an impressive 68 in his final round, to end the tournament 11 under after a poor start to his third round where he had bogeys at the second, third and fifth holes.

Fox returned to the UK on July

17 to re-start his European Tour.

“Been working hard the last couple of months and looking forward to some competitive golf again,” Fox said. “Enjoyed being able to spend some time at home with friends and family and I did manage to sneak a bit of fishing in too.”

Fox was pleased with his result.

“Really enjoyed being back out there this week,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Very happy with T8th first week back. Thank you to the @ europeantour for all their hard work in getting us back playing in these difficult times.”

The tournament marked the start of the European Tour’s UK Swing, six events in England and Wales over the next six weeks devised primarily for ease of travel for players amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The venues for the six events are all within a three-hour drive of one another, scrapping the need for air travel to which players have become accustomed on the increasingly global tour. Players and caddies were being tested for the coronavirus on arrival and were having to check for symptoms and take a temperature test daily.

are a testament to the success of the player programme at PURC. Hill, in particular, shone with three tries on debut, hinting at a big future for the youngster.

Local snapper wins photo award

Rapid rise for canoe S slalom athlete Canoe slalom athlete Hannah Thomas has her sights set on the 2024 Olympics.

Thomas, from Beachlands, started kayaking in the UK and competed for Great Britain before emigrating with her family to New Zealand in 2018.

Hannah’s results in 2019 gained her selection onto High Performance Sport New Zealand’s carded programme where she is supported by practitioners who support and guide her in the art of becoming an elite athlete.

She trains daily at the Vector Wero White Water Centre

in Manukau under the guidance of Canoe Slalom New Zealand coaches- as part of the High-Performance Slalom Programme.

Earlier this year she made the New Zealand senior team and the U23 team and had planned to travel to Europe in May before Covid restrictions stymied her plans.

Making the best of a bad situation, Hannah is currently working towards her long-term goal which is to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“Training is going well at the moment. I’m currently doing two to three sessions a day. I am also jug-

hona Kebble, a photographer from the Howick Photographic Society, recently won a Silver medal in a prestigious NZ landscape competition that included many international entries.

She won a silver medal in the Laurie Thomas Landscape Salon, 2020, one of the most anticipated events in New Zealand’s photographic calendar.

Since its humble beginnings 24 years ago, this salon now attracts up to 700 entries from amateur and professional photographers alike.

Shona joined the Howick Photographic Society in Auckland in 2003 wanting to learn how to make better photographs.

Since then, she has won a variety of awards in a wide variety of

genres including photojournalism, portraiture, natural history and landscapes.

Her most notable awards include gold, silver and bronze medals at the Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ) National Exhibition over the years, several supreme awards at the Royal Easter Show, PSNZ Award in the PSNZ International Salon, gold and bronze medals in the New Brighton Photojournalism Competition, awards in the North Shore Salon and the Nelson Triptych Salon, silver in the Jack Sprosen Audio Visual Competition and high placings the Tauranga Audio Visual Salon.

“As an active member of the club, she is an inspiration and mentor to all the members,” a club spokesperson said.

Electrifying local derbies enthuse Aotearoa rugby fans W

ith the Hurricanes breaking the Crusaders 36-game unbeaten streak by two points and the Blues hanging on by the skin of their teeth to defeat the bottom-placed Chiefs 21-17, Super Rugby Aotearoa is thriving.

More than 33,000 fans witnessed the hard-fought Eden Park spectacle, about 10,000 short of the new SRO opener, but still a telling acclamation for a format that embraces local derbies. Now with moves afoot to introduce a Pacific Islands team in Auckland next year embracing Fijian, Samoan and Tongan players, the competition can only get better should it come to pass. Just look at the support Tonga’s rugby league team got in recent years when defeating the Kiwis and Kangaroos before packed houses. Understandably, South Africa and Argentina won’t be happy at being discarded from Super 12 but long, arduous trips to and fro are draining on the players.

Still it’s a bit unfair for former All Black coach Steve Hansen to
