PLANNING THE “Two souls with but a single thought, two hearts that beat as one.”

Perfect

someone to bounce ideas off and will keep all parties focused.

SO NOW you are engaged and its time to start planning your big day and, frankly, there’s a lot to think about and do. For some, an experienced wedding planner will be a choice they’ll never regret.

A planner will also help couples stick to budget, reigning in costs if they look like spiralling and keeping track of when deposits and final payments should be paid.

Bridal couples often have a good idea of what they want on their wedding day and even a reasonable idea of where to go for everything so why hire a wedding planner? The reasons are endless – savings on time and cost, no fruitless running around after items that may prove unsuitable and no worrying about whether bookings have been confirmed, deposits paid or items picked up. Better still, no panic if an unexpected hitch arises and no budget blowouts but, best of all, a neutral party who can calm family tension and ensure everything runs to timetable leaving bridal couples and their families free to enjoy themselves. Wedding planner Nicky from The Celebration Studio says while brides may think they know want they want it’s often a case of, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. “Sometimes by the time a couple realises the wheels have fallen off initial plans, it is too late to change without spending a large amount of time or money.” Unfortunately, many brides don’t plan

properly and end up rushing around trying to do everything at once. “That’s when stress and emotion takes over,” says Nicky. “A good wedding planner understands the wedding process and is able to control the planning, which means the bride can slow down and enjoy the lead up to her wedding as well as the day itself. That goes for family too. There’s no way a family member should be running around telling reception caterers when to serve the starters or checking on the photographer or DJ. That’s the wedding planner’s job.” Of course, one of the most stressful elements of a wedding can be families dealing with each other and offering individual ideas about how things should be done. Normal communication and reason can go out the window. A wedding planner maintains a neutral stance, is

“Couples often fall into the trap of saying, ‘oh, it’s only an extra $50’ but do that several times and a budget blowout is sure to result,” Nicky says. “A wedding planner will make sure this doesn’t happen and often has access to items and deals couples are not be aware of. This can save a great deal of money and even when budgets are tight, compromise doesn’t have to mean giving up on dreams. It’s amazing how alternatives can turn out less expensive and just as suitable.” As the wedding day draws near the final week is always busy and last minute details need to be addressed. The last thing a bride needs is added stress. Remember, an able wedding planner will ensure everything is taken care of leaving the bride, groom and their families to manage their everyday commitments and to enjoy the excitement as it builds. Finally, everyone will head for the ceremony happy, relaxed and confident of wedding day success.

WITH THIS RING, I THEE “You don’t marry someone you can live with, you marry the person who you cannot live without.

THE HISTORY of engagement ring and wedding bands is interwoven with the custom of both rings being a rather modern idea. The ancient Greeks had betrothal rings but they were not always a pre-requisite for marriage. They were mostly seen as friendship rings. The exchange of weddings rings was first recorded nearly 5000 years ago in Egypt where they were regarded as a never-ending band of eternal love. The hole in the centre symbolised a door or gateway leading to new experiences.

However, in the USA early colonists scorned the wedding band as moral worthlessness. Instead, men gave their prospective wives a practical thimble as a token of love although on marriage many women cut out the bottom of the thimble to form a ring. In the 9th Century, Pope Nicolas 1 endorsed the idea of engagements rings by making a gold ring a betrothal requirement to demonstrate a groom’s wealth and ability to care for a wife but it wasn’t until the 14th and 15th centuries that the forerunner to today’s engagement rings emerged.

The Romans also adopted rings and a woman’s acceptance of a ring was a binding agreement meaning she was no longer available to other suitors.

Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave the first diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 and affluent royals and noblemen also began giving exquisite jewelled rings as a token of love. It was only the wealthy that could afford to do this although records show that rings made from metal, grass and twine were given as love tokens by the lower classes.

Much later, Europe saw the introduction of the Poesy Ring given to a loved one as a promise signifying love and fidelity.

Today’s engagement rings, crafted from gold and precious gems together with a second gold wedding band, have evolved more recently.

The Egyptians also believed that the fourth finger of the hand contained a special vein that led directly to the heart so it was this finger that became the official “ring finger.

RINGS COURTESY HOWICK VILLAGE JEWELLERS

Wed... Once the “will you marry me? question has been asked most couples go shop for an engagement ring, that is, if the prospective groom hasn’t bought the ring in advance. The latter is a waning custom as many women have set ideas about design, the type of stone and style.

The choice is yours Award-winning jeweller, Chris Schweder from Howick Village Jeweller says, new trends are constantly emerging and it is likely the modern bride and groom will plan their wedding rings at the same time they buy an engagement ring. “The bride will want her two rings to sit well together and will need to take into account the proportion of the ring to the size of the hand and the shape of the fingers. “Sometimes couples will compromise on practicality and have a design which exposes the attributes of the stone. With many couples now opting to have their rings individually designed and made, there is scope for the design to have personal

significance and to encompass a special interest, cultural theme or added element of romance. Chris says the classic round stone is still the most popular although the Princess cut, a square stone, which has brilliance and sparkle, has gained ground. Couples are also exploring new options such as:

engagement and wedding ring. The tendency is to make it wider, include multiple bands and possibly incorporate a number of stones.

The Ascher – a traditional emerald cut with a longer, octagonal shape and more facets for extra sparkle.

When shopping for an engagement ring, ask about clarity, colour and the grade of stones.

The Radiant – a princess cut but with hexagonal corners. The Baguette – a longer, more rectangular stone once used on either side of a main stone but now coming into its own as a central stone. Coloured stones – aquamarines, emeralds and sapphires are also popular and there is more working of metals to provide added detail to mountings. Men’s rings have become more elaborate too with inlays of alternate gold colours and texturing. Matching weddings bands are also popular. “For second time marriages, more women are opting for a single ring rather than the traditional

Two stones can be the same size and weight yet due to the difference in grade, they may be vastly different in price. “For example, an excellent quality stone could be double the price of a middling quality stone, and while the gold for wedding and engagements rings was traditionally 18 or 22 carat, today some people are opting for 9 carat gold to help reduce the overall cost. Like everything, buying the engagement and wedding rings should not be done in haste. Seek advice before making your final choice and remember there are beautiful rings to suit every budget.

UNDERCOVER

Story LINGERIE can make or break a wedding dress – visible panty lines and bulging bra straps detract from a beautiful gown but striking a balance between pretty and practical can be tricky. Prior to the wedding most brides make an effort to shape-up. Some work on general toning; others want to lose kilos but regardless of aims and achievements come the big day correct fitting underwear, combining support and comfort, will give a sleek, flattering silhouette. Purchase wedding-day lingerie before buying or having a gown made – that way fittings can be made with the selected undergarments. Aim to be at your goal weight by time you buy lingerie and are ready for bridal fittings. Choose the right bra: A sheer dress with tight bodice will require a smooth cup while a gown in heavier material means more lace detailing is acceptable. Style will dictate the appropriate support – a plunging neckline looks best with a cleavage-enhancing bra, while a torsolette is better with strapless dresses. Push up bras often suit small-busted women while fuller breasted women may require a reinforced style to enhance curves. When raising your arms no part of the bra should show and be sure you can breathe comfortably. In many cases, a bra may not be necessary as some bridal bodices are boned and fitted to give proper support. Knicker glory: Boy-leg pants come in different styles and like control-top underwear are ideal for eliminating visible panty lines or bumps. However, if control panties suck you in too much you may find bulges emerge elsewhere! Seamless knickers may do the trick or another option is the g-string but they’re not recommended under sheer dresses. Worry less about looks and more about practicality.

SOMETHING FOR “He that would the daughter win, must with the mother first begin.”

Mum

WHILE the bride will be Queen of the Day surrounded by her lovely attendants, the bevy of beauties at a wedding will also include the mothers of the bride and groom. Both will be excitedly anticipating the big day, especially when it comes to the all-important, “outfit!” Mothers of the bride and groom have the best of both worlds. While they’re not the centre of attraction, it’s certainly their day to shine as the proud parent of a beautiful daughter or a handsome son. In many cases stylish, subtle and elegant, will be the order of the day. Whether the mother opts for the fluid soft lines of chiffon or the more tailored look of Dupion Silk, the wise thing to do is check if your chosen style suits that of the wedding and that the colour will complement the bridal party. Sometimes a contrast will be called for. On other occasions it will be better to choose a neutral or pastel so as not to detract from the bride and her attendants. But this doesn’t mean drab. Depending on one’s own personal colouring, an outfit deserving of the day needs to emanate that all important factor – finesse. Two-piece ensembles remain ever popular – a dress and jacket or perhaps a two or three-piece suit never goes astray and will

also allow for changeable weather. If opting for a plain fabric then think about detailing such as hand beading or embroidery to add that exclusive or individual touch.

While wedding ceremonies are not usually the place for loud patterns or flamboyant styles that detract from that of the bride or attendants, there is a place for more casual styling, bright colours and even floral patterns. The beach or tropical island wedding may call for something quite different than that of cathedral or church ceremony. If the time of year and the location suggests the day will be hot and the temperatures high, then think cool, loose-fitting, natural fibres and an element of non-crush. But ensure quality fabric, expert cut and, once again, simplicity of style that is devoid of fussiness or is over-embellished. Obviously, mothers of the bride and groom will need to plan their outfits to suit the theme or mood of the wedding itself but that doesn’t mean compromising on the style, colour or individual flair. It may be the bride’s day but mums deserve to enjoy every moment of this special event in their lives and that of their children.

Hats went into decline around the 1970s when fashions trend became more and more casual. For a time headwear was seen only at the very occasional wedding and, perhaps, race days.

While toning or matching headwear is the recommended, contrasting can work too and black or black with a dash of colour is always safe.

But traditional brimmed hats, cocktail hats and fascinators are well and truly ‘in’ and

making a spectacular fashion statement especially at weddings. With ‘casual’ overdoing its welcome at what are essentially formal events, women have welcomed the return of headwear that adds the finishing touch to an outfit. While wide-brimmed hats are very much a presence, it is fascinators and cocktail hats that have really come to the fore – wonderful concoctions of feathers, tulle and jewels. The cocktail hat is a jaunty, mini version of the formal hat, titivating in its style and adornments.

Prior to the big day pay attention to brow shaping as well as brow and lash tinting or go all out for lash extensions. Long, lustrous eyelashes are an asset when it comes to close up photography.

Many brides aim to shed a few excess kilos, so starting a healthy eating plan, doing plenty of exercise and drinking two litres of water a day are good habits to form well before the big day.

Hands

As well as loosing weight, the benefits will include a clear complexion and a sense of wellbeing.

Hands too are vitally important especially as many photographs focus on the ring, signing of the register or the clasping of flowers. This means nails need to look manicured and painted.

Walking with friends, attending a yoga class or joining the gym are all great ways to start exercising. Alternatively for maximum results in a short period of time, why not opt for a personal trainer.

If your nails are notoriously poor, book in for a set of acrylic or gel nails. In this way there will be no hand hiding and you’ll show off your hands confidently.

Skin Acne, broken capillaries, spider veins and other skin problems can be resolved with regular visits to a beauty salon prior to the big day. Microdermabrasion will ensure skin looks polished and in tip-top condition. Regular facials and massages will keep you looking fresh and relaxed. You might even indulgle in a couple of Thai herbal treatments – the feel of steaming herbal balls being rubbed over the body is divine and provides a wonderful sense of relaxation.

LADIES ONLY SALON

Teeth Spa packages

Finally don’t forget that all-important smile. No bride wants her wedding photographs marred by stained, crooked or chipped teeth.

Many salons and day spas offer a wedding package, which includes hair and makeup consultations and trials, manicures and pedicures. Others have packages tailormade to hens’ nights, where the bride and her bridesmaids can sip champagne and eat hors d’oeuvres while being pampered from top to toe.

These days tooth whitening is an affordable and simple way to achieve sparkling teeth while other dental work may also be required to cover a chipped tooth, gaps or loss of a tooth. Consult your dentist early so that when the big day arrives your smile will be remembered for all the right reasons.

TRANSFORM YOUR HAIR FOR THAT SPECIAL DAY

Whiter, brighter smiles for your big day

EASY IN AND OUT IN JUST 5 MINUTES!

Whitening of teeth is the easiest and quickest way to enhance your smile. The procedure is best finished a few weeks before the wedding day. If you are an organised person, then the best long term results will be achieved from the take home kit chosen by your dentist, which will be right for your teeth. If you decide at the last minute to get whitening done, then in office treatment is the way to go — an hour is all it takes to get whiter and brighter teeth. A word of warning here would be appropriate. Whitening works best on natural teeth, and fillings and other dental work done on teeth will not change color. A good Scale and Polish will make a huge difference to your smile. Your gums will feel healthier and whitening will work more effectively if teeth have been professionally cleaned by a hygienist or dentist. Bad breath is usually due to infection in the gums,

AFTER E

which in most instances is relieved by a good scale and clean. If you are happy with the color of your teeth, but not the placement of teeth (as in crowding or ‘bunny teeth’), then just straightening them will make a huge difference. It may take only a few months to do the initial correction, and you could continue with the braces after the big day (yes, braces can be removed and put back again for a small additional cost). We now offer invisible braces, or braces that are attached on the inside surface of the teeth, which then are not seen (invisible aligners and lingual braces). Whitening does not last forever, but can make a huge difference to the confidence levels and for you to flash a beautiful smile. We provide orthodontic and whitening services at our centre. Hair

“A bride’s beauty lies not only in their attire but in the love radiating from their faces.”

FOREVER AFTER

EVERY bride faces the hair predicament – up, down or half and half, carefully straightened or cascading curls? Formal or informal? The bride’s dress, her hair type and the style of the wedding will all help determine the final choice. More than ever brides, their attendants and even the guests are making, ‘hair, makeup and a tan’ priorities. It seems everyone welcomes the chance to dress up and shine. When it comes to hair consider the following:

The test run Rehearse your hair, make up and tan well before the wedding day and have a friend take photos of different angles and facial expressions This will help you decide if a style best accentuates your features or, perhaps, has too much or not enough, height. Walk around with the hairstyle – is it comfortable and will it last from ceremony to the dance floor?

Stylist and salons

Up or down? Consider the time of day and type of wedding when choosing a style. Generally, loose styles are appropriate for informal or daytime weddings, while hair-ups suit a more formal evening look. The key is balance – if you’re wearing a headpiece or veil, for example, your hairstyle should complement, rather than detract, from it. High-necked dresses will look better with hair kept off the neckline. Some hairstyles add height often a bonus for shorter brides. Talk to your stylist about what will be best for the texture of your hair. Thick, coarser hair, is easy to put up, while silky or finer hair may look better with the front up and the back down.

Schedule your wedding day appointment at least 10 weeks ahead. If you want a very intricate hair-do discuss how much time will be needed on the day to accomplish the finished result.

Special occasion hair at its best Indulge in a professional cut, colour and style or fabulous hair-up for your wedding day Fun, friendly salon, experienced staff — we cater for brides, attendants, mothers-of-the-bride and groom — relax and be pampered.

Girls

“When the one man loves the one woman and the one woman loves the one man, the very angels desert heaven and come and sit in that house and sing for joy.”

NIGHT OUT

MOST women have a host of stories about hens’ night capers and risque challenges. Some brides choose to do the town, some opt for a special event such as a swank dinner, a saucy cabaret or a spa night where pampering is paramount. Some even go away for the weekend. What’s more, it’s becoming a trend for the girls and guys to meet up at the end of their stag nights and hen parties for a final, joint celebratory send-off. Yes, celebrating pending nuptials with friends has become a ‘must do’ event but there’s a lot less of the “let’s get legless” mentality and lot of more of the “let’s have a great time” approach. Planning for the hen’s part is usually left to a bridesmaid or sister. Provide her with a list of contact details for everyone you want there. Be upfront about what you want and what you don’t – this is the time to put your foot down about strippers and old flames. The classic pub crawl, complete with trailing veil and devilish horns plus a list of impossible tasks, is always fun but less conventional celebrations are just as popular.

Have a pamper party either at home with a makeup artist or beauty therapist to steer the evening. Better still head out to a spa where your can share the experience of manicures, pedicures, facials and more with refreshments on hand.

Organise a cinema night – watch chick flicks, such as The Wedding Planner, Mama Mia and Muriel’s Wedding, drink cocktails and eat popcorn. Hire a boutique cinema, use a friend’s home theatre or just hunker down in front of the plasma at home!

everyone clubbing in the city afterwards or go all-out for dinner and a saucy caberet night.

Hit the road! Plan a weekend away. Small towns such as Raglan or Waiheke Island make great getaway destinations. Book a bach and chill out or check into a hotel then explore the local cafes, pubs, vineyards and tourist attractions.

Go retro. Have everyone dress up in 70s and 80s fashion, and start the evening at home with punch and old-fashioned hors d’oevres (think cheese and pineapple on toothpicks, cheerios with tomato sauce, and prunes wrapped in bacon). Then head out for a night of tenpin bowling, mini golf, a night kayak or any other leisure activity that takes your fancy.

Throw a cocktail party. Don your most glamorous dresses, drink cosmopolitans and serve canapés. Hire a mini-van to take

A hens’ party is all good fun and will get rid of built up tension before the big day – go and enjoy!

WILL YOU BE MY

“Behind every dazzling bride is an effective crew of bridesmaids – the ladies who help the wedding loveboat sail without snags”.

Bridesmaid? LIKE many aspects of modern weddings, there are no hard and fast rules about bridesmaid’s outfits.

However, if the bridesmaids are paying for their own dresses, sensitivity towards their wishes, in terms of style, colour and cost, will go a long way.

You then need to decide if the outfits will be made by a dressmaker, bought off the rack at a bridal store or hired. These days many attendants opt to buy their gowns from a fashion boutique.

ALL GOWNS BY SUE HUNTER DESIGN

If following the traditional road of same colour and design for all bridesmaids, it’s important the colouring, body shape and size of each person is taken into consideration. These days, a popular option is for the bridesmaids to wear the same colour in varying designs.

While bridesmaids don’t need to look alike, they should present a unified look, which complements the bride.

This allows each person to highlight, or conceal, individual features. FLOWER GIRL DRESS FROM I DO BRIDAL & EVENING GOWNS

Precious GEMS

HANDCRAFTED jewellery creates a memorable impression on the wedding day. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches and tiaras can incorporate jewels, crystal beads, precious stones, pearls and shell and may be part of a very personalised theme. When brides want something unique, custom designing is a good option. However, jewellery stores and fashion boutiques today often carry exquisite dress jewellery ideal for that glamorous note or as a special thank you gift for the bridesmaids.

Some brides-to-be pay for their attendants outfits, others expect them to share the cost.

Be clear on the budget and who will be paying for what when asking relatives or friends to take part in the wedding party.

PERSONALISED

Some gowns, particularly one that is already heavily beaded, embroidered or bejewelled may call for a delicate, refined touch – nothing overwhelming. A simpler gown may require one beautiful piece to accentuate its grace.

If opting for strapless gowns, a lace throw or jacket could be added for a fuller figured bridesmaid who is conscious of baring her arms. It has also become popular for the colour of bridesmaids’ gowns to be carried through to the bride’s flowers, the men’s outfits or in decorations at the reception.

The stature of the bride or her attendants may also influence what they wear as accessories. Some may want a single, understated jewel, others might prefer something bold. Some bride’s may even opt for timehonoured pearls, borrowed from a mum or grandmother.

However while bridesmaids may all wear one colour, or if there is a large group, two colours, flower girls will often wear a paler shade and may even wear white like the bride.

The wedding day theme may also indicate an appropriate style, with casual beach weddings inspiring informal shell adornments and traditional weddings, more classical designs.

The styling will be more suited to a child – silk, satin, soft organza and tulle with subtle detailing are good for summer; velvet and lace for colder weather.

If hair is worn up, large stud or drop earrings maybe needed but if the bride is diminutive, she won’t want her accessories to look larger than life. The possibilities are endless but allow plenty of time for custom-made items.

Groom

AWAY!

GROOMS, like brides, will reap the benefits of beauty treatments in the lead-up to the big day. Men are finally realising that the advantages of looking their best and recognise that most beauty therapy salons offer a diverse range of treatments specifically designed for men. A groom and his best men can choose from the likes of facials, manicures, pedicures, body and scalp massages, bronzing treatments and hair colouring or streaking. Regular facials in the weeks before the wedding will prime the skin so it is in peak condition for the wedding. Gentle exfoliation will slough away dead skin to reveal a great complexion. Detoxifying, energising and relaxing – there’s bound to be facial to suit. A manicure the day before the big event will ensure soft, clean hands and nails. This is especially important if the groom works with his hands on a daily basis and they are callused, rough or there is grease under the nails. Remember, there will be a lot of handshaking with guests and the groom too will be required to show off his wedding band, so it pays to make a good impression. Men have their own stresses when it comes to planning a wedding. Whether it’s the financial burden of hosting such an important event or dealing with their emotions as the big day approaches, there’s nothing like a massage to easy away tension. Grooming tip: Refrain from shaving for a day or two before the wedding this will ensure both the groom and best men receive as close a shave as possible on the wedding day. Use hot towels and lotions to create smooth, soft skin – just another ticket for scrubbing up well on the big day!

WELL-

Groomed!

THANKFULLY weddings aren’t just about the bride – after all, it takes two to tango! A handsome and immaculately turned-out groom flanked by an equally well-dressed best man and groomsmen will ensure a good-looking bridal party.

“When Adam was lonely, God created for him not ten friends, but one wife.”

Just like the bride, the groom’s wedding attire will depend on the style of wedding. For example, a beach wedding in Fiji might call for a silk shirt, well-cut pants and casual leather shoes or even a more relaxed muslin look. However, suits are the most popular attire when it comes to grooms and their best men – the formality of a suit heightens the sense of occasion, and complements rather than detracts from the bridal gown. Suit-hire companies are a popular option, and can offer an extensive range, from traditional morning suits complete with dress coat and tails to the smart dinner suit with either black tie or contrasting tie. The store should have a sample of suits, waistcoats and accessories available. Before making a final selection, the groom should determine the colour being worn by the bride and bridesmaids as this may influence necktie or shirt choices. John Russell from John Russell Menswear, agents of Dress Circle Suit Hire, says grooms can count on a shop assistant to take measurements, order the selected

outfits in the right size and perform any necessary alterations. “Fathers of the bride and groom may also consider hiring their suits or ties from the same outlet,” he says. “In this way their dress is also in keeping with the overall look of the wedding.” Some less conventional approaches include wearing national dress (for example, a kilt if the groom’s family is Scottish), a white or linen pastel suit or even fancy dress for those with a strongly themed wedding. A costume hire company may be more suitable for the latter While many weddings are definitely less

formal than in the past, there are still those who would not consider anything but a morning suit and if the bride’s gown is traditional, semi-formal, or formal, then this is appropriate. If her choice is much more casual, then a smart, casual look for the groom would a better choice. Remember it is important for the groom and his merry men to fit in with the overall style of the wedding and to have the same sense of occasion. Every wedding has it’s own unique storyline and when it comes to wedding attire, the most important thing for the groom is that he looks as good as he feels when he says, “I do!”.

MAKE THE

Shoe

www.times.co.nz

A

“Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze.”

Golden

FIT

FABULOUS brides are polished from top to toe, and finer details such as a pair of beautiful shoes will add the finishing touch. Colour is an important factor – the most common choices are white or pale, neutral colours such as beige, silvery tones or even soft gold.

WITH white, ivory or cream still the most popular choice for wedding gowns most modern brides also want a golden tan to show their dress at its best.

A specialist bridal shoe shop will carry a wide selection of styles with a range of heel heights from open-toed, high-heeled sandals to fully enclosed shoes. It will also have shoes for the bridesmaids and for mothers of the bride and groom too.

Today there is no need to spend weeks building up an outdoor tan and trying to avoid sunburn along the way.

Most will stock both leather and fabric shoes which can be dyed for the perfect colour match although many will also have coloured evening shoes which may do the trick. Sometimes it is possible to buy bridal footwear from a general shoe store although elaborate styles may be limited and finding the right shade of white is not always easy. Think about heel height. You don’t want to be towering over the bridal party, or tottering down the aisle in a pair of stilettos worn for the first time. Brides are on their feet for a long time so choose shoes that are comfortable. Wedding experts recomme recommend wearing with closedstockings or pantyhose w high-heels toe shoes. If wearing h lower heeled pack a second, low reception. You pair for thee rrec ecep ec e ep may want m ma y wa w n tto nt o slip them later in the on la evening. ev SHOE FROM TROUSSEAU BRIDAL SHOES

GLOW

Tanning studios offer excellent options from state of the art sunbeds for a longer lasting tan through to quick-drying air sprays which will last for 10 to 14 days. The feared orange effect is a thing of the past in studios using top quality fake tans, many of which offer more than one colour option for different skin types. A trial run and consultation with the tanning professional will ensure that on the big day and throughout the honeymoon the bride will have a healthy glow.

Make-up perfection While most women are adept at applying makeup, when it comes to their wedding day they want perfection. The best option is a professional makeup artist who has products suitable for different skin types and in an endless array of colours. Book early. Good makeup artists are always in demand. When making your booking ask to see a portfolio of work. Also schedule a trial run in advance of the wedding day and have your accessories – jewellery, veil and other items – on hand.

Show your professional the colour of the attendants’ gowns and the colour of your flowers. These may determine the shade of lipstick, eye shadow nail polish. Ask about rates – these can vary dramatically – and ask if there is a package price for bride, bridesmaids and perhaps mothers of bride and groom too.

A make-up artist will usually come to the house so ensure you have plenty of mirrors, table and good lighting. Makeup is usually the last item to be applied. Then all that needs doing is to don your gown (there may be a few photographs too) and head for the ceremony and the man of your dreams.

GOWN WITH “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

Grace

SELECTING a stunning dress is every bride’s priority. All eyes will be on her as she walks up the aisle. In fact, this is probably the closest most women ever come to feeling like a true princess.

arrange to have them done for you. When buying off-the-rack, it may be possible to order simple changes but anything elaborate may call for a made-to-measure dress with the in-house designer.

The type of wedding planned, your figure, skin colouring, personal style and budget will all influence the choice of gown. Wedding magazines, the Internet and wedding expos will provide plenty of ideas before arranging consultations with bridal salons, designers or bridal dressmakers.

Having a dress made

Start your search early – six to eight months ahead of time. These days many dresses or bodices are imported and to ensure your chosen gown is the right size usually means orders need to be in several months ahead. Even if buying off the rack, fittings and alterations all take time.

Dressmakers specialising in bridal and evening wear can usually assist with the design and will draft the pattern too. Let them help choose the material as they will know which fabric will best suit you and the dress. They know where to shop and can often suggest ideas to add that individual flair. Cost will depend on how elaborate the dress is, the type and quantity of fabric, the number of fittings needed, and of course how long it takes to make the dress. The beauty of many dressmakers is that their appointment times are flexible.

Buying from a store

Gowns for hire

There are many specialist bridal stores where one can buy ‘off-the-rack’. Take along a friend and allow plenty of time because trying on wedding dresses can be very time-consuming. It may even pay to book, especially if you plan to shop on the weekend but remember, some salons charge a fee for trying on gowns.

Hiring a gown is a cost-effective alternative. However, before doing so ask questions such as: How often has the dress been worn? Are alterations included in the hire cost, and if so what kind? Is the dress a sample or the exact one available?

If you find something you love but which need adjustments, the sales consultant will usually take your measurements, order the dress and supply a list of alterations or

Unless you are an exact match in body type to your mother or grandmother, alterations will be necessary. Visit a trusted dressmaker and dry cleaning specialist to check if

KEEPING IT

Kiss

YOU MAY

Legal THE LAW in New Zealand states that to marry one must be at least 16 years old and if under the age 18 then parental consent is required.

“To have and to hold, to love and to cherish, from this day forward” you want to write your own words, have the celebrant help you or use something already prepared?

WHETHER exchanging vows in a garden setting or having a traditional ceremony in a church, finding the right marriage celebrant is crucial. But how do you choose the right person to be responsible for one of the most important personal and public moments of your life?

An Intention to Marry form must be filled out before obtaining the marriage licence and the Births Deaths and Marriages Office requires three working days from the time the application is lodged before the marriage licence is issued. If you have been previously married, proof of that marriage, dissolution of marriage papers or a death certificate may also need to be presented. The cost of a marriage licence is $120 or if you intend to marry in a registry office it is $170 (includes use of registry for the ceremony). The license is valid for three months from the day of issue.

A good marriage celebrant should be well resourced with examples of ceremonies and readings and be able to answer any questions you and your partner may have. Be sure you are all clear on how the ceremony should unfold. You may even want the celebrant to wear a colour or outfit in keeping with the event ensuring there is no clash of style or colour.

On this page, you’ll find a list of local celebrants in the area. Visit a few celebrants to see if there is a rapport. Look for someone you feel comfortable talking to, who listens responsively, is understanding and offers appropriate suggestions.

Ideally, he or she should be relaxed, competent and secure on the day, helping to smooth nerves and to generate a relaxed mood so that everyone enjoys formalities.

At the initial meeting, it’s helpful to everyone concerned if couples have thought about their marriage expectations, hopes and dreams. Consider whether

The law also required couples to have two witnesses at the signing of the marriage licence who are old enough to understand what they’re doing but the witnesses do not necessarily have to know the bridal couple.

ARE YOU COVERED?

Couples should also be aware that the law forbids marriage between couples if certain blood or marriage relationships exist. The Civil Union Act 2004 provides the criteria, rules and processes for two people to have their relationship officially registered in New Zealand as a civil union (by way of a formal ceremony). A Civil Union may be entered into couples of the same sex or by couples of different sexes. consultant may be informed on that aspect) and even if you are marrying close to home, it is worthwhile exploring options should the unexpected happen.

The prospect of a wedding not going ahead due to accident, illness or a natural disaster doesn’t usually cross our minds but it can happen. Fortunately wedding insurance is available but is not offered by all companies.

However, insurance planning should go beyond the big day. Couples already living together may have contents insurance and if gifts are left in the house they will, in most cases, be insured under this plan. If gifts are to be left in a reception lounge check if there is cover for theft or breakage.

covered before you go on honeymoon, get cracking and insure. Arriving home to find wedding gifts stolen or personal property rifled through and damaged is not an ideal start to married life. Newlyweds should also re-evaluate life covers. Now is the time to consider wills and any other legalities that may result from a change in marital status. Don’t put off making a will. Married or not, many couples will have acquired assets and while no one likes to think of death at such a happy time, in the event of a fatality, no wills may leave family members in a quandary.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

ARRIVE IN

Location

“It doesn’t matter where you go in life, or what you do, or how much you have, it’s who you have beside you.”

ONCE you’ve decided on that all-important date, choosing and booking a venue is one of the first steps to organising a wedding. While there are plenty of venues to choose from, the more popular will need to be booked well in advance, often up to a year, especially if you’re planning to marry on a Saturday. If your lead-in time to the wedding is short consider a midweek wedding. You may even find that rates are slightly less than on a Friday or Saturday. The type of wedding planned will usually dictate the style of reception venue. Ask yourself, will the wedding be a lavish, seated affair with set courses, a banquet with traditional seating arrangements or a mix and mingle cocktail-style celebration? While a small, classy restaurant or boutique hotel is perfect for an intimate soiree with close friends and family, large weddings are best suited to a venue specialising in wedding functions and can provide everything including menus and drinks. As many of these venues are set in beautiful landscaped grounds, couples may also decide to hold the ceremony on site where they can enjoy plenty of scope for photo opportunities. This arrangement also means guests have only one venue to drive to. Alternatively, bridal couples could always

hire a community hall or clubrooms or ‘borrow’ a friend’s gorgeous home or garden. These options will mean organising a catering firm to provide food and drink.

Today’s transportation choices are endless but if you opt for a slower means of transport – horse and carriage for instance – take into account travelling time. Calculate how long it will take to travel from the house to the ceremony and ceremony to reception. You may have to revise your thinking. If coming by helicopter be sure there is somewhere to land.

Vineyards are also popular for wedding receptions – just imagine relaxing amongst the vines with friends and family, enjoying the pairing of fine wines with your chosen cuisine. Alternatively, you may want a location with a water view – just gorgeous.

Some bridal couples now provide guest transportation, especially if the reception is some distance from guest accommodation. In such cases, chartering a bus is a sensible option. Ensure everyone is aware of pick-up and departure times and pick-up and drop off points.

Whatever you choose, ensure the venue is adequate for your guests. No matter how lovely the setting, avoid cramming. Finally, if the ceremony is to be outdoors make sure you have a back-up plan in case of rain. Fortunately, many reception venues have such a facility but some don’t, so choose wisely.

The stretch limousine remains a popular choice as do classic cars – there’s nothing quite like a Rolls Royce for feeling extra special – but if you are really seeking something different consider arriving via hot air balloon, on the back of a tractor or a bicycle built for two.

If planning to marry in a church, a nearby reception venue would be convenient. If it’s a little way out, consider hiring buses to shuttle guests to and from the venue – no drink driving, and a fun, convivial atmosphere guaranteed!

THERE was a time when the bride traditionally arrived at the church in a shiny black limousine and while this is still a popular option these days transport might be anything from helicopter to horse and cart. Some brides have even dropped into the ceremony by parachute while others have arrived by boat, vintage car or fire engine.

There are many catering firms to choose from with extensive menus covering everything from pre-dinner canapés to the latest in Pacific rim cuisine. It may also mean using a party hire company to dress the venue.

Chapel of the TALK OF THE Cherubs “Love begins in a moment, grows over time, and lasts for eternity.”

Country Wedding Venue

Town

MENTION wedding speeches and you’ll hear a variety of reactions including a few groans particularly from the men.

Distinctly different – the Chapel of Cherubs is a very special romantic Chapel nestled amongst an olive grove and vineyard with spectacular harbour views. Experience the magical atmosphere in 10 acres of picturesque photo opportunities located approx 40 mins from Auckland Central. Top quality cuisine.

Weddings from $2000

For some reason guys who can talk their heads off about the rugby, cricket or sailing are speechless on their wedding day especially when it comes to complimenting their lovely brides and confidently acknowledging family and friends. However, wedding speeches don’t need to be stomach-churning events or full of long pauses. Follow a few sensible guidelines and apprehension will turn to confidence. Firstly, consider who you are talking about. For the groom it is essential to compliment the bride and perhaps share a few special courtship moments with the guests. When acknowledging parents or other important people focus on the qualities you love best e.g. dad’s endless patience and understanding, mother’s baking and her constant care, father-in-law’s good humour or mother-in-law’s sense of fun. Have ready two or three funny/romantic/ endearing stories about those people you need to mention e.g. Mum’s always been renowned for her baking but I remember the time….

Phone/Fax 09 232 1009 Email osbchapel@xtra.co.nz www.weddingchapel.co.nz

And remember real life stories are better than tired jokes that have done the rounds. Use notes but resist the urge to write a speech in full, which is then read word for word. Rather, list a few key trigger words to remind you of points you need to mention. A ‘skeleton’ speech on a series of small cards will help make delivery sound natural and heartfelt. Speak slowly and look up as much as possible. Speeches should also be “visual” – use hands and facial expressions. Importantly, don’t worry if you overlook something. Just retrace your steps and make light of it. The main thing is to have fun – talking to a crowd is no more difficult than talking to a group of friends. Finally, speeches are far less formal and fewer in quantity than in the past. It is no longer necessary to reply to every speech and what once took two or three speeches can often be encompassed in one speech. Also, women no longer defer to the ‘male only’ tradition for speeches. Very often both bride and groom will address their family and friends and mothers of the bride are just as likely as their husbands to say a few words.

“Each day I love you more, today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow.” Being that it is your wedding day the speeches can be as many or as few as your prefer but those traditional thank-yous should not be dispensed with. Remember, everyone will all be in the mood to share in your joy and special thoughts so just relax and enjoy.

Dancing THE

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

NIGHT AWAY Idyllic wedding venue

THE WEDDING waltz is well and truly back, or, more accurately, the wedding dance and in this modern era it’s often a lot more active than a traditional waltz.

by the sea

Gracious colonial villa on beachfront reserve.

Your journey of romance starts here!

These days few young people learn ballroom dancing while at school and even fewer make the effort later. Yet, all of a sudden, couples in the mood to marry want to trip the light fantastic at the reception. Dance studios are reporting more couples asking for lessons so on their big day they can step confidently onto the dance floor. While many are happy to just master the waltz or a foxtrot others are more ambitious and want their own special dance. But that takes a little bit of time and, too often, dance lessons are left too late. Start learning your dance three to six months before the wedding. In this way you can choose between a group class and private lessons. By joining a class in the first instance, couples will get a feel for several dances ranging from ballroom to Latin American. From there they can determine which mode suits them best and they can go on to private lessons. On the other hand some couples will opt for private lesson first up and will take extra time to practise so they are in step when the music begins.

Elegant decor • Personal service What’s more, when that moment comes there is nothing more satisfying to have every eye in the room watching and every hand applauding the romance of the moment. Couples who have taken the time to make that first dance a success report a feeling of exhilaration and achievement. Remember too, that while early preparation for the wedding dance is advisable, it is also important to think about the type of music you want at your wedding. Whether you are seeking a string quartet or a DJ who will ensure you and your guests boogie away the evening, remember to book early.

Popular musicians are quickly snapped up and good DJs are in demand for many types of functions. Most musicians who play regularly at weddings know a suitable range of music from 1970 classic pop tunes and disco to more modern rhythm and blues and the latest chart favourites. Discuss with your chosen “music-makers” about special songs/music your want played and stipulate any “must nots”. Whatever you choose the outcome will be a harmonious evening to cap off a brilliant wedding day.

Pink Poppy Events

Well-Dressed “Henceforth there shall be such a oneness between you, that when one weeps, the other will taste salt.”

For special occasions

Pink

Poppy Events specialises in assisting you to “create the look you want” for your wedding or special occasion – school ball, corporate function, birthday celebration and more.

TABLES

We offer packages to create ‘your look’ with our chair covers, sashes, candelabras, centrepieces, linen, favours and more, all at a price to suit your budget.

BANQUETING, listening to speeches and watching the festivities – your wedding guests are bound to spend a lot of time seated. The way the tables are decorated will help set the mood, and encourage a convivial atmosphere.

Pink Poppy Events will make your special occasion memorable. Our services are flexible and we will help organise as much or as little as you require. We will tailor make your dream package.

Today’s modern bride is very organised when it comes dressing the tables and tying them to the theme of the wedding. Colour is usual central to the wedding theme with one particular shade often dominating the gowns, flowers, table settings and more. Linen-dressed reception tables are often adorned with shells (paua being especially popular) gemstones, rose petals, lavender, beads, fern leaves, ribbons and other decorative items as well as a floral display. The latter may be anything from a floating arrangement to candlelabra and flowers or just a single lily. Table napkins and chairs bows may also tie in with the colour scheme. Importantly, guests will often find that their place setting includes a wedding “favour” given as a special thank-you and a memory of this special day. The most popular wedding favours are chocolates, truffles and sweets often wrapped and tied with coloured foil and ribbons to match the theme. Some wedding favours are personalised with the names of the bride and groom or feature a romantic saying. While chocolates are by far the most

preferred favour, items such as fragrant soaps, scented candles, toiletries, sugared almonds and charms are also given.

about table settings and other equipment. They will also advise on table sizes and shapes, equipment quantities and themes.

But well dressed tables rely on far more than just a few trimmings. They take organisation and planning. Where couples have booked a reception lounge, linen, table settings, food and decorations are usually handled by venue staff although sometimes the bride will be required to add the finishing touches for her theme.

A good wedding hire facility will be able to do everything for you from elaborate decorations through to providing all culinary equipment and indoor/outdoor settings to suit the type of feast planned.

Where the couple has hired a marquee for a garden wedding or perhaps opted for a local hall or marae, the arrangements for table settings, food and decorations will be left entirely to them or family members. If a marquee, marae or hall reception is on your agenda, consult a party hire specialist

A party hire venue will offer tableware including cutlery, glassware, decorative china and silver coffee pots, elaborate bowls and cake stands – all the items needed to ensure the celebratory meal is displayed at its finest. No matter what your budget, there’s really no excuse for boring tables. Remember, the more flair and originality, the better the festivities!

Sweet touch

FLORAL

TO A SPECIAL DAY

THE WEDDING cake takes pride of place at a wedding reception – it is usually displayed on a separate table so guests can admire it as they make their way to be seated. The ceremonial cutting is a highlight of the celebration, a tradition that harks back to historical times when cake symbolised a fruitful union.

CASCADING roses or richly scented lillies – there’s nothing more romantic than the floral notes that are traditionally a part of every wedding day.

CAKE FROM THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

with flavoured madeira and sponges – orange and lemon for example – also vying for a place on the table.

♥ How many guests are you catering for?

♥ What sort of cake will suit the type and style of your wedding? ♥ Will you serve the cake as

dessert, with coffee or give pieces to guests to take home?

♥ Budget ♥ Transporting the cake to the venue.

♥ Will you keep the top tier until

your first wedding anniversary?

The classic wedding cake is generally three-tiered and embellished with white royal icing. But decoration can vary enormously as can the cake’s shape and the stacking of layers. While time-honoured fruit cake has been a favourite in the past, these days chocolate cake is a strong rival

These days guests are also likely to find carrot or banana cake under elaborate icing and it is this “anything goes” that has wide appeal. When it comes to decoration, remember icing or lashings of cream can be turned into cascades of blossoms, hearts and cherubs or lacy fine filigree work. Some people like to make and lash their own lavish affairs. Ffresh flowers can also achieve the wow factor but choose flowers that will last the distance. Another eyecatching option is good-quality silk flowers – not only can they look very realistic, they’ll last forever! When it comes to the grand cutting, a special cake knife should be on hand along with the photographer to snap that special moment!

IO KITCHEN

Stunning wedding cakes for the contemporary bride Your choice of flavour and decoration

The hardest part will be deciding which style is for you – a single bloom or a gardenia posy, trailing bouquet or a sheaf of sunflowers. When visiting your florist take along a picture of your dress and that of the bridesmaids. A swatch of fabric might help or even pictures clipped from magazines. FAUX FLOWERS FROM EVERLASTING DAISIES

A good florist will show you catalogues and photographs of arrangements they’ve made and will also offer suggestions for added requirements such as, corsages and buttonhole flowers. Many weddings have a colour theme, which may be picked up in the gowns, men’s ties, venue decorations and the flowers. But be realistic about your desired blooms. Check first if they will be in season otherwise you could pay a fortune. Also check if the flowers you most like are available in the colours you want.

Where bride’s once chose white or ivory flowers today the choices are unlimited. Sometimes the bride carries coloured flowers while the attendants carry white. Of course, colour choices may range from soft and romantic to bold or dramatic. Remember that the wedding venue – church, private home, beach – and the reception lounge may also require you to provide the flowers. Some venues include flowers in their costs but many don’t so talk to your florist about these extra arrangements.

Flowers for every occasion. Weddings a speciality.

Today’s bride has endless choices and a good florist will help making choosing easy.

MAKING

“Marriage is the mother of the world. It preserves kingdoms, and fills cities and churches, and heaven itself.”

Memories

MANY couples have looked back on their wedding day and confessed that some aspects were a bit of a blur. That’s why a visual record is so important.

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF JESSICA PHOTOGRAPHY

Naturally, first thoughts will turn to choosing a photographer and this should be done early in order to build a rapport with the all important person who will capture those special looks and images.

Brides, grooms lead out in style and wow your guests. We can choreograph and teach you your own unique wedding dance.

Specialist photographers/videographers have the equipment and expertise to capture the mood of any wedding either as a beautifully compiled photograph album, a video or a DVD. Start your search early and book well in advance – these specialists can be booked out 12 to 18 months ahead of time. Personal referrals from family and friends may be helpful, browse the internet and check out bridal magazines. Then make a shortlist of people who appeal to you. Visit them at their studios and see a portfolio of their work. Be up-front about your expectations, requirements and budget – a range of packages will generally be available. Clear communication will help avoid misunderstandings. Gauge personalities too and decide whether you’ll feel comfortable with them on the day. A good photographer will make you feel confident. He or she will keep people relaxed and happy during photo sessions.

Put love in your step! WEDDING DANCE PACKAGE • 1 hour introductory ONLY lesson • 4 x 1/2 hour lessons • unlimited free practice per couple at social classes

A few tips for great wedding photographs:

♥ Be clear about what you want but realistic in your expectations.

♥ Make a list of shots to be taken

during each phase of the wedding eg preparing at home, at the ceremony, bride and father arriving, group shots and photos of guests and family.

♥ Allow time for photos to be taken in the lead-up to the ceremony and after. ♥ Time the ceremony so there is enough

natural light for photography afterwards.

♥ Allow enough time between

the ceremony and reception for photography (1 to 2 hours).

♥ Don’t allow photographs to make you

late for the reception – often hot foods are timed for your arrival and being late will play havocs with schedules.

Start early and make your wedding day extra special

A DVD of the wedding is the perfect addition to photographs. It will capture those special moments and effectively re-tell the story of your big day. Today’s innovative DVD recordings may come documentary style to give a chronological record of the day’s proceedings or may be cinematic style, set to music and showing the artistic and emotional highlights of the day. Whatever you choose, a visual record of your wedding day will last long after it’s over – be sure you make the right choices.

Gifts

A WEDDING gift symbolises a guest’s pleasure in celebrating your marriage – and they want to make the right choice.

See our beautiful wedding gifts • Homewares • China • Bedlinen & much more... 125 Pakuranga Rd (next to Post Shop), outside WestÀeld Shopping Centre. Phone 576 7050 • www.lovecast.co.nz

Tradition has long dictated essential household items. But let’s face it, most couples – especially if they have been living together or are second time around – already have a toaster, kettle and closet full of linen. Luckily, most guests will ask you what you want, and one way to help them is to compile a gift list. Keep in mind, that while many will be grateful for suggestions, CRYSTAL FLUTES FROM SILKS others could view the list as JEWELLERS presumptuous and prefer to choose something for themselves. In such cases it might be more gracious to let your guest decide whether they would like to use your bridal register or not. When compiling a gift list the basic rules are:

♥

Include a wide variety of items and price ranges

♥

List more items than guests so that there’s not too much restriction on choice

♥

Place a few expensive items on the list as family or friends may wish to buy something as a group. Many stores have a formal bridal registry service. Because the registry will contain all the manufacturers details about an item on the list, there’s no guesswork, and it’s a convenient method of gift buying especially if guests are travelling from far away or are unable to attend.

An added incentive for a register is that the bride often receives a further voucher from the store, which amounts to a percentage of monies spent on gifts bought from the register. Which store you choose will depend on your personal needs and circumstances. You may need a whole range of homewares or you may prefer to outfit the garden with lawnmower, garden tools, barbecue or plants for landscaping. Interestingly, some couples invite donations to a travel fund to make their honeymoon dreams come true. If the idea appeals, discuss with your travel agent as to whether you wish the actual amounts to remain anonymous. This way

PEWTER WINE SET FROM RAPT, BOTANY TOWN CENTRE

you can thank your guests but not put pressure on them to donate any particular sum. The wishing well is another modern trend. Guests pop their monetary gift into the well at the reception. In this way all gifts can be pooled often allowing the bridal couple to later purchase a major item rather than receiving a mountain of smaller items of the type they already have. But remember, wedding gifts often result in lasting memories and sometimes become family heirlooms. So when guests wish to give spontaneously accept graciously. However, Most people will be happy to fit in with the bride and groom’s wishes. Last, but not least, thank-you letters are essential and should be sent out no later than six weeks after the wedding. Keep them short, but try to personalise at least one aspect of the note – your thoughtfulness will be appreciated and your special day, remembered for years to come.

“Couples have a choice of stunning locations and there’s no need to travel anywhere else for the honeymoon, she says. “However, it is important to consider a number of details such insurance, legal requirements, group discounts for guests and marriage fees. The first thing to decide on is destination – where to marry. “We invite couples to discuss with us destinations and resorts available for weddings. They may opt for a Pacific Island or may marry in New Zealand then celebrate the wedding abroad. Moira and Anne-Marie Butler manager of Harvey World Travel Botany agree that the most important issue is to plan and book early!

“Make bookings well in advance to secure your desired wedding date, the best venue and preferred ceremony time, says AnneMarie. “We can also check there’s enough availability of accommodation for guests to stay at the same resort and we can help organise group discounts for large wedding parties. These discounts will save money. Both consultants also urge couples to take out insurance especially for overseas weddings. They say the policy should cover cancellations, damaged wedding goods, attire and lost items. “And don’t forget to take marriage fees into account. These vary depending on the wedding destination and specific location. By ensuring all marriage fees are covered you’ll avoid any surprises. Of course many brides opt to marry near or at home then plan for an exotic overseas honeymoon. The good news is Harvey World Travel offers a Bridal Registry service, which allows family and friends to

make a confidential contribution of their choice towards your honeymoon. For many couples this is the ideal wedding gift solution especially where partners have been together for some time and have a well stocked home. “Let us take the stress out of planning your overseas wedding or honeymoon and let your guests contribute to a gift you will never forget, says Moira and AnneMarie.“With our help and proper planning, couples can avoid pitfalls and end up with the wedding and honeymoon of their dreams.
