Editor says...

It’s been a busy month, but SOUTH, along with the rest of Times Media’s magazine division, has settled into its new office at 151 King St, Pukekohe and we welcome callers.

With summer starting to tail off, I managed a few fun days on the Gold Coast (staying at Broadbeach) with wider family – grandsons included.

However, having done the theme parks many times with my own children when they were young, I can’t see me returning to this super-busy hub in the near future – do I need to scare myself silly on thrilling rides such as the Storm Rollercoaster and the Jet Rescue.

Maybe not! Nevertheless, there was plenty to keep us all amused even if I do need another holiday now!

On my return, I noted that Pokeno’s Hitchen’s Road bridge is now open to the public, providing connectivity for residents to the school and the central business district. That’s pleasing to see; Pokeno continues to expand so forethought being put into infrastructure and catering to local needs has to be appreciated.

It will be even more interesting to see how this once sleepy hollow develops in the coming years as residents look for more facilities.

ON THE COVER

PARTIAL TO PERSIMMONS: Persimmons are more than just a pretty face...and colour.

Nutrient-packed and known for their sweet, honey-like flavour, they can be used fresh or cooked for sweet or savoury. There are scores of persimmon varieties, but only two commercially viable types – Hachiya and Fuyu.

This month’s SOUTH looks at growing Fuyu persimmons and also provides a simple way to ‘conserve’ this versatile fruit. See stories, pages 17 and 37.

I’m glad to see there has been movement on the site of a new private hospital facility in Pukekohe. I have long believed this growing region is in dire need of a comprehensive hospital and this may be a solution although a public hospital will surely be needed in the near future as our district continues to expand – perhaps Drury might be considered ideal, saving local residents and often time-consuming journey to Middlemore Hospital.

Oh well, I guess we will wait and see what the future holds.

In the meantime, here’s hoping readers enjoy this month’s SOUTH magazine. We talk to drift racing’s Mike McCracken and admire the goodwill of a local photographer giving a boost to women suffering post natal depression. Of course, there’s plenty more to enjoy while sitting back and having a cuppa!

McCracken!

From drawing board to workshop to fitting tyres in the pits, Pukekohe’s Mike McCracken is living and breathing motorsport. Recently, JON RAWLINSON met up with this driven young man who’s devoted to fine-tuned machines which entertain most when travelling sideways... if you catch our ‘drift’.

Drift car drivers might be adrenalinfuelled but their vehicles aren’t. So, when the ballet-like manoeuvres these mad men (and women) in their fossil-fuelled driving machines go wrong, it can produce explosive results.

“Drift car racing is right up there with rallying on the danger scale,” driver and engineer, Mike McCracken confirms. “At competition level, it’s definitely more dangerous than circuit racing because you’re sideways at high speed trying to get as close to other cars as possible. The cars have massive fuel tanks so, if you hit the wall hard and they explode, a fire suit will last only so long.”

“When I left school and looking to earn some money to fund my passion for motorsport, I tried a couple of trades, including as a builder and an electrician. But I soon decided life was too valuable to spend doing anything other than what you love. By the time I went to work at Pukekohe’s E&H Motors, which is a well-known motorsport tuning shop, I also had some experience as a mechanic at Waiuku Automotive,” he says.

Fans who flocked to Pukekohe Park Raceway for the penultimate round of this year’s D1NZ Drifting Championship (March 30-31) will know just how perilous the sport can be.

“We saw a few crashes this year. At Pukekohe, drivers are doing upwards of 180-200km per hour sideways. If mistakes are made – when making splitsecond judgments – they can be a spectacular sight, to say the least,” says Mike.

One competitor to come a cropper at Pukekohe was up-and-coming Waiuku driver, Matthew Brown (a good mate of Mike’s). His teammate, Russell Vare (who, like Mike, is an experienced fabricator and engineer), came through the event unscathed.

“Matt’s fine too but the crash completely destroyed his car.

Whenever a car’s wrecked, it’s pretty sad. It’s not so much about the money its because we pour hours and hours into preparing them [our cars] for an event; we’re hard at work late every night getting them ready because motorsport does not sleep.”

roads, it’s all good knowing how to prevent things from going wrong, but knowing what to do when they do is much more beneficial.”

Experience is often the key to preventing drivers from making catastrophic mistakes, but work behind the scenes is crucial in protecting them if they do.

Since Mike discovered drift racing, the sport has become his passion and (eventually) his way to making a living.

“Safety is my first concern. All the cages we produce are made to the highest standards. At the end of the day, you can always replace a car; you can’t bring back a life.”

“I went to Pukekohe [Park] with my mates. Seeing a lot of young guys throw their low budget cars around the track at crazy speeds had me hooked,” the former Waiuku College student laughs.

While crashes may appear grand, (this Pukekohe local concedes he’s been involved in a few of his own on track) collisions on our roads can be far more deadly, a lesson Mike learnt from an early age.

While most motorsports favour a ‘first past the post’ system to sort champions from also-rans, drift racers need to do more than travel full speed ahead – or sideways – to claim accolades.

“I was in my early teens, coming second in my first ever KartSport series and on my way to the national finals but we turned around and came back when we heard my best friend’s brother had been killed in a car accident on the road,” he recalls.

“It can be [beneficial] to be first across the line but winning comes down to a lot of factors on the day, including the skills of the driver and the reliability of the car. In a battle scenario, for example, the car leading needs to follow the line the judges want, at the biggest angle, with the most amount of smoke and at the highest speed. You also need to be as close as possible to clipping points on corners,” Mike explains.

“When I have kids, I’ll want them to go into karts as soon as they’re old enough and I’ll build them cars for the rest of my life so they can drive incredibly fast around a motor circuit. If they can learn to handle a car on track, they’ll be much better drivers. On track or on the

Mike’s skills have also been beneficial in helping design a wide range of other vehicles, from Formula 5000 racing cars and endurance cars to some less ‘run of the mill’ machines.

“I’ve been involved in amazing projects. I did design and custom fabrication work on helicopters at [Ardmore Airport-based] Oceania Aviation, worked with Alan Gibbs building amphibious vehicles, and, about four years ago, for Reg Cooke on his streamliner for Bonneville Speed Week – it now holds about 16 land speed world records; being part of that was incredible.”

Producing drift cars (through his business, Drift Systems) is right up Mike’s street these days. However, he could well be back behind the wheel and competing soon enough.

“I started out as a driver, before learning to build the cars, so my place is on track, it’s where I feel most comfortable and I’ve driven all over New Zealand. I haven’t driven in the D1NZ Series yet, but I’m hopeful I can be involved next year.”

MONEY MAKES THE WHEELS GO ‘ROUND Supporting a sport can involve cheering in the stands or from the comfort of one’s couch. However, drift car designer/builder, Michael McCracken, takes a more hands-on approach, as his involvement with March’s Drift Matsuri in Taupo shows.

“We took all our gear – including tyre machines, generators and compressors – and changed www.southmagazine.co.nz

tyres all weekend. As we’re not specialist tyre-fitters, changing 200-300 tyres in one weekend was hard work!”

From Pukekohe’s Carl Ruiterman (Mike’s former boss from E&H Motors and a three-time national champ) to Michael ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett, New Zealand is wellknown for its top drift drivers on the world stage.

“This country has produced an incredible standard of driver; we have some of the best by far,” Mike says. “But it can cost upwards of $100,000 for a pro’ car in running costs alone and sponsorship is hard to secure in any motorsport.

If we want Kiwis to continue to do well, we need more businesses to get in behind it.”

can’t provide much in the way of sponsorship – yet – but his team is one of many prepared to pitch in.

“Ours is a young business so we don’t have money to burn.

However, we do help wherever and however we can, if only to make sure the wheels of the sport keep turning.”

shining light in dark place Motherhood is meant to be the happiest time of a woman’s life but for those with postnatal depression it can be a frightening and debilitating experience. Casey Littler is hoping her photography campaign will help remove the stigma attached to the condition and will reach out to sufferers across the country. She talked to ANGELA KEMP. It has to be said that social media has a lot to blame for the idealistic portrayal of childbirth and new motherhood. Nobody posts about how their baby never sleeps and is always crying or how they feel their world has fallen apart and nothing makes sense.

For some women, postnatal depression (PND) and anxiety can even start during pregnancy. It affects about 10-20 percent of new mothers and can happen at any time during the first year.

Casey Littler is a talented portrait photographer based in Clarks Beach where she has a studio at the home she shares with her husband and two young children.

She’s worked as a photographer since completing a BA in visual arts at the University of Auckland 11 years ago.

Although she hasn’t suffered from PND herself, Casey felt compelled to help sufferers after a client told her about her own personal battles.

“Chantelle is an ambassador for the PND charity, Mother’s Helpers, and she asked me if I would do a campaign for women with postnatal depression.

“It’s quite a raw thing and a lot of women don’t admit to it because they are ashamed and embarrassed. This whole campaign was designed to let women know they aren’t on their own, that there are other women out there going through it and to just talk about it.”

Where to get help If you, or somebody you know, is struggling after giving birth there are people you can turn to for help.

The charity put eight women in touch with Casey who donated a photo shoot, including hair and makeup, to the brave participants.

“It’s amazing what they have done, they’ve shown so much courage,” she says. “Every photographer has their own forte and mine is photographing women. I know how to direct them, make them feel comfortable and relaxed and to just let them shine.

To be able to capture a woman in this way is something special.

“I do everything from new born through to glamour photography, family groups and children. But my main thing is I want women to exist in photos. I don’t think enough women actually go and have their portraits taken. We’re either doing something for our children or we don’t feel as if we are beautiful enough or at the right stage in our life. Before we know it, we have no portrait.

“Since becoming a mother I’ve set out to try to rectify that especially

after seeing how few photos I appear in. On the other hand, I take pictures of my children and my husband all the time. That’s how it is for most women.”

At a fundraising gala evening for Mother’s Helper held at Maxwells Eat. Play. Stay. in Bombay, the participants met each other for the first time when their stunning portraits were revealed.

Casey also put together a video of interviews she made with the women in which they shared their stories and gave advice to other mothers. She’s hoping it goes viral.

Casey is planning to carry out a similar campaign next year but is currently concentrating on a project for breast cancer.

“I’ve had a lot of clients come to me to have photo shoots before they have a mastectomy. Some also come afterwards to have family portraits because they know how precious life is.”

Mothers Helper provides support to mothers experiencing ante-natal and postnatal anxiety and depression. It offers PND recovery courses and follow-up face-to-face counselling as well as online.

and preparing for exams. We run camps to help grow supportive social networks and we ensure our students have access to me, their dean, or the school counsellor when necessary,” he explains.

Students are expected to manage their workload without constant reminders from a single homeroom teacher; they must juggle timetables and textbooks and take responsibility for the standard of their work.

Year 7 students at the school also receive specialist subject teaching, moving to different classrooms for lessons in English, mathematics, science, social science, art, design & technology, music, drama, physical education, Spanish, Chinese and ICT.

They’re adjusting to becoming the small fish in a big pond, surrounded by seniors in a new school environment. At the same time, cornerstone concepts are being taught which will form the foundation of their college education.

This according to ACG Strathallan Year 7 and 8 dean, Clinton Thomas, an educator with 15 years’ teaching experience and five years as a dean at the independent school in Karaka.

“Students need to be treated differently at intermediate age,” he says. “They must be nurtured as they’re still young yet challenged academically to avoid losing interest.”

Providing the right support through the change and development is key, Mr Thomas says.

This, he says, has enormous academic benefit.

“Specialist teachers have the experience, knowledge and ability to draw out the best in their students. They can extend the advanced students and help lower ability students with many different approaches. Their subject knowledge is at the highest level.”

He says, most importantly, specialist teachers have the passion, excitement and motivation to teach their subject well.

“Students feed off this vibe. They see their teacher’s love for the subject, and it motivates them to excel,” Mr Thomas explains.

Strong support and tailored specialist teaching sees students through what may otherwise be a tumultuous year.

“Once these are in place, students have the foundation for a fantastic all-round education.”

Mornington A decade has passed since HELEN PERRY first visited Melbourne and explored wineries of the Mornington Peninsula with entrepreneurial Wine Tours Victoria.

Since then she has toured with the boutique company to other grape-growing regions – the Yarra Valley, Macedon Ranges and Bellarine Peninsula – but recently she revisited Mornington to take in new tasting experiences.

Martin Luther once said, “beer is made by man, wine by god”. Well, I respectfully beg to differ although had he said, ‘wine is made by the gods’ I might have agreed. That’s because there are some veritable ‘wine gods’ among the vintners of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Indeed, it seemed fitting to return to the area 10 years after my first inspirational visit there with Wine Tours Victoria when I was introduced to acclaimed wineries such as Montalto, Tucks Ridge and Stonier.

This time, I was one of four guests, the others, two globetrotters from Germany and my sisterin-law. Although I’d never been disappointed by any of the company’s tour drivers (all wonderfully informed and most genial) I was delighted that this time our driver was company owner, Trevor Armstrong.

Having communicated by email over the years this was the first time we had met; both his good humour and his educated insights were really appreciated. It was clearly evident that both ardent wine connoisseurs and amateurs (such as myself) could benefit from his knowledge and understanding of the local wine industry and its vintages.

Leaving our city hotel it might have been quicker to take the Nepean Highway all the way from central Melbourne but not nearly as interesting.

Instead, Trevor opted for a scenic meander down Beach Road, which

hugs the coast, passing through many picturesque suburbs before veering inland where our route climbed to historic Arthur’s Seat, the perfect stop for morning tea, picnic style.

Located on the peninsula’s highest viewpoint with a panoramic outlook from Murray’s Lookout over Port Philip Bay, it was a lovely entry to the district.

Named by Acting Lieutenant John Murray in January 1802 because it resembled Arthur’s Seat Hill in Edinburgh, England, it was a particularly scenic spot and we were sorry there was no time to explore further.

However, after that welcome cuppa it was upwards and onwards whereby we noted the addition of the new Arthur’s Seat Eagle, a scenic gondola which takes visitors to the highest point for what I guess were even more beautiful views – something to do next time.

Late morning we made our first stop at Red Hill Estate renowned for many award-winning wines.

We tasted several wines but the biggest surprise for me was the Prosecco Reserve – a sparkling white.

Now, I’m not usually a ‘bubbles’ person – the best French champagne is wasted on me – but I really did take to this delicious light sparkling wine made from the Italian grape, Glera. Its hint of pear, apple, citrus, and pistachio really appealed so I bought a bottle and it presently resides in my fridge waiting for son’s birthday in June.

From there, we made our way to my favourite on this visit, Pier 10 – charming, rustic with a cellar door and two restaurant options – loved the cosy ambience and open fireplaces in the Cellar Bar (part of the original homestead), while the main restaurant opened to the outdoors and enjoyed extensive views – both very appealing.

I came away with a bottle of 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon and a determination to re-visit this picturesque winery where cellar door manager, Craig Keygan, was so agreeable.

vineyard concern. Here the provincial décor, rural mood and store (with a host of desirable goodies), was also inviting.

And, yes, I couldn’t resist taking back blue cheese, crackers, dukkah, relishes, and a few other bits and pieces to have in the hotel later that evening, accompanied, of course, by another red, this time a bottle of the winery’s 2016 Baillieu Shiraz. Its spicy plum and blackcurrant aromas were a whiff of good things to come – later, it went down well with our makeshift ploughman’s platter! After that generous lunch – fish of the day for me (whiting) with saffron kipfler potato, zucchini and rouille – dinner was out of the question but not a ‘little’ snack-time!

After this most pleasant sojourn we set out for our fourth and final call, the absolutely stunning Port Phillip Estate, an architectural landmark with massive, limestone rammed earth walls, first viewed as a sweeping curve and concealing a dramatic staircase which descended to the lower regions of the complex (pictured right).

With its contemporary design, expansive deck and panoramic views; it was the antithesis of other venues we visited and one I recommend not only to wine lovers but to architectural students who will surely be impressed with the vision and philosophy behind this highly individual venue. I should also add that it offers a wonderful dining facility and I believe there is accommodation available too.

Being our last stop I simply had to buy another bottle of wine; this time the 2016 Port Phillip Haven Shiraz – most agreeable.

However, as mentioned, not all made it home; we drank this one during our stay in order to carry less on the plane although, usually, I try to keep my wine purchases for at least two years so they can mature.

Of course, in another two years I’ll be heading back to Melbourne and its glorious wine-growing regions. Can’t wait see what new developments will have emerged and, naturally, I’ll be booking Wine Tours Victoria for the trip.

A taste for conserves Comfortable accommodation with good facilities is considered a ‘must’ by HELEN PERRY when travelling. Staying at the newly opened Novotel and Ibis Central during her recent Melbourne visit she enjoyed the amenities immensely especially the great restaurant and bar.

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar • 1 onion, chopped • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and chopped • 3/4 cup white sugar • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 red chilli, seeded and sliced • 1 tbsp minced fresh ginger root • 1 tbsp lemon zest • 1 tsp ground coriander seed

• 1/8 tsp ground cloves • 4 Fuyu persimmons, peeled and chopped

METHOD In a large saucepan combine the apple cider vinegar, chopped onion, chopped apple, sugar, lemon juice, chili, ginger, lemon peel, coriander and cloves Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until mixture thickens, stirring frequently, about 25 minutes Add the persimmons and simmer until the persimmons are tender, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Historic

township charms There’s a first time for everything but after her initial visit to historic Williamstown, down river from central Melbourne, HELEN PERRY says it won’t be the last and that’s because she saw only a smidgeon of the district.

Historic places have always appealed but somehow a long time plan to explore the early settlement of Williamstown, never seemed to eventuate – until this year, that is.

A cloudless day with the temperature set to hit around 34 degrees C seemed perfect for taking the meandering ferry journey from Southbank to Gem Pier at Hobson Bay then just a walk across beautiful Commonwealth Reserve to Nelson Place with is 150-year-old buildings.

It is from the reserve that visitors can set out on a one of three mapped heritage walks. On this occasion my companion and I just took the time to wander a good portion of the waterfront walk checking out the age of buildings and the fact that most were now

cafes and restaurants – one after the other!

The other two walks took in the seaside and the community but while not impossible to do all three in a day – the longest was between three and four kilometres; the shortest just over a kilometre – on this occasion it was much too hot.

Colonial settlers first thought the site would be suitable for government facilities but a lack of adequate fresh water in the area soon saw then eyeing Melbourne instead. Subsequently, Williamstown became largely forgotten and as a result its lovely old buildings survived the ‘new’ city’s cultural expansion.

While we stuck to the waterfront area, inspecting a goodly number of charming buildings, we were soon attracted to Tick Tock café for lunch – one of several reasonably priced venues which beckoned.

A light calamari salad, two glasses of sav’ blanc and we were most content to sit outside under the umbrellas, pleased we didn’t have to drive anywhere.

Founded in 1836 by John Bateman, and named for King William IV, Williamstown was built on the lands of the Kulin people, in particular the

The Williamstown Dockyard still plays a naval role. A ship-building site since 1913, it was modernised in the 70s and 80s by the Australian Department of Defence to build frigates and destroyers and is still a vital construction centre for Australia’s naval defences.

I was especially interested to see the HMAS Castlemaine moored at the pier where our ferry pulled up. An early 1930’s corvette/ minesweeper which served during the Second World War, it has been restored as a floating museum and naval memorial. Unfortunately, being open only at weekends meant we were unable to board. A future visit, perhaps?

While this ‘veteran’ was off limits, Pelican’s Landing, the fabulous waterfront bar and restaurant fronting the Quest Apartments, overlooking the marina, was certainly not.

With a cocktail list that puts tots of rum to shame, it was almost enough to make me abandon ship, or should I say, ferry, and stay on for dinner. Unfortunately, another booking called so Williamstown, Pelican’s Landing and watching the boats go by, will have to wait for another time. www.southmagazine.co.nz

MELBOURNE TRAVEL

Delicious to a tea!

Luxurious high teas, which originated in the early part of the 19th century, have again become fashionable none more so than that served at The Hotel Windsor in Melbourne where HELEN PERRY recently enjoyed its much lauded and sumptuous fare.

Hansel and Gretel’s encounter with a mouth-watering gingerbread house had nothing on my high tea experience at Melbourne’s Hotel Windsor – the abandoned children may have succumbed to a few appetising pieces of biscuit but I was faced with a myriad of delectable and colourful choices all just begging to be tasted.

Resistance was impossible. Not that I wanted to resist. I’d tried several times in the past to book a table but had always left it too late.

This time I booked several weeks in advance from New Zealand, opting for the 3pm sitting on a Sunday afternoon.

At $99 per head (inclusive of a glass of French sparkling wine and the indulgent dessert buffet) it was slightly dearer than the Monday to Friday tea at $75 per head which does not include the buffet selection.

On arrival we made our way to the opulent One Eleven Lounge to be swiftly seated and treated to impeccable service from go to whoa. Bubbles first then our tea orders taken, the latter no mean feat. Eleven different varieties presented a bit of a dilemma but finally we opted for The Windsor’s afternoon blend – delicious. And, www.southmagazine.co.nz

there was no faulting the elegant tea service with a tea pot which poured perfectly!

Next to arrive was a gleaming three tiered silver stand bearing ribbon sandwiches, savouries, French patisserie and fresh baked scones with Windsor jam and whipped cream.

By time we had worked our way through some 10 pieces each, including a refreshing chilled lychee, avocado and coconut soup (served in a shot glass), accompanied by a dainty portion of parmesan sable with salmon roe I did wonder if I could manage the dessert table. But, of course, I did.

I cannot adequately describe the buffet. So many temptations! Not one or two, not half a dozen, not even 10 or 12. At least a score…or more!

By time we were ready to depart there was no room for the last mouthful of longchamp gateau (chocolate mousse, vanilla cremeux and hazelnut). I was replete. And, while we would have walked back to our hotel, somehow a taxi seemed in order, followed by a nap!

If I should mention one (and I chose four items from the table) it would have to be the raspberry and tonka entremet filled with raspberry confit, guanaja (Valrhona’s legendary chocolate) and tonka bean cremeux plus vanilla ganache.

A BIRD IN THE HOME WORTH TWO IN BUSH? There’s plenty to be said for having a cat or a dog as a pet but in many households this may be impractical so, what to do?

Well, if you want a pet which will fill your house with song, or one that can be taught to speak, get a bird. Many can be trained to sit on a shoulder or can be left to fly freely inside the home, returning to the cage on command.

You might even consider an aviary if you have room in the yard and want to give your birds or birds more freedom of movement.

Here are five types of smaller birds which might make a great addition to your home.

• CANARIES: This type is best for people who want to watch and listen to their bird, but don’t want to handle it. Male canaries can mimic sounds it hears in your home and transform them into birdsong. Yorkshire canaries are known for their beautiful singing.

• LOVEBIRDS: You have a better chance of bonding with a single lovebird than a pair. They need lots of social interaction, so be ready to spend time training and playing with them.

• BUDGIES: These small parrots are friendly, easy to take care of and some can be trained to speak better than larger parrots.

They come in a variety of colours and can prove very affectionate.

• AFRICAN GREY PARROTS: This is a bird you may like if you really want one you can teach to talk. Some have vocabularies of hundreds of words. However, if an African grey becomes bored or neglected, they will voice their displeasure loudly.

• COCKATIELS: This medium sized parrot is very intelligent and when hand-raised, they are affectionate pets. They don’t usually learn to talk but they can mimic household sounds such as doorbells and ringing phones.

No matter what type of bird you get – and there are many different varieties available – make sure you give it a cage big enough with plenty of perches and toys. Lots of love and attention are also requisite.

Also, ensure your home is safe for a bird. Their respiratory systems are much more delicate than ours, and they can’t handle things such as cigarette smoke, the fumes that come from non-stick cookware or scented candles, and air fresheners.

Lastly, research the care of your chosen birds, check if they are better to have a companion and remember most birds cages should be covered at night, preferably around nightfall. They need to follow proper sleep patterns (just as they do in the wild), so don’t keep your bird up all night, or covered during the day. Book a regular vet check too.

Winter tips With the colder weather coming, you may be changing to a winter duvet and flannel sheets but are you changing anything for your pets? Dr Nikki Frost, senior vet at Franklin Vets Pukekohe shares some tips for winter.

Dogs and cats which spend a lot of time outside need shelter to protect them from the wind, rain and frosts.

There are a lot of commercial kennels available which are suitable. Choose a place elevated and protected from the elements as much as possible and fill with dry blankets.

Any beds should be elevated off the cold damp ground and away from drafts. Heating discs or pads can be added to the bed to make it extra snugly, but hot water bottles are not recommended in case of leaking hot water especially if they are chewed on.

In winter, arthritis symptoms tend to worsen, just like in humans. This may present in dogs as limping or stiffness with walking or struggling to get up and down.

Cats may not jump up as much to higher places, groom less and sleep more. Visit your vet if you have concerns about possible arthritis in your pet to discuss options for treatment.

Even though the temptation to stay inside snuggled under the blankets is high, animals still require exercise during winter to maintain a healthy weight and to decrease boredom.

If going for a walk is not an option then playing with toys inside will help keep them fit and healthy.

And, lastly, be careful of pets around heaters and fires. They will be attracted to the warmth just like we are but also have the potential to burn themselves so ensuring they can’t get too close is essential.

Founder, Penny Harwood and her team can look back with satisfaction on the hard work put into establishing a company of trustworthy, honest jewellers who pride themselves on customer service and quality craftsmanship.

“I couldn’t have progressed so far without the love and support of my family and friends, my fabulous team and our wonderful customers,” says Penny who clearly recalls her career shift from winemaking to jewellery-making.

“I was studying winemaking in Marlborough and working for Daniel Le Brun Wines. Over a tasting of the latest vintage bubbly I had a serendipitous meeting with a local goldsmith; my interest in the trade was instantly piqued.”

Subsequently, Penny took up an invitation to visit his jewellery workshop where “a new creative path became very clear to me.”

As a result, she moved to Auckland to study at the Peter Minturn Goldsmith School in Mt Eden. After graduating as a qualified goldsmith (or bench jeweller) 13 years ago she came to Pukekohe to work for Paul Brighouse at Brighouse Design. “I bought the business 5 years ago and I’ve not looked back.”

Since then Penny and her dedicated team, including manager and talented goldsmith, Tineke Jansen, (integral to the company for the past three years), have become known for their skill, vision, precision workmanship and innovative designs.

Earlier this year, Ryo Takano, a graduate of the Peter Minturn Goldsmith School, joined the team. He comes from a mix of creative fields – hair dressing, make-up artistry and sculpture – and brings a fresh approach to complement Tineke’s extensive experience, which started when she completed a degree in contemporary jewellery and design at Hungry Creek in 2012. She then did a BDVA in photography at Unitec in 2015.

Together this team abounds in inventiveness, their specialties including stunning one-off, hand-made pieces, restoration, remodelling, CAD design, and an expert repair service – “we can never get enough of working with gold, silver and beautiful stones – the work is challenging; the outcomes, immensely satisfying.”

All work is carried out on-site, and Harwood’s vault is impenetrable so precious family heirlooms are always safe and sound.

“Unlike most retail jewellery stores, we are all manufacturing goldsmiths. This means clients can feel confident their precious family heirlooms are handled with the greatest of care, and are always secure,” Penny says.

“What’s more, nothing is lost in translation.

On arrival, clients talk directly to the craftsperson who will provide the required jewellery service. This helps foster trust and understanding of client needs.”

If asked to create a piece ‘from scratch’, Harwood’s can source any gems or metal required however, these jewellers will also spend time taking worn and broken, yet still beautiful, items, repurposing all of the metal and gemstones to create a brand ‘new’ piece made exclusively for the client.

“We also ensure that such lovingly created pieces are never repeated so they remain the only one of their kind,” Penny says.

Of course, services don’t stop at handmaking new pieces. Ring sizing is done within three days (or faster if needed), all manner of repairs and restorations are happily undertaken and insurance replacement quotes provided with subsequent remakes being common.

With the first five years behind her, Penny and her team are excited about the future.

They extend a warm welcome to visit their busy workshop (next to the ANZ bank in Edinburgh Street, Pukekohe), and watch them at work.

WITCHERY SPELL END TO OVARIAN CANCER Chances of surviving late diagnosis ovarian cancer beyond five years are pretty slim so, with Witchery having kicked off its 11th annual White Shirt campaign to assist ovarian cancer research, women have a chance to play a major part in battling this life-threatening disease.

CEO of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF), Lucinda Nolan says one Kiwi woman dies every 48 hours from ovarian cancer.

“With no early detection test available, ovarian cancer has a significantly lower survival rate than breast and cervical cancer,” Ms Nolan says. “Early stages of ovarian cancer have no obvious symptoms, resulting in most women being diagnosed in the advanced stages of the disease.”

She says research is endeavouring to develop an early detection test for ovarian cancer which will be as readily available and as accessible as a pap smear (for cervical cancer) or mammogram (for breast cancer).

“Over 50% of the community incorrectly believes that a pap smear diagnoses ovarian cancer.

Developing an early detection test will allow for early diagnosis, early treatment, and can ultimately help save lives.”

So, for every white shirt sold, Witchery will donate 100% of gross proceeds to the OCRF. To date, the White Shirt campaign has raised more than $12.1 million but there is still work to be done so here’s your chance to help.

BLUEBERRY KEFIR OVERNIGHT

oats The Turks have a word for feeling good: kefir. So it’s not surprising that The Collective’s Blueberry Kefir (available at supermarkets, RRP $5.90) features probiotics, natural calcium and protein, as well as delivering a creamy, sumptuous flavour. And, although it is delectable on its own, there are many ways to enjoy this treat.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup of The Collective Blueberry Kefir • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen • 1 cup rolled oats • 1 tbsp black chia seeds • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp raw coconut sugar • 1 tbsp sliced almonds • 1/4 coconut flakes

• 1 pinch of salt Toppings • 10 blueberries, fresh or frozen • 1 tbsp coconut flakes • 1 tbsp sliced almonds

METHOD

Add the blueberries to boiling water for 60 seconds. Drain water carefully, then use a fork to gently mash the blueberries.

Add all dry ingredients to a

mixing bowl and mix evenly.

Add kefir, almond milk and blueberries. Use a wooden spoon to gently fold the ingredients together.

Pour mix evenly into two glass jars. Seal and put in the fridge overnight (8 hours).

To serve, top with fresh blueberries, coconut flakes and sliced almonds.

Veggie Bowl Finding balance when it comes to food can be hard and a good diet is one that incorporates all food groups without discounting the food you enjoy.

Eating low-GI foods cause a steady rise in the level of glucose in the blood, which in turn leads to a smaller and gentler rise in insulin.

When insulin slowly increases it keeps you feeling full and energised for hours after eating and can help your body burn fat more efficiently.

SunRice Ambassadors Julia and Libby have created this simple Brown Rice and Vege Bowl which is low-GI but rich in nutrients, protein and flavour.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Total time: 30 minutes Serves: 2

Ingredients: • 1 cup SunRice Low GI Brown Rice • 1 avocado • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved • 1/2 capsicum, finely sliced • 1/3 cucumber, chopped • 1/4 cup red onion, finely sliced • 2 Tbsp Greek yogurt

Dressing: • 3 Tbsp olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar • Salt and pepper

In a small bowl, mix the dressing ingredients and place aside.

Once the rice is cooked, spoon into 2 serving bowls. Arrange the vegetables in the 2 bowls and place a tablespoon of Greek yogurt into the middle of each bowl.

Method: Place rice and two cups of water into a medium sized saucepan, bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook until all the water is absorbed (about 15-minutes) and then stand for 5-minutes.

Add your favourite protein such as tuna, chicken, tofu or egg if you wish. Drizzle the dressing over the vegetables and protein. Best served warm.

The Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (the Act) defines a de facto relationship as a relationship between two people (irrespective of gender) who are both 18 years or older, who live together as a couple, and who are not married or in a civil union with each other.

It is in the “living together as a couple” aspect of the definition where the waters can become murky as, while sharing a home together can be an important indicator of a de facto relationship, it is not essential.

In deciding whether two people are living together as a couple, the Court will consider a number of factors, including: • The duration of the relationship • The nature and extent of the parties’ living arrangements • Whether or not a sexual relationship exists • The degree of financial dependence on each other for money, and whether one party supports the other • The ownership, use, and purchase of property • The degree of mutual commitment to a shared life • The care and support of children • The performance of household duties • Whether they are viewed as a couple publicly.

The Court has the discretion to take any and all of the above factors into consideration to determine whether two people were living together as a couple but none of

the factors are compulsory.

Therefore, it can be found that two people were living together as a couple even if they did not live under the same roof. This means it can sometimes be difficult to know when property consequences can start flowing from a relationship.

Once a couple has been in a de facto couple relationship for three years, the provisions of the Act will apply to determine the division of assets and liabilities when that relationship ends (through separation or death).

Generally speaking, the presumption under the Act is that all relationship property will be divided equally between the couple. This means that the value of property put towards or acquired during the relationship, such as the family home, household chattels, vehicles, income and KiwiSaver, will be shared equally between the couple when the relationship ends. This can come as a shock to someone who believed that they were not (for varying reasons) in a de facto relationship.

If you have concerns about the classification of your relationship, we recommend seeking legal advice early to ensure your property is dealt with in the manner suited to you if your relationship ends.

This can be achieved by entering into an agreement, which must comply with the requirements of the Act to be effective, with your partner to contract out of the presumption of equal sharing under the Act and determine how a division of assets would occur.

No, the Fuyu is not a figment of sci-fi imagination, nor is it a type of daybed or futon and it’s certainly not a new breed of canine.

In fact, the Fuyu is a sweet, non-astringent persimmon cultivated for more than a millennium in Asian countries and prized in many parts of the world.

Well, winter is certainly on the way. In our house we are already starting practice for winter sports.

It has seemed much too warm for that.

We recently exhibited at the Home and Lifestyle Expo in Pukekohe and had a comment from one visitor which we hear all too often in the renovation business…

“But I can do it cheaper myself!”

This comment has prompted some serious office discussions and has had us all thinking – what is our time worth? What is the opportunity cost of doing the job ourselves and what price do we put on our time?

We Kiwis come from a long line of proud DIYers and it’s often hard for us to take a step back and let someone else do it for us.

While the relative dollar figure can be cheaper when you DIY what we all fail to take into account is the time spent on the job. You’re the project manager and the rookie builder, you deal with the subbies and all the issues that arise with renos and that’s on top of your fulltime paid job!

Everybody understands, life gets in the way; you have work, you have a family. So, the question we put to you is this: if you put a value on the hours you worked to get the job done, would you be saving?

Persimmons (Diospyrus kaki, which loosely translates to ‘Fruit of the Gods’) are deciduous fruit trees with striking autumn foliage. The delicious and very decorative orange red fruit are harvested during autumn.

persimmons also pair well with soft, fresh cheeses such as mozzarella and mascarpone as well as, cranberries, pomegranates, pistachios, bacon, prosciutto, figs, mild lettuces and bitter greens.

Persimmons fall into two groups – astringent and nonastringent. The latter, including Fuyu (among others) can be eaten while still crisp and firm whereas heart-shaped astringent persimmons, such as Hira Tanenashi, need to be fully ripened and very soft or jelly-like. This helps reduce the tannin levels, which create a bitter taste.

Keep at room temperature or in the refrigerator but don’t store near apples or other ethyleneproducing fruits as they will ripen and spoil quickly.
